Aleksander Basilaia exemplifies what it means to be a good citizen and help the community
according to his Character Counts nominator Evan Halstead
Aleksandre is a junior at Dinuba High School this year as a part of their exchange student program
After just two months of being in the U.S.
he's already made his mark on the community
When out shopping with his host father and another exchange student
they were faced with a stranger having a medical crisis
She was unresponsive so he laid down beside her and positioned her on her side so she would not choke
He kept her calm and continued to check her vitals until the paramedics arrived
Aleksander is the deserving winner of the Character Counts Citizenship Award
I already had the knowledge of what to do in critical situations," he said
the way I was raised compelled me to help her
and my Boy Scout training gave me the tools to handle such situations."
Character Counts! These Tulare County students excel in citizenship
He went on to say that being kind and ready to help is important
"Always remember that good things will come back to you,” he said
Aleksander is caring and goes above and beyond to help others in the community
and he enters difficult situations for better outcomes,” Halstead said
“I truly believe that Aleksander was a life-saving hero that evening.”
Aleksander broke up a fight that occurred on the school campus after hours
He was the first to try to stop the fight while other students stood to the side and watched
I initially thought the friends would stop them
you make mistakes that you regret in the future."
Aleksander spoke to one of the girls involved
"I told her that violence isn’t a solution to problems
I hope she learned something from my words," he said
"It’s all about spreading kindness and setting a good example for others.”

California parole commissioners have found 78-year-old Ramiro Bautista suitable for parole
Bautista has served more than 30 years of his sentence of life in prison for the 1989 shooting death of an 8-year-old child in Dinuba
The commissioners decided to approve his parole during a virtual hearing on Tuesday
Bautista is currently incarcerated at the Richard J

(FOX26) — Two Dinuba high school students have created an awareness campaign for opioids after one of the girls lost her brother to an overdose
their goal is to save at least one life with the powerful message "One pill will kill."
[RELATED]Memorial ride for Josh Cowdrey, Harley rider, veteran, uncle
16-year-old Kylie Lopez said losing her 17-year-old brother to a fentanyl overdose was one of the hardest things her family ever had to go through
"No one ever really thinks that it can happen to them but my family is an example that it can happen to anyone at any given moment," she said
Even though Kylie's brother died four years ago
and I want to spread this message so it doesn't happen to anyone else or their families," said Kylie
The message Kylie is talking about is "One pill will kill."
It's a project Kylie and Sanjog Pannu came up with for a state competition when they were 15 years old
But now it's become more than just winning
"We realized the reward wasn't just placing and getting a number at a state competition
but it was the lives that we changed around us," said Sanjog
Kylie and Sanjog have spoken to their own high school
It brings awareness from a teenager's perspective of why drug use is bad
But this message will always hit home a little harder for Kylie
She hopes talking about it might save at least one life
"Since I'm approaching the age that he was when he passed away
I feel like I'm fully understanding the severity and the consequences of what happened four years ago," said Kylie
"So just doing this really means a lot to me
especially educating people who are his age at the time
because I feel like when you're that young
you really don't understand the consequences."
"The message is getting out there; they're going to make an impact," said their Teacher
"They're going to be those kids who are 20 years old and still making an impact
but it's going to be nationwide at that point."
Saturday was International Overdose Awareness Day to remember loved ones who have died from a drug overdose
