an elderly woman who owns the residence and her adult son
A preliminary investigation found that the homeowner’s son awoke to the sound of rustling inside their home
The son armed himself with a handgun and found a burglar standing next to a safe in the home
The resident reportedly confronted the suspect and the suspect came at him
Deputies located a stool and broken window that appears to be the point of entry used by the suspect
The deceased burglary suspect has not been identified
Investigators are at the scene and will be working throughout the day to identify the suspect

(AP) — One of the two men charged with vandalizing electrical substations in Washington state over the holidays to cover a burglary was ordered released from federal custody Friday to seek substance abuse help
A federal judge issued the order for Matthew Greenwood
after renewed efforts by his attorney to get Greenwood into an inpatient drug-treatment facility/
have been charged with conspiracy to damage energy facilities
Greenwood told investigators after his arrest that the two knocked out power so they could burglarize a business and steal from the cash register
RELATED | 2 men charged in connection to attacks on Pierce County substations
25 caused at least $3 million in damages and left about 30,000 people without power
according to court documents and utility officials
Greenwood was also charged with possession of a short-barreled rifle and short-barreled shotgun
Bryan granted Greenwood's release on an appearance bond
or the promise to show up to future hearings and abide by conditions
including electronic monitoring and mandated drug treatment
telling Greenwood: "It's up to you to be sure that the risk is well-taken."
Attorney Todd Greenberg opposed Greenwood's release
noting Greenwood's alleged disregard for community safety
"Is this someone the court can trust to be safe in this community?" Greenberg said
"I think the answer to that is 'no.'"
assistant federal public defender Rebecca Fish
said he was neither a flight risk nor a threat
He has lived locally his entire life and was expecting his first child
Fish said Greenwood was on a waitlist for sober and supportive housing
which he would enter into following treatment
Conspiracy to attack energy facilities is punishable by up to 20 years in prison
Possession of an unregistered firearm is punishable by up to 10 years
The substations targeted were the Graham and Elk Plain substations operated by Tacoma Public Utilities and the Kapowsin and Hemlock substations operated by Puget Sound Energy
the men forced their way into fenced areas surrounding the substations and damaged equipment to cause a power outage
Crahan admitted that he helped plan the scheme and primarily served as a lookout that day
the men plotted additional ways to cause power outages by felling trees in order to cut power and burglarize businesses and steal from ATMs
Law enforcement arrested both men in late December before they tried that plan
power grid needs better security to prevent domestic terrorism and after a large outage in North Carolina last year took days to repair
— A man who was part of a coordinated attack on electrical substations in Pierce County said meth impaired his judgment when he and a friend took out power to 15,000 people in an attempt to avoid detection while committing burglaries
were "desperate and heavily using methamphetamine" when they devised the scheme to knock out power at four power stations and then burglarize ATMs
And caused immense harm in the process...harm Mr
Greenwood likely will never stop atoning for,” said Rebecca Fish
an assistant federal public defender who is representing Greenwood
Fish called the power station attack an "astronomically bad decision" and noted that Greenwood’s life was in crisis in December 2022 when he faced eviction and was dealing with significant meth addiction
Greenwood is sorrier than he can ever express in words for his actions and over the past year
he has demonstrated his commitment to turning his life around and ensuring that he is never again in a place to make such a reckless and harmful decision,” Fish wrote

prompting a recommendation that would spare him from federal prison and instead sentence him to six months of home confinement followed by probation for three years
“Greenwood’s conduct while on pretrial release is impressive and commendable he successfully underwent inpatient drug treatment
is raising a new baby girl with his long-term girlfriend
and has had no bond violations,” wrote Todd Greenberg
“The government is also mindful that Greenwood assisted the government by agreeing to a proffer interview about his offense conduct
this enabled the government to rule out any potential domestic terrorism/ideological motive for the offense in this case.”
Crahan and Greenwood pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to damage energy facilities
which carries a maximum term of 20 years in prison
Estudillo pressed Greenberg about a disparity in sentencing recommendations between Crahan and Greenwood
The difference is the conduct of the two men since their arrest in this case and that can not be more contrasting ..
