Downie lived in Riverdale for several years towards the end of his life
BY Ben OkazawaPublished May 15
Toronto's famous Riverdale Park East could be redubbed in honour of the late, great Gord Downie soon
as city council is reviewing a petition to change the park's name
Since he also lived in the Riverdale neighbourhood for several years as a beloved member of the community
it would make perfect sense to honour him locally
Lake Fever Wilderness Company founder Damian Jakibchuk — whose company name derives from the Hip song "Lake Fever" — started the push to rename Riverdale Park after Downie with support from local businesses
"When Gord died, I'd begun thinking about ways my company could do more," Jakibchuk told blogTO
I thought that we could combine our affinity for the outdoors with Gord's environmental activism to rename an outdoor space after him
somewhere accessible where citizens and visitors could reflect on the impact he's had on Canada."

A new development is being considered for a wooded lot next to the upcoming Purple Line station just outside Riverdale Park
Located behind the Megamart off East West Highway and Kenilworth Avenue, the Headen Spring development would include 290 apartments
3,200 square feet of retail and 526 parking spaces
It’s being proposed by a partnership with Refreshing Spring Church of God in Christ and a related non-profit community development corporation Sowing Empowerment & Economic Development
An outline of the project states that there would be four apartment buildings
with one dedicated for seniors and another with ground-floor retail
The community building would include a gym
child care center and community outreach space
The development would also include 20 three-bedroom row homes
Since some of the apartments would be affordable housing, the project has gotten loans from a Kaiser Permanente fund and another set up by Amazon
With nearly 10 acres, the site is one of the largest tracts of undeveloped land next to the Purple Line in the area. Major construction is set to begin again on the 16-mile transit line in August and be completed in late 2026
It’s too bad the Riverdale Plaza strip mall isn’t getting more attention
The link is to an expression of interest from 2020 and deadline in Feb 2021
the NHP Foundation is the development partner
There was a presentation at the Riverdale Park Town Council meeting on 7/11/22 and the video should be up on the Town’s web site soon

Fort Myers High wrestling coach Joey Phillips admittedly woke up Saturday morning not knowing what to expect from his team in its district wrestling meet and ended the day with nothing less than a dual district team championship
Phillips watched 11 Green Wave wrestlers win their weight class as Fort Myers pinned down the Class 2A-District 12 dual wrestling tournament at Barron Collier High
the Green Wave defeated Naples to win the title
It was the third straight district title for Fort Myers and its fourth straight trip to the regional level in the duals format
Friday results: Roundup: South Fort Myers beats Fort Myers for first time in 10 years; Guttery wins No. 300
Thursday results: HS Roundup: Riverdale shocks top-ranked Golden Gate to deal Titans first loss of season
Fort Myers mostly won with a lot of different contributions and from drawing upon experience from meeting some of the teams in the regular season
“We put in a great week of practice this week
“We faced some of these teams during the season
and those matches were closer than they were today
and they were able to get into some big roles and give us wins when we needed it.”
The Green Wave will wrestle in the region tournament on Thursday night at Charlotte High School where it faces Braden River in the region semifinals
Charlotte and Braden River came in first and second
in the 2A-11 district dual meet earlier in the week
Phillips said he was most pleased with all of his senior wrestlers and Rachley-Marc Oscar
Other winners in the final against the Jaguars were: David Collington at 113
Morvens Sainte Jean 220 and Angel Alonso at 285
The Green Wave started the season with big graduation losses yet have gained experience as the season has worn on
“We are improving almost every day now,” Phillips said
“We lost 11 guys to graduation last year
so we had to get kids in there and get some ‘mat time’
it was just a matter of the younger kids stepping up and wrestling
and the older guys showed them how to step up.”
NORTH PORT — The Palmetto Ridge High wrestling team did not like the way the dual tournament season ended a year ago
the Bears hope for a more favorable result this time around
Palmetto Ridge took its first step toward a dual state title by winning the Class 3A-District 8 tournament Saturday afternoon at North Port High School
Palmetto Ridge and the runner-up Raiders advance to the regionals Thursday at Manatee High School
where only the winner among the four teams advances to the third round
the Bears lost the state title to Lakeland Lake Gibson
“We have a very bad taste in our mouth,” Palmetto Ridge coach Blaine Ison said
With the finals starting at the 132-pound weight class
the Bears picked up two forfeit victories right off the bat.
Picking up pins against Riverdale were Carson Miller (152-pound weight class)
Tyler Washburn (120) recorded a technical fall
Brennan Van Hoecke (145) got a major decision
“I could go through the whole lineup and pinpoint each kid
but overall they all wrestled very well,” Ison said
“We had a bunch of kids who stood out.”
As far as Thursday’s second and third rounds
We’ve been in this position the last couple of years
The goal stays the same: keep going and stay hungry.”
Sarasota High and Gulf Coast High in pool play and got past Venice
we did pretty well,” Raiders coach Keith Evans said
“We have a young team and gave up a couple of forfeits.”
Bryan Norgaisse (195) and Charlie Smiarowski (106) earned decisions
“We got outgunned there at the end against a more advanced team,” Evans said
and we accomplished that,” Evans said.
As far as what Evans is looking for Thursday: “A little bit more fight than we got at the end of the day here
I look forward to seeing the energy and effort we had at the beginning of the day.”
Spring football practices are in high gear as Southwest Florida programs use the 20-days the FHSAA allows teams to get on the field to improve before the fall
Every team has questions and this is the time coaches try to find some answers
The News-Press and Naples Daily News quizzed area coaches about what they are trying to learn about their teams this spring.
Here are three big questions that East Lee, Golden Gate
They'll get to see if they found some answers in their official spring games on Thursday
Old Faces in New Places: Where did some of SWFL's best football players transfer to?
More spring football questions: CSN, Marco Island, First Baptist, St. John Neumann, Canterbury
New coaches: How are Southwest Florida's new head football coaches handling spring 2022 practices?
EAST LEE COUNTYThe Jaguars saw considerable improvements in their program last season as P.J
Gibbs guided them to their first victory in two years
and the reins have been handed over to former assistant coach Herbans Paul
who will be the youngest head coach in Southwest Florida
“Just having that belief system behind me is huge,” Paul said
“It makes me feel like I got to make sure that I make the people who trusted me look good.”
Can the Jaguars continue their ascent under a new head coach?Gibbs’ tenure marked a considerable step up in competitiveness in the Jaguars’ program.
The team will have some continuity with Herbans Paul
who was on last year’s coaching staff and knows the area well as a former player at East Lee and Immokalee
and I think that’s a really big part of what we’re trying to do here is get the right people in here so that they can make a difference,” Paul said
Paul noted that this will be “the biggest thing” he is looking to find out about his squad
sending the message about the kind of expectations that will be required
the Jaguars were involved in several close battles
Playing their best in the most important moments will be a point of emphasis for the young team
The Jaguars were filled with promising young talent last season
and Paul is hopeful that will carry over into 2022.
Victor Georges was one of the receiving leaders in Southwest Florida
totaling 618 yards and three touchdowns.
safety Malachi Walker will return along with Maxwell Jean Louis
described by Paul as a swiss-army knife for the Jaguars.
“They’re going to have really important roles on this team
and I’m hoping we can get them to their potential and that they can really show everyone else what I see in them,” Paul said
Nick Bigica enters his fourth year as head coach with the Titans with a 10-18 record
but he's optimistic of a turnaround this season
Thursday's Black and Gold intrasquad scrimmage added to it
"Defense kind of ruled the night a little bit; they normally do in those things

