The Cleveland Browns entered the 2025 NFL Draft with plenty of quarterback uncertainty; Deshaun Watson is out indefinitely with an Achilles injury, and the top of the depth chart might be veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett. The Browns needed to leave draft weekend with a quarterback — they left with two, in Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders
On the latest episode of the “Scoop City” podcast
Dianna Russini and Chase Daniel were joined by The Athletic’s draft expert Dane Brugler to discuss why the Browns taking Gabriel at 94 was such a surprise
A partial transcript has been edited for clarity and length. The full episode is available on YouTube below or in “Scoop City” feed on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
I want to talk about quarterbacks because that’s what I know — and that’s what you know
What was the biggest surprise pick for you
and then in my final mock draft I had the Giants trading up for Jaxson Dart
But it was interesting on Day 2 to see the order
We knew the Saints liked Tyler Shough a lot
after I reported a couple of weeks ago that he got an invite to the draft
there was a lot of buzz with people saying
he must have assurances that he’s going in the top 50.” But then he ended up falling to 92
it was a no-brainer roll of the dice for them
But Dillon Gabriel is probably the answer here
and he’s like a point guard in the way he operates
He’s a perfect example of how important spring is for quarterbacks
Because I had multiple teams telling me that Gabriel was the most impressive interview they did throughout the process
That’s the Senior Bowl and combine — he was the most impressive interview that teams did
It’s not a huge surprise when you talk to his coaches at UCF
He showed up at Oregon this past year in his minivan
and one of the reasons he has a minivan is so he has enough room to take his teammates places
That’s the kind of leader that he is and the kind of guy that he is
He quickly became the captain of that team
and with quarterbacks — you know this better than anyone Chase — it’s an intangible position
but how you operate behind the scenes is what led Gabriel to be a Day 2 pick
Chase: Speaking of what happens behind the scenes, obviously, there’s been a lot made of Shedeur Sanders’ draft fall
the second round is exactly where he should be.’ What do you think was the main reason he fell so far down draft boards
Dane: It’s the juxtaposition of what we just talked about with Dillon Gabriel
I heard you guys talk before about the recruiting process
you can’t go into this if you’re a prospect and think you have the leverage
There were only so many teams in for Shedeur Sanders in the first place
so the pool of potential landing spots was already small
and some of the other teams go with different quarterbacks
you’re talking about less than a handful of potential landing spots for you
We thought at one point maybe the Steelers in round three would take him
Then when we got to day three with the Browns
and I don’t think they had any intention of drafting him
no big deal.” It’ll be interesting to keep an eye on the Browns’ training camp and how this plays out
We’ve seen it before where teams carry four quarterbacks into the season
but it would be a surprise if the Browns carry all four of these guys in Joe Flacco
and then the two rookies in Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders
GMs and people in general talking around the league since the draft have been giving the media
and people who do what you and I do a hard time asking
“How could you guys be so wrong on Shedeur?” I’ve been pushing back because I don’t think anyone was wrong
I just think we didn’t have enough information about what happened in the spring
but I think teams were really trying to keep that private
And a lot of the people who were watching the film were just doing it based on his ability
which is why he was projected to go higher than he did
What would your response be to that when we’re getting pushback
“The people who do this for a living have been so off on the Shedeur Sanders story.”
Dane: I remember joining you guys back in the fall and saying
That’s not the type of player we’re dealing with here
That’s what the talent says.” If Shedeur Sanders had Dillon Gabriel’s intangibles
I 100 percent believe he would have been drafted somewhere in the top-50 picks
and I don’t know about you guys but the sources I talked to still thought someone was going to take Shedeur
So we’re going based on the information that we’re getting from teams
they still believed somebody in the NFL was going to take a chance on him
But it didn’t end up happening until much later than we anticipated
The biggest key here is the fact that there were so few teams at the beginning
were not going to do all the legwork needed on Shedeur because they didn’t need a quarterback
and he’s probably not going to make it to us at 64
So we’re not going to do all of the legwork required on a prospect like this.” There are a lot of teams that were just out because they didn’t anticipate even having to consider him in the third
The pool of teams that were potential landing spots was so few
and that really changed the whole dynamics of the situation

