quiet Wednesday The last remaining days of the semester were switched to remote learning after a deadly shooting early Sunday morning at the end of a yearly festival Isaiah Caldwell, 24, a visitor from Albany, New York, was killed, and six others – including three students – were wounded at Yard Fest, the final event of the weeklong Viking Fest at the historically Black university in Elizabeth City. Caldwell was a member of the fraternal organization Groove Phi Groove, the group said. Anxiety is still high for students on campus, said freshman Samiyah Woods, who was inside her dorm at Bias Hall when the shooting happened. “Since the incident has happened, I have felt unsafe walking around campus,” Woods said. “I feel like most of the students here feel the same.” She says few students are walking around on campus. “We have to get shuttled to K.E. White, which is like a little off campus to get meals,” she said. “And I just feel like ever since then, all I've heard is like, I don't feel safe walking around. I don't feel safe going to class.” School counselors have visited the residence halls to talk and give out bags of treats, but Woods says more should be done to protect students. “We want to see actual change instead of the event being swept under the rug, and candy being offered,” she said. “We want to see changes in security, and we want to know what they're doing in order to make that happen.” Security also is a concern for parent Najhda Allen. “You just got to be careful because it's the open campus,” she said. “Anybody could bring anything on here, so you just got to be vigilant.” Another parent, Emily Davis, said on Tuesday that she came from Ohio early to pick up her daughter, who had witnessed the shooting and was scared. University officials have not responded to a request for comment. Woods says she would like the campus to be closed. “Since we have an open campus, people can come onto the campus anytime they want,” she said. After the Sunday shooting, the university canceled classes through Tuesday and said learning would be remote for the rest of the semester, which ends Friday. Exams also will be conducted remotely. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation says it has identified people of interest in the case.   props: {"enabled":true,"viewLimit":1,"excludeLabels":["Sponsored"],"timeframe":2592000000,"displayOverlay":false,"promoCode":"registration_meter","isLoggedIn":false,"requiresUserInput":false,"displayGate":true,"views":1} skipWhenExists: false }); Enjoy this free article CMSBrowserComponents.load({ el: '#vue-1746481261676-442' props: {"className":"content-meter__toggler","beforeExpanded":"Enjoy this free article.","beforeCollapsed":"Create a free account","targets":[".content-meter"],"toggleClass":"content-meter--open","iconModifiers":["xl"],"iconName":"chevron-up","initiallyExpanded":true,"expandedIconName":"chevron-down"} skipWhenExists: false });Create a free Diverse: Issues In Higher Education account to continue reading A fatal shooting occurred early Sunday at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) a historically Black university in North Carolina leaving one non-student dead and six others injured which took place following a campus celebration has raised concerns about safety and security at the institution and local law enforcement agencies are investigating the shooting that occurred around 12:30 a.m Sunday at the center of campus after Yard Fest part of the university's weeklong Viking Fest celebration a 24-year-old man who was not enrolled at the school was pronounced dead Two additional students were injured during the ensuing commotion All victims were transported to a local medical center for treatment and none of their injuries are considered life-threatening "There is no immediate threat to the campus community at this time and ECSU Police has increased patrols across the campus for added safety," university officials stated The shooting prompted a temporary campus lockdown with a shelter-in-place order for all students which had an enrollment of 2,261 students as of fall 2024 is located about 26 miles south of the North Carolina-Virginia border This incident follows another recent campus shooting at Florida State University on April 17 where two people were killed and six others wounded when a 20-year-old student opened fire near the student union Campus officials are urging anyone with information or videos related to the ECSU shooting to contact police as the investigation continues This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks The action you just performed triggered the security solution There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase You can email the site owner to let them know you were blocked Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page — Investigators from multiple North Carolina agencies are probing a shooting that occurred on the campus of Elizabeth City State University resulting in one fatality and several injuries part of the Viking Fest events held at the campus quad His identity is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin A lockdown was put in place following the shooting incident Two other students were injured during the ensuing commotion School officials stated that none of the injuries are considered life-threatening and all injured parties were transported to the hospital for treatment Josh Stein issued a statement following the shooting "I have been in touch with ECSU Chancellor Edmonds and Police Chief Cuthbertson following the tragic shooting to offer my support and condolences," Gov "My heart goes out to the family and friends of the person who was killed and Anna and I are praying for the other victims." investigators uncovered what they believe was a cockfighting operation in Elizabeth City The investigation ultimately ended with more than 50 birds being euthanized due to concerns over illnesses Carlos Mejia Matias and Servando Matias have pending warrants for animal cruelty All three have left the home where a search warrant was executed by law enforcement The sheriff's office began investigating after looking into reports of chicken thefts at the end of February while searching a property in the 1600 block of North Road Street Some of them had broken legs and wings and one had an injured eye Two of the chickens tested positive for Mycoplasma Synoviae — a highly contagious and aggressive respiratory illness After the State Veterinary Office with the NC Department of Agriculture examined all the chickens it was determined that several birds would likely test positive for illnesses The decision was made to euthanize the birds due to the likelihood of disease and injuries to several of them Investigators also say they found a wooden transport crate rubber covers used for rooster spars and performance enhancing drug bottles The state veterinary office says the evidence pointed to the home being used as more of a training facility which means the people connected to the home could not be charged with cockfighting investigators say animal cruelty is suspected since several of the birds appear to have been hurt while fighting and they were not treated for their injuries "These birds did not receive any care from a vet for the sustained injuries so the
