18 Destrehan was locked in an intense Division I non-select opening round playoff series at No
15 Central-Baton Rouge that went the distance
but in the end the Wildcats saw their season come to an end as Central earned a 4-0 win in the third and deciding game
Dylan Varner pitched a complete game shutout to earn the win
allowing five hits on the day and keeping Destrehan (22-14) from finding its offensive footing
Chase Mire took the loss on the mound for Destrehan
allowing three runs on four hits in 3.2 innings
Benjamin LaPlace led Destrehan offensively
“It was a good high school baseball playoff series … it came down to who could get the timely hit
which was the deciding factor in all three games,” said Destrehan head coach Chris Mire
“Each one came down to one or two at-bats.”
He said that the Wildcats just couldn’t seem to find an opening in the defense
“It was a game we didn’t strike out at all – it just seemed like every ball we hit was in the wrong place,” Mire said
“Chase Marcotte started the game with a really hard hit ball
puts a ball in the gap and they ran it down
we were close a few times … we get the first two out in the fourth
they get a single and then just get it by our third baseman for a double
We just never could get a ball to drop when we needed to
scoring two in the first inning on RBIs by Jesse Lord and Parker Simcoe
It added runs in the fifth and sixth innings
while Destrehan fired back with a 3-1 victory in game two
That Destrehan victory saw Josh Muller go 4.1 innings to earn the win on the mound
He allowed one run (none earned) on four hits
Jack Conravey pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief
“Game two is typically the big one,” said Mire
“So we tried to save the guys who were our two strongest down the stretch
Josh came out and very much was in control of his emotions
a guy who’s able to stay calm and throw strikes and that really allowed us to settle into the game
“It was the one game I thought our offense had some opportunities to play our style of baseball
We were able to put some bunts down and apply some pressure
And that started with the fact Josh and Jack did a great job on the mound
Conravey also had a quality day at the plate
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the second when LaPlace got Destrehan started with a leadoff single
Conravey put some pressure on the defense with a bunt
resulting in an error and setting the table for Will Muller
Frank Harding followed up in the game’s next at-bat
driving in Conravey to push the score to 2-0
Central scored on an error in the top of the third to make it 2-1
where the score remained until the seventh inning
Chase Mire singled to lead off and LaPlace sacrificed him to second with a bunt
who doubled in an insurance run for Destrehan
Central broke open the first game of the series with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning
The series brought to an end a Destrehan season that saw the Wildcats put together stretches of very strong ball – beginning the season 10-1 and also posting an eight-game win streak near the end of the season
after that last game … we obviously wanted to go deep in the playoffs
but you could tell there was a sense of pride with this team,” said Chris Mire
“The things that we talked about doing at the beginning of the year – staying together
and I really felt like this team did that.”
In Destrehan’s roughest stretch of the season – one that saw the Wildcats drop seven of eight games – the Wildcats indeed stayed glued together
and they made the choice to not let that happen,” Mire said
I’m extremely proud of how they stuck together
you’re going to remember how your teammates fought alongside you and how you compete as a group.”

The final game of Hahnville’s baseball season, a 7-6 loss in extra innings of game two of its best of three opening round series at Ruston, did not deliver the Tigers’ desired result. […]
For Will Reinagel and Cooper Matherne, that was the goal, and it was the destination. […]
About 20 minutes after Hahnville’s 10-3 loss to Destrehan in the first of two rivalry matchups last week
Tigers’ head coach Jared Vial and his staff heard a loud and clear message from standout sophomore Koa Romero
“He said he wanted the ball on Thursday,” Vial said
pitching a complete game shutout to help lift Hahnville to a 4-0 victory at Destrehan
allowing just three hits and walking one while striking out eight to earn the win
Romero said he wasn’t sure how deep into the game he’d pitch
“After our first game – we didn’t play well
and I wanted to get off to a good start this game,” Romero said
“My arm felt great the whole time and I just stuck with my strengths – tried to get ahead with the fastball and work from there.”
Destrehan head coach Chris Mire said the Wildcats expected Romero to start – and expected him to present a large challenge
“He’s a great competitor and a great player,” Mire said
We had a feeling he’d throw today … he’s going to take losing personally
He attacked us and he had good life on his fastball early in the game
finding a way to get his team one more out – and eventually
Spencer Srubar took the loss for Destrehan (21-12)
allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and striking out four
Hahnville (19-12) led from the very first pitch – thanks to Brayden Fontenot
The Tigers’ leadoff batter stepped into the box and blasted the ball out the park to put his team ahead 1-0
all year he’s been exactly what we need him to be — a leader,” said Vial
just because of the fact that he puts in the work
I expected a first pitch fastball,” said Fontenot
produced and we get to take home the win.”
Landen Teague doubled him home to make it 2-0
Romero struck out all three batters he faced in the bottom of the first inning
Hahnville added a third run on a Guarisco RBI single in the second inning
That 3-0 score held until Romero plated one final run in the seventh inning with his own RBI single
Bennett Naquin and Kaden Bran each scored runs for Hahnville
Mire said the beginning of the game brought a bit of deja vu – Shane Lee led off a 2024 game between the teams at Hahnville with a home run blast in the game’s first at bat
Mire said Destrehan needed to refocus quickly
with a chance to earn home field advantage for round one of the playoffs still in the cards
was pleased with how his team responded to a tough loss just two days earlier at home
“We went in maybe a little too confident after the last two years and then that kind of kicked us back to reality,” Vial said

his younger sister Kinsley wasn’t far behind
when the two had the chance to compete on the mat side by side
The Destrehan High School student-athletes became the first brother-sister duo to compete together in a varsity wrestling meet this past season – both were victorious in their matches on a night Destrehan defeated H.L
This was the last season for Bryson
They both say they’ll remember the experience for the rest of their lives
something nobody else really gets to experience,” said Bryson
“It was pretty great for my little sister and I to be able to wrestle the same night and both get wins.”
The Louisiana High School Athletic Association officially sanctioned girls wrestling for the 2024 season
which opened the door for Kinsley to potentially join her brother with the Wildcats
super close but that was changing and it was becoming so hard to get them to do anything together.”
This was the perfect chance to do that – and via a shared interest
“We’d take Bryson at 4-5-6 years old to wrestling
and Kinsley was always so engaged when he was wrestling,” said Megan
He used to always wrestle with her Minnie Mouse
ever let anyone else touch that but Bryson
And there’s plenty Kinsley likes about the sport
and you learn a lot of skills that helps you to be a better person,” Kinsley said
She wasn’t sure what to expect when she first started showing up to practice
“I kind of thought they’d be staring at me like I didn’t belong,” she said
they all acted like it was normal for me to be there.”
They knew Bryson and she kind of had that respect coming in of
‘That’s Bryson’s little sister.’ But they treated her like family.”
Before ever having the chance to compete alongside his sister
Bryson made his own return to the sport at Destrehan after time away
He began wrestling when he was just six years old
Bryson was a member of Brother Martin’s 2022 Division I state wrestling champion before walking away from the sport to play football
But once the family knew he would be returning to Destrehan
Bryson promised his mother he would wrestle again – and it’s a promise he says he’s glad he made and glad he kept
“I fell in love with the sport again,” Bryson said. “My teammates were great and I just enjoyed every second of it. And it made me want to become better.”
Just like his older teammates taught him when he first joined the team
made sure she was alright and made sure she was learning.”
While the night they made history was especially special for the Lambert family
Megan said the siblings’ time in the sport has grown their family in other ways

