act of rebellion three decades in Starting out life as a progressive thrash band enamoured with the politics of punk the last three decades have seen Propagandhi forge a path that’s strayed ever further from predictability Their skate-punk roots giving way to a denser flecked with melodic hardcore and prog rock one thing that has remained constant over the years is a commitment to radical political engagement and a drive for positive change Taking a firm stance on everything from anti-fascism anti-racism and anti-capitalism to animal rights frontman Chris Hannah’s searing intellect and Get the album - HERE harried students at the University of Texas at Austin rush across Speedway to get to class stopping only to dodge a dangerously fast Lime scooter several students made a pitstop to get their makeup done by one of over a dozen drag performers each in vibrant outfits and elaborate makeup of their own a little more colorful and sparkly than before The performers showed up—some even calling out of their day jobs—for the student-run initiative called the Day of Drag which encouraged students to show up to class in drag to protest the University of Texas System’s ban on drag performances As university systems across the state have enacted similar bans and the Texas Legislature continues to attack LGBTQ+ rights students are shouldering the weight of advocating for their rights.  Texas A&M’s ban came just ahead of the scheduled date for Draggieland an annual drag show hosted by the student-led Queer Empowerment Council began fielding questions from reporters and administrators about their event being banned “We were completely blindsided,” Gonce told the Texas Observer Within a week, the council teamed up with the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, a civil libertarian legal group that advocates for free speech on college campuses, to sue A&M for infringing on their First Amendment rights. A federal judge temporarily blocked the university’s policy on March 24. In her ruling Judge Lee Rosenthal suggested the students would prevail in their free speech claim and wrote: “Anyone who finds the performance or performers offensive has a simple remedy: don’t go.”   Draggieland went on as planned at the A&M campus in College Station.  Gonce first joined the council as a representative for a different student organization They said they enjoy being able to do more activism work as part of the Council because Transcend focuses more internally on resources for its members “Having a central place to go to make our voices heard has been really good,” Gonce said Thomas decided to have students go to class in drag because the decision explicitly forbade the university from hosting drag performances “We’re definitely pushing the line a little bit,” Thomas told the Observer “But we’re not actually crossing the line.” Thomas got the event approved by the Office of the Dean of Students A steady stream of students came by to get glammed up by the artists Some students walked away with faces sporting pastel glitter and rhinestones others with strong contours in deep blue or purple Graduate student Savvy Cornett said they were looking forward to wearing their full face of makeup to the animal physiology class they TA for “I’ve always wanted to have my makeup done via a drag queen and I’m so excited to go to class later” Cornett said Last session, Abbott signed Senate Bill 12, which would have criminalized “sexually oriented” drag performances performed in front of minors. Since his deportation, the Trump administration has defied a Supreme Court order to return Abrego Garcia to the US.  Jason Ralph writes that the administration sees the deportation as part of its foreign policy in a way that transcends oversight in the name of public security He argues that US power should be subject to judicial and Congressional oversight even when it is being exercised outside of the US President Trump had an opportunity to comply with that order when El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele visited the White House on April 14th. Instead, the President argued in a press conference that the US had no legal authority now that Abrego Garcia was in El Salvador. He then turned to Bukele who described the idea of ‘smuggling’ a ‘terrorist’ back into the US as ‘preposterous’ In open defiance of the Court judgment, Trump then described those suggesting such an idea as ‘sick people’. Secretary of State Marco Rubio followed that up with the emphatic statement that: ‘the foreign policy of the United States is conducted by the President … and no court in the United States has a right to conduct a foreign policy of the United States Behind this short exchange is a legal and political argument that reminds us of the way international relations, or more specifically the ‘anarchic’ international system based on territorial sovereignty, can enable the ‘imperial’ presidency. That term is associated with Arthur Schlesinger’s well-known book The concern that the executive branch would use foreign policy to by-pass the Constitution’s checks and threaten individual rights does go back to the republic’s first foreign policy debate Jeffersonian republicans worried that because the Constitution gave Congress a key role in ratifying treaties the President’s proclamation unilaterally broke a treaty That was a power grab that could threaten the rights of Americans This refers to the moment the sovereign – or in