OSCEOLA COUNTY
– Three Osceola High School students were injured during what appears to be a shootout at a resort in Davenport
according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office
The shooting happened early Sunday at Azur Resort on Famagusta Drive in Davenport
which the sheriff’s office said has some short-term rentals
there were over 100 people and several vehicles at the scene when a fight broke out
A witness told deputies that a “group of males” were fighting when they began shooting at each other
Deputies said three people — a 17-year-old girl
a 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man — were injured “due to being in the crossfire” while they were in a parked vehicle
The three said they heard an argument before the gunfire
The 18-year-old suffered a graze wound to the forehead but was treated and released from the hospital
The 17-year-old girl had graze wounds to the shoulder and forehead
They remained in the hospital as of Sunday
The sheriff’s office said all three were from Osceola High School
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said the victims were not “troublemakers,” he said they were just where they shouldn’t have been after midnight
The sheriff’s office said they are looking at videos to try and find the gunmen
but they are having trouble getting anyone to speak
Judd said they believe there were at least three shooters
given the number of shells and bullet holes
The second question I have is why is it that there’s over 100 people here and nobody knows anything?”

I want to assure you that we will have additional counseling personnel on campus tomorrow to support any student who needs to talk with someone
We have very limited details and can not release any information at this time

Any student who would like to talk to someone on the counseling team tomorrow morning is encouraged to let an administrator know as they arrive on campus
in the morning a student would like to talk to someone
they should tell their teacher and make their way to the media center
We are mindful that tomorrow begins both state and Advanced Placement testing
so please reach out to administration if your student has been affected by the events that took place so we can seek to make arrangements to ensure they are also supported academically by our team
I want our students to know that they are not alone—our Kowboy family stands united in compassion and strength
Kennedy said counselors will be available on the school’s campus on Monday for any student who needs to speak with someone
I need you to lean in on your high school kids that were there and say
what’s to stop that bullet from killing someone next Saturday night or next Friday night?” Judd said
Judd said they are still working to nail down whether there was a party happening at a short-term rental in the complex and if the shooters were attending the party
Judd said his office has also asked Airbnb and VRBO not to rent to kids
“And then the kids invite their friends and their friends invite the friends
and the next thing you know is you have people show up with guns and start shooting each other
The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information to contact its office at 863-298-6200 or to submit anonymous tips at 1-888-400-8477

As we approach the second anniversary of a tragedy that shocked the people of Davenport
and brought national attention to the issue of building safety
government secrecy continues to cloud public understanding of just what happened and whom to hold accountable
The tragedy occurred a few minutes before 5 p.m
when the back wall of a Davenport apartment building gave way
bringing down much of the six-story residence that occupied a quarter block across the street from City Hall
Rescuers amputated the leg of a fourth victim to free her from the rubble
Before the dust from bricks and other building materials settled
the community asked how and why the collapse occurred
and how the city could avoid similar tragedies in the future
But questions still linger — largely because local officials continue to use their power and pay attorneys to keep many pertinent documents secreted from journalists and concerned residents
The Iowa Legislature intended just the opposite when it wrote the state’s public records law 50 years ago
The latest skirmish in this drawn-out fight over access to records and information comes courtesy of Scott County Attorney Kelly Cunningham
She asked the Iowa Public Information Board last month to ratify her belief that she can keep the report from an independent investigation of the collapse secret
Her request for a “declaratory order” from the IPIB likely will hit the board’s May 15 agenda
when the staff is expected to recommend whether an Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation report qualifies for a disclosure exemption under the public records act
this much should be crystal clear to the county attorney
the Iowa Public Information Board and Davenport city officials:
The people of Davenport hunger for facts about the tragedy
They want to know what problems with the building’s structural integrity were reported by tenants before the building fell
They want the facts about the owner’s maintenance of the residence
They want to know the facts about what building code enforcement officials at City Hall did — and did not do — in response to tenant and neighbor complaints before the collapse
Keeping the DCI report secret further dashes the already damaged public trust and confidence in how local elected officials acted before and after the collapse
Public distrust has intensified since Cunningham decided not to file criminal charges and
asked the IPIB for help to keep the DCI report confidential
believes nothing in the public records law prevents Cunningham from releasing the full DCI report
scrubbed only of birth dates and other private personal information about tenants or the names of any confidential sources
Although Cunningham cites Iowa court decisions to justify her request to keep the DCI report secret
the public records law expressly says confidential documents CAN be made public by the lawful custodian of a record
so the choice is hers if she has the courage to make it
“The concern of the Scott County Attorney is the safety of the public and individuals who in some way were involved with the City of Davenport and/or were perceived to have had something to do with the building collapse
The public involvement and outrage surrounding the May 28
the building owner when the collapse occurred
and his building manager have received threats to their safety and protests at their homes
What Cunningham ignores is that the immense public interest in the DCI report comes from people who want to know precisely
what state agents found so the public can hold city leaders accountable for preventing a repeat of the tragedy
provided a very cogent explanation of the role the public records law has in matters like this: “The purpose of [the public records law] is to open the doors of government to public scrutiny [and] to prevent government from secreting its decision-making activities from the public
The United States Supreme Court had similar guidance in a 1980 case when the court said: “People in an open society do not demand infallibility from their institutions
but it is difficult for them to accept what they are prohibited from observing.”
The Quad-City Times summed this up nicely in a recent editorial: “How can we learn without all the facts
The facts don’t belong to public officials
Public information can be inconvenient and uncomfortable
but it is vital for a citizen-powered government.”
But why the Scott County attorney has not received the message is anyone’s guess

