Before tourists and traffic, and long before clam shacks and ice cream parlors, 19th century essayist, naturalist and thinker Henry David Thoreau walked Cape Cod’s outer shoreline — marveling at the shipwrecks
dunes and the salt-weathered locals who made a life there
Nate D. Sanders Auctions
completed the sale on April 24 to an anonymous Massachusetts buyer
is included with a 10-volume set of the 1906 manuscript edition of "The Writings of Henry David Thoreau," published by Houghton Mifflin
each featuring a two-page original manuscript bound into the first volume
The recently auctioned set with Thoreau's observations about Eastham is number 326
"The manuscript offers a rare window into Thoreau’s creative process
and additions — hallmarks of his precise and contemplative writing method," the auction house notes in an April 28 press release
the manuscript includes observations that later appeared in Thoreau’s "Cape Cod," published in 1865 — two years after his death
The auction took place just days shy of the 163rd anniversary of Thoreau’s death on May 6
In the manuscript — 10.25'' x 8.5'' unfolded — Thoreau describes the Eastham landscape
noting it was starkly different from the familiar terrain of his inland home in Concord
"All sands are here called 'beaches,' whether they are waves of water or of air
since they commonly have their origin on the shore," the manuscript reads
"The sand in some places,' says the historian of Eastham
has been raised into hills fifty feet high
where twenty-five years ago no hills existed..
look as if they were recently dug from a quarry.'"
Thoreau: 'Great crops of corn' in EasthamThoreau also expressed surprise "to hear of the great crops of corn which are still raised in Eastham
notwithstanding the real and apparent barrenness..."
In 2020: Friends walk 27 miles in Thoreau's Cape Cod footsteps ... by accident
Thoreau is best known for his books "Walden" and “Civil Disobedience." Through his writings
a blend of self-reflection and insightful observations of nature and society
he encouraged people to connect with the natural world
he walked along much of the outermost Cape
"Cape Cod," contains reflections from his treks
and the unique challenges of life on the Cape

Wild Care staff in Eastham reported to USDA Wildlife Services the discovery of a dead raccoon on Smith Road in Eastham
Healthy raccoons do not typically approach porcupines
so immediately upon discovery the raccoon was suspected to be rabid
It is important to note that porcupines are not common on Cape Cod
Wildlife experts suspect any porcupine sightings within the last 15 or so years are due to accidental translocation
a juvenile porcupine was thought to come over on a shipment of Christmas trees in 2009
it is likely that this raccoon was transported to Eastham from another location where it had contact with the porcupine
While it is illegal to translocate wild animals, officials encourage anyone with information about this raccoon and its area of origin to contact Brian Bjorklund, Cape Cod and Southeast Massachusetts Rabies Program Coordinator, at (413) 537-9394 or send an email to CARE@capecod.gov
It is essential to rabies control efforts on Cape Cod that officials understand the raccoon’s origins and story
and how it died are critical to remediation and prevention efforts
Any individual who may have touched or interacted with the animal should consult a physician regarding post-exposure prophylaxis as soon as possible
Rabies is a serious viral disease that affects the brain and spinal cord of mammals
The virus is transmitted via direct contact with saliva (most commonly through a bite or scratch but can also enter broken skin or mucous membranes in the eyes
or mouth) or brain/nervous system tissue from an infected animal
the disease can be prevented by getting appropriately treated after exposure; otherwise
The animals that most commonly carry rabies in Massachusetts are raccoons
Additional guidance is available at Rabies educational materials and additional resources | Mass.gov. Updates will be provided as further information becomes available. Questions from concerned citizens should be directed to CARE@capecod.gov

Voters could hand Eastham land for stormwater mitigation, a wastewater pumping station and the repair and/or redevelopment of condominiums for housing with just one article, 4D, at the annual town meeting
Eastham currently owns two of four condominium units in two adjacent buildings on State Highway 6
The Selectboard wants to acquire the other two units (2845 and 2825) and the property they sit on
purchase or eminent domain,” according to the warrant
Costs incidental to the acquisition are pegged at $850,000
The land has been identified as a site for housing
stormwater remediation and a future wastewater pumping station
Here's a look at what else is on the Eastham town meeting warrant for May 5
Article 5A calls for accepting a “Seasonal Community Designation,” which would give Eastham tools to address its housing crisis
according to Town Manager Jacqueline Beebe
The town would be able to develop housing with preference for municipal workers
