But this is no time for a victory lap The Tigers lost starting pitcher Alex Cobb and outfielders Parker Meadows Wenceel Pérez and Matt Vierling during spring training — all four remain on the injured list they've also lost five players from their Opening Day roster to injury: John Brebbia with only Brieske and Torres having returned a spring training injury to Riley Greene derailed the Tigers' momentum and led to one of the most underwhelming seasons in recent memory the Tigers refuse to let the injury bug slow them down on the field the Tigers had a 49-26 record in games Meadows started last season — imagine what this team can do when he becomes eligible to return in late May Javier Báez still has gas in tankJavier Báez — a shortstop-turned-center fielder — is doing things we've never seen from him in the Old English D nearly four years after signing a six-year the 32-year-old is hitting .309 with three home runs and an .829 OPS while contributing plus-3 defensive runs saved across 99 innings in center field Báez posted batting averages of .238 (2022) His 29% swing-and-miss rate and 50.3% swing rate are the lowest marks of his 12-year MLB career Báez is making more contact than ever while swinging less than ever Some underlying metrics — including a .243 expected batting average — suggest his production might not be fully sustainable but the adjustment appears real: He's putting the ball in play more often with fewer swings MORE SEIDEL: Javier Báez impacting Tigers wins, soaring like a bird, cranking homers Three relievers have contributed in the save department: Tommy Kahnle (five) Not only does Kahnle lead the team in saves but he also tops the bullpen with seven games finished The 35-year-old — an 11-year MLB veteran signed to a one-year $7.75 million deal — had never served as a primary closer in his previous 10 seasons He totaled just eight saves across 390 relief appearances — an average of 48.8 outings per save Kahnle already has five saves in just 12 appearances — or one save every 2.4 outings owns a 0.71 ERA with three walks and 12 strikeouts across 12⅔ innings has dropped from 36% in 2024 to 26.6% in 2025 It's mostly weak contact on the ground for now but the increase in balls put in play is something to monitor moving forward Cutting Kenta Maeda sends messagesThe Tigers did what needed to be done removing veteran Kenta Maeda from the roster and eating the final $8 million of his contract $24 million deal — making $14 million in 2024 and $10 million in 2025 There weren't many positives during his Tigers tenure: a 6.09 ERA in 29 games (17 starts) last season followed by a 7.88 ERA in seven relief appearances this season His combined 6.21 ERA ranks last among 123 MLB pitchers with at least 120 innings across the 2024–25 seasons This move — addition by subtraction — sent two clear messages First: President of baseball operations Scott Harris who dished out his first multi-year contract as the Tigers' top decision-maker to sign Maeda won't let a bad deal get in the way of smart baseball decisions Second: The Tigers will move on from players who aren't helping them chase the AL Central crown Contact Evan Petzold at epetzold@freepress.com or follow him @EvanPetzold the Tigers could be in a unique situation ahead of the deadline where they can trade away some of their arms to get pieces in return while also making other deals to upgrade their roster With that in mind, Jon Vankin of Newsweek put together an idea that sees Detroit sending reliever John Brebbia to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for outfielder Brandon Marsh The Phillies have one of the worst bullpens in Major League Baseball and his 1.00 ERA through eight outings this season the Tigers would be getting back a high-upside outfielder who has hit 28 homers and driven in 120 runs during the 2023 and 2024 seasons combined posting an OPS+ figure above the league average of 100 each time It doesn't seem like Detroit needs help in the outfield but by the time things get to that point of the summer Parker Meadows and Wenceel Perez are on the 60-day injured list but the rotator cuff strain he suffered during the spring could pop up again at some point Javier Baez has filled in solidly at center in limited situations but adding a true outfielder like Marsh could be something the Tigers are interested in doing especially since Marsh has two more years of club control remaining Whether or not Detroit and Philadelphia are even interested in this trade isn't clear right now but the Tigers are in a spot where they could ship out some of their arms and get back some interesting roster pieces going forward this season BRAD WAKAI The content on this site is for entertainment and educational purposes Detroit Tigers turnaround is downright offensive That is, it’s their offense leading the charge to a first-place showing and an American League-best 22 wins so far in 2025 after being one of the least productive across MLB in 2024 has developed into one of the best offenses in the league in 2025 courtesy of improved performances by some Tigers mainstays who currently have three fewer wins than the Tigers as of Monday Compare this season’s Tigers offense to last season, which was one of the worst in baseball. In 2024, the Tigers finished second-to-last in on-base percentage (.300), 24th in batting average (.234) and 23rd in team OPS (.685) But one could argue that this turnaround actually started in 2024 the Tigers’ offensive rise is a continuation of the team’s performance following the 2024 trade deadline when the Tigers finished the season with a 34-19 record and a surprise playoff berth The Tigers’ batting average rose from 27th in the league before the July 30 deadline to 13th in the league following the deadline They also raised their on-base percentage from 28th to 15th and their walk rate from 22nd to ninth in the league they’re a top-five offense boasting the AL’s best record What’s remarkable about the Tigers’ run is that the team’s best hitters are all familiar faces from the 2024 squad SEIDEL'S TAKE: Detroit Tigers might not have elite offense, but hitting coaches making it look that way But his breakout may not be the most surprising on the team That title could belong to Torkelson who in just 35 games has already hit as many home runs (10) as he hit in 92 games in 2024 which could come as a surprise since he entered spring training not knowing if he would play a key role on the team or even make the team As for Carpenter and Greene? They’re continuing to mash, contributing to an offense that scored 34 runs in its recent four-game series against the Los Angeles Angels And it’s not just the usual suspects: Dillon Dingler Andy Ibáñez and Jake Rogers are all sporting a respective OPS above league average giving the Tigers more than a lineup’s worth of hitters currently outpacing a typical major leaguer The only significant offseason lineup addition is also holding his own with an .826 OPS and four home runs in 22 games It’s as if this year’s lineup got a makeover using the same brushes from last year But it’s a logjam the first-place Tigers will take Even if this offense experiences some natural regression as the season plays out more than enough bats have emerged to turn this Tigers lineup into one of the league’s scariest You can reach Christian atcromo@freepress.com A Michigan State Police trooper was injured and one person died in a shooting early Monday on Detroit's west side troopers in the MSP Auto Theft team were involved in a shooting with an individual while conducting an investigation in the area of Trojan Avenue and Murray Hill Street the agency's Second District reported on X a 23-year-old male suspect from Detroit jumped out of a vehicle firing rounds at troopers The injured trooper was transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital for treatment and listed in critical condition The Homicide Task Force is handling the investigation State police did not release further details blocking off Trojan Avenue and Murray Hill Street they towed the suspect's vehicle from their home at 20200 Murray Hill Authorities also knocked on the doors of Murray Hill residents to ask about the incident Several relatives and friends of the suspect were on the scene said he was surprised his friend of several years was out at 4 a.m and wasn't sure how the incident led to the Murray Hill resident's death "How did this happen in front of his house?" According to Michigan State Police, troopers assigned to its auto theft team were involved, and a 23-year-old Detroit man was killed during the exchange of gunfire. Dameka Gray said she learned that her cousin was shot and killed after her aunt called her screaming. “I just ran out of the house and ran to her,” Gray said. “He was a sweetheart.” “Go talk to your people while they’re here,” she said while fighting through tears. “It’s not a good feeling. It’s not.” Tony Hunter spoke with Local 4 regarding his younger brother’s death. “He looked up to me, I looked up to him,” he said. “He didn’t do no wrong.” He said his brother was sitting on the front porch of their home when an unmarked police car pulled up. “My little brother called my name; he called for me to come out,” Hunter