Kezia Abraham of East Meadow returns the birdie during a girls Nassau badminton match against Bellmore JFK on Thursday
Senior Kezia Abraham yelled out “Rach” as the birdie came flying toward her end of the court
tied at 19 in the second game of the first doubles badminton matchup between East Meadow District and Bellmore JFK
who stepped up and lofted a high shot back to give her and Abraham time to reset
Seconds later they won the point and eventually the match
over Bellmore JFK’s Samantha Phillips and Elizabeth Reznik
and that’s exactly where East Meadow finds itself after its 7-0 road win over Bellmore JFK Thursday in Nassau III
That chemistry between Abraham and Lam began suddenly last year as the former’s partner suffered a torn ACL
leading Lam to step in despite having only played exhibition matches before
“It was very stressful [at the start],” Lam said
I was so used to how my other partner played,” Abraham said
All the things I’m flawed at she’s really good at.”
who also worked her way up after starting in fourth doubles
pointed to the team’s progression as a reason for its success
Senior Mina Yang — also 9-3 on the season was one of those players
beginning as an exhibition player before working her way to first singles
That role saw her defeat Bellmore JFK’s Alexa Isaac in three games
After losing the first game Yang used what she saw to adjust her process
“I learned that every time I would give her a long serve
it would be [returned] as a straight drive,” Yang said
Second doubles duo Caitlyn Viegas and Valentina Monteverde managed to close out a two-game win over Holishka Sehgal and Logan Minster with a 22-20 finish in game 2
and third doubles Celina Yu and Jade Castaneda defeated Juliet Cener and Jillian Rosenkrantz in three games
Each contributed to East Meadow’s five-game winning streak
leading to a clash with Nassau III leaders Division and Manhasset next week
every player helped create what Lam described as “a home,” one that Yang appreciates now more than ever as her senior season winds down
I wouldn’t be playing badminton right now,” Yang said

Daron Lake is mobbed by East Meadow teammates after singling home winning run in bottom of seventh against MacArthur on Thursday
Daron Lake has developed a knack for the clutch
who had a walk-off fielder’s choice in a non-league win over Calhoun on April 1
stepped to the plate against MacArthur on Thursday in a tie ballgame with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning
With the infield in and the outfield at shallow depth
Lake barreled a 1-and-1 pitch to rightfield for a walk-off single that scored Trevor Smith in host East Meadow’s 3-2 victory in a Nassau Conference AA-I baseball game
“I definitely feel like I have a lot of confidence in those situations,” Lake said
“I put in the work to be able to perform in high-pressure situations.”
Said coach Bill O’Connor: “He's got a pretty good approach
I thought he was due for a big hit at the right time
the outfield’s up — I had a pretty good feeling about that.”
Leadoff hitter Eric Garcia and Smith worked back-to-back walks to start the bottom of the seventh for East Meadow (7-3
5-1) played perfect bunt defense in the ensuing at-bat
Joe Lanza was intentionally walked to load the bases for Lake
gave me the confidence to step up in there and win it for the team.”
MacArthur took a 1-0 lead on Dylan Tripi’s RBI sac fly in the top of the first inning
East Meadow went ahead 2-1 in the bottom half after Ryan Lauth hit an RBI single and Nick Ramalhete scored on a passed ball

Olivia DeMicco #11 of Carle Place breaks a scoreless tie with a two-out hit that plated a run in the bottom of the fourth inning of Nassau softball game against East Meadow on Tuesday
Olivia DeMicco was constantly thinking about how to drive in runs for Carle Place
The answer she come up with: stop thinking about it
DeMicco had two hits and three RBIs as Carle Place defeated visiting East Meadow
in a Nassau III/IV crossover game on Tuesday
Carle Place had runners on in the first two innings and on second and third with one out in the third inning
DeMicco hit a single up the middle on a full count to drive in Giulia Scibilia with the game's first run
I overthought things at the plate,” DeMicco said
“I was thinking about driving in every run before
now I just want to put the ball in play and see what happens.”
driving in two runs to extend Carle Place’s lead to 5-0
Aryanna Perea singled to drive in Roman and Alexa Mifsud tripled to bring in DeMicco and Perea
“The team has been working on moving those runners around and in,” Carle Place coach Alyssa Allen said
“We’ve been good at getting them in scoring position
but now it’s time to have quality at-bats and bring them home."
Marissa Nosovitch handled keeping runs off the board
The senior allowed three hits through six innings before exiting the game
East Meadow (2-7) loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh inning and Gabriella Shepherd hit a triple to drive in Ashley Lipack and Grace Moone
Nosovitch re-entered the game and struck out the final batter

