HIGHLAND PARK – Markos Hantsoulis isn’t quite a drop-back passer
but more like an east-to-west-to-east type of quarterback
eluding tacklers and often creating enough time to find the open receiver
That kind of sums up the Highland Park football program
Things haven’t always gone smoothly but the Owls just keep going and showing up
Highland Park topped Brearley 31-6 in a Big Central Freedom Gold game before an enthusiastic home crowd to improve to 3-0
“The team spirit is just so up and we’re all together like family,” Hantsoulis said
Hantsoulis threw three touchdown passes to his cousin Kosta of 26
The 6-foot-4 Markos finished 11-for-14 with 233 passing yards and Kosta had five catches for 144 yards
Kosta's brother Stamatis also caught a pass
"We grew up playing football all the time," Markos said
Ziggy Holland added a 3-yard scoring run and rushed for 86 yards on 13 carries
That included a 45-yard scamper that set up a touchdown
in which offensive lineman Brian Mahoney had a key block
Jaylin Adams had three catches for 72 yards
The Owls led 21-6 at halftime in the methodical win
Highland Park has now won four-straight since snapping a 51-game losing streak in last year’s season finale
Markos Hantsoulis’ interception led to Highland Park’s final score – a Kosta Hantsoulis’ 20-yard field goal with 3:27 left
(He had another pick in the second quarter that was called back.) Kosta Hantsoulis added four extra points in the win
Brearley’s Mathew Resende reeled off an 86-yard scoring run
His 2-point conversion run was stopped as the Owls had a 7-6 lead with 3:11 left in the first quarter
“In years past our kids would put their heads down,” Owls coach Shawn Harrison said
There was a sense of focus and coming back and we put another seven on the board.”
The Owls' defense shined with middle linebacker Michael Oliver-Kohler leading the way
Harrison said that the team played together with unity and fed off the energy in the crowd
“We haven’t been 2-0 in a long time,” Harrison said
“I think since 2008 and you come home to a great fan base and the buzz is around

East Brunswick Magnet extended its lead further with a four-run outburst in the second inning before tacking on two more runs in the fourth
Tommy O’Neill recorded the only extra-base hit of the day
smacking a double as part of a 2-for-4 day that also saw O’Neill steal a base and come around to score twice
Four East Brunswick Magnet pitchers combined to strike out 17 Highland Park batters while walking five
Joshua Carreras struck out four in 1 1/3 innings
Jack Clements struck out four in 2 1/3 innings
Nomar Carreras recorded five strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings and Charlie Misura notched four strike outs in 1 2/3 innings for East Brunswick Magnet (9-0)
Connor Roth-Zappo drew a walk and stole two bases in a 1-for-2 performance at the plate
Owen Roth-Zappo nearly matched Connor’s stat line
stealing three bases and coming around to score for Highland Park (2-5)

An east Highland Park home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright — one of three conceived by the architect in the community — has sold for $687,500
While the new owners will have the right to demolish it in October 2016
listing agent Julie Deutsch told Elite Street that while she represented only the seller and not the buyers
(the new buyers) are keeping it (and not tearing it down)
The previous owner had tried to sell it for more than four years, The Chicago Tribune reports
the Highland Park Historic Preservation Commission granted the owners conditional permission to demolish the structure originally constructed in 1906
The low price suggests the house is selling primarily for its land value
home is on a .66-acre lot just a block from Lake Michigan
“It first was listed in May 2011 for $1.399 million and underwent a dozen price reductions
including its most recent price cut to $749,000 in September,” The Tribune reported
“The house went under contract in October.”
Many of the famous architect’s homes have received historic preservation status
The National Park Service added the house to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982

