Bystanders performed CPR but were unable to revive her. She died at the scene.
Her death was initially considered an accidental drowning. However, further coronial investigations led detectives to declare it as suspicious.
Moreton District Detective Acting Inspector Steve Windsor said a homicide investigation was launched "18 months to two years" after the incident.
The investigation was launched under Operation Victor Harlow, and detectives gathered expert statements, including information from witnesses and about the conditions of the lake at the time of Ms Davidson's death.
Mr Davidson was arrested yesterday during a visit to Brisbane from his current address in Thailand. Police will allege he was involved in his wife's drowning death.
He has been charged with one count each of murder (domestic violence), fraud and attempted fraud.
Acting Inspector Windsor said police would allege Mr Davidson made a fraudulent life insurance claim and attempted to make a second claim.
The combined life insurance was in excess of $1 million, he said.
If you need help immediately call emergency services on triple-0
Acting Inspector Windsor said it was a complex and lengthy investigation.
"Incidents are not always what they initially seem, so I thank the detectives for their diligent work in this lengthy and arduous investigation," he said.
He said Mr Davidson had been in Thailand for "some years" when the homicide investigation started, and police considered extradition but it was decided against.
The 55-year-old had returned to Queensland for family reasons when he was arrested, Acting Inspector Windsor said.
Mr Davidson's case was mentioned in the Brisbane Magistrates Court this morning. He did not appear and the matter was adjourned until later this month.
Police addressed the media after a man was charged with murder and fraud.
Detective Acting Inspector Windsor says police deemed the matter to be suspicious after talking with witnesses and gaining further evidence
"Police have consulted with a number of different experts from different fields," he says.
He says the man charged was spoken to initially after the woman's death to provide a version to police as a witness.
He says police will investigate matters seriously "no matter how long they take".
If you need help immediately, call emergency services on triple-0.
That is all from the police press conference.

He says police allege the man claimed a life insurance policy, which form the basis of the fraud charges.
He says the combined life insurance was in excess of $1 million.

– The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club is proud to announce the signing of goaltender Sergio Davidson to a WHL Scholarship & Development Agreement
“We are excited about the progress Sergio has made this year and the numbers he posted,” President and General Manager Mike Johnston said of Davidson
played for the Calgary Flames U18 and finished the year with a 2.52 goals-against-average and a .907 save percentage in 18 games played
“Sergio is an athletic goaltender who has great quickness and speed in his game.”
165- pound netminder caught the eye of the Winterhawks’ coaching staff and he was added to the team’s protected list in February 2024 after leading his U17 Flames team to multiple tournament wins with a .934 save percentage
Davidson appeared during the 2024 Neely Cup and made 60 saves over the three days
“It has been a pleasure watching Sergio grow as a goalie and a person over the last couple of years,” Alberta Regional Scout Troy Tendeck said
“This is just the next step in what could be a very exciting and rewarding career
I don’t see that changing as he progresses onward
He comes from a wonderful and supporting family

I look forward to seeing Sergio at camp again this upcoming August.”
Colin Jost has been credited as a writer on more than 300 SNL episodes and as an actor on more than 200
he hasn’t actually appeared in many traditional sketches
and that’s the extent of his work in front of the camera
The former head writer made a surprise cameo in a real sketch
and I bet you can guess what it was about: a ferry boat
This reference may go down as the most prominent ever
Host Quinta Brunson and cast members Mikey Day and Chloe Fineman were leads in a sketch playing drivers involved in a confrontation
They parked next to each other on a ferry boat and were not pleased
they had to basically play charades to insult each other
obviously provides the perfect setting for Jost to dunk on himself
You can watch the full sketch below in which Jost shows up and tries to convince them to buy his ferry boat
even claiming he’s Pete Davidson at one point…
let’s talk about the larger sketch real quick
Most of the time it’s the political sketches or the celebrity impressions that go mega-viral
this is the heart of Saturday Night Live and really sketch comedy in general
You throw some funny people into a random life situation and just let them push it as far as possible
I had a smile on my face throughout this entire sketch
and it seems like everyone involved in it was having a great time
as they acted out really random and inappropriate things
It’s been getting some traction on social media
Jost is a great comedy writer and a skilled Weekend Update host
He’s also proven time and time again that he’s willing to laugh at himself and be the butt of jokes in order to get laughs
That’s a hallmark of so many great SNL comedians who have been willing to mine their personal lives and/ or put themselves in embarrassing situations in order to amuse the audience
there’s a good chance he’ll go there a few more times this year too

