Donna Adelson will not be going on trial for the murder-for-hire of Dan Markel in June after all
Leon Circuit Judge Stephen Everett granted a defense motion to continue the high-profile murder trial
the fourth since Markel was killed in 2014
His decision came a day after an explosive hearing on Wednesday in which news surfaced that the State Attorney’s Office conducted a more recent criminal investigation into unknown allegations involving Adelson
Those allegations prompted a judge to sign off on wiretaps that included communications between Adelson and her lawyers
who is representing Adelson along with Jackie Fulford
told Everett during the hearing that the allegations proved false
Assistant State Attorney Sarah Kathryn Dugan said prosecutors intend to use one or two conversations from the wiretaps
Everett did not set a new trial date in his order
He said it would be the last continuance granted absent “good cause” presented
“The court must afford the defendant an adequate opportunity to investigate and/or prepare a defense,” Everett wrote
Everett added that in consideration of case law
“the defendant has demonstrated good cause for the relief sought and the state has concede that it will not suffer any prejudice by moving the date of the trial.”
Jury selection in Donna Adelson’s trial was scheduled to begin June 3 at the Leon County Courthouse
The continuance marks another delay in a case marked by them
her trial imploded on the first day of jury selection over conflicts of interest involving her lawyers
Adelson is charged with first-degree murder
conspiracy and solicitation in the murder of Markel
out of the way so she could relocate with their two sons to South Florida
was convicted of the same crimes in 2023 and sentenced to life in prison
including the two hit men who killed Markel

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Court TV) — A judge granted a request from Donna Adelson‘s defense team to delay her upcoming trial
Adelson, 74, is charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation in the 2014 death of her ex-son-in-law, Dan Markel
who appeared at a Wednesday hearing via Zoom
was scheduled to go on trial beginning June 3
Donna Adelson appears in court for a pretrial hearing on Feb
The defense sought a continuance because they say they need more time to review new discovery they’ve obtained through wiretaps and over 80,000 e-mails
They also told Judge Stephen Everett that they’re waiting on discovery they’re entitled to under the rules of governing jailhouse informants that they have not yet received
This includes whether anyone has been given favorable treatment in exchange for testimony
as well as statements the prosecution wishes to elicit
Judge Everett issued an order delaying the trial without setting a new date
“No further continuances shall be granted without good cause presented.”
Markel, an FSU law professor, was gunned down in his garage in what was eventually revealed to have been a murder-for-hire plot. Adelson’s son, Charlie Adelson
was convicted of hiring two hitmen to carry out the killing

Donna allegedly wanted Markel dead because he was in a bitter custody battle with his ex-wife Wendi Adelson
over the couple’s two preschool-aged sons
When Wendi’s petition to be allowed to relocate to the Miami area was denied by the court
Donna reportedly became fixated on having her grandsons near her at any cost
The judge also announced at Wednesday’s hearing that May 16 will be the deadline for filing motions
He also stated that prosecutors have until Friday of this week to hand over to the defense all discovery related to the informants
Earlier this month, a defense motion to have Judge Everett step down from the case was denied
A previous defense request for a change in venue is still under consideration
All three of this month’s defense motions were filed under seal
so details have not yet been released to the public
a group of Detroiters met to critique paintings over dinner and drinks
The group eventually named themselves The Scarab Club
the Detroit artists’ club and gallery has played an important part in the city’s art scene
the club is still a resource for Detroit artists and maintains a mission of fostering a more vibrant arts community in the city
is also focused on creating a space where art feels accessible—whether you're making it or looking at it
Jackson is the first Black woman to manage the Scarab Club gallery in its 100-plus year history
but she actually stumbled upon the Scarab Club by accident
After visiting the Detroit Institute of Arts one day
So she instead followed someone into a nearby building
it was membership-based—it was all of these things,” she said
Jackson was asked to do a workshop on resumes for the Scarab Club
like literally part of the team,” Jackson said
Jackson used drawing and art as a way to express herself
That love of art was fostered by both her parents and her teachers in Detroit Public Schools
But Jackson didn't initially see working in the art world as a viable career
She also excelled at science and math in school
when she became a freshman at Western Michigan University
Jackson initially was intent on studying chemical engineering
were always in the background sustaining me as I was doing these structural things that you're ‘supposed’ to do to create a career for yourself,” she said
or that I could truly make a career in the arts.”
Jackson spent most of her career in nonprofit work as a graphic designer and brand manager
While working at the Houston Public Library in 2006
Jackson tried her hand at curating projects
I would hear so much news about my hometown
and a lot of the news was about Detroit coming back.”
Jackson was excited to hear of the city’s revival
who were Detroit culture creators and artists
“I would never see them in the stories that I was seeing
so I knew that the nation was getting not the whole story of Detroit,” she said
and part of the way I did that was through developing projects that used art.”
Jackson said she believes “art has this brand of being for a particular class of people
She is proud of the way Detroit is breaking that brand
and wants the Scarab Club to be part of that work
“What we have been doing is making things like membership more accessible
creating exhibitions that look and feel more like Metro Detroit,” Jackson explained
“People like me becoming part of the team and that are Detroiters
and Norman Rockwell have visited the Scarab Club
Jackson is invested in telling their stories
as well as the stories of the artists who are shaping Detroit today
“One thing that I'm very interested in is more storytelling...sharing more stories about the artists of Detroit through the Scarab Club lens,” Jackson said
“So many artists have come through those doors over these 100 years or 100-plus years
but knowing those that came before and knowing extraordinary artists that are here now
I want to help tell more of their stories.”
The former mother-in-law of slain Florida law professor Dan Markel asked Wednesday to delay her trial on charges she helped orchestrate his murder
citing copious discovery produced in recent weeks by the prosecution.…In the last two weeks
they have received more than 100,000 emails and have had to purchase software to try to go through them quickly
The state has also produced more than 30 calls from a wiretap in this new investigation
and Zelman said they “have not had an opportunity to review even two hours of these calls.”
it probably isn’t the best idea to have counsel listen to over 30 wiretapped calls at 4x speed like they’re cramming for a Crim Law final to be trial ready
That’s not even factoring in the 100k+ emails
Adelson and their counsel will know if they get the additional time or not very soon