Destrehan is headed to Shreveport and a round two date with Haughton after the Wildcats earned a 56-43 opening round victory at home over Ouachita Parish Thursday night
It was the ninth straight victory for Destrehan
13 seed in Division I which moved to 23-8 this season
The Wildcats stormed out to an early lead before 20th seeded Ouachita Parish rallied to jump ahead
dominating the rebounding battle in the fourth quarter to seal the game in front of a fired up home crowd of supporters
“We executed our offense and we played impeccable defense,” said Destrehan head girls basketball coach Twalla Powell
we forced them to turn it over in the first quarter – and we owned the court at that point
Powell said the message at that point was to recognize Ouachita Parish wasn’t about to go away without a fight
but that losing wasn’t an option for the Wildcats
owned the boards in the fourth quarter and we’re headed to the second round.”
Destrehan leading scorer Koi Ursin said her jump shot wasn’t clicking early
so she shifted gears to another form of attack – the drive
Ursin attacked the basket time and time again and paced her team offensively with 23 points
“We knew they were an aggressive team and we had to match that
The senior said she’s determined for her last season to be the Wildcats’ best postseason in her time with the program
“I told my teammates that this is my last year – this is it for me
Ursin said this Destrehan team has strong chemistry both on and off the court
something that’s helped lead to the team’s success this season
Another key is this team has been able to handle pressure situations
Harmony Howard scored 14 and Amaya Armstrong scored 10 for Destrehan
McKenna Cooley led Ouachita Parish (18-10) with 15 points

Destrehan Plantation will soon play host to a fundraiser benefitting those suffering from pediatric brain cancer
Charles Parish based “Porkbelly Cartel” Hogs for the Cause team will organize the May 18 event
the latest in the Hogs’ organization’s ongoing fight to combat the illness
which is the leading terminal cancer among children in the United States
Funds raised by the group go toward alleviating financial burdens upon families of the children battling brain cancer
This event will follow up on the Hogs’ recent large fundraiser
the Hogs for the Cause festival in New Orleans
which saw a very strong turnout on April 4 and 5
Organizers say that the group was able to raise more than $5 million through the cook-off centered festival for affected families – besting its previous top fundraising mark
which was set at the annual festival a year prior
The upcoming May 18 event will be a crawfish boil
with 100 percent of proceeds going to the Hogs for the Cause mission
Jason Gonzalez of the Porkbelly Cartel team said Parish Seafood in Welsh is donating 2,000 pounds of crawfish for the event
which Gonzalez said organizers are looking to make an all-day
“There’s a ton of shade from all the oak trees
a lot of seating and tables … looking at the space yesterday
it’s definitely a great place for the event,” Gonzalez said
“It’s a great way to raise money for Hogs and hopefully make it a big event out here for the parish
We’ve been thinking about putting together an event like this and this year we decided to get this nailed down and make it happen.”
who owns Gonzo’s Smokehouse and BBQ in Luling
said the hope is to make a successful outing that could lead to it becoming an annual event
“Hopefully this is something that can grow and get bigger every year,” Gonzalez said
The Porkbelly Cartel’s fundraising efforts have already done just that
The team was able to raise $80,000 for Hogs for the Cause through its efforts over the past year – more than double the amount of the year prior
the team captured the Fan Favorite award for having the highest food sales of the 92 teams at the event
The team began with Hogs for the Cause in 2021
Gonzalez was long a fan of the Hogs’ events and wanted to help the fight against cancer
“I’ve been lucky – cancer doesn’t run in my family
but seeing these little kids being affected by this
it just really touches home and you want to do anything you can to help out,” Gonzalez said
Hogs for the Cause has donated millions more to families fighting cancer and to assist hospital programs
The organization was born when Becker Hall and Rene Louapre organized a pig roast to benefit the family of a child battling terminal brain cancer
and its success fueled the desire to help even more families
Hogs for the Cause has done that – it’s become the largest pediatric brain cancer outreach service in the country

Destrehan knew it had a tough draw in the opening round
with a very battle-tested and proud Ouachita Parish team visiting Wildcat Stadium
But the 10th-seeded Wildcats did what they do best in the postseason – win – this time taking an early lead and controlling the action on the way to a 30-12 victory over the No

Jackson Fields threw three touchdown passes and Jabari Mack hauled in two of them to lead Destrehan offensively
Ouachita Parish finishes the season with a 4-6 record – a deceiving mark given the level of competition the Lions played throughout the season
Ruston and West Monroe by a combined margin of five points
But Destrehan nonetheless moves on – the Wildcats have won six straight games following a 2-3 start to the season
we were able to put some points up and take care of the ball
we were able to make some timely stops when we needed them
Very proud of our players and coaches,” said Destrehan head coach Marcus Scott
The Lions’ defense brought a distinct challenge to overcome
and running straight at the two big men has not yielded success for teams this season
the Wildcats called a bit more on its passing game Friday night
and Fields and his weapons delivered – Mack
Phillip Wright III and Greg Wilfred all scored touchdowns for the Wildcats in this one
and we were going to try to get it to our playmakers on the outside,” Fields said
“Our offensive line did a great job in pass protection – they gave us the opportunity for our playmakers to make plays and for me to get them the ball.”
Scott said Destrehan knew it needed to approach that interior duo with a lot of respect
“Those two big defensive tackles – and they’re both juniors
by the way – they’re difference makers in the middle
We had to take what the defense gave us,” said Scott
Destrehan led 3-0 before a Wilfred touchdown run on a jet sweep pushed the Wildcats’ advantage to 9-0
Fields looked deep and found a wide open Phillip Wright III
who took the top off the defense and sprinted for a 73-yard touchdown that gave the Wildcats a 16-0 lead just before halftime
But that score didn’t hold into the break as Ouachita drove down the field in the two minutes and change it had on the clock
with Montrell Carter’s 2-yard touchdown run cutting the lead to 16-6 at the half
Ouachita prepared to punt from midfield – but the Lions were looking to make something happened and called for a fake punt
Destrehan sniffed it out and stonewalled the attempt to take over at midfield
Fields connected with Wright downfield again
with Wright setting up a short fade pass from Fields to Jabari Mack for a touchdown with 3:02 left in the third quarter
Conner added his second touchdown run of the night just over a minute later
Spurs – and an ensuing personal foul on the hit – set the Lions up deep in Destrehan territory
Conner’s touchdown run came on a similar play to the one he scored on earlier
which drove down the field and finished with another Fields to Mack face
this time to the same corner of the opposite endzone
Ouachita’s last chance to keep its season alive was extinguished by the DHS defense
which corralled Conner on a fourth down run short of the sticks to force a turnover on downs
Destrehan will play in round two for the 12th consecutive season next week
One thing the Wildcats will look to correct comes in the penalty department – there were a lot of flags on the field Friday
We need to get to work on cleaning that up
and we’ll start tonight,” Scott said
But overall it was a very good night for the Wildcats and Scott
who was back on the sidelines for a playoff game for the first time since 2022
Scott was absent from the playoffs last postseason as he underwent a kidney transplant
He remains unbeaten in the opening round during his tenure at Destrehan
“It really does feel good to be out here with the kids and our coaches to compete here in the playoffs
I missed it last year for obvious reasons – I’m very happy to be back,” Scott said