“Now we’re at the point where we realize we want to go out there and win
Carle Place (7-4) has had a strong past few days
the Frogs picked up a 7-1 win over Oceanside
the top team in Nassau’s strongest conference
Nosovitch had 16 strikeouts in the win and now has 10 double-digit strikeout performances on the season

Stop by the Nostalgia Vintage & Thrift Shop in East Meadow and you’ll quickly notice a wide selection of second-hand treasures upcycled by April Senra and her daughter Lily, fashion content creators who are on an endless search for donated clothing and accessories in need of a second life.
Every item in the store is handpicked, washed and steamed before going on sale. The Senras said they aim to provide a boutique shopping experience at affordable prices.
Opening weekend at the shop — located at 534 E Meadow Ave. — earlier this month was filled with excitement. Coinciding with April Senra’s birthday, Nostalgia Vintage was filled with curious shoppers, family and friends.
“Knowing so many people loved our message of shopping sustainably, along with being a mother and daughter duo, made us so excited for our future,” April Senra said. “It was just beautiful and warmed my heart.”
Adding to the excitement of opening day, Lily Senra created a borderline viral TikTok post that drew a long line outside the store before its opening.
“That was the moment I blacked out,” Lily Senra quipped. “We had a line for both the dressing room and the register at the same time, so we had to work double time. It was a bit stressful, but in the most satisfying way! It was so surreal seeing people from all over Long Island support a small business and wish my mom a happy birthday!”

The process of opening the store was quite an undertaking
the two walked into their ideal storefront
and had nine days to prepare it for opening day

But when it comes to buying items for re-sale in their store
it mainly depends on whether the Senras like the item
Their desire to offer a wide range of sizes and styles that will appeal to all shoppers is also a motivating factor in their selection
The duo is driven by their love for thrifting
where one-of-a-kind pieces can be found and unnecessary waste can be eliminated
April Senra grew up thrifting with her mother for as long as she can remember
passing down that passion for fashion to her daughter
Lily Senra has enjoyed finding hidden gems with her friends in thrift stores to create throwback outfits.“I love knowing that every piece has a story,” she said
“Especially if it’s something vintage before my lifetime
It makes the item so much more valuable and special.”

The district's fiscal stress level has been downgraded from "significant" to "moderate." Credit: Newsday/Steve Pfost
The Amityville school district's fiscal stress level improved in the 2023-24 school year, going from "significant" to "moderate," according to a report issued Friday by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli
The district was among three on Long Island identified in the report as facing varying degrees of fiscal stress
A total of 22 districts statewide were singled out
One of two systems in the state facing "significant" stress — the highest level of fiscal trouble — is tiny New Suffolk on the Island's North Fork. Residents there voted in March to shut down instruction at their local school and send students to a neighboring district
Four districts statewide, including Amityville, were listed as under "moderate" stress. Amityville's school board last year approved layoffs of 47 staff members
East Meadow in Nassau County was among 16 districts identified as "susceptible" to stress
the state's mildest of the three categories
Get the latest updates on how education is changing in your district
The stress level designations were for the school year ending June 30, 2024. The 22 districts identified were an increase from 16 systems the prior year
said in a prepared statement that her district's improved rating reflected recent efforts to build an operating surplus and strengthen its financial standing
Talbert added that she expected that trend to continue
"We remain deeply committed to ensuring the financial health of our District while prioritizing the needs of our students and staff," she said
a community advocate who criticized the layoffs and was elected to Amityville's school board in May
told Newsday that the district should restore some programs lost in last year's cuts — notably
"The good news is that we are improving
but it's going to take quite some time to achieve financial stability," Canestro said in a phone interview
"We're still on shaky ground."
did not dispute the comptroller's rating of his district
But he told Newsday that the district was satisfied with its new arrangement
in which all resident children of school age are sent to classes in the nearby Southold system
New Suffolk had previously operated its own school for prekindergarten through sixth grade
with higher grades attending classes in Southold
The district decided to stop offering its own classes on the grounds that it did not have enough students to maintain a full program
The district retained its own administration to allow it to negotiate tuition rates
New Suffolk continues to set its own tax rate
which is low compared to rates in districts further west
"We're doing great," Vasile-Cozzo said during a phone interview
Superintendent Kenneth Rosner described the district's financial condition as good
attributed the rating to a change in fiscal procedures that requires East Meadow to use short-term borrowing to pay some expenses
The change was prompted by a new schedule of tax payments to the district from Hempstead Town
"The district's overall financial operations are in good standing
and we are not art any risk of being fiscally stressed," the schools chief said
The state's stress scores are based on multiple factors
including a district's year-end fund balances
operating deficits and reliance on short-term borrowing
DiNapoli noted in a press release Friday that the latest number of stressed districts

