Pittsburgh Regional Transit and Dormont are teaming up to try their hands at land development
The transit agency and borough announced Tuesday they want developers to submit qualifications and their concepts for how to use 2.5 acres adjacent to Dormont Junction
a stop for nearly 100,000 bus and light rail passengers every year
The two would be partners in developing a “lively mixed-used and mixed-income community” to improve the neighborhood around West Liberty Avenue and increase transit ridership
Seeking a developer is the next step in plans PRT and Dormont have been working on for more than five years to upgrade the transit station and use excess property at the site for transit-oriented development
but the final design for the station could be adapted to work with the developer’s needs
PRT spokesman Andrew Carr said in an email
PRT received a $500,000 federal grant to help with the redesign of the station
Initial plans called for moving the entrance to the center of the site to make it more accessible from West Liberty and Biltmore avenues and covering the inbound and outbound waiting areas with a roof
The concept called for using excess land for several small buildings with commercial businesses on the first floor and apartments or offices on upper floors
Carr said the project is moving toward final design
and construction could begin in May 2026 if it is included in the agency’s capital budget for next year and it receives environmental clearances
The agency will review proposals from developers and expects to choose one this fall
The additional development likely would be done after station renovations are completed
“PRT and the borough will work with the development team and the community to identify the best fit for the site,” Carr said
“Ideally there is vision of one big concept
but we are open to working with the development team on the best course of action for the site.”
Dormont Council President Jen Mazzocco said the project is “extremely important” to the borough
“Not only will it bring new residents who will ride the Red Line and 41 bus route
but it will also help us redevelop the West Liberty Avenue corridor
with new small businesses and a people-centered streetscape,” she said

Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) and Dormont Borough are jointly seeking a partner to transform two parking lots along the Red Line into a mixed-used and mixed-income community to grow the neighborhood and increase transit ridership.
Developers are encouraged to submit their qualifications and concepts for the 2.5-acre site next to Dormont Junction by May 26
PRT notes nearly 100,000 riders use Dormont Junction yearly.
“We’re very excited about this project
It has the potential to become a true win-win that brings more riders to our system and adds to the vibrancy of Dormont,” said PRT CEO Katharine Kelleman
“We’re eager to hear from developers to help make this dream a reality.”
PRT notes the project would be the first joint development project under PRT’s current transit-oriented development (TOD) program
increase transit ridership and promote smart growth throughout Allegheny County
"This development is extremely important to Dormont
Not only will it bring new residents who will ride the Red Line and 41 bus route
with new small businesses and a people-centered streetscape," said Dormont Council President Jen Mazzocco.
PRT says the project would also provide them with a new source of revenue in the form of developer lease payments
The agency notes it studied the opportunity to redevelop the site and engaged the community in 2019
PRT secured a $500,000 federal grant to redesign and reconstruct the nearly 30-year-old station to make it safer and more accessible.