where 11 players have some returning experience
The unit is also being led by defensive coordinator P.J
"We ran to the ball very well," Bigica said
"Coach Gibbs did a great job putting us in situations to be successful."
Defensive backs Jeffery Simpson and John Lee Honorat and linebackers Seddrek Morgan and Mateo Acuna led the way defensively
Simpson has shifted from quarterback to wide receiver to make room for Lely transfer Brian Bachmann under center
has 11 scholarship offers and is a threat anytime he touches the ball
"He's special and he's just getting better," Bigica said
Perhaps the biggest strength doesn't have anything to do with the players
Bigica has the largest coaching staff he's had

They join four-year assistant Tommy Kleinmeyer

"I've never really had this much of a staff to really separate and teach this much."
The Titans did lose leading rusher Tyler Coleman and wide receiver Cristian Chicas to graduation
Bachmann brings two years of starting experience from Lely
"He's been nothing but a godsend to us," Bigica said

but it's allowed him to be used in multiple roles on both sides of the ball and in the return game
"Jeffrey's just an outstanding athlete himself," Bigica said
"He likes to be able to help the team as much as possible
Bigica said Bachmann will be held out of the spring game against Riverdale
with Simpson and Honorat handling the quarterback duties
Honorat ran mostly out of the wildcat when he was lined up there last season
Running back Mario Jolicoeur is another piece offensively
The Lightning turned in a strong 2022 season
ending up as the last Lee County public school standing in the postseason before a lopsided loss to Wharton
Lehigh was often dominant behind the tenacious rushing of five-star running back Richard Young
along with a few intriguing transfers poised to make Lehigh a team to watch
You can’t talk about the Lightning without discussing the guy who brings the boom
doubled his output in his junior season after rushing for 1,755 yards and 19 touchdowns.
All that comes with defenses keying in to try to stop him
Meet the Offense Team: The members of the Southwest Florida Sports Awards All-Region Football Offense Team
Meet the Defense Team: The members of the Southwest Florida Sports Awards All-Region Football Defense Team
Lehigh has welcomed former South Fort Myers wide receiver Andre Jocelyn
former Fort Myers defensive back Ranod Smith and former Island Coast utility player Kelton Henderson to their squad
has seen his recruiting skyrocket in the past few months
These players’ skill sets will certainly fill the void left by top wide receiver/defensive backs Aidan Gousby and Alex Gonzalez
Head coach James Chaney said the transfers are doing well
and it’s been beneficial that they were a part of the team’s offseason workouts
“They’ve been here a little while
so they’ve had a chance to get acclimated,” he said
The Lightning were one of the few area teams to make it beyond the first round of the playoffs last year
and 2022 will be their last year playing with one of the greatest local talents in Young
will vie for this title as well after an undefeated regular season in 2021
Chaney knows that his squad won’t be sneaking under the radar
year out Lehigh has a target on their back,” he said
The Trojans went 4-6 and made the playoffs last year
losing to perennial power Champagnat Catholic in the first round
Lely lost quarterback Brian Bachmann to Golden Gate but returns leading rusher Guerschom Guerrier
one of the top running backs in Southwest Florida
"Everybody knows about Guerschom Guerrier but we just can't rely on only him," Lely fourth-year coach J.J
Who else is there offensively?Everage says pieces are there
it's just figuring out how to assemble them
"The main thing is find the right fit for players at positions
so it's evaluating payers to replace those players we lost last year," he said
Colin Raymond should step in for Bachmann as the new quarterback
"We have to establish a passing game to keep teams honest," Everage said
"Colin's been with us since he was a freshman
He may not have the strongest arm or the fastest legs
but he understands what we're trying to do offensively."
Tanelus also plays slot receiver and is a threat running the ball
Everage will use the spring game against Lehigh to help figure that out
and also get some depth since a pair of starters are out this spring recovering from injuries
"We're trying to build a linebacking corps
and kind of find some dudes up front that can play," Everage said
"Last year we were just so thin at linebacker and so we're kind of in the offseason plugging kids in that can play the spot and trying to build depth at every position
and Everage is optimistic about players coming up
"Last year's JV players will have to step up into these roles," said Everage
"We've got some new guys that came out that we're anxious to see in their first varsity football experience what we've got."
The Trojans will have Monsignor Pace and Bradenton Southeast on the schedule this fall
"That's the level I want to get this program to," he said
Maybe just maybe they see one of my kids and like what they see and that kid gets recruited
I want it to be like a college atmosphere."
The Raiders have a new head coach for the first time since 2017
James Delgado departed for Immokalee after five years with the program
who has 30 years of coaching experience in Georgia and Florida’s west coast.
but the team’s talent should not be dismissed
Hepler spent last season coaching at South Fort Myers and came away impressed with the local teams
Hepler’s teams won 10 district championships and went undefeated in the regular season five times
A return to head coaching is an exciting prospect for Hepler
“I’ve been pumped up,” he said
Riverdale’s last winning season came in 2018 when they went undefeated in the regular season
they have not managed more than three wins in a season
Hepler is installing a new offense and defense with the hope that it will keep the team competitive in the new Class 4S-District 15
which will see the Raiders facing Charlotte
“The kids are working their tails off” to be ready
Chief among the Raiders’ returning stars is Jaheim Clarke
a three-star defensive back who thrived last year
Tyler Abrams saw some action at quarterback toward the end of the season
throwing seven touchdowns to four interceptions.
The team is not short on players at the skill positions
and Hepler said this time in the spring will be used to sort out the first-team players
“I think the talent is there,” Hepler said.

