which she can't do because of her status as a sex offender
was arrested at her Salt Lake City home Thursday and was booked on one count of violating her status as a sex offender in Utah
a spokesperson for the Salt Lake City Police Department said Friday
Utah law prohibits registered sex offenders from entering protected areas
Detectives with the Salt Lake Police Department received information that Barzee had allegedly visited at least two parks in the city — Liberty Park and Sugar House Park — in April
Records from the Salt Lake County Metro Jail indicate Barzee is no longer in custody
It was not immediately clear if she was released on bail or if she has legal representation
Weisberg said in the statement that court records show she was released on judicial orders
Barzee was convicted of state and federal crimes, and in 2010 was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for her role in the abduction. She was released from prison in 2018
Barzee's husband, Brian David Mitchell, is serving a life sentence for Smart’s kidnapping and assaults.
Smart was taken at knifepoint from her Salt Lake City bedroom in 2002. The teen's kidnapping and disappearance garnered media attention and headlines across the globe.
Nine months after she was abducted, Smart was seen walking the streets of a Salt Lake City suburb with Mitchell.
She has said her time in captivity included repeated sexual assaults by Mitchell. Whan Barzee was released from prison, Smart said that during her time in captivity, the woman would "encourage her husband to continue to rape me."
Smart, now 37, has since become an outspoken advocate against child abduction and sexual violence.

Elizabeth Grace Hand became one of New York City’s most in-demand aestheticians by accident
While she had been beauty-obsessed from a young age (“I would steal my mom’s La Mer”) and grew up getting facials for her acne-prone skin
She eventually switched to beauty wholesale at L’Oreal
“I felt like I needed to know more about the skin
so I decided to go to aesthetician school while I was working at L’Oreal,” she says
“I didn’t think that I would actually be doing the treatments
Barbara Sturm’s after school and worked at a med spa on the weekends.”
Hand began receiving personal clients in her one-bedroom apartment
leading to the inception of Ställe Studios
Hand’s facial studio in Soho has four other estheticians who help her perform the studio’s signature treatments
Hand hopes her space feels like an exclusive beauty haven
Hand is always down to try a new treatment or product
adjusting to whatever is going on in her life
Her first pregnancy — she’s expecting a baby boy this summer
and I can’t use a lot of the devices,” she says
I’ll probably be blasting myself with lasers and stuff
Hand details her pregnancy-friendly skin-care routine
and the podcast she listens to when she wants to turn her brain off
I’ll do my skin-care routine while listening to podcasts. I love The Wellness Process, by Elizabeth Endres. And I love Giggly Squad
It depends on whether I want to use my brain or not
It’s a gel that turns into a milk when you rub it in
And then I’ll go in with an anti-aging and hydrating serum that has things like growth factors and peptides
I’ll either do the Bioeffect 30 Day Treatment or the Eighth Day the Regenerative Serum
For antioxidant protection and brightening
I’ll go in with the Sachi Skin Triphala Pigmentation Corrector
I use the Bioeffect EGF Day Serum as a gel moisturizer
I can use the Retrouvé Intensive Replenishing Facial Moisturizer
I also love the Ân-Balm Radiant Hydra-Balm
and then I’ll do the Auteur Definitive Neck and Décolleté Cream
I love the Poets Atelier Biome Active Face Oil
I love the Auteur Definitive Sun Drops SPF 50
I also like the Odacité Sheer Sunscreen Mineral Drops SPF 50 if I want to do zinc — I love zinc for most skin
Something else I’ve rediscovered is the Chantecaille Ultra Sun Protection Broad Spectrum SPF45
I like the Odacité SPF 50 Flex-Perfecting Mineral Drops Tinted Sunscreen in 1.5
but I’ll use some micellar water to take everything off
I’ll use the Bioeffect Micellar Cleansing Water or the Sofie Pavitt Micellar Pads
Then I’ll wash my face again with the Bioeffect Facial Cleanser
The trick is to put four or five pumps on dry skin and rub it in
and you’ll feel like it’s suctioning everything off
Then you add a little water to it and rise
I pat my face with the Clean Skin Club Clean Towels
My exfoliation routine has changed a bit since there are certain things you can’t use when you’re pregnant
and I haven’t needed to use salicylic acid and things like that because I’m not breaking out
But to get some of the dead skin cells off
I’ll mix my Auteur Enzyme Cleanser with my French Farmacie Elixir Exfoliant
I’ll also apply the Bioeffect eye serum in the evening
but I’ll also do the Retrouvé Revitalizing Eye Concentrate all over because it’s thick. When I was in my first trimester and getting pimples
I used the Emma Lewisham Supernatural Blemish Serum
I also love the Activist Manuka Honey Mask
I’ll use that as a spot treatment — it’s anti-inflammatory and antibacterial