Gabriel never finished with more than seven picks in a single season, and he had a 160.9 career passer rating across stints at UCF, Oklahoma and Oregon.
picked up new terminology quickly and hit the ground running in each of his stops," Cabot wrote
has excellent leadership ability and has started an FBS-record 63 games
He's also tied Case Keenum for the all-time FBS record with 155 TD passes."
Cabot added that Gabriel will be ahead of Sanders in the depth chart when the Browns get their offseason workouts underway
The report further underscores the divide between how people outside of the NFL evaluated Sanders and how those employed by teams scrutinized his game
and brought the best version of himself to the table."
Head coach Kevin Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry simply didn't see Sanders as a prospect who jumped off the page
.css-az13ih{width:100%;aspect-ratio:3/2;border:none;}With Gabriel
there was a larger body of evidence thanks to him spending six years at the FBS level
He also consistently delivered at every stop
eclipsing 3,000 passing yards in five seasons
when a broken clavicle limited him to three starts
Gabriel's relative anonymity works to his benefit as well
Almost no one had Gabriel coming off the board before Sanders
the explanation is relatively straightforward
The Browns NFL draft class has two very accurate quarterback
Both Cleveland rookies made their name in college as accurate throwers of the football
While completion percentage is not the lone metric that creates that narrative (dropped passes
it does provide a catch-all for how accurate a quarterback is
Sanders became the all-time FBS leader in completion percentage at 71.8%
has just a 65.2% career mark but completed 69.3% (at Oklahoma) and 72.9% (at Oregon) in his last two seasons in college
Gabriel is in the Top 100 in college history at #83
The full list can be found on Sports Reference (hat tip to Nick Karns on Twitter)
Burrow is the best and Mayfield is the only other starting-level quarterback on the list
McCoy and Keenum kicked around the league for a long time as backups and Rattler still has a chance to take a starting role early in his career
The rest of the group either never got a chance in the NFL or didn’t do much with the chances they had. Brock Purdy, whom we compared to Sanders recently
was the only other quarterback in the Top 25 to become an established starter in the NFL
Gabriel and Sanders made their names as accurate quarterbacks and have a shot at becoming immortal if one of them can become a star with the Browns
History just shows that elite accuracy in college doesn’t correlate strongly to success at the NFL level
Are you surprised that elite college accuracy hasn’t led to NFL success historically
Do you think Sanders or Gabriel will be able to overcome that like Burrow

It wasn't necessarily the plan to add two quarterbacks
according to Cleveland General Manager Andrew Berry
but now the Browns have one of the most interesting storylines to follow
How will it all shake out and where does the position stand as of now
The Browns ranked Gabriel ahead of Sanders on their draft board
also on their depth chart as the quarterback competition begins in offseason workouts
per a report from Cleveland insider Mary Kay Cabot
/ Chris Pietsch/The Register-Guard / USA TODAY NETWORK / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn ImagesGabriel's experience
NFL combine interviews and ability to take care of the ball are a few of the reasons the Browns felt it was a no-brainer to draft Gabriel over Sanders in the third round
Gabriel's spot on the depth chart is notable as snaps will come at a premium for the Browns' crowded quarterback position
Gabriel has a chance to wow during this offseason
as Cleveland would like to have a starting quarterback named by the beginning of training camp in late summer
Gabriel and Sanders will compete with 40-year-old veteran Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett for the starting job
Good news for Cleveland fans who suffered through a 3-14 season in 2024
"I learned how to become a winner," Gabriel said after getting drafted to Cleveland. "It's a habit and you've got to do it every single day
excited to bring that and excited to continue to grow and learn because naturally
I'm eager to learn and know that I don't know everything and what I'm walking into
I have a great clue and probably have the most experience of anyone that can be walking into what the NFL is."
One of the deciding factors for Cleveland to pass on Sanders until the fifth round was his negative plays