looks around the courtroom after hearing before Judge Victoria Rossetti in May 2024
The trial of the Highland Park parade shooting suspect is set to kick off Monday with jury selection at a courthouse in north suburban Chicago
might be the public’s first look at the mountain of evidence prosecutors say they have against Robert Crimo III
The Lake County state’s attorney’s office, led by Eric Rinehart, alleges Crimo killed seven people and wounded 48 on July 4
while shooting from a rooftop overlooking Highland Park’s annual parade
Police arrested him hours after the massacre while he was driving his family’s car in the north suburbs
Rinehart’s office disclosed last month that much of the trial may focus on the testimony of the dozens of living victims
The majority of those victims plan to testify about their experiences of the attack
But in a case with such an unpredictable defendant
no one knows for sure what to expect — including whether Crimo may testify
The defendant has acted erratically as the case has trudged along for two years in court before Lake County Judge Victoria Rossetti
Prosecutors have said the defendant confessed in a police interview the evening after the attack. But Crimo later claimed in a video call leaked from jail that the attack was staged by FBI agents
Then early in 2024, Crimo said he was prepared to change his plea to guilty. But in a dramatic courtroom scene
Crimo said he would not change his plea after all — angering survivors who said it was Crimo’s way of hurting them all over again
Rinehart says prosecutors are prepared to lay out evidence they’ve collected to pin Crimo as the shooter who climbed to a rooftop and fired more than 80 rounds from an assault rifle
Prosecutors have said they have thousands of pages of evidence in the case
That includes a 7 1/2-hour video of Crimo’s police interrogation in which prosecutors say Crimo admits to the attack
Prosecutors plan to identify Crimo as the shooter through video surveillance allegedly showing him going to and from the rooftop
A former school resource officer who interacted with Crimo will identify him in the videos
including one dropped near the scene of the shooting
have not indicated how they will defend the 24-year-old at trial
The lawyers have not proclaimed Crimo innocent in any court hearing
Highland Park residents gather in Port Clinton Square on July 11
2022 for a 2-minute moment of silence for the victims of the shooting the week before
But the lawyers did try to prohibit hours of Crimo’s interrogation video from the trial, arguing late last year that police improperly kept Crimo from accessing a family attorney. Rossetti ruled against the request.
The judge has also warned Crimo several times that the trial would proceed with or without him after he skipped a court hearing last year
a Democrat who won his first reelection bid last year
has appeared at many of Crimo’s pretrial hearings — and spoken at many of them — but has not said if he will prosecute part of the case
Much of the work so far have been handled by two of Rinehart’s assistant state’s attorneys
Prosecutors were prepared to lay out much of the same evidence for another trial in late 2023
His father was set to go to trial on charges that he recklessly signed his son’s firearm permit application when he was too young. But on the day the trial was set to begin, the father accepted a deal with prosecutors. Crimo Jr. pleaded guilty and served two months in jail
Crimo Jr.'s lawyer said the father was foregoing a trial to spare the Highland Park community from reliving the trauma of the shooting
He also said he was doing it to keep evidence from being publicized ahead of his son’s trial
Holding a trial “would mean that the potential key evidence would be disclosed to the public
jeopardizing his son’s fair right to a trial,” attorney George Gomez told reporters then

Rossetti during case management and ruling on motions Wednesday at the Lake County Courthouse in Waukegan
A Lake County judge on Wednesday ruled that prosecutors can present any part of the entire seven-hour-plus police interrogation video of the Highland Park parade massacre suspect at his trial scheduled for February
reading her ruling at the Lake County Courthouse
rejected a motion to prohibit the majority of the interview of suspect Robert E
is accused of killing seven people with an assault rifle from a rooftop overlooking the north suburb’s July 4 parade in 2022
The suspect’s attorneys argued that police had violated his constitutional rights by failing to tell Crimo that an attorney who showed up at the police station
had specifically been hired by his family for him
only told Crimo that there was an attorney in the lobby
The judge ultimately agreed with prosecutors that police had told Crimo enough information for his rights not to be violated during the interrogation at the Highland Park police station the evening after the shooting
The judge pointed to numerous times a Highland Park police detective read Crimo his Miranda rights. At one point in the interview Crimo said, “I like heard it a million times,” according to video played at his previous court hearing
The judge said the interview appeared to be “conversational and non-threatening” with a “relaxed atmosphere,” with police offering Crimo multiple bathroom breaks and food
“The defendant clearly understood his rights,” Rossetti said in the 40-minute hearing
“The court finds the state has met its burden.”
The judge also ruled in favor of prosecutors on a second
less-contentious motion to allow identification testimony at trial of a former school resource officer who had interacted with Crimo at Edgewood Middle School and Highland Park High School
has identified Crimo as the suspect appearing in video and still photos from the area of the shooting
Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said he agreed with the judge’s ruling but declined to comment further

The attorneys told the judge they had prepared questions for jurors for the trial

Prosecutors are set to deliver opening statements in the Highland Park Fourth of July parade mass shooting trial Monday as they lay out the case that Robert Crimo III committed one of the worst mass shootings in Illinois history
The Lake County state’s attorney’s office has said it collected thousands of pages of documents and photos — and a recorded confession — tying Crimo to the attack on July 4, 2022. Prosecutors say Crimo climbed to the roof of Ross Cosmetics and fired on the parade that day in the north suburb

Most surviving victims plan to testify at the trial that Lake County Judge Victoria Rossetti said could last three to five weeks
Many of the dozens of people questioned to be jurors said they could not commit that amount of time — or fairly consider whether Crimo was guilty
Two of the six women and six men impaneled for the jury said they initially thought Crimo was guilty based on news accounts of his arrest

Crimo, 21, who’s charged with killing seven people and wounding dozens of others in a mass shooting at the suburb’s Fourth of July parade, dropped out of Highland Park High School before his junior year
he vanished from the lives of the kids he’d passed in the hallways of the 2,000-student school

Highland Park police officers were called to the family’s home after a call that he’d “attempted to commit suicide with a machete.” The incident was “handled last week by mental health professionals,” according to a police report that also said
“Bobby is known to use marijuana” and “has a history of attempts.”