Life on Long Island has contradictions: the feeling of having open space with one’s front and back yards
and amid the identical tract houses in a maze of winding streets
and towns serve as spaces for wildlife and experiencing Long Island as it was before suburbanization
and small animals that is locked behind a fence but often trespassed and trashed
to the dismay of the civic activists who fought for its preservation
The lake is hidden behind a fence and dense forestry
designed to be inaccessible so that wildlife can thrive
The unnamed pond borders on Senator Speno Park
the sizable green space amid the single-family homes
East Meadow takes its name from the Hempstead Plains
the once-vast grassland that stretched from present-day Eisenhower Park
The preserve was dedicated by Nassau County Executive tom Gulotta on June 12, 1997, along with activists from CEMCO, which stands for Council of East Meadow Community Organizations, a civic group created to foster a sense of identity for neighbors and a forum to share concerns on schools, public safety, development, and preservation. Under the leadership of Joe Parisi
the unused stormwater recharge basin next to Speno Park was declared as a preserve
better known for designating the Hempstead Plains Preserve next to Nassau Community College
Using the Nassau County LRV (Land Records Viewer)
the pond site in 1926 was a forest bordering on the grassland
East Meadow Road runs diagonally on this survey and Newbridge Road (State Route 106) runs north-south) Most of the open space here is farmland with the grid of the future suburb mapped out and awaiting development
A year later, Joseph H. Goldblatt’s East Hempstead Sand and Gravel Corporation began digging here for sand and minerals
suburban development rapidly picked up and the sand pit was surrounded by residences
The newcomers complained of noise and pollution
demanding that the county shut this operation
Town of Hempstead made its way to the Supreme Court in 1962
which ruled in favor of the government taking away the business in favor of a park and stormwater basin
Goldblatt then fought with the town on the value of the land being taken by eminent domain
The attorney representing the neighbors was Edward Speno, who later served as a State Senator. When the namesake park opened in October 1989
it followed twelve years of planning and construction at a cost of over $2.5 million.
Although there is signage on the border fence that this pond is county property forbidden to trespassers
people want to get away from suburbia but then they leave trash in a pond where aquatic and amphibian species live
CEMCO and the local Scouts organize cleanup events
but perhaps there’s one more thing that can be done here to allow for public access without ruining the natural condition of the pond
unlocking the secrets of these fenced parcels of forest and water behind their backyards

