Many Eastern York residents turned out Thursday night to oppose the school district’s restrictions on what pronouns LGBTQ+ students use
But the opinion of someone who doesn’t live in the Wrightsville-area district
appealed to the school board’s far-right majority
who represents the Red Lion area in the state House and lives in Windsor Township
warned the school board that Eastern York’s public schools would lose federal and state funding if they didn’t pass the anti-LGBTQ+ policy
“If you are allowing this to happen in your school
it goes against the executive order by the president that says this is no longer happening in your public school system,” Fink said
apparently referring to Donald Trump’s order recognizing male and female as the only two sexes
Trump’s order has had some real-world consequences
such as forcing nonbinary and transgender people to choose “M” or “F” when they renew their passports

But legal and medical experts say Trump’s order is grounded in a false understanding of biology and the law
“President Trump’s executive order on there only being two genders is basically like saying the government has announced that there are two types of cancer: breast and lung,” said Dr
professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine
Trump’s passport restrictions have already been challenged in court
although the American Civil Liberties Union has noted that it expects the administration to try to enforce the order in other contexts — including stripping federal funding for various programs
Any of those applications of the order would be unconstitutional
legal director at the ACLU of Massachusetts
“This is yet another example of the Trump administration attempting to deny the dignity of transgender people and trying to push them out of public life,” Rossman said
shortly after the passport lawsuit was filed in February

Eastern York’s school board has mulled various anti-LGBTQ+ policies
It has delayed its pronoun restrictions as members considered versions drafted for other school districts by the Harrisburg-based Independence Law Center
Christian law firm that’s promoted such policies at districts across York County
They also considered input from the district’s own solicitors
The pronoun policy was adopted in an 8-to-1 vote Thursday night
Like many other policies passed by far-right school board majorities in recent years
Eastern York’s requires parents to sign off on any difference between students’ pronouns and the sex that appears on their birth certificates
Even if a student receives their parents’ consent
the policy gives staff wide latitude to ignore those pronouns based on personal belief
Board President Doug Bailey was joined by members Bryan Fink
Bryan Walker and Richard Zepp in support of the policy
The only dissenting vote was cast by Crystal Bolton
It’s not clear if Bryan and Wendy Fink are related
Wendy Fink has appeared at events in support of the political action committee
although she doesn’t appear to hold a formal role with the organization
The PAC endorsed Wendy Fink for reelection last year
Outcry: When Wendy Fink initially stepped up to the microphone at Eastern York’s school board meeting Thursday
she faced outcry from some audience members who noted that she doesn’t live within the school district
she similarly spoke out at a Red Lion Area School Board meeting in support of that district’s anti-LGBTQ+ policies
After the board permitted Wendy Fink to speak
she warned that failing to adopt the pronoun restrictions risked losing federal funding — and that the state would not bail the district out
“[There is] no more to give to you,” she said
The board’s solicitor advised the board that local-level policies are not addressed in Trump’s executive order
Board members didn't respond to the solicitor's guidance
Wendy Fink did not respond to a request for comment Friday
Residents speak: The majority of Eastern York residents who spoke out Thursday night opposed the policy
you can’t do it,” Michelle Morningstar told the board
Morningstar said the policy encourages students and the larger community to bully kids
noting that she overheard one parent refer to a transgender child who performed in a recent school play as “it.”
“whether they’re choosing to wear female clothes
male clothes or whatever the hell they want to wear.”
Morningstar said there are more important things to focus on — including addressing bullying in the schools
Carissa Stoner told the board about how her son recently came out and was supported by his teachers
which resulted in his grades improving and more
“That all happened just because there was the ability to switch a name and a pronoun from one to another,” she said
“It really doesn’t matter how you look at a child.”
She said their vote on the policy is “very imperative” to her son’s safety in his father’s home
“What are you doing on a school board?” she asked them
“Go get a job at Sheetz if you really want to act like that.”
I ask that you consider the children who will be left behind by these ILC policies

