It has been known as East Garden City in census records dating to the 1970s
with other references dating to World War II
Kathleen Rice (D-Garden City) took the name to Google Maps and the U.S
which in its 2020 census completed last year
removed East Garden City from official maps and merged it with Uniondale
“Uniondale boasts a diverse community with the largest commercial district in Nassau County,” Rice said in a statement last week
“Efforts to divide Uniondale must end and Nassau County should recognize the entirety of this vibrant community under its current borders as made official by the U.S

Jacobs said some developers have tried to relabel certain boundaries as Garden City or other more affluent communities to build high-end condos
They call it East Garden City to make it sound like a more attractive area to get people to move in the area,” Jacobs said
No other community in Nassau County has to fight for their identity.”

2022 at 11:15 am ETThe former two-story office building at 107 Charles Lindbergh Blvd
which the Internal Revenue Service vacated in 2012
was demolished to make room for a logistics center and warehouse for an unnamed tenant
(Joseph Kellard)(Google Maps)If constructed
the proposed distribution complex would neighbor logistics centers of the United Parcel Service and United States Postal Service
NY – Plans to build a distribution center at a historic site appear to be on hold as the developer may have changed the original proposal
Brookfield Properties in July 2021 paid $13.2 million for a 6.5-acre site and office building at 107 Charles Lindbergh Blvd., where the real estate firm was reportedly planning to build an e-commerce logistics complex for an unnamed tenant
The Town of Hempstead Industrial Development Agency granted Brookfield $33.8 million in economic incentives for the reconstruction project
and the Manhattan-based firm also received a town permit to demolish the two-story
which was reportedly to include a 100,000-square-foot warehouse and distribution center that would take up to 18 months to build
While the building has since been leveled and construction vehicles are parked at the site
there are no signs that the project has broken ground
Brookfield did not respond to requests for comment
Hempstead Town IDA Chief Executive Officer Fred Parola told Patch that Brookfield either wants to amend or change the original proposal
but right now it’s all in limbo,” Parola said
Parola noted that the IDA enacted a preliminary inducement in the case
and Brookfield must once again resolve all the agency’s preconditions
from applications to environmental and building code requirements
before seeking economic incentives for an amended or new plan
so that’s the reason why we have not entertained anything with them since they initially contacted us,” Parola said of Brookfield
The July sale involved Yehuda Goltche of Venture Capital Properties in Manhattan, who represented both Brookfield and the seller, Dr. Shahrokh Abiri, a radiologist and real estate investor located in Brooklyn. In 2017, Abiri paid $5 million for the building, which previously housed an Internal Revenue Service office before the agency moved to a facility in Bethpage in 2012
Goltche told Patch that at the time of the closing last summer
Brookfield did not have a tenant in mind for the proposed distribution center
Parola said that if Brookfield did originally have a tenant for the property
the firm didn’t disclose that information to the IDA
“But in an initial, preliminary situation, that’s not unusual,” he added. Part of historic Mitchel Field and neighboring Nassau Community College, the property has an underlying ground lease with Nassau County, according to Long Island Business News. The property is near Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum
the site of the county’s proposed 72-acre redevelopment project
apartments and a research and development center
the proposed distribution center would also neighbor logistics centers of the United Parcel Service and United States Postal Service

NY — Local viewers of the game show "Jeopardy!" probably perked up last week when they say a clue directly reference Long Island
And they were probably disappointed when none of the show's contestants was able to answer correctly
One Nassau County legislator has a theory as to why no one was able to answer the question: it was wrong
And it's part of an ongoing problem her community has been facing
2022 broadcast of "Jeopardy!" It was about Nassau County's Museum Row — the single street that houses the Cradle of Aviation
Nassau County Firefighter's Museum and more
The clue asked contestants to identify the well-known Garden City area
Uniondale is one of the most diverse communities on Long Island
it is 40 percent Latino and 35 percent Black
it contains the Nassau Coliseum and the adjoining Marriott Hotel
as well as the Roosevelt Field Mall — one of the largest shopping centers in the country
many of Uniondale's landmarks have been whitewashed
Their addresses have been changed to neighboring Garden City (which is 89 percent white)
which was dissolved and reincorporated into Uniondale in 2015
Opponents of East Garden City said it was a small area created to separate Uniondale from Garden City
wrote a letter to "Jeopardy!" executive producer Michael Davies
Uniondale community leaders have fought to ensure their hometown receives the full recognition that it deserves from government and media organizations," she wrote
"Guided by a shared desire 'to make Uniondale whole,' they and the hamlet’s elected officials engage in sustained advocacy to ensure regional attractions such as Museum Row are not erroneously attributed to neighboring communities."

