and complex challenges are at the heart of what Americans define as the toughest jobs in the country
One in five employed respondents said you need to be “extremely tough” to do their job
Commissioned by Bosch Power Tools and conducted by Talker Research
the poll asked 2,000 Americans — including 1,000 trade workers — what comes to mind when they think of difficult professions
The results offer insight not only into which jobs are considered the most demanding
but also into what Americans value in a tough role
Descriptions of tough jobs ranged from “solving other people’s problems all day with little to no help” to “constantly making quick decisions and being stuck in stressful situations daily,” and “something that pushes my physical and mental limits.”
While many identified specific professions
nearly half of employed Americans — regardless of role — believe their job is hard
more than double the 21 percent reported by non-trade workers
A large majority — 72 percent — said trade workers are generally tougher than non-trade workers
and 81 percent of all surveyed said trade workers don’t get enough credit for the work they do
Nearly half — 49 percent — of non-trade respondents said they’d consider a career in the trades
68 percent of those who didn’t have access to trade skills courses in high school indicated they would have taken them if given the chance
Among respondents not currently working in a trade
and the majority of that group — 70 percent — said they would do it again
with 88 percent of all participants encouraging younger Americans to consider a trade as a career path
“Pursuing a career in the trades offers a variety of benefits with hands-on experiences that cultivate practical skills and provide a lifelong sense of purpose,” said Robert Hesse
regional president of Bosch Power Tools in North America
the skilled trades remain a reliable and rewarding path for more and more Americans.”
the survey also explored what trade workers want the public — and their employers — to understand about the work they do
with 57 percent of trade workers reporting up to four “close calls” on the job in the past year
nearly a third — 31 percent — said they’ve left a job site because it felt unsafe
Key improvements requested include better training on equipment (32 percent)

Upper Darby is spending $1M to hire a Drexel Hill company Upper Darby was one of more than a dozen Delaware County municipalities that depended on Crozer for EMS services for the past several decades
Prospect Medical Holdings received bankruptcy court approval Tuesday to close Crozer-Chester Medical Center
The system provided EMS services free of charge to more than a dozen Delaware County municipalities and managed about half the county’s EMS incidents last year
Under closing procedures approved by a bankruptcy judge Tuesday
EMS services will not fully terminate until May 2 and may be extended in some circumstances
Ending those services may harm EMS response in Delaware County
leading to slower response times as municipalities scramble to come up with solutions
one of Delaware County’s biggest towns and largest users of EMS services
announced Wednesday it would partner with STAT EMS Medical Transport
a Drexel Hill company that will begin work in the township on Monday
Upper Darby will pay over $1 million over the next two years for STAT to make at least two advanced life support units and one basic life support unit available 24/7
the township’s chief administrative officer
Upper Darby Mayor Edward Brown signed and authorized the agreement unilaterally under his emergency powers
The Upper Darby Township Council will need to approve any budget adjustments required to fund the agreement
“Our priority has always been the safety and well-being of our residents
This alliance with STAT will provide for that,” Brown said in a statement
through the efforts led by CAO Jones and Interim Fire Chief Brian Boyce
we were able to come up with a solution to such a critical and complex issue in a very short period.”
The Upper Darby council has for months been trying to approve a 1% income tax to bring more revenue to the township and is scheduled to vote on its third attempt next month
Jones said he was hopeful that county or state funds may be able to supplement the EMS expense
will remain operational and ambulances paid for by other municipalities will continue to travel to areas that currently rely on Crozer
But it will be up to the individual municipalities to purchase or contract for additional emergency vehicles and staffing
Though Upper Darby is paying for STAT’s services
the ambulances will travel to calls outside the township when needed
After Crozer’s closure was announced Monday
Brown called for regional collaboration on EMS
Regional collaboration and some sort of cost-sharing model remain a long-term goal as discussions continue
that we have the assurance that our residents are taken care of,” Jones said
“We’ll continue to pursue the discussion if everybody else is interested.”