Cleveland's quarterback room has been one of the worst in the NFL. The Browns have selected 13 quarterback prospects in the past 26 draft classes and the last 11 have not panned out.
"We love adding competition to every position room and adding him to compete with the guys that are already in there, we felt like that was the appropriate thing to do," Berry continued.
The 5-11, 205-pound quarterback Gabriel silenced Oregon to a 13-1 overall record and a Big Ten Conference title in 2024. Gabriel finished 30 touchdowns plus six interceptions on 3,857 yards with a 72.9 completion rate. He also collected 149 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 75 carries.
Gabriel was also a 2024 Heisman Trophy finalist and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. Gabriel is the FBS all-time leader in career total touchdowns (189), and tied with Case Keenum for the all-time lead in passing touchdowns (155). He is second in FBS history in career passing yards (18,722) and total yards (19,931).
Berry also recognizes that Gabriel is undersized but feels he can overcome it in the pros.

Doesn't have ideal height but that's not something we thought showed up in his game."
Both Sanders and Gabriel have a shot to earn starting reps. The real competition begins at Cleveland's rookie mini camp, on Friday through Sunday (May 9-11).

And for those who have witnessed the childlike antics of both council members and the public at these meetings
including the R-rated language during some of the back-and-forth verbal volleys
it was hard to have faith in this version of local government
the same seven town council members began a second meeting as the governing board of DURA
During this meeting they needed to vote on accepting the parcel of property from the town of Dillon
This is the precise parcel that the Dillon town council unanimously voted to give to DURA
And DURA said “no,” by a vote of 5-2
I thought about this for a while and couldn’t understand why DURA voted against this kind offer from Dillon
how many of us would say “no” to someone offering a free parcel of property
unless of course there is something wrong with the property
Maybe Dillon is trying to rid itself of a contaminated property and pass off untold liabilities to DURA
Perhaps this small parcel is otherwise haunted by something of its past
But no such luck exists for some explanation that would explain why DURA said “no.” So I did what any confused lawyer would do in similar circumstances: I sent all seven council members an e-mail via their official Dillon e-mail addresses and simply asked: what am I missing
All seven of the council voted to give the parcel to DURA
and then five of these same seven council members voted as DURA not to accept the offer
While I did not expect a reply from the two members who voted “yes” both times
I did expect a reply from all five of the members who voted different ways depending upon which hat they were wearing
And you would think that in the first public meeting following the recall election (an election upon which transparency and listening/responding to the public were primary themes)
a simple answer to explain their differing votes would be easy to enunciate
if I were on the council and I was planning to vote in two different ways on the same issue in a public forum I would be ready with an explanation
To date only two of the five council members have acknowledged my obvious question
One was a non-recalled member of the council
and the other was one of the newly appointed members
This new council member indicated to me that voting “yes” as a town council member “preserved options” and was not comfortable with voting “yes” as a DURA member because there was not enough information available to decide what would be in the best interest of the community
After listening to portions of the recording a second time
I still am confused as to exactly what the town is trying to do
Instead of tabling the issue for a few weeks so that this council member (and others) could get the requisite information to make an informed decision
the council voted down a resolution to accept the property
And back to the chief complaint about the town council members recalled and their alleged lack of transparency and community involvement
I’m still waiting for replies from the other three members of both councils who did not vote in a consistent way

The Browns wrapped up a successful draft weekend in which they welcomed seven rookies to the team
Cleveland addressed different areas of the roster
The next step for the newest members of the Browns will come in rookie minicamp
set to take place at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus from May 9-11
As we assess the 2025 draft and prepare for offseason workouts and rookie minicamp
we opened the mailbag and answered your questions
Why did the Browns draft Dillon Gabriel in the third round and Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round
one of the biggest factors to address is that Executive Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager Andrew Berry said it wasn't necessarily the plan going into the weekend to select two quarterbacks
"You envision how the draft could possibly play out
and then you just really adjust to what's on the board," Berry said
"We don't really go into the draft saying okay
here are our needs and we're just going to pick players at need positions.' If you do
there is a little bit of a flow to the weekend because the board does take different twists and turns as you go
we try and do everything in our power to maximize the impact of the picks we have in aggregate."
Berry said they do believe in best player available
And while they didn't originally think that Sanders would be available in the fifth round
when the opportunity rose to make the trade and jump from No
They had evaluated who else was available from a prospect standpoint
considered the potential of taking Sanders
solid prospect at the most important position
We felt like it got to a point where he was probably mispriced relative to the draft
and it's a guy that we think can outproduce his draft slot," Berry said
"Our expectation is for him to come in here and work and compete
Berry said the Browns saw accuracy and decision making as strengths of their individual games
they both will have the chance to compete among the quarterbacks
what are the Browns most pressing remaining needs as we approach the coming season
It's a position group that could use another depth piece to round out the room heading into the 2025 season
What does Kenny Picket bring to the Browns as an experienced quarterback
In a quarterback room that now features Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel and Sanders, Kenny Pickett's experience in the NFL is one that could prove beneficial
While they have a veteran in Flacco who has 17 years of experience in the NFL
Pickett's three years of experience on two separate teams can help the rookie quarterbacks in their adjustment to the league
he also brings more than just the mentorship aspect
Pickett is a mobile quarterback who knows how to protect the ball
Berry said that during the draft process in 2022
they did their work on him as a prospect and then faced Pickett twice per season during his first two seasons with the Steelers
Berry added they see more physical ability in Pickett
and believe in this setting with the Browns