Chase Marcotte strolled to the plate in a tie game with the bases loaded
looking to make his mark on the Battle on the River rivalry
The Destrehan sophomore blasted a grand slam home run that put his team up 7-3
spurring the Wildcats onto a 10-3 rivalry victory over the Tigers
It was DHS’ eighth consecutive win and it snapped Hahnville’s streak of four wins in a row over Destrehan in the rivalry
It also secured a tie atop the District 8-5A standings to end the season between the Wildcats and Tigers
who each finished with one loss in 8-5A play
They beat us the past few years,” Marcotte said
“We have a team motto – it’s called ‘bunch of nobodies.’ We live by it
and he said his teammates gave him the chance to make an impact
“If it wasn’t for our guys getting on base and giving me the opportunity
I came up in a big spot and made it happen,” Marcotte said
I couldn’t have dreamed of this moment … definitely awesome.”
which will not count for the district standings but could very much loom large in power points and seeding – as well as in local bragging rights – is set for Thursday at Destrehan
Marcotte finished 2-for-5 with 5 RBIs and a run scored on the day
the Wildcats (21-12) flashed plenty of speed
Will Muller and Payton Stubbs leading the way with two each
Benjamin LaPlace and Frank Harding III each added a steal to the total
“We’re an aggressive team – we’ve got to be
you’re playing scared and that’s not how you want to play baseball,” Marcotte said
Destrehan head coach Chris Mire said he felt the Wildcats were playing a bit “stressed out” early on as they fell behind the Tigers 3-1
a senior who’s been having a great last couple weeks
and Chase Mire got a big base knock for us and sets up (Marcotte)
who’s probably been our best player all year.”
“I think he was trying to do a little too much early in the game
you know we’re built for this … he went out and put a big swing on it
Our offense tries to set things up for he and Payton Stubbs
and it worked out perfectly for us today in that spot
He did what he always does and came through for us,” Chris Mire said
Freshman Josh Muller came on in relief of Stubbs
who started the game but departed after Hahnville (17-11) scored three runs in the second inning
walking three and allowing two hits over 5.2 shutout innings
“Another young guy who is very calm and collected
especially for a freshman,” Chris Mire said
He’s a guy that we trust because we know exactly what we’re going to get.”
Mire added the freshman hurler was originally scheduled to start Thursday’s game
but that it was understood he’d be called upon Tuesday if it could mean a win there
“We also knew if there was a chance to win this game
he needed to be a part of it … he did what he does
filling up the strike zone and letting the defense play behind him – not pitching like a freshman
Will Muller went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs for Destrehan
Kaleb Guarisco went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the way offensively
Hahnville head coach Jared Vial was 4-0 against Destrehan prior to Tuesday
“It’s how you handle the magnitude of this game,” said Vial
The roller coaster of emotion … it was felt by the dugout
and the fans and even our guys on the field
we show up and try to play Hahnville-brand baseball.”
As to what needs to change for Hahnville to earn a measure of payback Thursday
Vial said much will come down to handling those emotional up and downs
I’m confident our guys who need to step up are going to step up.”
Hahnville took the lead in the second inning on a Landen Teague RBI single that scored Brayden Fontenot
Destrehan tied things up on a hard ball hit by Srubar that Hahnville misplayed for an error – Bennett McNamara scored
and the Wildcats kept the momentum going on a Will Muller RBI single that scored Stubbs and Jack Conravey
The Tigers fired back in the bottom of the second
making the Wildcats pay for a pair of walks when Kaleb Guarisco singled home Kaiden Bran to make it 3-2
The game was tied on a passed ball that allowed Fontenot to race home and score
That’s where the score sat until the top of the fourth inning
Larry Rodrigue and Chase Mire socked three consecutive singles to load the bases
who brought the Destrehan dugout and fans to elation on his go-ahead grand slam
Destrehan is playing its best baseball of the season – with Monday and Tuesday representing wins over teams who have been a thorn in the Wildcats’ side for the past few seasons
Chris Mire noted last week that Destrehan had not been able to come away with a win at South Lafourche in awhile
while Hahnville was riding a four-game win streak over Destrehan
“We were losing most of (the South Lafourche) game
and found a way to come back and get a win in a place we knew was going to be tough,” Mire said
“To show up today (against Hahnville) and have the kind of effort we had – that’s where we want to be at this time of the year
We have guys who have been put in tough situations
and I feel like guys are starting to embrace that and respond the right way.”
Marcotte delivered on the mound in the 9-4 win against South Lafourche
going six shutout innings in relief and striking out eight
Conravey went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Stubbs drove in two runs
The Destrehan offense has been on fire during this win streak
scoring at least eight runs in seven of the eight wins

Through a 9-game winning streak that Destrehan carried into the state semifinals
But little went right for Destrehan Friday night in Ruston – and the Wildcats’ season is over
In a battle of the past two state champions in Division I non-select
Ruston defeated Destrehan 44-7 to advance to play for the state championship at the Superdome next week
Destrehan’s lone score came via Phillip Wright III
who showed off his speed when he scored on a breakaway 39-yard sweep in the fourth quarter
a Bearcats defense that held Destrehan scoreless until the late stages of the fourth quarter
rode its rushing attack led by Dylone Brooks
Quarterback Josh Brantley passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another
Destrehan finishes the season with a record of 11-4
marching 65 yards and capping the drive with a touchdown run by Brooks
The Bearcats doubled up that lead after Ruston’s Trindon Moore intercepted Destrehan’s Jackson Fields at midfield with just over four minutes left in the first quarter
Ruston drove inside the Wildcats’ 10 and Brantley’s play-action pass to an open Peyton Nations in the back of the end zone gave Ruston a 14-0 lead
Ruston forced a turnover on downs after a big third down hit by Aidan Anding on Wright forced a fourth down try
A screen pass attempt to Malachi Dabney was incomplete and Ruston took over in its own territory
The Bearcats made DHS pay on a breakaway run by Brooks for a 30-yard touchdown that made it 21-0
and Hayes immediately flipped the field in his team’s favor on a long first down run
Destrehan’s Cameron Florent broke up a third down pass in the redzone to force a Jack Elliott field goal attempt
which was good to make it 24-0 at halftime
The Wildcats’ hopes of a rally were all but silenced early in the second half
this time with Landon Smith finding himself free in the flat for a 20-yard touchdown to make it 31-0
Destrehan could never get going in this one
DHS began the season 2-3 before igniting at the season’s midpoint
A dramatic Week 7 win over Captain Shreve was one of the key jumping off points
The season marked Destrehan’s ninth state semifinal in 12 seasons
the win marks the third season in a row the Bearcats advance to the Superdome
as it will attempt to win back-to-back championships
It also snapped a string of Wildcat playoff victories over the Bearcats; Destrehan eliminated Ruston in 2020

the Destrehan Road Warriors – are headed back to the state semifinals
DHS traveled more than five hours to the Shreveport area and for the second straight week they topped the 60-point mark
earning a 69-41 victory in the Division I non-select quarterfinals
This is the ninth time in 12 seasons Destrehan has reached the semifinal round
3 Ruston next week with a trip to the Superdome and the state championship game on the line
Destrehan has scored 132 points over the past two games
In a season that saw Destrehan get off to a bumpy 2-3 start while being dealt a number of key injuries
many may not have seen this run coming for the Wildcats – every program has off years
“It is sweet,” said Destrehan head coach Marcus Scott
headed to his fourth semifinal with the Wildcats since taking the program’s helm in 2020
This was a matchup of two highly proficient offensive teams
led in part by standout quarterbacks: Ben Taylor of Airline and Jackson Fields of Destrehan
But Destrehan brought a scalding hot running game back up north – and Malachi Dabney and the DHS offensive line did not cool off whatsoever
Dabney topped the 200-mark for the fourth time in the past seven games and he scored five touchdowns
The sophomore has scored 11 touchdowns over the past two games
Ben Taylor put Airline ahead 6-0 on a 1-yard sneak in the first quarter
set up by his completion to Kenny Darby down the field
and a DJ Islands’ rushing touchdown made it a slim 21-20 Destrehan lead early in the second quarter
Destrehan (10-3) turned it on – and at the end of the first half
the Wildcats showed exactly how dangerous they are
and how quickly they can open up a staggering lead
Taylor attempted a pass across the field that was intercepted by Destrehan linebacker Semaj Walker
A convoy of blockers hustled into position and Walker returned the ball 40 yards for a touchdown
Taylor heaved a ball for the endzone that was intercepted by Destrehan’s Damien Richard
Richard caught the ball at the Destrehan 1 and the former running back had his own pick six on the mind – he broke a tackle and raced 97 yards
But Walker set up a 2-yard Dabney touchdown on the final play of the half – the two touchdowns pushed Destrehan from a 35-27 lead to 48-27 at halftime
you need to try to keep a cushion because (Airline) is so very
including a fumble recovery on kickoff coverage – the second straight week the Wildcats’ special teams came up with a turnover
Destrehan scored immediately out of the halftime break
scoring to cap its first drive of the second half to take a 55-27 lead
And for all Airline’s considerable firepower
The Vikings finish 2024 with a record of 11-1
Airline averaged 53.7 points per game entering Friday’s matchup
who finishes his prep career as one of the leading passers in the history of Louisiana
Friday’s total of 41 was the second lowest mark of the season for the Vikings
“A lot of people didn’t see us making it to this point,” said Scott