Justin Fabus will be able to consider himself an international country artist
The Dormont native, currently based in Atlanta, will be making his first trip out of the country to play a pair of shows April 4 and 5 at the Lil’ Nashville Country Bar in London
“To be able to come over there and be one of the first artists from the states to play there is an honor,” Fabus
“I’m so fortunate to have these opportunities
and I’m really looking forward to getting over there and showcasing a little bit of Pittsburgh and show them some yinzer side of things and obviously bring the sound of Nashville there
and I couldn’t be more honored.”
he’ll be working on new music over there with Jake Curran
the band director and lead guitarist for Niall Horan (One Direction)
Fabus has more work underway in Nashville with his songwriting collaborator Erik Halbig
as well as a trip planned to work with another producer in New York
“All these guys that I’m working with are kind of dream collaborators,” Fabus said
So I’m excited to see what everything turns out to be.”
just the latest career milestone of the past few years
“It’s hard for me not to look back and be like
“It just proves that if you want something hard enough and you believe in it — I’m a very big proponent and believer of manifesting things — and I don’t really believe in luck
I believe you make opportunities for yourself and you make things happen for yourself and you can call that luck
“I’ve been incredibly fortunate
and it’s only the tip of the iceberg
but I like to joke that I’m the best-kept secret out of Pittsburgh
because my name is a lot bigger outside of Pittsburgh
“But hopefully I come back and I’ll headline the arena one day or the stadium one day or the amphitheater
I’ve been able to open up at the arena
I’ve been able to open up shows at Star Lake
We’re going to keep chasing the dream.”
who will play a show Friday night at Jergel’s
his song “4x6” and his song “7 & 7”:
Did you find it hard to break out in country music coming from Pittsburgh
or was that really not an obstacle for you
like I never wanted to be like a yokel local
There’s a ton of amazing artists from Pittsburgh that really don’t get the spotlight or the recognition that they deserve
I think that it’s obviously not a music town; it’s more a sports town
So if you’re a cover band or a tribute band in Pittsburgh
But original music isn’t very celebrated unfortunately
and there’s a lot of people that are set in their own ways
so you can only get to a certain point in Pittsburgh unfortunately
I’ve always had the mentality where I didn’t want to be like the local legend or the local yokel
I’m very proud to be from Pittsburgh
I love coming back and playing in Pittsburgh
I wanted to play all over and bring that Pittsburgh mentality to other states and now other countries
It’s funny when I have gone and performed
like when I first started performing in Nashville and just outside of Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh
‘Where are you from?’ ‘Are you from Australia or something like that’ — because of my yinzer accent
‘Who is this (expletive)?’ (laughs) ‘Where did this dude come from?’
“Even though I’ve been doing country music for almost 15
I still to this day get those trolls online
but just because you’re country music
that doesn’t mean that you’re raised on a farm
and it doesn’t get more blue collar than the city of Pittsburgh
and we don’t take any (crap) from anybody
you also had the song “4x6” and with that one
so is that sort of a requirement as a country artist to write about something like that
it’s always kind of about how the guy screwed up and how he lost the love of his life
but I’ve always been able to write from more of a center of loss
maybe just the things that I’ve gone through
unfortunately in the world that we live in
it’s easier to relate to those things than to relate to sunshine and rainbows
everybody’s going through some kind of battle
So I think it’s easier to relate to songs that come from a trying place and come from a heartfelt place instead of saying it’s a beautiful day or it’s an I got sunshine kind of thing
but I think the majority of the people don’t
“7&7” is about your battle with alcohol
It wasn’t a tough song to write because I haven’t drank whiskey
I still dabble in alcohol from time to time
but I don’t have that problem anymore
But I had a real problem with whiskey and 7 (Up)
I don’t know if that’s necessarily true
but I used to drink Seagram’s Seven and 7 Up or Seagram’s Seven and water
And people that haven’t seen me for a while and maybe buy me a drink will buy me that
(laughs) So it just got to a point where I was drinking every day and and it became an issue and then that turned into me necessarily — I wouldn’t call it an issue — I started dabbling
I was doing cocaine to get through the next day because I would get so drunk
I would drink all day or I would drink all night and then like at 6 or 7 o’clock in the morning I’d have to go downtown when I lived in Pittsburgh and work downtown
So it’s like I’d be so drunk or really have a crazy buzz
So I would do a line or two of coke so then that would kind of mask the alcohol for the time being
I did it to kind of just straighten my (butt) up so I could get through the day so I didn’t feel like (crap) from the hangover
But what people don’t sometimes understand that haven’t lived that life
so it just makes you feel like you’re not hung over for the time being
It makes you just feel like you’re bouncing off the walls
what a lot of people don’t realize is when the alcohol runs out and the cocaine runs out
So that’s what “7 & 7” is about
It’s just about really living on the edge
And seven is supposed to be a lucky number
obviously it wasn’t lucky for me and it definitely made some dark times
is it something that I really want to indulge on a public level because it’s obviously not one of my finer moments
it’s not something I’m proud of
I wouldn’t say I’m embarrassed about it because we all go through trying times and it got to where I am today
got a great song out of it and so it was more of like
And what’s funny is the first line is “I did cocaine to get through the hangovers.” That’s kind of where that song took off
that video has over 1.2 million views because there’s a lot of people that were like
no one does those things.” And then there’s the other side of people that have done it and they’re like
You’ve obviously never done that.” It’s a thing that people do
… But I don’t recommend that lifestyle by any means
And the way I look at it is if I can prevent somebody
if I can prevent one or two people from going down that road
I think that a lot of people struggle with addiction
whether it’s alcohol or drugs or women or sex or anything
writing it was therapeutic and I think it’s one of my best well-written songs
And it’s one of the reasons that I’m going over to England
there’s a silver lining to that time in my life where I was really going through a hard time
And now I came up on the other end and now I can kind of shed maybe some light on those things and kind of caution people about it

Federal officials have begun the process to deport a Mexican national charged with a fatal hit-and-run crash Sept
Allegheny County Police charged Saul Rivera-Ramirez on Sunday with homicide by vehicle
accident involving death by an unlicensed driver and driving without a license
after they say he crashed into motorcyclist Christian Sluka
Rivera-Ramirez was initially identified as an Etna resident
Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement filed a sworn affidavit Thursday asserting that he is a Mexican national
They are charging him with illegal entry into the country
Court documents show he was prosecuted for illegal entry in February 2019 after crossing the southern border near Naco
The federal criminal complaint does not detail how Ramirez-Rivera reentered the U.S
police said Sluka was at a red light near the intersection of Pioneer and West Liberty avenues in Dormont when he was struck by Ramirez-Rivera’s Ford Taurus
his wife and two children were then seen on surveillance video getting out of the car and leaving the crash scene
A court date on the federal charges was not available