Eastern York’s new version of its pronoun policy wasn’t drafted by the Independence Law Center
despite the far-right Christian law firm’s ubiquity in recent years
have openly discussed the ILC and its policies at previous meetings
the new version of the policy was drafted by Eastern York’s in-house solicitor
who serves on Wrightsville’s borough council
told the board to consider how they want to be remembered
as a board that sends children into “decaying
inequitable buildings while wasting taxpayer money on unnecessary policies that were implemented in secret warehouse meetings” or to make meaningful change that uplifts all students
Trump actions: Trump’s actions were previously cited by Rohrbaugh in advocating for Eastern York’s anti-LGBTQ+ policies
She’d originally wanted the board to move forward with the ILC’s version of the pronoun policy before the latest revisions by Stock and Leader
“We’re asking you to write a policy the way we want it written,” Rohrbaugh told the district’s solicitor at a meeting in November
Sabol said the firm’s job is to give the board legal advice and he was not going to comment on another firm’s policy that is used by other districts
Sabol also pointed out that religious exemption is the “legal standard.”
When Bailey asked Sabol if the other version of the policy violated Title IX
Sabol said “our position as a firm is that that is not in line.”
The school board has been considering this policy for several months
the policy has been yanked from the board’s agenda at the last minute
it was added back on the agenda the day before the meeting
During a March committee meeting, Lawson asked the board to take up a bathroom and athletics policy similar to the ones passed by Red Lion’s school board in 2023
She mentioned the “law firm that wrote that policy was PA Family.” Lawson was referencing the Independence Law Center
an affiliate of the Pennsylvania Family Institute
The next board meeting is scheduled at 6 p.m. on April 15 at 720 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville. The meetings can be attended in person or watched online through the district's YouTube channel

When YIMBY visited the site last August (as seen in the first photo above)
we found the structure topped-out and awaiting exterior cladding
we found the structure standing in apparently the same condition except that the chain link fence around the site has been removed and the lower level has been boarded up
These signs strongly suggest that this is more than just a short pause in construction and that development is currently on hold altogether
and the appearance of graffiti and advertisements on the structure and the boarding suggests that the project has persisted in ints current state for some time
YIMBY hopes to see a resumption of construction at the project in the near future

The Applebee's in East York is back with a new look
new ownership and a new line-up of late night and happy hour specials
It was damaged by a grease fire Sept. 25, 2024. Firefighters responded to the restaurant around 11:46 p.m.
battalion chief for York Area United Fire & Rescue
Three employees who were getting ready to leave for the night noticed a fire in the hood system of the kitchen area and called for help
"We had fire showing from the roof when we pulled up," Russ said
the eatery underwent a remodel after it was acquired by new ownership: The Rose Group
a franchise company in the Greater Philadelphia area

