The Eaton fire has burned 10,600 acres and prompted evacuations in the area west of the Eaton Canyon Golf Course
Officials also told people living on these streets to evacuate immediately: Kinneloa Canyon Road
Grand Oaks Avenue and areas east of Altadena Drive
north of New York Drive and west of Sierra Madre Villa Avenue
Pasadena ordered mandatory evacuations “for the area north of New York Drive
please take all necessary items with you to be prepared to leave for an extended period of time.”
Pasadena spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said authorities want residents in the path of the Eaton Canyon fire to heed warnings
She said the strong winds have prompted officials to suspend air coverage
leaving firefighters on the ground to protect homes and save lives
Firefighters were trying to evacuate several people from a convalescent home near Washington Boulevard and Altadena Drive
Derderian said the strong winds and intensity of the fire are reminiscent of the fires in the 1990s, including the 1993 Kinneloa fire, which destroyed 196 buildings in Altadena.
Residents less than three miles away from the Eaton Canyon fire could see orange flames and smell fire from inside their homes.
Just before they received a mandatory evacuation order, they inched their way down from Altadena as firetrucks raced past them, navigating their way without traffic lights affected by power outage.
Those who have lived in the area for decades and experienced the last major fire in the Pasadena area said they’d never experienced anything like this. One woman said it took about 30 minutes to get 10 blocks as people were “desperately trying to get out.”
All schools will be closed Wednesday in the Pasadena Unified School District because of the fire.
Several other school districts including Alhambra, Glendale, Burbank, San Marino and South Pasadena are also closing.
A separate fire in Pasadena, the Bert Fire, had expanded to three acres just before 10 p.m. Tuesday night, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The fire is in east Pasadena, near San Gabriel and several miles from the blazing Eaton fire.
The blaze comes amid intense winds that sparked a destructive fire in Pacific Palisades on Tuesday.
Fire officials say the winds are expected to intensify overnight.

Print Los Angeles County officials are asking the Pasadena community for help identifying a person who has been leaving foods that are poisonous to dogs near a canine boarding and daycare facility
Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger called on Pasadena residents who live or work near Foothill Boulevard to look out for a person who is leaving grapes and chocolate alongside rice or noodles to entice dogs by Dogtopia of East Pasadena
Grapes and chocolate are poisonous foods for dogs, according to the Humane Society of the United States.
In a news release Barger said the unidentified person needs to be stopped because “animal cruelty should never be tolerated.”
“I am outraged that someone is going out of their way to hurt dogs and their unsuspecting owners who are just enjoying a trot down Foothill Boulevard,” Barger said.
On July 3, two hikers found a dog near Malibu Creek Canyon with a zip tie around his mouth and another around his neck.
In a video shared by the boarding facility, a person can be seen crouching by a dirt patch on the street corner in front of Dogtopia and putting something on the ground — the corner is shaded and it’s unclear what the person is doing.
Jacks Vasquez said the act captured by her business’ surveillance camera is just one incident. Someone has been leaving grapes and chocolate M&Ms at various spots along a 1.5-mile stretch of Foothill Boulevard for several months now, according to a news release.
“I’m sick to my stomach knowing that someone is doing this in broad daylight,” Vasquez said.
The person is leaving food in walkways on Foothill Boulevard between Sierra Madre and Rosemead boulevards.
Vasquez, who has been in the animal care and veterinary field for over a decade, said “consuming even the smallest amount of grapes can be lethal” to dogs. Chocolate, she added, can make dogs very sick “and result in thousands of dollars in veterinary bills.”
“I’ve been warning customers but am worried the word won’t get out to the community at large,” she said.
Authorities say they found more than 40 dogs unattended in a home in Thermal
Pasadena police officials said reports of any suspicious activity related to the incident can be directed to the police department
“Any actual and reported cruelty to animals will be taken very seriously and with assertive enforcement,” said Gene Harris

