The Dutch star viciously stopped wrestling legend Bo Nickal in the co-main event of UFC Des Moines, before naming Strickland as his next planned victim
it was the phrasing that De Ridder used that seemed to make fans laugh
The former ONE Championship double champion gave an assured and hilarious post-fight interview to Michael Bisping
he claimed that Strickland was America’s ‘best striker’ and called for the fight after landing a major scalp of Nickal
Following his victory on Saturday night, Reinier De Ridder was quick to call his shot on the microphone in front of a raucous Iowa crowd
he noted that he had defeated America’s top wrestler
meaning that he needed to now take on the best striker the nation had to offer
“I tried them knees and they’re still working,” he joked with Bisping
“I was a bit surprised because I noticed during the fight that he was fading a little bit and I thought that it was the knees so I said I should throw the knee and the hook
try to get him again and then he was kind of out of there already
“I wanted to say this is the best American wrestler you have
That description of Strickland tickled a few UFC fans
who would rank him far from the top spot in terms of pure striking from an American
“If Strickland is the best striker U.S has to give we got problems.”
The fight itself between De Ridder and Nickal was an interesting affair as the wrestling star
was trepidatious about grappling with a renowned BJJ expert
before he eventually did get the Dutchman down and even looked for a submission after some ground and pound
he couldn’t get that finish and ended up being reversed and ending the round back on his feet
De Ridder did a solid job of working his Thai boxing
which eventually got him in position to land big knees
With Nickal continuing to put himself against the cage
De Ridder attempted to land a knee up the middle
the Dutchman landed another knee up the middle
this time landing flush to the body of Nickal
sinking him to the ground and finishing the fight

Dutch middleweight Reinier de Ridder is only two fights into his UFC career
and hopes a big win over undefeated prospect Bo Nickal at UFC Des Moines will set him up for even bigger things later this year
De Ridder captured championships in Asian organization ONE Championship at 225 and 205 pounds
but is now making waves in the UFC’s 185-pound class
It’s a move that has already paid dividends
with back-to-back submission victories over Gerald Meerschaert and Kevin Holland getting his UFC career off to a flying start and sending him into Saturday’s co-main event bout with Nickal already ranked 13th in the division

Nickal doesn’t have the MMA experience de Ridder possesses

“He’s knocked it out the park every time,” he said
“The Paul Craig fight wasn't that exciting

The UFC middleweight division has traditionally been dominated by strikers
but the rise of a new breed of fighters who are equally capable of finishing fights on the ground offers encouragement for de Ridder
the big one now is Khamzat [Chimaev] versus Dricus [Du Plessis]
A bit of a grappler versus striker matchup
and there's a few guys underneath there that are pretty good everywhere,” he explained.
“Caio [Borralho] is pretty good at striking and grappling
[Nassourdine] Imavov is a good striker and a good grappler
de Ridder said he’d actually love to test himself against two of the division’s top strikers
as he revealed that matchups with a pair of former 185-pound champions are on his 2025 wishlist

I got a couple of dream fights up there,” he grinned
One of those would be great as the next fight.”
Before he can call for fights against former champions
de Ridder needs to continue boosting his own stock in the crowded UFC middleweight division
starting with a victory over Nickal on Saturday night
Nickal’s wrestling credentials are well documented
but de Ridder said he’s been impressed with how the American has worked on rounding out his skill set
The latest example of that came in Nickal’s unanimous decision victory over Paul Craig at UFC 309
where he opted to stand and strike from distance as he kept well clear of the Scottish submission specialist’s dangerous ground game
That performance might offer a glimpse into how Nickal could approach things against another grappler in de Ridder
but the Dutchman isn’t convinced that we’ll see a repeat of that showing this weekend
I think it's up to me in this one,” he said
“It seems like he was pretty content with this last performance
“You saw he was winning in the striking department – he was outstriking him every round
This fight will look nothing like that last fight of his.”