The best of the ESPN class of 2025 competed in multiple high-profile settings
weekend tournaments and the McDonald's All-American game
Etiwanda (CA) finished its quest for a threepeat and is the final No. 1 team in the SCNext Top 25 rankings; IMG Academy (FL) won the Chipotle Nationals; and after a lengthy decision process, Aaliyah Chavez committed to Oklahoma
The seniors will graduate and the club circuit begins for the juniors and underclassmen
including the U16 USA Basketball trials in May (the selected roster will compete in the FIBA U16 Women's AmeriCup in June)
So, it's time for one final ranking of the 2025, 2026 and 2027 classes
Here are the biggest movers across the board -- including a new No
This was the closest No. 1 contest in the past five years. Sienna Betts, Aaliyah Chavez and Jasmine Davidson each had a legitimate claim
though Chavez held the top spot all season
She led Clackamas (OR) to the 6A OSAA championship game but fell short of winning the title
What makes her stand out: Davidson is the most complete player in this class
she is comfortable in the lead guard spot and taking over the scoring
glides to the rim and elevates gracefully when attacking
and is used to the pressures that come with the role
Davidson is also a high-assist player who rebounds very well for a guard
She has a high IQ when it comes to cutting and moving without the ball and finding post ups and easy slashing opportunities to score
she is used to guarding opponents' best players -- including perimeter players
Jazzy Davidson stuffed the stat sheet in Team USA's victory tonight! #NikeHoopSummit17 PTS6 REB6 AST3 STL3 BLK pic.twitter.com/rDBHVZlGpy
She needs to shoot more consistently from beyond the arc (high 30% or above) and via her pull up jumper
Sometimes she can find herself a little deep in the paint when she could have risen up for a 15-footer a few dribbles prior
Davidson can also work on better creating contact for trips to the free throw line
Betts, the sister of UCLA forward (and former No. 1 recruit in the class of 2022) Lauren Betts
led her high school team to the 6A CHSAA State Championship for a third time
She was also named the Morgan Wootten National Player of the Year
What makes her stand out: Betts is the prototypical new age 5-player
maneuver ball screens defensively in several different coverages and occasionally switch onto a perimeter player and defend without fouling
broad and strong frame to change shots anywhere within 15 feet of the rim
and carve out massive space for rebounding
she is effective in the traditional back-to-the-basket post-up as well as in the face-up game
Her mid-range game is more than respectable and she has started to trust the 3-ball a bit more regularly
She is also a fundamentally fantastic passer and legitimate triple-double threat
The competition and physicality for a big makes a huge jump in college -- especially a program like UCLA where your 6-7 All-American sister awaits every day in practice
Habits like finishing high or against contact become paramount
It is vital for Betts to limit her dribbles on post touches and trust her right hand more around the rim
She must increase her motor and finish better in traffic and higher off the glass
She will also need to learn how to fight boxouts and attack the offensive glass
Improving the 3-pointer will be a huge asset for the Bruins
Chavez spent the entire senior season in the top spot
Her high school team won the UIL 5A Division 2 State Championship
and she was named the Naismith Player of the Year and for a second time the Gatorade Player of the Year
What makes her stand out: Chavez is the ultimate shot-maker and the best scorer in this class
She has proven time and again that no matter the moment
and finishes her prep career with some monumental scoring records
she is a quality passing playmaker and knows how to create easy opportunities for others
This has to be incorporated more into her game as she transitions to the next level
Chavez had the ball a lot in her hands at the prep level
but is unlikely to see the same frequency in college
She will accordingly need to adjust to a different rhythm as she plays alongside
She will also need to trust the flow of the game more and learn to use her gravity to manipulate defenses
Chavez experiences lulls -- she was allowed to rest defensively during games because of the offensive load she carried with both her high school and EYBL teams
She's moderate from an athletic standpoint
This was evident during the McDonald's All-American event
Skinner led her high school team to a third consecutive state championship
she has improved her ability to create her own shot alongside becoming an excellent finisher
She is also an underrated but fierce defender
Duke is getting an elite point guard in the mold of Sue Bird
Civil will fit perfectly in Kim Caldwell's Tennessee system
with an understated quality as a distributor who can finish at the rim
An improving jumper bodes well for her continued growth
Eschmeyer has gained strength in her long 6-5 frame and jumped up 10 spots into the top-25
a high motor and can sprint the floor hard
She projects as one of the traditional effective Stanford bigs
but has recently developed a competitive edge
It has allowed her to use her physicality around the rim for rebounds and post ups and finishing better
She has an advanced handle and IQ for a wing/forward
so she's well ahead of other players when it comes to the intangibles
She currently has offers from a number of schools, including Stanford, Michigan State, South Carolina and UCLA
A major physical presence from baseline to baseline
Williams has taken huge steps in her development
She can now sprint the floor and battle inside leveraging her long
She can rise up and dunk and has great hands and feet
As she learns to execute in different defensive scenarios
she will be elite on that end of the floor
She is a fantastic early commitment for Robyn Fralick and Michigan State
Dunk after a W?? 🤷🏼♀️ pic.twitter.com/UK3lydq3fR
Thiero has an extremely high ceiling and has begun adding advanced coordination to her natural prowess
She is comfortable in the open court handling the ball and has an instinct to play off of two feet around the rim and in traffic