and allow an increase in the residential tax exemption limits
“We’re looking for more year-round housing
period,” Beebe said at an April 22 Selectboard meeting dedicated to the 2025 town meeting warrant
Voters could grant the Selectboard approval to ask for special legislation that would allow up to 3% real estate transfer fees on purchases over $1 million with Article 6A
The money would be a funding source for housing programs
Similar language was in the Affordable Homes Act before being withdrawn
Passage of the article would add Eastham to a list of 19 other municipalities requesting this legislative action
Operating budgetThe proposed operating budget of $45,698,949 is an increase of 2.74% ($1,218,894) over the FY25 budget
It’s expected to increase real estate taxes $116 (2.1%) for the median valued home ($750,458.) The annual tax burden on that home would be approximately $5,733
Real estate taxes would increase by about $116 (2.1%) for the median valued home ($750,458)
is $550,000 for town-wide HVAC replacement
Finance Director and Assistant Town Manager Rich Bienvenue said years of deferred maintenance and significant need in both the police and fire stations are reasons for the ask
Bienvenue hopes to supplement the cost with a Green Communities Grant which the town will apply for in the fall
Articles 7A and 7B: Zoning changesTwo amendments (Articles 7A and 7B) to Eastham’s zoning bylaws will ensure that zoning reflects the vision for town properties
One article calls for amending the Eastham Corridor Special District; the other for making ADU guidelines consistent with the state’s guidelines
Town meeting will be at Nauset Regional High School on May 5 at 5:30 p.m. For more information on the warrant, go to https://www.eastham-ma.gov/709/Town-Meeting

The Eastham Planning Board will recommend that Town Meeting adopt zoning changes in the Eastham Corridor Special District that officials say would align with the town's strategic plan for creating a walkable
The board voted 4-1 on Wednesday to make the recommendation to adopt form-based code
"Broadly the vision for the North Eastham Business District is live
If you follow the recipe the regulatory process should be quicker
Form-based codes specify what is acceptable for building footprint
site access and curb cuts are laid out in charts and tables
Lagg likened the codes to a cookbook for property owners
The Eastham Corridor Special District includes Route 6 from Old Orchard Road to the Wellfleet line, including Brackett Road from Massasoit to the Cape Cod Rail Trail
Lagg presented a diagram of the Special District with different neighborhoods in colored patches
Potential streets were shown running from the end of Holmes Road to Route 6 near the Four Points Sheraton Hotel
Another potential road was shown going from Brackett Road to the T-Time parcel with offshoots on to Route 6
Attorney Ben Zehnder cautioned the board that allowing higher density
multi-family housing in the trade park neighborhood of Holmes Road would create problems between residents and business owners
“You'll create a fundamental incompatibility in the district,” he said
will be living next to some noisy businesses that use power and air tools
Zehnder said tradesmen were already being squeezed for business space in the Outer Cape
HVAC and auto mechanics had bays in the Holmes Road area and that if the area were opened up to possible multi-family housing development
they would be forced to find space closer to mid-Cape
five small businesses and they won’t have a place to operate."
A need for housing in EasthamLagg said he is keenly aware of the need for trade space
but that the town is trying to balance it with the enormous housing need
He said there is a lot of untapped potential and land on Holmes Road
“If you shut this door to multi-family housing
you’ll run out of places to put it,” Chairman Daniel Coppelman said
Brian Earley was the lone 'no' vote on the recommendation
The board was unanimous in its recommendation that ADU bylaw amendments be approved at town meeting
Lagg said the town is waiting on the state for clarity on some issues and language
He said the Attorney General’s office would examine the bylaws before town meeting and Eastham’s bylaw would be subject to any changes made by that office
An Eastham woman was indicted in federal court in western Pennsylvania in connection with a $4.5 million international lottery scam targeting older people, according to the office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Western Pennsylvania
Nicole Lamont
was indicted on March 27 on one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering
Three other people related to the scam were indicted
The most recent charges are related to those announced in December 2023 naming seven other co-conspirators
three of whom were extradited from Jamaica
Those seven were indicted on charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud
Lamont and others are alleged to be members of a fraud scheme that stole more than $4.5 million from older people in western Pennsylvania and other parts of the U.S.