Authorities say he also bought four other weapons: a Remington 700 bolt-action rifle
The M&P15 — the initials stand for military and police
according to the manufacturer — was fired more than 80 times at parade-goers as floats and bands passed through the streets of downtown Highland Park on Monday
Though Crimo’s father provided the parental signature his son needed to buy the military-style rifle, he was quoted in an interview with the New York Post as saying he bears “zero” responsibility for the Highland Park Fourth of July shootings
which prosecutors have said his son has confessed to
The story also quotes the father as saying he spoke with his son on July 3 about a mass shooting that day in Denmark in which a 22-year-old man has been charged with shooting and killing three people at that country’s largest shopping mall
that guy is an idiot.’ That’s what he said!” the newspaper quoted Crimo’s father recalling his son saying of the Denmark shooter
It also reported the father said his son told him that “people like that” commit mass shootings “to amp up the people that want to ban all guns.”

They are shared by millions of people,” says Laura Wilson

appeared in court Wednesday in Waukegan for a case management conference
IL — The trial of the man accused of the murder of seven people and the wounding of dozens of others at the Highland Park Independence Day parade is scheduled to begin Feb
appeared in court for a case management conference Wednesday in Waukegan
where he remains detained at the Lake County Jail as he awaits trial on 117 felony counts in connection with the July 4
After dismissing his court-appointed attorneys in December
Crimo briefly represented himself and demanded a speedy trial
which was placed on the calendar for next week
But Crimo reversed course last month and again requested help from a team of public defenders
who sough to push the trial back to a date in February 2025 that they and prosecutors had already mutually agreed to
Crimo, who appeared this week for the first time with closely cropped hair, is no longer in administrative segregation inside the jail
according to a sheriff's office spokesperson
Assistant State's Attorney Ben Dillon again asked the judge to schedule the trial before the end of October
"We did anticipate we would have been ready for next week
and we would be ready earlier than February of 2025," Dillon said
But Dillon also said he informed Crimo's lead attorney that they are still missing some photos and "foundational materials" from the Highland Park Police Department
which would need to be turned over to the defense
The prosecutor said he had recently provided public defenders additional discovery
including X-rays from the coroner's office and an FBI report
Assistant Public Defender Anton Trizna said he believes a trial date of early next year is realistic and noted that prosecutors previously did not seem to have "an issue with it."
Lake County Circuit Judge Victoria Rossetti decided to stick with the trial schedule that the assistant public defenders and state's attorneys worked out last year
Crimo for a short period of time asked to represent himself," Rosetti said
"I don't think that that should change the trial date."
Crimo faces 21 counts of first-degree murder
three for each of the seven slain paradegoers — Katie Goldstein
Rinehart issued a statement reiterating his office's readiness for Crimo's trial
"Our team of prosecutors and victim specialist have been meeting with and talking with the victims since this horrible crime
"The most important thing is that we secure certain justice as best as we can for the victims
Crimo is due back in court for a status hearing April 24
Federal inspect two houses in Highland Park that’s associated with the suspect in a mass shooting where 6 people were killed and at least 2 dozen where injured at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park
The 21-year-old suspect in the Highland Park Fourth of July parade mass shooting is believed to have been turned away from a synagogue in the North Shore community in April
according to the head of a Jewish security organization
A man who looks like Robert E. Crimo III entered the Chabad synagogue during Passover
chief executive officer of Secure Community Network
Masters said Crimo wasn’t on his organization’s radar until Monday
identifying him as the suspect in the massacre that killed seven people and left dozens wounded
released a photo of Crimo showing the tattoos he has on his face and neck
Masters said his organization spoke to people in the Jewish community who confirmed the rabbi had recognized Crimo “as the same individual who visited the synagogue in April.”
“There was a conversation with the individual
Rabbi Yosef Schanowitz released a statement Tuesday saying an individual he believes was Crimo was wearing a yarmulke when he visited the synagogue
which includes off-duty police officers and licensed and trained congregants
who observed him throughout,” Schanowitz said
“Let us take comfort in the indisputable reality that when light and goodness encounter darkness
it is light and goodness that will ultimately prevail,” Schanowitz said
Masters’ group works with the FBI and the federal Department of Homeland Security to protect Jewish facilities across the country. It provided training at Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville
near Fort Worth that the rabbi and three congregants at that synagogue said they relied on when a gunman took them hostage early this year
Highland Park has a large Jewish population
but Masters said his organization hasn’t found any information to make him think the motivation for the shootings was antisemitism
“Nothing overtly we have identified in his social media posts says this was an antisemitic attack
but we are coordinating with law enforcement,” Masters said
there are some indications he was ideating around the Fourth of July for some period of time
which would indicate this was not an attack on one particular community.”
Authorities said Tuesday they didn’t have any information the attack targeted anyone by race or religion
One of the hottest vacancies in Dallas has a new tenant: The space in East Dallas shopping center Casa Linda Plaza that was formerly home to dining institution Highland Park Cafeteria will soon be serving up burgers and craft beer
The space will become the newest location of Rodeo Goat
the burger-and-beer chain from Dallas restaurateur Shannon Wynne
According to a representative from the EDENS
the restaurant is scheduled to open in spring 2022
Highland Park Cafeteria closed in May 2020 due to hardships caused by the pandemic
The iconic cafeteria had been operating at Casa Linda Plaza since 2007
HPC was hit particularly hard because of its cafeteria model
a style that became completely non-viable in the height of the virus
and Wynne has planned a number of changes that will make the location friendly in the post-pandemic world
The location's original footprint was 12,000 square feet
Rodeo Goat will occupy the outer space on the corner
"Shannon has some exciting plans that include the creation of an indoor-outdoor space with a big patio," Hale says
"He's going to put in trees so it's shaded
and will transform that spot — creating an outdoor hangout you can go to after a baseball game or a visit to the Arboretum."
It's Wynne's first foray into East Dallas (Rockwall doesn't count)
I think he started to get the funky east Dallas vibe," Hale says
EDENS received many inquiries about the space
a lot were not restaurant-related," Hale says
"But we really wanted to provide a restaurant in that space."
there's hope: The other half of the original cafeteria space
which will be snuggled between Rodeo Goat and Albertsons