recalled. “As soon as I started running, all I hear is gunshots.” Hunter said his brother is not the type to pull out a gun and shoot at police. “That’s not my brother. That’s not him,” he said. “These cops came unmarked, no vests,” he continued. He said police didn’t announce who they were until after they shot at his brother. “They waited until my little brother was already laid out in the middle of the street to go put a vest on,” Hunter said. “We’re definitely going to get justice for this,” Hunter’s sister said. “Justice for my brother. Long live my brother.” The man’s family said he was a night owl, “a protector,” and would often stay up late. “He watches over his family,” a family member said. During a press conference on May 5, just after 8 a.m., Michigan State Police said troopers were working undercover in the area when the 23-year-old man came out of a house and allegedly shot three times at the troopers. State troopers returned fire, killing the Detroit man. A trooper was shot in the leg and back. The trooper shot was transported to Detroit Receiving Hospital for treatment. Police told Local 4 the trooper is expected to be okay. Copyright 2025 by WDIV ClickOnDetroit - All rights reserved. players to keep an eye on as the Lions continue to work their way through the offseason training program Which new Lion are you most excited to see hit the field in 2025 The reaction in the draft room by the Lions brass when they were able to select Tyleik Williams at No 28 tells me he was the player they targeted and really wanted His quickness for a player with his size and strength traits is really intriguing I think there's more there as an interior pass rusher than he was asked to do at Ohio State My guess is he carves out an early role and it will really be exciting to watch him once acquisition is done. There will still likely be a signing or two before training camp, but what you see with the Lions 2025 depth chart is pretty much what you’re going to get this season we’re taking inventory of the entire roster And where do they still need to ensure they find long-term solutions we dip our toe into the spots on the 53-man roster that are still up for grabs While the core of this team is stronger and deeper than ever S3—that will be won and lost in training camp And there are even a few starting positions (see: guard) that will be determined in the upcoming months but to also underline that this Lions roster is robust But in terms of the amount of blue-chip players and shrinking amount of needs from 1 to 53 You can listen to our entire assessment of the Lions roster in the embedded player below or on any of your favorite podcasting platforms If you’d rather watch the PODcast—with plenty of in-between segments bonus content, you can check out this week’s show on YouTube or Twitch Darnold proceeded to put together a career-best campaign leading the Vikings to a wild-card postseason berth Darnold is now gone, though, after signing with the Seattle Seahawks earlier this offseason. Thus, Kevin O’Connell will be riding with McCarthy under center in 2025 I don’t envision Minnesota replicating its success from a season ago Without further ado, here's a look at where the Vikings stand headed into the ‘25 campaign 2024 record: 14-3 (second place in NFC North; lost in wild card round to L.A The Lions took care of business against the Vikings twice last season effectively keeping O’Connell’s squad out of first place a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs Head coach: Kevin O'Connell (Fourth season: 34-17) The Vikings made a concerted effort to upgrade the interior of both their defensive and offensive lines this offseason Minnesota acquired both Allen and Hargrave with the intent to upgrade its pass-rushing efforts from the interior the organization added Fries and Kelly in an attempt to boost its pass-protection efforts along the interior These signings should help the Vikings stay in the mix in an ultra competitive NFC North in 2025 EDGE Patrick Jones II (signed with Panthers)  C Garrett Bradbury (released; signed with Patriots) The Vikings experienced more notable acquisitions than notable losses, which should bode well for the franchise headed into the 2025 season. The team’s most impactful departure, by far, will be the loss of Darnold in free agency Darnold experienced a career-best campaign in 2024, throwing for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns, en route to leading Minnesota to a 14-win season. It was an improbable season for the career journeyman signal-caller, who will be replaced by McCarthy If the Vikings have any chance of replicating their success from last season, they will need McCarthy to be productive in his first taste of NFL action Pick 139 (from Browns) - Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins The Vikings ended up making just five selections this past April the first two could end up being rather impactful this upcoming season Minnesota beefed up the interior of its offensive line with the selection of Jackson who should compete for reps at left guard from day one He should aid the Vikings in their efforts to keep McCarthy upright in 2025 and beyond Additionally, in drafting Felton the Vikings acquired a pass-catcher who has the ability to make an instant impact in the team’s receivers room The Vikings won’t be able to sneak up on teams and surprise anybody this upcoming season And now they’ll also have to fend off the up-and-coming Bears I expect Minnesota to be competitive once again in 2025. However, I don’t expect O’Connell’s team to repeat as runners-up in the NFC North. pitching for them This prosperity is built on some compelling turnarounds: Former No. 1 overall picks Casey Mize and Spencer Torkelson are playing up to their potential 1 overall in 2018 - posting a 2.70 ERA and winning five of his six starts has already equaled his 10-homer output from 2024 and has an .889 OPS Meanwhile, veteran Javy Baez whose $140 million contract looked like dead weight is having a fine rebirth as a center fielder batting .309 with an .829 OPS and equaling defensive stalwarts like Byron Buxton and Tyrone Taylor with three outs above average in center While the expected three-team race in the AL Central looks like a reality the Tigers' pace-setting creates an early expectation that for the second consecutive year multiple playoff berths will come out of the once-moribund division cold and worries about immigration crackdowns the community of southwest Detroit celebrated Mexican culture with its annual Cinco de Mayo parade The event kicked off at the intersection of Vernor and Woodmere as the sounds of Latin music filled the air and Mexican flags breezed across a lineup of cars and trucks at the start of the parade This year represents a milestone for the Cinco de Mayo Parade as attendees marked the 60th year of celebrating Mexican heritage community and resilience in southwest Detroit and inviting attendees from across the state and beyond Maybe it was due to the weather or fear from the tense political climate business owners and community members noticed that fewer people attended this year's festivities compared to previous years Though an organizer estimated the parade crowd to be about 8,000 eager to celebrate and pass along the tradition to future generations noticed a different tone at the parade this year which she attributes to the Trump administration‘s policies “It’s usually more cheerful and I’ve been to the parade in the rain before.” She came to the parade from Warren with her husband because she felt it was more important this year than ever to show up grandparents and others of older generations — decided not to attend for the first time ever “I’m here to represent and stand here for my people The here," Hernandez a store on West Vernor selling hand crafted boots 30-year-old Noel Morales said he's been watching the parade since he was 4 years old when he moved from Mexico to southwest Detroit It's a tradition he wants to pass on to future generations we use it in Detroit as far as us celebrating our culture but showing the new generations a little bit of something about where we come from Maybe they haven't had an opportunity to go home and visit so that's what they're seeing here," he said under an awning protecting him from the rain he lived in southwest Detroit but this is only his second time attending the Cinco de Mayo parade He anticipated fewer people would attend because of the intimidation and fear he says the Trump administration has instilled in many community members “Even those that follow the law perfectly,” Hernández said in Spanish “There will be less people who want to expose themselves.” Hernández said he sees the parade as more than a daylong celebration The theme of rebellion was apparent during the event One car displayed a green poster taped to a side window that read: “DERROTAR DONALD TRUMP,” which translates to Defeat Donald Trump which has participated in the parade since 1985 Detroit national coordinator for the organization said part of the group's mission is to defend immigrant rights and stop the administration's attack on immigrants Local leaders in Philadelphia and Chicago canceled their parades In