A Texas city has been deemed the worst in the state we use "city" loosely — its population is so small the U.S Census Bureau labels it as a census-designated place (CDP) In October 2023, financial news site 24/7 Wall St. compiled a list of the "worst city" in each U.S. state across three categories: economy, quality of life and community. A total of 22 key metrics were evaluated, including poverty rates, household income and deaths from substance abuse. The study pulled data from sources like the U.S the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Data and rankings may have changed since the study was initially published and may not reflect recent changes Which Texas city — or CDP — made the notorious list People are also reading: These are the best new restaurants in Austin in 2025. Some civil rights veterans say no She would later post on social media about a mural she'd seen in Selma before the run with the message "Remembering the Past .. "I thought it was a beautiful message for what I was trying to accomplish," she wrote.  Riggles said it was cooler than she’d expected with overcast skies up until about 11 a.m Then the sun came out and temperatures went into the low 90s.  Most of her journey was through rural areas she’d take photos to document it.  drinking either water or electrolytes every 10 minutes and for the most part tried to keep her feet off the pavement.  “I ran in the grass,” she said.  Riggles said she was fine up until the halfway point.  “Doing the second marathon was truly challenging for me,” she said “I just had to keep in mind that I was running for equality And for all students to have equal and fair treatment.”  There was an understandable break in the run Once she arrived near the Montgomery Regional Airport following the march’s historic path Riggles took a vehicle the rest of the way into Montgomery and ran all the remaining miles in the city.  Because the interstate wouldn’t have been blocked off during her run it was too great a risk to run all the way to downtown.  “I’m doing the distance,” Riggles said “But because I was hit by a truck previously I was uncomfortable running on the interstate close to Montgomery after the airport.” On the final leg of her journey running through downtown Montgomery emotions were running high as she ran past places the Rev like Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church.  “It really meant a lot to me.”  She’d already run around it a couple of times to make it officially up to 52.4 miles.  One of her first recognitions for her run came from her watch. The app she uses to mark her progress showed a line marking her path from Selma to Montgomery this activity is your longest run on Strava," it said Asked if she even considered going up the Capitol steps as her run ended “I stayed at the bottom," she said.  After a full day of running and promoting equality Friday was understandably a day to recuperate While she isn’t ruling out doing a double-marathon again “It was surprising even to me that I was able to run the whole distance “Especially since July isn’t really ideal race conditions in Alabama.” Her next goal is to qualify for the Boston Marathon though upcoming marathon plans remain virtual because of the ongoing coronavirus conditions.  she’s received many congratulations and been called "amazing," "inspiring" and "awesome" dozens of times Your purpose and your passion are a beacon of hope in these turbulent times!" wrote one You set an amazing and wonderful example for your students!!!"  Riggles took time to reply to most of them and said many of the comments were from current and former students.  “That meant a lot to me,” Riggles said.  Contact Montgomery Advertiser reporter Shannon Heupel at