Crahan was not honest with probation about drug use and had violations leading to him being detained again," Greenberg responded
it was a significant possibility and it was being investigated as domestic terrorism
Other attacks had happened around the country with that motive
was very honest about his conduct and the conduct of Mr
Fish also addressed the disparity in the sentencing recommendation
adding that Greenwood was not aware of drug treatment options and has had success at drug treatment and holding down a full-time job to provide for his family
“All the people he knew were people he did drugs with and putting his trust in them was a bad choice," Fish said
Judge Estudillo listened to arguments from both the prosecution and defense about their agreed recommendation that Greenwood not serve time in federal prison then called a recess to consider the sentence
“How can somebody not consider the effect on all of these other people out there
The real people you are hurting are the people who have less economic means
individuals with medical issues who need power to operate medical equipment
That is why it's so frustrating," Estudillo said
Estudillo then sentenced Greenwood to 12 months of home confinement and three years of probation
which was higher than the sentencing recommendation between Greenwood's attorney and prosecutors
Both Greenwood and Crahan will have to pay restitution for the damage caused by the attacks
Greenwood spoke briefly in court before sentencing
“I’m terribly sorry," Greenwood said.“I’d like to apologize to the court and the community
everybody I affected with the mistake I made
I wish I could explain the difference in the way that I think now that I’m sober
I hadn’t been sober since I was too young to remember
I’m sure that had I been sober a lot of my life would have been different
I take full responsibility for what I did."
Graham and Kapowsin that knocked out power to thousands
The federal prosecutor cited the nature and circumstances of an alleged crime involving an attack on an energy facility
"It goes without saying how serious these events were
and set off sparks and a fire and only by good fortune there was no explosion," said Assistant U.S
In addition to the Christmas Day allegations
Greenberg told the court Crahan and Matthew Greenwood
spent hours scouting other substation locations after the Christmas Day outages
"Went out next two nights and scoped out another substation," Greenberg said
Greenberg told the court Crahan has a history of reoffending on court supervision or while charges are pending against him
He cited three instances including his criminal record

asked the judge to consider allowing Crahan to stay with his parents in Roy and wear an electronic home monitoring device
insisting Crahan would meet the reporting requirements
was in the courtroom for Tuesday’s proceeding
Afterwards he said he was disappointed to not be taking his son home
When asked his reaction to his son's arrest
Paul Crahan said he hasn't spoken with his son since he was arrested and news of him being linked to the substation attack
"I can't understand that all," Paul Crahan said
Both are facing charges of conspiracy to damage energy facilities
Attorney Stephen Hobbs asked that both men be detained because they are considered a flight risk and because of the severity of the charges
Court documents unsealed last week revealed that Greenwood alleged the motivation behind the substation attacks was to cut power to a local business so they could burglarize it
The two have been linked to four substation outages on Christmas day
The substation attacks left thousands in the dark
and two of the four substations sustained $3 million in damages
RELATED | Vandalism at 4 Pierce County substations knocks out power to thousands on Christmas
The substations were vandalized over a 12-hour period starting on Christmas morning
The two substations in Graham and Elk Plain are operated by Tacoma Public Utilities
and the substations in Kapowsin and Hemlock are operated by Puget Sound Energy
both utility companies said they appreciated the quick work and are cooperating with authorities
Investigators said cell phone records and surveillance video from Puget Sound Energy captured images that helped lead to the New Year's Eve arrests
The FBI is investigating the case with assistance from the Pierce County Sheriff's Department
Attorney Nick Brown last week praised the quick work of investigators and said the case is still under investigation
The case now goes to the grand jury to consider
as both men have waived their right to a preliminary hearing

-- When Gary Sanders returned home from Portland last Friday night after a trip with his son
a detective sergeant with the Pierce County Sheriff's Department
was heading out to helpt at an officer-involved shooting
A deputy shot and killed a man who was carrying a knife and having a mental breakdown near the Elk Plain area
According to the Sheriff's Department
the man refused to comply with orders and climbed inside of a patrol car
The shooting marked the latest in a series of violent crimes in unincorporated Pierce County in recent weeks
Six people were murdered last week in Pierce County-- including two children who were killed by their father
"It gets hard just because you do get worn," said Sanders
12 people have been murdered in unincorporated Pierce County
and that number is higher than all of last year's homicide investigations
but it seems like this year we’re riding the wave," said Sanders
it's the same people responding to these calls -- from deputies and detectives to forensics teams and SWAT
"You kind of do the self-check and then 'OK
Let me reach out to others' and stuff," said Sanders
Officers learn to put emotions to the side and get the job done
This year's wave of violence also included the death of one of their own: Deputy Daniel McCartney
He was shot and killed while responding to a home invasion
"We can't sit there and grieve Dan's loss right there and - not to say the individuals that went out to the -- our detectives that had to go to the autopsy and see Dan there," said Sanders
"It's a reality check there because it brings in the grasp of the risk that we all take when we go out there working."
hard time," said Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor
one of the challenges is that the department is under-staffed yet more is being asked of officers
Rather than loading more and more and more on top of people with badges
let's all assume some responsibility," said Pastor referring to issues like substance abuse
"Let's recognize the cost to individuals of asking them to do more and more and more."