Detroit, there was disagreement among community leaders about whether the parade should go on, with some saying the risk of gathering publicly is too great amid the Trump administration's immigration crackdown But one organizer said the thought of canceling the parade was never considered And canceling would ignore those who want to celebrate Latino heritage a business owner in southwest Detroit and board chair of the Southwest Detroit Business Association said she was torn on the idea of canceling this year’s event just because we want to be sensitive to the undocumented and those who fear ICE deportation,” Patino said “But at the same time our businesses in this business corridor have suffered tremendously just from the lack of patrons being in their stores And so events like this draw people outside of the community.” Contact Nushrat Rahman: nrahman@freepress.com. The score was tied 1-1 when Greene, facing Angels closer Kenley Jansen led off the ninth with a 371-foot homer off the top of the right-field wall Colt Keith followed with a homer to left-center for a 2-1 lead, Jace Jung singled with one out, and Javier Báez hit a two-out giving the Tigers' center fielder home runs in three straight games The Tigers, who have an American League-best 21-12 record, weren't through. Kerry Carpenter singled, Zach McKinstry doubled and Carpenter scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-1 Spencer Torkelson walked, giving Greene a shot at history, and the cleanup man seized the moment, crushing a 409-foot homer to right-center off left-hander Jake Eder for a 9-1 lead Greene is the first Tigers player to hit two homers in an inning since Magglio Ordonez did so in the second inning against the Oakland Athletics on Aug The only other Tigers player to homer twice in an inning is Hall of Famer Al Kaline against the Kansas City A's on April 17 and he asks for more," Detroit manager A.J "You want guys to be rewarded when they work as hard as they do Greene joined the Angels' Jo Adell as the only players to hit multiple homers in an inning this season. According to the oddsmakers, Detroit was supposed to win about 25 games this season. The Pistons hit that mark on February 2 … and they just kept going more than tripling their total from the prior season “We’ve overcome a ton of obstacles,” Bickerstaff said ahead-of-schedule pals were celebrating a 106-103 road victory confident they’d take Game 6 at home and earn a return trip to the Garden The joyride ended with a thud in Detroit Thursday night with the Pistons losing a seven-point lead in the final 2:35 throwing the ball away on their final possession “We felt good about this series,” Cunningham told reporters after the game In the NBA, the breakthrough is always the fun part. Not the easy part, to be clear—after all, Detroit has been waiting 20 years for a team like this—but certainly the most exhilarating. Pistons fans got to watch Cunningham make the leap from promising to dominant and Ausar Thompson from tantalizing to fearsome They got to revel in one of the best feel-good stories of the season—and the promise of a bright new era (Say it with me: DEEE-TROIIIT BASKETBALLL!)  The Pistons are here and must be reckoned with Their three best players are all 23 or younger and crackling with potential Cunningham should make one of the (soon to be announced) All-NBA teams Thompson is already one of the league’s premier defenders Duren is a powerful paint presence who at 21 is just starting to grasp his role All three shined against the Knicks in high-pressure situations (and without the help of the injured Jaden Ivey and Isaiah Stewart) Now comes the thornier part: managing expectations while trying to make the next leap A young team on the rise is expected to keep rising to go from 40-something wins to 50-something And there’s nothing more dangerous than an antsy owner who believes that his young team has arrived As one rival team executive said earlier this week 1 job” of the Pistons front office now is “to convince [owner] Tom Gores that they’re not knocking on the door Don’t go doing something stupid just because you had a good year Ah yes, Atlanta, our latest cautionary tale of hubris and impatience in the East. Four years ago, the Hawks were the NBA’s breakthrough darlings riding Trae Young’s audacious shooting and playmaking to a 41-31 record and a stunning run to the Eastern Conference finals with victories over the Knicks (4-1) and the Philadelphia 76ers (4-3) along the way The Hawks lost in six games to the (eventual champion) Milwaukee Bucks it might have been the worst thing to happen to them After a respectable 43-win season and a first-round loss to Miami in 2022 Owner Tony Ressler publicly chastised his team citing “complacency across this organization.” That summer general manager Travis Schlenk responded by making an all-in questionable trade for San Antonio Spurs guard Dejounte Murray—a deal that cost the Hawks three first-round picks and a pick swap Ressler canned Schlenk and replaced him with Landry Fields The Hawks’ playoff results since that magical run in 2021 They are no closer to title contention now than they were in 2021 The same curse of unreasonable expectations and owner delusion torpedoed another young, frisky team in Sacramento. The Kings had their breakthrough two years ago, with a 48-win campaign and their first playoff appearance in 17 years They had the Coach of the Year (Mike Brown) the Clutch Player of the Year (De’Aaron Fox) and the Executive of the Year (Monte McNair) that season He fired Brown last December and parted with McNair in April and in between he signed off on a trade of the disillusioned Fox the Kings are demonstrably worse off than they were in 2023 Patience isn’t easy to come by in today’s NBA but the best franchises know when to exercise it resisted calls to make a blockbuster trade The defending champion Boston Celtics stuck with their young core through every twist and turn So how will the Pistons handle their newfound success Will they depart the playoffs happy with their thrilling Rival executives speak highly of Trajan Langdon who just completed his first season as Detroit’s president of basketball operations and of his staff—in particular Dennis Lindsey a veteran team executive who played a key role in the Dallas Mavericks’ rise The Pistons also have strong leadership bridging the basketball and business sides with former superagent Arn Tellem running the club as vice chairman who had held secondary front office roles in New Orleans and Brooklyn had a strong debut as the chief decision-maker in Detroit who finished as runner-up for Sixth Man of the Year; landed Tobias Harris who proved to be the steady vet the young Pistons needed; and traded for Tim Hardaway Jr. who gave the Pistons some experience and scoring punch and proved invaluable when the team lost young guard Ivey to a broken leg in January who instantly gave the Pistons an added defensive edge Langdon also replaced coach Monty Williams (after one disastrous season) with Bickerstaff who instilled a sense of unity and purpose and is a favorite to win Coach of the Year the Pistons have decisions to make about three key vets—Beasley They might be able to retain only two of the three But they’ll also benefit from the return of Ivey and Stewart and the continued growth of Cunningham the Pistons could crack the top four in the East soon “They’re a serious threat,” said another rival executive Now comes the temptation—to accelerate the process to make a swing-for-the-fences trade for the next disillusioned star The rival execs we spoke to earlier this week were consistent in their advice: Don’t offensively versatile big man to complement Duren and Stewart an athletic scorer who might not fit with the current group “To me it would be too early to make a decision” on what Detroit should add Does Jaden Ivey learn how to play basketball I would not combine assets to go get [another player] “If I was leading the Pistons,” said the second exec “I would just play one more year the way it is The owner, of course, might see things differently. Gores addressed the media just before Game 6 on Thursday and invoked the one word that could send shudders through any front office “The Pistons should have already won the series,” the first rival exec said before Game 6. “They’re a tough team.” The Gores era, which began in 2011, has been jagged to say the least. He’s on his sixth head of basketball ops and his seventh head coach. There have been too many restarts, rebuilds, and pivots to count. On the court, the young Pistons have repeatedly proved to be steady, resilient, and brimming with confidence. They’re evolving, maturing before our eyes. The question now is: Has the owner done the same? At the time Johnson had been AC/DC's singer for 36 years ever since replacing the late Bon Scott in 1980 and making his debut on the classic "Back In Black" album To enable him to perform live with AC/DC again the now-77-year-old Johnson worked with audio expert Stephen Ambrose who said he could help resolve the singer's hearing problems who invented the wireless in-ear monitors that are widely used by touring artists today claimed to have invented a new type of ear-bud that