Long's energy initially made up for a lack of experience
But she's now added some major fundamental elements to her game: namely
reliable 3-point shooting and better ball-handling
wiry frame with a natural slashing ability
She needs to now add strength and finish higher around the rim
Mitchell took on great responsibility for her team's success this high school season
She's always had a great frame but has now sharpened every aspect of her game
knows how to operate in the post and has the IQ to facilitate
A smooth operator with an old school wing/forward game, her recruitment includes offers from schools like Texas, LSU and Ole Miss plus many others
Few freshmen had a more intense season than Griffin and Douglas did at Ontario Christian
improving her handle and consistency on her jumper to go along with incredible strength and physicality on both ends
Her recruitment includes offers from Oregon, Louisville, Maryland, Baylor, LSU, USC, Virginia Tech, SMU
She increased her motor overall and learned to pursue rebounds outside of her area and play without fouling
She showed she has touch from the outside and is starting to embrace the inevitable physicality she will need to play with her entire career
Villa is a true elite post prospect with legitimate size
and can utilize fundamental counter moves around the rim
She has an instinct to keep the ball high on finishes and rebounds
Her recruitment is heating up, and is expected to skyrocket this spring and summer. BYU has offered already

“I’m real excited about it,” Shipp said Monday
Shipp announced near the end of the basketball season in February that he would likely not return as the Warriors’ head coach after 25 seasons
He will officially retire from public school teaching later this month
“It was just time for a change,” Shipp said
I guess the wear and tear of getting up everyday and going to work just took a bit of a toll
Luke’s texted him to see if he knew of any coaches who might be interested in leading the Wildcats’ girls program
“I called them back and said that I would be,” he said
Shipp won 610 games at Davidson and led his team to six final fours
Luke’s team next Monday and set up a spring training schedule and a plan for summer workouts
“The schedule for next season is already made out
We will be playing a lot of smaller schools that I don’t know much about whereas I’ve been used to playing the McGills and Murphys of the world
I’ll have to familiarize myself with some different schools in the area.”
We will get a good plan ready and put it in place
We fell short the last few years at Davidson.”
Luke’s athletic director Meredith Donald said the school was “thrilled” to have Shipp leading the girls program
“He brings a wealth of knowledge and a strong commitment to developing student athletes on and off the court,” she said
“We are excited about the future of our program under his leadership.”

