Trey Yesavage fairly often about pitching for East Carolina in the NCAA Regionals a mere 10 days after suffering a partially-collapsed lung “I've repeated that story probably 20 times since I've been here,” says the 21-year-old right-hander selected 20th overall last year the day after striking out seven over 5.2 innings against Rice One of the needles put into his scap muscle went too deep and hit the back of his lung as he struggled to breathe while trying to throw a bullpen he was back on the mound dominating against Wake Forest allowing one run over 7.1 innings while striking out six before East Carolina’s season came to an end MLB on SportsnetWatch the Toronto Blue Jays championship series and entire World Series on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+ from going into the conference tournament on a high and then not feeling well to going and pitching in a regional in front of a home crowd,” Yesavage recalled during an interview back in spring training when someone in the hospital told me I'm not going to pitch the rest of the season How the entire episode impacted his stock in the draft is uncertain – at the MLB Draft Combine last June “Is this a problem or not?” – but the Blue Jays were all too happy to take him at No the club’s amateur scouting director at the time said after making the pick that the partially-collapsed lung “didn't really factor into the decision-making at all” because Yesavage had “no issues coming back from that.” with a promotion to advanced-A Vancouver on the horizon, Yesavage is demonstrating why the Blue Jays thought so highly of him Through five outings at low-A Dunedin so far he’s struck out 36 batters over 23.1 innings he’s gotten whiffs on 70 of the 174 swings taken against him and it’s three different pitches generating all those misses – a four-seam fastball sitting about 94 m.p.h. a changeup and a cutter that have alternated serving as his primary weapon The whiff-rate on his changeup is a stupefying 61 per cent Yesavage was named the Florida State League Pitcher of the Week on Monday after striking out eight and allowing four hits over six shutout innings in his latest outing All of which is why GM Ross Atkins said Friday the Blue Jays “are confident that he is someone that could move quickly,” after explaining that a desire to get Yesavage consistent work and to avoid the rainouts and cold weather inherent to Aprils in Vancouver “was a factor” in initially assigning him to Dunedin a steady buildup of Yesavage’s workload will be among his developmental priorities for the Blue Jays as he logged 93.1 innings for the East Carolina Pirates last year and was shut down after a few side sessions once he signed is to get him through an entire professional season while acclimating him to the physical demands and higher level of competition he noticed a difference “in the structure of the bullpens building stamina in the arm along with like fine-tuning all my pitches,” while doing “conditioning every day which I never did in college” after an initial five weeks in the fall “I've just been taking it slow and being very methodical with everything I'm doing,” he added “just to make sure I am healthy come end of the season.” Here’s a look elsewhere around the Blue Jays' farm system: Infielders Leo Jimenez and Josh Kasevich are both ramping up their work at the Player Development Complex (PDC) in Dunedin although neither has a defined timeline for a return to action who appeared in 63 games with the Blue Jays last season but was slated to open at triple-A Buffalo had mono but recently started feeling better and resumed baseball activity Kasevich suffered a stress reaction in his back toward the end of camp and is now in a hitting progression 20 surgery to repair a meniscus tear in his left knee is throwing live batting practices at the PDC ahead of a looming rehab assignment … Three of the club’s top pitching prospects coming off reconstructive elbow surgeries – Ricky Tiedemann Brandon Barriera and Landen Maroudis – are each progressing in their rehabs are throwing multiple-inning bullpens in building up for “games within weeks,” said Atkins the club’s director of position player development spent the past week in Toronto with the big-league club as part of an effort to ensure a uniformity of messaging up and down the organization who spent the past two seasons as the organization’s field co-ordinator said the aim was "to see all the processes that are being put in place to make sure we're mirroring those processes as much as possible in (triple-A) Buffalo and (double-A) New Hampshire so that when players do come here they are used to as many things as possible and the learning curve isn't as drastic as we know it's going to be.” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said the idea began back in spring training during conversations with David Bell who joined the organization in November as a vice-president Duncan and Lehr sat in on meetings and watched how everything from bullpens to game-planning was run so they can “take whatever they can to the affiliates,” said Schneider Part of that is a focus on using the same language from New Hampshire on up these are the guys we want to see pinch-hit when they're not playing we want to see these guys bunt or see them at a certain position,” added Schneider very important not just from a tactical standpoint But keeping the message very consistent on how to win.” Blair & BarkerJeff Blair and Kevin Barker talk all things Blue Jays and MLB Sportsnet 360 and available on demand appearances he’s 14-for-48 with a homer and seven doubles reducing his strikeouts to 15 in 53 plate appearances but his defensive work remains a key part of the equation he’s played 18 games at second base and three at third base with Duncan noting that his defensive footwork and game preparation have been “getting better" with the help