An East Point officer pulled over a gray Nissan Sentra after they saw it run a red light at the intersection of Washington Road and Camp Creek Parkway. Police said they smelled marijuana, and the driver, a woman who hasn’t been identified, admitted she had smoked the substance inside the car.
While searching the car, officers found several items, including:
The woman now faces six drug charges, one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and one count of obstruction of a law enforcement officer.
“These are serious offenses, and they highlight the importance of proactive policing and traffic enforcement in identifying and intercepting criminal activity,” the police department said in a statement.

Equinor-owned East Point Energy has officially withdrawn plans to construct a 116MW standalone BESS in New York State after officials at the Town of Carmel indefinitely banned the development of new utility-scale battery storage facilities
an East Point Energy-representative confirmed to Energy-Storage.news that its Union Energy Center had recently been “removed from consideration for local approvals” in response to the BESS moratorium
East Point Energy first considered its Union Energy Center at the beginning of 2020
when a representative for the developer reached out to the Town of Carmel’s Building Inspector Michael Carnazza
enquiring about the town’s stance on utility-scale storage
Carnazza confirmed that although grid-scale battery storage was permitted in the town
the developer would require approval from the Planning Board
Prior to submitting its application with the Planning Board
East Point Energy filed an interconnection request with the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) for the project during May 2021
The request was submitted under East Point Energy’s Union Energy Center
LLC subsidiary for 116MW of energy storage connecting to the grid via New York State Electric & Gas’ (NYSEG’s) Union Valley – Croton Falls 115kV transmission line
details of East Point’s Union Energy Center already existed in the public domain
the majority of local residents first learnt of its existence during August 2023
when the developer submitted an application for the project with the Town of Carmel’s Planning Board
the project would utilise lithium-ion technology encompassing approximately 93 acres of land within the Town of Carmel’s unincorporated hamlet of Mahopac in Putnam County
As part of its application with the Town of Carmel
East Point included a full Environmental Assessment Form (EAF) along with a fire assessment
East Point said it proposed the project to help the State of New York reach its target of deploying 6GW of BESS by 2030
as set by State Governor Kathy Hochul in 2022
in an update to New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) legislation enacted by predecessor Andrew Cuomo
In related news, the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) recently approved a scheme to support the development of new BESS facilities across the state – dubbed the Bulk Energy Storage Program Implementation Plan
NYSERDA, the scheme’s proponent, is the sponsor of an Energy-Storage.news webinar on the topic taking place tomorrow, Thursday 3 April at 2pm EST
The webinar is the first in a two-part series
NYSERDA CEO Doreen Harris and VP for large-scale renewables Georges Sassine will discuss New York’s energy storage landscape and the integral role of storage in the state’s clean energy transition
As first reported by ESN Premium last year
the Carmel Town Board initiated plans to temporarily ban the approval of new BESS facilities whilst it considered changes to its zoning laws
Following an initial discussion in May 2024
the Board passed a six-month moratorium on considering and approving new storage facilities due to the ‘significant safety concerns’ surrounding BESS
the Board made reference to other ‘fire incidents at facilities across the state.’
During the third quarter of 2023, fires occurred at two different BESS facilities within New York State
which drew widespread media attention and public scrutiny
The temporary moratorium drew support from a handful of influential individuals
including New York State Senator for District 40 Pete Harckham
The Senator reached out to Carmel Supervisor Carnazza
applauding the town’s efforts in pausing energy storage deployment
Harkham described the proposed site for Union Energy Center as “particularly sensitive” due to its close proximity to residential homes
As the expiration date of the temporary moratorium approached and instead of considering an extension
town officials chose to take definitive action through the passing of an indefinite moratorium
the Board voted unanimously to prohibit the approval of any new BESS facilities exceeding 600kWh
effectively banning utility-scale storage in the town
According to a website dedicated to the project (which has since been taken offline)
East Point Energy said it was “assessing the moratorium approved by the Town of Carmel town board to determine the next steps for the Union Energy Center project.”
East Point withdrew its NYISO interconnection request for Union Energy Center
in an email addressed to Carmel’s Planning Board
said the developer was formally removing the project from local consideration
After reaching out for comment on the moratorium and subsequent project withdrawal
“Energy storage is critical to the future reliability of New York’s electrical grid; demand continues to grow at a time when antiquated energy generation is being phased out
Although we had a presence in the community while developing the Union Energy Center
our experience underscores the importance of continual stakeholder engagement
The success of BESS projects can only be achieved through open dialogue with communities and demonstrating the benefits these systems offer to New Yorkers.”
East Point Energy currently has six standalone BESS projects with a cumulative capacity of 190MW/380MWh under construction
made up of two projects in Texas and four in Virginia
East Point Energy is developing the four Virginia projects
alongside Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC)
Norwegian state-owned energy company Equinor acquired East Point Energy as a wholly-owned subsidiary in 2022
Equinor said at the time that it would invest in the developer to enable it to become an owner of projects as well as developing them to sell on

