UPDATE: The Amherst Police Department announced Leah Bellitto, who was reported missing on February 8, was found dead Tuesday morning
ORIGINAL: Amherst Police and volunteers are continuing their search for 29-year-old Leah Bellitto
who was last seen Saturday night in the Ransom Oaks neighborhood
Bellitto is described as approximately 135 pounds and 5'6" tall with brown eyes and brown hair
Police said she was last seen wearing a black long-sleeve shirt and black pajama pants with a blue flower-pattern backpack
volunteers with the WNY Missing & Unidentified Persons Network conducted searches throughout East Amherst
Sarah Hutchins organized groups to walk along the creek and pond off North French Road
She came across a possible clue: barefoot prints and handprints right near the creek
"This happened very close to home for us," she said
"Our neighborhood is right next to where she disappeared
We have friends in that neighborhood and it's not something that's very common around here."
The group got some help from Sheila Bugbee
She flew her drone up over the frozen pond
Amherst Police are asking anyone with information or Ring camera video to call them at (716) 689-1311
We want to hear what’s going on in your community
Share your voice and hear from your neighbors
(WKBW) — Amherst police announced that the body of Leah Bellitto
was found Tuesday morning in a creek off Dodge Road
Police said a citizen found her as volunteers and law enforcement were conducting a grid search around Got Creek and Ransom Creek
Dodge Road in East Amherst is closed with heavy police presence in the area. pic.twitter.com/HssBoE9x7W
They said the death is under investigation but at this point
watched as police wrapped up their search off Dodge Road
“It's been so cold and however it happened
maybe going for a walk and just getting disoriented and just been freezing out here and it's just incredibly sad.”
Dozens of volunteers organized by the WNY Missing & Unidentified Persons Network had been searching for Bellitto
police told them that the search was being suspended
Among those who showed up to volunteer was Alesha Conte
“Me and my husband and our kids…we live in Amherst and you know it hits you and it hits home when you when you see this happening in your community," Conte said
"And everybody needs help there can't be enough help...with something like this.”
“I just knew it was something that I had to do and so that's why I wanted to be a part of it," said Girzone
shared that on Sunday afternoon he found a small flower-print backpack on a trail deep inside his property
He thought nothing of it until a neighbor reached out to him during the Super Bowl and told him there was a missing woman
The description included that of a similar backpack
He called police and they came to investigate
bringing multiple squad cars and K-9 teams
He and his son have been searching around the creek since
He learned Tuesday morning about the sad discovery
“But they found her at the creek right up here on Dodge Road…Unfortunate for the family
Anyone with information in connection to the case is asked to contact police at (716) 689-1311
In August, the longstanding YOLO Restaurant & Lounge on Transit Road in East Amherst was relaunched by its owners as Duke’s Tavern
If you were a fan of YOLO — which opened back in 2011 — you should know that it still serves New American food and drinks
But the new bar and restaurant has a totally different look and vibe
It had a cosmopolitan feel that was an escape from its Transit Road surroundings
thanks to the removal of a dividing wall that separated the bar and dining areas
The airiness and natural light make Duke’s lean much closer to being a neighborhood joint than its predecessor
the menu has gotten a refresh. YOLO had more of a bistro influence
with dishes like mango tuna poke and lobster ravioli
The menu at Duke’s goes more in the direction of a gastropub
stuffed banana peppers ($14.75) and warm French onion dip ($13.74)
Handheld dishes include smash burgers ($16.75)
chopped brisket ($16.50) and New York chicken cutlet sandwiches ($17)
Main dishes include a bone-in pork chop ($33.75)
creamy corn pasta ($23) and a seafood boil ($34.50)
The bar at Duke’s has a lot more options and cocktails are a point of emphasis
Some of the highlighted drinks include espresso martinis
which can be smoke-infused at the bar under a glass dome
The new restaurant also has different discounts and features every night it’s open:
Thursdays — Old Fashioned ($8) and burger ($10)
Fridays — Ladies’ Night food and drink specials
but the changes have brought a major vibes shift
You’re now much more likely to see families now
but Duke’s is still a great spot for a night out
Hours at the time of publishing (subject to change): Tuesday to Friday 4 p.m