Donna Adelson’s murder trial
which has already been marked by major delays
could get pushed back again — this time over a mysterious side investigation launched by the state
The investigation — the apparent topic of a series of recently filed motions under seal — came up during a hearing Wednesday
which involves an informant and new wiretapped communications
Everett said he would rule on that motion later
agree to a defense request to push back deadlines for pre-trial motions from April 30 to May 16
A final pre-trial hearing that had been set for May 16 will be rescheduled
The big news out of the hearing was the side investigation into alleged criminal activity by unknown parties who are involved in the Adelson case
“What has come out about three weeks ago is the state conducted this additional investigation into allegations,” Zelman said
Zelman alluded in court to the possibility that Adelson’s defense lawyers’ communications were subject to the wire tap
He also said that the allegations themselves have proven to be "false."
“Even if the state isn’t going to use the information
we still need to know the extent to which they violated
they intercepted and monitored attorney-client communications
and communications that are protected by the ..
Assistant State Attorney Sarah Kathryn Dugan told Everett that prosecutors got a “lead” last fall that led to “this new discovery” in the Adelson case
“We conducted this investigation and followed that investigation to its conclusion,” she said
“That obviously has resulted in some new discovery in these wire calls.”
Dugan added that the wiretap "went down" on Feb
21 and that law enforcement intercepted about 30 phone calls
“The state likely likely plans to use maybe one or two at trial and believes that the two months that the defense had from the time it was discovered to the time of trial in June should be sufficient to prepare for that portion of the trial.”
Zelman countered that more than 32 hours of calls were captured by the wiretap and that the defense hasn’t had time to review even two hours of the calls
“There’s not enough time for us to analyze this new information, synthesize it and prepare appropriate motions,” he said. “We’ve spent the last three weeks dealing with this, as opposed to finalizing motions in limine.”
Everett asked Dugan whether the state would suffer any prejudice were the trial to be delayed
conspiracy and solicitation in the 2014 contract killing of FSU law professor Dan Markel
She was supposed to go on trial in September 2024
but that proceeding blew up on the first day of jury selection
bowed out over conflicts involving his previous representation of her son
who was convicted in 2023 on the same charges his mother faces and sentenced to life in prison
Everett later disqualified two other attorneys from representing Adelson
The June trial date was set after Adelson hired her current lawyers
Zelman also said the defense is wading through more than 100,000 Adelson-related emails that it received over the past few weeks
Dugan said those emails consist of “redacted privileged communications” between Adelson and her previous attorneys and that they have never been seen by prosecutors and won’t be used at trial
But Zelman said some of the emails could pertain to Donna Adelson’s decision to try to fly to Vietnam in 2023 shortly after her son
Adelson was arrested at Miami International Airport as she tried to board the flight with her husband
Dugan mentioned during the hearing that the state had subpoenaed Harvey Adelon’s account on Zelle
a noted Tallahassee defense attorney and former federal prosecutor
said the new investigation marked a significant development in the case and would likely lead to a continuance
an informant or someone gave the state information that there was maybe obstruction
tampering with a witness or other crimes involved
He noted that a judge signed off on the wiretap after prosecutors filed affidavits explaining that they couldn’t get the information any other way
privileged attorney-client conversations are supposed to be filtered out
the judge is going to have no choice but to give a continuance,” Jansen said
“Because when (the defense) tells the judge we can’t be prepared and we can’t file motions
that’s a lack of due process for the defendant
the 1st District Court of Appeal ruled against the defense in its attempt to boot Everett off the case
The defense last month filed motions in state court to disqualify Everett
the defense appealed that decision to the 1st DCA
The appellate court on April 28 ruled against a motion to determine confidentiality
calling it “overly broad.” The court allowed the defense to file an amended motion
signed an order during Wednesday's hearing to unseal documents and recordings from the wiretap for the limited purpose of the state providing those items to the defense through discovery
The records will remain sealed for all other purposes