Pasadena’s Department of Planning and Community Development is recommending approval of a Concept Design Review for a new mixed-use development at 2771 E
The city’s Design Commission will review the proposal at its regular meeting on Tuesday
before the project advances to the Pasadena City Council for final approval
will replace two commercial buildings currently operating as a mechanic shop
The development will include 4,318 square feet of ground floor commercial space and 20 residential units
the 34,357-square-foot project will provide 57 parking spaces
with commercial parking at ground level accessed from Wenger Alley and residential parking underground accessed from Foothill Boulevard
The Planning Department said the project is a rectangular 22,609-square-foot site that sits at the northwest corner of E
office and service-related uses ranging from one to three stories in height
developed by Jon Kelly of Tyler+Kelly Architecture with landscape architect Ed Siribohdi
underwent revisions following preliminary consultation with the Design Commission on Oct
The architectural style shifted from Spanish Colonial Revival to vernacular industrial
“The local context along Foothill Blvd
is home to a variety of building styles and typologies,” the architect said in response to earlier Commission comments
“Many of the more successful buildings rely on character-defining elements like expansive openings
The development includes outdoor amenity spaces for residents
balconies on upper floors and a rooftop terrace
“Instead of reserving the top floor as a penthouse
the penthouse was removed and in its place we put an outdoor shared amenity,” the architect noted
“This provides a location away from the busy Foothill Boulevard for residents to enjoy and see the view north toward the mountains.”
The project will utilize the City’s Affordable Housing Concession Menu
which allows an increased height limit of up to 12 feet in exchange for providing on-site affordable housing
The building will be 48 feet high at its tallest point
A Historic Resource Evaluation completed in August 2023 concluded that the existing buildings
“do not possess any historical significance and do not meet the criteria for landmark designation.”
The Design Commission meeting begins at 6:30 p.m
in the City Council Chamber at City Hall and is open to the public
Bed Bath & Beyond announced on Sunday that it has filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey
The company plans to conduct a “limited” process to sell some or all of its business
including the one located in Hastings Ranch on Foothill Blvd
as well as the 120 Buy Buy Baby stores and the brand’s websites will remain open
the 52-year-old retailer has raised $240 million from the investment firm Sixth Street Specialty Lending
Bed Bath & Beyond has been struggling with poor sales and competition from big-box retailers for some time
The company had warned about the possibility of bankruptcy earlier in the year
Bed Bath & Beyond closed a location of its cosmetics division
Despite efforts to raise cash by selling more shares
the company was unable to avoid the bankruptcy filing due to its poor financial performance and strict credit agreement
Earlier this year the company’s CEO and president
blamed the poor performance on inventory constraints and reduced credit limits that resulted in shortages of merchandise on store shelves
Fire broke out early Friday morning at a vacant commercial building in East Pasadena
causing an estimated $250,000 in damage before firefighters brought it under control
according to Pasadena Fire Department spokesperson Lisa Derderian
to a commercial building in the 2000 block East Colorado Boulevard in response to a report of an outside fire
firefighters found flames on the steps leading into the building and requested additional resources
concerned the fire may have extended inside
The flames were confined to a void space between the original pre-1933 building and a newer façade
There was minimal damage to the original structure
The vacant rear building where the fire occurred sits behind a single-story used car dealership
No injuries were reported and no residents or businesses were displaced
Firefighters had the blaze under control by 3:39 a.m
The Pasadena Police Department assisted with traffic control during the incident
A 7-Eleven convenience store in East Pasadena was robbed at gunpoint early Friday morning
marking the latest in a series of similar incidents along Rosemead Boulevard in recent weeks
The robbery occurred at approximately 12:50 a.m
at the 7-Eleven located in the 200 block of South Rosemead Blvd
according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department
Del Mar Boulevard with an undisclosed amount of cash
Temple Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the incident
Witnesses observed law enforcement questioning the store clerk and examining the crime scene
This robbery follows multiple armed heists targeting 7-Eleven stores along Rosemead Boulevard in the past two weeks
raising concerns about a potential pattern of criminal activity in the area
Anyone with information about the robbery is urged to contact the Temple Sheriff’s Station at (626) 285-7171 or report information anonymously by contacting “Crime Stoppers” at (800) 222-TIPS (8477) via your smartphone, or by downloading the “P3 Tips” Mobile App on Google Play or the Apple App Store, or by using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org
The third annual Pasadena Neighbor Day takes on heightened significance this year as the community gather to strengthen bonds and support each other and all residents affected by the recent Eaton Fire
scheduled for January 19 at Wild Parrot Brewing Co
is evolving from a casual community celebration into a vibrant platform to support disaster recovery efforts
Several scheduled performers lost their homes in the fire
“Everyone we’ve spoken to from people … we’ve talked to on the street
to you name it — everyone thought it was important to have the event go on… It seems like people need this,” said Russell Mark of The Nextdoors band
who co-organizes the event with Wild Parrot Brewing Company
will feature seven local San Gabriel Valley bands
A community toast is scheduled for 4:45 p.m.
and organizers are considering adding a $5 raffle with proceeds benefiting fire relief efforts
normal charges apply for food and drinks at the venue
The timing has resonated with many Altadenans
“The fact is that Altadena is an incredibly creative community
and almost everyone that we know personally who lost their homes or have been evacuated… are musicians
for those people it can be the hardest because work dries up and you have no place to live,” Mark explained
the local music community has mobilized comprehensive support initiatives for affected artists
Guitar Center’s instrument replacement offers
and studio space offerings from local musicians
The event has expanded its partnerships to include the Pasadena Economic Development Team and Urban Homestead
while maintaining its relationship with primary beneficiaries the Pasadena Educational Foundation and Pasadena Symphony
both now actively involved in fire recovery efforts
The disaster has highlighted the event’s core mission of fostering neighborhood connections
“We’ve lived here for eight years and we’ve known them the whole time
we realized we actually don’t have each other’s phone numbers
we chat in the driveway,” Mark shared
when it began as a free music day aimed at strengthening community bonds
it gained official recognition from Mayor Gordo’s office and has become particularly important for rebuilding connections weakened during the COVID-19 pandemic
“The nice thing is we haven’t had to pivot all that much because everything we were going to do for Neighbor Day still just makes that much more sense now,” Mark noted
emphasizing how the event’s original mission aligns with current community needs
our City Council unanimously approved the Lamanda Park Specific Plan covering part of east Pasadena (roughly between Foothill and Colorado Boulevards on the north and south and Kinneloa and Roosevelt Avenues on the east and west)
Kudos to Councilmember Gene Masuda for bringing attention to a neglected area of his district
The Council’s approval endorsed four of the five recommendations made by the Planning Commission (which I’m a member of until I take my seat on the Council next month)
What was the only proposal the City Council didn’t approve
but vitally important: that the Council set aside $50,000 for a pilot project to actually implement the Specific Plan within the first year
To the average resident $50,000 sounds like a lot of money – and it is
But compared to what the City spends on consultants
$50,000 is a rounding error in the City’s $1 billion annual budget
the City authorized $5.78 million just for consulting contracts for the City’s eight Specific Plans
That means the City Council balked at committing less than 1% of the cost of producing these grand plans to the gritty work of making them come to life
Don’t get me wrong – I believe in planning or I wouldn’t be serving on the Planning Commission
But I believe the purpose of investing millions of dollars into planning is not to make great plans – it’s to make great places
the Council discussed the need to seriously consider public investment — sometime in the future
the staff talked mostly about finding money to fund more studies
It isn’t just money for consultants that the City has poured into these elegant plans
of staff hours – not to mention the time of hundreds of citizens who attended workshops and hearings over the last seven years
the staff and elected officials balk at putting our money where our plans are — relying instead on the hope of “private investment” to jumpstart improvements
Have we forgotten that public investment has been the foundation for private investment in our city’s most successful districts
South Lake has been a durable regional retail destination because of the creation of a remarkable public-private partnership to provide shared parking for the stores
The Playhouse District’s revival was kicked off by another creative public-private partnership that put the historic theater back into operation as the centerpiece of additional public investment
including a public paseo that lured a movie theater as well as the addition of the first park in Downtown in decades
The most dramatic example of successful public investment was the City’s massive commitment to revitalize Old Pasadena
The original three parking structures alone represented $93 million in City investment (in today’s dollars) to create the conditions for private investment to thrive
Dedicating 100% of parking meter revenue to area security
maintenance and improvements has been a permanent source of reinvestment in the area’s continuing vitality
The City also supported the creation of Business Improvement Districts for South Lake
marketing and enhancing business conditions in those districts
Councilmembers are right about the need for private investment
But it’s short-sighted not to see the enormous return on investment when the City invests in struggling parts of our city to make them safer
Public investment not only spurs private investment
it improves livability for surrounding neighborhoods as well
Smart businesspeople don’t fixate on the initial cost of investing – they focus on the expected returns
Pasadena’s public investments in South Lake
Playhouse District and Old Pasadena are a major source of the revenues that support Pasadena’s billion dollar budget
Those districts employ thousands of local residents and generate countless indirect community benefits
Given the titanic changes sweeping the office and retail industries
Pasadena should be thinking beyond our existing economic engines
We need to create expanded business-friendly environments for the economy of the future
and North Lake all have great potential — not to compete with our successful Downtown
but to attract lower-scale neighborhood business services and start-up entrepreneurial ventures
That’s why my Planning Commission colleagues and I unanimously pushed for that $50,000 “pilot” – to test small-scale investments in underinvested parts of our city to fulfill the glowing promises made in the plans we’re adopting
the City will update its $1.2 billion Capital Improvement Program
Let’s see if $50,000 can be found to make the millions spent on plans actually produce results in our lifetimes
I’ll push to plant the seeds for Pasadena’s future prosperity by expanding attractive places to work
it’s worth doing right.” I’d add: if a costly plan is worth adopting
Rick Cole served as Mayor and Councilmember during the revitalization of Old Pasadena and will return to the Council next month
The City announced a partial road closure on East Foothill Boulevard near Sierra Madre Villa Avenue beginning Thursday evening and continuing into early Friday morning
“Please avoid the area,” the City said
Drivers who regularly use this stretch of East Foothill Boulevard during late evening or early morning hours should plan alternative routes to avoid delays
Residents seeking additional information about the road closure can visit the city’s official website at cityofpasadena.net for updates or potential changes to the scheduled work
The City Council unanimously approved a Conditional Use Permit that could allow the Rusnak Auto Group to build a new Porsche dealership facility on Colorado Boulevard in East Pasadena
The vote clears the way for a public hearing at 5:30 p.m
26 and adopts a Resolution of Intention to vacate Nina Street from Sunnyslope Avenue to its Eastern terminus
“As you heard … [this] been a long road getting here
This project has been in the pipeline for three years and during that time we spent considerable time
effort to be responsive to the Commission demands and produce enthusiastic solutions,” said Andrew Arizmendi
A spokesperson for the project claimed it will significantly increase the City’s sales tax revenue from the existing dealership
told Councilmembers “This expansion on the east side will allow the Porsche dealership to double their sales volume in less than a decade
And so of course that correlates with a doubling in sales tax to the city of Pasadena.”
The project would also create additional jobs and a commitment to providing vocational training in partnership with Pasadena City College
The original project submitted in 2021 included the demolition of all existing buildings on the site
the project was later revised to preserve the existing 1929 Swanson and Peterson Building
“The Swanson and Peterson building is envisioned to be some sort of vintage Porsche lounge space.”
A vocational training program with Pasadena City College that will allow hands-on training will also be put in place
“What I really appreciated was when Rusnak said that he was going to keep it
but it was a good decision on his part,” said Councilmember Gene Masuda
“The Rusnak Group made many changes to this design plans after the critiques.”
The District 4 Councilmember made the motion to approve the project
The City’s Planning Commission had mixed recommendations on different aspects of the project
They recommended approval of the street vacation and transfer of ownership
and the minor variance for setback requirements
they recommended denial of the conditional use permit to establish the auto dealership use in a 5-2 vote
and denial of the conditional use permit to allow new construction over 25,000 square feet in a 4-3 vote
Madison said he appreciated the caution of the Planning Commission
“This would be a huge miss if we didn’t approve this project,” Madison said
10 auto dealerships in Pasadena in a very short period of time
I have no doubt every other city in LA County would love to have this dealership located in their city.”
Councilmember Justin Jones recused himself because he owns property within 500 feet of the project
The plans also include a trellis sculpture along Colorado Boulevard designed by students at Art Center College of Design
The project includes a minor variance to deviate from the fixed five-foot setback along Sunnyslope Avenue
The Rusnak Auto Group has a rich history in Pasadena that dates back to 1959
establishing itself as a prominent name in the luxury automobile market in Southern California
It operates multiple dealerships in Pasadena
Motiv Space Systems opened a new facility in East Pasadena on Thursday
bolstering the city’s growing reputation as a deep tech hub
growing from Motiv’s existing headquarters on North Halstead Street
was formerly the site of the longtime popular Robin’s Wood-Fired BBQ restaurant
Motiv’s expansion is an important milestone for Pasadena’s business, which continues to experience a trend of deep tech and science-related companies relocating to Pasadena and expanding existing operations
The City’s Hearing officer will consider a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) that would establish a commercial nursery at 3120 E
The property is owned by Southern California Edison (SCE) and zoned for Open Space (OS)
will feature three modular structures totaling 480 square feet—comprising one office container and two storage containers
This development falls within the CEQA exemption criteria
as the total construction area is below the 10,000-square-foot threshold
located between Lomora Avenue and Canyon Wash Drive
is currently equipped with 12 utility poles and two transmission towers owned by SCE
The project involves minimal modifications
preserving the existing fencing and installing a new driveway gate and fence near Sierra Madre Boulevard
Operating hours for the commercial nursery will be from 7 a.m
The project includes 10 parking spaces—well above the minimum requirement—and ensures compliance with local zoning regulations regarding truck loading and unloading to minimize disturbances to nearby residential areas
The nursery’s outdoor display area will feature plants
The use of fertilizers will be limited to packaged forms only
adhering to performance standards designed to address potential odor issues
This development aligns with the City’s General Plan by enhancing urban open spaces and maintaining the property’s current character
which received approvals from various City departments
is expected to operate harmoniously with the surrounding land uses
The Hearing Officer’s approval of the Conditional Use Permit includes conditions to ensure compliance with zoning codes and minimize impact on neighboring properties