The Raiders used two big plays to take a 14-7 lead in the first quarter
Golden Gate rode the two-headed quarterback of Jeffery Simpson and John Lee Honorat
especially in the second half when the Titans outscored the Raiders 16-0
The Titans held out Lely transfer Brian Bachmann
and First Baptist transfer Mario Jolicoeur
Riverdale's Terry Jackson fumbled on the first play from scrimmage
3 spring football questions: Barron Collier, Dunbar, Gulf Coast and SFCA
3 spring football questions: Fort Myers, North Fort Myers, ECS, South Fort Myers, Island Coast
But Jackson's next carry went 80 yards for a touchdown to tie it
The Titans then fumbled twice on the same play
who returned it 65 yards for a touchdown to give the Raiders the lead
Golden Gate's Trayvon Jean capped an 80-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run
with Honorat running out of the wildcat or handing the ball off to Jean on each of the 12 plays
who took it 68 yards for a touchdown and a 28-14 lead.
the Titans got a safety in the end zone to close the scoring
But first-year coach Frank Hepler is just fine with that
Jackson showed some flashes on jet sweeps and from the backfield
but otherwise the Raiders weren't very effective
"We've only got 30% of our offense in right now
so we've got a long way to go," Hepler said.
and only gave up the one big play to Pray.
So a decisive spring game loss isn't going to deter him too much.
"I don't see anywhere in the state where they're keeping records for the state playoffs in the spring," he said
We're just going to keep working and see how the summer goes and be ready for the fall."
After the big fumble recovery and ensuing touchdown
the Titans didn't let giving up two big touchdown plays keep them down.
"That's just what spring football's all about
and that's what it was," Titans coach Nick Bigica said
"We came out and we knew it was going to be a little rough
first time hitting another team and getting after it
We knew if we can keep fighting we knew we'd eventually get after it
but the Titans were still able to move the ball effectively with Simpson and Honorat taking turns at quarterback
"We just wanted to get better at everything we do
We wanted to play as a team and we did that."
Gibbs has taken over as defensive coordinator
and the Titans defense only allowed the one score on Jackson's long run
"All we preached all spring was run to the ball