.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Terry Judd | North Ottawa WeeklyTerry Judd | North Ottawa WeeklyActivist: Stevens Wharton-Bickley is leading efforts to halt the spread of oak wilt disease that has the potential of killing all of the red oaks in Grand Haven's East Highland Park Neighborhood
Many of the oaks near his outdoor deck have died or are dying and need to be removed to keep the disease from spreading
Eight other homes in the area have been affected.GRAND HAVEN -- Location
location was the main selling point for Stevens and Rita Wharton-Bickley when they purchased their home at 1818 Doris eight months ago
The home is perfectly perched high on a critical dune near Lake Michigan in Grand Haven's heavily wooded East Highland Park neighborhood
the structure remains thoroughly modern even by today's standards with virtually every room offering commanding views through large panes of glass of the thick surrounding red oak forest and its lush canopy of branches and leaves
But that all is changing; red oaks in the East Highland Park neighborhood are dying
majestic red oak trees are being ravaged by oak wilt
a fungal disease that destroys a tree's vascular system
The Wharton-Bickleys estimate they already have 30 red oaks either dead or dying from the disease
Nine other surrounding residents on Doris Avenue
Grand Avenue and Gladys Avenue also have seen another 50 or more red oaks die
"The canopy was what sold us on this home," Stevens Wharton-Bickley said
"Who would think about asking about the trees before buying a house
we found out about the oak wilt and the trees dying
Although oak wilt can infect all oak trees
members of the red oak family are most susceptible
Oaks can die within three months after being infected
And because the fungus is transmitted from tree to tree by intermingling root systems or beetles as they feed off oak sap
Educate: Inform family and neighbors to do no pruning during the warm season
15 and to promptly repair storm-damaged trees
Trench: Severe root grafts among healthy and infected trees
Inject: Trees can be injected with the fungicide Alamo
Wood should not be used for firewood unless it is sealed under a tarp during the warm season or debarked
Monitor: Hire a qualified arborist to manage trees
Michigan State University Cooperative Extension Service
horticulturists say it is imperative that all oak trees not be pruned during the growing season to prevent sap-feeding beetles from spreading the fungus
Sealants also need to be applied to trees damaged by storms
And saws used to remove diseased oaks must be thoroughly cleaned before being used on another oak tree
Residents with groupings of oak trees also can minimize the spread of the disease by having root systems linking trees severed through trenching
Anti-fungal treatments are available for infected trees
but are expensive and limited in effectiveness
Today's oak wilt problem mirrors the devastation caused in the 1970s by Dutch elm disease
also a vascular disease that wiped out most American elms that once lined streets in this country's urban areas
Even though oaks are not as plentiful in urban areas
oak forests can be wiped out in a few years
entire oak forests have been decimated and now resemble farmlands
Oak wilt has slowly been moving northward and potentially could do the same in Michigan
where red oaks can be found in the dune areas lining Lake Michigan
While the oak wilt infection in northwest Ottawa County has been confined primarily to this "pocket" in the East Highland Park neighborhood
the potential is there for the disease to spread
Cases have been recorded in Spring Lake Township's North Holiday Hills and adjacent North Ottawa Dunes and P.J
"If this gets out of this little hot zone and jumps over Doris Avenue
then you're talking about Stickney Ridge
Lake Forest Cemetery and Duncan Woods," Wharton-Bickley said
"Grand Haven is known as 'Tree City,' and there is an abundance of oak
This potentially could change the entire landscape."
a conservation technician with the Ottawa Conservation District
said it is difficult to tell when oak wilt first entered West Michigan because oaks are not as popular in highly visible urban areas as American elms once were
But the potential is there for these small pockets to spread
you are going to see large pockets of trees starting to die," she said
"There is the potential that this is like the Dutch elm disease
What you have to remember is there are still elm trees around
but diseases like these definitely have changed the landscape and we will see the same thing with the oak."
Grand Haven officials are working with the East Highland Park neighborhood to contain the disease
City Manager Pat McGinnis said the city has been working since last fall with affected residents on how best to contain and remove infected trees
"We are absolutely petrified that this could spread through neighborhoods," he said
"Our oaks are some of our most majestic trees along the lakeshore
Most have been there for decades and we're working to make sure they will be there for more decades
"All it takes is one child pounding nails for a tree fort and entire oak forest in West Michigan can change."
the city has listed oak wilt information on its Web site
It also has been working with affected residents
and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment to come up with a plan to remove the trees without further spreading the disease
These efforts have been stymied by state regulations for critical dunes and because most tree removal should be confined to dormant seasons
But because five of the 10 homes lie within critical dunes
residents must go through an expensive and lengthy permit process to remove trees and guaranteeing minimal disruption to surrounding ground cover
who is the registration agent for the East Highland Park neighborhood residents with infected trees
expressed frustration with state regulations delaying the removal of infected trees
The permit process requires a review by the Ottawa Conservation District before the application is submitted to the state NDRE
affected residents also have to pay $1,300 filing fees and another $2,000 for special permit fees
This does not include the cost homeowners will have to bear for tree removal
Wharton-Bickley said he alone will have to spend $10,000 to $15,000 to remove his 30 trees
He said state bureaucracy prevented dead trees from being removed in February as originally planned
"We have a potential time bomb on our hands if this gets out and spreads," he said
"The state seems more concerned about vegetation that will grow back a lot faster
McGinnis also expressed frustration with the lengthy regulatory permit process
which was crafted toward multi-family developments in dune areas
not toward "the public interest and preservation" - a situation he called "myopic." He said the city late last year appropriated $8,000 to help the affected residents pay for the permits
While the permit process can be frustrating
Goward said the regulations are needed to protect dune slopes and to minimize disruptions
The East Highland Park situation is unique in that it involves multiple parties and up to 100 trees
Goward said containing the disease would be difficult
"It' a horrifying tragedy having that many trees die at once," she said
But it also will open up a forest for new things to grow - hopefully to beneficial plants
and maple will come and the forest will heal itself