In April 1936, spectators in East Pasadena flocked to see the arrival of the Hale Telescope lens at the local Santa Fe train station. Flashbulbs popped and cameras rolled. One newspaper at the time noted, “Lamanda Park station probably won’t know so much excitement again—even when it masquerades in the movies!”
It’s unknown how many movies the station “masqueraded” in, but ten years later, in May 1946, filmmaker Frank Capra decided to use the same spot in his classic film It’s a Wonderful Life.
Doubling as the fictional Bedford Falls station, the 1886 train depot was a relic of the days when grapevines and orange groves covered the landscape. The surrounding area remained relatively untouched by modernity and was effective in doubling as a sleepy New York town, the setting of the film.
Capra was familiar with the neighborhood, having lived in Sierra Madre from 1915-16, and later Pasadena and Arcadia. As a young man he had attended Throop Institute (today’s Caltech) while working the graveyard shift at the Pasadena Light and Power Plant, and was involved in the Pasadena Community Players. He even tutored Arcadia founder Lucky Baldwin’s grandson to make ends meet.
Always on the lookout for authentic locales, Capra had previously used other nearby locations, including Pasadena’s Busch Gardens (It Happened One Night) and the U.S. Army Balloon School in Arcadia (Dirigible).
It’s a Wonderful Life spans the years 1919 to 1945, and the train station scene takes place in 1932, when protagonist George Bailey’s brother, Harry, returns from college with his wife, causing Bailey to consider his own life choices. To duplicate a slightly earlier time, Capra’s production crew found a vintage 1921 steam engine for the scene rather than the diesel engines that were becoming more popular by the 1940s.
As Michael Willian explains in The Essential It’s a Wonderful Life: A Scene-by-Scene Guide to the Classic Film (2006), “Capra had to keep the shots for this scene fairly tight due to the presence of several palm trees on the depot grounds. Palm trees simply would not do for a scene that is supposed to take place in New York.”
Locals took note of the shoot and flocked to the scene.