guests who visit during the month of April can enter to win free Applebee’s for a year (a $1,200 value)
Applebee's is located at 101 Northern Way, York and is open from 11 a.m
Happy hour offerings will feature drinks and snacks from 3 p.m
you can enjoy half price appetizers and drinks
but the first drive of Friday’s District 3 Class 4A quarterfinal clash between York-Adams Division II rivals West York and Eastern York was certainly a foreshadowing of what was to come at West York High School
After the visiting Golden Knights received the opening kickoff
the West York defense got a tackle for a loss on the game’s first play and a sack two plays later
That set up an Eastern punt from its own end zone that was blocked and recovered out of bounds by the Bulldogs
A charged-up West York crowd that was witnessing the program’s first District 3 playoff quarterfinal in a decade figured it was just the start of a big night for the Blue and White
it wasn’t the type of night that anyone on either sideline expected
A pair of field goals — one by each side — provided the only scoring over the final 46 minutes of action
the 5-3 triumph gave the West York boys and head coach Ron Miller a lot to celebrate as the Bulldogs (9-2) moved on to the semifinal round next week
“This whole thing is amazing,” a sweaty Miller said with a smile afterwards
A team that was 0-10 just a season ago has brought back the good old days
reminiscent of when Miller was regularly leading the Bulldogs to postseason success
Since Miller stepped away after the 2014 season to end a nine-year run
the once-proud program that owns three District 3 titles hadn't had too much to celebrate until Friday
“This season has been amazing,” senior quarterback Isaac Roberts said
“To go from 0-10 to now 9-2 and into the district semifinals … there’s no other feeling like it
It gets all of us excited and me especially (as one of four seniors)
I know the coaches are all really excited about this
YAIAA Week 12 playoff roundup: Delone Catholic wins district title over York Catholic
York-Adams League weekend scoreboard for Week 12
On a night in which the defenses reigned supreme — the two teams combined for 10 turnovers in the contest — Roberts provided most of what little offense the Bulldogs could muster
He ran the ball 30 times for 99 yards to help West York maintain possession for a majority of the contest
The Bulldogs couldn’t find much room against the Knights all evening
and when they did — like when Roberts scored an apparent 6-yard TD late in the fourth quarter — penalties negated the advances
The ball hardly left Eastern York territory in the first half
but West York had only five points to show for it
,” Miller said with exasperation in his voice
“We miss a wide-open guy in the middle of the field on a pass
We have great field position and then we get a holding and it’s first-and-20 now
"We’ve had a lot of first-down penalties throughout the year and I wonder
Or is it something we’re not doing as coaches?’ I don’t know
but it’s making these things a lot closer than I wish they would be,” he said
The Bulldogs tallied four sacks while forcing five Eastern York turnovers
who finished the regular season with the top-scoring offense in the York-Adams League
were limited to a mere 127 total yards and finished with minus-6 yards rushing
“The coaches do a good job with the defense at practice,” West York sophomore linebacker Daegan Trostel said
The Bulldogs were constantly getting pressure on the edges on nearly every Golden Knights play
While not one of the area’s bigger defenses in terms of size
the Bulldogs make up for that with a ton of speed
“I felt like we played aggressive,” junior linebacker Ibraheem Fuentes-Bream said
“We kind of play with a chip on our shoulders because I don’t think that there’s any other team in the county that compares with us defensively
We have a lot of young guys that stepped it up and we just go out and play with a high level of confidence.”
as the West York offense couldn’t find the end zone in 13 possessions
“The defense really kept us in the game,” Roberts said
The Bulldogs’ two biggest plays of the night came in the second half
starting with Roberts ripping off a 39-yard run that flipped the field position game in West York’s favor
There was also a 20-yard pass from Jensen Ferber to fellow freshman Janziel Torres that got the Bulldogs near midfield before an interception gave the Knights the ball back
That miscue — like many of West York’s five turnovers on the night — was erased quickly
as the defense held Eastern without a yard over three downs before a fourth-down sack reclaimed possession
“I just thought that we were going to get going and just go,” Miller said
“but we just couldn’t get the ball in the end zone.”
The Knights briefly took the lead early in the second quarter after their two biggest plays of the night offensively — a 39-yard catch and run by Draven Becknauld and a 25-yard reception by Nuh’si Valenti — brought them down to the West York 12
A pair of incompletions and a 3-yard loss moved Eastern back to the 15 before Landon Heiland connected on a 33-yard field goal to make it 3-2
Things could have quickly spiraled for the Bulldogs
as after an illegal shift penalty to start the ensuing drive
Roberts fumbled at the 24-yard line to give the Knights a prime chance to add to their lead
But much like the way things went all night
the West York defense responded immediately
with senior Wykeen Martin picking off a Quinn Bramble pass
The ensuing drive came close to the goal line before a 22-yard field goal by Tyler Koons made it 5-3 with 6:35 left in the half

Eastern York was seeking its first-ever playoff victory. Prior to consecutive appearances the last two years, the Knights had only reached districts twice as a program. Turnovers made the difference in a 29-23 loss at Milton Hershey in 2023
Coach Bud Kyle’s team will lose 11 seniors but return Bramble
While West York enjoyed the emotions of a hard-fought victory Friday night
Miller’s team will quickly turn its focus to the semifinals at No
on Saturday afternoon to set up a clash against the Bulldogs at 1 p.m
“We might be the last team standing from York County after next week
and if you would have told anybody that West York would be the last team standing in York County
nobody — and I mean nobody — would have believed you.”