5-1) end the regular season in a three-way tie for the District 8-5A crown with Hahnville and Terrebonne – Terrebonne defeated Destrehan
Destrehan defeated Hahnville and Hahnville defeated Terrebonne this season
DHS entered the regular season’s final week ranked No
10 in Division I non-select power points – a few weeks ago
but an unbeaten second half proved the cure for that
it is the fifth consecutive season with a district championship
a perfect 5-for-5 in the tenure of head coach Marcus Scott
including time at John Ehret and West Jefferson
it’s the ninth district title in 13 years as a head coach
“It’s a testament to the kids and assistant coaches who stayed with it
You hear a lot of criticism during a tough time – everybody stuck together
everybody in the building relied on each other
kind of blocked out the outside noise and kept working,” Scott said
Destrehan scored on its first drive against Thibodaux (4-5
“We were able to ride the momentum – we got a couple of turnovers in there and got some short fields
Destrehan’s Jabari Mack and Malachi Dabney each scored two touchdowns
while Phillip Wright and Greg Wilfred also added touchdowns
Quarterback Jackson Fields spread the ball around to all of his receivers
Coming off of an emotional win over Hahnville a week earlier
Scott credited his team for maintaining its focus to close the regular season strong
but our pregame walk through today was much better,” Scott said
“That was a plus for us headed into tonight.”
Mack help lead Destrehan to opening round victory
Strong 2nd half propels Hahnville to over Lakeshore
Destrehan’s Malachi Dabney had a career best performance two weeks ago against Captain Shreve
and he decided to add another huge game to go with it – this time
Dabney rushed for more than 250 yards to go with a touchdown and Jabari Mack scored two touchdowns as Destrehan held off a late rally by Hahnville to capture a 31-24 victory in Friday night’s Battle on the River at Wildcat Stadium
It’s Destrehan’s seventh consecutive win over the Tigers
but this was a back-and-forth encounter that was tied at the half
“I was trying to prove a point – come out strong and show people who we really are,” said Dabney
who now has two performances of more than 200 rushing yards in three weeks
but we sorted things out … I’m just trying to get better every week.”
Destrehan head coach Marcus Scott said his team answered the call against the rival Tigers
he just rushed for more than 240 against Captain Shreve and he’s over 250 tonight … tremendous effort by him
the offensive line and the offense as a whole,” Scott said
“That (offensive line) is playing with a lot of confidence
This is the time of year you want to be playing your best.”
who showed incredible toughness in the victory
Mack suffered a separated shoulder in the first quarter of Friday’s game
but remained in and time and time again came up with critical plays for Destrehan
We had to pop it back in and put a brace on … he really showed that not only is he a great athlete
Bennett Naquin and Patrick Jackson each scored on the ground for Hahnville
Jackson Fields threw three touchdown passes for Destrehan
including two to Mack and one to Greg Wilfred
The Destrehan win creates a three-way tie in the loss column atop District 8-5A
Tigers and Terrebonne each having one loss
with a 5-1 league mark and a 6-2 record overall
4-1) has one remaining district game as does Terrebonne in the season’s final week
This was the first matchup between Destrehan and Hahnville since Greg Boyne
former longtime Destrehan offensive coordinator
and we made too many mistakes to beat a good football team
You know the respect I have for Coach Scott and the staff
This was a playoff atmosphere and we needed to play in a game like this
Boyne said during the week that it was a bit surreal to prepare against a program
coaches and players he spent so much time with
and he said it was similar as the game started
having spent so many years with them,” Boyne said
trying to find a way to score against Coach Taffi’s defense.”
Scott said he knew nothing would be easy against Boyne
who was on Scott’s staff at both Destrehan and West Jefferson at different times
and I imagine the future’s going to be similar to these games – competitive every year for sure,” Scott said
And the matchup lived up to the hype surrounding it
with Hahnville entering the game as the district’s last remaining unbeaten team and Destrehan looking to secure its own share of the crown
The game’s very first play brought fans to their feet as Hahnville fumbled the opening kickoff
which Destrehan appeared to recover in the endzone – but because the ball was ruled to have rolled into the endzone just prior to recovery
it became an automatic touchback and first down at the 20 for Hahnville
The Tigers put together a drive from there
capping it off with a 1-yard sneak by Teague to make it 7-0
A key play came on a play-action pass by Teague to Koa Romero that went for 25 yards down to the DHS 1
Destrehan answered with 25-yard Jackson Harris field goal
Both offenses drove deep into scoring range before the defenses held firm in the redzone
The Wildcats tied the game in the second quarter on a 21-yard touchdown run by Dabney
it looked as though Destrehan might lead going into halftime as it marched down to the HHS 1 with less than a minute left in the second quarter
But Hahnville stopped the Wildcats on a fourth down from the 1
“We made an emphasis in the offseason to get stronger,” said Boyne
“I know what Coach (Tim) Taffi does with (Destrehan)
and I thought tonight we were just as strong
Just too many mistakes for us in the middle of the field.”
Destrehan had found its footing on offense
and the goal line stop did not interrupt its momentum
The Wildcats began the third quarter by surging down the field
with Jackson Fields’ 25-yard touchdown pass down the middle to a wide-open Greg Wilfred making it 17-10
A Calvin Smith 31-yard run had Hahnville in business on the Tigers’ next drive
but HHS couldn’t convert on a field goal attempt to end the drive
Destrehan made Hahnville pay for that when Fields connected with Mack for a 16-yard touchdown to open the lead up to two touchdowns
driving down to the Destrehan 5 before Naquin took the ball on a keeper for a rushing score
That was set up by a Teague pass to Michael Propps deep down the middle to the Destrehan 15
Destrehan called on Dabney – who was making great use of some large openings created by a Wildcats’ offensive line that dominated in the second half
Dabney and Tony Crump collectively ran the Wildcats into the Hahnville red zone
“I thought we got a little tired,” Boyne said
without watching the film yet … we had some guys out of position
Hopefully we’ll have a good week and bounce back.”
A personal foul penalty pushed Destrehan back to the 30
It didn’t matter as Fields immediately found Mack down the right sideline for a touchdown pass that made it 31-17
A squib kick didn’t materialize like Destrehan hoped
giving Hahnville the ball near midfield to start the next drive
But time was dwindling and Hahnville needed to score quickly – the Tigers did just that
Smith carried for a big gain and got Hahnville inside the DHS 20
and the Tigers converted soon after on a Jackson touchdown run to make it 31-24
Destrehan converted a first down on a Mack run
but the Tigers still had time outs and some clock to work with
Hahnville forced a third down incompletion on a Fields throw to Mack and Destrehan had to punt
Hahnville converted a 4th and 10 pass by Teague to Kobe Louis that extended the game
and this time Teague’s pass deep down the right sideline to Louis fell incomplete – sealing the victory for Destrehan

