We met Jeffrey Martz and his family in the fall of 2021
shortly after they relocated to Vail from Geneva
Although Jeffrey’s roots in Vail are relatively new — despite having spent the winter of 1987–88 working as a busboy at the Sunset Grill in the former Holiday Inn — he has embraced this community with genuine passion and uncommon dedication
Jeffrey brings a strong background in business management and financial analysis
With extensive experience as an executive in the energy trading sector
he offers a deep understanding of commodity pricing
His proven skills in strategic decision-making
and resource optimization will be valuable assets to the district and its taxpayers
Jeffrey’s international experience in Europe gives him a unique and thoughtful perspective on environmental responsibility — one that we believe aligns well with Eagle River Water & Sanitation District’s mission
We are confident that Jeffrey will be a committed and forward-thinking steward of our water resources
He is someone who respects our community’s history while actively investing in its future
We strongly encourage you to vote for Jeffrey Martz on Tuesday

2025Anchorage police conduct an investigation at the 16700 block of Mercy Drive in Eagle River on Wednesday
(Bill Roth / ADN) Anchorage police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday were conducting an investigation in an Eagle River neighborhood where a 40-year-old man was last seen in early March
as well as the department’s major crime scene van
were parked in the 16700 block of Mercy Drive
The address is near the Eleonora Street residence where Tony Mac Kronos was last seen on March 6, police said at the time
The residence that appeared to be the focus of Wednesday’s activity belongs to Christopher Sternhagen
Sternhagen is an officer with the Anchorage Police Department
Sternhagen graduated from the police academy and joined the department in 2018
according to an APD statement from the time
a detective could be seen walking into the Mercy Drive address
Other officers appeared to be collecting evidence
Police issued an alert Wednesday warning the public of a large presence of law enforcement in the area. The FBI is also involved in the investigation.
Asked if the activity had any connection to Kronos’ disappearance and whether Sternhagen was involved in any way, police spokesman Chris Barraza said only that the police and FBI were in Eagle River “as part of an ongoing investigation. At this time, we are unable to provide further details.”
A FBI spokeswoman said in a statement that the agency is “providing requested law enforcement assistance. It is standard practice for the FBI to assist our local law enforcement partners if we have a tool, tactic, or technique that could benefit their investigations.”
She referred any additional questions to the police department.
Neighbor Roger Gaston said he’d noticed police cars parked on the street for weeks — an unusual sight in a neighborhood he said was mostly retired people and families. Gaston lives on Iris Way between Mercy Drive and Eleonora Street.
At least once, the police were using dogs, he said.
They focused on Kronos’ house, a neat ranch-style home painted black with white trim.
“They seem to be keeping an eye on it,” Gaston said Wednesday from his front porch.
Gaston said he’d heard a man from the area had been missing, and had seen posters up around town featuring Kronos’ face, but didn’t recognize him.
The police department has provided no additional updates since Kronos went missing last month.
Friends and family have distributed missing posters and held rallies to spread awareness that Kronos remains missing and to generate any leads into his disappearance.
Kronos went by the name Joshua Kronbach until legally changing it in 2015. He was one of the first people Holly Gieryic met when she moved to Alaska in 2003.
“I have a hard time meeting people but Josh opened up to me and was always so nice,” Gieryic said this week, adding that Kronos has “a community full of people that are not going to stop looking for him and searching for answers.”
The police alert Wednesday encouraged members of the public to avoid the area of Mercy Drive and said the response could include drones.
Catlin Mobley, a friend of Kronos since he was 13, expressed his gratitude to police, the community and the media.
“I just want my friend to come home,” Mobley said Wednesday in a message. “I want justice for his family and to make sure that this never happens to anybody else in our little town again.”

Anchorage police searched an Eagle River home owned by one of their own officers this week
near the residence of a man missing for more than a month
Police have been looking for Tony Mac Kronos, 40. Police say Mac Kronos had last been seen March 6 at a home on Eleonora Street
Anchorage Police Department spokesman Christopher Barraza said the search extended from Tuesday through Thursday
Asked whether it was connected to Mac Kronos
he said in a written statement that it was “part of an ongoing investigation.” He said Sternhagen was still employed by the police department and declined to provide further details
FBI spokeswoman Chloe Martin confirmed that agents had joined the search to provide “requested law enforcement assistance,” but deferred further questions to police
“It is standard practice for the FBI to assist our local law enforcement partners if we have a tool
or technique that could benefit their investigations,” Martin said
Police are asking that anyone with information about Mac Kronos’ whereabouts call them at 311