Wendy Fink told the Eastern York school board Thursday night that the district would lose federal funding if it did not pass an anti-LGBTQ+ policy that restricts pronoun use
"I assure you that if this policy and the other policies that you are considering tonight are not passed
lose your funding," she said during the public comment period
Fink told the board not to assume the state is going to make up for the lost federal funding because there is "no more money." She urged the elected leaders to consider whether the district can afford it
Her comments prompted boos and a commotion from the audience
A board member asked why the district would lose funding
Fink replied that it would go against an executive order issued by the president
but President Donald Trump recently signed one that only recognizes two sexes — male and female
The district and a parent must go through steps to develop a gender accommodation plan for a student to use a preferred name and pronoun
district staff are not required to use names and pronouns that violate their religious beliefs or "unconstitutional compelled speech."

Keychain and trinket exchange boards originally started in Portland, Or., from the work of an American visual artist named Mike Bennett.

The exchange board is not only about discovering new items, it also aims to bring joy to the community.

Visitors get excited to see the board, take photos, or let the community know about the board.
“It has made us so happy to see that it brings others so much joy,” said Barrett.

After the board was created in the summer, Amanda and her kids have been going out nearly every day, looking for their newest addition.
On their Instagram account, the board is promoted through a series of posts or reels. The posts mostly showcase new keychain additions. The account currently has 134 followers on Instagram, with frequent users commenting on posts.

“It needs doors,” Barrett said
Barrett’s board has been getting lots of attention on social media

People have gotten out of their cars solely to take pictures of the board
The success of the exchange board has overjoyed Barrett

