Group 2 title at Berkshore Valley Golf Course in Oak Ridge.William Foley
to win by three strokes over three others to win medalist honors Monday at the NJSIAA North Jersey
Group 2 sectional tournament at Berkshire Valley Golf Course in Oak Ridge
The win was Aronson’s first 18-hole tournament triumph of the season and was the first sectional title for a Demarest golfer since 2013 when Tom LaMorte
“The conditions played a huge role in my process out there
It forced me to think about each decision I made on the course
The conditions also tested my patience and my ability to execute important shots down the stretch as the rain started late in the round,” said Aronson after his successful round
I have been hitting the ball well this season but have been struggling around and on the greens
This should give me confidence to continue to play good golf moving into more 18-hole tournaments in high school and leading up to the bulk of my tournament season.”
“The team was disappointed to finish second at the Morris County Tournament on April 30 behind Delbarton
so they were motivated to put in the work in the few days between tournaments to win this one,” said Mendham head coach Shira Brown
“This title means a lot to us because it shows our resilience and that we can bounce back from disappointments
Three of the four tournament players (Liam
and Michael) have been together since freshmen year
Chris Lubas was the fourth tournament player that year and after he graduated
Seth has filled out the tournament squad for the past three years.”
“They have all played together so long and support each other and it means a lot to them to all be going to the TOC together next week
I am so proud of how hard they have worked and all they have already accomplished and am so excited to see what the next three weeks hold for them.”
The two teams from each site with the lowest total scores advance to the state group championships
and the two individuals with the lowest scores that are not on an advancing team move on to the Tournament of Champions
to be held at Raritan Valley Country Club in Bridgewater on Monday

A lawsuit filed against the Demarest Board of Education says LGBTQ+ students faced frequent bullying and district staff members did not intervene
A transgender student and her family filed the suit against the school board in state Superior Court
saying the district failed to protect her from constant harassment from fellow students over several years
Superintendent Michael Fox did not immediately return a call and email for comment
The lawsuit says the unidentified student transitioned in September 2016 and was enrolled as female at Demarest Middle School
though the school did know she was assigned male at birth
The family asked the school counselor to speak to their daughter
but the counselor called child protective services
and the lawsuit accuses the counselor of lying to the agency
"The report was 'unfounded,' but the school counselor said she would 'do it again in a heartbeat,'" the lawsuit says
The student's older brother was repeatedly asked if their sister was trans
and the parents sent an email to Demarest Middle School Principal John Regan in May 2022 about a rumor that the student was transgender and asked that he put a stop to it
another student began a Snapchat chain with friends
calling her "weird" and a "freak," the suit says
It says the parents asked the school to intervene but officials failed to do so and didn't respond to an inquiry the student's parents made about filing a harassment
the transgender student said another student pushed her in the hall and called her a "freak," the suit says
The harassment against the student continued with her being pushed and called names and not being allowed to sit with other students
The parents said they were never given any investigation information
write-ups or reports from the school and that their complaints about the bullying were "disregarded."
not long after the start of the 2023 school year
another student threw ice cream at the student and tried to hit her
The suit says the student who defended the transgender student "was disciplined by the school
showing the school targets children who identify as LGBTQ."
Other instances of alleged bullying and harassment included pushing the transgender student in the classroom and not allowing her to sit anywhere
surrounding and taunting her at an after-school volleyball game
and pointing and laughing every time she sang at a Christmas concert
The student said Regan refused to help her
The suit alleges Regan went to look at a video of the volleyball incident but never returned and failed to do anything about the behavior at the concert
the principal told the parents their HIB complaints were unfounded
Fox said he didn't care that the parents wanted to proceed further with their claims
saying the district violated the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination and caused the victim emotional distress
loss of self-esteem and family life disruption

OLD TAPPAN — The final of the 2025 BCWCA girls basketball tournament will deliver some history one way or another
Saddle River Day seeks to continue its unprecedented championship dominance in the championship bracket
while Demarest continues a spirited pursuit of its first county title
Those two teams faced each other in last year's quarterfinals and now will compete in the 50th edition of the Bergen County girls basketball title game
Here's a recap of Sunday's semifinal action from Old Tappan
Top seed Saddle River Day has not faced much resistance historically since starting a run of eight consecutive county championships
the only games the Rebels won by single digits were county finals in the last two years against Teaneck and Immaculate Heart
So it was a shock to see Saddle River Day (14-8) trailing by as many as nine points in the third quarter of Sunday's semifinal against Old Tappan
The Rebels stormed back and held on for a 54-53 win to reach a ninth straight county final
"It was definitely closer than we wanted it to be," senior Faith Williamson said
That and defense I think is what helped us win."