A lot of spot treatments leave you with dry patches
When I was in my first trimester and getting pimples
I can’t use a lot of them while I’m pregnant
I’ve noticed with my clients who are a bit older
it does make a difference in terms of tightening
No one should buy any other LED mask besides the Celluma Pro panel
and you can use it on pets — I’ve had some clients just buy it for their pets
and it does really calm down redness and inflammation
I love the Beautology Cryo Toning tools because they’re shaped like a gua sha
so they get into the crevices of your face
And the PureLift Pro Plus is the best microcurrent
It also has EMS (electrical muscle stimulation)
Cecily Braden makes a good lymphatic brush
which I also love for de-puffing and sculpting the face
I like having different things on hand depending on what I need and how much energy I have
It’s one of those things that everybody can benefit from
but I think it’s particularly good for people who are breakup-prone
The only downtime you have is a little bit of flushing for an hour or two
and I’ve heard rumors that Sofia Richie gets it every two weeks
so I got Groupon lip filler because I had no money
I probably had every inch of my face filled
but I’ve gotten all of my face filler dissolved
I love Botox and how shiny it makes the skin look
I have a masseuse who comes to me who does really deep tissue massages
whether it’s acupuncture or a massage or lymphatic drainage
or go to prenatal yoga classes — that has been really helpful
My body’s not really craving intense workouts
but I’ve been trying to read more spiritual things too
Baths using the NatureofThings Restorative Floral Bath have also been a must
I’ll do the Tower 28 tinted moisturizer in La Cienega
Or the Chanel Le Beiges Water-Fresh Tint in medium light
which usually is at night or when I have breakouts
I like the Clé de Peau Radiant Cream Foundation in 01

2025)—Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner and members of the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office Gun Violence Task Force announced on Monday that Elizabeth Tejeda (DOB: 12/2/89)
pleaded guilty in April to numerous charges for her role in an expansive straw purchasing scheme as part of an interstate and international gun trafficking operation
Tejeda was convicted of eight counts of Straw Purchasing (F2) and eight counts of Unsworn Falsification (M2)
Investigators with the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General launched an investigation into Tejeda’s activities after a firearm purchase she attempted to make in Pennsylvania was flagged
The case was subsequently referred to the DAO’s Gun Violence Task Force (GVTF) for further investigation
The GVTF discovered that Tejeda had made eight prior firearm purchases between November 2022 and April 2023
the purchased firearms were essentially identical in make and model
strongly indicating that the defendant was engaged in straw purchasing
GVTF investigators obtained a warrant for Tejeda’s phone records
revealing that the defendant was driving from New York to Pennsylvania to purchase firearms before returning to New York
and investigators obtained another search warrant to perform a forensic analysis of her cell phone
That analysis recovered text messages from a co-conspirator directing her to purchase firearms on specified dates
and additional photographs of both a receipt for a microwave purchase and the dismantled microwave itself
which had been taken apart to smuggle the firearms
Investigators also recovered evidence that the firearms had been shipped from the Northeast to a company in Miami
that frequently ships items to the Dominican Republic
they found evidence of a wire transfer exceeding $3,000 from an unknown individual in the Dominican Republic to Tejeda
Tejeda is scheduled for sentencing before Judge Tracy Brandeis-Roman on July 17
Her co-conspirator was deported by federal authorities earlier this year before he could be prosecuted for his crimes
“I commend the Agents of the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General who helped conduct an excellent investigation into Miss Tejeda’s nefarious activities,” said District Attorney Krasner
“I also want to thank the Gun Violence Task Force Investigative Analysts for their hard work in this case
Assistant District Attorney Kevin Bentancur for holding this defendant accountable
her co-conspirator appears to have escaped accountability for his role in this gun trafficking plot
He was deported under President Trump’s rapacious deportation policy before my office could prosecute him.”
“I want to thank Agent Kathy Cerebe of the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General for her work in this investigation,” said Assistant District Attorney Bentancur
“I also want to thank GVTF Analysts Liubov Belskaya and Paul Haggerty for their excellent investigative analyses
which uncovered much of the vital evidence needed to secure a conviction in this case
The Gun Violence Task Force will continue its work to hold straw purchasers and others accountable who threaten public safety through the illicit use of firearms.”