of infield coach Cesar Martin and Bisons manager Casey Candaele who is "a wizard at everything he does … Orelvis is attacking the ball really well right now His game-awareness – where are we at in the game where do I need to be and when do I need to be there – is really really improving.” … Outfielder Jonatan Clase who came up as the 27th man for the doubleheader at the Yankees two weekends ago and the versatile right-handed hitting Riley Tirotta In my entire career as a staff person and as a commissioner there will be no greater achievement in my opinion. I think right now we are doing what makes sense to do,” she said. City commissioners voted 4-1 April 15 to hire Wannemacher Jensen Architects Inc. of St. Petersburg at a cost of $416,377 to provide architectural and engineering design services for the second phase of improvements for the park. Jocelyn Broadhead, interim city parks and recreation director, said she used the term “development” loosely because city officials are not really developing the property. “Rather we are providing access to the eastern portion of the preserve and adding amenities that will support the passive recreational use for our community while simultaneously honoring Gladys Douglas’ vision by ensuring responsible use and protection of this treasured natural environment,” Broadhead said. The second phase will involve the installation of basic infrastructure and utilities, such as a parking lot, a driveway, water and sewer connections, electrical systems, fire protection supply lines and necessary stormwater improvements. This aerial drone view shows Gladys E. Douglas Preserve on Feb. 24, 2023, in Dunedin. The city acquired the land about four years ago. [ LUIS SANTANA | Times (2023) ]Broadhead said the Gladys Douglas Preserve is one of the greatest examples of a community’s collective voice, working in harmony with local government, that she has ever witnessed. “Through the collaborative efforts of private donors, the city and the county, an impressive $10 million was successfully raised to secure and protect one of the largest remaining green spaces in Pinellas County,” she said. Part of the funding included the city and county’s joint application and subsequent Florida Communities Trust grant in the amount of $2.4 million, she said. Phase one opened in February 2023, affecting the western portion of the preserve, and includes nature trails, signage and temporary parking and temporary restrooms. County officials will be responsible for converting a recreational building on the site into a nature museum, removing invasive plant species and implementing native plantings. “I’d be remiss if I didn’t do a big shoutout thank you to Pinellas County for their partnership with this, their work with the invasive species,” Commissioner Jeff Gow said. “The nature center will be a true asset to that park. That’s wonderful. The invasive species. That’s going to be a heavy lift.” Subscribe to our free Stephinitely newsletter You’re all signed up!Want more of our free, weekly newsletters in your inbox? Commissioner Robert Walker said the reason city officials embarked upon the Gladys Douglas Preserve project is to prevent further development of a pristine area that actually enhances the entire region south of Gerry Lake “I’m in favor of the preservation of this land That’s the issue at hand right now,” Walker said Commissioner Steven Sandbergen voted in opposition to moving forward with the design work “At this point of time I cannot see myself voting to strap this city with another $90,000 in engineering fees Because there are a lot of other things we need to do Nobody is going to take it away,” Sandbergen said “I want to see us tap the brakes and go slowly,” he said Commissioner Tom Dugard said city officials might find some ways to save money But he added that they are committed to the project The city paid $2 million of the $10 million of the purchase price of the property The city acquired the land about four years ago. “That was one on the greatest success stories of 2021,” Dugard said. The Falcons' defense held tough against an experienced Tarpon Springs crew narrowly edging out the Spongers in a 6-0 win for the Class 3A it was the first time they've won a district crown in girls flag football since 2007 we could probably play Tarpon Springs one hundred times and the score would be 6-0," Kifer said We played them up at their place and it was 7-0 Our defense was getting a little gassed in the first half I am just proud because last year we were 5-11 The kids have bought into what we've done this year Great crowd and the program has really turned it around." Dunedin (14-4) leaned heavily on its secondary comprising of Jaeylah Brown and Erionna Henry to keep the Tarpon Springs' offense at bay with each defender notching multiple picks on the evening No interception proved to be more important than the one by Myleigh Ogelsby in the first quarter as the senior defender intercepted a Elicia Issak pass and returning it 29 yards for a touchdown to give the Falcons a 6-0 lead that was the go-ahead score that Dunedin would defend for the rest of the game as both defenses would dig in and force several punts throughout the course of the evening The hole locations on greens Spence’s restoration plan for holes one to nine The key aspect of the project has been the restoration of green shapes and sizes has reopened its Donald Ross course following a restoration by golf architect Kris Spence and Stantec The course first opened in 1927 and was home to the PGA of America from 1945 to 1962 Renovation work began in March 2024 with the main aim of restoring the course to its original intent but with modifications to accommodate for advances in club and ball technology “I visited Dunedin in the spring of 2021,” wrote Spence “The course has been neutered by the removal of 75 original bunkers and a