a one-turn mile for sophomore fillies at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park
the Whit Beckman trainee secured the maximum allotment of 50-25-15-10-5 Kentucky Oaks qualifying points on offer and joined stablemates Simply Joking and Her Laugh as top contenders for the 'Lilies for the Fillies' on the first Friday in May at Churchill Downs.Drexel Hill
stumbled just after the break and bumped with a rival before trailing in seventh position as She’s Fascinating and Volleyballprincess dueled through splits of 23.64 seconds and :47.68 over the fast main track
Curtis urged Drexel Hill into contention into the turn and made a four-wide move to have new leader Amarth and Volleyballprincess in their sights
Drexel Hill was asked by Curtis to drop in and split rivals as the field straightened away
closing strongly as she passed Amarth in the final strides to win by three-quarter-lengths in a final time of 1:41.46
The winning effort registered a 79 Beyer Speed Figure
the move to one turn and a cutback in distance following a third-place finish in the one-mile and 70-yard Fasig-Tipton Silverbulletday on Jan
18 at Fair Grounds.“It was a little bit of a gamble on the cutback
but we got it figured out and hopefully when we get her back around two turns it won't be so gut-wrenching,” Beckman said
“The first half-mile of the race didn't go the way we were hoping between the break and her lack of enthusiasm down the backside -- it wasn't real comforting going to the turn
but it took a 180 on us and things went the right way from there.“Ben came wide around the turn and straightened out from there and those horses gave her enough room that she didn't really have to alter course
just went right through them,” Beckman added
and it all came together with that stretch run.”
The $50,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase launched her career at Woodbine with four starts over Tapeta for trainer Barbara Minshall
including a six-length graduation in November sprinting seven furlongs
Drexel Hill then joined the Beckman barn and tried a pair of one-mile and 70-yard Oaks preps at Fair Grounds
landing fifth behind the victorious Her Laugh in the Untapable in December and third to the victorious Simply Joking in the aforementioned Silverbulletday.Beckman added blinkers and a Haughton bit to Drexel Hill’s repertoire for the Silverbulletday.“Early on she wanted to pull to the inside just slightly and that kind of bit gives a little more control on the steering,” Beckman explained
she put herself in a bad spot and it was tough to get her off the rail.“We made a couple equipment adjustments in the Silverbulletday to add blinkers and a different bit,” Beckman continued
“I thought we kind of overshot the mark
she got a little too keen in the Silverbulletday and put herself really close -- closer than I anticipated
In her training between this race and the Silverbulletday we pulled the blinkers off
super relaxed and doing everything comfortably on her own
so we didn't think the blinkers were going to be necessary in the Busher.”
a half-sister to graded stakes-placed Regaled
She has banked $180,520 through a 2-2-1 career line from seven starts and is now third on the Oaks leaderboard with 57 points.Beckman noted that Drexel Hill exited the effort in good order and will ship back to Turfway Park on Monday
The next New York option for Drexel Hill would be the nine-furlong $200,000 Gazelle (G3) on April 5
a 100-50-25-15-10 Oaks qualifier.“We've got nine weeks to the Oaks and ideally
you'd like to give her another start,” Beckman said
“We'll see how she reacts when we get her back home
An extra eighth of a mile going around two turns should give her a little more time to work everything out.”Beckman said that Grantley Acres
Ryan Conner and Berkels0813’s Simply Joking [20 points] will look to extend her record to 3-for-3 in either the Fantasy (G2) [100-50-25-15-10] on March 29 at Oaklawn or the Ashland (G1) [100-50-25-15-10] on April 4 at Keeneland; while Grantley Acres’ Kentucky homebred Her Laugh [20 points] will point to the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) [100-50-25-15-10] on March 22

Good Cheer wins the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs
a win that at the same time suggested even bigger and better things might be on the horizon
Consider what unfolded in Friday's 1 1/8-mile test that plays as a classic even though it doesn't officially carry that status
Saez, who guided Secret Oath to a Kentucky Oaks victory in 2022
said Good Cheer is the top 3-year-old filly he's ridden
"She's a very special filly," Saez said
but I believe this is the best filly I've ever been on
I won the Kentucky Oaks with Secret Oath but this one
Good Cheer would start Friday's race as the 6-5 favorite, matching the morning-line favoritism she earned after extending her perfect record to six with scores in the Rachel Alexandra Stakes and Fair Grounds Oaks (both G2) in February and March at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots
Sign up for BloodHorse Daily
Those three continued their front-end battle through a half-mile in :46.78 and six furlongs in 1:11.36
Good Cheer rated in midpack before moving wide into the far turn to set up her winning rally
The early speed would fade while late-running longshots Drexel Hill and Bless the Broken took advantage to land the minor placings
who completed the race in 1:50.15 on the sealed track rated as wet fast
Even before the race as the fillies paraded before a crowd of 100,910 fans on a track inundated by a storm that had passed through about a hour before the race
the in-house camera spotted winning trainer Brad Cox intently watching a video screen in the paddock
Cox flashed a big smile for the camera.