As City Council members probe allegations surrounding an “illegal gun registry” at Jacksonville City Hall
the Mayor’s Office is declining to speak after being asked to appear voluntarily
What is known: There has been a requirement since 2023 for people carrying guns into Jacksonville’s public buildings to put their names
addresses and identifying information on what critics are dubbing a gun registry
What isn’t known fully: who was responsible for said registry
The Mayor’s Office isn’t saying much
And City Council members want to probe it internally
The City Council Rules Committee explored that question
The General Counsel talked to legislators about the registry
which allegedly was maintained for nearly two years at both City Hall and the Yates Building by First Coast Security
Rules Chair Nick Howland cited Florida Statutes 790.335
noting these actions could lead to a third degree felony and a $5 million fine
General Counsel Michael Fackler noted potential “serious consequences” for breach of the law
and said the Mayor’s Office was made aware of the issue on April 21 of this year
A day later, subpoenas were served on the Mayor’s Office’s outside counsel at the Bedell Firm, which employs his father-in-law Hank Coxe
Fackler believes it is an investigative subpoena
because criminal lawyers were needed for “the full panoply” of possibilities
“There are potentially significant sanctions as a result of the investigation,” he said
Matt Carlucci wondered if the “tough little Mayor” was “guilty” and if Deegan initiated the registry; Fackler noted the investigation is “ongoing.”
“I don’t get the feeling that this is something she blindly went into to enforce,” he said
“I had a feeling there was no guilt yet because the due process of law hasn’t been exercised yet.”
He believes it’s “extremely unfair” that people say Deegan is guilty
because she hasn’t “had a chance to prove her innocence,” and urged people to be “careful” before blaming her for a practice underway for nearly two years since her inauguration
saying the city charter allows for Council subpoenas
a salient fact given that the Mayor’s Office did not voluntarily attend the meeting
“We clearly have the ability to investigate this,” Salem said
likening it to the JEA sale attempt that was probed half a decade ago
who has been at odds with legislators since soon after they confirmed him in 2023
urged the City Council not to investigate the issue
Jimmy Peluso said he was disappointed that Howland talked to the media
saying a “shade” meeting was more appropriate
a shade meeting was held to discuss the permitless carry law that went into effect at the beginning of that month and “what this government was going to do” about “the security plan.”
It’s just not,” said the strong ally of the executive branch
who claimed no one objected to the list of gun owners back then
“We learned about it in 2023 and none of you said anything
This is how I know it’s a total sham,” Peluso said
“I’d caution us to be careful about who knew what when,” Fackler said
given the statute and the opening for “criminal or civil liability” if people spoke about this on the public record
the General Counsel of Florida Carry who is known for his staunch defense of the Second Amendment
was one of several citizens who criticized the list of lawful gun owners exercising their permitless carry rights
He urged a “full and complete” probe by the State Attorney
and wants the City Council to crack down on the “felonious conduct” that abridged citizens’ rights to attend public meetings and enter public buildings without putting their names on a list
Attorney General James Uthmeier and former Mayor Lenny Curry have spoken out against the alleged list making
The Mayor has said the “policy in question was created and written before Mayor Deegan took office.”