couple attempts to resurface the greens by adding rootzone meant the greens were about 50 to 60 per cent of their original size the original green surfaces and fill pads were intact buried under between 12 and 18 inches of added material Excessive tree planting had also choked down the width and created major issues with shade throughout getting about 60,000 rounds a year.” The upper layers were carefully removed from the greens in order to expose the original surfaces “We have used historic-like construction methods – such as mini excavators and skid loaders – to reconstruct the original green shapes and slopes to modern modified USGA green standards,” said Lorrie Viola and lost pin placements have been reclaimed which enhances the approach strategy and interest of the holes.” The recaptured lost hole locations were in the corners and along the sides of greens Spence and Stantec have also restored Ross features like swales Greens now feature TifEagle ultradwarf bermuda levelled and replanted with TifTuf bermuda which requires 35 per cent less water from the new irrigation system In order to restore the original Ross design any new bunkers that had been added throughout the years were removed “We renovated 57 greenside bunkers and 24 fairway bunkers as well as grading out 32 fairway bunker forms which are where Ross bunkers were in locations that are no longer strategic to play due to the increase in length of players’ shots,” said Viola “The restored bunkers now reflect those of the original Ross design directing the preferred line of play and defining the target area separating holes for protection and adding variety to the players strategy.” New back tees have been added to lengthen the course The renovation has also included the removal and relocation of many trees with the key drivers being to open up playing corridors and sightlines improve turf health and highlight specimen trees Work on the club’s practice facilities included rotating the practice fairway away from the eighteenth and extending onto land occupied by the unused par-three course “The restoration provides for a truly enjoyable round of historically designed golf in a public setting while allowing the maintenance team to spend their effort on traditional golf maintenance tasks rather than fighting with sand and weeds,” said Viola — The city of Dunedin is a well-known tourist destination that draws more than 1.8 million visitors and leaders are now considering a new parking garage that would provide more than 190 parking spaces The city chose a site at Scotland Street and Douglas Avenue — close to Main Street Some business owners like Soozy Naylor O’Donnell love the idea of more parking “I think it’s absolutely brilliant,” he said “We were down in Clearwater Beach for 28 years and they desperately needed parking and I think doing it now as the city is growing … is only going to help all of us small businesses.” City Commissioner Jeff Gow says he would like the city to look at alternative modes of transportation to help people get around “We have all of this car traffic because we do not offer any alternative,” Gow said The project is estimated to cost around $10 million While plans are still in the preliminary phase officials say construction could start in September — with an fresh line-up of flavours each day in the onsite lab all-natural ingredients and a generous non-dairy selection Take-home tubs and gelato cakes are also available The two new venues are the latest from Katrina Toovey, who also runs neighbouring Italian restaurant The Esplanade which is a favourite with both locals and visitors “In Italian cuisine there is a real emphasis on quality and tradition There is also a culture of meandering and strolling through a neighbourhood and really enjoying an environment These are all things that I know are important to our area “For some locals that might look like dropping into Piccolo for a glass before dinner at The Esplanade or maybe it’s getting a gelato with your kids on an afternoon stroll and getting yourself a nice bottle to take home afterwards We’re curating quality options to cater to everyone,” says Katrina The new wine bar and gelateria have been designed by Cheshire Architects who are also responsible for The Esplanade’s excellent interiors Piccolo is a refreshing break from pared-back hospitality fitouts with a fun use of colour and lots of art lining the walls “The idea was to have a 60s/70s European vibe,” says Katrina “the kind of bar you’d find in a neighbourhood in Rome that you just happen upon.” The countertop tables feature hand-painted tiles and each has a different colour or pattern Choose from a cosy leather banquet by the window or one of the funky mushroom-like leather stools The acoustic ceiling is another deft touch bright and open — we wanted to reflect that in what we’ve built here,” says Katrina “It’s about offering a few different ways to enjoy the area whether that’s a scoop of gelato after a walk or a glass of wine before dinner.” Find Sorella Gelato and Piccolo at 246 Forbury has completed a $6 million course restoration The course has been brought back to its Golden Age of Architecture roots through the guidance of Kris Spence The course was built in 1926 and opened for play on January 1 Ross referred to it as “his masterpiece” and attributed it to its ideal combination of rolling hills and other natural hazards that made it possible to achieve his idea of course perfection the city of Dunedin took ownership of the course the PGA of America moved its headquarters here from Chicago and renamed the course PGA National Golf Club – leasing it from the city but the site hosted 18 consecutive Senior PGA Championships – as well as the original PGA Merchandise Show in 1954 several renovations took the course further away from what Ross had created This included the green complexes shrinking 35-to-50 