Among the few bright spots when disasters hit are the ways in which community members and businesses step up to support those who need it most. The state and county have both set up websites designed to be one-stop shops for victims of the fires that tore through L.A. neighborhoods in January:
LAist is also maintaining this list of places where you can get a shower, shelter, food and more.
Note that this is an evolving list. Needs and supplies will shift and change in the days and weeks ahead. Check social media channels before you head out in case supplies or needs have changed. You could try calling as well, but know that many places will not have the capacity to staff phone lines.
L.A. County residents directly impacted by fires can request property records, business filings, and vital records (like birth and marriage certificates) free of charge to help with recovery efforts.

A gathering of nearly 300 lowrider vehicles caused major traffic disruptions in East Pasadena on Sunday evening
jamming streets for hours and briefly blocking an ambulance on an emergency call
The traffic nightmare centered along Rosemead Boulevard
stretching from Madre Street in the north to Lotus Avenue in the south
The Pasadena Police Department helicopter assisted California Highway Patrol and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies from the Temple City station in clearing the streets
Authorities repeatedly announced via loudspeaker that the gathering had been declared an unlawful assembly and ordered the lowrider drivers to disperse
Sharma reported there were no arrests made
and no injuries as a result of the incident
The streets were reopened after several hours once the lowrider vehicles dispersed from the area
two days after a magnitude 3.4 temblor hit nearby
with an epicenter about a block north of El Sereno Elementary School
in the Los Angeles neighborhood of El Sereno
That’s two miles southwest of downtown South Pasadena and two miles northwest of Cal State L.A
The earthquake’s epicenter is less than two miles south of the Raymond fault
Monrovia and the unincorporated area of East Pasadena
the fault runs alongside parts of Eagle Rock
York and Huntington boulevards and under a stretch of the 110 Freeway in South Pasadena
The Raymond fault caused the magnitude 4.9 Pasadena earthquake in 1988, one that literally threw seismologist Lucy Jones out of bed
California
Sunday’s magnitude 3.4 earthquake, also in El Sereno, was centered three-fifths of a mile to the south of Tuesday’s quake. Its epicenter was two blocks south of the intersection of Huntington Drive and Eastern Avenue.
Lifestyle
Earthquakes are a way of life if you live in Los Angeles. But what about when you never feel them — even as your Shake Alert is blaring and your friends are buzzing about the temblor?
Weak shaking from Sunday’s quake may have been felt more broadly, including in downtown L.A., Burbank, Pasadena, El Monte, Montebello, Pico Rivera, Downey, Lynwood and South L.A.
Seismologists have looked with concern at the Raymond fault. It’s possible it could rupture nearly simultaneously with a couple of faults to the west — the Hollywood and Santa Monica faults.
The Hollywood fault runs through some of the most densely populated parts of Los Angeles
Evidence for the Raymond fault has been clear to geologists for decades
A lake that once sat at what is now Lacy Park in San Marino was created by the fault
the result of land sinking from past earthquakes
Those historic quakes also created the hills that are now part of the Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden in Arcadia, as well as those that give the commanding views at the Huntington Library, home to an estate
art collection and gardens established by railway magnate Henry Huntington
Compared with the fastest-moving faults in the state
the Raymond moves slowly — at about one-tenth the speed of the infamous San Andreas fault
That means the Raymond doesn’t rupture as often as the San Andreas
Scientists suspect the last time the Raymond fault produced an earthquake of magnitude 6 or above was 1,000 to 2,000 years ago
They believe such events happen every few thousand years
But earthquakes don’t happen like clockwork
and scientists cannot say for certain when the Raymond fault will rupture next
An average of five earthquakes with magnitudes between 3.0 and 4.0 occur per year in the Greater Los Angeles area
according to a recent three-year data sample