Grace Darling hit a key 3-pointer for the Rebels to erase the deficit and put Saddle River Day ahead 42-41 with 5:52 to go
Williamson scored 10 of her team-high 23 points in the second half and secured the win with five key free throws in the second half
"It came down to defense and execution," Williamson said
"We stuck together and made some big shots down the stretch."
Sienna Drullinsky did her best to keep Old Tappan (13-8) in the game
including a basket and a free throw to cut the lead to 52-51 with 27 seconds left in the game
But Saddle River Day refused to let the game get away
we know it doesn't mean we are going to win now," Williamson said
"We want to win now just like the girls who came before us did."
The Norsewomen had not been to the county semifinals since 1992 prior to Sunday's clash with No
But it wasn't enough for them simply to be there
6 Demarest into the county final for the first time ever
We just needed to adjust and the second half needed to be ours."
Teaneck's Lexi Carnegie reached a milestone in defeat
netting her 1,000th career point on a free throw in the first quarter
Carnegie scored 15 in the first half to build an early lead for the Highwaywomen
Trailing by as many as 14 points in the first half
Demarest narrowed the deficit to 26-19 at halftime
Teaneck held on to a 34-29 lead entering the final eight minutes
when sophomore Deanna Finkelstein was able to get some key buckets in the low post
"We looked at each possession one by one," Finkelstein said
"We focused on the little things and knew it was important to do that because they are such a physical team."
Finkelstein tied the game at 38 with 3:52 to go
junior Gabriella Mittelman scored five straight points for the Norsewomen (20-2)
including a jumper to put Demarest up 43-42 with 1:37 left
Demarest made some key stops and cemented the landmark victory with free throws down the stretch
"It's a great moment to celebrate with your teammates," Mittelman said
"We were down earlier and worked our way back
it gets everyone pumped up in that moment."
The 50th Bergen County girls basketball tournament is set to tip off Wednesday at Fair Lawn
it cements a lasting legacy the program has had on the tournament since beginning their winning ways nearly a decade ago
Approaching the final of the golden anniversary of the event
the Rebels can put a bow on an era they have defined in the county
Saddle River Day has had to go through a variety of different teams in the final over the years and a few have come close to dethroning the Rebels
The latest team hoping to stand in the way is Demarest
which has not only never won the county crown but will compete in the final for the first time ever on Wednesday
"It shows the hard work is paying off," Jurjevic said
"I hope that people just stand up and realize that these kids can do this."
Jurjevic does have personal experience with the Bergen County tournament final as a player
she saw her team win the 2001 county title
Jurjevic hopes for a full-circle moment and more history for the Norsewomen
"Hopefully we can go out there and clip one from them," Jurjevic said
"[Saddle River Day coach Joseph Pedone] has a really good team and seasoned players
We've got to prepare and we just hope to continue our journey."

Academy programs are changing the landscape of North Jersey athletics
The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association has started the process of altering the way schools with these types of programs − and the ability to draw students from outside a traditional geographic zone − are treated when it comes to state tournaments
there are concerns that these academy programs can be used to funnel athletes to specific schools
Classifications for state tournaments are currently based solely on enrollment
even though schools with academy programs can pull in from a larger pool of potential students
One of the most notable examples in Bergen County is the Bergen Tech satellite education programs in which students go to class at the Northern Valley high schools
The Demarest girls basketball program reached this weekend's Bergen County Tournament semifinals for the first time since 1992
Old Tappan is one of the most successful athletic programs in North Jersey across the board
though coach Brian Dunn says his two-time state champion football program has not had any players from the Bergen Tech academy programs
The Bergen Tech academy program is open to any prospective high-school student in Bergen County
Eighth-graders must be in good academic standing and show an interest in a major of their choice
They have to provide letters of recommendation from their current teachers in English
and the program has no cost to the student
“Bergen County Institutes for Science and Technology programs are thriving,” Bergen Tech assistant superintendent Andrea Sheridan said in an email
“We had an increased number of applicants each year [and] will have our second consecutive graduating class in the UX/UI program and frequently receive positive feedback from current students
Both Old Tappan and Demarest offer two distinct programs: The Institute for Interactive Design and Technology
and the Institute for Sports Medicine and Exercise Science
The online student handbook details which campus (Demarest or Old Tappan) a student attends based on his or her home district
This is a key point because that determines which school the student plays at for athletics
“The student’s home district pays tuition to Bergen County Technical schools as a supplement to county funding," Sheridan said
"The home district also provides transportation to and from Bergen County Technical Schools
“It gives more students in Bergen County access to Career and Technology Education programs."