There are shops you walk into that just seem to pause time — the lighting
the quiet sound of people thumbing through books or flipping through a stack of records
and the friendly conversations you catch every once in a while
The popularity of used bookstores and collectibles shops in East York is proof that people are able to find community in the places they visit and the things they consume
“I think the people who live here and the people who shop here support the fact that we’re not owned by some big corporation,” said Christopher Sheedy
at the corner of Donlands and Sammon Avenues
a store that resells collectible toys and records
“I think this will go as an ongoing business because
a sense of community,” said Cameron Stannard
but it’s kind of a niche market for everyone.”
he notices at least half of his customers are under the age of 25
And he says neighbours shopping local contribute to each other’s success
“We’re people who work and live in the neighbourhood and support the neighbourhood,” he said
“Because we also shop at each other’s stores
there’s a community in that way of mutual support.”
The 2022 Canadian Book Consumer survey by BookNet Canada shows that 23 per cent of the participants chose to shop in independent bookstores to support their community
18 per cent of the time just to browse books to pass time
used bookstores were the only way I could afford to read
I always thought that would be a cool job to have
and it would be even better if I owned it,” he said
When discussing what sets his shop apart from increasingly popular online shopping
“I think the physicality of it and the relationship that we have with our customers — where people can come in and ask for ‘I really like this kind of book and what can you can you suggest?’ — Amazon doesn’t have that,” Sheedy said
demand for collectibles in the region goes beyond just collecting
so it kind of forms a sense of community,” he said
so there’s something for people that are five and people that are 50,” he said
“That’s why I think it’s a shop for everyone and that’s why it’s withstanding the test of time,” Stannard said
Three candidates in the Beaches–East York provincial riding squared off on the debate stage on Feb
The debate took place at Kingston Road United Church and was moderated by Beach Metro Community News and the Balmy Beach Residents Association
The candidates present were Liberal and most recent Member of Provincial Parliament for the riding
the NDP’s Kate Dupuis and the Green Party’s Jack Pennings
Conservative candidate Anna Michaelidis did not attend the debate, having informed the organizers ahead of time she would be unable to
and Dupuis made note of that in her opening statement
“You’ll notice our Conservative colleague didn’t even come to be with us here tonight,” Dupuis said
“This election is an opportunity to elect an MPP who will work as hard as you do
an MPP who will put the priorities of the people before the well-connected and their pals and the super rich.”
All three candidates tabled their respective party’s plan to make housing more affordable for Torontonians
“Ontario is woefully behind in housing starts,” McMahon said
“So [the Liberals are] going to cut development charges
eliminate the provincial land transfer tax for first-time homebuyers
McMahon also mentioned a need to build more “affordable
but didn’t say how many homes the Liberals plan on building
something both the NDP and Green candidates did
The Liberals also plan on introducing a Better Communities Fund to help municipalities cover infrastructure costs, according to their platform
According to the Canadian Housing and Mortgage Corporation data quoted by the Smart Prosperity Institute in Ottawa, “Ontario started 13,000 fewer homes from January to October 2024 than in the same period in the previous year
as opposed to the rest of Canada starting 14,000 more homes.”
has an incredible plan to address housing at various levels,” Dupuis said
we must build homes: our plan includes building 1.5 million homes within the first decade upon taking government.”
According to the NDP platform
this will be primarily accomplished through Homes Ontario
Pennings and the Greens put forth an even more ambitious plan:
“The Green Party’s plan is to attempt to build two million homes
and do so by building all within existing urban boundaries,” said Pennings
“That’s going to be accomplished by permitting fourplexes everywhere in Ontario
sixplexes in cities over half a million [people]
and buildings with a storey limit of 11 along the major transit corridors.”
The Greens also plan on eliminating the land transfer tax for first-time homebuyers
The candidates also discussed the effects of Conservative Party Leader and most-recent Premier Doug Ford’s education cuts and creative solutions towards spending on education
“It’s roughly $1,500 per student that has been cut by the PCs,” Pennings said
“And that is the exact amount that the Green Party promises to restore for each student.”
According to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives
the “Planning Provision” in Ontario’s Core Education Funding – which refers to money that isn’t allocated for a specific purpose and isn’t truly available to school boards – was up to $1.39 billion
which accounts for 4.85 per cent of the 2024-25 Core Ed allocation and does work out to a shortfall of $1,500 per student
Some actions the Green Party plans to take
implementing class size limits and hiring more teaching assistants
The NDP also touched on Ford’s cuts to education
“Just here in the TDSB (Toronto District School Board)
if we adjust for inflation and compare back to 2018
the Ford government has taken $15 million out of our schools,” Dupuis said
In the 2023-24 school year, the TDSB reported a total funding gap of $201 million
“The first creative solution is to fund school boards
for the ministry of education to actually put money back into our schools.”
McMahon said her party would “absolutely” invest in education
The Liberal platform mentions plans to double annual capital funding for schools
build 90 new schools over the next four years and expand funding
eligibility and flexibility for the Safe Schools Grant program
The PCs plan on investing $1.3 billion more to build 30 new schools and 15 school expansions across Ontario, according to their platform
Beaches–East York voters who attended the debate said they found all three candidates appealing
a 79-year-old retiree living in Beaches–East York
Bockus said each of the candidates’ platforms were fairly well-defined
“They’re close to each other on green issues,” Bockus said
The candidates seem to have a pretty good grasp on where those issues affect the community; they’re obviously in touch with what the community needs
especially in terms of more money on schools
more money on housing and density issues.”
Bockus said he hopes the candidates remain focused on the issues they talked about in the debate
For 66-year-old retired gardener and landscaper
she was “no clearer” leaving the debate than she was entering it
“They broadened my knowledge as to themselves individually,” Vanderreest said
Vanderreest said she wasn’t surprised Michaelidis was a no-show at the debate
“I was not surprised that the PC candidate did not show up,” said Vanderreest
I’m glad it gave more time to the other three to speak their piece.”