The Lightning struck early and often against the Trojans on Thursday night
Lehigh picked up from where they left off a season ago
bullying their opponent with their powerful running game on offense and playing equally vicious ball on defense.
Five-star running back Richard Young went for more than 150 yards and three touchdowns
Lehigh also scored on a 22-yard pass from quarterback Darryl Hodge to Kerby Joseph
an 8-yard rumble by quarterback Dorian Mallary and a scoop-and-score by Travin Mahone.
“It was very good to see them not drop off and get better,” Lehigh head coach James Chaney said
“It seems like they got better from last year
We got to tighten up our fundamentals a bit
but for the most part I was happy about tonight."
The Lightning scored 41 points in the first half before pulling their starters for a second half with a running clock
The Trojans struggled to get much going on offense
while a lack of numbers and experience showed on defense
“We were overmatched from the get-go,” Lely head coach JJ Everage said
Young put up his numbers with ease – including a pair of touchdowns from 50 and 40 yards out
On the Trojans’ first play on offense
Lehigh linebacker Tyre Cunningham impressively wrestled down a Lely receiver at the line of scrimmage. Two plays later
he forced the fumble that Mahone took in for a touchdown
Cunningham was a breakout player last year at linebacker
leading the area in tackles and anchoring the team’s stingy defense
“Tyre Cunningham is still the best defensive player in Southwest Florida,” Chaney said
Jaheim Buchanon is a force on both sides of the ball
so we got some guys who’ve been here a long time who came to play tonight
and that’s what you expect out of your older guys.”
Hodge and Mallary split time at the position last year
Hodge got the start on Thursday because Mallary had been competing at the state track and field meet with Lehigh’s 4x400 relay team
Hodge showed an immediate connection with Joseph
“I think Darryl Hodge had a really good quarter and throwing the short passes
getting the money balls in,” Chaney said
Mallary showed off the speed honed during the track season
rushing for 48 yards and a touchdown on three carries
adding a valuable component to an offense where Young draws the attention
“You can tell he’s progressed and gotten bigger and gotten faster
and that adds a very dangerous element to his game and we look forward to it,” Chaney said
There’s even more to see from the Lightning
The football team will benefit from transfers Kelton Henderson
but school district rules keep them from playing in the spring
All three were formidable offensive players and Henderson
has particularly seen his recruiting take off this year
“I would have liked to see them play – it’s like not being able to open toys on Christmas morning,” Chaney said
“It’ll be a great thing when they are able to suit up.”
The Trojans were outmatched but never gave up
The team rarely crossed midfield but did have some nice plays on special teams
including recovering a mishandled punt return by the Lightning
Everage described his team’s numbers as a “thin 30” and said they were starting a 14-year-old true freshman at middle linebacker
“The attrition factor takes over and it’s kind of hard to finish four quarters against a team the caliber of Lehigh
but I’m proud of the way our kids fought,” he said
Lely has some players who are tough to handle
The most prominent among them on Tuesday was Jakeem Tanelus
who caught four passes in the first half and took over signal caller duties in the second
Lehigh bottled up running back Guerschom Guerrier
but he still stood out as a strong two-way player for the Trojans
“That’s what teams are going to do – they’re going to pack the box on us to stop Guerschom
so we have to throw it,” Everage said
adding that the team was not able to make the most of that on Tuesday.
The Trojans’ quarterback got some good reps
and it doesn’t get any tougher than facing the Lightning’s fierce defense.
Everage thought his sophomore quarterback looked a little nervous
Raymond connected on eight of his 14 passes and didn’t turn the ball over
“It’s a different monster when you’re between the grid,” Everage said
“I think it was good to get this under our belt
we have a lot of kids out there that haven’t ever played varsity football."
Fort Myers wasn’t worried about the scoreboard in its spring football game against Lake Wales
They’ll also note they were up 28-17 early in the fourth quarter when they deployed a lot of their younger players
while the Highlanders kept their starters in the full game
“The biggest thing about this spring is we got through the whole thing healthy
and that's with my veteran guys,” Fort Myers coach Sam Sirianni said
they get mad at me all spring because I don't let them hit very much
And we need to see out of that group who we can get
And I think we found a few guys to the naked eye that are going to play for us in the fall and that wouldn't have happened if we would have kept our regulars in there the whole night.”
The Green Wave did have a shaky first half
with some miscommunication in the secondary leading to a little more than 200 first-half passing yards for Lake Wales
The biggest breakdowns came in the final six minutes
Lake Wales’ Carlos Mitchell was left wide open in the right corner of the end zone for a 30-yard score
the Highlanders completed back-to-back passes of 71 yards on a slant and run and a 9-yard fade route touchdown to go 80 yards in 18 seconds for a 17-7 halftime lead
The Green Wave offense also needed a while to get going before La’ern Bonelli pulled a 26-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Chris McFoley away from a defender with 11:34 left in the second quarter for a 7-3 lead
Fort Myers’ halftime adjustments showed on both sides of the ball
The Green Wave quickly got the Highlanders off the field to start the second half and five plays later McFoley hit Madrid Tucker down the right sideline for a 41-yard score
The Greenies defense then recovered fumbles to end the Highlanders’ next two series
the second recovered by Charles Michel at Lake Wales’ 14-yard-line
McFoley hit Alex Thelusma on a slant for a 16-yard score for a 21-17 lead at 3:19 of the third quarter
McFoley connected with Bonelli on a pass that he took 58 yards but was pulled own at the 1
Ricardo Noel scored with 10:30 left in the game for a 28-17 lead
“I thought the bigger thing in the second half is
I thought we started being a lot better at the line of scrimmage," Sirianni said
they had us coming and going in the run and throw
And so we couldn't really activate anybody
extra into the pass game because we couldn't play the run
to add an extra man into coverage and do a couple of things.”
Fort Myers started rotating in its younger players and Lake Wales drove down the field with Corey Harris Jr
scoring from 3-yards out and got the two-point conversion to make it 28-25
Fort Myers freshman Jeremiah Samuels picked off the ball at midfield and returned it to the Lake Wales 9
The Green Wave reserves would get no closer and settled for a field goal and a 31-26 lead
The Highlanders would score on a 42-yard touchdown with 1:04 left and Fort Myers kneeled to end the game
“That last two series you probably had all freshmen and newcomers in the game and I thought
you're gonna see some bright spots here,” Sirianni said
“But obviously we had a couple breakdowns but
as a coach you just have to stick with what you know that your plan is
and I wasn't gonna throw us out there with a minute to go and take a chance.”
1. They have some weapons and that starts with McFoley under center
dropped some perfect passes into his skill players Bonelli
“Chris was very impressive to me under duress at times and made some key throws and key times and he's got weapons I mean
that's a pretty good group of weapons,” Sirianni said
“We've just got to figure out ways to get them the ball
maybe a little more unconventional because when you're young in the trenches.”
McFoley admitted he was nervous when the game started and just needed some time to find his zone
“Once I hit Madrid Tucker on the jet
that’s when everything clicked and I was able to hit all my other receivers
Ern and all them on the go balls,” McFoley said
2. It’s all going to start up front
The Green Wave have one returning starter on the offensive line with center Brady Carrington
The line gave McFoley time to pass but Noel didn’t find too many holes
although he almost walked into the end zone untouched on his 1-yard run
“They're gonna get better and they're a good group but it's gonna take them a while so we got to find a way to spread the ball around and utilize what we have,” Sirianni said
the Greenies’ defensive front looks like a strength
The team is breaking in all new linebackers and the biggest breakdowns came in the secondary but the front looked solid
a tackle for loss and recovering a key fumble
Sirianni believes he has a rotation of six players he’ll be able to utilize along the defensive front including Ja’quelle Dixon
North Fort Myers 36The Red Knights allowed 54 points and was gashed for nearly 500 yards on the ground — yet coach Dwayne Mack said it was a great night
his entire defensive line was inactive and
he may have found his quarterback for this season
With starting quarterback Tanner Helton transferring to Evangelical Christian
the Red Knights appeared in danger of having a hole at the most important position
soon-to-be junior Bryce Duross stepped up and had a great night
the led his team from a 29-point third-quarter deficit to 24 unanswered points to cut the Port Charlotte lead to 41-36 late in the third
But the hole was too great and the Pirates righted the ship to win 54-36 at the Pirate Cove
Edd Guerrier scored on the Pirates' second play from scrimmage to make it 7-0
North was able to get a 33-yard scoring run from Rashad Snow and
following a Levontai Summersett interception
Duross found Jordan Carr on a 20-yard connection to give North a 12-7 lead early in the second quarter after missing two extra points on bad snaps
The Pirates exploded against an undermanned North defense
quarterback Bryce Eaton threw a touchdown pass to Jamal Streeter
Duross hit Santino Arroyo with a touchdown pass
Snow scored again and Ceon Gordon recovered a blocked punt and brought it to the house to make it 41-36 as Summersett scored three two-point conversions
Port Charlotte held on as Justice Becerill scored two touchdown runs late to put the Pirates in the clear
What 3 things did North Fort Myers learn?1
They have a starting quarterback in Bryce Duross. He is strong
not afraid to run the football and usually makes the right decisions
with some key strikes to Andre Devine to set up another
“We’re happy we have a quarterback come out and get us 36 points against a really good Port Charlotte team
It was a good day for North Fort Myers football,” Mack said
“Bryce did a good job and we're looking forward to the future
The Red Knights were down 29 points and made it into a game in a third quarter that saw six touchdowns scored
A blocked punt after all the problems North had with their own kicking game really made the game interesting
They only surrendered after allowing a fumble deep in Port Charlotte territory and a late interception in the closing seconds
“We had a lot of fight and a lot of grit," Mack said. "We had a lot of guys out
The Red Knights got a new kicker on the team who has been able to make some from long distance
his only two attempts never got to him as there were bad snaps on both
There was also a bad snap on a second quarter punt from Summersett that put Port Charlotte in a short field that they would capitalize on and another they were lucky Summersett was able to grab
they eschewed the one-pointers and tried for two
Chasing the points worked because it got them back in the game
But getting the ball snapped well is key if they want to have a successful special teams
The Jaguars' youth showed in their 11-point loss to Victory Christian Thursday night
even holding the lead after a 9-yard keeper from junior quarterback Garry Hagan in the second quarter
Hagan went 6-for-10 passing and rushed for 44 yards with one interception
Kicker TJ Gamez was true on his only field goal attempt of the night from 22 yards out
Junior running back Justin Lockwood punched both in from the 2-yard line after Victory marched down the field on back-to-back possessions
sophomore Michael Morris ran one in from 9 yards out for his only score of the night
keeping pressure on Victory’s pass-heavy offense, but several good balls from junior quarterback Hayden Brown kept the Jaguars secondary on their heels
Maxwell Jean-Louise and Chris Osbourn both forced fumbles for the Jaguars
Head Coach Herbans Paul is excited to grow with his young team
The first-year head coach believes the dedication is there from his squad
it was amazing to me watching them come out,” said Paul
“They did exactly what we wanted them to do
The Jaguars have five seniors on their spring roster
“Some of our younger guys are going to have to step up
East Lee’s youth will continue to be a speed bump
This summer will be instrumental in terms of being physically prepared for the fall
Paul said his team has already shown gains in the weight room
but more needs to be done for them to compete at a high level
the Jaguars need to be sound physically so that they can focus on their schemes
“Let’s throw some weight on there
and focus on getting stronger,” Paul said
Senior cornerback Malachi Walker is one of the few seniors on this Jaguar roster getting significant playing time on defense
Paul said he intends on using him as a leader while younger starters fill in their roles on that side of the ball
“We’ve got so many because our guys are so young,” Paul said when asked about potential leaders stepping up
Expect East Lee to have some new leaders emerge as the team continues to grow together
ECS' only score came on a 15-yard pass from Calvin Kress to Jack Shuker midway through the third quarter following a fumble recovery
That made it 14-7 and Lemon Bay would later score to make it 21-7
Quarterback Trey Rutan guided the Manta Rays on two efficient first-half touchdown drives but had a long touchdown run of his own called back by a penalty
Both of those scoring drives were capped by Landon Spanninger
who ripped off a 49-yard run for the first strike and powered in from inside the 5-yard-line for the second
Lemon Bay's Amry Wells and Clayton Donahue each collected an interception in the first half
and most of it in Prince George’s County
causing flooding on roadways just as the D.C
There was flash flooding reported in the Riverdale area
with rapidly rising water making the roads impassable
Storm Team4 meteorologist Ryan Miller said
The heaviest rain has moved out and flash flood warning in Prince George’s county has expired