Wisconsin is a great place to expand your company
We’re here to help Wisconsin businesses and communities find success
2025 – When it comes to creating a dynamic downtown
communities may want to seek out advice from Eagle River
The Vilas County community was named the 2024 Wisconsin Main Street of the Year at the 34th annual Wisconsin Main Street Awards Ceremony in Menomonie on Thursday
Eagle River awarded Main Street of the Year
The honor recognizes the city’s efforts to become a thriving
and community centered city where economic opportunity
and local creativity come together to build a brighter future
“The projects we’ve worked on — whether it’s revitalizing spaces
or preserving our history — feel like common-sense efforts to make Eagle River a better place for everyone,” said Karen Margelofsky
executive director of the Eagle River Revitalization Program
“We never set out to win awards; we simply focus on what’s best for our community.”
That means creating a downtown space where people go to gather
Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation Secretary Missy Hughes spent Friday afternoon in Eagle River and saw firsthand what the Northwoods city of 1,600 has done to create an award-winning downtown
“Eagle River has created a downtown that addresses today’s needs
“The result is a welcoming downtown where people want to spend time.”
Every thriving downtown needs a space where residents can gather
Community Square fosters those connections and creates a welcoming atmosphere to that people choose to stay and engage in
Eagle River has a rich architectural history in its downtown and holds a cultural and economic significance as a tourism destination
where people come to experience the Northwoods
Earning a listing on the National Historic Registry recognizes this and also ensures a commitment to preserving historic buildings and keeping that character intact
The city also recognizes that farmers’ markets aren’t just about purchasing items
The expansion allows the market to support local farmers
and educate individuals and families on the importance of healthy eating and sustainable agriculture
The inclusion of local artists celebrates creativity and craftsmanship
Eagle River also recognizes it’s critical to educate the next generation of entrepreneurs and business owners
young people receive guidance and support to develop ideas
and understand market needs all while being empowered to create businesses that fill a need or enhances the local economy
The city also knows art plays a powerful role in a community’s identity and is working to integrate public art into the streetscape
through the expansion of the Artscape banner program
“Each piece strengthens both downtown and the entire city
shaping Eagle River into a destination that inspires innovation
and leaves a lasting impact on everyone who experiences it,” Margelofsky said
Hughes spoke with Young Entrepreneur Market students
which WEDC supported with a Community Development Investment grant
She also learned about Andy’s Pontoon Saloon
which earned the Best New Business Award for the energy
The business has become a destination that mirrors the area’s lakeside culture
“Eagle River really represents many of the qualities that make Wisconsin unique – a strong community identity
and a continuous drive to make each day a little better,” Hughes said

As the warmer spring weather returns to the mountains of Eagle County
an extraordinary natural event is quietly unfolding beneath the surface of our rivers and streams
local waters wake as the rainbow trout embark on their annual spawning
clear waters of the American West Coast and introduced to Colorado around 1880
is one of Colorado’s most beloved fish species
this trout is not only a favorite among anglers but also plays an important part in the local ecosystem
typically occurring in late March through early May
marks a pivotal time for these fish as they seek out their spawning grounds to create the next generation
it’s time for the trout to return to their natal streams — the very streams where they were born — to spawn
the Eagle River and its many tributaries are among the primary locations for this natural event
As the snowpack begins to melt and water levels rise
conditions become ideal for the fish to travel upstream in search of shallow gravel beds where they can lay their eggs
The spawning process itself is a delicate dance
Once the female rainbow trout reaches the desired spawning grounds
she begins to clear a depression for a nest
called a “redd,” in the riverbed using her tail
the male trout moves in to fertilize the eggs with his milt
and the eggs are left to incubate in the gravel bed
protected from most predators and the high spring currents
The colder temperatures of early spring offer ideal conditions for the eggs to develop slowly
but rising water temperatures or fluctuating flows could threaten the delicate balance needed for successful spawning
the trout face threats from human activities
damming and water diversion can all disrupt the ecosystems in which these fish thrive
as they flush out the spaces between rocks (called “interstitial spaces”) where eggs are laid
Conservation efforts by local organizations
are crucial to maintaining the health of the rivers and streams in Eagle County
helping ensure that the trout can continue to spawn successfully year after year
whose crimson hues intensify as they fight to claim territory and attract mates
colorful fish swimming upstream against the current is a striking spectacle
The spawning season provides an opportunity for residents and visitors to reconnect with the natural beauty of Eagle County’s waterways
Whether by hiking along the riverbanks or simply sitting quietly by the water
the experience can be both humbling and awe-inspiring
it serves as a reminder of the fragility and resilience of nature
Many anglers in Eagle County take advantage of the spectacular fishing opportunities in the pre-runoff spring waters
it’s important to approach this time with respect for the fish and the environment
Many local fishing guides and experts emphasize the importance of using sustainable practices to preserve fish habitats and maintain healthy ecosystems
anglers are urged to use barbless hooks to minimize harm to the fish and avoid fishing in the shallower spawning grounds where the eggs are laid
You may hear the line “don’t tread on the redd” as they nimbly wade the streams
combined with ongoing conservation and stocking efforts
help ensure that the trout population remains strong and sustainable for future generations
The spawning season is a vivid reminder of the interconnectedness of nature and the role that our local community plays in protecting and preserving Eagle County’s thriving ecosystems for future generations
improved water quality and sustainable fishing practices
the rainbow trout population in Eagle County is robust
and the Eagle River remains one of the most sought-after fishing destinations in the state