World & Nation
The victims, whose ages range from 17 to 22, all had roots in the City of Roses.
A memorial of flowers and candles assembled near a ruined building in east Pasadena marked the spot where the car’s driver crashed his Tesla after hitting a nearby curb at more than 100 mph just before 2:30 a.m. Saturday.
The driver and two passengers died in the crash, and three more passengers were hospitalized with serious injuries, according to authorities.
By Monday morning, the memorial outside the unoccupied building on East Foothill Boulevard was replete with votive candles, a soccer ball and shoe, flowers and a pair of leather notebooks in which friends and family members could leave messages.
“I know he’s in a better place now and he’s looking down on us,” Nava said, placing the flowers.
Two people in the Tesla were able to get out of the vehicle after it flew off the freeway overpass
Pfeiffer, 20, was from Pasadena, according to the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office. The two other people killed were a man in his 20s whom KABC7 identified as Esrom Fessemaye and Moheb Reda Samuel, 22, of Pasadena. The medical examiner’s office previously provided an incorrect spelling for Samuel’s first name.
Samuel was the driver of the white, five-seat Tesla Model 3 that was heading west on Foothill Boulevard when it appeared to have lost control navigating a bend in the road. It hit a curb and launched into the air, according to Lt. Anthony Russo with the Pasadena Police Department.
The car probably soared more than 130 feet before it struck a utility pole and the building, Russo said.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but based on preliminary information, it does not appear that the vehicle malfunctioned, according to Russo. The county medical examiner’s office will perform a toxicology test to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

Schaben/Los Angeles Times) Samuel and the passenger in the front seat, who police believe was Fessemaye, died at the scene, while three of the four rear passengers were thrown from the vehicle during the crash, Russo said. The fourth passenger remained in the vehicle because they were wearing their seat belt.
One of the passengers thrown from the vehicle, who police believe was Pfeiffer, died, and two others were transported to a hospital along with the survivor who remained in the vehicle’s back seat, Russo said. All three passengers — identified by police as Emerson Newquist, 20, of Pasadena and Bella Ramirez, 18, of Monrovia, and by KTLA as Samuel’s 17-year-old sister, Emily — are expected to survive, according to authorities.
Samuel was charged in September with driving under the influence with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit, according to court records. He appeared in a Pasadena courtroom in March for his arraignment and a plea hearing.
Business
Tesla has settled a lawsuit brought by the family of a Silicon Valley engineer who died in a crash while relying on the company’s semi-autonomous driving software
The school asked the public to respect the privacy of the families whose loved ones were involved in the crash.
“We are deeply saddened by this weekend’s tragic car accident that claimed precious young lives. We mourn this immense loss and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of all those affected,” the statement said. “During this difficult time, we turn to our faith in Christ Jesus for comfort and strength and ask others to join us in praying for all who are suffering due to this tragedy.”
On Monday morning, a student wearing a Maranatha sweater approached the memorial and left flowers. Pieces of the Tesla remained strewn about the street and sidewalk.
A large gash in the sidewalk spoke of where the vehicle went airborne, and another large scratch on the ground at a nearby corner showed where the Tesla eventually came to rest.
Among the items at the memorial was a skateboard propped on the handles of the ruined building’s door with the name “Mike” scratched onto the board’s deck.
joked that the valet at the hotel probably didn’t expect the truck to have so much power
“He was a humble guy and he didn’t like to show off
He was just very sweet to his grandfather and grandmother,” Nava said
Pfeiffer had taken care of his grandfather until his grandfather’s death
and was living with his grandmother at the time of the accident
Nava said his friend was a skateboarder who studied kinesiology at Pasadena City College
but remained undecided about what to study next
“I guess we’ll never know,” Nava said as he picked up one of the notebooks to write a message for his friend
A GoFundMe campaign has been started to help pay for Pfeiffer’s funeral services.

A corner site in unincorporated East Pasadena is up for redevelopment with a mixed-use apartment complex
per a notification issued last month by the Los Angeles County
the Director of the Department of Regional Planning issued approved an administrative housing permit for a roughly 1.1-acre site located at 380 S
which is currently improved with a church and a series of small commercial buildings
is now slated for the construction of a new seven-story edifice featuring 193 studio
and two-bedroom apartments above 7,828 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and a 205-car semi-subterranean parking garage
Ferrier Architecture Studio is designing the project
which is depicted in plans as a contemporary podium-type building with a linear pool deck cutting through the center
Images also show a series of elevated amenity decks
as well as a diagonal swath cut from the roofline to adhere to setback requirements along the eastern property lien
County records list the project's developer as Pasadena-based Legendary Developments
The proposed project is a beneficiary of L.A. County's Mixed Use zoning, which has been implemented in East Pasadena, and a handful of other unincorporated communities. The first development to make use of the zoning rules, featuring 100 apartments and ground-floor retail space
was recently built a few blocks north on Colorado Boulevard
A commercial building on Colorado Boulevard dating to the late 1930s could make way for new housing, according to a presentation to the Pasadena Design Commission
The project from applicant Legacy Lofts, LLC (an affiliate of Torkian Construction)
calls for redeveloping a two-story structure currently occupied by Michael's Arts and Crafts Store
Plans call for the new construction of a six-story
approximately 127,000-square-foot building featuring 148 studio
and three-bedroom dwellings above 5,334 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and a semi-subterranean parking garage
Reed Architectural Group is designing the project
according to plans included with the presentation
The project presentation is for a conceptual design review
and consideration of the concept will continue at a later date
Torkian has also been linked to a smaller multifamily residential development near Memorial Park in Pasadena