De Ridder sees his path to victory coming via his grappling
but said that his mat skills alone won’t be enough to win it
He’ll need to make his mark with his strikes first
“I need to put the pressure on him,” he stated
“I’ve been working on a lot of different chokes
but what I see is me hurting him a couple times
but while the breakdown of his approach reflects his confidence in his abilities
it’s also an indication that he’s relaxed and and content with where he is at this stage of his career

(KPLC) - Among the items on the ballot for DeRidder residents in the upcoming election is a new mayor
After the resignation and arrest of former mayor Misty Roberts Clanton
voters must now decide who will be the next leader of their city
Four candidates are running to take that seat
Prior to taking on the role of acting mayor
Randy Larken served on the DeRidder City Council
Mike Harper is the president of the Beauregard Parish Police Jury
He has served as chairman of the board for the Regional Planning Commission for the DeRidder area
His love for his hometown led him to throw his hat in the ring
Danny Reynolds is a veteran who once served as Deridder Public Works director
We caught up with all four candidates to learn more about why they’re running for mayor
Below you’ll find some key questions we asked each candidate
I started out as getting put in as acting mayor and had no intention
As I’ve been in there people are encouraging me to run
and I want to make a difference in our community.”
Harper: “I believe I can improve communications across the parish and the city and include the town of Merryville
So that we can all be moving forward together and looking out for each other’s interests
so that it’s not so expensive to make benefit for everyone.”
Harris: “I’m running for mayor because this is my city
I learned a lot of qualities in my military career
I have a master’s degree and a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern
It pretty much saved my life when I was 16 years old
I’ve been involved with the city for a long time
I’ve been investing here for years in my own businesses
We’re standing next to one of the buildings that I own downtown
I love the opportunities that it’s given me
I have a little experience inside the city
I was a public works director for a couple of years
I was elected in 2022 as a councilman at large
so I know the legislative side of it as well
Larken: “First thing is getting into the budget; end of the fiscal year comes in September
So we have to start getting ready for that
not depending totally on grants from state
There’s not a lot you can do because the budgets already in place but start getting ready for the next fiscal year.”
Harper: “One of the things that I’ve worked on is family support jobs
so they can give the children what they need
and infrastructure that we need to continue growth.”
I think our city’s going through a lot of things right now
I think there’s a lot of a lot of things that need to be done
just little things that we’ve kind of gotten use to over the years
The second thing that I want to do is go reestablish communication and relationships with our local businesses and industries
and I also want them to know that they can call and talk to me anytime they want
also should be transparent about they’re asking
We have city council meetings every single month
that’s where you find out what’s going on with the city or directly call the office
come meet with any of our department heads
Harper: “I’ve proposed that we lay out a five-year plan
we can actually let them see the plan and perhaps propose changes.”
Harris: “I’m the only candidate that requested the secretary of state’s office to oversight over this election
just to make sure all the candidates have an equal opportunity to run the race with integrity
The other way I would use transparency for our office here
will have a budget and projects that’s going on inside their neighborhoods
when a citizen walks in to pay their water bill
and the people will actually have an opportunity to see that.”
They can come and see me and talk to me anytime they want
That’s the easiest way I know how to do it
People are welcome to join us on the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month
It’s not been easy I’m learning a lot every day
It’s going to be the same way with anyone else
but we are limited in certain areas on what and how fast we can do
I think every candidate does; we all want what’s best for the city
The fact that I’ve been there for 7 months
and I’ve served on the city council for 7 years as well.”
I probably have the most experience in local government
I’ve been on the regional planning commission
I’ve worked closely with our alliance for economic development
mainly because I’m the candidate that has gone through more than any other candidate to be standing here
and I took a unit over to Iraq in a combat environment
I brought mothers and daughters and sons and brothers home that I took over there
I’ll go further than that and say I love people
4 or 5 calls of things probably most mayors would not take the phone call
but I’m here for the community and people first leadership.”