Prince George’s County Fire/EMS reported several water rescues Monday afternoon
Prince George’s County police were on the scene for traffic control
WTOP’s Kyle Cooper spoke to a woman who tried to move her car in a parking lot
near the Crestwood Medical Building in Riverdale
she and her rescuer rescued another person who also got stuck inside her car
Cooper said the water in the parking lot reached some 4 to 5 feet
submerging some vehicles and making some of them float away
The earlier forecast of sizzling weather also prompted D.C. to activate its Heat Emergency Plan, and residents were encouraged to stay indoors during the afternoon. They could also head down to District cooling centers

Storm Team4 meteorologist Chuck Bell said he expects the hot weather and storm chances to linger through the middle of the week
“Widespread severe weather is not expected but … it’s important to remember that every thunderstorm poses at least some risk,” Bell said
Though Tuesday also provides for high temperatures and storm chances
Wednesday will bring storms with the potential for heavy rain
Bell said some areas may see between an inch and an inch-and-a-half of rain
less humid weather is expected to make its way to the D.C
but it isn’t expected to stay stable for too long
“It’s getting to be ‘that’ time of the year
The statistical peak of hurricane season is around Sept
so there is a long time left in hurricane season,” Bell said
TUESDAY: Hot and humid with a heat index near 100
WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy and cooler with rain and thunder likely
THURSDAY: Morning clouds and showers clearing by the afternoon