as Destrehan High School readied to face visiting Cohen in boys basketball
Alexander was called to midcourt just before the game
was a coach at Destrehan and at Bethune High School in Norco
an all-Black school in Norco that closed in 1969
with its students moving to Destrehan in the early years of desegregation
Henry coached basketball and baseball at Bethune
Ellis Alexander was presented with a Bethune jersey emblazoned with the number 44 – which carries special meaning for the Hahnville man and longtime St
Charles Parish School Board representative
“I wear 44 on some of my shirts and jackets
I follow Formula One (racing) and my favorite driver is Lewis Hamilton
And President Obama was the 44th president
It’s three reasons I wear the number,” Alexander said
the Destrehan players took off their warmups and revealed they were suited up in Bethune throwback jerseys specially made for the occasion
“It almost gave me chills,” Alexander said
“I never thought I’d see that … it’s special
Destrehan athletic director George McGovern said the idea was born from a desire to put together something memorable and different for Destrehan High’s ongoing 100-year celebration
With the Cohen game falling on DHS’ alumni night
“It’s important understanding where you came from
“The impact they made for what Destrehan is today
We wanted to honor those people … with Mr
to ensure Alexander would be surprised by the gesture
“Only about four or five people in the parish knew what we were doing – we wanted to keep it under wraps,” McGovern said
The players were presented with the uniforms before the game
and McGovern spoke to them about the history behind all of this
“I really enjoyed seeing their reaction to it
It seemed like they took pride in it,” McGovern said
“To hear the crowd reaction when the kids took the warmups off (and saw the jerseys) … it was really exciting to hear how it was received by everyone.”
It seemed to carry over to the court – Destrehan won decisively
McGovern said the plan is to have a “throwback” home game with the players wearing the Bethune jerseys each year
Destrehan principal Jason Madere said it presented a great chance to share some of the school’s history with its students of today
“We were able to tie it into the alumni basketball game
which helped make it extra special,” Madere said
“We had guys from our 1973 team … we had a gentleman who played for (Henry Alexander) at Bethune
And Bethune and Cohen used to play one another in basketball
“But the biggest thing for me is the kids and that they got to be a part of it.”
Madere echoed McGovern in the importance of highlighting what came before
“Looking at those who walked the halls before us … Destrehan High School is a special place to be
and that’s not just about what happens now
We appreciate what they did for us,” he said
Alexander recalled attending high school at Carver and the nights where Bethune and Carver would play one another on the basketball court
there really was no celebrating either way.”
Henry was a World War II veteran who was part of the Allied landing at Normandy Beach in 1944
he returned to Luling and married his love Doris

Isaac said Mitchell and his three siblings grew up in Norco

Five match winning streak spurs Destrehan into district play
Destrehan may have traveled more than 300 miles to get to Shreveport for Friday night’s second round battle with Northwood
but there was absolutely no sign of sluggishness from a Wildcats team that is headed back to the quarterfinals – and one that made a statement
The Wildcats won for the seventh straight week
lighting up the scoreboard in a 63-21 win at Northwood
2 Airline in the Division I non-select quarterfinals
Malachi Dabney scored six touchdowns for Destrehan to lead the way
posting a monster effort to lift his team to the next round
He rushed 26 times for 270 yards on the night
a dominating performance that stands as his third 200-plus yard outing in just over a month
But after recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff to set the Wildcats’ up early in strong field position
Jackson Fields and Jabari Mack got the Destrehan offense rolling with a touchdown connection that made it 7-0
“We got off to a fast start tonight,” Destrehan head coach Marcus Scott
“Sometimes you get on the road and come out a little sluggish
but the kids did a good job handling the trip.”
that initial touchdown came at a cost as Mack was forced to leave the game with an injury
who got loose on two long touchdown runs in the first half to help Destrehan take full control of the game
It was the ideal game script for the Wildcats against a Northwood team that could certainly pass the ball behind quarterback Jaxon Benzler
who had accounted for 28 touchdowns against just three interceptions entering Friday’s game
But Northwood’s bread and butter is the run – and the play-action pass off of it – and the Wildcats quickly made their opponent one-dimensional
so stopping that was our priority,” Scott said
“They had to get away from what they really wanted to do – but even so
they have success throwing the ball as well
we had to stay disciplined in our drops,” Scott said
Scott said Destrehan’s focus on Friday despite the long road trip was a sign of maturity
and he pointed to the team’s early season experience of traveling to Alexandria as something that helped to prepare them
“I think it’s really good for team bonding,” Scott said
“We went to Alexandria specifically to get ourselves ready for trips like this.”

Terrance Anderson’s battle with cancer was supposed to be over
Rose 19-year-old battled cancer throughout his senior year of high school
he would be healthy enough to attend graduation with his Destrehan High School classmates
His cancer went into remission and he was able to ring the bell that year
with hopes that he would be cancer-free from then on
Anderson said after working to regain his strength
he thought he was back to being able to live his normal day-to-day life and that he had enrolled in college to become a welder
But a trip to the emergency room in 2024 revealed the cancer had spread to his lungs and that his battle had begun anew
He underwent major lung surgery in November with six centimeters of his lung removed. He estimates it will be at least seven months before he could be fully recovered and able to work again. A GoFundMe page (titled “Supporting Terrance through cancer relapse”) has garnered nearly $4,000 in donations to help offset the resulting financial burden
“I never expected my whole life to change
this is the last fight,” Anderson wrote via the fundraising page
Anderson was preparing for basketball season early in his senior year when he suddenly developed pain in his leg when running or jumping
I couldn’t straighten my leg out,” Anderson said
maybe it’s a torn ligament but … not really
There was no way that this was a torn ligament
I had to be strong for the both of us,” said Anderson

Destrehan did what it set out to do Friday night
earning a decisive win – and along the way
The Wildcats evened out their record at 3-3 and moved to 2-1 in District 8-5A with a 33-7 victory at H.L
on a night starting quarterback Jackson Fields returned after missing four games due to injury
“I thought we played well early – there were some big play opportunities that we were able to take advantage of,” said Destrehan head coach Marcus Scott
It was a bounce back win for the Wildcats after the team suffered its first district loss of the season last week to Terrebonne
Destrehan scored 33 points unanswered to seize full control before Bourgeois (3-3
0-2) scored its lone touchdown of the night
Phillip Wright threw a touchdown pass and caught another from Fields
who intercepted two passes – returning one for 90 yards and a touchdown
one of the state’s leading passer as a sophomore in 2023
suffered an injury in Destrehan’s opening night home loss to Catholic-Baton Rouge
he split reps at quarterback with freshman A’ushai Smith
who started four games for Destrehan in Fields’ absence and went 2-2
Scott said the team is happy to have Fields back
who was pressed into duty earlier in his career than expected but played beyond his years
for a 14-year-old who was a middle school quarterback last year at Albert Cammon – he did an outstanding job,” Scott said
“So now we know we have some good depth at that position … Jackson led the metro area in passing last year
The first game he played this year was in a rain storm,” said Scott
“Tonight was the first time we had a chance to see him playing on a dry surface and throw it around a little bit
We had good balance on the ground and through the air.”
Bailey’s pick six interception allowed him a chance to go back to his roots on the offensive side of the ball – Bailey played running back last year before moving to defense this season
“He turned into a running back pretty quickly – he showed great hands and body control,” said Scott
“We got a huge block downfield from Cameron Florent that got him all the way to the endzone
It was a big moment in the game,” said Scott

It was another undefeated regular season for Destrehan
a statement that should not seem as “business as usual” as it does
But the Wildcats continue to win and perform overall as one of the state’s most dangerous championship contenders

This is a program that went through an emotional time late in the year as head coach Marcus Scott had to step away – Scott needed a new kidney and received one via a successful transplant
and with his new lease on life he’s eager to guide a very talented 2024 edition of the Wildcats
Scott said Fields has demonstrated an understanding of what is expected within the Destrehan offense at a very early age and experience level