Harper: “I believe I’m the one candidate that talks about bringing everyone together
and I believe that I’m uniquely qualified to do that.”
Harris: “They should cast their ballot for me because right now our city is going through a lot
If we keep the same people in those positions and expect a different result
and I know without a doubt that this city is great
Just have to have a great leader to lead it.”
I think I have a proven history of work ethic
I’m going to work just as hard for my family to come back to this town as I will for everybody else to come back
7 News received documents detailing Federal Tax Liens against Larken
and he says he doesn’t feel as though his personal finances will impact his ability to lead the city as mayor
“I do not feel this question has anything to do with my ability to lead
I did have some problems in my personal life
since I’ve been asked and I’ve been put on the spot numerous times from someone that put it on Facebook in a fake name
Those things have been worked out and or still working out
but I do not feel that is something I have to put out there
if they’d like to put their personal business out for me
I’d be happy to discuss it with them,” Larken said
After he delivered a left strike that staggered Bo Nickal backwards
UFC middleweight Reinier de Ridder (20-2) surged forward with a left knee to his opponent’s abdomen
Nickal (7-1) collapsed near the cage before the referee called the fight in round two in favor of the Netherlands-born fighter
de Ridder stood upward then blew kisses to a few upset fans in the crowd before he formed a heart-shaped motion to cap off his post-fight celebration at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on May 3
a four-time Penn State wrestling All-American
the first loss of his mixed martial arts career
He did it with a collection of body shots throughout the fight
“I felt like every time I hit him to the body
I felt him dropping his hands a little bit
I felt him moving to his right like he was hurt a little bit,” de Ridder said
I stepped back in; he hit me with a one-two (punch)
'that’s not smart' and then I hit him again to the body
and I got him out of there and I felt he was on his way out already.”
de Ridder’s walkout carried a roar of boos more than his octagon counterpart like a soldier entering enemy territory
the TKO finish unleashed a high-pitched roar of applause
It was de Ridder’s third-straight win in the UFC over the last six months
bruises and a noticeable grin as he took his seat inside the media interview room in the depths of Wells Fargo Arena
“It wasn’t too bad right?” de Ridder said with a smirk post-fight
The result offered a bit of jubilation and a victory over a rising prospect in Nickal
the win was a stepping stone to a bigger opportunity against a top-ten fighter in the middleweight division
He called for a fight against former UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland
Let’s do the best American striker,” de Ridder said
he’s a real character … and I think he’s an interesting matchup style-wise
He has a very good jab; I don’t think my jab is too bad
he'd fight the following week if it meant that he'd climb the middleweight division at a faster rate
he's enjoying the fruits of his labor focused on a higher-stakes showdown

(KPLC) - A DeRidder man is dead after being struck by a train in downtown DeRidder Thursday evening
According to DeRidder Police Deputy Chief Darren Hall
a southbound train hit Raymond Mark Leidig
who was struck while walking across the tracks to meet a vehicle that was waiting for him
Investigators say Leidig had just left the police department on Washington Street
the train was stalled for hours in downtown DeRidder
all roadways were reopened around 8:30 p.m
de Ridder actually initiated the clinch several times and even scored a slick reversal in the first round where he ended up on top of Nickal looking for submissions
He continuously trapped Nickal in similar positions in the second round until de Ridder saw an opening to really start punishing the body with a series of knees
For all the ways Nickal was touted as a future champion with arguably the best wrestling in the sport
de Ridder never feared testing that part of his game in their fight and it obviously paid off
“He is maybe [a god of wrestling] but I think this goes for anything in life
what you do well,” de Ridder said at the UFC Des Moines post-fight press conference
“Don’t be distracted by what anybody else brings to the table
While he hasn’t watched the fight back yet
de Ridder had a pretty good idea how he turned the tables by first showing off his grappling skills but then surprising Nickal with his striking acumen
Nickal was already looking labored in his movement and that speaks directly to the continued punishment that de Ridder was dishing out on the feet
right?” de Ridder said about his performance
get his hips away a little bit with the whizzer then I got him with the knee in the first round
I ended up on top but I was surprised with how well he did on bottom
I wasn’t able to posture right away because he moved pretty well
I was looking for the side choke at a moment but it wasn’t there
“I haven’t really seen the finishing sequence but I think I threw the right hook
hit him coming in and every time I hit him to the body
I felt him moving to his right like he was hurt a little bit
he hit me with a 1-2 and I was like that’s not smart
and then I got him out of there because I felt like he was on his way out already.”