Print The 22-year-old behind the wheel of a speeding Tesla that crashed into a building in Pasadena
claiming the lives of three people Saturday
The Pasadena Police Department released more information Tuesday about the violent wreck of a speeding Tesla that left three dead and three others injured early Saturday — and narrowly avoided more casualties
2024This story was updated to remove a statement that Moheb Samuel graduated from Maranatha High School in 2020
The Times cannot confirm Samuel’s graduation date
Moheb Samuel was driving over 100 mph on East Foothill Boulevard shortly after 2:30 a.m
Saturday when he narrowly missed crashing into a car driving north at the intersection of Foothill and Sierra Madre Boulevard
crashed through a streetlight and became airborne after striking a curb on the north side of the road
The Tesla traveled about 130 feet through the air before smashing into a power pole and the building
one was ejected from the back seat; three other passengers were seriously injured
Samuel was cited in September by the California Highway Patrol for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol
He was due in court in March but failed to appear
resulting in a warrant issued for his arrest
His driver’s license was suspended when he was driving the Tesla on Saturday
according to city of Pasadena spokesperson Lisa Derderian
Friends called him Mo, according to people who visited the memorial at the crash site. Among the memorial’s flowers and votive candles, friends also left behind a soccer ball.
Authorities estimate the Tesla Model 3 was traveling over 100 mph when it hit a curb and launched into the air before crashing into a building
He was one of the three passengers thrown from the back seat of the car during the crash
He was just very sweet to his grandfather and grandmother,” Pfeiffer’s friend
said at the crash site Monday as his voice broke
The passenger in the Tesla’s front seat also died at the scene. Police have identified him only as a 22-year-old man, pending the notification of his family. Family members told news station KTLA-TV that the man is Esrom Fessemaye
and that he worked with Samuel at a gas station
two other passengers in the back seat of the Tesla were thrown from the vehicle during the crash
were taken to a local hospital in stable condition
The third survivor is an 17-year-old girl whose name has not been released by police; she was taken to a hospital and remained in critical condition as of Tuesday
KTLA identified the girl as Samuel’s sister
Newquist’s family said in a GoFundMe post that two of the men who died in the crash were his roommates.
“He is expected to make a full recovery though the process will be long and painful, both physically and emotionally,” the post said.
The suspect, identified by police as Ricardo Guade Andrade of San Fernando, crashed into the frontyard of a nearby home as he fled from police in Pasadena.
A toxicology exam will be done to determine if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash, Pasadena Police Lt. Anthony Russo said.
Samuel appeared to have lost control of the vehicle at a bend in the road when he struck the curb. At this stage in the investigation, it does not appear there was any malfunction of the 2018 Tesla Model 3, Russo said.
The Tesla crashed into a power pole, sending power lines down into the street. Power was out in a section of Pasadena on Saturday morning.
A steady stream of friends, family members and local residents have visited the memorial in the industrial section of Pasadena. Some prayed and others left flowers or messages in a pair of leather notebooks on the sidewalk. A skateboard that read “Mike” was propped against the door of the ruined building in tribute to Pfeiffer, one of numerous mementos placed to honor the victims.

when it struck a curb on near a slight curve on Foothill Boulevard
according to officials and video footage of the incident
Friends of the victims have been gathering daily at a makeshift memorial near the crash site in the 2300 block of Foothill Boulevard at Vista Avenue to mourn and draw comfort from one another

In the unincorporated community of East Pasadena, developer APPA Real Estate is wrapping up work on the RinRose
Located at 3768 E. Colorado Boulevard
the project was built by a joint venture between West Hollywood-based APPA and its partners Sundance Bay and Geolo Capital
features 100 apartments - including five deed-restricted affordable units - atop 4,500 square feet of ground-floor retail space and two levels of subterranean parking
KFA Architecture is designing the RinRose
which is composed of four floors of wood-frame construction above a concrete podium
The building incorporates sloping rooflines
intended to reference the pitched roofs of houses in the surrounding residential neighborhood
APPA acquired the development site in 2019 for $8.5 million
which was already entitled by Bolour Associates
A $32-million construction loan for the project was secured in 2020
The RinRose is among the first new developments built in Los Angeles County using its updated mixed-use zoning standards, but is not likely to be the last. A few blocks south on Rosemead Boulevard, a similar project with 193 apartments and retail space is also in the works
The development site also sits roughly one mile east of Metro's Sierra Madre Villa Station, where Trammell Crow subsidiary High Street Residential has secured entitlements for an even larger 550-unit housing and retail complex

PETA activists protested outside a Whole Foods Market at 3751 E
urging the store to stop selling coconut milk from Thailand
[Photos courtesy of PETA]People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) activists protested outside a Whole Foods Market at 3751 E
The group says monkeys are forced to spend long hours climbing trees and picking coconuts used to produce the product
The monkeys are denied the freedom to move around
or do anything else that’s natural and important to them
“Whole Foods knows full well of the rampant abuse in the Thai coconut industry,” said Amber Canavan
“These monkeys are illegally snatched from their natural habitats and subjected to a lifetime of activity and suffering
and forced to spend long hours picking these heavy coconuts.”
PETA has been investigating the Thai coconut industry for several years and reports it has found that the use of monkey labor is widespread
PETA Asia released a video investigation that showed monkeys being chained to trees
and shocked with electric batons in order to force them to pick coconuts
It was not immediately known if Whole Foods has responded to PETA’s requests to stop selling coconut milk from Thailand
and Costco have reportedly already stopped selling coconut milk from certain Thai suppliers due to allegations of forced monkey labor
“Whole Foods needs to follow suit [of other grocery store chains] and stop selling brands that are connected to monkey labor,” Canavan said
“Customers specifically go to Whole Foods expecting the brand to have higher standards.”
PETA is urging Whole Foods customers to contact the company and demand that it stop selling coconut milk from Thailand

