not only for his talent on the field but for the character and leadership he brings to the dugout every single day.”

the teams seemed like steadfast partners that could extend their 32-year partnership past 2031 when the American Airlines Center lease expires
with the Mavericks planning to build a basketball-only arena
and the Stars still contemplating their next move

“Patrick and I had a conversation several months ago where he expressed to me that he wants to build a new arena
We’ll build this and do all this wonderful stuff.’
“Patrick’s now done enough research and looking at these things
and he’s landed on that in order to optimize a building for basketball
that makes it difficult to play hockey in that arena
I think before he thought the two sports would play together
has changed in terms of what he wants to do.”
Gaglardi said Dumont has also told him a basketball-only arena that would benefit the Mavericks wouldn’t be advantageous for the Stars
you don’t want for your team,’” Gaglardi said
“We’re down to 11 NBA and NHL teams that share buildings now
The Mavericks hope to secure 30 to 50 acres of land in the city of Dallas within the next 12 months to begin building their new arena that they’d move into ahead of the 2031-32 season
Stars President and CEO Brad Alberts told The Dallas Morning News earlier this month that the Stars’ priority is to renegotiate the lease at AAC to remain there as a single tenant after 2031
“My heart would say we should stay in the city and downtown,” he said
It’s going to have to be reimagined for another 30 years
But there’s been work done to that effect and some really cool concepts and plans
I always thought that we would be playing there post-2031.”
Alberts said the Stars have begun hearing offers from other Dallas-Fort Worth area cities to move outside of Dallas
but those discussions are in the very early stages
There are no plans for the Stars to build a new arena in Dallas
the Stars and Mavericks are set to become competitors
Having two arenas in Dallas would lead to inherent competition for concerts and other events
the Stars and Mavericks split the revenue from those third-party events
But Gaglardi said he isn’t too concerned about how a split could impact his revenue in the future
and they’re splitting the business equally
then you’re all as well off as you were,” he said
“If we were in a small market that wasn’t growing dynamically like DFW
too — it’s probably not an option to be able to have two arenas
It’s one of the most sought after third-party event markets in the world
I feel pretty confident that two buildings can both thrive.”
He’s also hopeful that there’d be more opportunities for weekend concert dates during the season if only one team was playing in the building
the Stars are still a ways away from setting final plans for their future
But Gaglardi expressed a message of gratitude
that his team at least has time to plan for what comes next
“It helps to know that your partner has come out and said
‘This is what we’re doing,’” he said of the Mavericks
‘We’re doing this.’ To have six years of runway to know where they’re going to be gives us lots of time to figure out where we’re going to be.”

A Bergen County borough's ordinance to limit the types of flags that can be flown outside the municipal building will not move forward after the mayor vetoed the council's vote
Dumont Mayor John Russell went against the council, who voted 4-2 at its Feb. 11 meeting in favor of an ordinance that stated borough flagpoles "are not intended to serve as a forum for free expression by the public." The mayor vetoed the measure three days after the vote
placing the item on the agenda at the borough council meeting Tuesday
the council could have overridden the mayor's decision by a two-thirds vote at Tuesday's meeting
But Dumont attorney Jared Geist said he was informed prior to the meeting that the council would honor the veto "and move on to more important issues needing the governing body’s more immediate attention."
The outcome resulted in applause from members of the public in attendance and marked a much different tone from last month's meeting
when the ordinance was approved following a second reading
The February vote followed more than 2½ hours of public comment in which all but two people spoke out against the measure
Many expressed specific concerns that removing the Pride flag from Borough Hall flagpoles would lead to LGBTQ+ discrimination
Geist said Tuesday that he originally recommended the ordinance to protect Dumont from potential liability when choosing flags to fly
there was no policy in place that governed the use of borough flagpoles
The attorney noted that the proposed measure did not mention the Pride flag
"nor was there intent for the ordinance to be about the Pride flag
it was to set some legal framework for how any flag would be flown on borough property."
The ordinance would have allowed the council to display any flag "as a form of government expression" but not use flagpoles "to sponsor the expression of a third party." Permitted flags included the New Jersey state flag
the Bergen County flag and flags from branches of the United States Armed Forces
Russell did not comment on his veto Tuesday but stated his opposition to the ordinance at last month's meeting
The mayor does not vote on borough matters except to break a tie among the council
we are here to serve all the people," Russell said
"I believe borough property belongs to the people
The veto was lauded by several members of the public who addressed the mayor and council following the announcement Tuesday
Dumont resident Evan Johnston thanked Russell
saying he demonstrated leadership at a time when the majority of the council and the community were at odds
"What I witnessed here is that you heard what people were telling you in this town," Johnston told the mayor
"Issues become bigger when we don’t listen to one another
I’m really proud that democracy worked in this moment."