create a combination of flavors akin to a Samin Nosrat cookbook - salty
7.4Rappahannock Oyster BarSeafood
Downtown LA
Rappahhonnock is a fantastic oyster and seafood bar serving sweet
succulent mollusks from the Chesapeake Bay
a massive industrial complex that used to be an old American Apparel factory
But this all-day restaurant is by far the best place to eat there
with a central location right off the main entrance plus oyster po’boys
7.5RedbirdAmerican
Bunker Hill
Redbird is back with a brand-new weekend menu
it’s more beautiful than it sounds and not at all a subplot on American Horror Story)
Redbird is serving brunch dishes like lamb belly hash and kaya toast smothered in spicy cashew spreads and coconut custard
as well as buttermilk biscuits and duck confit chilaquiles
7.6Manuela907 E 3rd St Los Angeles
Southern
Arts District
The closest we’ve been to a tropical vacation over the last year was a particularly harrowing night spent staring at the old beach screensavers
If you’ve had a similar experience (we hope you haven’t)
Located right in the middle of the Arts District (and housed within an art gallery)
this Southern restaurant just launched a new tropical garden brunch
as well as vacation-ready cocktails like orange sangria and gimlets made with cucumber and mint
8.0Macheen2633 East Cesar E Chavez Avenue Los Angeles
Mexican
Boyle Heights
you’ll find Macheen slinging tacos filled with bone-in short rib
and an eight-hour-braised skate wing at Milpa Grille in Boyle Heights
owner and chef Jonathan Perez took over the small Mexican restaurant in the mornings and continues to drop some of the most unique
7.6Loupiotte KitchenFrench
Los Feliz
There’s just something about sitting on a patio in Los Feliz
and digging into a creamy risotto that screams “my life is a movie.” This tiny French café is an ideal place to spend the morning chatting with friends about how the weather’s been and your theories on the upcoming season of Succession
You’ll definitely want one of their excellent espresso drinks plus a few pastries and a very cheesy spinach and Gruyere omelette
8.1All Time2040 Hillhurst Ave Los Angeles
All Time looks like it could be any other Eastside cafe with a big patio
but it has much better food than most other Eastside cafes with big patios
but we don’t always need flowers on our avocado toast and sous vide eggs - sometimes bacon
and fantastic roasted mushrooms are more than enough
they aren’t going to hurry you off that shady patio
so it’s a great place for a lazy Sunday morning pretending you’re the kind of person who reads the paper
8.0Maury's BagelsSilver Lake
a bagel pop-up that used to always sell out at Dinosaur Coffee and the Hollywood Farmer’s Market
but the real star is the fish they cure in-house
We like the whitefish salad and traditional Nova lox
but our absolute favorite is the ikura (red caviar)
so make sure you grab a spot at one of the picnic tables outside if you can
HomeStateMustard Seed CafeJust What I KneadedBakery/Cafe
Frogtown
Some people may think the words “gluten-free” and “vegan” have no business in baked goods
and obviously have never been to Just What I Kneaded
this bright and airy Frogtown shop serves dairy-free scones
Expect giant cinnamon rolls that come with what feels like a pound of icing
and their signature Poptarts decorated with horoscope designs
7.2SalazarSpoke Bicycle CafeEl CochinitoThis spot is Permanently Closed
Cuban
El Cochinito took a strip mall in Silver Lake and turned it into a day in Havana: there’s a light breeze on the patio
and old regulars chit chat amongst themselves while nursing ice-cold lagers
Although there is no formal brunch menu here
this classic Cuban restaurant has tons of great food
Their pollo empanizado - a deep-fried chicken dish served with maduros - is a standout and there’s an award-winning Cubano
7.1Casita del CampoV TreeVegetarian
This soul food restaurant serves brunch like you’d have it in the South - biscuits and gravy
chef Velvet Jacobs turned her plant-based pop-up into a restaurant and now offers some of the best soul food around
get the soul plate - it comes with all the heavy hitters
8.1All Day BabyThis spot is Permanently Closed
You’ll find this all-day restaurant (get it
do you get it?) in a bright-red building on Sunset Blvd slinging hot chicken sandwiches and breakfast burritos the size of newborns
It’s definitely one of the livelier places to grab a meal in Silver Lake
filled with chic-looking families with young children and Gen Z-ers wearing sunglasses that are too small for their face
Order the ADB biscuit sandwich - it comes with scrambled eggs
and is slathered in their signature strawberry jam
7.5Marco Polo4141 Santa Monica Blvd Los Angeles
Italian
If your preferred vision of brunch includes sunbathing by the pool
perhaps it’s time to book a reservation at Marco Polo