“You don’t have to go out and try to do too much

and we have some very talented guys coming back to fill those roles
But Jackson also understands that we don’t force stuff.”
Eight different receivers caught touchdown passes from Fields during the season
Jhase Thomas will be Destrehan’s backup quarterback
a running back other than Shane Lee enters the season as a starter
Lee was a commanding presence in the Destrehan backfield
earning significant playing time as a freshman before starting for three dominant seasons
they have a pretty good idea of what to expect from his successor
Shane Ward stepped up in Lee’s absence late last season while the latter was recovering from an injury and was highly productive
Ward was also a big part of the rushing attack in general throughout the season
averaging 6.1 yards per carry on the way to 449 yards and four touchdowns last regular season
to go with six catches for 50 yards and another score
“He had a really strong junior season for us,” Scott said
“He really did well and he’s been putting in a lot of work
I’m really looking forward to seeing him perform this season because he’s worked so hard to get himself to this point.”
Destrehan isn’t as experienced behind Ward
Starting wide receiver Jabari Mack will also see time at running back
Even on a very talented Destrehan roster top to bottom
Seniors Phillip Wright III and Johnnie Thiel IV and juniors Greg Wilfred and Jabari Mack combined for more than 1,500 yards through the air and 14 touchdowns through the air in the regular season
Accurately predicting which one would have the biggest game from week to week would have been quite the puzzle to solve – and that’s exactly how Destrehan likes it
and what keeps opposing defensive coaches up at night
Mack and Wilfred are getting a great deal of early attention as well from the college level
headed into their respective junior seasons
And all have a wealth of chemistry built with Fields after last season
“Jabari is probably the most versatile as to what he can do – he can play every skill position
and he’s certainly special with the ball in his hands
he gives us that vertical threat to stretch the field
those guys in the slot are kind of the safety blanket for Jackson
They give you advantageous matchups in the slot.”
Senior Brian Guichard and junior Cameron Ricks will also be key parts of the offense
Guichard will be the primary tight end while Ricks will play the H-back role
Bryce Bufkin will mix in here as well from the defensive side
with three starters back along an offensive line led by senior center Michael Reed
Reed started at guard for Destrehan as a sophomore in its state championship win two years ago
Alongside him will be junior guards Gage Schreiber and Jeshua Lazo
senior tackle Andrew Dragna and junior tackle Earl Collins
This is a group with good size across the board – Collins
It’s a group that’s been working together for awhile now and we’re looking forward to seeing them put it all together this year,” Scott said
Junior Bryce Bufkin returns on the defensive line
and will start along with senior Noah Murr and senior nose guard Kerry Chopin
Destrehan rotates several players in to keep its linemen fresh and
Braylon Montero and Brent Bayonne will provide depth and valuable snaps
“It’s a group we’ll be able to play six or seven guys regularly,” Scott said
“We’ve got some guys up on our defensive front we feel good about
We didn’t have the depth we do now in the spring
and we started doing crossover periods where some guys play both ways
so we can use a defensive lineman on offense if we need to or vice versa
Senior Myd Gilbert is among Destrehan’s most experienced defensive playmakers
someone who earned considerable time as a sophomore before shining as a starter in his junior season
Joining him in that group will be senior Brody Picou
who returns after playing extensively last season
Walker can slot in at linebacker or safety alike
something that opens up several options and lineup combinations for DHS
“He gives us the ability to move some parts around if we need to,” said Scott
LSU committed safety Jhase Thomas leads the way here
The son for former New Orleans Saints standout cornerback Fred Thomas
he is coming off a very strong spring and summer
and he figures to make his presence known in the secondary all season long
That was certainly the case in Destrehan’s spring game with Karr
when a bone-rattling hit by the senior set an early-tone
Thomas is rangy at safety and will lead what is otherwise a young secondary
“He’s continued his growth from the spring
and especially from a leadership standpoint – he’s a lot more vocal on the field,” said Scott
We have two talented guys at corner but they’re both first-year starters coming over from offense
he understands communication is critical.”
Senior Semaj Walker will mix in here as well as linebacker
Senior Jayden Bailey and junior Damien Richard give DHS a duo of very speedy corners on the outside
Senior safety Blake Brown was chosen as the team’s most improved player after a very strong spring
He’s carried his momentum into the summer and fall
Sophomores Frank Harding and Jakyrin Sanchez provide depth
Mack and Wright will jump over from the offensive side of the ball to see time in the secondary
Placekicker Jackson Harris and punter Ian Arceneaux will take on the team’s place kicking duties this season
Beau Senior serving as long snapper and Anthony Estrada holding
Kick and punt returners will see a mix including Greg Wilfred

These were just a few of the many descriptions of Kaylee Diodene by those who knew her during her life
Charles Parish community has rallied around its own following the tragic death of the 20-year-old Destrehan High School alum
the daughter of Norco Elementary School principal Shannon Diodene and longtime Destrehan teacher and assistant baseball coach Donnie Diodene
8 due to a very aggressive form of acute myeloid leukemia
“My daughter wanted to save the planet,” Donnie said
Kaylee loved animals and had a passion for protecting the environment
an interest that flourished during her time as a student of longtime Harry Hurst Middle School teacher Barry Guillot and with the Wetlands Watchers
Her desire to make the world a better place led her to study environmental conservation biology at the University of Southern Mississippi
where she was a junior in the honors program
And making the world a better place for others seemed to come natural for Kaylee
“One thing she did a really good job of is she made everyone feel special,” Donnie said
“And she made you believe that you could be better
Because that’s how she was – she always thought she could be better
“I can’t tell you how many times I ever saw my daughter where she wasn’t smiling
And she would always be silly to make other people laugh
She would be the clown to make you feel better.”
Kaylee spent the bulk of her final month living what her family called her dream
A GoFundMe page (titled Support the Diodene Family in Memory of Kaylee) has been established by Norco Elementary teacher Madeline Evers with the aim of easing funeral expenses and other financial burdens during this time
Many have rallied to help – more than $20,000 in donations were made in the page’s first eight hours online
“We obviously know that we can’t take away the pain and hurt that comes with this
but we do know the family is going to have a lot of financial barriers to cross over the next few weeks … we were just blown away (by the support),” Evers said
“It’s a testament to Shannon and Donnie as parents and who Kaylee was as a person
and the impact she had on everyone she came in contact with.”
Evers said Kaylee had a way of brightening the day when she would visit NES
“I have a 2-year-old daughter and every time I would talk with Kaylee
How’s she doing?’ And what 19-to-20-year-old is that thoughtful
bringing smiles to everyone’s faces,” Evers said
Kaylee returned home late last month after her time overseas
Blood work revealed she had cancer – nobody knew she was sick
“This all happened in a week,” Shannon said
Both parents said dealing with the pain of her loss has been day by day – or even moment by moment
“My heart is absolutely shattered,” Shannon said
and I ask her to give me the strength to get up and take it one step at a time
And it’s all the support around us and it’s our daughter giving us that strength
They called the community support overwhelming
“You can’t even put it into words … you can say
‘thank you,’ but that’s not close to enough,” Donnie said
In addition to the GoFundMe, gift card donations can be made to the family on mealtrain.com (titled Meal Train for The Diodene Family)
A raffle by Linen Rose Photography and Dawn Roe Photography raised funding for the family as well
The Destrehan baseball team arrived at the Diodenes’ home to cut their grass
“I think we’re both speechless,” Shannon said
“There are no words to express how grateful we are for all of the love
Another thing they’ve both found solace in is the many stories they’ve heard over the past several days about Kaylee’s very big heart
the person who pulled a bunch of people together that wouldn’t normally be together,” Shannon said
One example of her desire to help others came when she joined the student government at Southern Mississippi – the first thing she did was advocate for a railing around the school’s parking garage
Students had committed suicide at the location
and she sought to prevent that from happening
they would go to visit nursing homes and made it a point to stay and talk with the residents – “people there didn’t always get visitors
and she wanted to make them feel special,” Shannon said
Kaylee was worried about her parents given she was leaving – and so she made them emotional support bears
“Now they mean so much more,” Shannon said
Many of her good deeds are only now being discovered by her parents
but we didn’t know how unselfish she was,” said Donnie
“She never told us about the things she was doing
She never wanted anything in return – she just did it.”