"My understanding is Nico Harrison did not want to do this closed-door roundtable," ESPN's Shams Charania reported on NBA Countdown. "This was not his idea. This is something that was enforced by the owner, Patrick Dumont."
.css-1xiyrl{display:-webkit-box;display:-webkit-flex;display:-ms-flexbox;display:flex;-webkit-box-pack:center;-ms-flex-pack:center;-webkit-justify-content:center;justify-content:center;aspect-ratio:unset;}One of the interesting questions was whether Harrison regretted not opening up trade talks beyond just the Los Angeles Lakers in an effort to get the best possible return
we wanted a two-way player," he responded
where players really run the league and you guys have seen it with other teams
they dictate where they're going to go and where they're not going to go
Perhaps the Mavericks plan to add another star this offseason
who led the Mavs to the NBA Finals last year and is already a five-time first-team All-NBA selection
And they are almost never traded in their prime unless they ask out
but he's a 32-year-old with a brittle injury history of his own who didn't win much before being paired with LeBron James
Both AD and Kyrie Irving have always been best-cast as the No
And for all of Harrison's talk about defense winning championships
generally teams with a dynamic array of offensive stars win titles
Harrison doubling down on many of his old talking points fell flat
It's easy enough to see why he probably didn't want to hold the press conference in the first place
The Dallas Mavericks sent shockwaves around the NBA this season when they dealt 25-year-old superstar Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers
a move that is hard to imagine occurring in the Mark Cuban era
And Cuban made it clear in the aftermath of the trade that he believed it was a big mistake
But even though Cuban is still around the franchise
his influence has been greatly reduced since he sold his controlling interest in the team to the Adelson and Dumont families in December 2023
the trade was engineered by general manager Nico Harrison and approved by Patrick Dumont
The Athletic has reported extensively about Harrison since the trade, yielding some insight into the man who sent a transcendent star packing. And David Aldridge and Christian Clark have since shed light on how and why the trade came about.
Here’s what you should know about who is running the Mavericks
Dumont is the son-in-law of Miriam Adelson and her late husband
He began working for the Adelson-owned Las Vegas Sands Corp
— a casino and resort company — in 2009 after he married their daughter
he had been promoted to chief financial officer
Dumont was elevated to president and chief operating officer
When the Adelson-Dumont family bought a controlling interest in the Mavs in 2023
Dumont replaced Cuban as the team’s representative to the NBA’s Board of Governors
Before working for Las Vegas Sands Corp., Dumont was an investment banker with stints at Miller Buckfire and Bear Stearns. In 2015, he helped Sheldon Adelson buy the Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper for $140 million. Adelson credited Dumont with orchestrating the deal
Dumont laughed when Harrison first approached him about the deal
Dumont is known to be trusting of the people he has empowered
He wants to understand his employees’ thought processes before a big decision is made
but typically will trust them if he feels they have more expertise than he does
who believed he had amassed more than enough intelligence over the last couple of years to make his choice
“I don’t know how many teams saw the same thing that Nico saw,” one source familiar with all involved
but who was not involved in the trade discussions
I don’t know what you (Dumont) think of your general manager in your few month’s experience with him
But you probably think that he’s got a gift
In an article on mavs.com announcing the purchase of the team
Dumont said in a statement: “Our family loves basketball
and we plan to display our passion for the sport by owning and investing in a world-class basketball organization that wins games and proudly represents its community.”
Cuban praised the deal as an ideal partnership because
he came in unfamiliar with the workings of the NBA
In an interview at a luncheon last offseason
Dumont awkwardly referred to the finals as “the championship games.”
Cuban certainly figured he would have a say in personnel decisions
but Harrison cut him out of the discussions around Dončić
and he knows he doesn’t,” said one league source

Listen to this article00:001xA major power shift is coming for one of Texas’ boldest development bets
Patrick Dumont, governor of the Dallas Mavericks and a prominent figure in the team’s majority ownership group, has been named the next chairman and CEO of Las Vegas Sands, the Dallas Business Journal reported
following the retirement of CEO Robert Goldstein as Sands looks to develop a Mavericks-anchored resort project in Irving
Dumont’s elevation to CEO comes amid Sands’ pronounced real estate ambitions in Texas
which include political moves aimed at legalizing gambling in Texas
which is the center of Sands’ vision for a massive destination resort
SIGN UPIrving city leaders have been considering zoning changes to allow a 182-acre mixed-use development
including an arena with at least 15,000 seats and potentially a casino
In January 2024, Sands also acquired over a dozen acres from Cuban in Dallas’ Design District
including the Mavericks’ practice facility
This Texas legislative session marks the third straight year of Sands’ lobbying blitz to bring destination resorts with casino gambling to Texas cities
It has already invested millions into the campaign