When Elizabeth Caldwell first toured Clemson
she didn’t see herself as anything exceptional
“I knew that this was my home and where I needed to be,” said Caldwell
An invitation to become a National Scholar — one of the University’s premier scholarship programs serving students who demonstrate a unique combination of academic excellence
intellectual curiosity and leadership ability — started to help Caldwell believe that she not only belonged at Clemson
but that she could become a force for positive change
Caldwell was also announced as Clemson University’s Norris Medalist this spring
an award that recognizes a graduating student who
on the basis of exceptional scholastic achievement and leadership ability
is judged by the University Scholarships and Awards Committee to be the best all-around student.
Caldwell sees genomic medicine as a bridge between her studies and research at Clemson and her goals at Yale University
where she plans to study for a master’s degree in public health starting this fall
Since her first year on the Clemson campus
associate professor of genetics and biochemistry
in his DNA Repair and Meiotic Homologous Recombination Lab
Sehorn invited Caldwell to join the lab while she was still in high school and met with her before her first day of classes at Clemson
Sehorn said he knew Caldwell was focused on becoming a physician
Caldwell credits her work in the lab with making her fall in love with research
Sehorn encouraged Caldwell to apply for the highly selective Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) Program at St
“It is rare for the POE program to accept sophomore students into their program,” said Sehorn
“Elizabeth’s performance in that lab earned her an invitation to continue her research this past summer
resulting in a publication in the journal Leukemia.”
Sehorn noticed a clear change in Caldwell after her time in the POE program
she saw how research could influence not only medicine
but also promote policy changes that directly affect public health,” said Sehorn
Elizabeth will be well equipped to excel in genetics research and engage in building public policy without borders.”
In the future, Caldwell plans to work at the intersection of medicine and health care policy, specializing in care for patients with rare genetic diseases implicated in both invisible and visible disabilities. This focus is rooted in her personal experience with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
an understudied disorder that affects the connective tissue in her body
Caldwell said her disability wasn’t visible
That’s when she started seeing a shift in what people thought she could achieve
“I could tell that people significantly lowered their expectations of me versus when they couldn’t see my disability,” said Caldwell
If I’m doing well so far and continue to try
I feel like I can really make an impact and accomplish even more than what I had originally planned for myself
Caldwell has since advocated for increased accessibility for all students on campus
serving as the only undergraduate student on Clemson’s Accessibility Commission
She also co-founded Tigers 4 Accessibility
the University’s first and only student organization dedicated to creating a more inclusive and accessible campus culture and physical environment for students with disabilities
Caldwell also advocates for patient health as a volunteer with the Clemson Free Clinic
she assisted with the clinic’s recertification application
She also developed a Mobility Aid Program to help purchase medical equipment for patients
Tigers 4 Accessibility raised more than $4,000 this semester in support of that work
She has worked with the clinic’s Produce RX program
which offers fresh produce and nutritional education for clients
The program has seen a 30% increase in participation under Caldwell’s guidance
Caldwell said she plans to carry forward the investment Clemson made in her to others
“So much investment was made into me here
and I just want to keep supporting Clemson in whatever way possible to ensure that I can invest in students who also might not know what they’re capable of and could be making goals for themselves
based on having lower expectations of themselves,” said Caldwell
“Clemson will always be really special because it’s where I figured out who I am and what I want to do.”

“Momma duck was seen giving a very thankful quack (we think it was a thank you),” Cape Elizabeth Police Department said
Elizabeth Hurley's romantic history that preceded her country-strong romance with Billy Ray Cyrus is nothing short of bedazzling
Elizabeth Hurley has always loved the country
So feel free to tell her heart: The English model-actress coupling up with Billy Ray Cyrus after sharing a few scenes with him in the 2022 film Christmas in Paradise isn't that hard to understand
"We just laughed, and it was at a time I wasn’t laughing a lot," Cyrus, 63, shared on Apple Music Country's The Ty Bentli Show after they hard-launched their romance on Easter
I figured we were so different but in some very strange way we had way more in common than we had different."
they tied the knot in October 2023 and their divorce was finalized 10 months later
Hurley, 59, had experienced her own share of heartache over the years, as well, ranging from more private breakups to international-scandal-hall-of-fame-level betrayal
these two may just be happy to kick back and enjoy the here and now together
the simple pleasures Hurley takes part in at her estate in the West Midlands county of Herefordshire sounding pretty complementary to Cyrus' life in the Nashville area
"I love everything about the country—the fresh air, the peace, my dogs and my garden," the Austin Powers star, who's mom to 23-year-old son Damian Hurley, told Liz Earle Wellbeing in 2023
"After enduring [the drive from London on] the M4
I'll have a long bath with lots of scented bath oil and a good book."