Harley-Davidson reported its first quarter 2025 fiscal numbers, and as expected, the results weren’t great. Revenue and net income were down through the quarter, though embattled Chief Executive Officer Jochen Zeitz says the numbers weren’t as bad as what was expected
The first quarter of 2025 generated $1.329 billion in revenue
a 23% decline from the same period of 2024
dropping 43% to $133 million from the $235 million reported in Q1 last year
Harley-Davidson reported retail sales of approximately 31,000 motorcycles in the quarter
compared to about 39,400 in the same period last year
North America remains Harley-Davidson’s primary market
Motorcycle shipments were down 33% to 38,600 units from 57,700 bikes
though that isn’t necessarily a bad thing as dealer inventory levels remain too high
Worldwide inventory levels are at about 56,000 units
which is 19% lower than the 69,000 units reported in the first quarter last year
Reducing shipments will help cool some of the pressures dealers are experiencing
with Harley-Davidson targeting a 10% decrease in inventory levels worldwide by the end of the year
but Harley-Davidson’s first quarter presentation included some interesting details that go beyond the numbers
LiveWire’s efforts to reduce costs are continuing as planned
but sales remain dismal with just 33 units sold in the first quarter compared to 117 units last year
LiveWire reported an operating loss of $20 million during Q1 2025
an improvement of a loss of $29 million despite the drop in sales
LiveWire’s parent company is saying it’s running out of patience
Zeitz admits that EV adoption has been much slower than originally anticipated
due to the end of electric motorcycle tax credits and the slow expansion of charging infrastructure
Zeitz says Harley-Davidson is “evaluating all options for its investment in LiveWire,” and will not be providing any additional investments beyond LiveWire’s current line of credit agreement
Any additional funding will have to come from external capital
LiveWire is currently working on a maxi-scooter with the help of Kymco, which we believe will be called the “Doki”
it’s likely the Taiwanese company is doing a lot of the heavy lifting on the project
with LiveWire mainly contributing the S2 Arrow powertrain
Harley-Davidson has been making its big new model announcements early in the new year instead of its traditional fall launch
was to announce the new models closer to the start of the North American spring riding season
After getting feedback from customers and dealers
Harley-Davidson has decided to reverse course and return to a fall launch schedule starting with the 2026 model year
a fall launch helps to extend its sales season
and perhaps help smooth the flow of inventory
Zeitz again confirmed Harley-Davidson will be releasing new entry-level cruisers with lower price points for the 2026 model year
Zeitz didn’t go into too much detail about what these bikes will look like
though a footnote in a presentation slide on Harley-Davidson’s market share hints that the small cruisers will fall between 601cc and 1,200cc
Harley-Davidson touted its market share in the “H-D U.S
Large Cruiser” category of bikes 1,200cc and larger
Harley-Davidson switched the slide to show “H-D U.S
including models in both small 601-1,200cc models and large cruisers displacing 1,201cc and higher
These new small cruisers will step into a void created by the discontinuation of the old air-cooled Sportsters and the failed liquid-cooled Street lineup
Speaking on the company’s previous attempts at this market
Zeitz says Harley-Davidson had been losing money on entry-level models for three decades
we've never had an entry model that actually made money for Harley-Davidson,” says Zeitz
“And we believe that we have an opportunity now based on how we're engineering these bikes to actually come out with a product that is competitive
sound and feel very Harley-Davidson and profitable.”
Zeitz confirmed the company will be introducing an “iconic classic” cruiser for next year
but we should expect it to be part of the fall launch
There have been several reports over the last few weeks that Harley-Davidson was planning to sell off its financial division
Harley-Davidson’s Chief Financial Officer and President of Commercial and previous Senior Vice President of HDFS Jonathon Root addressed these rumors
confirming the company is evaluating outside investment into the division
Harley-Davidson won’t be seeking an outright sale of HDFS
but rather a long-term strategic partnership to maximize the value of the financial services
while reducing the parent company’s overall costs at funding it
HDFS’ operating income grew 19% to $64 million from $54 million
Harley-Davidson faces headwinds from new tariffs
Harley-Davidson says tariff impacts have been fairly minimal for the first quarter
but the impacts are expected to rise through the rest of the year
Based on the tariff picture as of April 29
Harley-Davidson expects a year-end tariff impact of $130-170 million
Harley-Davidson currently operates four manufacturing centers
injection molding and painting are performed in Tomahawk
and final assembly for North America in York
Final motorcycle assembly of Revolution Max models and bikes destined for Asia
accounting for 95% of Harley-Davidson’s U.S
about 75% of Harley-Davidson parts are sourced from U.S.-based production facilities
The first quarter presentation made little reference to Harley-Davidson’s current boardroom drama
specifically the proxy battle with major investor H Partners
The fate of Harley-Davidson’s board of directors will be decided at the annual shareholder meeting on May 14
with H Partners urging shareholders to withhold votes from Zeitz and long-time board members Sara Levinson and Thomas Lineberger
A central point of contention in H Partners’ campaign is the ongoing search for Zeitz’s successor as CEO
but failed to get majority board approval earlier this year
That may change if the proxy battle swings in their favor

