will begin this summer The City of Everett will close Mukilteo Boulevard to replace the 78-year-old Edgewater Bridge that has reached the end of its useful life The bridge is currently safe for daily use but operates under weight restrictions and was determined to be vulnerable to failure in an earthquake “The Edgewater Bridge is an essential connection between Everett and Mukilteo so I’m very glad the replacement will start soon,” said Everett Mayor Cassie Franklin “I want to thank Representative Rick Larsen for being a tireless advocate for the infrastructure investments Everett needs to ensure our resiliency create more jobs and keep people and our economy moving.” While the new bridge is constructed Mukilteo Boulevard will be closed for approximately 12 months and bicyclists will need to find alternate east-west routes for travel between Everett and Mukilteo “The new bridge is a long-term investment in our transportation system and will provide a safe connection between our communities for years to come,” said Ryan Sass “We know this project will be an inconvenience for residents of our region but rest-assured that we are taking every step possible to keep the project moving forward and on schedule The greater inconvenience to our community would be the failure of the bridge in an earthquake.” There are three major bridges along Mukilteo Boulevard that are within Everett city limits Engineering assessments of the bridges determined that two of the three would be vulnerable in a major earthquake and need replacement If two of the three bridges along West Mukilteo Boulevard were lost in a major earthquake portions of several neighborhoods could be completely isolated with no road access in or out The City of Everett incorporated community input into the design of the bridge The bridge straddles the border of Everett and Mukilteo and will welcome travelers into both cities the new bridge will include wider sidewalks and bike lanes on each side of the road portions of Edgewater Park will be used for construction staging The park will be renovated once the new bridge is complete To learn more about the Edgewater Bridge Replacement, visit Visnauskas today announced the start of construction on a $2.5 million project to improve resiliency at Edgewater Park funded through HCR’s Office of Resilient Homes and Communities (RHC) will allow Edgewater Park’s volunteer firehouse and community center which is also a polling place during elections to serve as a shelter during extreme weather events.  “Our $2.5 million investment will fund essential upgrades to the Edgewater Park facility ensuring the firehouse and community center remains a vital link in the emergency response chain and an asset to the surrounding neighborhood As New York is impacted more and more by the effects of climate change our work to improve the resiliency of communities and keep residents safe will take on even greater importance.”  The Edgewater Park project will include:   The upgrades will ensure that the facility can function as a shelter during major storms and as a cooling center during extreme heat The measures at the volunteer firehouse also improve the Edgewater Park’s emergency preparedness Many of the Fire Department of New York’s (FDNY) emergency vehicles are too big to navigate Edgewater Park’s small streets which often requires the volunteer firehouse to provide essential first response.   “I am delighted to hear about this project finally underway I know the people of Edgewater Park have been waiting patiently and will rightfully be able to have proper accommodations with these resiliency updates to the firehouse/community center facilities “The long-term recovery of Edgewater Park has been stalled for years the long-awaited repairs will finally happen it is more vulnerable and   requires special attention This project will provide much-needed upgrades to benefit the community during emergencies,” said Council Member Marjorie Velázquez “Resiliency projects have become necessary and essential to protecting our waterfront neighborhoods I look forward to the Edgewater Park community getting the support they’ve longed for and will continue working with Governor Hochul to ensure they are not forgotten.”  “The Edgewater Park community is proud to be working with NYS RHC on the much anticipated and certainly needed upgrades to our Volunteer Firehouse to make it a relief center that serves not only the 675 homes in our Park but the surrounding areas as well.”  Governor Kathy Hochul announced the creation of the Office of Resilient Homes and Communities (RHC) which assumed the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery’s portfolio GOSR was established as a temporary agency in 2013 to coordinate statewide recovery efforts for Superstorm Sandy the agency is also coordinating long term recovery and resiliency efforts for Hurricane Ida.  RHC is also partnering with the State's disaster-response agencies to lead New York’s recovery and resiliency efforts and develop a pipeline of resiliency initiatives and strategies across the State.    There’s been a lot of water under the I-69 bridge since Harris County acquired the old privately owned Edgewater Park on the San Jacinto West Fork almost five years ago The county intended to start construction of a new bigger The idea: turn floodway and floodplain land into an asset that would improve the community without exacerbating flooding Reportedly, however, pushback from Forest Cove residents over rerouting parts of Hamblen Road delayed the project. Then the City of Houston pushed back, too, on permitting for some buildings. Then came redistricting wars, budget battles and a public-input session to determine what the community wants in Edgewater Park Let’s first look at some pictures of the park and then review the new features Edgewater Park will cover most of the land you see in the picture below between the river and that concrete patch in the upper middle (Laurel Springs RV Resort) Construction still hasn’t started and the County is rethinking its plans for the park. In the May 16 Commissioner Court meeting, commissioners approved Item 42 – funding to study Edgewater Park “the study phase is just getting underway so there aren’t any bid specs at this time.  But right now we are looking at park components and materials that are more resilient and doing park improvements south of Hamblen Road only.” “In addition to a boat launch and parking lots there will be a small and large dog park as well as both paved and unpaved trails.  We are trying to build a park that will assist in serving the greater Kingwood area.” “In addition we have been coordinating with he Houston Parks Board and connecting the Spring Creek Greenway into their trail network to enhance the overall trail system.” “Our designer Quiddity has a landscape architect on its team The architect has been tasked with adding plants that are native and will grow naturally to assist with natural mitigation efforts,” concluded Heppen The City of Houston requires dog parks to have fencing and Edgewater Park is in the City. Those who remember how logs collected in the railroad bridge supports next to the park during Harvey may remember how they contributed to catastrophic flooding Fencing can also collect debris swept downstream during floods To prevent the fences from forming debris walls that make flooding worse They attach the bottom of the chain-link fencing to steel poles with a steel ring But they attach the top of the fencing to poles with plastic zip ties that break when pressure increases enough That lets the fence flop down on the ground without being carried downstream You can see this ingenious system at the County’s Pundt Park along Spring Creek or in Buffalo Bayou Park downtown Because dredging by the Army Corps stopped downstream of Edgewater Park it will be difficult to launch larger boats with prop engines at Edgewater according to Heppen canoes and kayaks remain a possibility The Houston Parks Board is working with Harris County Precinct 3 to develop the West Fork Greenway and connect it to the Spring Creek Greenway The map below shows the trail it will take from Woodland Hills Drive to the freeway Trail will eventually continue west and cross over I-69/US59 via route shown in photos and first map above More on Edgewater as plans firm up.