Distinguished Professor Emerita in the History of Consciousness Department
received two international honors for her impact not just within academia
Haraway was named the recipient of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia
curator Carlo Ratti called her “one of the most influential voices in contemporary thought,” praising her unique ability to imagine hybrid futures in which the natural
and the collective are not separate spheres
offers “alternative worlds” and cultivates “new kin”—concepts now rippling into architecture
It is a singular honor in a space traditionally dominated by architects
and a striking testament to the imaginative reach of feminist science and technology studies
Haraway was also named a recipient of the 2025 Erasmus Prize
one of Europe’s most prestigious recognitions for contributions to culture
These twin honors—infused with celebration and urgency—come at a moment when Haraway herself continues to emphasize the role of collectivity
and interdisciplinary scholarship in the struggle against rising authoritarianism
They bring home to me forcefully the strength of our collaborative and transdisciplinary networks of thinking and feeling in hard times
when I’m not shouting the schutzhund dog-training slogan
the McHenry Library Special Collections & Archives will host “THICK
SQUIGGLY & GENERATIVE: A Conversation with Donna Haraway,” featuring Haraway in conversation with three of her former graduate students——Chela Sandoval (Chicana Studies
All four thinkers are rooted in the History of Consciousness program

co-organized by the Center for Archival Research and Training (CART) and CART Fellow Annika Berry (UCSC Literature PhD Candidate)
will revisit those years—and the interdisciplinary ecosystem that made them possible
The conversation promises to map the “generative entanglements” of ideas and friendships that have animated decades of scholarship—and to affirm
and collectivity” are essential tools for navigating the urgencies of the 21st century.
This event also marks the public opening of the Donna Haraway Papers
newly processed and now available for research at McHenry Library
These archives offer future scholars a tactile connection to Haraway’s process—her marginalia
and provocations—a vital inheritance for students
Humanities Dean Jasmine Alinder praised the way Haraway’s work bridges disciplines
Donna Haraway disregards the false boundaries that so often divide the humanities from science
collective imagination to confront ecological crisis
her scholarship offers a model of how interdisciplinary thinking can be both rigorous and radically hopeful
These international honors remind us that the humanities are not only relevant—they are indispensable.”

It was also very interesting and memorable for lots of good reasons
There was also the reality of loss for many people who didn't get to the Derby."
Brothers said she loves the immediacy of her horseback reporting
"I'm in a position to talk to the jockey right after the race
while they're still in their heart and before they have a chance to really start to intellectualize what happened," she said
My first question is never going to be tell me about your trip
We try to capture that (emotion) and bring it into the living rooms of people who are watching across the United States and elsewhere."
"one of the things that Donna tries to do is make 'em cry right away
which is easy to do after winning the Kentucky Derby."
The most memorable interviews for Brothers
"are probably the ones that are memorable for the viewers
who is nothing but raw emotion and doesn't know how to be anything other than raw emotion
He really expresses what is coursing through his veins."
With his first win in 2007 with Street Sense
"he started crying about his mama and daddy not being able to be there
and (to) see what he's accomplished with his life
Calvin got invited to the White House to meet the queen."
Brothers said she learned from that interview
the reason why it was the most memorable was because of his raw emotion," she said
"I sort of forgot the questions that I had intended to ask him
My takeaway from that was to make it a conversation
Made it feel more like people got a sit in on a conversation between two people that wasn't staged and wasn't necessarily meant for television -- but it was great television."
Brothers said she's also experienced many times where the broadcast plan didn't go to script
Derby winner Funny Cide was stabled on the backstretch instead of in the stakes barn.
Rain and problems positioning a satellite being used by NBC atop the grandstand got in the way
but I assure you I was there the whole time," she said

Joann: My deepest sympathies…I had the pleasure of working with Donna for a short time at CJ where she was a consummate professional
Our softball team was the only coed team in CJ but held its own against competition
I vividly remember one shining moment when an opposing player made an inappropriate comment to her
She was playing shortstop & knee braced
During the game he tried to stretch a hit into double; but there was Donna at second base who flattened him
Upon turning towards me she gave me that Donna look
and blithely announced “two down.” Priceless!!
My deepest sympathy Joann- I will miss my “TSC” friend and her quick wit and great come-backs
Donna was always a step (or two or three) ahead of me with her great come-backs
She was a deep thinker and very sage with a huge heart
I am grateful I got to meet her and know her just a little
I will never forget all of our serious conversations and all our laughs we shared for the many years we worked together
I had the privilege of playing basketball with Donna at DHS
She was an outstanding player and teammate
I always thanked her profusely and apologized just the same
a lot of other people of Donna’s stature could
gotten pretty angry and frustrated with me
She could see I wasn’t intentionally trying to be careless or that I wasn’t intelligent
She just recognized that I legitimately needed a little extra help or clarification here and there
She didn’t want me to feel badly about myself
I would write them down and then I wouldn’t have to ask her about those issues again
Despite how absolutely insanely busy she was
she took the time to help make me better at my job