Authorities were searching homes in the area as they investigated the incident on Grayburn Road that was reported just before 3:30 p.m.
It started with a call for a burglary at another house in the neighborhood, where a woman was home. The suspect fled that house and then broke into another home in the area, investigators say.
In that second house, the male homeowner and his two children were home at the time. Officials say the homeowner warned the burglar he had a gun and when the suspect did not flee, the homeowner shot him.
When deputies got to the home, they found a suspect on the floor with a gunshot wound to the upper body. Fire department paramedics transported the suspect to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the upper body.
The public was asked to avoid the area of Rosemead Boulevard, north of Huntington Drive and south of Del Mar Avenue.
Deputies said the homeowner legally owns the gun.

The Design Commission on Tuesday continued its discussion of the proposal to build a hotel complex on the north side of Colorado Blvd
and mixed-use project in the same block on the south
The large project is comprised of an 8-story
335,560 square foot hotel located at 1347-1365 E
40,916 square foot mixed-use project of commercial space and 49 residential units at 1336-1350 E
the Commission unanimously decided to conduct further review of the project after some commissioners remarked that the proposed project did not meet the basic requirements of concept design
“This project should be aiming at [excellence]
I’m not sure we are [there] yet,” Commissioner Philip Chiao said during the virtual meeting of the commission as he expressed concerns regarding the buildings’ height
“The scale and the play of the building elements … does not have [the] elegance expected,” Chiao said
further adding that the building is “not a good looking building.”
which is near Pasadena City Colleged’s main campus
is under the Concept Review design phase of the commission’s approval process
earlier tweaked its original plan after Commissioners
advised it to further study its design to ensure it would conform to the Federalist and Art Deco style which is seen on buildings in Pasadena City College
Design Commission Chair Commissioner Srinivas Rao said the applicant must go back a few steps and further revise the design
as he pointed out that the overall massing and approach to the volumetric composition of the building should lend itself to the style that the architect is aiming for
it is very unconvincing — the way it is organized,” Rao said
I am not convinced like all of you that from here on
we can provide input where the design can evolve into a final design,” he added
All commissioners present voted in the affirmative on the motion of Commissioner Timothy Sales to give the applicant discretion to reach out to a sub-committee before it faces the commission again for the third time
the Commission also conducted an advisory review of the draft design of the East Pasadena Specific Plan as part of the Round 3 of the community engagement process for the project
Under the city’s “Our Pasadena” General Plan Implementation Program
the Department of Planning and Community Development is required to update the eight specific plan areas in Pasadena
The East Pasadena Specific Plan focuses on expansion of existing businesses and development of new businesses to provide employment opportunities for its residents
The Commission’s feedback was sought before the proponents prepare a draft plan for review by the Planning Commission which is anticipated next year
Martin Potter of the Planning Committee presented before the Commission the overview of the East Pasadena Specific Plan which was the same presentation presented before the community through the virtual open house which can be viewed at www.OurPasadena.org
“I do think the plan is a good one and if we look at the history of East Pasadena
it has changed overtime and will continue to change,” Sales said
“I applaud the work… There is always a push-pull between the city and private sector’s interests but I think the best interest always is to collaborate and find the common solution so I hope that the Planning Commission would take to heart the very detailed comments that we received,” he added
The Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) is one step closer to building a new home in the unincorporated community of Willowbrook
On Wednesday, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to adopt the findings of a mitigated negative declaration compiled for CDU's "New Health Professional Education Building," which would house the school's existing College of Medicine programs and a new four-year medical degree program
Plans call for the construction of a roughly 46,000-square-foot area at the southwestern corner of the university campus at 1731 E
Two existing modular buildings would be razed to make way for the new 92,000-square-foot structure featuring classrooms
Construction of the new building is expected to occur over a roughly two-year period
commencing as early as 2023 and opening for students by 2025
Roughly 30 miles north in East Pasadena, a different type of project also secured a key sign-off. The Board of Supervisors voted to uphold the approval of a proposed mixed-use apartment complex at 380 S. Rosemead Boulevard
rejecting an appeal from the labor union-affiliated Supporters Alliance for Environmental Responsibility (SAFER)
LLC is planning a new seven-story building for the 1.1-acre site
currently improved with a church and a series of small commercial buildings
According to a staff report, 13 of the proposed apartments are to be set aside for rent by extremely low-income households at completion
The inclusion of affordable housing made the project eligible for density bonus incentives permitting increased height and floor area
SAFER's appeal argued that the project should be subject to a full environmental impact report
and contends that the County Department of Regional Planning improperly granted administrative approval to the proposed development
rather than subjecting it to discretionary review
A vacant building that was once home to a Conrad's restaurant in Pasadena is poised for redevelopment, according to a new presentation to the city's Design Commission
The project site, a corner lot at 861 E. Walnut Street, sits a short distance south of the 210 Freeway and the A Line's Lake Station. City records indicate that the Dallas, Texas-based entity HSB Pasadena, LLC is seeking approvals for a new senior housing complex on the site. The entity is based out of the same address of South Bay Partners
Plans call for the construction of a new six-story
approximately 83,100-square-foot building containing 95 units of assisted living and memory care housing
Other project elements would include a lobby
VTBS Architects is designing the contemporary low-rise structure
which is named Walnut and Lake for its cross-streets
"The building above the ground floor maintains breaks and areas of modulation throughout that have been reviewed for compliance with the updated Central District Specific Plan standards," reads a staff report
The building is designed in a generally contemporary style with flat roofs
The project site sits along a stretch of Walnut Street which has recently seen the construction of several residential buildings catering to a non-senior population from Greystar and Prominent Development
Other Los Angeles-area projects from South Bay Partners include a recently-completed senior housing complex in Warner Center and a proposed, but unbuilt development near Century City
The developers of a mixed-use project at 3452-3488 E
which includes the existing Gateway Metro Center and Panda Inn building
have applied for major changes to the previously-approved Concept Design
Instead of the original 232-unit residential project and the exterior remodeling of the Metro Center and Panda Inn
the plan now calls for a mixed-use project with 5,350 square feet of commercial space and 234 residential units
with the exterior remodeling no longer included
Plans submitted to the Department of Planning and Community Development showed the project involves construction of a five-story above-ground parking structure
with 5,350 square feet of ground-floor commercial space
and three six-story buildings with 234 residential units on the existing surface parking lot behind Panda Inn
One protected mature tree and 67 non-protected trees are proposed to be removed to accommodate the project
In addition to the proposed five-level parking structure
parking for the existing office building would be provided off-site
The project site consists of three adjoining lots of a total size of 4.3 acres on the south side of E
the site is currently developed with the 11-story Gateway Metro Center
and surface parking lots between and behind these two buildings
The southern edge of the site adjoins the 210 Freeway
The developers have proposed a number of changes to the Concept Design Review which the Design Commission approved on August 28
a previously proposed surface parking area west of Panda Inn will be changed to an open space or courtyard area with a valet or drop-off zone adjacent to the driveway
The footprint of the proposed north building will be slightly modified to accommodate the new uses proposed
The south building’s footprint will also be changed to separate the previous single-building and above ground parking structure into three buildings that would surround a larger rectangular courtyard space than previously proposed
A proposed “town center” space at roughly the center of the site will no longer be pursued
The Design Commission will look at these and other proposed changes to the plans on Tuesday, April 13. The virtual meeting begins at 4:30 p.m. and may be accessed by the public through https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88375059806 or by calling (669) 900-6833 and using the webinar ID 883 7505 9806