Officials in a Bergen County municipality have approved an ordinance to fly only government-authorized flags outside Borough Hall
prompting public concern that the move — in particular
the removal of the Pride flag — will lead to LGBTQ+ discrimination
The all-Republican Dumont Borough Council voted 4-2 on a second reading of the ordinance at Tuesday's meeting
The measure states that the Borough Hall flagpoles "are not intended to serve as a forum for free expression by the public."
Council members who opposed the ordinance were Doreen Aponte
who responded "absolutely not" when asked for her vote
The yes votes were President Donald Morrell
along with council members Christopher Kourelakos
Flags allowed to be flown by the ordinance include the New Jersey state flag
the Bergen County flag and those from any of the six branches of the United States Armed Forces
Dumont can also fly flags honoring service members who are prisoners of war or missing in action
The council may display a flag "as a form of government expression" but will not use the poles "to sponsor the expression of a third party," the ordinance states
Before the public discussion and vote Tuesday night
Petry explained that flying an excessive number of flags on borough property "can sometimes create division rather than unity." The flags of the United States and New Jersey
are the truly representative symbols of all Dumont residents
Petry stressed that the ordinance is not targeting any particular group
but is about fairness for all groups and protecting Dumont from legal liability
She said she would happily support any LGBTQ+ causes and events organized in the borough
"My heart truly supports everything your community represents
but this ordinance is not just about the Pride flag," Petry said
"It’s about all flags and the broader legal [and] social implications that come with them."
2019: Dumont's LGBTQ Pride flag taken down twice but back up again
Kelly expressed his concern before the vote that the ordinance "restricts the public's expression." Specifically
he cited the measure's language allowing the mayor and council to make resolutions allowing other flags of their choosing to fly with approval
"I’m not comfortable with that terminology," Kelly said
"I think that the expression should come from people rather than the government."
who does not vote except to break a tie among the council
also stated his opposition to the ordinance ahead of the discussion and vote
we are here to serve all the people," he said
The council's vote followed more than 2½ hours of public comment from nearly 50 members of the public
who included many students and teachers at Dumont High School and members of the LGBTQ+ community
Two people spoke in favor of the flag ordinance
"I don’t think I’ve ever felt like this town was being less inclusive than it is today," said Denise Marinaro
"It seems to me this new ordinance regarding the flying of flags was created to manufacture a problem that didn’t previously exist."
Kelly said he received 147 messages against the ordinance since its first reading last month and just five in support
He also said he had never heard any complaints about the flying of the Pride flag before the measure's introduction
Many of the speakers said they saw the Pride flag's display at Borough Hall as a sign of openness and acceptance among Dumont officials and residents
they are unsure whether those feelings will continue
"Taking down the flag will create a divide
whether you think so or not," said Remy Diaz
"These opinions are very strong in our hearts
and you can tell already that there is a divide."
In 2019, a rainbow LGBTQ Pride flag was flown outside Dumont Borough Hall and was torn down twice