I turn off my phone and soak in the tub with my eyes shut
having made everyone promise to leave me alone for a while."
While Hurley has been involved with her share of international men of mystery, her personal life hasn't been front and center recently the way Cyrus' has. A rift with at least some of his kids, including Miley Cyrus
coincided with his relatively brief relationship with Firerose
while ex Tish remarried actor Dominic Purcell in 2023
But at least once Cyrus' romance with Hurley made headlines, he seems to have received Damian's endorsement
"But I’ve really enjoyed the past couple of years and it’s made me realize how important it is to find someone who shares similar tastes
I think that’s because I’ve had some time to do entirely what I want to do."
During COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, the Elizabeth Hurley Beach swimwear designer leaned even further into her treasured domestic life—"Secretly, I'd much rather be gardening than doing anything else," she told Hello! that April
"I've been outside doing things for at least five hours a day"—but also said that she wouldn't mind if she could get a romance to bloom in the near future
"I'd love to fall madly in love with someone
which certainly won't happen whilst I'm locked down with blood relatives," Hurley said
"Maybe when it's over I'll put my headlamps on full beam and make an effort."
What she did do was dive into acting again
cranking out the movies Father Christmas Is Back
its fateful sequel Christmas in Paradise—featuring Cyrus as country artist Jimmy Love—and Christmas in the Caribbean
"We did very few scenes together," Cyrus told Ty Bentil
"but the couple times we were in the same scene there was a chemistry there."
He and Hurley admittedly didn't talk for two years
but after his marriage to Firerose imploded—Cyrus initially tried to have it annulled
but ended up filing for divorce—he got a text from a number he didn't know
you can’t get knocked down any flatter than laying on your back when life is kicking you," the "Achy Breaky Heart" singer recalled
"And in this moment… a friend reached out.”
it looks like life might be a little bit tough and just wanted you to know I’m in your corner; you’ve got a friend in your corner.' So
He had "no expectations of where we go from here," Cyrus added
but he was happier than he'd been in a long time with the "impressively brilliant" Hurley
who on April 27 posted photos from a "Tennessee weekend" with her new love
is along for the ride after taking a long break to recharge
"All of my boyfriends, husbands and fiancés have been my best friends, so it’s a terrible gap they leave,” she told Red
“I think that’s when you learn the importance of having other sources of comfort
You feel cozy with people that have been your best friends for 30 years
but occasionally you’ll meet someone who you click with—it’s important to keep yourself open to that.”
So while she and Cyrus may have no particular destination in mind
here's a map of the road Hurley traveled to get here:
Elizabeth Hurley and Hugh Grant were both up-and-comers when they met making the 1988 Spanish film Rowing With the Wind
in which Grant portrayed Romantic icon Lord Byron
"Hugh did look particularly fine in those cream britches," Hurley jested in an interview
"But I think I might have liked him anyway
The longtime couple seemingly shot to global stardom simultaneously, Grant for his breakout performance in 1994's Four Weddings and a Funeral and Hurley, by then a major model, for the still-iconic Versace safety-pin gown she wore to the film's London premiere
So wasn't the globe shocked when Grant was arrested in June 1995 for lewd conduct with a prostitute (and later was sentenced to two years' unsupervised probation after pleading no contest)
and his publicity tour for the warm 'n' fuzzy rom-com Nine Months turned into an apology odyssey
including at the film's premiere—"She has been real supportive and we're going to try and work it out," Grant said on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno—and they ultimately stayed together until 2000
great family," Hurley said on Larry King Live in 2000
reflecting on how she fluourished post-scandal
everything turned out OK in the end."
They remained super-close, Hurley calling Grant "my best friend for life" during an appearance on E!'s Daily Pop in 2018
"The thing is, if someone’s lovely, how could you not be on good terms with them?" she told the Daily Mail's You Magazine in 2017
explaining how she stayed good friends with most of her exes
'None of us has ever done anything bad to one another."
Hurely conceded they weren't as close anymore
but not because they had soured on each other
"I mean, he's married with five children," she noted during the Bazaar At Work summit in December 2024
but he's still very close to my heart." (And she is godmother to one of his kids
Hurley gave birth to son Damian Hurley in April 2002
after her romantic relationship with his dad
Bing wouldn't initially admit to being Damian's father
"I have always made it perfectly clear that I don’t want any financial help from him whatsoever," Hurley said in a statement at the time, per the Daily Mail. "The money is not wanted or welcome." (Bing had said, per the BBC
that once paternity was confirmed he would "generously support" his son.)
