James & Main has only been around since late last month
but the owners of the new East Rockaway restaurant are aiming for a more lived-in vibe
Billed as “The South Shore’s Newest Classic” and serving “elevated American cuisine,” it’s the latest venture for restaurant veteran Danny Quinn
“We hope as soon as you come through the door
that it has a certain feel that takes you back in time a little bit.” Quinn said
the top half of the restaurant’s name is in honor of Quinn’s 6-year-old son
“He just knows it’s his daddy’s work,” Quinn said
The restaurant, which was previously home to the eateries Reel and The Fishery, has room for up to 150 patrons across two bars, an outdoor deck and a dining room lined with paintings and antiques that have been collected for decades
“This is something that we’ve been working on in our heads for a long time,” Quinn said
the wines and the whiskeys — it’s something we knew that would happen.”
Under executive chef Andrew Krug, Quinn said the early favorites on James & Main’s menu are the J&M Steak — a 10-ounce wagyu strip steak — along with olive oil poached halibut, gnocchi pistachio and an oyster bar with a selection of raw oysters
Other menu options include a rack of Australian lamb
a pork chop Milanese and a bistro burger with cheddar
there are various seafood offerings — including a $70 seafood tower with a house lobster salad and six-piece servings of shrimp cocktail
“The response has been really good,” Quinn said
“We’re grateful that people have been out and showing a lot of support.”
for live jazz and acoustic performances on the ample outdoor deck
Quinn said he’s excited to see his longtime vision for the place rounding into shape
“East Rockaway is a great village and the surrounding towns are awesome
“This is something that we think should stand out on the South Shore.”

Filet mignon is part of a three-course prix fixe menu at James & Main in East Rockaway
There's an old-time atmosphere at James & Main
cavernous restaurant perched on the canals of East Rockaway
Although the name refers to its Main Street address
with a walkway that runs around the water and historical signs referencing a ghost and a centuries-old oven
the tavern-style dining room is packed with an impressive collage of old paintings and photographs
Together with the dark booths and moody lighting
the setting feels like the perfect opportunity for a Manhattan or a classic cocktail
Other diners might take up in the side room
which is quieter but also scattered with vintage relics and ephemera
The bar area at James & Main in East Rockaway
Service industry veteran Danny Quinn spent about a decade collecting all of the elements for his first restaurant
He rebuilt the entire dining room in the space that used to be The Fishery
adding elements like solid bronze fixtures and a plank of wood he converted into a host stand
so a meal at James & Main is low-key and relaxing
The restaurant also has a patio out back that looks onto the canals which is tented and heated during the winter
Bread arrives at the table with a dish of butter atop olive oil
in case you can't decide which one you want
There are grilled oysters and beef tartare
but also other Long Island standards like zucchini and eggplant crisps ($17)
not as delicate as the ones at local Greek restaurants but still tasty
The most sophisticated item on the menu might be deviled eggs ($17)
which are stuffed with a wisp of smoked trout as well as its bright orange roe ..

drinks and apps might actually be the way to go here — more satisfying than the higher-priced entrées
A New England-style lobster roll is fabulous

A month earlier, a construction worker at the project site suffered a knee injury that Joy Construction failed to report, resulting in a violation and a $10,000 fine from DOB. According to Rockawave

Work is nearing completion on 35-01 Beach Channel Drive, an eight-story residential building in Far Rockaway
Designed by Bernheimer Architecture and developed by the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development
the 83-foot-tall structure will span 137,342 square feet and yield 138 rental units with an average scope of 707 square feet
as well as 5,173 square feet of commercial space
Twenty percent of the units will be designated as affordable housing
The property is bound by Beach Channel Drive
Recent photographs show the building almost fully clad in its façade of light- and dark-gray paneling and grid of windows with protruding teal frames
The majority of the punched windows are concentrated on the southern wing and northern elevation along Beach Channel Drive
while the other faces are less densely fenestrated
The structure’s two interlocking volumes culminate in flat parapets topped with roof decks and covered with photovoltaic canopies
Sidewalk scaffolding still surrounds the ground floor as work on the first story wraps up
and the hoist remains attached to the southwestern corner of the structure
Crews were seen installing stone façade panels on the first story along Beach Channel Drive
The photographs below show an aerial perspective of the southern side of the property
The below rendering from the construction board depicts the eastern end of the development
The ground floor appears to be clad in corrugated gray paneling
No additional renderings nor details about potential amenities have been released to date
as seen in the following Google Street View image from before excavation began
The development is located directly adjacent to the elevated Beach 36 Street station
35-01 Beach Channel Drive’s anticipated completion date is slated for January 2025
Some unfortunate Soviet vibes when looking at just one elevation
Hopefully it’s not seen most often that way