would allow Johnson to perform without causing further damage to his eardrums After three years of experimenting and "miniaturizing" the equipment Johnson previously said the technology could allow him to tour again Chaney is best known as the bassist of JANE'S ADDICTION and as a member of Alanis Morissette's touring and recording band Chaney was also a member of TAYLOR HAWKINS AND THE COATTAIL RIDERS and CAMP FREDDY as well as being a prolific and versatile session musician having played with artists including Joe Cocker Chaney is also a founding member and partner in the all-star supergroup ROYAL MACHINES along with Dave Navarro (JANE'S ADDICTION),Mark McGrath (SUGAR RAY),Josh Freese (FOO FIGHTERS) and Billy Morrison (BILLY IDOL) Bassist Cliff Williams announced his retirement at the end of AC/DC's 2015-2016 "Rock Or Bust" tour Williams — and Johnson — took part in the recording sessions that resulted in "Power Up" Both of them were also part of the AC/DC lineup that performed at Power Trip During an October 2020 interview with Dean Delray's "Let There Be Talk" podcast Cliff was asked if Johnson's departure from the road was what led to his desire to stop touring I was at a point — and this is at the beginning of the 'Rock Or Bust' tour — that I just felt I knew that I didn't wanna keep doing these two-year tours so I made them aware of the fact that this was gonna be my last go-round God bless Axl for coming in and helping us out he wanted to take part in the recording sessions for "Power Up" as a tribute to Angus's late brother founding AC/DC rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young who died in 2017 from effects of dementia at age 64 Malcolm is credited as a writer on all 12 tracks on "Power Up" "If 'Back In Black' has [late AC/DC singer] Bon Scott all over it 'Power Up' has got Malcolm Young," Cliff said And it's the band that we played together with for 40-plus years And I wanted to do that — I wanted to come back and do that "We did some rehearsals earlier [in 2020] before this darn COVID thing popped up and we had great rehearsals," he continued Everyone goes home to their respective homes we've been here ever since [because of the coronavirus-related shutdown]." Cliff went on to confirm that his commitment to AC/DC was only for "a few" dates in support of "Power Up" "For both [my mental and physical] health," he said which I won't bore you with the details of Williams previously revealed that a "terrible" bout with vertigo contributed to his 2016 retirement He also admitted the return of both Johnson and drummer Phil Rudd convinced him to rejoin the group "It was like the old band back together," he told Rolling Stone but as close to the band that's been together for 40-plus years as we can possibly make it "Power Up" was recorded over a six-week period in August and September 2018 at Warehouse Studios in Vancouver with producer Brendan O'Brien who also worked 2008's "Black Ice" and "Rock Or Bust" securing a 3-1 series win at Angel Stadium This decisive win followed a 5-2 loss on Saturday where the Tigers' offense struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities with Trey Sweeney leading the charge by collecting four hits and driving in six runs Kerry Carpenter and Colt Keith each added home runs contributing to the team's season-high run total Reese Olson delivered 5.2 scoreless innings allowing just three hits and striking out eight effectively stifling the Angels' lineup Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Reese Olson (45) Detroit's strong offensive performance has been instrumental in its recent success propelling them to a 22-13 record and maintaining its position atop the American League Central division.  the Tigers took to social media to announce a historic achievement—the team has now hit 20 home runs over their last seven games—their most in any seven-game stretch since September 2004 Detroit will resume action against the Colorado Rockies, aiming to extend its winning streak. The Angels, meanwhile, will host the Seattle Mariners seeking to reverse their fortunes and climb out of the division cellar About a year before his bar mitzvah in 1977 Jeffrey Seller was in Hebrew class at Temple Israel synagogue when the teacher in the midst of talking about the history of the Warsaw Ghetto asked whether anyone knew a place in America that had similarly poor conditions so the teacher gave the example of a nearby Oak Park neighborhood behind an A&P grocery story on 9 Mile not made of bricks and had no basements and garages “There’s a colloquial name for it,” he said “Theater Kids,” he was afraid that someone would find out he lived there trying to resist the formation of tears behind my eyes hoping I would not be discovered,” he writes Seller says that this was one of the most difficult vignettes to put down on paper for the book who would be sad to know about Seller’s reaction The idea that any of the students at Temple Israel could possibly have lived in that neighborhood was so far beyond his comprehension.” Seller is scheduled to kick off his book tour May 6 at the Berman Center for the Performing Arts in West Bloomfield as part of the Detroit Jewish Film Festival He will be in conversation that evening with another Detroit native Tony nominee Douglas Sills of HBO's "The Gilded Age." Seller says it is fitting for him to return to the suburbs of Detroit for the event because that is "the place in which the whole book starts." “Theater Kid” (subtitled "A Broadway Memoir") is the coming-of-age and career success story of Sellers who grew up to become an icon of contemporary musical theater as a producer of the Tony Award-winning shows “Rent,” “Avenue Q,” “In the Heights” and “Hamilton.” The productions that Sellers has overseen have accumulated 22 Tony wins earned a gross of $4.6 billion from the Broadway productions and subsequent tours and drawn more 43 million audience members Seller is recognized as the only producer with two Pulitzer Prize-winning musicals to his credit “Rent” and “Hamilton,” both of which were groundbreaking cultural achievements With "Rent," he also helped create a discounted ticket lottery to make his musicals more affordable for a wider audience Simon & Schuster," "Theater Kid" reveals Seller's early years as “a kid coming to terms with his adoption and determined to escape his dysfunctional household in a poor neighborhood just outside Detroit.”  What sets the memoir apart from other works about a difficult childhood that fuels a determination for better future is Seller’s approach He writes "Theater Kid" with the vividness of a graphic novel sometimes explicit about his sexual awakening fearless about revealing his family's chaos and conflicts and yet filled with love for even his volatile father “Theater Kid” reads like the autobiography of someone who has lived with hard truths and made peace with them through his artistry “I don’t know that the world needed another memoir about being poor We’ve had a lot of those,” says Seller during a phone interview “What I thought the world needed at this moment was the only way that I thought to justify it is to go all the way into the core of my insecurities and deepest feelings and expose me as nakedly as I could Because I thought that would illuminate the story in a way that makes it an alumnus of Oak Park High School and the University of Michigan which is fitting given how many of the anecdotes seem like scenes from one of his Broadway hits Act One is mostly about his family and his school years Act Two covers his move to New York City and his experiences with “Rent.” Act Three includes the journey of “Hamilton” and Seller’s search for his biological parents a quest that “wouldn’t stop chasing me as I passed forty years old and became a parent of two beautiful adopted children.” Seller was captivated by theater and absorbed everything he could about it from the Tony Awards on TV to touring productions at the Fisher Theatre and cast albums of Broadway hits He was a sponge for learning the process of creating and staging shows whether he was acting with Royal Oak’s Stagecrafters youth troupe singing in the children’s chorus of “Carmen” with Michigan Opera Theatre or working as the drama director at Camp Tamarack in northern Oakland County during summer college breaks An early chapter recalls his pivotal moment of winning a role in fourth grade as a sailor in the annual Purim play at Temple Israel (then located in Detroit which was a mashup of the story of Queen Esther and the musical “South Pacific." Recalling the magical process of rehearsing and performing he writes: “Being in a play for the first time makes me happy Being in a play changes my life; I am filled with purpose for the first time.” Seller was devoted to learning more about the basics of the craft that would make him famous He recalls appearing in eighth grade in a Stagecrafters production of a children’s play called “Popcorn Pete” and noticing that “one the audiences were very small.” Seller asked who chose “Popcorn Pete” and found out that there was a play-reading committee 'I want to be on the play-reading committee.' That was my first leap into producing," he notes Seller is generous about thanking his