But it won’t be easy – a long road trip awaits to Shreveport as No

Northwood is 10-1 this season and winners of seven in a row
The Falcons have been one of the highest scoring teams in Louisiana
with nine performances of 40 points or more – including last week’s opening round win over Salmen
The program has taken a big step forward in 2024
after a 2023 season that saw the team finish 5-5 with an opening round loss to Rummel in the postseason
Quarterback Jaxon Bentzler is a first-year quarterback for the Falcons who converted from tight end; he’s clearly a quick study
given the consistency and explosiveness the Northwood offense has displayed
“He’s a good athlete who can throw it and run it,” said Destrehan head coach Marcus Scott
“We’ve got to do what we can to contain him.”
The featured playmaker in this offense is junior running back Kyran Johnson
and against Salmen that gameplan resulted in 204 yards over his 32 carries
He will also line up at wide receiver and gives a defense lots to prepare for
“They can really present some problems,” Scott said
“They have a very strong run game and they lean on it heavily with their backs and their quarterback
They’ll run play-action and get into the screen game off of that
they’re running their gap scheme and work from there.”
Northwood likes to largely operate from a base 3-4 and looks to limit big plays
The trip to Shreveport will be the longest postseason journey in the Scott era – Acadiana in Lafayette was the previous longest
Shreveport is nearly five hours away from Destrehan
this Wildcats team has some useful travel experience for this instance – while not quite as far as Shreveport
Destrehan’s week 3 trip to Alexandria offered something to call back on
“The biggest difference is where and when do we stop and do a walkthrough,” said Scott of the difference a long trip like this makes to the usual routine
“Where you’re gonna eat … those kinds of things
it can tend to distract people from the goal,” Scott said
“The challenge is keeping your mental focus when you’re out of routine.”
THE WRIGHT STUFF – Phillip Wright III’s imprint was on Friday night’s 30-12 victory over Ouachita Parish
as the LSU commit hauled in three catches for 113 yards and a touchdown
He’s had a knack for coming through with big plays in big games
Wright’s difference-making speed makes everything easier for quarterback Jackson Fields and the Wildcats’ offense as a whole
“When you have a Phillip Wright on the field
teams are forced to play you differently and respect his speed,” Scott said
with that threat out there on the perimeter any time they go in motion.”
MACK ATTACK – It was another monster game for Jabari Mack
who kicked off the playoffs in style with two touchdown receptions – and 12 catches in total
ran four times for 15 yards and even completed a pass – yes
Dabney’s huge night lifts Destrehan to quarterfinals
2025 has already proven to be a milestone year for Destrehan softball
the Wildcats finished District 8-5A play with a mark of 4-1
tied with Hahnville atop the standings – and due to Destrehan’s 10-0 head-to-head victory over the Tigers
the Wildcats earned the first outright district championship in the history of the program
Destrehan’s last district softball title of any kind came in 2016 when it split the crown
“That was a goal our team set out for before the season started
It’s just reassuring that we’re heading in the right direction,” said Destrehan head coach Craig Perrier
you don’t always take the time to enjoy it much until it’s all said and done because you’re looking at the next game … we put them to the test
we really try to harp on the little things
They buy in and it’s been a whole lot of fun to coach this group.”
Callie Bordelon proved the hero on Tuesday as Destrehan earned a 4-2 home victory over Fisher
her two-run home run in the fifth inning breaking what was a 2-2 tie
Burkett started the scoring off with a towering solo home run
while Wildcats’ teammate Jolie Lozano’s RBI single in the third made it a 2-0 lead
It was a case of Lozano helping her own cause – the left-hander earned the win on the mound
going the complete game and striking out four
She allowed two unearned runs on two hits and two walks
Burkett reached base in all four of her at-bats
drawing three walks after her early home run
Gracie Bourgeois and Rylie Staton each earned a hit and scored a run
Bourgeois and Lozano each doubled in the game
It was the latest result after what was a loaded stretch of action for the Ladycats
While Tuesday’s game came on the heels of a few off days
prior to that Destrehan played 18 games from March 6 to March 27
several of those matchups against some of the state’s best competition – Sam Houston
Amant are all ranked in the Top 10 of Division I non-select power points
Central Catholic is 14th in Division IV select
Destrehan (16-8 overall) went 5-4 in those matchups
we knew we’d have a bunch of freshmen out here … we knew we’d be able to compete
but we didn’t know exactly how good we were going to be,” said Perrier
that was a polished team in the second round of the playoffs
We weren’t ready for that atmosphere or a team of that caliber
So when I went into making the schedule for this year
‘That’s not going to happen again.’ We were going to be battle tested
We were going to see how we compete against those teams
see what we need to improve on and how we plan on getting there.”
The 3-1 win at Central Catholic saw Victoria Morrow get DHS started with an early RBI double to make it 1-0 after an inning
Burkett followed up later with a solo home run
with Staton going 2-for-4 with an RBI to supply the day’s third run
Jolie Lozano went the complete game and allowed one unearned run on eight hits and a walk
Lozano and Staton each had three hits in Destrehan’s 11-3 win over Haughton
Burkett doubled twice and drove in three runs
Lozano and Leanna Vicknair each drove in two
Her home run Tuesday was her 19th of the season
Charles Parish single season home run record
previously 16 held by Hahnville’s Kat Smith
Burkett is tied atop the state for the home run lead this year
Burkett is batting a staggering .611 with a .683 on-base percentage
She has 20 walks and has struck out just twice
and averages a home run every 4.25 at bats
“I thought before the season she should be able to hit 15 home runs this year,” Perrier said
“It’s gonna be hard because we’re facing a lot of good teams … I mean
she’s waiting for her pitch and she understands she can hit with two strikes
If it’s not a pitch she feels she can really drive
She has a really good eye for the strike zone.”
That approach arguably makes that strikeout total about as impressive as the home run count – she’s willing to take at-bats deep into the count but has been almost impossible to strike out so far
I’ve never been around anything like this,” Perrier said

As we reach the penultimate week of the 2024 high school football season
it’s all about the Wildcats for the River Parishes
Only two teams from the River Parishes are still playing in this week’s semifinal rounds of the playoffs — St
And both are serious contenders to reach the finals to be played next week in the Caesars Superdome
They’ve been there before. And there are no strangers in these semifinals.St
James was the Division III non-select state runner-up last season
And that is who the Mighty Wildcats face this week in the semifinals
5 Farmers (9-4) will travel to the cane fields of Vacherie for Friday night’s contest
Wildcats coach LaVanta Davis said this is not a revenge game.“It’s more of a redemption game,” he said.Davis said it was no fun watching the film from last year’s heart-breaking final
who had been to the finals three consecutive years only to come away with a runner-up trophy
won on their fourth trip thanks to a last-minute touchdown and a “gutsy” two-point conversion that gave them a 36-35 win
You could tell the experience they had being there in consecutive years
They benefitted from that.”Davis said he and the coaching staff definitely learned a few lessons.“Try to be as simple and consistent as possible,” Davis said
“Make these things real simple for these young men and allow them to play faster and think less.”St
James advanced to the semifinals with an impressive 26-7 victory over No
Freshman quarterback Jajuan Jackson threw two touchdown passes to Jakias Villanueva
one for 20 yards and the other for 55 yards
Jye Blaine turned an interception into a 38-yard touchdown
scored from 10 yards out to cap the Wildcats’ scoring
whose only losses were to Terrebonne and Archbishop Shaw
The Destrehan Wildcats could change their mascot to the Road Warriors this season
After back-to-back trips to Shreveport and coming away with big wins against Northwood (63-21) and Airline (69-41)
the Wildcats (11-3) get to travel a little more east to take on No
Coach Marcus Scott said the travel is inconsequential.“They just get on the bus and go play,” Scott said. These two teams are no strangers either.Destrehan and Ruston have faced each other three times over the past four years with Destrehan winning all three
In 2020 Destrehan won 6-0 on a scoop-and score
In 2021 the Wildcats won 24-10 in the semifinals then went on to lose to Zachary in the championship game
Destrehan defeated Ruston 17-10 for its fifth state title
But the Bearcats are the defending Division I non-select state champions.“These guys are always a challenge,” Scott said
There have been some knock-down-drag-outs between us.”This game should be no exception
the MVP of last year’s title game who signed with Tulane on Wednesday
accounted for five touchdowns in the Bearcats 49-7 quarterfinal win over No
But the Bearcats will face the tough task of trying to stop Destrehan sophomore running back Malachi Dabney
who ran for more than 200 yards and five touchdowns last week
He has rushed for more than 200 yards four times in the past seven games and has scored 11 touchdowns in the last two games.“He doesn’t even realize how many he has until the end of the game,” Scott said
it’s always going to come down to taking care of the football
and trying to steal a possession – a turnover or a couple of punts in there
You’ve got to try to get a few extra possessions for your offense.”
As Destrehan head girls basketball coach Twalla Powell guides her team through her third season at the program’s helm
she’s seeing the traits she hoped to see entering the season
The core of this Ladycats group just entered its third year in Powell’s system
and the Wildcats have earned a 8-5 record against the early portion of what the coach said is the toughest schedule she’s put together at Destrehan
“We’ve returned so many players with experience and this team plays together
They’re a group that’s together on and off the floor
They enjoy playing together and that shows when they take the court
The Wildcats most recently scored wins at Chalmette
and at home over previously unbeaten Slidell
The Tigers were 11-0 entering their game with Destrehan
Leading scorer Koi Ursin is back this season
The senior point guard has stepped up her leadership
as she looks to help fuel a step forward this season for Destrehan
“She’s communicating and playing well at both ends of the floor,” Powell said
“She’s getting us into and executing our plays
and her ability to create off the dribble is phenominal
protecting the paint and asserting herself as a force on the boards
she draws a lot of people to her and she’s finding the open player
Sophomore Jaedyn Dickerson has given the team a big boost
Dickerson earned her way into the Ladycats’ rotation and Powell says she sparks a fire each time the reserve guard takes the floor
Powell added Dickerson plays a bigger game than her size would suggest
“She rebounds like she’s 6’2 – and she might be 4’11 at most,” Powell said
She contributes in every facet of the game
making a 3 – she hit two tonight (Tuesday).”
And sophomore Raya Johnson has bolstered the starting lineup
after earning experience late last season as Destrehan battled injury
“She was on the JV team last year and stepped in against Fontainebleau,” said Powell
“She did a good job for us and that’s carried over
And she forces lots of turnovers – she has quick hands
quick feet and very good court awareness.”
Destrehan began the season with six wins in eight games – besting Vandebilt Catholic
Amant and Phoenix before earning a tournament win over rival Hahnville
DHS also defeated Cabrini and Salmen before falling in three straight
including Tuesday night’s tight loss at Ponchatoula
“This schedule is preparing us for district play and the state tournament,” Powell said
“This group has been together for three years
and with the experience we have and the new additions who have made an impact
we’re looking to make some moves this year.”