building collapse about one year after the disaster on Wednesday
one week after the building partially collapsed in Davenport
The owner of the building that collapsed in downtown Davenport in 2023 has continued distancing himself from the Quad-Cities area as civil legal action against him remains pending
severely injuring a woman and displacing dozens of residents
consolidated lawsuit that remained pending as of Friday
including owner Andrew Wold and several businesses associated with him
Wold has now changed his name and is selling real estate in Florida
Wold has also divested himself from most of the properties he owned in the Quad-Cities area
Wold filed a petition for a name change in Sarasota County Circuit Court in Florida on Dec
requesting his name change from Andrew Robert Lee Wold to Andrew Michael Langel
Since Wold's petition for a name change is protected at this point under Florida law
the public cannot view the petition to see Wold's reason for the request
A webpage listing Andrew Langel as a real estate agent in Florida has since been removed the web
the name change was not reflected in the Scott County court records related to the lawsuit
The suit's plaintiffs filed a request in January that the court require Wold to deposit funds from recent sales into a trust managed by a court-appointed receiver
stating that they chose to do so after reviewing documents related to “certain real estate transactions at issue in the petition,” court records show
The filing did not provide further details about the documents it referenced or the specific reason for the withdrawal of the petition
the attorneys argued that Wold and his companies "initiated a scheme to sell off their real estate assets" to shield them from litigation
The most recent version of the plaintiff’s complaint
includes three counts which address the sales of various properties associated with Wold
Those counts contain similar language to what was used in the trust petition
Andrew Wold Investments owned 22 properties in Davenport
Andrew Wold Investments has sold 21 of those properties
This count does not include a parking lot still listed under Andrew Wold Investments in property records or an empty lot previously listed in the records that was part of an October 2023 sale
Wold signed the deed transfer for 217 Brady St.
in late March 2025 before a notary from Sarasota County
Other companies that Wold was part of have also sold properties
Of the six properties the Quad-City Times/Dispatch-Argus has tracked that Wold was an owner of outside of Andrew Wold Investments and Davenport Hotel LLC
Wold and affiliated companies have sold at least 25 properties since the collapse
The combined sale prices combined of all the properties totals about $4.8 million
Wold also sold his own Bettendorf home for $2.35 million in December 2023
a state board that mediates public records disputes
will consider whether to make a criminal investigative report into the building collapse public at its May 15 meeting
Agents with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation began investigating at the request of the city of Davenport within days of the collapse
The report was delivered to the Scott County Attorney's Office in April 2024 for a decision on whether to bring criminal charges
Scott County Attorney Kelly Cunningham announced her decision not to bring charges earlier this year
Members of the public and media outlets have requested the report through open records laws
the county is requesting a ruling from the Iowa Public Information Board that the report not be released because of potential safety threats to the building owner and manager
The Department of Public Safety has filed a motion to intervene
arguing that it is the lawful custodian of the record
The Department of Public Safety states it responded to multiple requests for the report and provided a seven-page summary of the immediate facts and circumstances
The Department of Public Safety is requesting that the Iowa Public Information Board refuse to issue an order or make a limited determination that Scott County is not the legal custodian of the report