telling them they won million- or multi-million dollar sweepstakes
and would have to pay a tax or fee to claim their prize
The money was moved to multiple banks before being withdrawn by members of the conspiracy living in Jamaica
Forged documents used by members of the scheme sometimes included seals of government agencies
The maximum sentence for Lamont and other member of the scheme is up to 20 years in prison
or a fine up to twice the amount lost by any victim

A crowd gathered Saturday along Route 6 outside the entrance to the Cape Cod National Seashore’s Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham to protest layoffs at the National Park Service last month, including some at the Seashore
It was part of a nationwide protest against federal cuts by President Donald Trump that amounted to about 1,000 National Park Service employees
The Seashore brings millions of visitors — and their wallets — to its beaches, bike trails and interpretative programs each summer. According to a 2023 report by the National Park Service
3.8 million visitors spent $533 million in communities near the park
The park typically hires seasonal workers to handle the surge of visitors. The jobs can include rangers, lifeguards, fee collectors, shorebird researchers, maintenance and tram drivers
The Seashore typically likes to hire 42 to 50 lifeguards
including shutting down the United States Agency for International Development and taking steps to do the same to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
Trump has also discussed trying to eliminate the Department of Education
After a buyout offer was accepted by fewer federal employees than expected
tens of thousands of federal workers on probation have already been laid off
These probationary workers include employees in their first year or two on the job
people who have recently moved between federal agencies and people who were recently promoted
The firings have affected all 50 states and include employees at agencies that Americans frequently interact with
National Institutes of Health and many others
Cape Cod National Seashore includes over 43,000 acres in Chatham, Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown across nearly 40 miles of coastline along the Atlantic-facing eastern shore of Cape Cod, according to the Friends of the Cape Cod National Seashore website

A 35-year-old Rochester man faces charges following a police chase that ended in a 30-minute standoff in Eastham
Massachusetts State Police answered a call around 10 p.m. on Sunday from the Rochester Police Department
for a man driving a Toyota Tundra in possession of multiple firearms
State police tracked the man in his vehicle to Route 28 in Dennis and attempted to pull him over. Police chased the truck briefly, but officers ended it when the truck entered a congested area, according to a statement from the state police. The truck continued on Route 28 toward Harwich, and police deployed a helicopter to provide additional information from the sky about the man's specific movements
Orleans police punctured a tire of the Rochester man's vehicle with a "tire deflation device." After continuing to drive "at a low rate of speed for a short time" the man attempted to flee by foot near Eves Way and Great Pond Road in Eastham
Police chased the man for approximately 100 yards before a 30-minute standoff
which ended with the man being taken into custody
Police said they recovered a pistol and two shotguns
A statement on the Eastham police Facebook page said the man got out of his car "brandishing a firearm."
"Despite the danger posed by the man pointing a firearm at himself and police
troopers and officers de-escalated the situation by engaging him in conversation," according to the press release
The man was experiencing "a known mental health crisis," according to the Eastham police Facebook post
The man is facing charges of three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon
There were no injuries or damages to property
however the man was taken to a local hospital

Where did the dead raccoon come from? That somewhat peculiar question is a matter of high concern for public health officials, after the deceased animal, found on the side of Smith Lane in Eastham on Nov. 17, tested positive for rabies
The curious circumstances around the discovery of the animal have led officials to believe the raccoon may have been transported to Eastham
Anyone who came into contact with the raccoon may have been exposed to rabies, a viral disease that is "almost 100% fatal" without appropriate treatment, according to a release from the Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment
"any individual who may have touched or interacted with the animal should consult a physician regarding post-exposure prophylaxis as soon as possible."
Officials also want to understand more about the raccoon's origin
and how it died are critical to remediation and prevention efforts."
They are seeking information from anyone who knows more about the incident
The animal was discovered near the entrance to Wild Care of Cape Cod
a wildlife rehabilitation center in Eastham
the raccoon had porcupine quills in its muzzle and arms and "a blue cloth had been draped over its backside."