Brendan Cronin of East Meadow hits a three-pointer against Farmingdale in the final minutes of the fourth quarter during a Nassau Conference II boys basketball game at Farmingdale on Friday
The goal is pretty simple this season for the East Meadow boys basketball team
“Our goal is to win every game we play,” coach Tom Rottkamp said
So we want to win a conference championship
and just see how far our talent can take us.”
It has been 45 years since East Meadow’s last conference championship
The program has never claimed a Nassau crown
But there’s hope now with all 12 players back from last season and talent among them
The Jets fell behind by 13 with 4:41 left in the third quarter Friday at Farmingdale
then yielded only five points the rest of the way and won
“We’re definitely capable of winning a title this year for East Meadow,” senior guard Mazin Ibrahem said after scoring 24 points
The Jets chipped their 13-point deficit to 43-38 after three quarters
then followed with another at the buzzer — a heave from a little inside the midcourt line
“It really brought a lot of energy,” Casseus said
That 6-0 burst became a 15-0 run and a 47-43 lead
The Jets outscored Farmingdale 15-2 in the final quarter
“They were just more tougher and physical than us
which was a little disappointing,” Dalers coach Jim Pastier said
Jake Mangio had nine of his 10 points to power a 16-5 run by formidable Farmingdale (8-3
Erik Kubelka powered a 12-1 Dalers run to start the third quarter
contributing two three-pointers and 10 points
didn’t score again after the 10-point burst and finished with 18
“We switched from a standard zone to a box-and-one because Jake Mangio is a great player,” Rottkamp said
And then when Erik Kubelka started lighting it up
Mangio scored his 1,000th career point on Tuesday in a win over Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK
“It was great that I got to do it at a home game in front of my family and all my friends,” the senior guard said
My goal is to win a county championship.”

Leon Campo said school district officials responded to his defense of an administrator by falsely accusing him at a school board meeting of mismanagement
and removing his name from a district center
A former East Meadow school superintendent has filed a $35 million lawsuit against the district asserting that officials threatened and retaliated against him for defending an administrator who he said was terminated unfairly due to his race and age
said district officials responded to his defense of the administrator by falsely accusing him at a school board meeting of mismanagement and removing his name from a district center
according to the lawsuit filed Tuesday in U.S
the truth should prevail," Campo said in an interview Thursday
"There are those who did not want the truth to prevail
The lawsuit names as defendants the East Meadow district
Assistant Superintendent Patrick Pizzo and current and former members of the board of education
said in a statement that the district is aware of the lawsuit filed by Campo
as it generally does not comment on pending litigation
An attempt to reach Card by phone Friday was unsuccessful
It is not known if Pizzo has legal representation
He did not respond to several attempts to reach him by phone and email for comment
Campo served in several administrative posts in East Meadow from 1974 to his retirement in 2008
including assistant business administrator
assistant superintendent for finance and administration
He returned to the district to serve stints as superintendent in 2008 and from 2015 to 2017
Campo said he had already left the district when officials fired administrator Arthur Williams in 2019
is Black and had served as supervisor for facilities and transportation for the district
He was told he was fired for "incompetence," the lawsuit said
he alleged that during his time as interim superintendent between 2015 and 2017
Pizzo used racist and demeaning language among his criticisms of Williams
Williams filed a complaint with the state Division of Human Rights asserting the district discriminated against him due to his race and age
Campo submitted to the commission his own recollections of Pizzo’s discriminatory comments regarding Williams
Pizzo then threatened to damage Campo’s reputation and remove his name from the district’s Leon J
Campo Salisbury Center unless he recanted those statements
During an East Meadow school board meeting on May 24
Pizzo publicly accused Campo of improperly “closing out” multimillion-dollar building projects and referred to his “gross incompetence,” the lawsuit said
The school board voted to remove Campo’s name from the center
The board members were aware that Campo had spoken out against the treatment of Williams
Campo said the assertions against him were false
Campo had done and continues to do for [the] district seemingly evaporated due to the retaliatory animus and vengeance of defendant Pizzo
which was agreed to and accepted by defendant district and board,” the lawsuit said
Pizzo is slated to become superintendent of the Robbinsville school district in New Jersey in January
according to a news release from that district
said: “This is an important case because it is a second level of abuse from the East Meadow district
in trying to silence someone speaking out for justice for someone else.”