EAGLE RIVER - Crews completed the first ice castle built in this Northwoods tourist town in three years on Jan
and it's generated buzz and crowds ever since
Eagle River's ice castle
was constructed by members of the Eagle River Fire Department
Firefighters posted live videos and photos of the multi-step construction process on Facebook
7 when firefighters began to score the ice on the city's Silver Lake and cut the blocks used to create the castle's towers and walls
Ice more than a foot thick is needed to create the castle's blocks
so early cold weather is a must in order for it to be built
The last time the weather cooperated and the castle was built was 2022
the executive director of the Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce
Firefighters have been building the glittering structure since the mid-1980s
other community members or groups built the castle
The firefighters are not required to do it
"I would say it's our duty to do it," he said
"It's our way of giving back to the community
And it's to sustain the community through the dark winter months."
The castle has drawn a lot of online attention
The firefighters this year posted daily construction updates on the department's Facebook page
Those posts have garnered a total of nearly 5 million views
Anderson said he and other firefighters go down to check on the castle every day
and they often ask visitors where they are from and if they are spending more time downtown
The ice castle draws crowds of people in real life to Eagle River
"There have been people there almost nonstop
except during late nights," he said on Tuesday
the castle and take pictures," Emerson said
Emerson said that it's impossible to quantify the economic impact the castle attraction has on the community
"We just know that we see an increase in visitors and business in our stores and restaurants when the ice castle is in place," she said
owner of the Edgewater Inn & Cottages in Eagle River
said several parties have booked stays there because of the ice castle this year
"It provides another niche to fill besides snowmobiling," he said
beautiful trails for snowshoeing and hiking."
the attraction of the ice castle is appreciated
"We had some people coming up just to get away from cities and destress."
the Eagle River ice castle stays in place until late February
Here are some fun numbers about the ice castle
700 hours — Firefighters and other community volunteers generally work a total of 700 hours to build the palace
37 firefighters — There are 37 members of the Eagle River Fire Department
including dozens who bring trucks to haul the ice blocks from the lake to the construction site
haul and place between 2,000 and 2,200 ice blocks
the number it usually takes to build the castle
10 by 20 inches — Each ice block is 10 inches wide by 20 inches long
A consistent size is crucial to a successful build
13 inches — The ice on Silver Lake needs to be 13 inches thick or more for the castle to be constructed
The blocks are shaved down to be a consistent 12 inches thick
about the same height as a three-story building
to add to the annual “King Winter” festival held in Eagle River
when builders first lit up the castle to give it a striking nighttime look

Mary of the Snows Anglican Church in Eagle River is getting a new rector that looks to have a positive impact on the community
Kevin Cable comes from Israel and is very excited about being involved in the Eagle River community as well as the church
Cable arrived in Eagle River about a month ago from Israel and it’s been a busy few weeks for the new priest
“I think the highlight so far was actually the first week and I was here and it snowed quite heavily and the church is called St Mary of the Snows,” Cable said
“I think we would of felt cheated if we arrived and there had been no snow.”
Cable grew up in the United Kingdom and knew he wanted to be a priest around the age of 20
But first he took a different kind of job to prepare him for being a priest
“I actually joined the police because I felt I did not have enough experience in life to be a priest," Cable said
"Your dealing with lots of people in different circumstances and situations and I felt I needed to get some more life experience."
After being a cop he went to Israel to start a small congregation near Tel Aviv
He was living in Israel during the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict

The Eagle River Coalition started life when the river was in trouble
Staffers from the local nonprofit spent some time Tuesday providing the Eagle County Board of Commissioners with an update about the group’s activities in 2024 and a look into this year
The river is no longer running orange, thanks to the continuing cleanup of the Eagle Mine near Gilman
But it still faces threats from the aridification of the West
habitat loss due to development and other issues
That keeps the coalition’s small staff busy
That work requires several partnerships and community participation
the coalition has launched a water quality report card on its website
and staffers and volunteers monitor water quality
The group also recently released a water plan for the Eagle River watershed
Community Engagement Manager Rose Sandell noted that the group’s quality report card will be updated this year
Sandell added that there weren’t any temperature alerts issued last year
which is good news for both fish and anglers
Commissioner Tom Boyd said he’s one of the 100 or so subscribers to the online resource
and Sandell said she hopes to put more regular temperature updates on the site
Watershed restoration manager Peder Franson said a new project this year will help improve the floodplain in spots on the lower Eagle
the coalition has been working to eliminate invasive species from the riverbanks
The coalition is also the lead sponsor of river and highway cleanups
Last year’s cleanups removed more than 22 tons of trash from the roadways and streambanks
People are already starting to email about getting involved in this year’s efforts
The group’s work also includes educational events including a community float to educate residents about water quality
Sandell noted that the float and other events fill up quickly
Melanie Smith, the coalition’s development director and manager of the Eagle River Fund
said that the fund allows the coalition and its partners to find projects that benefit both present and future projects
particularly to determine what river stretches are at risk
Coalition Executive Director Vicki Flynn thanked the commissioners for their continued support
“We really appreciate the partnership,” Commissioner Matt Scherr said