He had plenty reason to be loose as Good Cheer calmly paraded before perking up as she spotted the familiar sight of a starting gate
Cox traces that confidence to the way Good Cheer has just put away some top fillies in her four previous stakes wins
"She's always passed the eyeball test
you're thinking 'She's coming,' and then all of a sudden—in the blink of an eye—she's three in front of them."
Oaks second-choice Quietside , who entered off back-to-back graded stakes wins at Oaklawn Park
the filly from the final crop of Malibu Moon tracked the early leaders approaching the first turn where jockey Jose Ortiz opted to try to save some ground
She would track three or four wide in the backstretch but lacked kick in the far turn and finished sixth
Gazelle Stakes (G3) winner Ballerina d'Oro bobbled at the start and was bumped
"I didn't like how far she set herself back for the first almost three-quarters of a race," said trainer Whit Beckman of Drexel Hill earning her first grade 1 placing
"But (jockey Ben Curtis) got her in a nice motion late and I was kind of having some Aqueduct flashbacks
Trainer Will Walden said Bless the Broken is a "super-good filly," after the daughter of Laoban earned her first grade 1 placing as well
Cox and Godolphin USA director of bloodstock Michael Banahan didn't commit to facing males this season as Banahan noted the many terrific races for 3-year-old fillies on the horizon
The victory is the second Kentucky Oaks win for Godolphin, which after finding this race to be a bit elusive now has won it with a pair of homebreds in recent years following Pretty Mischievous in 2023
It's a meaningful race for Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
as well as the United States team as many made the short trip from Lexington to Louisville
"He puts a lot of resources into it," Banahan said of Sheikh Mohammed
"These are the types of races that Godolphin wants to participate in and try to win
To have horses good enough that have opportunity to do that
that's what we're trying to do.
"We were very lucky a couple of years ago to be able to win it with Pretty Mischievous—another homebred filly
It's a fantastic program to be part of
And they're all homebred horses that we've had for the last several years winning some of these nice races
To get to the top of the mountain in the Oaks; it feels fantastic."