The sunny Mediterranean/seafood/Italian-ish (there’s a lot going on here) restaurant is attached to the Silver Lake Pool & Inn and is a great place to spend a Saturday afternoon while pretending you’re in Naples and chugging Aperol spritzes
7.6Botanica1620 Silver Lake Boulevard Los Angeles
The fact that there’s now a restaurant that says they believe “healthful cooking can be vibrant
and wildly satisfying” means we’ve hit peak Silver Lake
But the good news is peak Silver Lake still means food you actually want to get out of bed for
Botanica is located on Silver Lake Blvd a few blocks from the reservoir and is the kind of bright
airy cafe you only thought existed in Katherine Heigl movies
and its produce-focused menu is the brunch you need after that 2am burrito last night
Millie's CafeDiner
but few compete with one of the oldest brunches of them all: Millie’s
The 90-year-old breakfast landmark has been curing LA’s hangovers since prohibition
with everything from omelets to benedicts to burritos to something they call the Devil’s Mess
It’s an Eastside classic that’s always there when you just need eggs in front of your face ASAP
SazónThis spot is Permanently Closed
Huntington Park
One of the Eastside’s hottest new places for brunch is Sazon
a Huntington Park restaurant specializing in Mexican street food
Things here get turned up to a 10 on the weekends
which is when you’ll witness queer Latinx DJs spinning soul tracks
So grab your most colorful outfit and a comfortable pair of shoes
then get ready to dance while enjoying pozole verde
8.2Angry Egret DinetteThis spot is Permanently Closed
Chinatown
Yes, the sandwiches at Angry Egret Dinette are technically tortas, but they’re also so much more than that. Much like Baby in Dirty Dancing, you can’t box Wes Avila’s (the former chef at Guerilla Tacos) creations into a specific corner
This Chinatown shop packs sandwiches with pretty much anything your brain can think up
What about gyro beef smothered in American cheese or shiitake mushrooms and home fries
Grab a seat on their colorful patio and consider trying one of each
7.5Foo Chow RestaurantChinese
Not all restaurants can say they served as a set piece in Rush Hour (or paint that fact onto the side of their building)
this Chinatown restaurant has had star power since the 1990’s - but unlike most big shots from that era
They’ve added a beautiful al fresco patio to their courtyard
where you’ll eat Chinese favorites like sweet & sour fish and wonton soup in the shadow of their large
jade green building and beneath a million swaying red paper lanterns
SteepFriends & FamilyEast Hollywood
Friends & Family is a neighborhood spot that doesn’t have any kind of brunch scene
but does have very good eggs and baked goods
you might see people catching up over pancakes
right next to roommates slowly consuming patty melts to bring themselves back to life
If you’ve just moved from Chicago to Los Feliz and feel like you haven’t found your go-to Sunday morning spot yet
head here and order that patty melt and the olive oil fried eggs
Square One DiningThis spot is Permanently Closed
Square One has been around for years and is still the Eastside’s best option for a simple
They’re open until 3pm and lines can get long here on the weekends
but the newer Square One on Hyperion in Silver Lake has the same great food and is order-at-the-counter if you don’t have all day
Eating the brioche French toast is a religious experience
Lady Byrd CafeEcho Park
In what might just be the most oxygen-filled set-up in town
Lady Byrd Cafe has placed plant-filled greenhouses around every table
ensuring maximum English garden aesthetics
Couple that with a menu that includes breakfast burritos
and this all-day cafe in Echo Park might just have as good of a patio as you’ll ever find
Super RichThis spot is Permanently Closed
Japanese
This Japanese onigiri shop makes lunch feel like visiting an art gallery - picturesque rice balls come decorated with ikura
or coyly covered with shiso leaves like a snack version of Adam and Eve
like spicy tuna onigiri and kimchi fried chicken
7.6Cafe BirdieThis spot is Permanently Closed
Highland Park
Cafe Birdie is a place you should go whether you’re a Highland Park local or it’s your first Saturday on York Street
and the room is nice enough that you could bring your mom here for birthday brunch
but not so nice that you can’t just show up after a Sunday morning hike
We like the shakshuka and the biscuits and gravy
and their lamb breakfast - flatbread with lamb
Lemon Poppy KitchenEastern European
Glassell Park
Lemon Poppy Kitchen is a small cafe in a Glassell Park strip mall that serves Romanian breakfast staples like housemade pastries
and planchitas - flatbreads stuffed with everything from feta and dill to bacon and cheddar
The Satellite is an Eastside staple and the best place to grab a few drinks and watch people like Beck become superstars
Verdugo Bar has a fantastic back patio and an excellent beer selection