various teachers and mentors for their support (He titles one chapter “Miss Shively” after a Frost Middle School teacher.) But while his world was opening up on the stage left with brain damage after a devastating motorcycle accident occasionally served court papers and summonses and later took up a side gig performing as a clown His mother worked steadily at a drugstore to support them When his father lost his temper at their Cardboard Village house with no basement for tornado protection "he is like another tornado from which we cannot hide." Seller looks back on his dad's bad choices with compassion "My father was a man not in control of himself The consequences of which resulted in two bankruptcies and a tremendous amount of pain and suffering" this was also the man who said the same four words to me over and over any time I asked if I could go to an audition or rehearsal or a new place 'Get in the car.' He drove me to every one of those auditions and every one of those rehearsals.” Asked how long it took to write the memoir Seller says it was somewhere between five and 30 years He elaborates by explaining that he struggled with putting his memories on the page It took about five years to complete the book but two of the childhood tales it includes are from a writing class he attended at New York City's New School in the 1990s He says he followed one guide while writing the book and that was being truthful "I was always guided first by the truth and I thought we’ll deal with everybody else’s feelings later.” Such transparency “was essential to the existence of the book,” according to Seller because he wrote it "in so many ways for younger people particularly for young gay men who don’t know anything about what they’re about to encounter.” it will affirm their feelings and show them that they’re going to figure it out He says he deeply wanted to share "Theater Kid" with his mother who passed away about a year ago from pancreatic cancer really looked forward to sharing it with my mom it would stir up a lot of painful memories for her and that it would stir up her own sense of shame and guilt but it would also activate her pride and her love,” he says I didn’t talk about it because I didn’t know if it would ever be published anyway I wrote it for me without regard to its ultimate destiny.” Seller dedicates the book to the memory of his mother and father who calls southeast Michigan an essential part of American arts is spending a lot of time in the Motor City with “my new partner in life and love,” Yuval Sharon the acclaimed artistic director of Detroit Opera “How lucky am I that my own hometown of Detroit helped me come together with the new love of my life,” he says a Detroit Opera board of directors vice chair and former publisher of Crain's Detroit Business to teach a course in politics and theater at the University of Michigan once a week during the fall semester Speaking of politics, Seller is still immersed in the intersection between it and "Hamilton." Recounted in "Theater Kid" is the behind-the-scenes story of the time Vice President-elect Mike Pence attended the show in 2016 It was Seller who wrote the first draft of a short speech that actor Brandon Victor Dixon ended up reading from the stage to Pence at the end of the performance It addressed concerns regarding the Trump administration's commitment to upholding "our inalienable rights" and shared the hope that "this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us." Given the imprint that "Hamilton" and "Rent" have made on the evolution of theater, it's fair to ask: Does Seller have some sort of zeitgeist meter that can sense when musicals are going to be transformative? ”I am just following my heart and hoping that others are affected by my shows in the same way I am,” he insists “I don’t know what the zeitgeist will be tomorrow. I only know what thrills me, surprises me and pleases me. I just try to make the show that will please me the most and then am lucky when it pleases thousands, or tens of thousands, or in the case of 'Hamilton' or 'Rent,' millions of others as well.” Seller says his faith in the future of art is steadfast. “I always have faith in the next generation to innovate and to bring forth, ingenuity and creativity and new ways of looking at the confusing world in which we live.” Being a producer seeps into everything that Seller does, he concedes, from planning an impromptu brunch to making decisions for the audio version of “Theater Kid.” Although the custom for authors is to read their memoirs in their entiretly, he says he didn't want to just hear his own voice. Instead, he gathered a cast that includes Seller, "Hamilton" star and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, and actors Darren Criss, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renee Elise Goldsberry, among several others, to play different characters. Says Seller, “The audiobook is kind of like a stage reading. … I couldn't resist." Contact Detroit Free Press pop culture critic Julie Hinds at jhinds@freepress.com. Detroit also had the chance to go with the “best player available” option but ultimately decided on Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams The Detroit Lions had plenty of options when they went on the clock with the 28th overall pick in the NFL Draft. The Lions needed help in the secondary, but also needed an edge rusher to team with Aidan Hutchinson The pick was criticized by some who wanted Detroit to stop the fall of Michigan cornerback Will Johnson. Warning: this story contains description of a suicide attempt The road that leads to the Ambassador Bridge perennial construction in the vicinity doesn't help and often Detroiters accidentally drive onto it and into a Customs and Border Protection area for immigrants without legal status a wrong turn onto the bridge can devolve into a nightmare: Days on end in detention in facilities alleged to be unfit for children A news conference on Thursday held by Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center and the ACLU of Michigan detailed findings about the bridge and a nearby CBP office space Tlaib reported she was told that since January 213 people have been detained at the bridge At least 90% of the detentions were people who made a wrong turn and drove onto the bridge by accident Tlaib said "our neighbors and family should not be disappearing because of a wrong turn." Tlaib says CBP told her that 40 of the detainees were "known Tren de Aragua," Venezuelan gang members Of those detained there have been a dozen families - one family was held for 12 days Lawyers with the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center say they do not currently know the whereabouts of the children Tlaib also says that CBP officials also informed her about a suicide attempt at a nearby detention site on the same border: A Venezuelan man who had been held there for three days was in a holding cell when officers observed him trying to hang himself and intervened The man was taken to the hospital and later brought back and then handed over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement The Michigan Immigrant Rights Center says they do not know the man's whereabouts or condition In March a Guatemalan woman who was held in detention near the Ambassador bridge with her two young American citizen children She requested NPR withhold her last name because she is in the U.S Sarahi had accidentally driven onto the Ambassador Bridge while en route to Costco and she was arrested by immigration officials and taken to an office building nearby According to Ruby Robinson of the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center Sarahi was being held in a CBP office building next to the Ambassador Bridge a building that is now being used for detention Sarahi says what followed her arrest "felt like a kidnapping." She told NPR that her family was placed in a windowless office space near the bridge she said they were given no access to a lawyer told to sleep on cots without proper accommodations for the children (no diapers or appropriate food) NPR has been receiving tips about immigrants and their children detained at the office space by the Ambassador Bridge for months – people who accidentally drive onto the toll plaza as well as migrants seeking asylum in Canada who are turned back and end up detained in these office spaces for extended periods of time But lawyers with the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center and ACLU of Michigan were unable to locate people in detention or who had been held there senior staff attorney with the ACLU of Michigan said detentions at the site had been "a complete blackhole of information." She also stated that "it is naive to think that if we tolerate incommunicado detentions for non-citizens the government won't be doing the same for citizens." A major concern lawyers and immigration advocates have raised is that this facility is simply not meant for long term detention Sarahi spoke of a windowless room with cots When her daughter's fever started rising and she asked for medication Tlaib says CBP told her that holding families in this area was a "brand new situation," which had not been done during