A soldier comes face to face with another he has killed
aghast to recognise his dead opponent’s humanity
Vergissmeinnicht by Keith Douglas (1920-1944) is a poem that continually shakes and rebuilds its own lyric foundations
It’s narrated by a British soldier in the second world war
whose unit is returning three weeks later to the scene of a battle to recover the spoils
The body of the German soldier is discovered in a line that
always reminds me of the opening of Wilfred Owen’s 1918 poem Futility (“Move him into the sun …”)
But Douglas instantly fights off any such nostalgic softening of the scene
The verse jolts along with the disturbed rhythm and auditory clunk (“gone”
A new reader might expect from the first line that Douglas has planned a poem
an illusion soon dispelled by the subsequent choppy tetrameters
no peaceful sleep to be construed from the scene of “the soldier sprawling in the sun”
Still in stanza two the rhymes play around with the assonance set up earlier
There’s a looming non-sentence beginning “The frowning barrel of his gun” and rhythmic security shaken by the five syllables of “overshadowing”
As the narrator looks back to “that day” he remembers “he hit my tank with one / like the entry of a demon”
“One” is probably the slang euphemism for a round of fire
So now we know that the narrator has narrowly avoided being killed by the dead German
We follow his stare into the shallow grave of the abandoned weapons
and see the “dishonoured picture” of Steffi
“Dishonoured” is a fine word-choice: it “translates” an idea of the sexual mistreatment of women into a new context: war is the agent of her dishonour
“Vergissmeinnicht” in German means the flower “forget-me-not” – it implies the request “forget me not”” (“vergiss mich nicht”) but it’s the flower which conveys the message
Impending pathos remains under the control of clear-eyed observation
There’s a new rhyme-scheme for this quatrain
The beauty of the last two lines owes much to the use of the plain word “put”: anything more precise – “written”
Resuming the first-person plural pronoun in stanza four
in the hesitation of “almost” in the opening line
“We see him almost with content …” The image of “his own equipment / that’s hard and good when he’s decayed” brings us
after a fresh moment of pathos in the image of a weeping Steffi
Those three lines noting his fly-black skin
“paper eye” and “burst stomach like a cave” are both spare and grim
I’ve sometimes wondered if he draws a little too near to sweetening the anguish
is achieved by the rhyme: “singled” comes as a pertinent surprise
as if death were another soldier who has fixed the soldier in his sights and accurately dispatched him
The “frowning barrel” of the gun still casts its long shadow
Douglas’s unsurprising revelation that “the lover and killer” are inhabitants of one body sustains the poem’s balanced realism
and allows the speaker his more emotional recognition of the lover’s “mortal hurt”

tears and photos as Kharissa Anderson graduated Thursday
She didn’t walk across a high school stage or wear a cap and gown
As the newest graduate of the Douglas County Treatment Court program
she sat in a courtroom to celebrate her success
“You have come so far from when we first met
… I’m so proud of you," said Anderson’s best friend
said she jumped into the program with both feet June 1
“My kids deserve the best version of me," she said
"and I’m so happy to be back in their lives and be a mom again and accomplish all these things I thought I had to give up on because I thought I was too old."
Anderson ticked off the list of accomplishments made since she started the program
I pay my bills … and it feels amazing because I have quite a past where I made many
McMullin was the one who told Anderson about treatment court
“I was in jail at the time and completely lost in life,” Anderson said
I had been going down the wrong road for a long time.”
“I kind of let go in life and went downhill,” she said
She became addicted to methamphetamine and was convicted of numerous crimes in Douglas County Circuit Court
she was sentenced to five years of prison and five years of extended supervision after being convicted of multiple charges
party to burglary and possession of methamphetamine
“I never had a good relationship with the courts
and they tell me they’re proud of me and I’m not running and hiding or doing something wrong
"And it feels really good because I don’t think they’re out to get me and I don’t think anything like that now
They’re there for people … it’s all different.”
Anderson participated in drug treatment while in prison
“but you’re not faced with all these things on a day-to-day basis where you have to do it.”
“And I would not have done it without this program
“It’s structured the way it is for a reason I needed the accountability
I needed to learn different ways to think and different coping skills and I did.”
Circuit Court Judge Kelly Thimm applauded her growth
and you know a lot of things had to change," Thimm said
And I think where you are today is an inspiration for other people because
so she'll still be in touch with the court
She can also continue to take part in sober activities offered through the program
“Nobody wants to be an addict," Anderson said
I don’t believe anybody wants the life they’re living in that moment
But sometimes you feel hopeless and you don’t know where to go and what to do and that’s where I was at that point when I entered that program.”
said she encourages participants to advocate for themselves when searching for a job or housing and share about the steps they're making in the program
"We're a whole lot more than the worst decision we ever made," Prokosch said
"Just giving people an opportunity is huge
It can make a difference between their being successful and not."
The program is seeking donations to support sober activities
Venues where participants can do community service are also sought