The southwest-facing second-floor balcony at the front of the mansion offers views of the city skyline beyond Riverdale Park
The homeowners say they use every room in the big house
including the lower-level games room which has a built-in fridge and wine cooler
“Sunrises are spectacular,” Gord Shearn says of the primary retreat
spacious enough to include a comfy lounge area with fireplace
is part of a new three-storey addition at the back of the house
Both the front verandah and second-floor balcony wrap around two sides of the 1906 mansion
there’s a bedroom with a reading nook by the window
Oak columns and the main staircase are among the original features that were restored to their former beauty
Matching trim was recreated by combining three different sections of wood
and Jeff Riffle with their dog Kevin in the lounge area of their primary retreat
ample living room and big south-facing windows
mansion boasted breathtaking light and grandeur
Location: 465 Broadview Ave.
The owners: Gord Shearn and his husband Jeff Riffle love sitting on their second-floor balcony overlooking Riverdale Park East
It’s so alive,” Shearn says of the scene across the road
But their favourite perch almost didn’t happen
When Shearn applied for a building permit to renovate their majestic mansion
the city didn’t believe the balcony ever existed because the railings had fallen off
But after diving into the archives and old Google street views
he found images showing an access door and other traces — enough evidence for permission to replicate the balcony
Shearn, who served as architect, interior designer and project manager for the redesign and reconstruction, unearthed other historic details about the home. Designed by architect Henry Simpson, the house was built for drugstore chain founder Albert E. Walton for $7,000 in 1906, according to Shearn, principal at GordonGroup
it appears Walton and his wife had separate bedroom suites and servants who lived on the third floor
A tiny six-by-five-foot room on the main floor was likely the butler’s pantry
Walton’s second-floor “master bedroom” is now the current owners’ spacious bathroom in their 650-square-foot primary suite
And the back staircases used by the servants no longer exist
Shearn maintains he never planned to purchase the place after promising Riffle, an artist
I’m going to have to buy this house.’ ”
“the light and grandeur of it was breathtaking,” Shearn recalls of that moment in 2022
the house was well-built but “really untouched,” explains Shearn
“So everything had to come out right back to the bricks.”
he aimed to make it feel like everything was original by seamlessly blending new and old
including doors with marks “from 120 years of use,” majestic oak columns and archway
“I think we brought all the charm back,” says Shearn, who worked on his “labour of love” on-site seven days a week for 11 months
He and his crew built a major addition onto the back of the house
self-contained garden suite and large garage in behind
Altogether, there’s almost 6,000 square feet of living space designed for a 21st century lifestyle while respecting the home’s heritage
The realtor: Dubbed Simpson House, the property represents an unparalleled “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” says Daena Allen-Noxon
desirable neighbourhood and the added value of the garden suite
With the attention paid to detail and quality of the rebuild
the home is “exceptional,” says Allen-Noxon
adding other agents call it “the most beautiful house they’ve ever been in.”
The sunrise and sunset views alone “just light up the house,” she adds
Shearn says he and Riffle knew it would be too much house for them and their silver Labrador retriever
But living there “has been an absolute joy for us,” he declares
The sellers hope to find “someone who’s gonna love it as much as we do.”
The listing agent for this home is Daena Allen-Noxon, broker at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada

It's safe to say the Whittington household is a happy one these days
Riverdale senior twins Alexis and Amanda Whittington are set to play for their third consecutive Class AAA girls basketball title Saturday (1 p.m
at MTSU's Murphy Center) after the Lady Warriors won 77-59 Friday over Bearden in the semifinals
is one of the top reserves for the Warrior boys team that will play in the state tournament next week
More: Riverdale girls down Bearden to reach third straight Class AAA state finals
The girls are about to play their last (high school) ballgame in the same arena where they'll start their (college) careers
You have Preston getting a good amount of playing time as a sophomore and going to the state
Preston Whittington has been watching his big sisters in the state tournament for the last three seasons
Turns out it's been a good learning experience
"They've given me some tips on playing here and the environment," Preston said
"They've told me how to handle the situation the best
One could imagine what has dominated discussions around the Whittington household lately
who scored a game-high 20 points Friday's 77-59

"The kids always encourage each other and never beat each other down
Amanda and Alexis have become accustomed to playing at MTSU's Murphy Center, the same floor they'll be competing as Lady Raiders next season
and that's trying to win a third consecutive state championship
something that hasn't been accomplished in Class AAA since Shelbyville won four in a row from 1989-92
Then next week they'll do as their brother has done for them the past three years
"I'm very proud of them and what they've accomplished in their careers," said Preston
"I'm proud of (Preston) and their whole team for making it this far
I'm proud of how they've come along and how well he's contributed
"I just want us all to play well and finish strong."

The bridge connecting Riverdale Park Station to the Discovery District will open on Friday, June 22, at 10 a.m., according to an announcement by county Councilmember (and Chair of the County Council) Dannielle Glaros, with a ribbon-cutting to take place at the bridge at 9:30 a.m.
The new connection will allow bicyclists better access the trail system and give pedestrians the ability to more easily access a MARC Station and the College Park Metro Station
The bridge will run from Van Buren Street — which goes past Whole Foods through the center of the development — over the CSX railroad to Lafayette Avenue in the southern end of the University of Maryland research park
“I think everyone in town is extremely happy that the bridge is opening
and we will soon have enhanced connections between Riverdale Park Station
Riverdale Park neighborhoods east of the railroad tracks
and the communities north and east of Riverdale Park including Berwyn Heights
and New Carrollton,” Riverdale Park Mayor Alan Thompson told the Hyattsville Wire
Though it will be one of a handful of area crossings for Route 1 communities
the bridge is designed to discourage overuse
Van Buren Street has a large median and on-street parking to slow down traffic through Riverdale Park Station
while Lafayette Avenue is in a back corner of the Discovery District
Still, it could be a game-changer for the research park, which is otherwise a little off the beaten path from the main attractions along Route 1. With the College Park Metro station also undergoing some major changes
The bridge will also be a short bike or walk from the Purple Line stop on River Road in the Discovery District
which means some residents of the townhomes at Riverdale Park Station may use it to connect as well
At least one council member in Riverdale Park has suggested the town add a mural to the bridge, as Hyattsville did with a similar railroad overpass near Franklins

The Atlantic has just released the precise attack plans laid out by Trump Administration advisers during a leaked chat on a commercial app prior to a military strike against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen earlier this month
published a story stating that US national security leaders included him in an encrypted Signal messaging group chat
Goldberg did not release specific details regarding the attack itself
In a new story published Wednesday morning, March 26, headlined "Here Are the Attack Plans That Trump’s Advisers Shared on Signal," stunning details involving specific actions of the war plan were revealed
The Atlantic went on to say the new details were released after the administration had downplayed the importance of the text messages inadvertently sent to The Atlantic’s editor in chief
In addition to Hegseth and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz
who inadvertently added Goldberg to the chat
A total of 18 people participated in the chat
The newly released texts include Hegseth mentioning to the group when F-18 fighter jets were launching
"The first target – their top missile guy – we had positive ID of him walking into his girlfriend’s building and it’s now collapsed.”
The use of the Signal app to discuss war plans may violate the Espionage Act
as classified information was shared on an unclassified system
and could have jeopardized national security