According to Dallas Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont, the Luka Dončić trade -- in which they sent the face of the franchise to the Los Angeles Lakers just ahead of his 26th birthday in exchange for a star who was about to turn 32
a third-year wing and just one first-round pick -- was about the future
Dumont used the word four separate times during a speaking engagement put on by a Dallas-area real estate organization:
There had been plenty of time to come up with an explanation that made more sense than this
Maybe Dumont was using the definition of "the future" that Harrison used at the post-trade press conference
The quote is already infamous: "The future to me is three
they'll probably bury me and [coach Jason Kidd] by then
and he pledged to try to earn their trust back
we know that this wasn't easy," Dumont said
but I hope over time we can regain that trust through hard work and that's our plan
And hopefully people will believe in the long run that what we did was the right decision
was delivered alongside a rationale for the trade that doesn't hold up to scrutiny
"Part of leadership is looking at risk and looking at all the factors of a decision and being willing to act at that time," Dumont said
"And look to the long term and not only think about the short term or how it may be received immediately
but to think about the long-term benefits and what it may allow you to achieve if given all the right considerations." Then he pointed to the 2024 trade deadline
at which point the Mavs "were not a playoff-bound team." Trading for Washington and Gafford changed that
as they went on a late-season tear and advanced to the NBA Finals
Before making the Dončić trade, Dumont said, "We looked at our trajectory during the season and realized that we did not get better, but the teams that we competed against, some of which we beat [last season], did get better." He said Dallas determined that the defending champion Boston Celtics had improved
Dončić was sidelined with a calf injury at the time
and the Mavs were reportedly frustrated with his approach to conditioning
they weren't pleased with the way things were going and thought the trade would put them on a better trajectory
But this is not what taking the long view looks like
with an all-time great still just approaching his prime on the roster
a slower-than-expected start in any one particular season does not warrant an extreme reaction
This is particularly true given that the team was mere months removed from a Finals appearance that served as proof of concept
The decision to trade Dončić was about the future in only one way: Dallas made a massive
long-term bet against him continuing on the course he's been charting since being named EuroLeague MVP at 19 years old
Despite making the All-NBA First Team every year since his second season and dominating several playoff series
Dončić was simply not the guy the Mavericks wanted to build around anymore
In light of Dumont's attempt to explain the trade
another from that Cuban interview stands out
"I think the biggest challenge that the Mavs have right now is there's nobody who's really outgoing to communicate," Cuban said
it's how you communicate why you do what you do."
By Brad TownsendSports enterprise reporter
Nonetheless, 13 months into his family’s majority ownership of the Mavericks and his tenure as team governor, Dumont stands behind the controversial and widely panned trade of superstar Luka Doncic
“It’s hard to make tough decisions,” Dumont said
“And it’s hard to make the right decisions when they’re tough
“But when you want to pursue excellence in an organization
you have to make the tough decisions and stand by them and keep going.”
Dumont’s comments to The Dallas Morning News are his first since the Mavericks eight days ago shocked the basketball world by sending Doncic, 25, to the Los Angeles Lakers as part of a blockbuster trade that brought 10-time All-Star forward Anthony Davis
Davis’ 26-point, 16-rebound Mavericks debut Saturday afternoon signaled a previously unfathomable era
against the surreal backdrop of a “Rally for Luka” fan throng massed outside American Airlines Center while
His tone and messaging to The News — and by extension fans — showed a dimension of his persona that had not publicly surfaced since his family’s purchase of the franchise’s majority interest on Dec
including when asked about an unsubstantiated and implausible narrative that has gained legs in the trade’s aftermath
“The Dallas Mavericks are not moving to Las Vegas,” Dumont said
The Dallas Mavericks are the Dallas Mavericks and they will be in Dallas.”
His general message is that trading Doncic
was a necessary step toward building a culture that wins NBA championships
Dumont reiterated his unwavering faith in general manager Nico Harrison and categorically denied that the megatrade was financially driven
coming just four months before Doncic was eligible to be offered a $345 million supermax contract extension
after acquiring three players and jettisoning four players before the trade deadline
are better than they were before the night of Feb
when Dallas and the Lakers consummated the Doncic trade
I have a really deep appreciation for what he brought to this team
“I want you to know I really sympathize with all of our fans who feel hurt
Luka is a Mav for life and I really wish him nothing but happiness and success in his career as he continues in LA.”
Many fans would say trading a player who has the third-highest scoring average (28.3 points) in NBA history and just seven months ago led your team to the NBA Finals against Boston is a peculiar way of expressing that he was valued
Doncic was a Maverick for six and a half seasons. Harrison and Jason Kidd are in their fourth seasons as general manager and coach — though Kidd’s association with the franchise stretches to when it drafted him No
and when he helped lead the Mavericks to their only NBA title in 2011
Given their comparably short Mavericks tenures
did Dumont and Harrison greatly underestimate the level of shock and vitriol the Doncic trade induced from Mavericks Fans For Life
some of whom have declared emotional divorce after following the franchise for much of its 45-year existence
“I think it shows you the passion that our fans have for our team
“You don’t know how I felt when we lost the Finals and I was standing there with confetti falling on my head in Boston
Dumont says that doesn’t mean he was ungrateful for the run
it was a magic carpet ride for Dumont; his wife
It was just one year ago this week when Patrick Dumont granted The News his first extended interview as team governor