previous administrations Tlaib says she was shown a supply room with diapers Sarahi told NPR she was not given access to a lawyer for nearly six days Tlaib says that CBP told her that there are no secure private areas for attorneys to meet with clients Last week the ACLU of Michigan and the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center placed a Freedom of Information Act request for further information about conditions and detainees who have been held near the bridge If you have immigration tips you can contact our tip line, on Whatsapp and Signal: 202-713-6697 or reporter Jasmine Garsd: jgarsd@npr.org   If you or someone you know is considering suicide call or text 988 to reach the suicide and crisis hotline Become an NPR sponsor Please enable JS and disable any ad blocker reportedly went the wrong way while delivering a food order in January in Detroit "What we're seeing is one wrong turn at the Detroit bridge — the Ambassador Bridge — can result in your loved one disappearing," Christine Sauve, the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center's communications coordinator told the Free Press There now appears to be scant official information about Prada, prompting an investigation by the New York Times which first published details of his case on Tuesday under the headline "An Immigrant Held in U.S Prada's plight is the latest twist in an intensifying showdown between two branches of government the executive and judiciary: A federal judge has ordered other deportations to be reversed because of inadequate due process Herman Dhade, the president of the Detroit Immigration Law Firm in West Bloomfield said he has had clients temporarily detained at the Ambassador bridge because they got turned around "You see the danger to arbitrarily say people are affiliated with a gang and being able to deport them is dangerous "a new level of disarray in the immigration system," and poses the question whether others are facing similar situations The reason for the information "black hole," the Immigrant Rights Center said is that immigrants are being held at detention centers for days at a time something that the system wasn't set up to do What's more, for immigrants seeking asylum through the CBP One — Customs and Border Protection — mobile app that allows individuals to enter the United States before their claims were vetted it appears to be a warning to avoid any mishaps "Ricardo’s story by itself is incredibly tragic," Ben Levey, a staff attorney with the National Immigrant Justice Center based in Chicago adding that "we don’t know how many Ricardos there are." Video surfaced of underage people inside the Legendary Sting strip club in the 6600 block of Michigan Avenue on Detroit’s west side, according to authorities. A mother called police after finding cellphone footage of her child partying with other children -- some as young as 14 years old, officials report. Detroit police executed a search warrant Wednesday at the strip club and took all videos and recording equipment related to the case, they said. “Let me be clear: We will not tolerate this in the city of Detroit -- not at this establishment or any other establishment,” Detroit police Chief Todd Bettison said. “So to party promotors or anybody: If you’re going to have parties and entice our children into establishments and venues that are meant for adults, we will use every aspect of city government, the law department, the Wayne County prosecutor, etc., to shut you down.” No arrests have been made, but police said they’re closely watching the party promoter responsible for the underage event. He finished second for Sixth Man of the Year honors while averaging the third-most points on the team (16.3) Beasley also made the second-most 3-pointers in the league this season with 319 triples trailing only Minnesota's Anthony Edwards (320) His production took a slight decline during the playoffs where he shot 33.9% from behind the arc while averaging 14.0 points Beasley's postseason performance should not cloud his future with the franchise Beasley will become a free agent this offseason after signing a one-year deal last summer Re-signing the veteran guard should be a top priority He played a crucial role in the Pistons' success and served as an essential veteran leader for the young core According to ESPN Beasley's non-Bird rights will allow Detroit to re-sign him to a contract starting at just over $7 million Given the number of teams that likely will come knocking in an attempt to improve their shooting the price will probably have to be raised for the Pistons to have a chance to keep Beasley in the Motor City Jalen Duren said it best: "This is the worst version of Cade Cunningham you are going to see." In a season where several young prospects established themselves as prominent players one can argue that Cunningham took the most sensational leap In his most healthy season since entering the league in 2021 Cunningham finally had a chance to demonstrate the star potential that made him the No He set career highs in all statistical categories while recording the fifth-most triple-doubles in the league at nine Cunningham also made significant improvements on defense where he averaged 1.8 steals and 1.3 blocks While approaching his first All-NBA selection turnovers were the only knock against the All-Star guard The issue was a constant problem throughout the regular season (4.4) and slightly worsened in the playoffs By the time the Pistons were eliminated in six games Improvements to his game this summer could result in Cunningham becoming an MVP-caliber player in his fifth season Hardaway joined the Pistons in July in salary cap relief for the Dallas Mavericks he had become one of the biggest factors in the Pistons' turnaround He kept the team afloat during its early struggles shooting 45.7% on 3-pointers through the first dozen games Hardaway cooled off a bit as the season progressed his most significant contributions came when leading Detroit to a handful of victories when the team was shorthanded due to injuries His best game of the season was in the Pistons' 133-122 win over Cleveland where he scored a season-high 32 points while Cunningham Hardaway continued his solid performance in the playoffs He is one of three core players entering free agency this summer and re-signing the former Michigan product should be one of Detroit's top priorities Ivey's offseason training will focus on his rehabilitation He is expected to be ready by early October just in time for the start of training camp Ivey is one of two Pistons eligible for a contract extension this summer He likely will be awarded a new deal based on his performance prior to his injury Jenkins has only played seven games with the Pistons and has logged a total of 23 minutes. However, he performed impressively during his G League outings Jenkins averaged 21.2 points on 43.9% shooting from the field with 7.1 assists and 1.9 steals — establishing himself as the Pistons' top two-way prospect Sasser's second year was a slight disappointment. However, his lack of production this season was due to the tight rotation Bickerstaff used, which resulted in him recording 24 DNPs. When called upon, Sasser was a reliable shot-creator and solid defender as his contributions off the bench helped in a handful of regular-season wins It was somewhat surprising Bickerstaff did not use Sasser at any point during the postseason After Ivey broke his leg on Jan. 1, Bickerstaff revealed that Schröder was a key trade target for the Pistons. The same sense of urgency that drove the Pistons to land his services from the Golden State Warriors in February should be repeated this summer Schröder is one of three rotational players who will be free agents and management should do everything possible to bring the veteran point guard back to Detroit He served as a reliable floor general during the second half of the season which was a need even before Ivey's injury Schröder also kept Detroit competitive during the playoffs averaging 12.5 points on 47.6% shooting from deep and 3.7 assists After landing Waters in the same trade that netted the Pistons Schröder Bickerstaff did not use Waters in his rotation He only received meaningful playing time during Detroit's season finale against Milwaukee where Waters scored 18 points with six triples in the overtime loss Frontcourt▶ Simone Fontecchio — Stats: 5.9 PPG Perhaps it was the ongoing recovery from toe surgery that sidelined him for much of the offseason he started to find a rhythm that made him a reliable reserve during the second half which featured a 23-point performance against New Orleans on March 17 Fontecchio would not have made much of a difference in the Pistons' first-round series against the Knicks it was surprising that Bickerstaff cut him from his postseason rotation due to his ability to create more floor spacing A season finale road contest against the Bucks on April 13 marked the only game Harper appeared in for Detroit He spent the season playing in the G-League Harris is the only player who can challenge Beasley as the Pistons' best acquisition from the previous summer. He met all of the expectations he came into the season with as a veteran who