School Construction News
Design – Construction – Operations
— When officials at Riverdale Country School in the Bronx decided to replace the school’s 18,000-square-foot Perkins Building
they sought the guidance of New York-based Architecture Research Office (ARO)
ARO designed what will soon be the school’s new Upper Learning Building
learning and administrative spaces as well as key connections to the outdoors
Construction began on the facility in June 2015
with anticipated completion and occupancy in August 2016
The project team also includes engineer Buro Happold of New York and construction firms Williams Scotsman of New York and Boston-headquartered Shawmut Design & Construction
graphic design firm Open of New York and audiovisual consultant Threshold Acoustics of Chicago also contributed to the project
School Construction News spoke with Kim Yao
Q: What was the impetus for the Perkins Building replacement project and what shortcomings or inefficiencies will the project seek to address
Yao: The new Upper Learning Building will replace the former Perkins Building
which was built in the 1960s and designed for high school students
The original Perkins Building lacked internal hallways
necessitating passage through primary spaces like the library and theater in order to access classrooms
Classrooms were of varied sizes and not located in a manner that correlated to the current study body (i.e
number of classrooms per grade and adjacency between them)
The new building will allow the school to reconfigure the way classrooms are organized on campus; now
all the third- through fifth-grade classes will be in one location allowing for greater collaboration
The new building will house a cafeteria/student center
and this new facility will create a greater sense of community for the campus
there will be a flexible theater space that will enhance the Lower School’s performing arts program
The original building also had significant exterior envelope
and environmental and energy-performance issues
Q: How did the school’s curriculum or approach to education help drive the building’s design
Yao: Riverdale Country School’s pedagogical approach to education was fundamental to the design of the new Upper Learning Building
the school has emphasized a connection to the outdoors as part of the student experience
Teaching and learning at Riverdale occur in classroom settings but also in alternative locations — hallways
The environment is social and collaborative — classrooms are co-taught by two teachers each
Q: What specific challenges did the project site present and how did the design and construction teams navigate or mitigate those challenges
Yao: The building is located in the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx within a Special Natural Area District
The site is bounded by the sloped woodland of the 28-acre Wave Hill public gardens to the north and east and Riverdale Park to the west
The design of the project meets stringent NYC Department of City Planning guidelines by preserving existing vegetation and outcroppings; planting new
pre-approved indigenous plant species; and minimizing impact to site permeability while improving stormwater management
Q: How will the building serve as a learning or teaching tool
Yao: Riverdale Country School’s campus setting is a unique attribute; students regularly move between campus buildings and use exterior spaces for educational activities
The design of the new 23,000-square-foot building is based upon two key concepts: The building is a lens through which students can experience and study the surrounding environment
and the building creates a commons for the lower school campus
providing multiple spaces at various scales for people to meet and interact
Through carefully designed apertures that maximize views and provide direct access to the landscape
the building facilitates student engagement with the school’s natural setting
connecting the cafeteria and theater that anchor the north and south ends while tying into the greater campus
and connecting the hill at the east to the playing fields and river at the west
Flanking this generous circulation commons are new classrooms
offices and multi-use space; classrooms open up directly to adjacent
exterior spaces for teaching and group projects
Graphic design is integrated within the architecture
custom signage can be used by teachers to prompt activities or to promote sharing
Text [displayed] in other areas will explain sustainability features and attributes of the building and site
Q: Describe plans for the building’s interior and furnishings

An East Hanover police officer charged with driving drunk in a fatal highway car crash earlier this month illegally turned and drove in the wrong direction prior to the collision
according to an affidavit of probable cause obtained by NorthJersey.com
Keith Gunther, 42, was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide and third-degree assault by auto in the crash
The crash killed 55-year-old Paterson resident Hamid Shabuddin
the passenger of the vehicle struck by Gunther
whose identity was redacted from the affidavit
The driver remained hospitalized as of Monday with a shattered kneecap
Officers responded to the crash on Route 23 in Riverdale between Newark Pompton Turnpike and the on-ramps to Route 287 shortly before 11 p.m
They determined Shabuddin was dead at the scene
and the driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries
Gunther was standing outside his Ford F-150 and told police he was not injured
He also stated that he had consumed alcohol prior to driving
and officers determined he "exhibited signs of being under the influence" while undergoing field sobriety tests
Further investigation revealed Gunther got off Route 287 north via Exit 52B and made an illegal U-turn onto Route 23 north
He then drove south opposite the flow of traffic until the crash occurred
said Wednesday afternoon it is too early in the proceedings to comment on the evidence in the case
he highlighted his client's "distinguished" public service career that includes 17 years with the East Hanover Police Department and more than two decades in the Air National Guard
"He’s respected by his peers and in the communities that he has served," Scrivo said
he mourns the loss of any life and any injury sustained and prays for those who are impacted.."
Gunther was released from custody pursuant to the Criminal Justice Reform Act
which means he is subject to pretrial monitoring
must surrender his driver's license and passport and refrain from excessive alcohol use
He is scheduled for a pre-indictment conference Monday
in Morris County Superior Court in front of Judge Claudia Jones