When Bing died by suicide in June 2020 at the age of 55. Hurley wrote on Instagram that she was "saddened beyond belief" by his death
"It is a terrible end," she continued
"Our time together was very happy and I’m posting these pictures because although we went through some tough times
In the past year we had become close again
We last spoke on our son’s 18th birthday."
Hurley briefly teamed up with NBA point guard Steve Nash in 2001
"They just vibed," Nash's agent told Sports Illustrated at the time
Hurley wed businessman Arun Nayar in 2007 after four years of dating
She announced their split on X (formerly Twitter) in December 2010: "For the record
my husband Arun & I separated a few months ago
Our close family & friends were aware of this."
Their divorce was finalized the following year
Nayar attending several public events with Hurley and Damian post-split
"Hugh and Arun are very important in our lives," Hurley told You in 2017
"I absolutely adore his mother; she’s German so we call her Mutti
In India I stay with her and when she’s here she lives around the corner
where Arun grew up and his brother still lives

The woman convicted along with her husband in the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart in 2002 has been arrested in Salt Lake City
SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — The woman convicted along with her husband in the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart in 2002 has been arrested in Salt Lake City
Wanda Barzee Mitchell and Brian David Mitchell were both convicted of taking Smart from her home in Salt Lake
Smart's younger sister told her parents and police a man had come in through the bedroom window with a knife
Barzee was arrested Thursday for violating her sex offender parole by going to Liberty Park
Officials with the Salt Lake City Police Department said she admitted to going to the park to “sit on benches and feed ducks” on April 9
The 79-year-old also told police she had been to Sugar House Park
she told police God had told her to go to the parks
Barzee was prohibited from going to any community parks
Barzee was released from jail with parole conditions that she call in once a week
appear at all court hearings and promise not to "commit any criminal offense."
Barzee spent 15 years in prison before her release in September 2018
believes Barzee still poses a threat to children
"I don’t think Wanda is a threat to Elizabeth
The comment 'God told me to' leaves one with a wide-open excuse to do anything," he said
"I do believe mental illness is a part of it
I believe she could still pose a threat to children."
said there's nothing in his "long history of knowing Wanda that would suggest that she would knowingly violate any law
it sounds like an alleged status offense ..
They're claiming the place she went to is precluded in connection with the terms and conditions of her status on the sex offender registry
I'm confident she didn't know it," he said
When asked if Barzee is a danger to anybody
she has fully complied with all the terms of a federally-supervised release ..
and never violated the terms and conditions of her supervision," he said
after the registered sex offender allegedly violated her parole by visiting two parks in Salt Lake City

who along with her husband Brian David Mitchell kidnapped Elizabeth Smart 22 years ago
Barzee recently visited "at least two parks in Salt Lake City
including Liberty Park and Sugar House Park," which she is forbidden to do because she is a registered sex offender
said Salt Lake police spokesman Brent Weisberg
who was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail under the name Wanda Mitchell
was arrested for investigation of being a sex offender in a protected area
Mitchell and Barzee kidnapped 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart in 2002 from her home and held her captive until their arrests nine months later
After years of court battles over her competency
Barzee pleaded guilty in federal court in 2009 to kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor
Barzee was found competent to proceed in a separate state court case against her
She pleaded guilty and mentally ill in state court to the 2002 attempted kidnapping of Smart's cousin and was sentenced to up to 15 years in prison
After completing her federal prison sentence, Barzee was returned to the Utah State Prison in April 2016. The Utah Board of Pardons and Parole gave Barzee credit for her time served in federal prison and released her on Sept. 19, 2018
Barzee — who is not allowed to go to any community parks because of her sex offender status — "admitted that she went to Liberty Park in Salt Lake City … because 'she was commanded to by the Lord,'" according to a police booking affidavit
She "admitted to going to the park to sit on benches and feed ducks
(Barzee) also admitted to going to Sugar House Park in Salt Lake City after being 'commanded' to."
