regarded as a four-star talent out of high school by both ESPN and Rivals but didn't see any game action during his true freshman season While adding Dunbar-Hawkins to the mix likely serves as a depth piece at this point that isn't to say that he can't develop into a capable rotation player (or even a starter) for the UNC football program Given he didn't play as a true freshman it's possible that he could still have four seasons of eligibility to work with as the Tar Heels can bring him in as a piece to develop knowing there's a high upside in potential that hasn't yet been tapped into one of the toughest positions to play in the sport of football Bringing in a guy like Dunbar-Hawkins would make a ton of sense considering the UNC football program is currently revamping its entire defensive unit After not earning any playing time at UCLA Dunbar-Hawkins will arrive in Chapel Hill with a chip on his shoulder If anyone can get the most out of a defensive player as they'll work to ensure that Dunbar-Hawkins is in a prime position to succeed during his time at North Carolina © 2025 Minute Media - All Rights Reserved The content on this site is for entertainment and educational purposes Dunbar City Council member Sierra Sovine has been speaking out about these issues She said she feels these repeated water problems are likely related to an underlying issue with the infrastructure "A lot of the residents of the apartment complexes are fed up and they're ready to move out of Dunbar," Sovine said "That becomes a major issue not only for the apartment complex but for the city as well West Virginia American Water told Eyewitness News that the water main which feeds into the city of Dunbar was damaged during road work and a broken valve was identified and replaced They are doing additional flushing in the area to address the concerns of water quality Sovine said she wants to see a long-term fix "It seems like almost every other street in Dunbar has been torn up with a water main break or water issues," she said "If you drive up and down the streets you will find issues everywhere." Councilmember Amy Fogg said she would like to see updates made to the system for the whole city "We are having water boil advisories and our water shut off and shut back on," Fogg said "When they're turning it back on they're not turning it back on at a low speed it's like full speed ahead and when us as residents turn our faucets on it's like a vacuum and then you know what happens with that She said she would like to see regulators added to the meters to reduce high water pressure making the lines safer to use in households and we want a permanent fix for our residents,” she said West The Wright Brothers were schoolmates and he enjoyed a friendship with civil rights leader Frederick Douglass during the late 1800s a professor of voice and vocal area coordinator at the University of Dayton will perform at a celebration of Dunbar's prose at 4 p.m The soprano is founder of the Dunbar Archive and will sing Dunbar's prose set to music composed by Samuel Colridge-Taylor an associate professor of vocal accompanying at Oberlin College said she has wanted to feature Ohio composers and artists since joining the staff in 2023 She and Daniel-Cox have been friends since they were graduate students at the University of Michigan "The church has had a concert series since 2021 and this the first year that I planned it," she said and I wanted her to come during Black History Month I assumed she would sing settings of Paul Dunbar's poetry because that's her work One of my goals for the series this year was to feature Ohio performers There is so much good music and so much good art happening in Ohio." said she became engrossed in Dunbar's life and work since joining the University of Dayton's faculty "I've become the Dunbar scholar," she said He's the first African-American poet to make his living by his pen and he is part of the first generation of free-born black folks who is this Dunbar guy?' And that started everything because he's from Dayton He's just kind of a big deal that you just don't ever really know about I made it my business to remind people of things that are part of Paul's lineage." Daniel-Cox describes the poet as "deliciously Black and deliciously American." "It was like meeting someone and you realize you've been hearing them your whole life," she said "There were these little snippets of his poems that I knew 'I know why the caged birds sings,' and we know it because of Maya (Angelou) and I realized that she recognized in him parts of American culture Some of our first examples of contemporary musical theater are because of him and his works He just did so many things that were impactful and influential in terms of giving African-Americans literary voice." Daniel-Cox said her favorite Dunbar work is "When Malindy Sings." Haake said her goal has been to showcase music not always heard "I've been really intentional about programming but artists whose performances will not be consistently of music from (one source)," she said "There are just worlds of music that a lot of us Daniel-Cox said she believes Dunbar is not better known because he isn't considered a "cool" poet like fellow Ohioan Langston Hughes She said it is obvious Hughes was influenced by Dunbar's work Dunbar's parents were former slaves from Kentucky He was the only Black student in his 1890 high school graduating class, and editor of the school's newspaper. His friends and schoolmates included