BATON ROUGE - Investigators with the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office have reported the arrest of a man suspected of dealing drugs following a two-month investigation into his activities.
Detectives say 36-year-old Donovan Evans was arrested Wednesday by a team of officials that included East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office Narcotics and members of S.W.A.T
after two months of monitoring Evans' activities
detectives and others attempted to locate him at one of the three homes (on Winbourne Avenue
and East Riverdale Avenue) he'd been seen frequenting.
officials say they discovered Evans at the East Riverdale Avenue location
and over $25,000 in cash during their search of all three locations.
Investigators say when they questioned Evans about the items found in the homes he admitted to using heroin but claimed the weapons were not his and said he'd gotten most of the cash from gambling.
who has previously been arrested on charges of armed robbery and attempted first-degree murder of a police officer
was arrested and taken to East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on drug-related charges.
Riverdale Park is a sprawling green space that spans from one side of the Don River to the other
Divided into two sections by the river and the Don Valley Parkway, Riverdale Park East is easily the more popular attraction with an expansive hill that slopes west from Broadview Avenue
east and west of the Don River and the DVP
It's from this vantage point that you'll find a pretty unforgettable view of the downtown Toronto skyline
The park is a popular spot to admire Toronto's downtown skyline
In the winter, this massive dip makes for the perfect tobogganing hill
Riverdale Park East is a popular place for picnics
you'll find those living on the east side of the Prince Edward Viaduct flocking here to lounge in the shade of the trees or starfished out in the sun
There are sprawling sports fields on both sides of the park
Riverdale Park takes over approximately 104 acres
the majority of which lies east of the Don
A monument of Chinese politician Sun Yat-sen sits on the southern side of Riverside Park East and serves as a homage to nearby East Chinatown
the land has been repurposed several times for actual and proposed endeavours
including in the 1970s when it was scouted as the potential home for the 40,000 seat stadium that would become the SkyDome
Green poles sticking out of the ground are actually exhaust pipes for methane gas
Walk along Broadview Avenue at the easternmost part of the park and you'll see a number of tall green posts sticking up out of the ground
The park was used as a landfill around the turn of the twentieth century
Those are actually exhaust pipes
which today are still subtly dispelling methane gas from the decades-old garbage that's buried underneath
There are a few trails that have been maintained by the City and volunteers
Once belonging to a man named John Scadding, an early colonialist, the land was divvied up between the grounds for the infamous Don Jail and a City-owned park in 1880
The park is also a popular spot for working out
It wasn't until the 1960s that the park was monumentally divided by the construction of the DVP
Efforts to maintain the Don River watershed saw the planting of many trees
The northern part of the hill has also filled out with native trees and shrubs thanks to the City of Toronto and Bring Back the Don
a citizen task force that was dedicated to preserving the Don River's watershed and that helped to plant many maple and ash trees in 1990
A marsh was also added in 2002 to help collect storm water
A plaque goes into detail about the marshes' contribution to the local ecosystem
The Riverside Park bridge spans across the DVP
Though both sides have enough field space for soccer
Riverdale Park East is home to a running track
plus a pretty impressive gym for working out
These stairs lead into the Lower Don River Trail
Just north of Bridgepoint Hospital is where you'll find the green pedestrian bridge, which spans across the DVP and the rail tracks to Riverdale Park West
Follow the Lower Don River Trail to reach another small foot bridge over the Don
Further north is a small footbridge, technically part of the Lower Don River Trail
which you can also hop onto from the west side
The Sam Pollock Baseball diamond is a popular spot for games
Riverdale Park West is where you'll find the Sam Pollock Baseball Diamond
which is bustling at night with players and leagues during non COVID times
Head further into the trails and you'll eventually find yourself at Riverdale Farm
Many would argue that looking southwest across Riverdale Park is the best view of Toronto, but so often when we examine changes to the city's skyline
we focus on the view from the Port Lands and the Island
There's a reason Broadview Avenue got its name
so let's have a look at this captivating angle of Toronto to see how much has changed over the last century
This is the view from Riverdale Park East from 1914 to 2020
Looking south across the Don Jail where Bridgepoint Health now sits above the Don Valley in 1914
Looking southwest with the early skyline in the background in 1914

Note the presence of New City Hall to the right of the frame
It looks shorter than it is because of the tree line
but the nearby placement of the Sheraton Centre is a dead giveaway
Commerce Court North has been dwarfed by modern buildings
but the city has majorly filled in along streets like Yonge
from Scotia Plaza to Brookfield Place to the cluster of condos at the bottom left
the skyline looks similar to present day from this angle
but it's still missing some density and the knife-like top of the L Tower
Compare this night shot from 2013 to the one from the 1980s for a sense of just how much downtown Toronto has intensified over the last 35 years

2010 at 8:24 pm ETDrugs were the motive for the quadruple slaying that occurred early Friday morning on the 6800 block of Third Street in Lanham
or the unincorporated county area east of Riverdale Park
According to Prince George's County Police Chief Roberto L
marijuana was found in the structure where the fatal shootings took place
The suspects in custody have admitted to involvement in the murders
"This was a drug relationship that went very bad," Hylton said at a Saturday morning press conference
It only took police a little more than a day to arrest people in the case
were arrested and charged with first degree murder
and two children - Shakur Sylvester Sikyala
The boy would have celebrate his fifth birthday next week
and Mwasiti Sikyala is their paternal aunt
the one aspect of the case that has mystified authorities is the condition the victims were living in when they were found
They were living in the second floor apartment of a detached garage behind a home. On Friday, there were piles of trash and debris in the structure visible from the street. The Washington Post is reporting that there were also containers of feces found among the waste
The victims had been living in filth and without air conditioning
although the structure did have electricity
In what he described as an "inside landfill," the police have collected 10 tons of compacted trash and debris
"They were very deplorable and dilapidated conditions," he said
Hylton said they have not identified whether the children went to any schools in the area
He also said police are looking into whether social services was aware of the situation
the house was cited for a code violation in February of 2009 for open storage of trash and debris
a fence in disrepair and open storage of a dismantled and inoperable car
Those problems were fixed later that month
Prince George's County Councilman Eric Olson (D-Dist
3) said he went to Friday's Riverdale murder scene and talked to some residents about what he described as "a horrible scene."
and I can't imagine what kind of situation it was and what was going on [before the crime]," he said
Police were originally called to the scence around 2:40 a.m
quickly identified it as a murder and secured people near the crime scene
"This is a quiet community," Hylton said Friday
adding that there have only been two break-ins in the area since the beginning of the year
Hylton said the investigation is still ongoing
as police try to identify why Bellard and Gilmer were in the area
"They don't have any ties to the county," he said
"We're working with our narcotics enforcement division and reaching out to authorities in Texas."
A drug connection between the two areas will also be investigated
"The good news about this is that the community can now feel safe," Hylton said
Editor's Note: Several Riverdale Park residents have asked us to clarify where this murder occurred
It is in an unicorporated area east of Riverdale Park
Police say this area can be defined as Riverdale but also Lanham and New Carrollton
but with its proximity to Riverdale Park and its significance