EberhardtGood Cheer expands her lead as she drives to the wire in the Kentucky Oaks
Good Cheer is out of two-time grade 1 winner Wedding Toast
who also has produced stakes winner Ya Hayati
Medaglia d'Oro stands for $75,000 at the farm near Lexington
He's a 26-year-old stallion who has had a rejuvenation here in the last couple of years
To come and have a another Oaks winner after he's had a couple of winners of the race before?" Banahan said before shaking his head in appreciation of the accomplishment
"It would be nice to think Good Cheer could step in the shoes of a Rachel Alexandra or something like that
Rachel Alexandra went on to earn Horse of the Year honors in 2009 on a fast track to the Racing Hall of Fame
so no one is taking for granted that Good Cheer will follow in those footsteps

With the top five finishers receiving 50-25-15-10-5
Drexel Hill (Bolt d'Oro) proved best and took home the top prize in the Busher Stakes at Aqueduct on Saturday
the filly broke out of the maiden ranks with a six-length score last fall in what was her fourth attempt at Woodbine
The filly finished a well-beaten fifth in the Untapable Stakes in New Orleans Dec
but rebounded to run a respectable third versus stablemate Simply Joking (Practical Joke) in the Silverbulletday Stakes Jan
Shedding the blinkers and sent on her way as a 5-1 shot here
Drexel Hill lacked speed from the bell and was second last up the backstretch
the dark bay began to pick off opponents entering the lane
The 3-year-old took aim at Amarath (McKinzie) who was looking to spring the upset
Drexel Hill sailed by the longshot and nabbed the Oaks points in the process
“It's an exclamation point for me,” said trainer Whit Beckman
I've spent so much time up here and it's good to come back and win one
He [Ben Curtis] was nudging her along the whole way and down the backside
so I was a little unsure if she was going to fire
Once he got her pointed outside she engaged and once she flattened out down the stretch she responded beautifully
“Generally horses that break like that and are having to be asked the whole way don't finish so well
but once he got her through the turn and she switched leads she really found another gear
It's never an easy track to close that far on and I was thrilled he was able to get her in the right spot to pick up those last couple of horses.”
The winner's dam is responsible for a 2-year-old filly by Modernist and she foaled a filly by Redesdale last year

Republican Senate candidate Dave McCormick stopped by a small business in Drexel Hill on Thursday to push back on his opponent’s premise that private companies caused the inflation that has driven up prices about 20 percent since President Joe Biden took office
And McCormick used former President Donald Trump’s recent stop at a Bucks County McDonald’s to help make his point
Bob Casey (D) has joined with the Biden administration to blame rising prices on “greedflation,” corporations somehow colluding to drive up prices rather than compete for market share
Economists have widely panned that premise
noting that if “greedy corporations” had the power drive up prices during the Biden presidency
they could have done the same during the Trump
Why wait and miss all those millions in profits
McCormick told supporters gathered at Drexel Hill Automotive
it’s “because of the weak leadership in Washington
Pennsylvania families and small businesses in our commonwealth are hurting
particularly over the last three and a half years
And we have Kamala Harris and Bob Casey’s extreme liberal policies to thank
“Their reckless spending in Washington pushed inflation through the roof
They unleashed trillions of dollars of wasteful federal spending that over stimulated the economy,” said McCormick
“They pushed an anti-energy agenda that drove up energy costs
McCormick also called Casey out for joining with progressive U.S
Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) in a letter to McDonald’s CEO CEO Chris Kempczinski
While working families are trying to make ends meet
McDonald’s and its corporate counterparts have continued to grow their profits,” Casey wrote
“This letter demonstrates a lack of understanding of our franchise business model and contains contortions of facts and many inaccuracies,” the company said in response. “Take the components of the $5 Meal Deal with McChicken
which would have cost 15 percent more in 2020 than they do today
That’s the opposite of price gouging.”
McCormick said he saw politics behind Casey’s complaints
“This week Bob Casey decided to further twist the knife
basically telling a Pennsylvania McDonald’s franchise that he’s to blame for high prices
It was a vindictive move to score political points
Casey sent a letter to the CEO of McDonald’s attacking McDonald’s for high prices,” McCormick noted
Raj Singh owns Drexel Hill Automotive and a family-owned insurance company
it’s been really tough,” Singh said
“We tried Bob Casey since 2006 and nothing changed
he’s a successful business leader and will fight to lower prices so small businesses like my business can thrive.”
was also on hand to make the case for McCormick
“Bob Casey has not stepped foot here in over six years to support any small businesses in Delaware County or Upper Darby,” Wagner said
The Casey campaign did not respond to a request for comment