Barzee was booked into jail and was released shortly afterward pending the filing of any formal charges against her
In 2011, Brian Mitchell was sentenced to life in federal prison
Armie Hammer and Elizabeth Chambers met through mutual friends in 2006
but they didn’t start a romantic relationship until she broke up with the boyfriend she was dating at the time
They tied the knot in 2010 and celebrated their 10-year wedding anniversary in May 2020
“TEN years married, twelve together, thirteen years as best friends,” Chambers, who is hosting the new docuseries Toxic on ID, wrote on Instagram at the time

Senator Elizabeth Warren opposes the GENIUS Act because she views Trump’s USD1 stablecoin as generating illegal financial returns
Her worries emerge from World Liberty Financial’s and UAE-based MGX’s agreement
which strengthened the market demand for USD1
Opposition against the bill has increased in the Senate
and now it must pass a key vote in the House
Elizabeth Warren raised alarms after the USD1 stablecoin saw a sharp rise in volume and market rank
The price increase came after World Liberty Financial agreed with MGX
allowing the usage of USD1 to buy Binance’s $2 billion acquisition
A reported increase in demand due to this transaction made USD1 the seventh most popular stablecoin worldwide
Warren believes the UAE agreement allowed WLFI to be affected by foreign influence and unfair profit-making activities that threaten national security
Transparency issues concerning the transaction prompted the senator to push for stricter control over international crypto business transactions
The senator’s statement intensified the pressure on representatives who had yet to determine their vote ahead of the House vote
The Trump family stablecoin surged to 7th largest in the world because of a shady crypto deal with the United Arab Emirates—a foreign government that will give them a crazy amount of money. The Senate shouldn’t pass a crypto bill this week to facilitate this kind of corruption. pic.twitter.com/4is9KgpXQb
Warren’s objections caused ten senators to reverse their original backing of the bill because of security vulnerabilities and a lack of anti-money laundering measures
Many critics assert the GENIUS Act should include more protective elements
even though it once gained bipartisan support
The changing public perception about the bill weakens its forward progress
The GENIUS Act
which began as an innovation support program
is being opposed because of concerns about political organizations’ misuse of its benefits
Congress officials doubt how the bill matches ethical requirements and financial standards
The bill’s approval risks undesirably giving unauthorized rewards connected to Trump’s financial interests
Before David Sacks predicted the bill had sufficient backing for May passage
Warren’s critical statements against the administration forced the administration to work double-time to gain senators’ trust
The House vote for the bill faces increased risk due to the unclear situation
The removal of the backing has paused all attempts to initiate more legislative talks in the immediate future
The current dialogue within the congressional body shows officials will proceed only when financial oversight gets more robust
The Trump administration has not responded directly to the rising demands for alterations to potential legislation
World Liberty Financial decided to stop its exchange listing plans for USD1 while waiting for the outcome of the GENIUS Act vote
The temporary hold creates difficulties for its market expansion strategy and its attempts to challenge Tether and other competitors
Projecting regulatory confusion may cause the firm to stumble in its pursuit of a competitive position in this constantly changing stablecoin market
The passage of the GENIUS Act represented an essential requirement in WLFI’s plan because it would have enabled USD1 to work within the extended financial infrastructure
the company encounters rising legal obstacles that create challenges in finding new business partnerships
The unclear situation has affected its development plan while delaying technical implementation projects

Elizabeth King cut a striking figure against the Big Muddy
Backdropped by Mississippi River, Memphis’ octogenarian queen of sacred soul played on the Mempho Presents stage on May 3, kicking off the final day of the RiverBeat Music Festival at Tom Lee Park in Downtown Memphis
the Mempho Presents Stage scheduled a series of Mid-South gospel greats including the Wilkins Sisters and Jubilee Hummingbirds as part of the day’s entertainment
But it was King who delivered the first and best performance for a small but enthusiastic crowd that basked in her infectious sprit and danced to the smoldering gospel grooves of her backing band
The funky four-piece combo — led by guitar Texas wizard Will Sexton
drummer Tavion Robinson and King’s son Zack McGhee on bass — provided empathetic support for King’s intense religious devotionals
Nothing but professionals up here but me,” joked King
RIVERBEAT 2025: RiverBeat delivers the blues with all-star Mississippi musicians including Bobby Rush
A Mississippi native and longtime Memphian, King has been one of the great resurrection stories in local music since signing to the Bible & Tire Recording Co. in 2019. King, who released a handful of sides in the early 1970s, left music to raise a family, 15 kids in all.
Finally, in her late 70s, she got a chance at a second act, and has since put out several critically acclaimed albums including 2021’s “Living in the Last Days,” 2022’s “I Got a Love” and 2024's “Soul Provider.”