The Mavericks were 27-23 and Harrison was in the process of acquiring forward P.J
deals that largely were criticized by national media
It also marked the third straight offseason that Harrison made major deals
following the 2022 jettisoning of Kristaps Porzingis that preceded a run to the Western Conference finals
Coming off of last season’s NBA Finals run
Harrison this offseason added four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson
Naji Marshall and Quentin Grimes and re-signed Spencer Dinwiddie
But the injury-ravaged Mavericks were 26-23 as of Feb
“We had a tremendous run to the Finals last year
but before that year’s trade deadline our trajectory was not a playoff-bound team,” Dumont said
“Those trade moves by Nico acquired the right teammates to allow us to achieve our potential and get to the NBA Finals
Dumont said Harrison and his player personnel staff measured the Mavericks’ roster and on-court results against not only Western Conference contenders
Boston and much-improved Cleveland and New York
“Not only do we have to fight a Western Conference
where a lot of teams got better through the trade deadline
‘Did we get better since The Finals last year?’ And we’d play this season to see where we were
If you look at our record up until the trade deadline
Dumont said he was much more involved in potential roster-improvement discussions with Harrison than a year ago
when he was just two months into his governor tenure
Harrison said he first met with Lakers counterpart Rob Pelinka about general trade parameters on Jan
7 and afterward regularly kept only Dumont updated
while Pelinka confided in Lakers governor Jeanie Buss
Dumont said he doesn’t recall specific timeframes of when Doncic trade discussions became serious
but his level of involvement appears to be affirmation of what Doncic’s agent
told The News: “It was done at the ownership level
Harrison told The News the trade was his doing and he alone in the coming years should be judged by its on-court results
Dumont said he cosigned on the trade and emphasized his faith in Harrison was well-earned
“I’ve said it all along: In Nico we trust,” Dumont said
You have to respect his relationships and his judgment and his point of view and the way he communicates
numerous stories have been written about the Mavericks’ rationale for letting a generational talent go
Much of the reported reasoning is unflattering to Doncic: Struggled to stay in peak condition
making him susceptible to soft-tissue injuries; didn’t consistently give full effort on defense
although he made strides the past two seasons
“Those are two distinct things,” Harrison said
and in specific traits the Mavericks want in players
and having the right dedication to work as hard as possible to create a championship-winning outcome,” Dumont said
the people you and I grew up with — [Michael] Jordan
you shouldn’t be part of the Dallas Mavericks
This is how I operate outside of basketball
This is the only way to be competitive and win
It was pointed out to Dumont that when people read those comments
the assumption will be he is inferring that Doncic did not fit those winning culture qualities
I think there’s a lot of things that come into play when you decide the roster of the team,” Dumont said
During a late-night phone interview in the trade’s fresh aftermath, Harrison told The News Dallas got ahead of what would have been a tumultuous summer
when Doncic would have been eligible for the supermax extension
Harrison said there was concern within the Mavericks that other teams were loading up to make a free agency run at Doncic in the summer of 2027
indicating the Mavericks believed there was a chance Doncic would not accept the supermax and enter the final year of his contract
Both Doncic and Duffy emphatically told The News no one from his inner circle so much as hinted he didn’t want to remain a Maverick
There has been published speculation that the Mavericks simply did not want to offer Doncic the supermax or pay the probable resulting luxury taxes
especially with the apparent concerns about his work ethic
Dumont flatly refuted any notion that this was a cost-saving decision
“The trades we made this past week were about improving our basketball team
“The resources are there to do what’s necessary to create a winning basketball organization for the long term and win championships
So this is just a risk-allocation decision
No problem signing someone to the supermax
other than within high-level Mavericks meetings
few in Dallas have heard this side of Dumont — the Brooklyn-raised NBA fan
Johns Hopkins and Columbia graduate who as Las Vegas Sands Corp.’s chief operating officer probably has been “unwavering” in more than a few board meetings
Which brings us back to the matter of the franchise’s long-term future in Dallas
When the Adelson and Dumont families purchased 67% of the Mavericks from Mark Cuban and several minority owners
the Adelson-Dumont Las Vegas roots were immediately noted
and some wondered whether the Dallas franchise could eventually move there
Aside from the absurdity of a franchise moving from the fourth-largest media market in the country to the 40th
there’s the reality that the NBA Board of Governors would never approve such a move
but none from a top-five media market that they weren’t sharing with another NBA team
when the NBA does grant a team for Las Vegas and perhaps Seattle
league owners will want the respective projected $6 billion expansion fees
The possibility of casino gambling being legalized in Texas is murky at best
says the Adelson-Dumont vision of Dallas with or without gaming is crystal clear
“We bought the Dallas Mavericks; we’re keeping them in Dallas,” Dumont said
“We’re committed to Dallas and we’re committed to our fans as the Dallas Mavericks
but we have investments all over the world
And the Dallas Mavericks is the team we bought
We had options to buy other teams in the past
but Dallas was the city that we wanted to be in
Dumont noted that the Adelson-Dumont families already have made considerable investment in the Dallas community and are just getting started
“We’re going to invest in the future; we’re going to invest in a new home for the Dallas Mavericks,” he said
like trading a piece of Dallas’ heart and an immeasurable part of its basketball soul and enjoyment
is adamant in his belief that continued investments and the right culture will reap championships
investing in physical assets around the team and creating a great fan experience,” he said
is about improving our team with a goal to win championships.”