The porcupine quills are a clue that the raccoon may have come from off-Cape
"Porcupines are not common on Cape Cod," the release stated
"Wildlife experts suspect any porcupine sightings within the last 15 or so years are due to accidental translocation
a juvenile porcupine was thought to come over on a shipment of Christmas trees in 2009."
This makes an encounter between the raccoon and a porcupine less likely on Cape Cod, said Brian Bjorklund, coordinator of the Cape Cod and Southeast Massachusetts Rabies Program
"I suspect it ended up in someone's car," said Bjorklund
Bjorklund also added that the quills were an early indicator that the raccoon had contracted rabies
because healthy raccoons steer clear of porcupines
According to the release, raccoon variant rabies "has not been detected on Cape Cod since 2021 when a rabies positive raccoon was discovered in Hyannis. That animal was found to have originated in Plymouth
the last case of raccoon variant rabies on Cape Cod was in 2013."
A DNA sample was taken from the dead raccoon
which may allow officials to pinpoint where it came from
Those results may be available before Thanksgiving
Officials are encouraging anyone with information about the raccoon and where it came from to contact Bjorklund at 413-537-9394 or send an email to CARE@capecod.gov

Mr. and Mrs. Turnip, whom you may know from past years at Eastham Turnip Festival
have been visiting more than two dozen restaurants ― each of which is cooking up a special turnip dish for this year’s celebration on Saturday
Each of the Eastham or Orleans eateries will prepare a special on that day that uses Eastham turnip
This year’s list of special dishes is not yet posted
but you can work up an appetite looking at last year’s specialties
which included everything from Basco Grill’s “Turnip Fritters with Roasted Garlic & Fig Dipping Sauce” to The Local Scoop’s pints of “Eastham Cranberry Swirl.” (Their maple-turnip ice cream has been a hit at other Turnip Fests.)
There were more than a dozen savory dishes
from Fairway Restaurant & Pizzeria’s “Turnip and Sweet Potato Croquettes” to Mac’s Market & Kitchen’s “Jamaican Coconut Curry Turnip.” And baked goods
Cheddar and Eastham Turnip Croissant,” Cottage Street Bakery’s turnip scones and Brine’s “Turnip
Rosemary and Peppercorn Focaccia” were on hand to entice visitors with their delicate aromas
Who knew a root vegetable ― even a famous root vegetable like the Eastham turnip ― could be the root of so many wonderful dishes
What is the history of Eastham Turnip Festival? The annual festival began in 2003 when then-Eastham assistant librarian Patricia Ford and her colleagues came up with the idea for a celebration of Eastham’s produce
The choice came down to asparagus or turnip
“I am personally grateful that they decided to focus on the turnip because you can turn a quip (with) the name turnip
It’s hard to find a word that rhymes with asparagus,” the festival’s chairman Marianne Sinopoli told the Cape Cod Times last year as Eastham Turnip Festival celebrated its 20th year
The annual Eastham Turnip Festival is a not-for-profit group run by the Eastham Public Library
Friends of the Eastham Public Library and volunteers
The festival began at Nauset Regional High School but moved because of a construction project and concerns over crowds during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic
Where is the 2024 Eastham Turnip Festival? The fun unfolds at a few locations
with most activities kicking off at 10 a.m
Cathy Hatch and the Cape Cod Ukulele Club will play; GBH transportation reporter and Cape resident Bob Seay will deliver the Blessing of the Turnips
there is a full slate of activities including face painting
shopping for turnip cookbooks and t-shirts and more
New this year will be harvest-themed offerings and entertainment spotlighting the Mashpee Wampanoag: Wampanoag Nation singers and dancers will have a live interactive performance at 2:30 p.m.; from noon to 3 p.m.
there will be Wampanoag make-and-take crafts
including wampum pendants and corn husk dolls
There will also be a StoryWalk on the grounds of the library featuring “Keepunumuk: Weeâchumun’s Thanksgiving Story” by Danielle Greendeer
Jungle Jim’s Balloon & Magic Show is at 10:30 a.m.
