(WKBW) — When talking about the most storied high school rivalries in Western New York one of the first that comes to the minds of many is Lancaster and Depew
Their high schools are less than 10 minutes apart and have delivered some of the greatest high school sports moments in all of Section VI
those moments have not been happening on the football field
which boasts a larger enrollment than its neighbor high school
has dominated the rivalry on the gridiron as they've surged to become one of the most successful football programs in the state
The larger enrollment puts Lancaster in Class AA
the largest classification of public high school football in the state of New York
Depew is Class B when it comes to football
Disparity in enrollment has not always translated to victory when it comes to this game
the Wildcats won six out of nine matchups over the Legends
Adding that period offered the largest enrollment differential since 1998
However recent results on the field and a non-foreseeable change in their total enrollment have led Depew Central School District to begin the process of phasing themselves out of this rivalry by the start of the 2027 season
When 7 Sports reached out to Depew for comment
athletic director Robert Skoczylas offered this statement on their reasoning behind trying to move away from the yearly rivalry on the gridiron:
The argument from Lancaster's side gears more towards not wanting to see the annual tradition that united both communities go away
In the same press release mentioned earlier
Andrew Kufel made it very clear where they stand on this issue
You can read more on Lancaster's stance here
It looks as if Lancaster remains steadfast in keeping this rivalry on the football field going for many more years to come and Depew is ready to shift their football program and its schedule to create new memories with a more "equitable" level of competition
Both schools will host one more home game each over the next two years before this rivalry comes to an end by the start of the 2027 season unless both sides agree to keep the yearly game going
What do you think of this decision and the possible elimination of the storied Lancaster vs

Eight months after the Depew Board of Education quietly and without explanation rescinded the appointment of the district’s next superintendent two days before he was to start
A unexpected twist with the top leadership role in the Depew School District has confused parents over the last month
District officials have so far been mum on what caused the change
Katie Smith, who currently serves as the director of human resources for North Tonawanda City Schools, will be the next superintendent of the Depew Union-Free School District. Her three-year contract will begin July 1, according to a news release posted to the district’s website
The Depew Board of Education on Thursday unanimously voted to appoint Smith to the superintendent position
As she’s gotten to know the Depew district and community over the six-month selection process
Smith said at the School Board meeting that a few things have stood out to her including the district’s “absolute unwavering commitment to empowering students to be leaders as well as serve the community.”
She also has observed “an intense dedication to creating inspiring and challenging learning environments and opportunities for all students.”
“I can’t wait to continue my journey learning more about this community,” Smith said
I look forward to meeting with our students
as well as community members at large to continue to soak in as much as I possibly can
to grow as a member of this community and then to begin contributing and collaborating with all of you so that we can continue to build on the strong foundation that’s already here and exists.”
Katie Smith will be the next superintendent of the Depew Union-Free School District starting on July 1
who stepped in as interim superintendent in August
after the board rescinded the job offer to Michael Lauria
Rabey held the position of superintendent at Depew for 12 years before he retired
Smith will be the district’s first full-time leader since former Superintendent Henry Stopinski retired at the end of 2023
Douglas Whelan was the interim superintendent and was set to be replaced by Lauria
Smith brings with her experience as a principal and assistant principal
She also worked as an elementary school teacher and a data coach for the Lancaster Central School District
She has a master’s degree in educational leadership from Niagara University and a master’s degree in literacy from SUNY Buffalo State University. She has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Canisius University and completed the yearlong Future Superintendents Academy training program

ANGOLA — “We deserve this moment.”
Fredonia captain Elizabeth Morris was not afraid to speak frankly about the respect her team has earned this season
Morris first referenced how hard Fredonia has worked in recent years to climb from near the bottom of Section VI to a sectional championship
the most successful Fredonia volleyball season in nearly four decades added another accomplishment
but the ‘Billies belonged in the spotlight
Any doubt of that was silenced as Fredonia took all three sets against the Depew Wildcats
to win the Class B crossover girls volleyball match on Friday night at Lake Shore High School
I don’t have the words to say how amazing this moment is
This just shows with consistent persistence and hard work that it will pay off
You will achieve your goals,” Fredonia head coach Amanda Krakowiak said
Fredonia reached Friday’s crossover game by beating the defending Section VI champions
The win earned Fredonia its first sectional title in 38 years
But there was one more win left for the ‘Billies to earn in order to claim the overall crown in Section VI
and from the way the contest began on Friday
The ‘Billies led 20-16 after an ace from Londyn Wilmot
but the Wildcats responded by cutting the deficit to just a point
Fredonia started to pull away again with Elizabeth Morris serving
It was then that Fredonia called a timeout
just a point away from an opening set victory
As the ball was tipped gently over the net and it fell to the floor
Fredonia came away with the point and celebrated as any team that had not reached this stage in decades would
with multiple players embracing each other with hugs as they jumped around in joy
But rather than letting that celebration be enough
Fredonia lived up its victories all throughout the night
including a big celebration after each set
The first set celebration was just a warmup for what was to come
Fredonia rode the momentum of its opening-set victory to a huge lead to start the second set
The barrage to open the second set included a pair of blocks from Wilmot and a violent spike from Lydia LaBarr
Fredonia held onto its lead from that point and led comfortably throughout the entire second set
“There are going to be ups and downs in volleyball
but the second you can get that momentum to shift back in your favor
“You want to try to maintain that as long as possible.”
The third set began much like the first set did
as the first 10 points were split evenly at five apiece
a Fredonia timeout let the ‘Billies regroup to draw even at 10-all
Rather than giving the opponent a chance to take the third set like Fredonia did two nights prior in the Class B2 final against reigning champion Southwestern
Fredonia grew into the moment on Friday and pushed forward
An aggressive Fredonia attack captured 10 of the next 12 points to take a commanding lead
The final point came uneventfully as Fredonia looked over at the officials for a ruling
While the delayed reaction left Fredonia waiting a few extra seconds to storm the court
the ‘Billies more than made up for the moment with a celebration of a lifetime
“It’s so humbling to see what kind of support we have at this point in the playoffs
My girls and I are so thankful and appreciative of everything our fans do to support us,” Krakowiak said
“To keep winning with this group and connecting with this group
I’m so happy to play with them,” Fredonia senior co-captain Maddie Saunders said
Teammates hugged each other and danced as their classmates and fans stormed the court to celebrate the culmination of Fredonia’s rise to prominence in Section VI
They’ve experienced tough seasons and they didn’t give up
They are creating the success for themselves,” Krakowiak said
It just warms my heart that they have taken all the little bits of advice
They have put in the time and the effort to be persistent and relentless.”
Saunders accounted for all but one of the assists as the offense ran through her ability to set up her teammates
a skill she has refined through playing every position on the floor in her four seasons as a varsity volleyball athlete
Saunders and Wilmot tied for the team lead with three aces apiece
“We really tried to be very aggressive,” Krakowiak said
“… That’s what helped us be successful.”
Wilmot also accounted for four of the team’s six blocks on the night
Fredonia now advances to a regional qualifier for the state playoffs on Wednesday at 6 p.m
The winner of that contest will travel to Section IV to determine who will advance to the state championships in Glens Falls Nov
“We play very competitive teams in our league and even outside our league
I try hard to go find competitive tournaments
All of those things are in preparation for playoffs,” Krakowiak said
“If you’re not planning and trying to prepare for that
Fredonia has now reached the pinnacle of Section VI
they find out if that climb will continue even higher
They are so important during the game and after the game,” Saunders said
“They are memories I’ll keep forever.”