The facility in East Pasadena at 465 N Halstead St
was closed June 11 along with 99 other locations across the United States

or how many people were members of the East Pasadena location
“The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the 24 Hour Fitness strategy to transform our business,” company officials said in a statement
the pace by which we have had to make difficult decisions has been accelerated as well
In order to meet the changing needs of our club members

Will current members be allowed to transfer their memberships to another Fitness gym
We haven’t heard anything from the company during the time we were paying our dues but not allowed to use the facility
A pair of 1930s buildings which house a mechanic shop near the SR-210 Freeway is up for redevelopment with housing, according to an item scheduled for review at the October 10 meeting of the Pasadena Design Commission
would rise from a site located just under one mile west of the A Line's Sierra Madre Villa Station
Plans call for the construction of a new three- and four-story buildings featuring 21 one- and two-bedroom dwellings above 5,329 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and parking for 56 vehicles
Requested approvals include density bonus incentives to permit greater height and reductions to setbacks normally required by zoning. In exchange, two of the apartments would be set aside for occupancy by very low-income households
Tyler + Kelly Architecture is designing the project
which is named 'The Pamplona," in architectural plans included with the presentation
"The proposed building is designed in a contemporary interpretation of a traditional Spanish Colonial Revival style with pitched and flat roofs, repeating projecting and recessed building volumes, stacked punched openings and projecting sunshades," reads a staff report
but rich material palette consisting of stucco that will be detailed with wood trellises protecting windows
clay tile roofs and an ornamental statue at the southeast corner of the roof parapet."
The Pamplona is being presented to the Design Commission for a preliminary consultation
and a vote on the project is not scheduled for October 10
The proposed development would rise a half-mile west of a large industrial-zoned site at 3200 E. Foothill Boulevard, where Pasadena city officials have previously approved the construction of a 550-unit mixed-use apartment complex from Trammell Crow Company subsidiary High Street Residential
Police gather near one of many crime scenes from an incident in which an armed suspect was killed by officers near Gwinn Park in East Pasadena on Tuesday
[Photo by Eddie Rivera/Pasadena Now]The death of a man killed during a police encounter late last month has been ruled a homicide according to information on the LA County Coroner’s website
of Inglewood fatally shot Pasadena resident Gevork Minissian
Police were originally unsure if Hall died of wounds suffered during his encounter by police or if he committed suicide
The coroner’s homicide ruling as the cause of death does not mean a crime occurred
a homicide means the death occurred at the hands of another person
The coroner can only rule deaths as a homicide
Hall died of multiple gunshot wounds according to information obtained by Pasadena Now on Thursday morning
“Detectives are still actively investigating this tragic incident in an attempt to find answers as to why this occurred and determine what the connection is between Mr
Grisafe said it is possible that there may not be a connection between the two men other than the fatal encounter
after Hall shot Minissian he tried to flee by attempting to carjack a woman
Hall exchanged gunfire with police before running to Sunnyslope Avenue
where he allegedly tried to steal a second car
and held the vehicle’s owner at gunpoint in the area of East Villa Street and North Sunnyslope Avenue
The suspect died in a driveway in the 500 block of North Sunnyslope Avenue at 2:46 p.m.
according to Coroner’s spokeswoman Sarah Ardalani
Police Chief John Perez said Hall exchanged fire with police and was struck at least once
It is not known if the suspect was fleeing when the fatal shots were fired
AB 392 allows police to shoot a fleeing suspect if the officer reasonably believes that the person will cause death or serious bodily injury to another unless immediately apprehended
shot at police and taken another person hostage—all of which could represent an immediate threat to the community
The two women Hall allegedly attempted to carjack were evaluated and treated at the scene for unknown injuries
The day after the shooting Pasadena native Paola Lomeli told Pasadena Now she was in Sunnyslope Park when the shots broke out
when I heard the first round of gunshots,” she said
“About 10 seconds later the next round went off
Within a minute I heard police approaching the area
Instantly police closed down the area and rerouted traffic.”
Anyone with information on the shooting was asked to call the Pasadena Police Department at 626-744-4241