The nation’s largest online used-car retailer
known for its multistory "car vending machines," has bought 1.9 acres of land in East Garden City for a planned Carvana Customer Center
Carvana paid $9.7 million for the North Avenue property
the Rockville Centre-based firm that represented the property seller in the deal
"Carvana pursued this flagship opportunity along the Meadowbrook Parkway because of high visibility
but also Old Country Road and the Roosevelt Field mall," Schuckman said in a statement Wednesday
did not respond to Newsday’s requests for comment
including on whether a vending machine is planned for the East Garden City site
the East Garden City property that Carvana bought is adjacent to a new retail development where a 57,000-square-foot "flagship" Whole Foods Market

the town of Hempstead approved Carvana’s site plan for the customer center it wants to build on the East Garden City property
acting Building Department Commissioner Frederick A
The customer center would be a 6,540-square-foot building with an attached auto storage tower
The property was sold to Carvana by Joup LLC
which is an affiliate of Midwood Investment & Development
the Manhattan-based real estate firm that redeveloped a former Pepsi bottling site for the new Whole Foods store in East Garden City last year
The company’s customers can choose to have their purchased cars delivered to their homes or they can pick up their vehicles at one of the company’s 30 car vending machines
"the customer simply drops their custom coin (which they receive upon arrival) into the car vending machine’s coin slot
which then illuminates the coin receptacle and activates the automated vehicle delivery system," according to the company’s website
Most of the cars Carvana sells are delivered to customers’ homes
a managing director in the Boston office of D.A
But the vending machines are a great marketing tool for the company
"They have more name recognition in the used-car online market than others

The 3-square-mile area that Nassau Coliseum
Roosevelt Field Mall and more call home was designated as separate from Uniondale years ago by the U.S
The move has increasingly infuriated Uniondale residents and community leaders are saying it’s time for a change
announced Tuesday that representatives from the Census bureau agreed to attend a May 29 meeting where Uniondale leaders will voice their concerns over the designation

Rice said the designation “undermines the identity of the larger Uniondale community” and “divides a community that should remain whole.”
“We know there’s no such thing as ‘East Garden City,’” Rice said
“I look forward to getting together with all stakeholders to make our case for why this designation must be changed.”
Uniondale community leaders are voicing their appreciation of the push
“It’s troubling to me that part of our community has been taken away from us
and I’m hopeful that through this meeting we can come to a resolution and keep Uniondale united,” said Uniondale Fire Commissioner Richard Harris in a statement
the superintendent of Uniondale School District
said he looks forward to the meeting and the possibility of getting the area re-designated
“The Uniondale School District relies on the entire tax base of Uniondale
and the possibility that part of that tax base will be taken away has worrisome implications,” he said in a statement
Town of Hempstead officials are echoing the concerns of the community and voted Tuesday to formally ask the Census Bureau to drop the designation
“You’re making it crystal clear you represent us
and not developers trying to steal the core tax base,” said Greg Maney

In the last month of Pensacola Mayor Grover Robinson's term, the City Council approved a lease with the developers of the East Garden District that effectively privatizes the only public parking lot on North Palafox Street
Earlier this month, Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said he paused the lease for 90 days amid the construction delay of the East Garden District hotel as the city looks to re-evaluate parking on North Palafox Street
The pause on the lease keeps the parking lot open to the public while developers determine the next steps for the property
"We've got to get our strategy correct on parking on North Palafox to begin with," Reeves said earlier this month
There's a reason communities don't put in two-hour parking anymore."
City backs East Garden District: East Garden District Jefferson Street improvements get City Council backing and $1.3 million
Original announcement: East Garden District project will bring hotel, rooftop bar, restaurants to downtown Pensacola
Reeves said as the city reevaluates its plans for parking on North Palafox
it asked the developers of the East Garden District to delay implementing a lease that would close the North Palafox Parking Lot at the corner of Gregory and Palafox streets for seven years
The 133-space parking lot has 45 spaces leased until 2040 by the U.S
government for federal courthouse workers for $16,200 a year
the Pensacola City Council approved leasing the remaining 88 parking lot spaces to Catalyst HRE
at the request of former Mayor Grover Robinson
which is $360 a space at the beginning of the lease through the construction of the planned 150-room Tapestry Collection hotel by Hilton at the corner of Jefferson and Chase streets
the cost rises to $52,800 a year or $600 a space; after the sixth year
the parking lot could generate $103,356 a year if the 88 spaces were filled each weekday all day
with $16,200 of that coming from the courthouse lease
When East Garden District was announced in East Garden District in 2019
developers said the district would include a "place making" hotel
restaurants and residential units in the block along Jefferson Street between Garden and Chase streets
with the city contributing $1.3 million for a redesign of Jefferson Street
Developers had planned that a parking deck would accompany the hotel
and developers turned to the city for parking
The lease runs for seven years with the idea that the parking lot would serve as parking for displaced workers at the other Catalyst properties in the district during construction and the first few years of hotel operation
developers had hoped construction would be underway by the time the lease was set to go into effect in May
New apartments planned: Downtown Pensacola may get new 6-story, 242-unit residential building on Garden Street
Tosh Belsinger with Catalyst HRE told the News Journal that their development team is navigating "headwinds" in the economy with rising interest rates and construction costs
"We're navigating those headwinds right now," Belsinger said
"We can't (commit to) give a start date on the (hotel) project yet
just because we're navigating some things that weren't around six months ago."
Belsinger said they remain committed to bringing a "placemaking" hotel to the East Garden District
"There isn't a market sector in real estate development that isn't seeing this right now," Belsinger said
and we're going to continue to work through the project
Belsinger said the group will have a better idea of when the hotel will start construction by August
when the lease for the parking lot is now set to go into effect
Other projects in the East Garden District are still planned including including a planned 242-unit apartment development being built by STOA Group
which has approval from the city to begin needed demolition work
Belsinger said they are looking at potentially leasing the ground floor space at 2 N
which the News Journal previously leased before it moved out last year to its current office at 341 N
The space could become a Cajun restaurant and a lifestyle retail store
In the current parking lot space on North Jefferson Street next to the newly opened Papa's Pizza downtown location
the developers are working through the design of a new building that will host a ramen noodle restaurant
also in the current parking lot on the west side of North Jefferson Street
four-unit residential building they hope to build
Reeves said despite the 90-day delay in implementing the lease
the agreement does not extend the length of the lease
so the seven-year clock on the parking lot has begun
"The end date of the agreement is still the end date of the agreement," Reeves said