While he’s earned his reputation in the sport for his suffocating submission skills
de Ridder is quick to point out that he comes from the Netherlands — a country famous for producing some of the nastiest strikers in the history of combat sports
As far as what comes next, de Ridder called his shot from the octagon when he asked for a fight against former UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland, who hasn’t made an appearance since losing a rematch to Dricus du Plessis in early 2024
Without an opponent or a date for his return booked
Strickland is totally available and de Ridder loves the idea of adding that name to his resume
even if it means absorbing a little bit of verbal abuse along the way
“I think I might be regretting it in a little bit,” de Ridder joked about Strickland’s notorious trash talk towards his opponents
I think it’s an interesting matchup style wise

Suggestions or feedback?
he had a medical emergency that nearly cost him his life
The terrifying experience gave him a close-up look at medical care and made him eager to learn more
“You can’t always pinpoint exactly what gets you interested in something
but that was a transformative moment,” says DeRidder
he grabbed the chance to participate in a medicine-focused program
spending about half of his days during his senior year in high school learning about medical science and shadowing doctors
He became fascinated by the technologies that make treatments possible and was particularly interested in how drugs are delivered to the brain
a curiosity that sparked a lifelong passion
that problem still fascinates me,” he says
“That’s what eventually got me into the drug delivery field.”
DeRidder’s interests led him to transfer half-way through his undergraduate studies to Johns Hopkins University
where he performed research he had proposed in a Goldwater Scholarship proposal
The research focused on the development of a nanoparticle-drug conjugate to deliver a drug to brain cells in order to transform them from a pro-inflammatory to an anti-inflammatory phenotype
Such a technology could be valuable in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases
DeRidder entered the joint Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program
where he has embarked on a somewhat different type of drug delivery project — developing a device that measures the concentration of a chemotherapy drug in the blood while it is being administered and adjusts the infusion rate so the concentration is optimal for the patient
or Closed-Loop AUtomated Drug Infusion RegulAtor
and can allow for the personalization of drug dosing for a variety of different drugs
The project stemmed from discussions with his faculty advisors — Robert Langer
the Karl Van Tassel Career Development Professor and a gastroenterologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital
They explained to him that chemotherapy dosing is based on a formula developed in 1916 that estimates a patient’s body surface area
The formula doesn’t consider important influences such as differences in body composition and metabolism
or circadian fluctuations that can affect how a drug interacts with a patient
“Once my advisors presented the reality of how chemotherapies are dosed,” DeRidder says
He and his advisors agreed this was a great project for his PhD
we began to brainstorm ways that we could develop a medical device to improve the lives of patients” DeRidder says
“I love starting with a blank piece of paper and then brainstorming to work out the best solution.”
DeRidder’s research process involved MATLAB and Simulink
developed by the mathematical computer software company MathWorks
“MathWorks and Simulink are key to what we do,” DeRidder says
“They enable us to model the drug pharmacokinetics — how the body distributes and metabolizes the drug
We also model the components of our system with their software
That was especially critical for us in the very early days
because it let us know whether it was even possible to control the concentration of the drug
we’ve continuously improved the control algorithm
You simulate hundreds of different experiments before performing any experiments in the lab.”
With his innovative use of the MATLAB and Simulink tools
DeRidder was awarded MathWorks fellowships both last year and this year
He has also received a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship
“The fellowships have been critical to our development of the CLAUDIA drug-delivery system,” DeRidder says
adding that he has “had the pleasure of working with a great team of students and researchers in the lab.”