and children can read to Hearts and Paws Comfort Dogs from 11:30 a.m
Turnip fest organizers have teamed up with the Eastham Historical Society at 2375 State Highway (the Swift-Daley House)
“Mark Herman will fire up the historic forge and give demonstrations
Farming implements from bygone years will be exhibited and folks can bring in their old tools for identification and appraisals,” according to an announcement from Turnip Fest organizers
believed to be the oldest and last working gristmill on Cape Cod
Chat with a miller about the windmill’s role in Eastham’s agricultural history
What is the history of the Eastham turnip? The Eastham turnip
with a lighter color than many of its three dozen yellow-fleshed cousins
is an heirloom variety that has seen its seeds passed down for more than a century
meaning seeds formed by fertilized flowers produce the same plant the following year
Many in town credit Arthur Nickerson with guarding the health and quality of Eastham turnips
sweet white turnips with purple tops he grew on and off from boyhood to his death continue to be a part of his rich legacy in town
sandy soil for turning out champion turnips
you can find Eastham turnips at a half-dozen places mostly on the Lower Cape
A list on the Eastham Turnip Festival website includes: Orleans Farmers Market

takes a sip of his tea and starts a journey in his head
He is in a Cape Town bar in 2019 thinking about the High Court in London in 1963
alongside Christine Keeler as the Profumo scandal raged
They were shaking the Establishment and George Eastham was in the dock
“I honestly couldn’t tell you if the galleries were packed or not
Those last four words do not really do justice to the scale of the subject matter or its consequences
George Eastham had just changed the world of football forever by successfully challenging the retain-and-transfer system in place since the turn of the 20th century
George Eastham was Jean-Marc Bosman — 32 years before Bosman
Not that this 83-year-old in South Africa considers himself in these terms at the minute
and recovery has been occupying his thoughts
But there is a book placed in front of him called Determined To Win and that is what Eastham is
The second paragraph contains these three sentences:
“The crucial fact was that the contracts signed by the 2700 members of the Professional Footballers’ Association were illegal
“So was the system which tied them to the clubs when their contracts had ended
a ‘New Deal’ for footballers was at hand.”
It may astonish the modern football society that into the 1960s
one-year rolling contracts of a maximum £20 per week and when clubs decided not to re-sign them
This wait was often endured on the minimum wage
it was up to the parent club to decide whether to retain the player or release him
clubs were able to maintain 50-strong squads
Professional football was a Football League
“We’ll put you out of the game,” was clubs’ attitude towards players they regarded as troublesome
the football transfer and retainer system is an anachronism that should be wiped out now,” wrote Welsh international Trevor Ford in 1957
Ford called the system “depraved” and said: “I know the soccer public is as disgusted as the players over this slave trade.”
Ford’s words give an indication of the language
mood and anger surrounding contracts and club directors’ abuse of their authority and economic position
On the recommendation of the latter’s chief scout Bill McCracken
Newcastle paid £9,000 for Eastham in May 1956
the man whose performances for Newcastle forced a change in the offside law in 1925
“I was too young to know who he was or what he had been
I was earning £1.50 at Ards and someone wanted to give me a tenner
“I’d played for the Irish League against the English League and that was a big moment in my career
I don’t know how I managed to cope against men — I played against Jackie Milburn in the Irish League
But I’ve recently seen some photographs of me when I was 16 and I looked like nothing — nothing
He was also elusive and a fine passer of the ball
Eastham was clearly an up-and-coming player and Arsenal regretted their previous hesitation and by 1959 again wanted to buy him
But Newcastle had treated Eastham — and his father — shabbily and for that
James’ Park and at the end of the 1959-60 season
As Newcastle United fumed, Eastham moved south to Surrey to sell cork for a businessman friend of his father’s — Ernie Clay, later Fulham chairman
Eastham would wait until his situation was resolved
It seems barely credible given his profile and that of the two clubs involved
he sounds pretty pleased with his up-yours diversion:“I went and got a job in London selling cork for months while all the arguments went on
I started playing for the ‘Showbiz XI’ and in local parks
Newcastle said: ‘You can’t play in parks or for the Showbiz XI.’