East Topeka residents expressed excitement Friday about a proposed Walmart Supercenter that is being planned for an area just southeast of S.E
who asked to be identified only as Marilyn
as she purchased a soda at a gas station at S.E
“I’d like to see a CVS and a Hy-Vee over here
a man who asked to be identified only as John
“I think the whole area would like it,” he said
whose District 3 includes much of East Topeka
expressed excitement about the development in an email Friday to fellow council members and Shawnee County commissioners
Ortiz wrote that it was “Long Overdue!!!!”
At the Topeka Unified School District 501 board meeting Thursday night
it was announced the district has sold 17 acres of land in East Topeka for the site of a new Walmart Supercenter
Walmart Real Estate Business Trust has signed an agreement with Midwest
which is south of Highland Park High School
The land is just north and east of a Dillons grocery store at S.E
Several other small businesses are located along the west side of the property between the 2500 and 2700 blocks of S.E
The existing businesses include a Dollar General store
a Shimer feed store and a BP gas station and convenience store
Longtime Topekans will remember the land where the proposed Walmart will be located as the former home of the Community Drive-in Theater and Boyles Joyland amusement park
both of which were torn down more than 20 years ago
manager of the California BP station at 2740 S.E
said Friday morning he hadn’t yet heard the news about the proposed Walmart
he immediately thought of his business neighbor across the street
“I’ll bet Dillons is shaking in their boots,” he said
Cavanaugh said he believed everyone in the Highland Park and East Topeka areas would welcome a Walmart Supercenter
particularly considering there are so few retail offerings on that side of town
“I think the neighbors would love it,” said Cavanaugh
“I’m guessing the majority of folks that live over here in Highland Park frequent Walmart
If Walmart plans on buying street-front property along S.E
California Avenue for better access to its store
and displacing current property owners in the process
the retail giant better think twice — at least when it comes to the BP station
Cavanaugh said he didn’t think Walmart coming to East Topeka would adversely affect other stores in the immediate area
And he said he wasn’t counting out Dillons
which has been the lone grocery store on the city’s southeast side for a number of years
Cavanaugh pointed out that a Dillons in North Topeka “seems to be doing well” even though a Walmart Supercenter was built across the street from it a few years ago
The excitement surrounding new retail development in East Topeka was tempered somewhat by concerns over traffic problems that could be caused from a store like Walmart
Cavanaugh said east-side streets have been neglected for years
California Avenue should have been made into a five-lane street years ago
28th is four lanes and is the scene of frequent auto accidents
The new store would be the city’s fourth Walmart
though no timetable has been revealed for construction startup
Other existing Walmart Superstore locations in Topeka are at 2600 N.W
The Topeka Capital-Journal attempted to reach Walmart officials for comment