To begin the offseason, Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot reported the depth chart will be just as the draft was -- Dillon Gabriel in front of Sanders
The fact the Browns saw Jalen Milroe as a better prospect than Sanders as well is an indication that there could be a sizable gap between Gabriel and Sanders entering offseason workouts
Cleveland also has veteran quarterbacks Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett on its roster

Cabot added that Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees stated in January that decision-making was the top trait the organization was looking for in a signal-caller
Gabriel spent this past season for the Oregon Ducks, leading them to the No. 1 ranking in the country. Gabriel started the 2022 and 2023 seasons for the Oklahoma Sooners
The No. 94 overall pick in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Gabriel played the first three seasons of his college career with the UCF Knights. Gabriel's best statistical season with the Knights was 2020 when he threw for 3,570 yards and 32 touchdowns with only four interceptions
After drafting Gabriel on Day 2, the Browns added Sanders 50 picks later at No
Cleveland Browns quarterback Dillon Gabriel has the best odds of winning an offseason award
Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders has better odds when it comes to winning Offensive Rookie of the Year than Gabriel
despite Sanders being picked two rounds after Gabriel
For some context, Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is the only Duck to have won AP Offensive Rookie of the Year
Herbert broke the record for most passing touchdowns by a rookie (31) and most pass completions by a rookie (396)
He threw for 4,336 total passing yards and finished his rookie campaign on a four-game winning streak

It's worth pointing out that Dallas Cowboys offensive tackle Ajani Cornelius and Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jeffrey Bassa were not even listed with odds
Even further on who from the 2024 Oregon team will be pursuing a professional football career, four players have accepted rookie mini-camp invitations
Cornerback Kam Alexander - Seattle Seahawks
Linebacker Jestin Jacobs - Miami Dolphins
Offensive lineman Marcus Harper II - Indianapolis Colts
Offensive lineman Nishad Strother - Baltimore Ravens

Whoever wins will advance to the second round
In what has been a back-and-forth and highly entertaining series
it's only fitting that it comes down to a Game 7 matchup in Houston
Having home-court advantage will be helpful for the Rockets
Houston will need to match that energy on the court
Dillon Brooks spoke out ahead of this evening's game and revealed his mindset for the game
He also sent a clear message about the showdown
“Everything is going to be ramped up. It’s gonna be electrifying," he said
"We’ve been backs-against-the-wall for two games
I feel like we’re confident and ready to go.”
Everything will start on the defensive end of the floor for the Rockets. They will need to bring toughness and energy against Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler
Houston Rockets forward Dillon Brooks (9)
Butler has also spoken out with extreme confidence ahead of Game 7
"Confidence. Keep them confident," Butler said
But I know we'll win on Sunday."
Game 7 will begin with tip off at 8:30 p.m
Both sides are confident about coming out with a win and fans are sure to be given a show