percent taking away from the strategy Ross intended it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places thanks to this latest and meticulous restoration of the green complexes every golfer can experience the course as Ross intended – right down to the actual greens Ross originally created the most pleasant surprise was that I could see the old green extending out beneath those renovations and was able to measure them and compare them to his original plans and notes and I quickly realized that the original greens had never been destroyed,” says Spence “They were just buried under this material It's fairly rare that they hadn't bulldozed them away There's no question that by the number of bunkers and the contouring we found in the greens Ross was clearly given a mandate or a directive to build a top shelf championship layout on that property.” Spence says the greens’ original contours and elevation changes are back for today’s golfers to experience firsthand “They're as good as any out there with great variety,” he says “There are some subtle greens on some of the longer holes and complexity to them on some of the shorter holes It's what we're used to seeing out of Ross when he was really on point it was a blessing that they just buried the greens It was sort of an archeological dig to go down and find the surface of the old greens and peel off the newer material like we're peeling the rind off an orange – to reveal that original green we could see the original greens that had been buried for 75 years.” “Players are going to experience the greens and bunkers how he envisioned it,” continued Spence “There's some difficulty and depth to it all That's the unique thing about Ross: He brought the style of golf to this country There are a lot of different shots golfers won’t experience on other courses The little bump and runs on the ground and the low approaches into the greens you experience in Scotland The response from golfers has been nothing short of spectacular the course’s General Manager of Golf Operations “If Ross crawled out of his grave today and saw how far the ball goes and how fast the greens are compared to his era I do not believe he would design the same course today that he designed in 1926,” says Kline “Now we have the course that we believe he would design The routing is still the same; some bunkers changed locations to account for driving distance Dunedin Golf Club is now widely considered one of Florida’s top municipal courses along with the Winter Park Golf Course in Orlando and The Park at West Palm Beach and there are discounted green fees for local residents “People are going out of their way to come here and play it it is helping to put Dunedin in front of some people who may not be aware of this community and how great it is Our rates are very competitive compared to many of the top courses and destination golf resorts in the region and some of them have already started sending us golfers.” For more information, visit https://dunedingolfclub.com About Dunedin Golf ClubDesigned by world-renowned golf course architect Donald Ross the city of mouthwatering dishes and nearly every town I went to was advertising a St Matthew or a St John Passion taking place in the week up to Easter It says something about how deeply engrained Bach’s Passion settings are in German culture that they can muster up so many performances while we in Scotland get only one for the whole country he shaped every phrase with depth and earnestness and sincerity moments that are key to the narrative but which don’t take up much musical space were lingered over or meditated on in a way that gave them an extra touch of significance such as the pregnant pause when Judas is exposed at the Last Supper or Peter’s weeping after his denial of Christ With the exception of some excellent ripieno sopranos provided by the RSNO Youth Chorus with only eight singers carrying the whole piece (as in the Dublin performance from the Irish Baroque Orchestra reviewed by David Nice yesterday) That still has the power to catch you up short in the opening chorus and you do lose some of the raw power when the crowd shout for the release of Barrabas it means you get first rate articulation in the chorales and the turba choruses of Part Two still had the power to sweep the listener away At the heart of the vocal performance was the fantastically commanding Christ of Ashley Riches (pictured right) but he deploys it with remarkable sensitivity to the meaning of the words and there was as much delicacy as richness to his performance with some disarming vulnerability in the Gethsemane scene Hugo Hymas’ Evangelist was fluid and focused as dramatically compelling in his Part One aria as in his narrative The pick of the rest was bass Frederick Long and injected strangely intense drama into the portrayal of the minor characters like Peter and Pilate Matthew McKinney’s tenor was more vigorous and heroic than Hymas’ making his “Geduld” aria stand out as unique agile voice that was a little too big for the small space of the Queen’s Hall so that her arias had a quality that was piercing as well as rich; second soprano Alys Mererid Roberts sang “Blute nur” with more statuesque focus James Hall’s alto voice was bewitching in tone “Erbarme dich” swinging in an unbalanced manner between dynamic extremes sang “Können Tränen” with heartfelt sweetness by comparison Butt built the whole thing upon the rock of the Dunedin Consort’s orchestra – or orchestras – and their playing was of typically virtuoso quality The pale edge of the vibratoless period strings added ab extra touch of sorrow to the betrayal scene and each of the obligati was expertly taken particularly Jonathan Manson’s viola da gamba Its sound in “Komm süsses Kreuz” came the closest thing all evening to upstaging Riches’ singing More information about text formats We urgently need