Dormont police say they’re stepping up patrols near Kelton Avenue after reports of 10 to 12 car break-ins there over the weekend
Residents reported the break-ins Saturday and Sunday on and around Delwood
The most common item stolen was loose change
No valuables or guns appeared to be stolen
The individuals who broke into the vehicles didn’t appear to target particular residents or specific types of cars
“We absolutely are increasing patrols in the area and trying to be more visible,” Barnes told TribLive
If residents have doorbell camera footage that might have captured the thefts
they are asked to call Dormont police at 412-561-8900
Christian Sluka played multiple instruments in his band
adored his cats and spent much of his time caring for and mentoring his three younger brothers
When he was killed last year while riding his motorcycle in Dormont
it left an emotional and physical void for his loved ones
“I feel like I lost a part of myself,” Sluka’s aunt
“I know what happened was an accident,” she said
“I know you didn’t mean to do what happened.”
pleaded guilty Monday to homicide by vehicle
being involved in an accident causing death
reckless driving and driving without a license
He was ordered to serve two to four years in prison as part of a plea agreement
is also expected to be deported based on the charges
He had a previous conviction in federal court in Arizona in February 2019 for unlawfully entering the United States near Naco
but subsequently re-entered the country illegally
He is being held in the Allegheny County Jail
in the northbound lane of West Liberty Avenue when a Ford Taurus rear-ended the bike and forced it into oncoming traffic
Sluka was thrown from the motorcycle and sustained severe head injuries
police said video surveillance showed Rivera-Ramirez and his wife exiting the car with their two children
Rivera-Ramirez told police that the car he was driving was struck by another car
He said he and his wife got the children out because the vehicle was smoking
He admitted to police he saw Sluka lying on the street but did not stop to help him
Goisse told Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Kevin G
“I was there when Christian was born,” she said
I wanted someone to hold his hand and kiss his forehead and tell him he was loved.”
“Every word that came out of his mouth was said with respect,’ he said
said that Christian picked his brothers up every weekend and took them to his house
take out the garbage and be a responsible young man
“I hope you realize what you did to my family,” Jonah told the defendant
You stared at his lifeless body and walked away
“I don’t understand how a man can do that.”
Defense attorney Tirza Ann Kyes said her client has been remorseful since she met him
He turned himself in and cooperated with the investigation
“He knows these charges will deport him and will separate him from his children and that he will not be able to return to the United States,” she said
spoke in Spanish and apologized through an interpreter
“I ask for forgiveness of the family,” he said

PA — Life is all about seizing opportunities
and Mike and Mandi Mills believe they recent came upon a significant one right in the heart of their community
they had walked past Knossos Gyros many times
they never thought they would end up owning the popular eatery that has been a Potomac Avenue staple for 45 years
"I was just looking around on Facebook and I ended up seeing the posts that the owners were interested in selling," Mike Mills told Patch
"So I contacted them and I said I'd love to meet with you and talk about buying it."
and Mills expects to reopen a new and refreshed Knossos next month
I'm extremely excited because of the history of the place," he said
"I really want this to be a community-driven establishment."
Though Mills most recently has worked in the nonprofit field
he has extensive experience in the hospitality business
The central Pennsylvania native started out as a bartender at several chain restaurants and Station Square nightclubs
He also worked with high-profile Pittsburgh restaurateur Richard DeShantz
developing bar programs for such notable Downtown eateries as Meat & Potatoes and Butcher and the Rye
Mills also spent time at Gaucho Parrilla Argentina
Now it's time for Mike and Mandi - an experienced social worker - to put their spin on Knossos Gyros
The menu will not be considerably different
but Mike Mills said he is experimenting with tzatziki sauce "to add a little flair to it." Ice cream definitely will be available and Mills hopes to offer desserts as well
"I'm looking at making this place less of a restaurant and more a place with its own identity - a place where you can sit
"We're trying to capture almost that coffee shop-cafe kind of vibe."
Mills this week launched the restaurant website and plans to post the menu and opening date soon