“[Boultadakis] explained that he held him until [Melnikoff] stopped fighting," Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney Dena Rizopoulos told District Judge Evan Tannenbaum at Boultadakis’ arraignment Tuesday
according to a transcript of the proceeding
an employee with the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department
pleaded not guilty to a single count of second-degree murder and was ordered by Tannenbaum to be held at the county jail without bail
Rizopoulos outlined how the account given to police Monday
after investigators arrested Boultadakis at his home
differed from his initial statement to police following a 911 reporting that Melnikoff was unconscious at the bottom of the stairs in the basement of a home they shared on Horton Drive in Huntington Station on Aug
Boultadakis alleged that he was performing CPR on his partner during the 6:30 a.m
"He indicated they had a lovely Sunday together watching movies in bed all day long," Rizopoulos told the court
"and that at some time in the evening they had a disagreement in the basement
He did not see John again until the next morning."
Melnikoff’s manner of death was ruled a homicide after an autopsy revealed soft tissue hemorrhaging on the left side of his neck and a fractured hyoid bone
adding that the medical examiner determined that neck compressions caused his death
In the videotaped interview at Suffolk County police headquarters in Yaphank Monday
Boultadakis told investigators the alleged fight occurred after he revealed to Melnikoff that he was no longer attracted to him and would like to return home to live with his parents in Nassau County
Boultadakis said Melnikoff was armed with a knife and a bottle of moonshine
and had threatened to harm his parents and said he would send sexually explicit images of him to his friends
hell will break loose for you," Boultadakis told detectives he said to Melnikoff on the evening of the altercation
Rizopoulos said Boultadakis told detectives during the video interview that "he would [expletive] and piss on [Melnikoff’s] grave."
who was appointed to represent Boultadakis at his arraignment Tuesday
told Tannenbaum his client has no prior criminal record and he denies the charges
"I’m hearing things about [Melnikoff] carrying the knife," Bassett told the judge
"Even assuming in arguendo the partial accuracy of this statement
it sounds like at least the makings of a self-defense claim."
Bassett did not respond to a phone message seeking comment this week
Suffolk District Attorney Ray Tierney and the Suffolk County Police Department both declined to comment
Rizopoulos said in court Tuesday that Boultadakis flew to Florida and lived there for a short time after the alleged killing before moving into his parents’ home in East Meadow
She said he told police that he had confessed the killing to his parents
"They were never told anything about anything," Bassett shot back as he made his argument for bail
Bassett described Boultadakis’ parents as "pillars in their community," who he said were present in the courtroom to support their son at his arraignment
Oyster Bay spokesman Brian Nevin said Boultadakis was hired as a part time laborer in June 2019
He became a full time laborer the following March
most recently working for the Parks Department

looks to drive to the net during the Nassau Class AA girls basketball quarterfinals against Division at East Meadow on Tuesday
East Meadow High School and Division High School are less than three miles apart and the only thing that surpassed the environment inside the packed East Meadow gymnasium the geographic rivals created was the action on the floor
Both teams generated standout performances in their postseason matchup
the defending Long Island Class AA champions proved they aren’t willing to give up that title easily
East Meadow senior Allie Twible received a pass in the post and was determined to deliver a victory
The ball was momentarily knocked out of her hands
but she corralled it before it hit the floor
ducked under a defender and made the winning layup with 13 seconds left to give host East Meadow a two-point lead as the third-seeded Jets defeated No
in the girls basketball Nassau Class AA quarterfinals on Tuesday night
“I knew I had to put it up and get the lead
I just knew after that my team was going to take it.”
on March 3 at Farmingdale State College in the Nassau Class AA semifinals
“Allie’s a gamer,” coach Peter Olenik said
“She’s one of the most competitive players I’ve ever coached
She’s just really a great player and comes up big in great moments.”
Twible finished with 16 points and Emily Zaradich had 19 points
Zaradich made a three-pointer with 4:06 left to knot the score at 60
She also corralled the final rebound off an intentionally missed free throw with four seconds left and made a foul shot for the game’s final point
“It was really exhilarating and also very nerve-wracking
“All I could hear was the crowd and I was really willing myself and telling myself I can do this and my team can rely on me.”
Alice Beckett had 23 points and Emma Robins had 22 points for Division (17-5)
including going 2 of 2 at the foul line with 30.1 seconds left to tie the score at 65
Division held one-point leads after the first quarter and at halftime before a second half that featured seven lead changes and four ties
The Jets led 54-53 entering the fourth quarter and it remained a one-possession contest the rest of t he game
I told the girls at half it was going to be whoever had the ball last [would win] and that’s really what it turned into
East Meadow won the Long Island Class AA championship last season and knows it will be a challenge to defend that title
Tuesday’s contest was another reminder of that in a back-and-forth postseason atmosphere
but we just relied on each other the whole game,” Twible said
The energy was amazing and especially coming from last year’s playoff run