“I said: ‘Watch me.’ I was playing with Sean Connery
I think they said: ‘Put an end to this.’ Newcastle said: ‘OK
“There was little doubt that I was running the risk of outlawing myself from the game forever,” he says
efforts at negotiation had failed but in November 1960
Newcastle accepted Arsenal’s £47,500 offer
It was the most expensive transfer between two British clubs and 9,000 Arsenal fans turned up to see Eastham’s first game for the reserves
He made his full Highbury debut in December 1960 and remained there until 1966
Along the way, he became Arsenal’s captain and like his father, became an international. They were, in fact, the first father and son to play for England
George Jnr’s first cap came in May 1963 at Wembley against Brazil
He had made the squad for the 1962 World Cup finals but did not play; against Brazil
The date of other significance was looming
he was asked by the PFA if he would legally challenge Newcastle over unpaid wages and bonuses and
the retain-and-transfer system as a restraint of trade
It took three years but as June turned into July in 1963
he was at the Royal Courts of Justice in London fighting his corner
The Newcastle United vice-chairman was William McKeag
McKeag was rather more at ease in the High Court than Eastham and 56 years on
a rotund little man who’d done lots of criminal cases
he might have been big in the law but he’d nothing about him
“The PFA had come and asked me how I felt about going to court
“The system didn’t get discussed that much [among players] because there was no way round it
You signed a contract and the contract was ongoing
You signed the next one and then the next one
“We did feel like it but we didn’t talk about it all the time in those terms
We got to a stage where they gave us a pound a thousand over 30,000
so you were happy but not every club did it.”
What equally infuriated players was the patronising and proprietorial attitude directors displayed towards them. Clubs also owned the houses players lived in, so when a player was no longer wanted, the house was taken back. This happened to Eastham’s uncle, Harry, who had played for Liverpool and was at Accrington late in his career
Ford said the maximum wage and benefit cap led to myriad corrupt practices and pressure from players such as him and Eastham and Jimmy Hill led
In the timeline of the development of English football
“Some wrote I was doing the wrong thing,” Eastham says
A man like Finney carried influence but the union fought on
“Cliff Lloyd of the PFA and Gerald Gardiner
The case was scheduled to last a week and the judge chosen was Richard Wilberforce
He was the great-great grandson of William Wilberforce
the anti-slavery activist and abolitionist
I think the legal team were very pleased to hear his name
As he said in his book: “I was no longer George Eastham
an ordinary chap who believed in fair play and a square deal for his family
I was a symbol of every professional footballer
I was representing everyone from Jimmy Greaves down to some unknown in Barrow’s reserve team
The court would judge them all from my demeanour in the witness box.”
Judge Wilberforce delivered a 16,000-word conclusion
Eastham lost his claim for unpaid wages but the retain-and-transfer system
was declared a restraint of trade and illegal
the Daily Mirror’s split front page contained Eastham and Keeler
The headline in the Newcastle Journal was: “Eastham ‘Frees The Slaves’”
The authorities did not react kindly and planned to appeal
McKeag’s verdict was typical of the director class: “The judgment will affect soccer wherever it is played
It makes chaos of 50 years’ experience of trying to frame football rules
this will throw football into the cockpit of the marketplace.”
Some major players gradually earned more – their market worth – but there were plenty still treated with financial disdain by clubs
Nor was Eastham seen as some freedom fighter by his peers
Included in Alf Ramsey’s 1966 World Cup squad
though this does not appear to frustrate him as much as ’62
“That England team of ’66 still stay together,” he says
a shrewdie; knew how far to let you off the leash
We’re looking at each other thinking: ‘10 o’clock
“Then you’d go to your room and on your bed was your passport
He had played almost 600 top-flight matches
then joined Tony Waddington as assistant manager and as Stoke endured economic hardship
where his father had coached and where he had played briefly in the off-season
It was an all-white league he first encountered but it was soon mixed and Eastham
“I played with black and white all my career.”
They will have no inkling of his importance
As he says: “People didn’t believe it when Newcastle sold me for £47,000
There is a group who fully recognise George Eastham — the lawyers and union who represented Jean-Marc Bosman three decades after Eastham’s breakthrough
“but you never know if it’s going to be right or wrong legally
Bosman and myself were recognised as instigators by FIFPRO (the international players’ union)
“The legal people knew what we did and what had to be done
The legal profession did know what it was all about
We got a small memento with the lawyers’ names on
the man who altered football’s and footballers’ reality feels the cold of late afternoon
He readies himself to leave but is drawn back one more time to his father — whose dribbling talent was described as “freakish” — and to his debut for Ards
“We played on the same side: him inside forward
awaiting Eastham Jnr in the dressing room was his pay