Not just on the floor—but with words
Steph Curry continues to be one of the biggest factors in the series
The veteran guard had 36 points in the Warriors’ Game 3 win
he’s averaged just 15 points per game
Houston knows exactly what Curry is capable of and is preparing to defend him in Friday night’s elimination game
Curry has also been dealing with a thumb injury—something the Rockets haven’t ignored in their physical approach to the series
Rockets veteran Dillon Brooks spoke before the game and didn’t hold back when asked about the Warriors and Curry’s frustration with the physical play:
"If he's concerned about contact
The injury to Curry came in Game 5 when Brooks' right arm made contact with Curry's right hand following a shot
During the regular season, the 6-foot-2 guard averaged 24.5 points per game and played in 70-of-82 games. Curry also shot a blistering 93.3% from the free-throw line. Golden State went 48-34 during the regular season, which earned them a spot in the play-in round against the Memphis Grizzlies
The Warriors pulled out a 121-116 win on April 15
Brooks has always been a thorn in the side of opponents
and he’s coming off his best game of the series in Game 5
The 29-year-old Oregon product dropped 24 points in just 28 minutes of action
The Rockets forward appeared in 75 games this season
He’s been with Houston since the start of the 2023–24 campaign after spending six seasons in Memphis

"Five different talent evaluators across the league agreed: Sanders has exemplified more talent and a higher ceiling than Gabriel," wrote Epstein
"Evaluators believed Sanders had the potential to develop into a quality starter while Gabriel’s ceiling was more likely at high-level backup
Each can be a system fit with Cleveland’s above-average offensive line."
Epstein also spoke with an unnamed NFC executive about the choice between Sanders and Gabriel
who argued doubling up on quarterbacks in the 2025 Draft was a smart move for the Browns given the upside of Sanders' talent
especially for that value,” the unnamed executive told Yahoo Sports regarding Sanders
“This guy has a chance to end up being their starter
But it's just a matter of the risk you take."

Cleveland's Executive Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager Andrew Berry spoke further about drafting Sanders after Gabriel
Berry claimed that the Browns' strategy was to go for the best player available at the time of their pick
and Sanders was the right athlete at the right time
and it's a guy that we think can outproduce his draft slot
Our expectation is for him to come in here and work and compete
Berry cited both Gabriel and Sanders were selected by the program for their "accuracy" and "decision making" skills before emphasizing that the quarterback competition is an open race for all five quarterback selections

Mandatory Credit: Robert Hanashiro-Imagn Images / Robert Hanashiro-Imagn ImagesBetting odds for the Cleveland starting quarterback trends in the direction of Flacco (+116) with the veteran earning NFL's Comeback Player of the Year in 2023 with the Browns Pickett (+220) follows behind Flacco with Sanders (+370) leading above Gabriel (+830) by a wide margin
as he is dealing with a double-ruptured Achilles tendon and will likely not play for the 2025 season
with Sanders' late drafting feeling based in factors argued to range outside of his talent
will the Browns decide to go with another controversial quarterback choice as Watson continues to be sidelined by injury
knowing Gabriel will be able to compete for the starting position can be a reassuring factor
as the six year NCAA football veteran has the opportunity to show the talent that earned him so many NCAA records during his Oregon tenure
Though concern still circulates about Gabriel's ceiling and his height becoming a more glaring problem in the NFL
time will tell if Gabriel can surpass Sanders for the title of "QB1"

one of which many considered to be a reach
In a recent article by Ian Valentino of The 33rd Team
he ranks who he believes are the nine biggest reaches of the draft
he thinks the Browns took too much of a chance on Dillon Gabriel in the third round
"If you flip the order of Cleveland's two drafted quarterbacks
it was stunning when they selected Dillon Gabriel in the third round," Valentino wrote
"While his experience and mobility are great for a backup
his weak arm and issues against pressure will pigeonhole his upside and opportunities."
The Browns also took Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round after his massive slide
but taking Gabriel over him does raise some questions
though we are always a bit dubious about pretending that we know more about the ins and outs of the play of prospects like this than the Cleveland coaching staff and scouting department do
Gabriel is the all-time record holder for most touchdowns in college football history with 189

Tatum’s injury history can be seen as a redflag
He endured season ending injuries in back-to-back years
With the Gators' target choosing a Northwestern program that finished last year just 4-8
it looks as if Florida’s staff possibly decided not to take a risk on the veteran
which does not come as a surprise considering their clear confidence in the current roster
we are in a position where we don’t have to worry about the portal,” head coach Billy Napier said this spring
keep an eye out for Florida to still make a move for one last addition to a secondary unit that was constantly banged up last year