The Douglas and Ethel Watt Critics’ Choice Award is bestowed by the journalists of the Chita Rivera Awards Broadway judging committee
David Neumann, who choreographed this season’s Swept Away on Broadway, and won the Chita Rivera Award and was nominated for the Tony Award for choreographing Hadestown, will receive the Douglas and Ethel Watt Critics Choice Award at the 2025 Chita Rivera Awards
The Douglas and Ethel Watt Critics’ Choice Award is bestowed by the journalists of the Chita Rivera Awards Broadway judging committee
to recognize outstanding work that falls outside the framework of the original categories
It is named for the longtime Daily News theater critic Douglas Watt and his wife Ethel
“Adroitly deploying an ensemble in the cramped space of a realistic shipboard set
Neumann sent his crew flying on ropes and pounding into the deck
filling the stage with the sweaty physicality of 19th-century working sailors
he created a remarkable tableau that filled the Longacre proscenium from top to bottom with breathtaking imagery
We are honored to give David this well deserved recognition.”
The 2025 Chita Rivera Awards will be presented on May 19 at 7:30pm at the NYU Skirball (566 LaGuardia Place off Washington Square Park), and produced by Joe Lanteri, Founder and Executive Director of the New York City Dance Alliance Foundation, Inc. in conjunction with Patricia Watt
This year, the Chita Rivera Awards will be honoring Ben Vereen with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
The 40th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards – the only New York theatre award to exclusively honor Outstanding Achievement Off-Broadway – are being presented tonight, Sunday, May 4, 2025, at NYU Skirball. Check out live updates from the ceremony here!
The Broadway community is still buzzing with excitement in the wake of yesterday's Tony Award nomination announcement. Several shows celebrated their nominations with on-stage speeches during the curtain call of last night's performance.
Audra McDonald has broken a new Tony record, becoming the most-nominated performer in Broadway history. Her nomination as the iconic Mama Rose in the latest production of Gypsy marks the 11th for the performer, following her 2023 nomination for Ohio State Murders.
This morning, live from Sofitel New York, Tony Award winners Sarah Paulson and Wendell Pierce announced the nominations for the 78th Annual Tony Awards. Check out photos of the duo here!

The second event is the banquet of members and guests

The dogs are to be drawn in pairs or braces
If all 52 entries are accounted for it will necessitate running 26 braces
which will probably take all day Sunday and part of Monday

Majority favor bridge projectFrom two weeks to a month will likely elapse before the Wisconsin highway commission will report its findings on the hearing here Saturday afternoon relative to the proposed interstate bridge across the St
which was held prior to the hearing on relocation of the state trunk highway on the lake shore
bridge engineer and secretary of the commission
"The meeting is for the purpose of finding out in a general way what the project means
the sentiment of the public and whether there is sufficient sentiment for the project for the highway commission to proceed in the matter," said Mr
"If the commission decides to go farther after this hearing is considered
the matter will then be taken up with the adjoining state and an effort will be made to determine if the other state is prepared to share its proper burden of the cost."
Opinion split on road changeShould the state highway commission relocate the state highway now designated as running along the south shore of Lake Superior
13 the official state trunk road penetrating this part of Douglas county it will result in virtual adandonment of the project to build a lake shore drive right on the shore of the lake
Arguments for and against this action were heard at the hearing on the matter in the county boar room in the courthouse Saturday afternoon
Most of the arguments favored relocation of the road
which would bring more funds to be spent on the Lakeside road
maintenance engineer of the highway commission
said that although the expense of building a road right along the lake shore would be great and such a project might not be undertaken for several years
it was likely that at some future time the state legislature would gather all such projects in one group and provide for their financing

"It is for the 'home folks' and every effort is being made to have the opening an event long to be remembered by those who attend it."

SUPERIOR — Douglas County could help the city expand a program that provides land in exchange for in-fill new housing development
the Land and Development Committee recommended the county sell three undeveloped parcels of land in the city of Superior for the Vacant to Value: New Construction program
with room for a single house to be built on each
are located on the 1800 block of East Ninth Street
the 1900 block of Banks Avenue and the 1600 block of Ohio Avenue
The parcels were taken by tax deed in 2014 and were put up for sale
Serck said the city’s goal is to purchase the properties for the prices set for the parcels in 2014
The total cost for the buildable parcels would be $7,000
“We would put them in our Vacant to Value: New Construction program
which is a program where we actually give lots away and people construct on them,” Serck said
“… It’s been good to get properties back up and running again.”
The first nine of those added over $34,000 to the tax rolls in Superior
Two of the homes weren’t built at the time of last year’s assessments
If approved by the Douglas County Board on May 15
the sale would double the city’s inventory of available land for new housing development