PA — Four Keystone Oaks School District teams composed of 28 students will participate in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals
an international competition celebrating creativity
The finals will be held next month at Michigan State University and include teams from nations such as Germany
“This is an incredible honor for our students,” said Jessica Dobson
Keystone Oaks Odyssey of the Mind coordinator
“They’ve worked so hard to solve complex problems using creativity and teamwork
they get to represent not just our district
but our entire region on the world stage.”
Odyssey of the Mind is an international program that fosters creative problem-solving through engineering
Keystone Oaks’ teams advanced by competing in regional and state tournaments
facing off against over 300 teams statewide
Dobson said the district is now fundraising to cover $25,000 in travel, lodging, and competition expenses to ensure every student has the chance to go. The district is encouraging community members and local businesses to support by the effort making a tax-deductible donation here or contribute in-kind donations such as gift cards
but these kids are doing extraordinary things,” Dobson
“This trip is about more than competing — it’s about showing that creativity
and community support can take you anywhere.”
On April 13, 2011, a fire occurred at the home of Michael Dougherty in Warren County, Missouri
Dougherty sued Dormont Manufacturing and an installer of the gas appliance connector that the company manufactured
Dougherty alleged that lightning struck near his home and traveled along a fire pit onto a Dormont gas appliance connector connected to a gas shutoff valve on a propane tank
The gas appliance connector perforated from the electrical current and leaked gas
Dougherty claimed to have incurred over $600,000 in damages from a fire that destroyed his home
alleged that Dormont’s gas appliance connector was defective
unreasonably dangerous in design and lacked sufficient warnings
It also alleged that the installation was negligently performed
Auto Owners would have brought this lawsuit
the case must be brought in the name of the homeowner
Dormont served Auto Owners with a non-party subpoena
Dormont sought records from Auto Owners concerning any claims that it had received from lightning strike damages to residential buildings from piping systems (not gas appliance connectors) where Auto Owners took the position that the gas piping was the cause of the fire damage
the gas piping was defective in design and the installation was done negligently
Dormont also sought any claims Auto Owners had received from lightning strikes where the electrical system failed and/or the security system failed to properly notify local authorities
Dormont sought records in the eight states surrounding Missouri from 2012 to 2015
Auto Owners responded to this subpoena with objections
and Auto Owners produced the claims file for this loss with certain portions redacted
The parties filed written briefs on the issue
Dormont argued that failures to gas appliance connectors from lightning strikes are exceedingly rare; otherwise
Claims from gas piping failures may be more prevalent
Auto Owners primarily responded by arguing that the requests were unduly burdensome and not relevant to this loss
The trial court granted Dormont’s motion to compel with certain minor modifications to the requests for records
Auto Owners then sought appellate relief called a writ of prohibition
essentially asking the Missouri Court of Appeals to overrule the trial court and not allow the discovery Dormont requested
so it sought relief from the Missouri Supreme Court and lost there as well
so the company would have to produce the records requested
Dougherty dismissed the lawsuit in August 2021 in state court to avoid having to produce the records that Dormont requested
Dougherty then filed a suit against Dormont in federal district court in 2022
Dormont then served a similar non-party subpoena to Auto Owners
This subpoena ultimately resulted in a motion before the court to compel the documents Dormont requested
The district court provided an analysis of the competing interests in the case
It is important to note that the court did not look to what was decided in the state courts of Missouri
The law of the case would provide that a court reviewing this motion to compel would look to the state court decisions and follow suit
But the law of the case does not apply where state court rulings are from a lawsuit separate from the federal lawsuit
the federal court had to make its own records on the approximate document requests Dormont was making to Auto Owners
the court ordered Auto Owners to produce materials related to gas piping failures from lightning strikes that resulted in damage claims
as well as claims related to electrical system and security system failures as noted above
within a similar geographic region and from 2012 to 2015
Auto Owners raised the white flag and voluntarily dismissed the lawsuit against Dormont
The insurance company may have dismissed the suit because producing these other claims could have defeated its case against Dormont
Auto Owners also argued the cost to gather this information was unduly burdensome
so that may also have been a reason why it dismissed the lawsuit
and it may provide a roadmap for a similar strategy in other cases

Police have arrested the driver of a car that crashed into a motorcycle late Saturday in Dormont
Allegheny County police identified the driver of the Ford Taurus as Saul Rivera-Ramirez
He is charged with homicide by vehicle and lack of a valid driver’s license
near the intersection of Pioneer and West Liberty avenues in Dormont
was critically injured and died at UPMC Mercy hospital in Pittsburgh of blunt force trauma to the head
Surveillance camera footage of the crash shows the motorcycle sitting at a red light in the northbound lane of West Liberty when the northbound Taurus strikes it
forcing it into oncoming southbound traffic
according to a criminal complaint filed by county police
Police said additional footage shows Sluka being thrown from the motorcycle to the ground and a man and woman exiting the Taurus and walking away from the scene with two young children
An examination of the Taurus revealed it had a license plate not issued to it and that Sluka apparently came into contact with the windshield during the crash
Rivera-Ramirez admitted to driving the Taurus while heading home with his wife and two children at the time of the crash
He told police his car was hit by another vehicle and his family exited the car because it began smoking
Rivera-Ramirez said he saw a man lying on the street as they were walking away from the car
Police said Rivera-Ramirez didn’t attempt to help Sluka and no one in the car called 911 to report the crash
Camera footage indicated the defendant didn’t apply his brakes before the collision
Rivera-Ramirez was placed in the Allegheny County Jail after being denied bail at a Sunday arraignment
Anyone with information is asked to call the county police tip line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS