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd provided an update on the Davenport "shoutout" over the weekend that left three high schoolers injured at a prom after-party
Three teens were injured in a shooting early Sunday morning in Davenport
the Polk County Sheriff's Office said
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd noted the location of the rental complex (in red) to a nearby Wawa
where a mob breaking out in fights was called in about 45 minutes prior to the shooting
Osceola High School officials said counselors would be on campus Monday to assist those affected
but did not give other details of the incident
Saying three teenagers from Osceola High School who were shot in a Davenport altercation early Sunday morning “had no part of the disturbance,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd gave an update Monday about the incident
He said shots came from three types of guns — a .380 caliber
much like an AR-15 — in the shootout that occurred around 3 a.m
An 18-year-old Middle Eastern male and two African-American 17-year-olds
a female with bullet grazes on her right shoulder and forearm and a male who got shrapnel in his eye and may lose sight in the eye
were shot in a car that served as “the backstop” for the shooting
they were just where they shouldn’t have been after midnight,” the Sheriff said
Judd noted video evidence shows a large gathering of people at a nearby Wawa less than an hour prior
The gathering moved to a short-term rental at the resort
He said Osceola County Sheriff’s deputies shut down a large party earlier in the night
A total of 33 shell casings were found from the three firearms
Bullets hit a nearby second-story apartment window and multiple cars nearby
“We’re working our way through a lot of video
Why is it that there were over 100 people there
and we’re doing our best to figure this out
Elizabeth Kennedy said in a social media post late Sunday night that grief counselors would be on campus Monday to help any affected students
but did not release information about the incident
"Our hearts and thoughts are with the students and families involved
I am extremely thankful that all three students survived," she said

The Frank G. Zarb School of Business hosted its biennial alumni gathering on April 23, drawing a packed house of graduates, faculty, and special guests to celebrate progress, connection, and the power of business and creativity. A highlight of the evening was a keynote from acclaimed Broadway producer Ken Davenport
whose productions have garnered Tony Awards and global acclaim
The evening was made possible thanks to alumnus and Zarb Advisory Board member Douglas Maine
who played a key role in bringing Davenport to the gathering
Davenport blended humor with insight as he demystified Broadway’s business mechanics
“Producing theater is the riskiest investment you’ll ever love to make,” Davenport quipped
sharing lessons from decades in the industry
He emphasized the value of merging art and commerce
calling Broadway “not just a business—it’s a big business.”
Davenport walked the audience through the lifecycle of a Broadway show—from idea to stage to potential global franchise—drawing fascinating parallels between Broadway and startup ventures
“Every show is like launching a startup,” he explained
raise the money…That’s how I create a solid business.”
Davenport addressed the challenging economics of Broadway
noting that only 20% of shows turn a profit
“It’s about knowing that it is a risk
He also highlighted Broadway’s global impact
from national tours and licensing deals to international productions
It ripples around the world,” he said. “The world is a better place if there is more theater in it.”
Hofstra senior vice president for development and alumni affairs and a proud Zarb alumnus
reflected on the vibrant atmosphere of the evening and the strong sense of community it fostered
“Ken Davenport’s participation in the event brought incredible energy and perspective to our community,” Kelly said
“His success on Broadway and his insights into the business behind the arts exemplify the kind of innovation and leadership we instill at Zarb.”

a Republican representing southeast Iowa who sits on the Energy and Commerce Committee
A second demonstration was organized in Indianola
cutting Planned Parenthood from funding would have dire consequences on sexual and reproductive health care across the state at a time when thousands of Iowans already can’t access care," organizers of the rally stated in a news release
The Hyde Amendment already prevents federal monies from going toward abortions
but Planned Parenthood receives Medicaid and other federal funding for other reproductive care such as contraception and testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases
According to a report from Catholic news service OSV News
House Speaker Mike Johnson said budget reconciliation — what President Donald Trump calls the big beautiful bill — could be used to "redirect funds away from big abortion and to federally qualified health centers."
Fox News reported House Republicans were considering defunding organizations such as Planned Parenthood — ones that provide abortions and receive federal funding for other services — to meet reduced spending targets
According to the Government Accountability Office
Planned Parenthood Federation of America affiliates received about $148 million in Health and Human Services grants or cooperative agreements and $1.54 billion in Medicare
The Quad-Cities does not have a Planned Parenthood location. A clinic in Bettendorf closed in 2017 after the state cut funds to family planning providers that offer abortion services
The next closest clinics are in Iowa City and Peoria