Wilbur and Orrville Wright, the latter of whom printed "The Dayton Tattler," a short-lived newspaper Dunbar published for Dayton's Black community His big break came as an invitation to address the Western Association of Writers in 1892 in Dayton After a positive review of Dunbar's presentation was published throughout the Midwest it led to the publication of his first collection of poems He spoke at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exhibition in Chicago where he earned the friendship and praise of civil rights leader Douglass Following a positive review of his work in 1896 in Harper's Weekly he gained national acclaim and did speaking tours throughout the United States and United Kingdom Dunbar became a research assistant at the Library of Congress but it was a stormy and abusive relationship "There are 360-odd letters between Paul and Alice Ruth Moore," Daniel-Cox said "They are our first (literary) example of a romance between two free black folks They are essentially two young people falling in love Daniel-Cox said that like many gifted people "We are not going to be able to pay him tribute by lying about who he was as a whole complete human," she said This man was working as an elevator operator and was sickly his whole life He's enabled by some substance abuse and some systemic oppression and it's just all this kind of cluster of horrible things that he has to endure that he doesn't always conquer this is a person that gave voice to the Black experience in our literary world In 1899, Dunbar was diagnosed with tuberculosis and took to alcohol The house at 219 N. In August, Winters was moved up to the rank of corporal The move was met with public backlash because of Winters' involvement in multiple police brutality suits and two deaths the Civil Service Commission demoted him back to patrolman arguing that that way his case was handled violated due process and civil service rules the Civil Service Commission and Mayor Scott Elliot are trying to get Winters’ suit dismissed arguing that it is an effort to pause the investigation It also said that it would be difficult to justify even continued employment much less a promotion given the nature of the allegations against him A separate lawsuit was filed at the end of last week It was filed against three officers alleging a man who they suspected of drinking and driving was forcefully pulled from his car in July 2023 and was bitten repeatedly by a K-9 Dante' diTrapano and Jesse Forbes are co-counsel representing the plaintiff “He was trying to get his license and registration and stuff 'Would like you to get dog bit?' and a dog comes up with a K-9 handler and starts chewing the guy up and there are significant injuries.” This at a time when lawsuits have already cost the city and its insurance company millions settling the Scott case with other cases still pending Dunbar recently named John Garten as the new chief of the department He indicated at Monday night's meeting that the department is progressing “It’s a circus down there," diTrapano said "They’re going to promote somebody who clearly on video caused Michael Scott Jr and then now they've got a new chief down there I don’t know him but maybe things change with him.” The Civil Service Commission expects that the matter between them and Winters will be resolved in court in the coming weeks The 81st annual Dunbar Easter Parade brought out hundreds of community members Sunday with retired Fort Myers Councilman Johnny Streets leading the way as grand marshal The beloved Fort Myers tradition featured bands much to the delight of spectators who lined the route to catch a glimpse and nibble on sweet Easter treats CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Flooding this week washed through Dunbar Cave and possibly damaging 800-year-old Mississippian cave art.adButlerLazyLoad("914069051619340749",100,["433948","433948","433948"],"177031"); “Dunbar Cave recently experienced the highest level of flooding inside the cave ever recorded,” Park Ranger David Britton said on social media “This flood was several feet higher than what we recorded in 2010 Last week’s flood was the third such event in less than one year at Dunbar Climate change and development have very real implications to the natural world right under our feet.” In April 2021, a group of Girl Scouts helped create a 100-foot-long boardwalk to help preserve the nearby cave art Last week’s floodwater lifted that boardwalk and moved it about 20 feet down the room Another boardwalk in the front of the cave was picked up and pivoted about 8 feet Mud is now coating every surface of the cave The mud on walking surfaces varies from 2 to 5 inches deep and is extremely slick Britton 800-year-old Mississippian cave art was completely submerged This has never happened before,” Britton said and some of the images appear to have sustained damage from sediment rubbing across the surface Archaeologists will have to determine the extent of the damage will likely be delayed.adButlerLazyLoad("38701471397684062",100,["433948","433948","433948"],"177031"); “We’re shocked and sad,” Britton said “It’s an emotional scene inside the cave for our Rangers We are working with our partners to assess damages and plan a path forward for repair and conservation,” Britton said “We appreciate your patience as we navigate a very rough process over the coming months.” LATEST NEWS: Check out the most recent news articles UNMC leaders are creating a more vibrant academic health