He says he would like to move CLAUDIA toward clinical use
where he thinks it could have significant impact
a step he and his advisors are already working on via the Bridge Project
a collaboration between the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT and the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center
“Whatever I can do to help push it toward the clinic
including potentially helping to start a company to help commercialize the system
DeRidder is working on developing new nanoparticles to deliver therapeutic nucleic acids
The project involves synthesizing new nucleic acid molecules
as well as developing the new polymeric and lipid nanoparticles to deliver the nucleic acids to targeted tissue and cells
DeRidder says he likes working on technologies at different scales
from medical devices to molecules — all with the potential to improve the practice of medicine
he finds time in his busy schedule to do community service
he has spent time helping the homeless on Boston streets
simple ways that we can serve our communities when we’re doing research,” DeRidder says
“which is why I have often sought out ways to serve people I come across every day
or helping out the stranger you meet in the store who is having a bad day.”
he’ll head back to work that also recalls his early exposure to the medical field in high school
where he interacted with a lot of people with different types of dementia and other neurological diseases at a local nursing home
“My long-term plan includes working on developing devices and molecular therapies to treat neurological diseases
in addition to continuing to work on cancer,” he says
I’d say that early experience had a big impact on me.”

This Saturday at UFC Des Moines, Bo Nickal was once again hopeful of proving he is more than just a wrestler when he took on Reinier De Ridder
Ahead of their clash, Nickal worried fans with updates regarding his weight just a week out from the fight
claiming that he was going to be cutting a substantial amount of weight
Fortunately, though, the decorated college wrestler made weight this past Friday
and the two middleweights threw down in Des Moines
The fight began with De Ridder looking to put on forward pressure by putting the undefeated Nickal on the back foot
Nickal did well to reverse the position early on and control the Dutch fighter against the cage
the dominant wrestler scored his first takedown of the fight and began reigning down some heavy ground-and-pound on De Ridder
He then attempted to latch onto a guillotine choke but De Ridder did a good job of reversing the attempt and ending up on top of Nickal
the two ended up back to their feet where De Ridder finished the round landing a few strikes on Nickal
De Ridder attempted to put forward pressure on Nickal by getting him up against the cage and locked into a body lock

(KALB) - Michael Harris has described himself as a son of DeRidder
He said the city raised him and believes he is the right man to lead the city forward
“I just believe that I’m the guy for the job.”
Harris expanded on how he would restore integrity to DeRidder if elected as its next mayor
“The people have to know what the budget is
they don’t have a problem paying the bills
Harris said he will conduct a thorough study of the city’s budget
using the red-yellow-green method to determine where funds should be allocated
Yellow is for areas that can wait a little longer
and green is for areas we’ve just worked on
“We’ll continue doing this until we cover the whole city.”
Harris emphasized that he does not want to add another tax on residents
he plans to work with the talented people of DeRidder to help the city grow
come up with a reasonable answer together and move forward together
I just think it takes people with good intentions
When asked what separates him from his fellow candidates
I think I have the highest degree,” Harris said
Harris also highlighted his experience as an active-duty commander in the military
which he said would help him lead DeRidder in a new direction
“While I was there, I had over 11 MRAPs under my control
That means I had over $5.5 million just with the MRAPs under my immediate control
along with the health and welfare of 274 soldiers in a combat environment
I think we’ll be okay in the City of DeRidder,” Harris said
Harris shared his final push to the voters of DeRidder
“You complained about how bad this place is
We have to do something different to get a different result
I’m not saying that I’m the best person in this city
but I am saying that I’m the most qualified candidate for this job
I need you to think: who do you believe can handle the responsibilities of this city with integrity
currently one of DeRidder’s two Councilmen-at-Large
said he is deeply committed to the city that has shaped him
Reynolds recalled a time when he was struggling to figure out who he was and who he would become
he said he is determined to give back to the community that he said helped him grow
“I’ve got a passion for this place like nobody’s ever seen,” Reynolds said
“I’m just ready to help us move forward with some economic development and some community involvement
and just make this a better place aesthetically
has spent years improving both residential and commercial properties in DeRidder
One of his proudest achievements has been his work to remodel vacant historic buildings in downtown DeRidder into retail spaces
He said he plans to bring this same passion for revitalization to the mayor’s office
“There are so many things that need to be done here that people just drive past every day
and when they start seeing those things change
and we’re going to be proud of where we live.”