Nassau County police said they are searching for Sang Ho Kim
seen in an undated photo and identified as a former employee of Savenergy Inc
The Nassau Police BSO unit conducts a search near Roosevelt Field where a suspect involved in a shooting in Garden City was last seen
A vendor turned gunman fatally shot one man and critically wounded another at an East Garden City company Wednesday
terrorizing a busy shopping and business district as police hunted into the night for the killer
then killed an employee and shot the company owner over a soured business relationship
The gunman drove off in what may be a white Honda Pilot
officers scoured the area for him for hours
the intensive search paralyzing one of the busiest shopping and business areas of Nassau County for more than three hours as nearby schools and stores were locked down
Some officers ordered shoppers at the nearby Roosevelt Field mall to go back inside and told arriving shoppers to stay in their vehicles
Others searched door to door in the business district
Officers also canvassed parking lots and checked shrubbery searching for the suspect
Access was virtually frozen for hours to nearby streets and schools in Garden City and East Williston
and on the Nassau Community College campus as the manhunt expanded with an air search and officers from Garden City
"People were running around; it was pretty chaotic," said Jennifer Haber
who heard gunfire as she walked from the mall to her room at a nearby hotel
Friends and a law enforcement source identified the victim who survived as John Choi
Choi was in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow Wednesday night
hospital spokeswoman Shelley Lotenberg said
Kim apparently had a dispute with "the deceased and the owner [over]
a bad business deal," Nassau Chief of Department Steven Skrynecki said at a news conference
including the type of handgun and the number of shots fired
Authorities Wednesday sought the public's help in tracking down Kim by releasing a photo and details of the vehicle being sought
Kim had been wearing a red shirt and a brown or gray suit jacket
Police do not consider him a threat to the public and believe he has left the immediate area
But Skrynecki called him "a very dangerous individual."
Kim left a message on his sister's voice mail
a Syosset resident who asked not to be publicly named
"My brother left message on suicide: 'I love you so much
I love my family,' " the sister said
very nice man" who had a business disagreement with Choi
The two were to meet Tuesday to discuss the problem
Police have been examining security footage from the area to piece together any trace of Kim
The shooting took place in a single-story commercial building at the end of South Street
within walking distance of Roosevelt Field mall and yards away from the Meadowbrook State Parkway
who serves as the firm's chief executive and president
The business was honored by the Long Island Power Authority last year with a Rising Star certificate in the commercial lighting efficiency program
Choi helped create the Korean American Public Affairs Committee in Oyster Bay
a nonprofit formed in 2006 to help Korean-American professionals and businesses
said committee president David Chulwoo Lee
who learned Choi had been wounded when Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano called him
"He's very actively involved," said Lee
who describes Choi as a "good Christian who has a passion for supporting the community."
"He does so much for the community," he said
No one answered the door at Choi's home
a white and beige two-floor house on a quiet
"Our prayers are with the victims," said Mangano
a representative of Hicksville-based Metro Area Sales
which planned to represent Savenergy to sell its lighting products
Grant said he was on his way to a 12:30 p.m
meeting with Choi when he heard what happened on the radio
We had this meeting planned for three weeks
I'm glad the meeting wasn't at 10 o'clock because we would have been in the building."CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story mischaracterized the shooting suspect's relationship with Savenergy