Hahnville and Destrehan finished in a deadlock
A year and another game later – and we still don’t have a winner
The Tigers and Wildcats finished Friday night’s game at Destrehan with a score of 0-0
The tie denied Hahnville the chance to seal a 4-0 District 7-I record
but the Tigers nonetheless have secured the district championship with a final league mark of 3-0-1
was a positive result for Destrehan (7-10-2) which welcomed a Hahnville (16-3-2) team that entered the night ranked second in power points among Division I teams
“It was huge for us,” said Destrehan head coach Jade Gallaher
It comes down to who wants it more … I think they showed tremendous effort throughout the match
Even our girls on the bench kept the energy going throughout.”
Hahnville head coach Edgar Fuentes said in a Hahnville-Destrehan matchup
you can throw records and seeding out the window
We’ll always give them our best and we know they’ll give their best
We had some missed chances tonight … you’ve got to put the ball in the net,” Fuentes said
The playoff draws for each team were released this week
Hahnville will play Airline at Tiger Stadium today (Jan
The intensity of Friday’s rivalry game was a good primer for each side heading into the playoffs
Destrehan goalkeeper Isabel Fontaine made 12 saves in the match
The freshman said she had some butterflies in her first-ever taste of the Destrehan-Hahnville rivalry clash
I haven’t played in this game … I really saw how much it meant to everyone,” Fontaine said
The adreneline pushed me through … I saved one and after that I felt like
and that of Destrehan’s defense as a whole
Hahnville controlled much of the action in the Destrehan portion of the field
but DHS was able to stave off the threat each time
A header by Olivia Lendle nearly broke the tie
A big save by Fontaine with 18 minutes to go
then a blocked Hahnville shot near the goal with 10 minutes left kept the scoreboard blank
A header in the final minute by Hahnville’s Lauren Oubre was blocked and that was the last real scoring threat by either side in the match
“So much credit to our back line,” said Gallaher
our defensive mids … I can’t commend our defensive effort enough tonight
The Hahnville defense was likewise very strong once again – Friday was its 13th shutout of the season
“That comes down to the team as a whole … we have to work as a team
watch film and prepare for how teams play,” said senior midfielder Taylor Madere
has in a big way been made possible by the way the team’s veteran upperclassmen and up and coming players have meshed together so well and so quickly

each nailed down a perfect score of 36 on the ACT – a feat that will certainly garner them strong attention at the collegiate level
Less than a quarter of a percent of the approximately 1.4 million students who take the test annually achieve the perfect score – while St
Charles Parish has seen a few students in recent years hit the perfect mark
to have two in a year is an extreme and exceptional rarity
is that it came by no accident: both students say they took aim at the goal and put in the work to make it a reality
Reinagel had scores of 33 and 34 in previous years
taking the test as a freshman and a sophomore
“I was specifically aiming for a 36
I was actually on edge for two or three weeks while I was waiting to hear the score
not knowing if I’d get it or just miss it,” said Reinagel
who said he felt good about his effort upon completing the test
“I kind of felt relieved when I saw the score – and very happy the hard work paid off.”
He said he took on a few practice tests to ramp himself up for it and to address any potential shortcomings
He also credited his gifted course teachers for preparing him well for the test
I felt I was overall pretty good at it but lacking in some specifics
so I studied that specifically,” Reinagel said
Reinagel has an eye on studying computer engineering at the next level
“I’ve always had an interest in computers – math related stuff
which is my favorite subject,” Reinagel said
“That’s what I feel I excel at the most.”
He’s a member of the Destrehan band as its low brass section leader
Matherne said his nerves were a bit on edge as he received the email that would relay his score
“36 was one of my goals for the year,” Matherne said
He clicked to read the message and it was certainly to his liking
“There was a lot of shock and excitement (from his family),” said Matherne
they all kind of got the story at the same time
Matherne had posted strong scores in his previous ACT efforts in prior years as well
so he knew the path to a quality effort in this regard
Bridging the gap between a very strong score and the perfect score was where he set his mind to leading up to testing day
“One thing I really worked on was precision – making sure I was very careful
the difference between a 33 or 34 and a 36 is being precise and staying 100 percent focused
and I planned to maintain that focus for the entire time.”
The biggest challenge toward doing that, Matherne said, is that in many ways the ACT tests mental endurance as much as knowledge.
in English you have 75 questions in 45 minutes
the better off you are because that builds the endurance.”
He said his English teacher had students work on a digital reading practice test about a week prior that really helped his cause
“It got me acclimated again to the timing and pacing of the test … that made me more comfortable,” Matherne said
Matherne has been named Student of the Year twice – once at Lakewood Elementary and once at J.B
He is a two-year member of the district honor band and is the assistant captain of the drumline with the Tiger band
He serves as deputy core commander for ROTC and as secretary of Interact
He is also a member of the National Honor Society
but one thing he knows he wants to do once he’s off to the college level is to join his prospective school’s marching band
but it’s something I’m passionate about,” Matherne said
As for advice for fellow students who will be taking the ACT in the future
Matherne echoed that those practice tests are critical
Getting a strong feel for that goes a long way.”
advised staying even keeled through the course of the test and throughout preparation for it
“Try to find where you specifically know you can improve and focus on that more
Set smaller goals for yourself throughout the whole process.”

who scored his second touchdown within the final five minutes of the half

and along with a two-point conversion made it 29-0
Damien Richard added a second half touchdown from 2-yards out – one set up by his longer run a play before – and Jackson Harris added a 28-yard field goal to round out the scoring for Destrehan
Murphy accounted for a pair of scores for ESJ – one a rush and one a pass to Kendall Walker – in the fourth quarter