When asked if athletics plays a role in the admissions process
“Athletic ability/performance is not considered for acceptance.”
While the kids in the program receive Bergen Tech diplomas
they are not Bergen Tech Knights in sports
“It’s not a question that Bergen County Technical schools does not ‘want’ these students to play for us
it is the fact that the students spend 100 percent of their time at Northern Valley
with Northern Valley students,” Sheridan said
“It is logistically impossible to transport them back to other BCTS campuses to play sports.”
Demarest and Old Tappan had reached a point that declining enrollment meant they had open classrooms and talented faculty they wished to keep
In order to maintain their reputations as two of the state’s top academic schools
they entered into a partnership with Bergen Tech
The Institute for Interactive Design and Technology opened in 2020 and the Institute for Sports Medicine and Exercise Science opening in 2022
The program offers opportunities to students throughout Bergen County
Demarest and Old Tappan are not breaking any rules currently on the NJSIAA books, but the rise of these types of programs at various schools throughout the state has grown into a big enough issue that the organization is trying to balance the playing field
The NJSIAA has proposed applying a "success factor" metric to schools with academy programs and other programs or policies that open the door for students from outside a specific region to attend
these types of 'non-traditional' public schools will be moved up to a higher classification in basketball and/or football if they surpass a certain threshold of success in those sports

It might take Erika Gargano a little longer than some to get herself started in doing something
although she's not as excited about the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs
although the throws are taking a little longer to come together than many of the other events Gargano has tried in the 16 months since she embraced the sport in the winter of 2023
She even races from cross-country meets to marching band practice and competitions in the fall
and isn't satisfied with beating just one drum there − she handles the four-six drum monstrosity called the tenor drum
despite some success in the Haworth junior track program
she didn't even go out for a sport her freshman year of high school
Erika's mom had sent her out as a freshman
Gargano insisted and finally Erika went out for winter track in 2023-24
"I decided to stop being lazy and do something," Erika said with a laugh
marching band and playing piano in the Demarest Jazz Band wasn't enough and I found I liked it
It wasn't necessarily because of instant success
on the fringes of a very good varsity team
with her best a 34th-place finish at the Marine Corps Holiday Classic long jump
But her sophomore spring was a different story
She jumped 15-8¾ in the long jump and 33-0¼ in the Hasbrouck Heights Penn Relays Qualifier
She saw instant success in one of the hardest events
she was a vital part of a sectional champion team and ready to take on any challenge
"I started getting more confidence after at first I wasn't sure I'd ever make varsity," said Gargano
who didn't even make a spot at Penn Relays a year ago
"I was excited to try everything and I like being able to do whatever my team needs."
she's the top long jumper in the state and is just three inches off the state lead in the triple jump with personal bests of 40 inches in the long and five feet in the triple jump from exactly one year earlier
2 runner in cross-country as the team missed a sectional title by five points and finished in the top half of the Group 2 state race
the Norsewomen needed a high jumper and Gargano was there again
taking third in Group 2 and jumping a school-record-tying 5-4
Did we mention that she was part of the Demarest 4-x-800 team that qualified for Penn Relays and is a prime leg on the sectional champion 4-x-400 team as well
She'll let her mom say "I told you so." If mom can keep up
Accomplishment: The versatile Gargano won the Hasbrouck Heights Penn Relays Qualifier in the long and triple jumps earning entry into the former event with a state leading jump of 19-2 1/2
She won the high jump in a dual meet against archrival Old Tappan and was part of three winning relays as Demarest won its third straight Bergen County Jack Yockers B division title
Also nominated: Ciara Murray of Northern Highlands
and Kyla Berger of Glen Rock for softball; Sandra Vitolo of Ramapo and Julie Sobilo of Immaculate Heart for track and field; Alexis Toro of Westwood for lacrosse; and Natalia Poweska of Wallington for flag football
Matriarch of the Demarest family and driving force behind the beloved Demarest Farms
Elisabeth Demarest (1925–2024) leaves behind a legacy of resilience
and hard work that touched countless lives in the Pascack Valley and beyond
It took mere seconds for tributes and prayers to start pouring in after the Demarest family shared on social media that their beloved mother
had been admitted to the hospital with Covid and double pneumonia
the matriarch of the namesake family of Demarest Farms peacefully passed away at the age of 99 on Dec
“She always gave a good measure in everything she did,” said Elisabeth’s former daughter-in-law
“Whether it was blueberries or farm matters or friendship.”