Gabriel's spot on the depth chart is notable as snaps will come at a premium for the Browns' crowded quarterback position
"I learned how to become a winner," Gabriel said after getting drafted to Cleveland. "It's a habit and you've got to do it every single day
I'm eager to learn and know that I don't know everything and what I'm walking into
I have a great clue and probably have the most experience of anyone that can be walking into what the NFL is."
Once a projected first round draft pick, Sanders experienced an unprecedented fall in the draft
"We talk oftentimes about quarterback being the most important position in the sport," Browns General Manager Andrew Berry said
"We obviously spent a lot of time with Shedeur throughout the process
It wasn't necessarily the plan going into the weekend to select two quarterbacks
and we didn't necessarily expect him to be available in the fifth round."
Cleveland's quarterback room has been one of the worst in the NFL
"We love adding competition to every position room and adding him to compete with the guys that are already in there
we felt like that was the appropriate thing to do," Berry continued
I think decision making and how decisive I've been
And the anticipation - all things that translate to the NFL," Gabriel said after being drafted
when you get around one another you just appreciate the vibe and understand schematically what they're going to do
Just appreciative and excited to be apart of it."
205-pound quarterback Gabriel silenced Oregon to a 13-1 overall record and a Big Ten Conference title in 2024
Berry also recognizes that Gabriel is undersized but feels he can overcome it in the pros
Doesn't have ideal height but that's not something we thought showed up in his game."
The real competition begins at Cleveland's rookie mini camp

The Browns decided upon their young QB
you realize that the only time I talk in the first person is in an occasional column called “Thoughts & Jots,” where I discuss whatever NFL subject is on my mind
In this article, I am discussing the Cleveland Browns selection of QB Dillon Gabriel from Oregon while you and I are sitting on the porch drinking a cold one
while my famous hamburger recipe is on the grill along with some ears of corn
And if you happen to like your cooked beef a certain way
that’s just too bad because they all come off at the same time
RELATED: GABRIEL BRINGS DUAL-THREAT TO THE QB ROOM
I covered my first Senior Bowl in 1994 when Bill Belichick was the head coach of the Cleveland Browns
I wrote for a weekly publication called “The Giants Newsweekly” whose publisher was Dave Klein
Dave was one of five writers who had been to every Super Bowl until a knee injury sidelined him from going not long ago
mainly for being the sarcastic one in the room who always asked the most damaging questions
He was also very much to the point and did not care if your feelings got hurt
I am not an investigative reporter who is looking to dig up something that will make me well-known or get “clicks.” I don’t feel it is my position to embarrass anyone
I look for the good stuff and focus on questions that I
If I get a former Browns player from the 1960s-1980s
I ask them to tell me a Cleveland Municipal Stadium story since the building was pretty much always in need of repairs
The rosters used to be called “North” and “South,” but they dropped that
and now they are titled “National” and “American.” Reese’s is the top sponsor which is now owned by Hershey’s and there is candy every friggin’ where
This year’s quarterbacks were Will Howard of Ohio State, Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard, Tyler Shough from Louisville, Oregon’s Dillion Gabriel, Jaxson Dart from Ole Miss
an international player in Taylor Elgersma of Wilfrid Laurier (Canada)
every Ohio State player pulled out of the game
Seth Henigan of Memphis became his replacement
Which was a bummer because I wanted to see some sort of Howard versus Leonard reprise
these guys were ranked to be drafted in the following rounds - Milroe: 2
This was based on the Big Board of Pro Football Focus
I know because before I went over to Mobile
I did the research on every QB because it was widely known the Browns would be drafting one this year
I wanted to be prepared in case it was one of the dudes I was able to interview
which were all published on Dawgs By Nature
I took notes on all of them and mentioned several in my daily Senior Bowl diary
which contained the practice sessions from Tuesday
but then lit up the sessions the remainder of the week
I liked Leonard a lot and thought he was probably the best overall prospect for the week
But I also thought that Gabriel was the only QB that competed that looked like he could start Week 1 of the 2025 season