is still producing at a high level. He was essential in Detroit's revival as a two-way go-to option and he put together one of the most impactful seasons of his career Harris was great during the regular season but elevated his game during the playoffs scoring an average of 15.7 points on 47.9% shooting from the field He also played a vital role in limiting Karl-Anthony Towns' performances at times including holding the All-Star big man scoreless in the second half during Detroit's Game 2 victory Bucks coach Doc Rivers described Harris as a "pro’s pro," and he lived up to his former coach's high praise Ron Holland was not in the running for Rookie of the Year, but he did make a compelling case to be viewed as one of the most impactful prospects from the 2024 NBA Draft Due to his high energy and effort on both ends Holland embodied the franchise's heart and soul and became a fan favorite His rookie season laid the foundation to build upon this offseason especially when it comes to improvements in his shooting and decision-making Klintman did not get the chance to make an impact on the Pistons' season as a rookie he showcased his two-way potential during Detroit's 140-133 overtime loss to the Bucks to close the regular season to go along with six assists and two steals Reed is another player who did not establish a consistent role in Bickerstaff's rotation, but he was productive when he got a chance to play due to his defense, energy and hustle. He was vital in helping the Pistons replace Isaiah Stewart's production during the playoffs averaging 3.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals during the series Thompson began his second year late due to his recovery from a blood clot He made his season debut in late November and quickly reestablished himself as a promising player Thompson displayed his talents as a versatile force on both ends providing the Pistons a solid go-to player in transition while becoming the team's best perimeter defender Foul trouble limited Thompson's production during the playoffs. However, he arguably had his best career performance during the Pistons' Game 5 win at Madison Square Garden At the start of the season, Duren's consistency was a major flaw But once he found his niche in Bickerstaff's system Duren put together the best year of his young career finishing ninth for most double-doubles with 41 His most considerable improvements came during the second half when he took a major leap in his defensive production Duren was solid in his first playoff series He is entering the offseason with Ivey as one of two players eligible for a contract extension but due to his production and importance to the franchise Stewart took on a minor role in the Pistons' offense this season the adjustment under Bickerstaff allowed the veteran big man to become the team's top defensive anchor and interior defender He finished the regular season leading all bench players in blocks Given the close nature of the Pistons' first-round series against the Knicks Stewart probably would have made a significant difference providing Detroit with enough of a boost to potentially change the outcome of the series ANAHEIM, Calif. — Here is one of the big reasons why Kerry Carpenter is crushing the ball at the top of the lineup for the Detroit Tigers And why Trey Sweeney drove in six runs on May 4 in a 13-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. And why Zach McKinstry was able to put together a career-long 12-game hitting streak earlier this year And why Riley Greene has climbed out of his funk and started pounding homers — he made MLB history on May 2 by hitting two in the ninth inning against the Angels. COOL, CALM, COLLECTED: Riley Greene reacted with nonchalance after making MLB history with two homers in ninth And why Spencer Torkelson keeps jacking homers — he's got 10 One that deserves to be examined more thoroughly it is time to give some serious props to a group of coaches who have not gotten enough credit The Tigers' three hitting coaches: Keith Beauregard Three unsung heroes behind this sizzling hot offense “They're awesome,” Carpenter said on May 4 after getting four hits and driving in five runs in a 13-1 victory against the Angels “They're a huge part of the reason why we're having success The game plans that they put together are amazing whether we're doing what we've done to have success in the past that’s the sound of a guy who is absolutely crushing the ball “They're there for me every single day — through the lows of it all as well as the highs,” he said after getting four hits willing to do whatever it takes to help us grinding with them and they've offered me a lot of support.” That support can come in all kinds of ways Some of it technical — helping with mechanics Some of it is tactical — making game plans “They keep it loose and keep us in a good head space,” Colt Keith said after getting on base four times against the Angels (two hits and two walks) They do their homework and see how pitchers get guys out in the big leagues and kind of relay that to us.” Here’s a tiny example: They research how pitchers attack similar hitters they can go to Keith and say: We think this pitcher is going to attack you this way because this is how he has attacked similar hitters in the past “They bring good vibes and try to keep us positive," Keith said when some were worried about the Tigers offense The Tigers scored 34 runs in a four-game series against the Angels — the most they’ve scored in a series since knocking in 37 at Houston in May 2013 “Our hitting department is very consistent with everything from what information they provide the temperament after at bats,” Tigers manager A.J they are invested in every aspect for every hitter and they've got become a very good group of hitting coaches that can adapt to 13 different hitters which may require 13 different approaches.” He is not talking about approach at the plate MORE SEIDEL: Detroit Tigers' secret to success is obvious now. But this is no time for a victory lap He’s talking about approach in how they deal with people which is why we built a department that way,” Hinch said They can never really have a good day because one of the hitters probably struggled and but yet they are very consistent personalities consistent work ethic and provide incredible information.” here’s another amazing stat: The Tigers hit 20 home runs over the last week It’s the most they have hit in any seven-game stretch since September 2004 they're unbelievable people and they really care I like to utilize every single thing they have to offer." The compliments were coming fast and furious Almost as fast as these Tigers scored against the Angels I know the Angels are not world beaters — they are 13-20 But the offense has been so hot it's unmistakable probably since the first game in Houston,” Carpenter said I am not suggesting the Tigers have a great offense "We have a pretty good offense," Hinch said on May 4 But these hitting coaches are getting these guys to score like crazy Contact Jeff Seidel: jseidel@freepress.com. April 4 Here’s a young player who until this year hadn’t played a game of pro baseball showing his potential and his desire to be better every day.” How does Rainer assess all this first-year drama The Tigers prefer that their young players stick to a marvelously altruistic script during media interviews And they would be delighted to know Rainer was a veritable Boy Scout during a Saturday chat “I think the coaches and staff have done a great job,” Rainer said when asked how he had sized-up his first month of professional games that count “I can’t really go into specific detail” about what he has been doing during at-bats or what might have changed mechanically in the 10 months since he was drafted out of Harvard-Westlake High which also happens to be the school at which Tigers pitcher from his hitting seminars under the Tigers development team: “It starts with the hitters’ meetings in the morning,” he said that might have most affected him since he left high school for life at rather something from a man with a fastball in the upper 90s who had shown at Harvard-Westlake that he almost was as hot a draft prospect as a pitcher Had there been anything in the months since that represents new knowledge or refined tactics he might have been expected to absorb in these early months Rainer could have been injected with two pints of truth serum “I’m going to give all the credit to my infield coaches,” he testified The one thing each game on my to-do list is to make as many outs as I can for my pitchers.” It is why he is skippering a low-A Tigers farm team this first long and Clippers as part of the 2020 draft Luke Kennard trade which got them Saddiq Bey ANALYSIS: Pistons 2025 free agents: From Beasley to Hardaway Jr., here's the situation Detroit owns its first-round pick in 2026 but sent its second-round pick to the Clippers as part of the Kennard trade That pick will be re-routed either to the Orlando Magic or New York Knicks depending on how the standings shake out The Pistons will receive either the Wizards' or the Nets' 2027 second-round pick as part of the 2021 DeAndre Jordan trade with the Nets whichever pick finishes in a less favorable