While Elisabeth is known to generations of Pascack Valley residents as the driving force of the original Demarest farmstand — the old two-car garage across the street from the current farm market on Werimus Road in Hillsdale — her story is much more than that
Despite converting to become Protestant when she married Alfonse
Johanna had been born and raised Jewish and was sent to a Nazi concentration camp during World War II
as was Alfonse for refusing to divorce her
Elisabeth was 16 at the time and had gone to Germany to work in a factory
the Allied Forces came in from different directions
The Russians came into Czechoslovakia to take over,” said Elisabeth’s son
Having both survived their harrowing time spent in the camps
Alfonse decided to move his wife and family to Austria
Elisabeth was still spending time between both countries
atrocities are inflicted upon the population of that country,” said Peter
“My mom was just walking on one of the streets when she was confronted by a platoon of Russian soldiers
They had very bad intentions and I think they would’ve shot her
20-year-old Elisabeth started speaking with the officer
while Elisabeth was pregnant with their child
As his wife and soon-to-be mother of his child
can you promise me that I’ll be able to come back to see my sisters and my parents?’ Peter explained
you’ll never be able to come back and see them.’ So
she decided that she was not going to go back to Russia with him.”
Elisabeth was getting further along in her pregnancy
“My father asked for leave to be with her when she gave birth,” said Peter
He never knew whether he had a boy or girl.”
the lack of nutrition in the post-war times making it hard for Elisabeth to sustain her pregnancy
At times she had resorted to digging for wild turnips in fields just to find some nourishment
Elisabeth’s family helped look after Peter so she could work
the opportunity arose to have a new start in America
One of her sisters was already living in the U.S
and her sponsor was also willing to sponsor Elisabeth
“She was really excited when she realized that she was going to come to America,” recalled Peter
“It gave her all new hope after the war was over
as things were still really bad in Europe because there was a recession and the lasting effects of the war.”
where Elisabeth worked as a trained seamstress in a textile factory
“I didn’t know until just about a week ago when I looked it up
which in 1954 was 75 cents an hour,” Peter said
“She made $30 a week and that’s what she had to live on to take care of herself and me and share the rent money with her sister.”
From there she spent time as a cook for a wealthy Connecticut family and worked as a dental assistant in North Jersey
having gained knowledge in that field from her dentist father
a blind date led Elisabeth to marry George Demarest
The farm had been in the Demarest family since 1886
Elisabeth left her work to help run the roadside market
which at the time was run by George’s mother’s sister
and she really had good work ethic,” Peter recalled
“Anybody that worked for her was very fortunate because they learned how to work the right way and have the right work ethic
many letters have come to her from employees she had 30

1/36High School Girls Basketball: Morris Knolls vs. Demarest, N1G3 Final on March 7, 2025.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Jack McKenna | For NJ Advance MediaVanessa Russo had 31 years of history in her hands as she stepped up to the foul line
With four seconds remaining in overtime of the North Jersey Section 1
the Morris Knolls senior had an opportunity to all but clinch her team’s first sectional title since 1994 with a pair of successful free throws
as well as the raucous crowd in the gym at Northern Valley Regional High School in Demarest
A half-court heave from Demarest was off the mark as the final buzzer sounded
and the celebration was on for second-seeded Morris Knolls as it secured a 64-62 overtime victory over top-seeded Demarest on Friday
Morris Knolls' sectional final victory advances it to the Group 2 semifinals where it will clash with the North Jersey Section 2
It took 35 minutes and 56 seconds of game time for Russo’s moment in the spotlight to arrive
and she was forthright about her feelings when the opportunity for her late-game heroics emerged
the game was basically on my shoulders,” Russo said of her sectional title-winning free throws
“Every game I’ve been shooting with our coaches and that helps me take a breath
Russo’s free throws were the final two of the 126 total points scored on the night
and it was 32 minutes of back-and-forth action between Morris Knolls and Demarest that resulted in the teams being evenly matched and requiring overtime to decide a winner
The opening quarter saw both teams opt for more long-range looks on the offensive end of the floor
Demarest outscored Morris Knolls 16-12 as both teams knocked down four three-point shots
but the second quarter featured more play in the key
and more free throws for both Demarest and Morris Knolls (24-5)
A 26-26 halftime tie gave way to a near-repeat of the first quarter coming out of halftime
Demarest once again found its shooting touch from behind the arc and rode that to a 46-38 lead over Morris Knolls heading into the fourth quarter
Trailing in the latter stages of a championship game in a hostile road environment can be as daunting a situation as any for a team to overcome
but sophomore Tessa Simone detailed how Morris Knolls kept its cool
“When we take our timeouts and get the time in between quarters coach (Rob) Moore always talks to us,” Simone said following her 14-point
“Coach tells us to get out harder because we have more energy than other teams
we play with energy and that’s how we get baskets.”