Mavs Governor Patrick Dumont shared his thoughts on the Trade Deadline deals that transformed the Dallas Mavericks
Dallas Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont was recently featured in the Bank of Texas Speaker Series where the Luka Doncic trade was discussed heavily. In Part I of this feature
we took a deep dive into Dumont’s post-trade commentary in respect of what the organization was looking to build
we will analyze more of Dumont’s comments as they pertain to Luka Doncic as well as the potential for the team to relocate to Las Vegas
You can view the entirety of the Speaker Series discussion in the video below while we dissect some of the key quotes (with video timestamps in parenthesis) for your ease of navigation
He’s a generational talent and this was hard
I heard from the fans; I respect their voices
We ended Part I with a doozy and begin Part II in the same way
Many Mavericks fans are still raw with emotion nearly two months post-trade and this quote likely won’t help
it doesn’t jibe with the message being put forth up until this point
Doncic was traded and in an almost unprecedented way
was shamed out the door in the first few weeks following the trade
To go from blatant pot shots to acknowledging Doncic as a “phenomenal player” and “generational talent” simply doesn’t add up
Perhaps a simple PR spin once there was some time and distance from the trade
this about-face will surely come across as lip service to most observers
But I hope over time we can regain that trust through hard work and that’s our plan
And hopefully people will believe in the long run that what we did was the right decision.” (7:27)
this is the first time he spoke in no uncertain terms about the reputational damage the Doncic trade caused
He acknowledges the leadership unit likely lost the trust of the fanbase
commits to working hard to rectify the situation and offers a promising look to the future where he hopes to ultimately be proven correct
Here it seems he truly believed in the trade and stands by it
at least he shows conviction and recognition
This may be the best take in the entire group of quotes we’ll look at
This quote immediately follows the one above
time will in fact tell if the trade was a good one
Maybe Luka plays twenty-plus years while winning MVP awards and championships galore
Maybe the Mavs squeeze a mini-dynasty into the next few years
there is something still missing in this notion and it’s a sad realization
Even if the Mavs win one or more championships
some of the fanbase may never come to the same joy they did in 2011 because of how the trade was handled and the comments that were made in the immediate aftermath
all the time in the world won’t change the outcome for at least some cross-section of Mavs Nation
“The idea of moving to Vegas makes no sense to me
It’s actually completely the opposite of what we’re attempting to do… no
We bought the Dallas Mavericks; it’s going to stay the Dallas Mavericks” (9:34)
This is the most detailed rationale provided on this topic to date
rumors that the Mavs were on the move flew every which way
The Texas government did not approve the legalization of gambling in the state
therefore Dumont wanted to platoon the franchise
alienate the fans and have a clear path to Vegas
If even half of what Dumont says here is true – specifically the idea his family has almost fully divested of Vegas holdings – then it’s safe to assume the Mavericks are here to stay
we can’t overlook the fact that things change
Have you ever heard of a band that goes on a retirement tour only to hit the road again a year later
but this sounds like a thought-out business decision for the foreseeable future
It was not about the contract… If I could sign three max players I would do it.” (10:31)
this is terrific news for fans of the Mavericks
A wealthy owner willing to spend big bucks is a dream come true
Actions often speak louder than words though
why did Nico Harrison make specific reference to avoiding difficult contract talks with Doncic this summer
Perhaps Dumont is willing to pay for the right player as he sees it
but not articulating that here leaves one to wonder why two players up for new contracts this Offseason (Doncic and Quentin Grimes) are no longer on the team
“Dirk was very important to the community because of his character
because of his work ethic and because of his commitment to the city of Dallas …He’s an iconic person but he’s still here with us and he’s going to contribute to the Dallas Mavericks and he’s someone that sort of embodies the spirit of the team and it’s great to have him around and it’s someone that I look to for an example for what sort of the optimum outcome could be… He’s a champion.” (11:54)
This was a bit of a stream-of-consciousness from Dumont
but once digested it is apparent that he is speaking very highly of Dirk Nowitzki as not only a person
but as a symbol of what the Mavericks are and what they could be
this recognition runs in contrast with the actions that occurred
Doncic was the obvious heir apparent to Nowitzki
was involved in the community and left it all out on the court (see last year’s run to the Finals)
Trading away Nowitzki 2.0 while at the same time promoting the incalculable value of the original version is just puzzling
This was likely the most long-form commentary we’ve gotten from the source since the Doncic trade went down almost two months ago
It provides deep insight into what Dumont was thinking when he ok’d the trade and how he views the future
Whether Mavericks fans agree or understand is an entirely different question
While credit is due for coming out publicly to speak openly on the topic
there are two important considerations that should not be overlooked
how did the topic of the Luka Doncic trade take up nearly one-third of the entire discussion – being the opening topic no less – of a real estate conference
as Dumont jockeys for a new arena for the very team Doncic played for until recently
the fact the trade took up a meaningful portion of the discussion says a lot about just how attention-getting the transaction was and perhaps how much Dumont needed to demonstrate his position to his peers as a result
it is important to note what Hillwood CEO Todd Platt says beginning at the 6:04 mark of the video
Platt seemingly comes to the defense of Dumont
speaking about how difficult the trade decision surely was before segueing into “what this trade was not about” and passing the floor back to Dumont for the quote noted earlier in this article (the quote at the 7:08 mark)
It’s a struggle not to see this whole thing as a calculated effort to save face while fully in control of the narrative
Rather than discuss the trade in the confines of sports media or field questions (and retorts) at a press conference
Dumont instead used this venue to say his piece
we now have what will likely stand as Dumont’s definitive take on the matter
The Mavericks are currently in a state of utter disarray
so it will be some time before Dumont’s apparent vision will fully come to light
In regards to whether or not it ultimately proves to be a favorable decision for the franchise