Reynolds said he wants to rebuild the relationship between the city government and the community
He believes trust is crucial for DeRidder’s future and wants to restore the integrity of City Hall
The people need to trust who’s leading them
The people need to trust who’s making the decisions up in the administrative office of City Hall
and they need to be comfortable with who that person is,” Reynolds said
“I am going to establish my own integrity for myself and my administration
and I think it’s going to be something that these people are going to appreciate very much.”
Reynolds said his message to voters is clear:
and I just can’t wait to get started,” Reynolds said
*** HIGHLIGHTS! Watch de Ridder Derail Nickal With Liver Kill Shot!!! ***
Bo Nickal vs. Reinier de Ridder squared off in a Middleweight contest earlier tonight (Sat., May 3, 2025) at UFC Des Moines from Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines
de Ridder stopped his opponent with a knee to the liver
firing punches and trying to time a big knee
It didn’t take long for Nickal to wrap up a clinch
where the duo traded takedown attempts and body punches
“RDR” was the more active and effective clinch striker in the first half of the round
but Nickal grounded him with an ankle pick
When de Ridder tried to scramble to his feet
Nickal jumped on a guillotine but ended up on his back
Nickal actually did well to avoid submissions and major damage
escaping to his feet with just a few seconds remaining in the first
it was the first lost round of Nickal’s young MMA career
“The Dutch Knight” continued to press hard into the second
landing a few shots before the duo landed back in the clinch
De Ridder continued to land solid knees to the body
which seemed to be taking an effect on Nickal’s gas tank
Nickal was looking downright uncomfortable on his feet
He fired back a couple shots in desperation
but de Ridder surged forward with a massive knee to the stomach that crumpled Nickal along the fence
De Ridder came into this fight with a dedicated game plan of beating the crap out of Nickal in the clinch
spending far more of their shared clinch time landing chipping shots that broke down the wrestler
De Ridder has really leveled up since his UFC debut
and this is clearly the most signature win of his career
he still has all the credentials in the world
but the young standout has a lot left to learn about cage fighting

(KALB) - As the search for a new mayor continues
DeRidder residents face a crucial decision
Acting Mayor Randy Larken is making his case to voters as to why he should lead DeRidder into the future
Randy Larken was sworn in as interim mayor of DeRidder after the resignation of former Mayor Misty Roberts Clanton
Mayor Larken said the residents of DeRidder must put that dark chapter behind them
If we’re looking back we’re not looking forward and if we’re looking back we’re going to stumble.”
He said he wants to restore integrity at City Hall and that his track record as a public servant speaks for itself
“My cell phone has been public for 25 years and...I take every call and I encourage everyone to come speak to me
“I’ll be happy to sit down with them at any time.”
Mayor Larken said the most common concerns he has heard from DeRidder residents include the city’s roads
how does he plan to tackle these challenges
Work on getting out there and getting as many available grants as we can.”
The interim mayor said his handling of DeRidder’s budget is one of his biggest accomplishment since stepping into office
is in very little debt,” said Mayor Larken
“We paid off one and a half million dollars in the last few months of our debt still left over from Hurricane Laura.”
Larken also spoke his decision to run for mayor after previously telling constituents he would not during the special election
I’ve been asked since I’ve been on the city council
It was not something I thought I would like to do but I like the job because I like people and I like to lead,” remarked Larken
I like to bring everybody together for a community
And I love a challenge and it has been the biggest challenge of my life.”