Even at 81, her voice remains a powerful instrument, one she put to good use on a selection of searing numbers that testified to her faith, including “A Long Journey,” “I’ll Fly Away” and “I Got A Love.”
“This song is for everybody out here whether you know the Lord or not,” said King, introducing the slow-burning song of praise, “Everybody Needs Somebody.” “But I know you know Him or you wouldn’t be out here today.”
At the end of her set, King summoned members of her family — including her daughter and granddaughter — from the audience to join her on stage.
The four Kings then created a stunning blend of voices and vibrations as they worked through “Pure Heavenly Joy,” harmonizing on an extended coda that brought the audience on their feet.
The show over, King bowed, put on her shawl, threw on her purse and walked off stage, having served the Lord and provided a bit of salvation for those at RiverBeat as well.

Mary Magdalene is the first person to see the risen Jesus
beautiful space between meeting the Lord and telling the disciples what she’d seen
Mary Magdalene was the whole entire church
giving rise to her identification as “the apostle to the apostles.”
“What an important and special thing for the first person to witness Jesus resurrected [be] a woman,” Elizabeth Tabish said
and for her to not turn away from the crucifixion
And then this beautiful reward of remaining with him to the point of seeing him resurrected
the historical drama series that turned the life of Jesus into prestige TV and against all odds became a commercial and critical smash
but the franchise’s inventive theatrical outings have netted over $115 million worldwide
In an era where many Christians are every bit as skeptical of big budget biblical adaptations as Hollywood studios are of Christian audiences
Tabish’s performance deserves no small amount of credit for the success
breathing real dimension into a character who has endured several millennia of flattening
“There’s all sorts of fan fiction,” Tabish said of speculation over Mary’s history
“People see and believe what they want about these characters because there’s so little written about them.”
Mary Magdalene is one of the most fanfic’d figures in the New Testament
She has been imaginatively cast as everything from Jesus’ secret wife in the movie’s adaptation of Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code to the emaciated desert ascetic as depicted in Donatello’s sculpture
The most famous and enduring bit of mythology around Mary Magdalene is the idea that she was a sex worker — a detail she likely gained from being conflated with other Marys in the Gospel
The Bible itself does not suggest Mary Magdalene was involved in sex work
but Tabish says it wouldn’t bother her if it did.
“I haven’t really cared too much either way,” she said
“It never felt particularly offensive to me if she was a prostitute
This is a woman that’s gone through so much and finds redemption
If we label her as a prostitute before all of this
she’s a woman who works around a lot of guys
which already puts her in a unique position
which she says makes her a bit of a unicorn in Christian circles.
“It’s a very rare thing for someone to publicly discuss both Christianity and progressive politics,” she said
“But I know that there are so many people that are Christian and leftist
and I don’t know if they’re feeling represented in any way
I just want to share that there are so many
and their political beliefs in many ways are influenced by their Christianity
I just think those two things go hand in hand.”
Tabish’s spiritual journey has not been straightforward
She was born in Utah and grew up frequenting the Maronite Catholic Church attended by her father’s Lebanese family
a worship experience she looks back on fondly
But things changed when her family moved to Oklahoma
where megachurch culture clashed mightily with her sense of church as an “intimate
I was confronted with the power dynamics and hypocrisy in a lot of church structures,” she said
“When you read the Gospels and you read what Jesus was teaching
You want to be inspired by that and apply it to your life
you’re focusing on all of our sinful nature and going to hell and the devil always being after you
you go to hell if you don’t go to confession
It was this information that felt at odds with what I would get from reading stories about Jesus and reading the gospels
“That was such a distraction from the message that I just thought
Her belief in policies that welcome refugees and offered health care and education to all (“I love Bernie Sanders,” she told Vanity Fair) seemed to put her at odds with the Christian majority in the U.S
and contributed to a long period of feeling dismissive of religion
Things started to change when she read the first script for The Chosen
an audition she landed after several years of scraping by on odd
“It felt like it was this answer to a question I asked a long
long time ago: How can we express the real thing?”
Mary Magdalene is a survivor of sexual assault who struggles with alcoholism
giving her a craggy humanity that Tabish inhabits with skillful emotion
Assault and substance abuse aren’t any more part of Mary’s official canon than sex work is
but the show’s writers have always been open about their own creative interpretations
and filled with an immense capacity for love — is another chapter in an ancient

Throughout the Middle Ages and through the Protestant Reformation
Mary’s association with promiscuity transformed her in the popular imagination into a woman as beautiful as she was libidinous; extravagantly wealthy
but only useful to Jesus once she brought her ravenous sexual appetite in check
it proved convenient for patriarchal religious societies that found shaming sex an effective tool for keeping women in check.
as New Testament scholar Bart Ehrman has argued
“the founder of Christianity,” but also the quintessential Christian woman — a disciple who was mistreated and misunderstood because she was a woman in a community largely led by men
“I think being a woman in this industry has been so difficult for so long,” she says
referring to a career where she’s regularly experienced “a certain dismissiveness
a certain silent request that you be seen and honored
A request that you be seen and not heard.”
