Included in the $8 million Drexel Heights bond issue are an administration and training facility and a new fire station
Voters strongly supported Drexel Heights Fire District’s request to sell $8 million in bonds for construction and improvements
The bond proposal was leading 68 percent to 32 percent in unofficial results
An unknown number of ballots were still to be counted by the county
but they weren’t expected to change the outcome
The picture was split Tuesday night in other fire district elections:
The Drexel Heights Governing Board requested that it sell $8 million in general-obligation bonds for projects including the construction of an administration and training facility
a new fire station and the remodeling of a second station
It also is seeking to replace two pumper trucks
Fire Chief Douglas Chappell said the two stations slated for replacement or renovation are “in need of safety-related enhancements to protect the firefighters who live in the stations 24 hours a day.”
The district also needs adequate training facilities for firefighters to continue to refine their knowledge and skills
Drexel Heights’ annual operating budget is about $10 million; it employs 81 firefighters and five civilian workers
The cost to each property owner will be about $30 a year for an average home in the district
The district covers 60 square miles and has about 50,000 residents
The boundaries are roughly the Tucson Mountains on the north and the Tohono O’odham Nation on the south
and South Mission Road on the east to West Valencia Road where it dead ends at the Ajo Highway on the west
The Picture Rocks Board of Directors asked for a temporary budget override for five years that would bring in about $80,000 annually to maintain services and fire trucks
Picture Rocks’ annual operating budget is $1.8 million; the district employs 22 firefighters and two civilian workers
The Avra Valley Governing Board requested to be allowed to adopt a temporary levy override for five years to generate about $120,000 annually for the district to maintain firefighter jobs
its vehicles and to purchase medical equipment and safety gear
The measure was ahead by a narrow margin with ballots still to be counted
Avra Valley’s annual operating budget is $3.9 million; it employs 42 firefighters and two civilian workers

This photo was believed to have been taken in September 1932
An early photo of Tucson’s Holy Family Catholic Church
which was built with a Katherine Drexel donation in 1912
was a devout Catholic and wealthy banker with Drexel and Co
Emma Drexel was known for her charitable work
and in addition to providing the best tutors for her daughters
she also taught her children the importance of helping others and dedication to God
on a visit to Europe after her father’s death
Pope Leo XIII suggested to Katharine that she become a missionary
she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of Mercy Convent in Pittsburgh and became Sister Katharine
In 1891 she became Mother Katharine when she took her vows and founded the “Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored People.”
Drexel met Bishop Peter Bourgade of Tucson
who invited her to visit the Tohono O’odham Indians
she went to San Xavier del Bac and spent time with the retired Archbishop John B
the namesake of Salpointe Catholic High School
Michael Indian School on land she had purchased years earlier for a mission on the Navajo Indian Reservation
Several letters and agreements between her and Bishop Henry Granjon of Tucson
show Drexel’s continued support of Native Americans in the Tucson area
she donated $1,800 “for the purpose of having said sum expended in repairing San Xavia (sic) del Bac school for Indians
A gift of $2,500 in 1912 was “to aid in the erection of a Church for the Yaqui Indians
living on the North outskirts of Tucson.” The money was used to build the Holy Family Catholic Church in 1913-14
at North Main Avenue and West University Boulevard
The church helped the growing number of residents in the Old Pascua Village
Many of Yaquis living there had fled racial persecution in Mexico
and their numbers were increasing as a result of the violence during the Mexican Revolution of 1910
A heart attack in 1935 limited Mother Katharine’s missionary travels and she remained in “prayerful retirement” until her death in 1955
Mother Katharine Drexel was canonized by Pope John Paul II and became only the second American-born individual to be named a saint
Budd Dozier deeded 320 acres of homestead land
east of the Santa Cruz River and north of the Tohono O’odham Indian Reservation
to Granjon and the Catholic Diocese of Tucson
It’s believed that part of the land was returned to Dozier because the following year a small strip of land
on the western edge of the original 320 homestead acres
1923 he recorded the Missiondale subdivision along with Drexel Road with Pima County
Marie deeded part of the land back to the Catholic Diocese of Tucson
Fred Contzen said it was quite possible his mother
had known Katharine Drexel either as a classmate in Catholic school or through the local sisters in Tucson
Note: A few sources claim the road is named after Katharine’s father
who is said to have owned land in what is now the Drexel Heights area and along the present road
But a title search of Drexel Heights and the area north and south of Drexel Road showed no land ownership by him or his banking firm