but was able to get my digital recorder in on two interview sessions with other reporters
Back in the day, as a media person with credentials, you stood next to any and every NFL head coach or assistant coach. If you wanted to watch practice next to Mike Singletary, you just worked your way in that direction and stood next to him. Jimmy Johnson? Right over there. Mean Joe Greene, the defensive line coach of the Arizona Cardinals
you had plenty of time on the field to get “your guy” and corral him if an NFL scout did not beat you to it first
it was “hands off” or you got a tongue lashing from the scout
I have a list of guys that play certain positions the Browns need
and a list of which rounds they are projected to be selected
but there is also a “media day” where they bring in all the players
and you get to spend some time with your listed guys
not be timid (I’m not) or hesitant (please!)
and grab your guy and start into your questions without hesitation (I don’t)
sometimes your guy is only available in group settings
What this does is cut down the number of questions you can ask yourself
It also means that other reporters are asking questions to fit their storylines that may or may not fit mine
this is how I was able to interview Dillion Gabriel
and some of his answers did not come from my questions
Others will ask him about the Oregon coaches or his time with the program because they are from that state
and their readers are from that state or school
in reviewing my digital recorder when I was ready to transcribe interviews from the Senior Bowl
I passed over Gabriel’s two interview sessions because I felt some of his answers did not have any significance to Browns fans and our readers
I had to find out what he said and transcribe it
Here is what Gabriel said at the Senior Bowl
Burgers are just about done by the way:
Q: What NFL quarterbacks do you enjoy watching or have studied
Guys that all are playing really well at the NFL level
But I also admire the guys who have a different playing style
But I also like Steve Young and Michael Vick
I think from everyone you can learn a little bit
Q: One of your best games of the season was the win over Ohio State
It felt really good about coming in on a Friday in a great atmosphere
We had a great game plan and loved how the guys worked leading up to that one
We knew we could beat them if we played at our best and were good in situational football
Q: We hear the number 8 has some significance
Him playing the quarterback position was definitely a connection for me directly
Seeing what he did at Oregon is special and I don’t take it lightly
Q: How was your Rose Bowl experience
I think we should play more football on nice grass instead of on the artificial stuff
Do fans want to sit in the snow and the rain
Q: What box checking do NFL teams mostly ask of you
A: I do ask them if they have a true interest or just a reference
it’s crazy what you can learn in just 30 minutes
And I appreciate the teams that dive into it
you will always be connected at one point or another
I just try to make the most of it and be present within that moment
I’ve done it and it hasn’t been a limiting factor for me
I think if you watch and if there are limitations because of height
although I am walking into some unknown where the best football players are gathering to compete
I know that there’s going to be a level of me having to improve
but that’s for everyone who is walking into the NFL
I am eager to learn and staying true to that
the knock-on Gabriel is the fact that he is just 5’-11” tall
The first interview scrum I was in with him
I will say “whatever.” All of the other QBs had good height
His 73.2% completion percentage in 2024 ranked second nationally
while his 166.57 passer efficiency rating placed him seventh among FBS quarterbacks
Perhaps most impressive is his durability and experience – Gabriel started an FBS-record 63 games
amassing 18,722 career passing yards and 155 touchdown passes along the way
He was the Big-10 Most Valuable Player this past year
I was in another reporter gathering with one of the game’s quarterbacks
“That short guy acts like he is going to play in this league.” The reporter nodded
then beat out the starter in his rookie year
You also know that writers like me think they may know a lot most of the time
and then get embarrassed by being completely wrong
Billy Kilmer – all none-tall guys who made the game work for them
Here are some of my notes on Gabriel from the Senior Bowl practices:
Now that we both have a new cold one and we figured out who absconded with the Stadium Mustard
His wingspan is not comparable to most NFL quarterbacks
and his hands are a bit on the smaller side
He is a very good runner and an even better scrambler
The bottom line is that he needs a system built around quick game concepts
where his processing speed and release can shine
the Browns wanted a developmental quarterback and got one
and they chose him over the others that were available at the time they took Gabriel earlier in the same round
The good news is that Gabriel is not expected to play this year