Tabish notes that the cast and crew of The Chosen have a broad and diverse range of beliefs
created a small online stir when he appeared on right-wing commentator Tucker Carlson’s show in March
There was another minor controversy in 2023
when show creator Dallas Jenkins assured fans that he believes “in a biblical viewpoint of sexuality” — a way of assuaging conservative fans’ concerns after a gay pride flag was spotted on set
“I’ve been quietly just okay with men speaking for me and being the leaders and voices of the show
When I got to a point where when someone is representing just themselves — but accidentally
representing the show — and it doesn’t align with me
it’s a hard thing to just speak up and say
that’s for you and this is for me and that’s okay.”
That’s the impulse that got Tabish to have the confidence to speak more publicly about her beliefs
“And these are the things I want to say and to share the female experience and to share at least my experience
Tabish is gearing up to film The Chosen’s sixth season
which will finally see its central figure crucified
This sets the stage for Mary’s own meeting with Jesus at the empty tomb
an event Tabish says is her favorite story from the life of Jesus
Her other favorite is the story of the woman caught in adultery
from which we get Jesus’ command to let those without sin cast the first stone.
that is this message and lesson that I constantly return to: not judging people,” she says
“You focus on fixing yourself before you go around trying to fix everyone else

Senator Elizabeth Warren is urging the U.S
Senate to hit the brakes on a pivotal digital asset bill
sounding the alarm over a $2 billion stablecoin deal tied to the Trump family and a foreign government
The Massachusetts Democrat claims the controversial project could pose serious risks of corruption and foreign influence
particularly with a major investment coming from the United Arab Emirates
In a pointed statement on social media over the weekend
Elizabeth Warren called attention to World Liberty Financial
a crypto venture reportedly backed by members of the Trump family
dollar-pegged stablecoin has skyrocketed in market value
recently climbing to the 7th largest globally thanks in large part to a massive financial agreement with UAE-based firm MGX
“The Trump family stablecoin surged to 7th largest in the world because of a shady crypto deal with the United Arab Emirates
a foreign government that will give them a crazy amount of money,” Warren wrote
MGX, which counts Abu Dhabi’s powerful sovereign wealth fund Mubadala and AI powerhouse G42 among its backers, has committed to using the Trump-linked stablecoin as part of a sweeping $2 billion investment in Binance and other crypto infrastructure
The deal has raised eyebrows not only for its scale but for its geopolitical undertones
especially amid Elizabeth Warren’s longstanding concerns over money laundering
and the lack of regulatory oversight in the digital asset space
Elizabeth Warren’s warning comes as the Senate debates the GENIUS Act
a landmark bill that would establish the first comprehensive federal framework for stablecoins in the United States
a cornerstone of Donald Trump’s financial and crypto policy agenda
has become a lightning rod in bipartisan negotiations
Initially welcomed by some Democrats as a step toward much-needed regulation, the revised version of the GENIUS Act unveiled by Republican lawmakers has sparked a backlash. According to Politico
at least nine Democratic senators have pushed back against the changes
citing gaps in protections against illicit finance and broader systemic risks
Once-promising bipartisan cooperation is beginning to fray
with Democratic lawmakers increasingly skeptical that the bill
does enough to prevent misuse of stablecoins by bad actors or to protect the U.S
financial system from volatility and exploitation
GOP leaders remain determined to push the bill through
Republican aides say further amendments are being considered to address Democratic concerns
including enhanced anti-money laundering measures and tighter compliance requirements for issuers
with mounting political pressure and growing scrutiny of the Trump family’s involvement in the sector
Lawmakers had hoped to bring the GENIUS Act to a floor vote by the end of the month
but the deepening controversy may delay that timeline
Elizabeth Warren’s latest intervention has added fuel to an already combustible debate
one that now straddles the crossroads of crypto policy
and America’s increasingly blurred lines between public service and private gain
“This isn’t just about crypto,” one Senate aide stated
“It’s about the integrity of our financial system and who gets to shape its future.”