the resort and casino development company founded by his late father-in-law
The board of directors intends for Dumont to take over as chairman and CEO in March 2026, when Robert Goldstein transitions to the role of senior advisor, the company announced Thursday
Dumont and his mother-in-law, Miriam Adelson, purchased a majority stake in the Mavericks from Mark Cuban in December 2023
Dumont represents the team on the NBA Board of Governors
Adelson is the largest shareholder of Sands
which operates casino resorts in Singapore and Macau
It reached an agreement to sell its Las Vegas properties
An entity connected to Sands owns most of a 182-acre tract of land in Irving that could be used for a new Mavericks arena
if the city approves an application to rezone the area
Since his first interview as team governor, Dumont has been clear about his vision for a new arena
though he has said the franchise will fulfill its American Airlines Center lease
The zoning changes don’t guarantee the arena would be built in Irving
but they would create a high-intensity mixed-use area that in part would be earmarked for “an arena with a minimum of 15,000 seats and/or an indoor theater with a minimum of 4,000 seats.”
The application also would clear the way for the construction of a destination resort with one or more luxury hotels, which “may include Casino Gaming if authorized by the Constitution and laws of the state of Texas.”

he laughed at me," Harrison said Sunday about bringing up the trade with Dumont
obviously he's the ultimate decision maker
But he entrusted in J-Kidd and I to lead this team
"You've got to get judged for the performance that you've done as a leader
Rather than offering Dončić a supermax extension and building the Mavericks around him
Harrison traded the 25-year-old star on Saturday night for a package including Anthony Davis and a 2029 first-round pick
Harrison went on to take responsibility for the trade by saying that head coach Jason Kidd had not learned about the deal until it had already been finalized
supported by new Mavericks majority owner Patrick Dumont
to pursue Davis and pretty much no one else."
As ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported
the relationship between the two dates back to "when Harrison was Kobe Bryant's marketing manager at Nike and Pelinka was Bryant's agent."
The Mavs offered Harrison a multiyear contract extension before Dončić and the Mavs played the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals last spring.
At the time, Dumont credited Harrison with having "propelled our team to two playoff appearances in three seasons and of course this year's NBA Finals."
That past success may have earned Harrison some decision-making leeway. His first major test will now be whether Dallas is able to find further playoff success without Dončić this spring.
A representative for the actor, who portrayed Jackie Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer
confirmed to TMZ last week that they identify as transmasculine and nonbinary
but the actor themself did not make a statement
Out published Dumont’s first public comments on the matter
it wasn't safe “to be myself at home.” Dumont was about 13 or 14 when they realized that they weren’t “like other girls,” that they themself “liked girls,” and that they “didn’t feel right” in their body
Dumont said that they “found a safe community” and figured out their identity
have a life I could have only dreamed of as a kid
and I still get to play women at work,” they said
LGBT Center and get medical care without fear,” they said
acknowledging that they “truly owe a great deal of gratitude to the courageous queer people who have come before me.”
the actor told Out that while they didn’t think they would be discussing their identity so publicly this soon
they “made a promise to myself that if someone asked
“Someone did ask and I shared… because I’m proud,” they said
most recently they shared a post that included a classic subtle transmasc “look at my jawline” thirst trap
as well as an image from But I’m a Cheerleader

all demonstrating Dumont’s longstanding love for machinery’s comic possibilities
when one character crashes his motorbike again and again in front of a cafe—a hilarious gag in an otherwise somber film
the director’s first foray into science-fiction is set in the Audresselles
the rural fishing region in northern France where Dumont hails from and where he sets nearly all of his work
Two opposing alien factions are named “zeroes” and “ones,” literalizing binaristic dynamics of good and evil common in sci-fi narratives
An escalation toward war is sparked by the arrival of a cute blonde baby named “Wain” who is prophesied to be the eventual supreme leader of the evil zeros
The ones are divided between those who wish to kill the boy now while they can
and others who find this tactic morally reprehensible; Dumont tells Filmmaker that the sci-fi genre is uniquely built to tackle philosophical questions in a simplistic
both the zeros and ones are surprised at having to grapple with strong sexual urges
and “zero” warrior Jony (Brandon Vlieghe) finds himself trapped in a love triangle between devotee Line (The French Dispatch’s Lyna Khoudri) and “one” princess Jane (Anamaria Vartolomei from Happening)
Sex and danger become linked as the act carries an added element of surrender for Jony and Jane whenever they meet for clandestine trysts
but a betrayal during copulation never arrives
and it is amusing to witness a lightsaber behead someone against the naturalistic setting of Northern France’s farm fields and beach dunes
spaceships are modeled after famous cathedrals
and a black hole sequence in the film’s climax reads as genuinely transcendent
recalling Hubble Space Telescope photographs or the work of Douglas Trumbull on The Tree of Life
taking responsibility for finding a performance
his philosophy on sound design and score and how the limitations of budget leads to greater creativity through choice
I wanted to go places I’d never been
Science fiction is a genre that interests me
because I find it both spectacular and simplistic
like a spaceship plunging into the night of time
It’s very evocative of philosophy and metaphysics in cinema
Cinema is a wonderful way of going deep into the secrets of our being
but the only place where that can really be seen is science fiction
As soon as I see a spaceship plunging into the night of the universe
I feel that we’re asking fundamental questions
Let’s see what’s happening in space
Filmmaker: Was the process of getting this movie funded different compared with your other smaller scaled films
Did you experience any difficulty with a higher budget
The screenplay was budgeted for about 14 million euros
The money that we find determines the ambition of the project
and that’s the way I’ve always worked
I adapt the screenplay based on the money that we’ve actually found
The initial screenplay had lots of intergalactic battles—those were impossible to do because we couldn’t find the money for them
Useless and superficial things go by the wayside
This frustration that I experience is good in making the right choices
If there are actors that we can’t afford
The film ultimately cost 7 or 8 million euros
and we had German and Italian co-producers
The castle is a castle in Italy—the film takes the form of its production
The Queen’s spaceship is a monument in Berlin
so the inside of Jony’s spaceship was going to be something from Portugal
I always make what I can and not what I want
Filmmaker: Can you talk about the visual approach
The sex scenes are wide shots using these faraway drone shots
Dumont: I used a lot of drones because this was a situation where space had to be present—there was a requirement to go up high
The drone is an easy and relatively affordable means to do that
and the drone gives me a way to split open the view of the landscape in an intense way
But in the scene where they’re making love
I’m nearly filming the landscape more than the fact that they’re making love
I like wide shots because nature says a lot about who we are as people
so we used the World War II bunkers that the Germans left behind in the region where we were filming
A major influence on the space genre is the epic
which is originally an ancient Greco-Roman narrative which came out of French and Italian cinema in the early 20th century
we went to the costumes that one sees in these sword and sandal epics
we took the idea of Roman horses and adapted that with local horses
Star Wars is basically this Roman genre adapted to outer space
and I adapted it within the north of France
Filmmaker: What is your philosophy about how the sound design and film score work with the image
When do you put them in juxtaposition with each other
Here you have a traditional score against a narrative that can be quite ridiculous at times
What were you attempting to accomplish by putting those together
but I quickly dissociate sounds from the image
I don’t need to hear what the images say
We have enough naturalism with the actors’ bodies and the locations to be able to dissociate sounds
much like music did in the films of the 1950s and 1960s
It’s that classic thing of music telling us what is happening
It’s providing a commentary on the narrative that is somewhat exaggerated
It’s doing something to make ordinary things take on a forced tone
The music tells us what characters are experiencing that can’t actually be seen
There’s a melodramatic side to it in that way
something that’s added on that I quite like
I like when things don’t quite correspond—I like to add colors
Doing that allows me to create an extraordinary object and all the sounds together make a symphony while the image is saying something else
the sound of the spaceship’s engine is music by Bach
but it’s so compressed that it’s basically just noise
But within that noise there are variations
there is a musical construction that is practically inaudible
but the emotional core with these characters and their journeys is always present
When you’re working with professional actors alongside nonprofessional actors
how do you keep the film from devolving into parody
The emotional core of what the characters are going through with each other is treated seriously
It takes different colors to make the actors go every which way
I’ll do a normal take with normal acting
In the edit I choose which twist or turn to use
where we’re searching and going every which way
try everywhere.” Actors like to play—it becomes a game
because then I’m able to take the film in all sorts of directions
it also can’t be too ridiculous—it is a very fragile thing
Filmmaker: What film did you figure out this method
I’m not some scientist or scholar—that’s of no interest to me
I learned to do this by spending time with actors
It’s up to me to find out when they’re good
are you thinking about audience expectation within a certain genre
like with science fiction for The Empire—how to play into those expectations versus when to subvert them
I don’t make films for an audience—that makes no sense at all
are often bad because they’re not sincere
“I’m writing for me,” and that’s the right way to think of it
The audience sees when you’re sincere
It’s like when you go to spend time with people
Do you think of the people that you’re going to see