thanks as always for your investigation and analysis

On May 5, 2025, DA Davidson analyst Michael Shlisky announced an updated price target for Caterpillar (CAT, Financial)
This adjustment reflects a 1.85% increase compared to the previous target
Despite the raised price target, DA Davidson maintains a "Neutral" rating for Caterpillar (CAT, Financial)
This update suggests a steady outlook for the company while acknowledging potential growth prospects
The price target and rating were issued in USD, highlighting the analyst's perspective on the stock's performance in the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) market context. Stakeholders can now consider this new information as part of their investment strategies concerning Caterpillar (CAT, Financial)
Based on the consensus recommendation from 28 brokerage firms, Caterpillar Inc's (CAT, Financial) average brokerage recommendation is currently 2.5

despite having a previous felony conviction for especially aggravated stalking in Williamson County
FOX 17 News first discovered back in September of last year the Davidson County magistrate who set the bond for Sterling couldn't make an informed decision because of a lack of access to out of county or state criminal records
We also reported on another instance where access to National Crime Information Center (NCIC) could have made a difference
Joshua Holly, who was accused of threatening mass violence
Judge Jim Todd recognized this as a problem in a previous phone interview and promised he was working on getting it addressed
We kept the pressure up and checked in to find out when the problem would be fixed
Multiple people got involved to make sure magistrates have the information they need
who spearheaded the movement; Metro Council's Vice Mayor; Metro Councilmember and Public Health and Safety Committee Chair Erin Evans; general sessions and trial court judges; administrators; the district attorney's office and the Family Safety Center
the Director of the Office of Family Safety
"It is wonderful that commissioners will now have the tools and resources they need to set bonds and bond conditions in a manner that can better secure victim safety."
Mayor Freddie O'Connell has included $675,000 in the budget to hire administrative assistants for magistrates to look at all the records using NCIC
I have been waiting and the day is here," she said
but if it's voted in as is by the Metro Council
the change of allowing magistrates access to NCIC will come to fruition

and longtime Davidson College supporters Don
are creating an eight-figure fund to support the college’s men’s and women’s basketball teams
will provide a critical start for Davidson’s efforts to compete in a transformed college sports world in which colleges and universities share revenue with players.
Curry and fellow alum Matt Berman also will serve as assistant general managers for Davidson basketball
The college asked them to serve as volunteer advisers
investing their time and sharing their experience with both men’s and women’s basketball.
Davidson also has hired Austin Buntz as general manager and assistant athletic director for basketball development
Buntz is a former member of the global basketball sports marketing team at Under Armour and has been on the athletic fundraising team at Davidson since 2021.
said he wants Davidson’s scholar-athletes to be able to compete in the top ranks of college athletics in a landscape where those athletes are compensated for use of their name
“The Davidson experience is top notch,” Curry said
“My journey from when I got to Davidson in 2006 to now demonstrated that I had the opportunity to play basketball at the highest level
an amazing network through the Davidson alumni and continue to wave the Davidson flag
high character student athletes to have that same experience.”
who played soccer for three years at Davidson and has an ownership stake in the English football club Burnley FC
said Davidson provided a formative experience for him and that he hopes his family’s gift will spark support across the college community.
There are very few places in higher education that can offer demanding academics with elite athletics in the way that Davidson can
Davidson will always be a world-class academic institution
and I am proud to be part of the solution that allows Davidson to remain a place where elite athletes can go to compete at the D1 level AND get a fabulous education
to sustain a central part of its identity and culture
said Davidson College President Doug Hicks ’90.
providing one of the best athletic programs in the country is an integral part of our identity as one of the nation’s best liberal arts colleges,” Hicks said
“The Currys and Bermans have provided an extraordinary gift
and they will give of their own time and expertise to ensure that we can continue providing an unparalleled educational experience — for our scholar-athletes and for our entire college community.”
Davidson College announced in February that it would opt in to the landmark settlement of a long-running lawsuit against the NCAA that seeks compensation for athletes for endorsements and media appearances
would allow colleges and universities to compensate athletes for use of their name
image and likeness — revenue that the athletes already can secure from corporate sponsors
wrote in a message to the college community last month that the college enters the new sports environment while upholding its commitment to academics
Davidson long has stood out in college sports for
grade point averages and graduation rates among athletes that even edge ahead of the college’s overall figures.
Clunie said basketball remains Davidson’s flagship sport but the benefits of focusing on that game extend further.
“When our basketball programs are successful,” Clunie wrote
“they provide much-needed revenue and exposure to support all our athletics programs and raise the overall visibility of the college.”
Clunie pledged that no other college programming — academic or student life — and no other sport would be cut to fund the revenue sharing for basketball
He wrote that the college would raise additional money.
Curry’s and Berman’s announcement filled in the details for how Davidson will launch that effort
Hicks and Clunie said their aim is to further build capacity for revenue sharing through additional fundraising
said the Atlantic 10 is going to keep pace with being one of the top basketball-centric conferences in the country and Davidson wants to compete for championships every year
Programs in the A10 are highly competitive on the court
but equally competitive in how they have attacked the new landscape of college athletics
and the demonstration of their love for our program and their trust in our leadership to allow us to work towards being just as competitive
said the Curry-Berman gift is transformative.
“We enter this new world of college sports with the ability to compete for championships,” Fulks said
“We are eager to build on this generosity in order for Davidson to continue to match up with the other teams in our conference
Matt and other alums and supporters who have stood shoulder to shoulder with us.”
Curry’s and Berman’s involvement includes sharing their advice from years in the college and professional sports worlds and helping guide the teams in a collegiate athletic environment that has taken on facets of the pros.
“The goal for this is to invest in the next student athlete that’s coming into Davidson today,” Curry said
“They don’t have to take cuts on what the market says they deserve to be part of the brand of what it means to be a Davidson scholar-athlete with integrity in your academic experience
The commitment to a four-year graduation process provides countless opportunities professionally in sports or as a game changer in life
And that leads into my role as an assistant GM with Matt Berman – our ability to be a resource and a sounding board for the program
to develop personal relationships with each of them to help guide them every step of the way through their Davidson experience.”
and he has established his own for-profit companies
include the Eat.Learn.Play Foundation in Oakland
which provides access and opportunities for amateur golfers on and off the course
a consumer finance company in which Matt and his sister
have a lifelong connection from high school basketball on Long Island
Matt Berman now manages the family’s businesses
including an ownership stake in Burnley FC
an English football club about 30 miles north of Manchester
Erica Berman led the family’s bid to restart Charlotte’s WNBA team.
“This Curry-Berman gift weaves together Davidson’s rare strengths,” Hicks said
“especially the power of community among alums and leaders
to help move the college forward in an uncharted world of college athletics.”