this case a president – transcends the rule of law in the name of public security The Jeffersonian principle behind a system of checks and balances is that liberty is unsafe if the power to suspend the law rests in the hands of one man The appropriate balance between rights and security is best found in the deliberations across Congress and the courts reason – rather than the interests or whims of the President – remains sovereign It is not just Abrego Garcia’s future that is at stake the constitutional idea that the US is a country based on reason and law is being challenged Modern international society is now based on the principle of territorial sovereignty and sovereign equality which means that the rule of law applies globally albeit mediated by a pluralist system of states The Trump administration seemingly understands this last point very well and appears to be building its domestic strategy around it Once individuals like Abrego Garcia are deported they in principle fall under another zone of law (El Salvador’s) but the US government knows that in practice that is a zone of power; and in most of its bilateral relationships the US is dominant The Trump administration also knows – or at least it claims – that as a foreign policy issue it (and not the other branches of government) wields US power We heard similar arguments during the Bush administration’s war on terror Detainees were held in Guantanamo Bay because the 1903 lease agreement gives the US ‘complete jurisdiction and control’ over the naval base but maintains ‘ultimate sovereignty’ rests with Cuba Bush therefore argued the detainees had no rights under the US Constitution The implication was that Cuba had the legal authority to intervene on the detainee’s behalf but of course that would never happen given international power relations the principles of territorial sovereignty and sovereign (if not political) equality were being used to construct an anarchic space where individuals were governed by executive power rather than the rule of reason and law The question being asked now is whether that political check will support the courts if the Trump administration continues to defy their rulings. Names “Sunita” represents “she who has good conduct or behavior.” Dr. Sunita Sah tried to live her life by that definition while growing up in an immigrant family in 1980s northern England that meant doing as she was told – especially by her parents and teachers Sah – a physician-turned-organizational psychologist in the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management in the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business and a core faculty member in the Cornell Health Policy Center – began to realize that obedience wasn’t necessarily a proxy for being “good.” The ability to respond with “no” – when that act of defiance is fueled by one’s beliefs and values – has changed her whole outlook “Defiance is acting in accordance with your true values when there is pressure to do otherwise,” she said “Defiance is not just saying no to something that is not right It’s saying yes to the world you want to create.” Sah has written “Defy: The Power of No in a World That Demands Yes,” released on Jan and clear steps on how to move from intention to action Sah reveals why people need to develop more agency in their lives and change the world they live in “Defy” has been honored as one of Amazon’s Editor’s Picks for Best Nonfiction for 2025.  Sah spoke with the Chronicle about her new book Question: Was there a tipping point to where you felt you had to write this book Or was it a culmination of your experiences growing up and as a young professional Answer: The book was born out of both a culmination of experience and a singular moment shaped by a lifetime of questioning what it means to navigate societal expectations I was taught that being obedient was “good,” that authority figures were to be trusted But I also witnessed the darker side of compliance even physically punishing “bad” students under the guise of maintaining order I read Stanley Milgram’s infamous obedience experiments where participants administered what they believed to be life-threatening electric shocks to others simply because they were told to These experiences made me question why defiance was often vilified and why obedience was celebrated A defining moment came in 2020 with the murder of George Floyd Watching rookie police officers comply with their superior’s orders even as those orders caused unimaginable harm brought echoes of Milgram’s subjects to life It was a sobering reminder of how deeply ingrained – and dangerous – our propensity for compliance can be I’ve felt a tension between the need to act in accordance with my values and the pressure to be seen as “good.” Writing “Defy” was my way of addressing that tension and sharing what I’ve learned through decades of research and personal experience Q: The act of defiance has negative connotations (i.e. a child who defies their teacher) but isn’t it really a positive affirming act when employed in the name of your beliefs and values Defiance is often misunderstood as rebellion for rebellion’s sake or as a purely disruptive act But true defiance is deeply constructive: It’s about alignment – saying “no” to what doesn’t serve your values and “yes” to integrity and truth defiance isn’t about chaos or disobedience; it’s about courage and clarity It can create positive ripples in workplaces