has come out as transmasculine and nonbinary
the actor recently changed their pronouns and name on their Instagram bio
their name is now listed as Nick Dumont on their profile
and their pronouns are listed as “they/them.” Their bio includes a collection of heart emojis that appear to correspond to the lesbian and nonbinary flags
as well as the phrases “Carmy coded,” as in the main character from The Bear
and “McCutcheon apologist,” as in the polarizing anti-hero Shane from the original L Word
Now that’s a transmasculine nonbinary Instagram bio if ever we’ve seen one
Though Dumont has changed their pronouns and name on their Instagram profile
they have not yet directly posted about their coming out to social media
A representative for the actor told TMZ that they identify “as a transmasculine nonbinary person.” “Their work name is still going to be Emma Dumont
but they will go by Nick with friends and family,” the rep said

Nico Harrison continues to alienate the Dallas Mavericks fanbase with his behavior. It’s bad enough that he traded away Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers
But everything he has said or done since then has only further ticked off the fanbase. Harrison’s most recent tactic of a private press conference hasn’t gone down well in Dallas
During the meeting, Harrison shed almost no insight on the decision to trade Doncic
repeatedly claiming that defense wins championships
And after disrespecting both Dirk Nowitzki and Mark Cuban
Harrison has only continued to dig himself a deeper hole

Two people who weighed in on this matter were the hosts of ESPN’s Pardon The Interruption
Wilbon made the point that Nico Harrison has been the frontman for this decision
and the Mavericks ownership were responsible
Michael Wilbon: “What else is he supposed to say
‘I regret the deal,’ two months after making it
“Don’t tell me the new Dallas owner wasn’t front and center on this
I think Nico could just be absorbing a lot of slings and arrows for the owner.”
Tony Kornheiser: “I said the day it happened
and it would be quick – I think he will be fired.”

In the eyes of both the fans and upper management
it’s hard to see Nico Harrison’s job being safe
The ownership would not have expected the kind of pushback they have received from the Doncic trade
And in an effort to appease the fans upset about this trade
they might choose to get rid of Nico as a ceremonial gesture
But what if Harrison is able to earn their trust back? Kendrick Perkins believes that Harrison landing Kevin Durant would be enough to do so
However, for as great as Kevin Durant is
he would just be a band-aid covering up the flesh wound Harrison gave the Mavericks fanbase with the Doncic trade