(Atlanta News First) - The City of East Point has reached a $2.1 million dollar settlement in the death of a 23-year-old woman who died of an untreated drug overdose while she was in custody
attorneys for the woman’s family said Wednesday
Olivia Hannah died at the city jail on April 9
after she was arrested for alleged shoplifting
according to attorneys with law firm Spears & Filipovits
the attorneys filed a lawsuit against the City of East Point
two officers at the jail and an East Point police officer on behalf of Hannah’s family
claiming the defendants could have prevented her death
“People who are arrested deserve to be treated humanely,” attorney Jeff Filipovits said
Attorneys said Hannah struggled with drug addiction
she allegedly wasn’t checked thoroughly and had fentanyl hidden in her clothing
The lawsuit claims she was placed in solitary confinement “due to concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic” and denied requests to take a shower
As Hannah was experiencing symptoms of drug withdrawal
she swallowed the fentanyl as a cry for help after she was reportedly denied requests for medical attention and menstrual health products
The lawsuit claims jail guards knew she had taken the drugs
or administer the overdose-reversal drug Narcan
“Although jailers knew that Hannah had recently used drugs and was beginning to have withdrawal symptoms
they ignored a nurse’s recommendation that she be transferred to another facility better equipped to deal with her withdrawal,” attorneys claim
They said Hannah’s death “has exposed alarming systemic failures” in the city jail’s operations
The attorneys claim that intoxicated arrestees are not unusual at the East Point jail
“which houses people charged with misdemeanors and often serves as the place where police from surrounding cities in Fulton County leave people who are intoxicated to sober up.”
the attorneys claim another person held at the jail died of an overdose “despite being intoxicated to the point he was unable to walk into the jail.” They claim the city did not conduct an investigation
or provide training to its jailers in recognizing and avoiding overdose deaths after the incident
“It exposes the city to a tremendous amount of liability
If this is how they’re going to run this jail
And it’s just a matter of time until this happens to someone else.” Filipovits said
and that’s why the city council and city leadership needs to do something to fix this.”
“Olivia was a loving daughter with her whole life ahead of her,” Melinda Pitts
said in a statement released by Spears & Filipovits
but she didn’t deserve to die alone and in pain
The officers’ failure to act robbed us of the chance to help her overcome her addiction and build the future she dreamed of
No family should have to endure this kind of loss
we can prevent other families from experiencing the same heartbreak.”
East Point Mayor Deana Holiday Ingraham and East Point Police Chief Shawn Buchanan released the following joint statement to Atlanta News First:
“The unfortunate death of Olivia Hannah has been a matter of priority for the City of East Point since the incident
Hannah’s concealment of drugs was a consequence of her own addiction
changes in the Police Department leadership in December 2021 has resulted in revisions to policies regarding the intake of inmates under the influence of drugs or alcohol which requires arrestees to be seen at Grady Hospital before being admitted to the jail
the City jail has been upgraded with a monitoring system
New leadership has also contributed to improvements at the jail
a renewed commitment to officer training and revised policies that are reflective of the City’s commitment to inmate safety
The City takes these types of matters very seriously and joins the growing community of advocates to end the national opioid crisis in our communities
A planned factory redevelopment that could have major economic implications for ITP cities near Atlanta’s airport is starting to rumble to life
City of East Point officials recently announced they’ve partnered with McDonald Development Co
to transform a long-shuttered glass bottle manufacturing facility at 3107 Sylvan Road into a variety of uses
formerly home to Owens-Illinois Inc., includes 800,000 square feet of empty industrial space today
existing structures are in unsafe condition and will have to be cleared before development can move forward
though some features of the site will be retained
Owens-Illinois, the world’s largest glass container manufacturer and a partner for many top food and beverage brands, closed its Atlanta plant in 2018
The location today counts “exceptional accessibility” being adjacent to Interstate 85 and within a few minutes of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport—selling points for a potential development with regional impact
with Hapeville’s city limits across the street
The potential redevelopment is just entering conceptual phases now
but East Point’s vision generally calls for a lively mixed-use hub with an emphasis on technology and creative industry uses
Other aspects could include a mix of housing options for both long and short-term stays
and a communal public area that would function as “a destination for entertainment
attracting both local and regional visitors,” per East Point’s announcement
McDonald’s development team plans to work with officials in both East Point and Hapeville while hosting public meetings to gather community input that will help shape the site’s future
McDonald, which is based in Atlanta with offices dotted around the Southeast, has developed more than 50 million square feet of real estate. Around Atlanta, the bulk of that has been office parks and shipping facilities, according to the company’s portfolio
city officials say demolition plans will be put forward soon to take down hazardous structures at the factory site while keeping “key historical elements” intact
Plans then call for refining the redevelopment vision over the next eight to 12 months
March 3: McDonald and urban developer Mikey Cosentino have partnered to form Quark Properties
which owns and will develop the East Point property

EAST POINT, Ga. — East Point Police Chief Shawn Buchanan expressed gratitude that his officers are alive after a semitruck crashed into three cruisers, injuring two officers, WXIA reports
Three cruisers from the East Point Police Department were parked “first lane from the concrete median wall while responding to an incident with their emergency lights activated” when the semitruck was “traveling too fast for roadway conditions and failed to move over for emergency vehicles before striking all three patrol vehicles and the concrete median wall,” according to the Georgia Highway State Patrol
At the time of the crash, one officer was still in his patrol vehicle and another officer was attempting to flee on foot but “fell and was ran over by his own vehicle,” the police department said
“The impact of the 18-wheeler striking the patrol vehicles caused an officer to be trapped underneath the vehicle,” Buchanan told WXIA said
The third officer on the scene was able to escape serious injuries by running into oncoming traffic
it’s by the grace of God that they’re alive,” Buchanan told WXIA
The two officers were transported to the hospital for further evaluation of non-life-threatening injuries
The semitruck driver faces charges for driving too fast for conditions
violating the move-over law and improper lane usage on multi-lane highways restricted for trucks
The crash occurred during Crash Responder Safety Week
which emphasizes the importance of slowing down
moving over and ensuring the safety of first responders working in dangerous roadside conditions