slot Detroit also owns the Bucks second-rounder, acquired as part of the KJ Martin Jr. trade with the 76ers in February There's a lot of complicated potential draft shuffling here The Pistons own their original first and second-round picks but their second-round pick could be sent to the 76ers if it lands among the top 25 picks in the round Detroit could have three additional seconds: One from the Hornets or Clippers any one of those three picks could be sent to the Jazz depending on how teams finish in the 2028 standings When the Pistons traded Monte Morris to the T'wolves at the 2024 trade deadline they also received Minnesota's 2030 second-round pick Follow the Pistons all year long with the best coverage at freep.com/sports/pistons In the bottom of the first inning in the third game of the Detroit Tigers' opening series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, starting pitcher Reese Olson gave up a solo home run to Dodgers' first baseman Freddie Freeman 267 major league pitchers have given up home runs to Freeman in his 16-year career Olson's early mistake isn't a particularly noteworthy event by itself What is noteworthy is that it's the only home run Olson has given up through his first seven starts of the season Olson has always been skilled at keeping the ball in the ballpark he allowed 1.22 home runs per nine innings right around the major-league average of 1.23 per nine And so far in 2025 he's halved that rate once again THE GAME: Detroit Tigers launch 3 homers as Reese Olson deals in 13-1 obliteration of L.A. Angels That amounts to just one home run allowed in his 38⅔ innings pitched, that first-inning solo shot by Freeman on Olson's 11th pitch of the season. And his homerless streak continued in Sunday's 13-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium in Anaheim Olson finished the game with zero runs allowed three walks and eight strikeouts over 5⅔ innings all without allowing a home run for his sixth-straight start So while no one would call Olson the best pitcher in the Tigers' rotation there is at least one important stat where he is on top A lot of that success limiting hard contact comes from Olson's changeup, which has not only turned into his best pitch, but one of the most effective pitches in the entire Tigers' rotation. In terms of Statcast's offspeed run value, which ranks the effectiveness of offspeed pitches, Olson's changeup lands in the 97th percentile among all MLB pitchers But he also got eight swings and misses on that pitch which accounted for 57% of his total whiffs while allowing only one ball in play on the changeup That's just a continuation of the success he's been seeing all year with the pitch, with opposing batters hitting just .063 against the pitch and swinging through it 53.7% of the time. He's striking out batters 47.1% of the time on his changeup, which is the highest of any qualified pitcher according to Statcast it's easy to keep the ball in the park if you're not allowing contact in the first place Olson's 53.4% ground-ball rate was the best among Tigers starters entering Sunday's start and about 11 percentage points better than league average It's also the highest ground ball rate of his career as Olson has figured out how to induce soft contact on his secondary pitches because he's pretty much a league-average pitcher in a lot of other ways His ERA (3.03) and strikeout rate (9.31 per nine innings) are better than the MLB averages while his walk rate (3.96 per nine) has risen considerably from his first two seasons His sinker grades poorly according to Statcast (17th percentile among all MLB pitchers) which is a concern considering it's his most-used pitch But as long as Olson's changeup keeps missing bats he has a weapon that can carry him through any given start the "all-or-nothing" approach has become the standard with players swinging out of their shoes for a chance at a game-breaking home run Olson has found success in his third MLB season leveraging that approach getting batters to swing hard at changeups and sliders that dart out of the zone and while Olson still has room for improvement his homerless trend is helping keep the Tigers atop the AL Central standings A look at eight free agents the Detroit Lions may be interested in after the 2025 NFL Draft Halfway through the 2025 NFL Draft, Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes reminded the media that the player acquisition phase does not end with the draft There are other avenues in the player acquisition process so it doesn’t stop at the draft,” Holmes said Though the Lions are at their maximum of 90 rostered players right now they will undoubtedly be looking for every opportunity to improve their roster from top to bottom So here are eight free agents the Lions should consider adding now that the draft is over I am centering my focus on what I believe the Lions’ only two real remaining needs: edge defender and safety The Lions hosted Walker for a free agency visit back in April Walker brings some inside/outside versatility along the defensive line And while he only has 7.0 sacks in the past two seasons (as a starter with the Bears) 280) and violence make him an above-average run defender I find it pretty hard to believe the Lions would be interested in Miller at this stage in his career (36 years old) But if they just wanted a situational pass rusher Miller did produce 40 pressures and 6.0 sacks in just 332 snaps over 13 games (about 25 snaps per game) Judon struggled last year with the Falcons but had a strong career with the Ravens and Patriots In his best season—2022—he produced 15.5 sacks and even an above-average PFF run defense grade (67.0) I believe the Lions could use a veteran in the safety room not just to provide much-needed experience behind their two starters but also to help get rookie Dan Jackson up to speed Williams has five years of experience in this defense from his days with the Saints—four of which directly overlapped with Dan Campbell’s time in New Orleans The biggest downside here is that Williams may be seeking a starting role and hasn’t regularly played on special teams since 2018 Simmons may be in the same boat as Williams—seeking an opportunity to start. He’s just a year removed from a Pro Bowl season but he’s a physical run defender who has plenty of ball skills too (21 interceptions in the last five seasons) so he’d likely only cost slightly less than that—probably too much for a backup role Jenkins may be a more realistic target. Though he was a full-time starter since 2019, his last year with the Seahawks he accepted a more situational role after being overtaken by Coby Bryant is a physical run defender who is probably more fit to be a box safety than single-high but he has plenty of experience and has played a decent amount of special teams his entire career Maye has two years of experience in the Saints defense (2022-23) so there is some schematic overlap even though he wasn’t in New Orleans when Campbell was Maye has struggled with injuries for much of his career but he played in 15 games last year—starting four He played over 100 special teams snaps last year he was suspended for three games as a result of a DUI incident in 2021 and was arrested for aggravated assault in a road rage incident in 2022 but the charges were dropped due to a lack of evidence Shawnte Passmore DETROIT – A Michigan State Police trooper is injured and a man is dead following a shooting on Detroit’s west side early Monday morning The shooting happened in the 20000 block of Murray Hill troopers assigned to its auto theft team were involved and a 23-year-old Detroit man was killed during the exchange of gunfire Michigan State Police said troopers were working undercover in the area when the suspect came out of a house and allegedly shot three times at the troopers Related: ‘Justice for my brother’: Family of Detroit man killed in shootout involving state police speaks out You can watch the full press conference below: Shawnte Passmore joined WDIV in August 2024 after working at KOVR in Sacramento, California, WFSB in Hartford, Connecticut and KMTV in Omaha, Nebraska. He began working with a sports psychologist in the offseason to learn how to channel his emotions and nerves on the track He also became a more devout reader and read books by athletes and sports psychologists, such as "The Champion's Mind," which has helped reframe his approach to being an elite athlete "Champion's Mind" has a simple message that has been a driving force for Smith: There are two wolves in each athlete and the one that gets fed will win the battle and I know I can execute through all the other hurdles I know I am powerful enough to make it through the race." While working on his mindset, Smith has been putting in extra work. He has been a constant presence at Belleville's optional 5 a.m. practices throughout the offseason, which has helped him have leading times in the 200m he is focused on eclipsing himself and ensuring he doesn't knock himself out of the race with nerves "That's what's really driving me to being where I'm at right now — trying to beat myself," Smith said "I'm at the top of all of my events so far this year so it's kind of like I'm chasing myself."