Linda Brown Douglas returned to her alma mater to serve the community that gave her so much
her bounty of good deeds finally caught up to her when she received a 2019 C
Linda Brown Douglas has given back to the University she loves in countless ways without expecting anything in return
the director of volunteer engagement for University Development
graduated from Carolina in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism
After a successful newspaper career in Charlotte and Raleigh
she returned to her alma mater in 1998 as director of community relations — a position that called upon her to orchestrate the Tar Heel Bus Tour and invigorate the Board of Visitors that she continues to serve
When Douglas began organizing the BOV’s meeting agendas
few of the 50 members felt they were making an impact
Douglas spent time finding out what members wanted to accomplish
a typical BOV meeting attracts 150 to 180 people
“Linda could have taken what she was given and maintained the status quo,” wrote one nominator
“She is determined to leave everything better than she found it,” wrote another nominator
and her work ethic has touched the lives of students
friends and administrators throughout the University
Her institutional knowledge and willingness to always work for the common good sets Linda apart.”
when most University employees are heading for home
Douglas is just beginning her work as a campus volunteer
she has served as the primary adviser to the Kappa Omicron chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority
she is known as “Soror Douglas,” but another student gave her the nickname “Mamma Douglas,” and it stuck
the chapter had spent almost a year trying to find an adviser and was restricted to limited activities
Douglas worked with two other advisers and started from scratch
she taught members about sorority protocol and Robert’s Rules of Order
She also taught them how to apply for grants
resulting in money for outstanding projects and guest speakers
which had only received campus awards in the past

and it is the reigning National Chapter of the Year
Douglas was also named Carolina’s Adviser of the Year and the team
was named National Advisory Team of the Year
Douglas said the biggest reward for her is playing a positive part in their lives
I got to be a part of that.’ It’s almost like being a mother except you don’t have to pay the bills
When asked why she keeps demanding so much of herself
Douglas laughed and said it was the way she was raised
a close-knit black neighborhood about 10 to 15 minutes from Uptown Charlotte in the 1960s and 1970s
Everything good that has ever happened to her can be traced back to that time and place
and to the many caring adults from her church and schools who made time to reach out to her and lift her up

Combat Sports Anti-Doping (CSAD) announced today that Douglas Silva de Andrade
has accepted a 6-month period of ineligibility for a violation of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy (UFC ADP)
Silva de Andrade tested positive for the presence of furosemide
a prohibited at all times substance in the class of diuretics and masking agents on the UFC Prohibited List
from an out of competition sample collected from him on February 14
Brazil. Upon notification of this result from the laboratory to CSAD
Silva de Andrade was removed from his upcoming scheduled bout immediately after making his contracted weight on February 28
Silva de Andrade provided a dietary supplement that he was consuming leading up to his sample provision on February 14
2025. The supplement did not list furosemide on its label of listed ingredients. The supplement was shipped to and analyzed by the Sport Medicine and Research Testing Laboratory (SMRTL) in Salt Lake City
the testing and analysis laboratory of the UFC ADP. SMRTL detected furosemide in the supplement at a level consistent with the presence in Silva da Andrade’s sample. Additionally
a sealed container of the same supplement was independently procured by CSAD from Brazil and shipped to SMRTL for analysis. The independently procured and sealed supplement also contained furosemide at a level consistent with the presence of furosemide in Silva da Andrade’s sample
To ensure that UFC athletes do not consume contaminated supplements like this one that can lead to adverse findings
all UFC athletes are educated that the only dietary supplements they should consume should be 3rd party tested by one of the UFC ADP’s approved dietary supplement 3rd party certification programs. Information about 3rd party supplement testing and the UFC’s approved supplement testing programs can be found at ufcantidoping.com. While there was no evidence of the intentional use of furosemide by Silva da Andrade
he did not follow the UFC ADP directions to UFC athletes to ONLY consume approved 3rd party tested supplements.
Silva da Andrade’s 6-month suspension began on February 28
the date on which he was placed under a provisional suspension and removed from his upcoming card. Under the UFC ADP
he will be eligible to compete again in UFC events on August 28
CSAD has also provided this result and other information to the Nevada Athletic Commission
who retains jurisdiction over this case due to Silva de Andrade’s scheduled bout in Nevada at the time this sample was collected
CSAD independently administers the year-round anti-doping program for all UFC athletes. All biological sample collections and shipping under the UFC ADP are conducted by Drug Free Sport International (DFSI)
the global leader in the anti-doping industry with more than 5,000 collection personnel worldwide. All information concerning the UFC ADP
including all of its written policies and athlete test statistics
can be located at ufcantidoping.com. These policies are available in multiple languages
CSAD also makes available a reporting mechanism for known and suspected abuse of performance-enhancing drugs in UFC at the email address tipline@csad.org