When Isabel Schmidt '25 joined the Skate Club at Davidson College
it led her on an unexpected journey from beginner skater to competitive derby player
Isabel Schmidt '25 (she/her) is an Environmental Studies major on the natural science track from Asheville
After graduating from Davidson this spring
she hopes to find environmental work in Charlotte.
and I felt so nervous to stray away from the few friends I had started making on campus.
a club teaching people how to roller skate
I went back to my dorm that night and ordered the cheapest pair of roller skates I could find online and decided to go to the next event Skate Club held
including me and a friend from my music theory class
Gabby and I found ourselves going to every event they hosted
excitedly learning every new skill the skaters were willing to teach us
we decided to run for the Skate Club e-Board together
agreed to be roommates in our sophomore year
Savannah Vonesh started at Davidson when I was a sophomore
Having played roller derby for years at home
she decided to start the Death by Davidson roller derby team here
knowing little to nothing about the sport except that it sounded extremely cool
we were starting our first practices.
Gabby (Rinker Bell) and Savannah (Piranha)
and grew so many more friendships with everyone who has come to our events and practices over the years
And Savannah introduced me to playing derby more competitively with the Charlotte Roller Derby team
and didn't feel very comfortable in athletic spaces
But roller derby is a sport that prides itself on being inclusive in every way possible
I'm so proud to have been a part of creating the roller derby team and working with the Skate Club during my years at Davidson
and connections to building community in Charlotte and beyond
Looking back to that nervous first year looking at posters in Union
I never would have expected to be as passionate about derby as I am
If there's one thing I can tell any first year at Davidson
it's to go to that event that looks interesting
It could change your whole college experience

Varnell is getting another shot in the spotlight
On April 15, BET+ announced a new Martin spinoff centered on Davidson’s character
The spinoff has gotten a straight-to-series order from BET+
Martin Lawrence is a co-creator of the series and will executive produce
Today, May 1, marks the 28th anniversary of the Martin series finale, which aired on May 1, 1997, on Fox
Here’s everything we know so far about the new Tommy Davidson Martin spinoff
Though Varnell’s time on Martin was brief, the writers provided him with plenty of backstory. When Varnell first burst onto the scene, Martin was feeling insecure about his stagnant career. This crisis was only worsened by Varnell’s transformation from a deejay to an Arsenio Hall-esque talk-show host
Varnell Hill will pick up the story as the once-thriving show struggles to maintain cultural relevance amid interference from executives and stakeholders
The series will explore the behind-the-scenes drama while incorporating a fresh comedic tone
Varnell Hill will be a BET+ exclusive series
The original series aired on Fox from 1992-1997
A premiere date will be announced at a later time
only one actor has been announced for the Varnell Hill
and it’s the one that counts: Tommy Davidson
now you don’t have to,” said Davidson in a press release when the series was announced
“I’m excited and honored to be a part of such a creative project with the brilliant mind of Martin Lawrence
Fans have requested it and now it’s coming to BET+!”
Fans will have to wait and see which characters and actors join him
but let’s be honest: Varnell is such a standout character that putting anyone next to him will make for great TV
The last time Martin and Varnell were in the same room
Martin tried to choke him out on his own late-night TV show
Maybe they’ve patched things up in the decades since
but it’s hard to imagine them wanting to be in the vicinity of one another
Martin Lawrence is already on board as co-creator and executive producer
so there’s a chance he could reprise his iconic role — though nothing has been confirmed
and Rae Proctor will also serve as executive producers