Mayor Larken shared these final thoughts to the voters of DeRidder:
“I am your acting mayor and if I’m elected again as your acting mayor
I will be honest and I will be here for you and everything about you matters.”

four fighters picked up an extra $50,000 for their performances in Des Moines
Quang Le def. Gaston Bolanos via technical submission (rear-naked choke) – 1:54, Round 1
Quang Le's (9-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) first octagon victory was an impressive one as he became the first to submit Gaston Bolanos (8-5 MMA, 2-2 UFC) by choking the Bellator veteran unconscious in the second round of their bantamweight bout on the prelims
Azamat Bekoev def. Ryan Loder via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 2:44
After pleading for the UFC to sign him, Azamat Bekoev (20-3 MMA, 2-0 UFC) is proving he belongs. His second octagon appearance saw him score a second consecutive first-round knockout when he floored "The Ultimate Fighter" winner Ryan Loder (7-2 MMA
1-1 UFC) less than three minutes into the opening round of their middleweight bout
Performance of the Night: Reinier de RidderReinier de Ridder def. Bo Nickal via TKO (strikes) – Round 2, 1:53
Reinier de Ridder (20-2 MMA, 3-0 UFC) pulled off the stunner of the night when he lit up highly touted middleweight prospect Bo Nickal (7-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC). The former two-division ONE Championship titleholder worked the body before a final knee sent Nickal crumpling to the mat for the TKO
giving him his first octagon bonus in an upset
Cory Sandhagen def. Deiveson Figueiredo via TKO (injury) – Round 2, 4:08
Cory Sandhagen (18-5 MMA, 11-4 UFC) delivered a ruthless destruction of Deiveson Figueiredo (24-5-1 MMA, 13-5-1 UFC) in the bantamweight main event, battering the former flyweight champion in the first, then tangling his leg for an injury TKO finish in the second
Sandhagen becomes the ninth bantamweight to be awarded five or more fight-night bonuses
he’s not looking all that exceptional anymore
Perhaps expectations were unreasonably high
Conversely, de Ridder has a ton more experience as a former ONE double champ. Since defecting to UFC, “The Dutch Knight” has won two bouts via submission to establish himself as a legitimate force at 185 pounds
but he could really grow his star with a win here
Let’s take a closer look at the betting odds and strategic keys for each athlete:
Nickal — the world class wrestler — is faced with an expert jiu-jitsu player
he opted to stand-and-trade with Paul Craig rather than risk getting tapped out
Nickal is likely going to have to wrestle to avoid taking big shots
His left hand should be enough to at least keep de Ridder honest and help him set up his own takedowns
The simple fact of modern mixed martial arts (MMA) is that it’s not that hard to avoid submissions from top position
If Nickal sets up his initial shot carefully
then he should be able to navigate the waters of de Ridder’s guard
It’s a simple matter of maintaining posture and following the hips
which should be a manageable task for the blue-chip prospect
“RDR” is certainly a fun fighter if nothing else
He’s an aggressive and lanky striker with little mind for defense
His transitions and submission skills are excellent
as he’s secured 13 of his previous fights via tapout
tit-for-tat striking match against a younger athlete
He also doesn’t want to be stuck in full guard for an extended period of time beneath a world-class wrestler
which means he can take advantage of Nickal’s inexperience
The best way to do so is put him on his back foot and put numbers in his face
and that’s exactly the situation that could see him dive into a strangle
but at least the lanky Dutchman is comfortable throwing down
It’s easy to envision an aggressive de Ridder stunning Nickal and catching him with a quick guillotine
I just don’t think I can do it! Nickal is five years younger and wildly more athletic. He trains with one of the best camps in the world. It should take a bonafide Top 10 Middleweight to stop the Nickal train even at this stage of the game
and I’m unconvinced that de Ridder is that guy
faces off against former Flyweight champion
promising an intense battle in the 185-pound division