Simone’s 14 points were second-best on the night for Morris Knolls behind senior Charlee Perna
who led the team with a 23-point performance
Russo’s game-winning free throws accounted for two of her nine points
and senior Denay Jones chipped in with eight points
Rob Moore has his team playing its best basketball of the season at the right time of year
The sectional title run has now featured two overtime victories
(Morris Knolls defeated Old Tappan 51-50 in overtime in the sectional quarterfinals) and Moore sees the team’s ability to pull out close games as the culmination of its work throughout the season
“All year long we’ve been building on competing
“The girls picked it up in the fourth quarter and they wanted to win for each other
That feeling has been organic with them all year and we saw what they did at the end of the game
While ending the school’s sectional championship drought is an achievement worthy of celebration
both Moore and his players acknowledged that their work is far from over and the ultimate goal of the Group 3 title will come into focus now
We’ve been saying that for the last two weeks
and we know that there’s more work to do,” Moore said
“We said at the beginning of the year that there was something different about this group of girls
Demarest concludes its season with a 23-6 record
The sectional final loss marks the end of one of
if not the strongest seasons in program history for Demarest
In addition to making its first ever sectional final
Demarest also made it to the final round of the Bergen County tournament for the first time
Group 3 tournament are additional notches in Demarest’s belt
and head coach Jenny Jurjevic sees those milestones as reflections of how her team progressed throughout the season
one of our leading scorers went down and other kids stepped up,” Jerjevic said
“We created a completely different identity and completely different basketball over the last two weeks
and I don’t think you can ask for anything better
We could have folded and caved after the Saddle River Day loss (59-47 in the Bergen County Final) and we didn’t
We continued to come back and work and we glued the team back together and that makes me really happy.”

West Virgnia-based metalcore act Curses have parted ways with drummer Tyrsson Demarest effective immediately as well as placed the band on indefinite hiatus.
Details are sparse on what forced the split which led to the hiatus, however in the band's statement they cite "an untenable situation brought about by personal conflict within the band" for being the cause.
Effective immediately, Tyrsson Demarest is no longer associated with Curses. We ask that everyone please respect our privacy regarding this matter.
That being said, due to an untenable situation brought about by personal conflict within the band, we have decided it's best to put Curses on an indefinite hiatus. We will be releasing one final song in the coming weeks.
We'd like to thank everyone for all the time spent, the moments shared, and the memories made together. It really isn't possible to fully express how much this has meant to us over the years.
We will always cherish what you've given us.

2-Morris Knolls (23-5) at 1-Demarest (23-5)
One team will make history on Friday night
Morris Knolls hasn’t won a sectional championship since 1994
while Demarest is making its first-ever appearance in a sectional final and is having its best season in school history
Morris Knolls has some magic right now and is playing with a ton of confidence as head coach Rob Moore is getting the most out of his team right now
The same can be said of Jenny Jurjevic at Demarest
who has navigated injuries to get Demarest 32 minutes away from a sectional title
Morris Knolls' win over Teaneck means there will be a new North 1
Group 3 sectional champion this season after Teaneck had won the last two sectional titles
which also made their first-ever appearance in the Bergen County Tournament final
needed double overtime to oust fifth-seeded West Essex in the sectional semifinals
Keeping your composure: Morris Knolls is going to have to deal with the road environment
and it’s never easy trying to win a championship as the road team
The Golden Eagles are going to have to keep calm and keep their composure in what should be a great setting
Morris Knolls love to amp up its press during specific periods of a contest
Demarest is going to have to stay calm with its guards and wings to try and break it
Who steps up?: Both teams have had players step up throughout the season
who has returned from injury and provided a massive lift in the quarterfinal win over Old Tappan
Senior Charlee Perna has been the Golden Eagles’ leading scorer this season and has provided on-court leadership
Demarest junior Gabriella Mittelman is coming off dropping a career-high 39 points in the semifinal win over West Essex
while sophomore Deana Finkelstein has been great down the stretch of the season
There will be a moment in the game where someone is going to have to step up
whether that’s coming up with a key rebound
making an open shot or making a clutch free throw