shifting norms and opening up space for fairness like speaking up in a meeting or questioning an unfair policy A: I hope they come away with a sense of empowerment and possibility Defiance doesn’t have to be loud or dramatic – it can be quiet and deeply personal It’s not about being naturally bold or fearless; it’s a skill anyone can learn and practice I want readers to see that defiance isn’t a final dramatic act like setting a boundary or asking a critical question can build confidence over time and inspire others to do the same My hope is that hesitant readers will feel encouraged to take those first steps and realize that they have more agency than they think There’s a glossary and a guide to defiance in the appendix; why did you feel it was important to include those A: “Defy” is as much a guide as it is a narrative I wanted readers to walk away not just inspired but equipped The glossary gives people rebellion for the sake of being a rebel—she was describing what it means to stand in alignment with our values especially when we feel pressure to do otherwise Sunita Sah is a physician turned organizational psychologist and a tenured professor at Cornell University Defy: The Power of No in a World That Demands Yes explores how we can act with integrity even when there’s pressure to comply Her research has been featured in The New York Times To defy is simply to act in accordance with your true values when there is pressure to do otherwise Sunita grew up in a culture that equated obedience with goodness “We start equating being compliant with being good and being defiant with being bad,” she explained But through both personal experience and years of research What do we sacrifice by being so compliant?” Rather than viewing defiance as disobedience or aggression she now defines it as something more powerful: “To defy is simply to act in accordance with your true values when there is pressure to do otherwise.” With this redefinition defiance becomes a form of integrity—a way to reclaim our agency “We’re so trained to comply,” Dr “and we don’t get trained for defiance.” The result We go along when we know we should speak up that silence can have devastating consequences “One survey found that nine out of 10 healthcare workers don’t speak up when they see a colleague or a physician making a mistake,” she said “And it’s similar in other industries as well If you look at another survey of crew members on commercial airlines only half of them spoke up when they noticed an error.” staying silent can corrode our sense of self “If you’re silent when you feel something is wrong it can really be quite soul destroying.” A big part of learning to defy is learning to listen to what Sunita calls tension—that internal discomfort we feel when something doesn’t sit right “Tension is the first stage of defiance,” she explained “We sweep it away thinking it’s not worth our doubt But really listening to that tension is very important.” Sah shared a personal example from her time as a patient in the ER just because the doctor told me to have it I found it very difficult… I thought the tension would go away It actually made me feel worse and it grew and I experienced a lot of regret from it.” Her takeaway: Even those with knowledge and experience need to train for defiance “I realized I need to train myself for defiance.” That’s when she first encountered the famous—and ethically controversial—Milgram experiment on obedience participants were told by an authority figure to administer increasingly severe electric shocks to another person (an actor who did not receive the shocks but the participants didn’t know that) whenever they gave an incorrect answer Despite hearing protests and signs of pain many participants continued simply because they were told to.  revealing how easily people can comply with authority—even when it conflicts with their values “What they found was that every single person pulled the lever at 150 volts Every single person pulled the lever at 300 volts And 65% pulled the lever at 450 volts—the deadly maximum voltage.” What fascinated her most wasn’t just the obedience “They had many signs of nervous laughter they were stuttering… It wasn’t that they were happy to go up to 450 volts They just didn’t know how to resist.” That’s what drives her work now—giving people the tools to resist when it matters most defiance isn’t about being loud or confrontational It’s about building the skill to act when our values are at risk Defiance is available and necessary for all of us Because our skill set really drives our confidence and our ability to say no.” Speak up in everyday low-stakes moments—like when a taxi driver takes the long route or when a colleague makes an offhand comment that doesn’t sit right “If you are not used to being defiant if you’ve never been trained for defiance we want to find some small situations where we can start practicing.” “We can start thinking about these situations that we might encounter… visualize it and then we practice by scripting it out and role playing That’s the thing that changes our neural pathways.” Defiance is a skill and we can help others build it too So how do we encourage others—especially team members—to own their agency people don’t speak up due to two main reasons… they don’t feel safe or they feel it won’t be effective,” Dr “What leaders can do is create the type of environment where it becomes very apparent that it’s safe And that