Superior Court Judge Dennis Nieves also ordered Franklin J
to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law and be placed on community supervision for life
Burr was convicted on June 1 of endangering the welfare of a child
But the jury was unable to decide whether he was also guilty of sexually touching the 9-year-old girl during private piano lessons in Edison between November 2002 and January 2004
declared a mistrial on the sexual assault charge
but the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office will retry Burr on the charge
This was the second trial for Burr on the charges
He was convicted of both charges in October 2004 and sentenced to six years in prison
but an appeals court panel overturned the conviction and sentence in 2007
a decision affirmed a year later by the state Supreme Court
The two courts ruled Burr should have been allowed to present evidence he suffered from Asperger’s syndrome
The original trial judge denied a defense request to call a psychiatrist to explain Asperger’s to the jury
Medical experts said sufferers of Asperger’s syndrome are usually intelligent but lack an appreciation of social skills
Burr was credited today with 1,093 days already served in prison after his initial conviction
for which he was originally sentenced to six years in prison
The defense argued Burr had already served almost three years in prison
But the judge had Burr taken away in handcuffs
saying it was the parole board’s decision whether to release him or keep him behind bars
Burr had been free since his first conviction was overturned and had moved from East Brunswick to Highland Park

Home » News » Highland Creek Trail Walk: Morningside Park to East Point Park
you may spot wildlife like a white-tailed deer or red fox
The trail starts off following a narrow and winding Highland Creek
where the river banks are often bordered by large rock and sandy areas
this is a great place to catch a glimpse of the salmon run
the Don and Highland Creek team at TRCA organizes an annual Salmon Festival in Morningside Park
This year’s event will take place on October 2
you’ll notice several native and invasive species of plants and wildflowers
Note how high the invasive European common reed (Phragmites) tower over the speed sign in the photo below
The photo below shows the toll that strong water flows have on Highland Creek
These flows have eroded the bank so much that some concrete pipe infrastructure has fallen into the creek
Signs of erosion are especially common in the sandy bank areas of Colonel Danforth Park. Soil erosion continues to be an issue in Highland Creek
Several of these erosion scars can measure 30 to 70 cm high
erosion has led to an unnatural widening of the channel
causing water to flow as a thin sheet over a broad area
notice how the trees on the left side have fallen into the valley
Found along the trail was this giant ichneumon wasp
It may look like it has a terrifying stinger
but it’s actually a very long ovipositor used for egg-laying
Her powerful needle-like ovipositor is strong enough to inject itself into live trees or logs so she can lay her eggs
While the trail is for the most part litter free
An overhead utility pipe crosses over the path
These pipes are usually conduits for telephone and fiber optics lines
A scenic walk to East Point Park along this bridge
Make your way down to the beach at East Point Park
This 55-hectare park along the water’s edge is a great place to stop for lunch or spot some interesting wildflowers and birds