Pastor said many agencies are still dealing with the cutbacks from the recession
Pierce County has started adding more staff and helping build the ranks of the department
We're a ways behind," said Pastor
"The trouble is they don't have a bag of money under their desk."
Pastor said there are currently 329 commissioned officers who serve in unincorporated Pierce County and its contract cities
-- A Pierce County deputy shot and killed a 28-year-old Spanaway man on Friday night after the man reportedly tried to get into the deputy's patrol car
Earlier 911 callers said the man was having a breakdown
was armed with a knife and was trying to get into people's vehicles
the Pierce County Sheriff's Department says
The incident occurred at 252nd Street East and Mountain Highway East in the Elk Plain area
when a woman called 911 and said a male friend was having a mental breakdown in the middle of the road
"Let go of me now," the dispatcher heard the woman say
She got back on the phone and said the man was going east on 252nd Street East
A second person called 911 to say a man had just tried to get into his vehicle
The first 911 caller was still on the phone and reported that her male friend was trying to "jump into other people's vehicles." Then she reported he was trying to get into her vehicle
a deputy radioed in that shots had been fired
The Sheriff's Department said the man reportedly refused to heed the deputy's commands at gunpoint
then tried to get into the deputy's vehicle
two-seat private plane crashed in a Pierce County field Wednesday
The two men inside were extricated from the plane and walked away with bumps and bruises
according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department
which was occupied by a 76-year-old man and a 64-year-old man
took off from Shady Acres Airport in Elk Plain
It lost power and flipped as they attempted to make an emergency landing in a field
according to the Sheriff’s Department
The crash near the 4200 block of 192nd Street East
southeast of Spanaway in unincorporated Pierce County
a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department
“The plane landed on its top and they are working to extricate the two people inside,” he said shortly after the crash
Both people in the plane were conscious and talking to emergency responders
the Sheriff’s Department said the men were treated by medics at the scene
“Amazing that their injuries were only minor, both men are walking around the scene & doing well,” the agency tweeted
It only takes a few minutes on the phone with Olympia contractor Elizabeth Rillera to understand why producers of “Tough as Nails” (9 p.m
6) wanted her to be a contestant on the CBS competition series
In addition to modeling at 19 and performing in a stunt show at a Chinese theme park
says she competed in Strongman competitions from 2013-16 and qualified for nationals several times “but I never went to nationals because they’d have it somewhere dumb that wouldn’t be fun to visit.”
And don’t consider referring to it as Strongwoman or Strongperson
So let’s just call it Strongman and not overcomplicate things being overly sensitive
… I think that if people were less sensitive
then we wouldn’t have to deal with people being offended for half of our lives
she introduced herself as ‘Elizabeast’ with a smile,” says Louise Keoghan
“Tough as Nails” co-creator with husband and show host Phil Keoghan
“She has this air of confidence that she clearly backed up with her physical and mental strength.”
After Rillera’s boyfriend and sister both saw ads for the show during Super Bowl LV in February
“I argued against it emphatically and finally gave in,” Rillera says
But she filled out the online application anyway
CBS contacted her and she was under consideration
But to stay in the running she had to film herself weekly doing burpees — a pushup followed by a leap in the air — to display her cardiovascular strength and mental toughness with a goal of improving week-to-week
“This is what made me want to be on the show: I told my boyfriend and my sister I had to do these burpees and my boyfriend’s like
‘You wanted me to apply and jump through all these hoops and now
I don’t quit like that.’ So then I was doing it out of spite.”
Louise Keoghan says Rillera’s determination was evident to the show’s producers
“She [brought] the right combination of life skills
endurance and brawn,” Keoghan says. “Viewers can expect Elizabeth to be a straight-shooter who says it like it is.”
she was told to watch past seasons of “Tough as Nails.”
“I liked the message and I wanted to be a part of that message,” she says
“I wanted to go on TV and show exactly how capable a person can be
This is the kind of person you need to be if you’re gonna make it through the struggles.”
Between filling out the initial application and when she was flown to Los Angeles in May for potential filming (without knowing if she’d even been picked to be on the show)
Sending in the application was already a commitment,” she says
noting she learned more about competing on a TV show than any specific skill since she couldn’t prepare because she didn’t know in advance what each new challenge would be
“I learned a lot about other people more than anything
because I don’t really interact with a lot of people in my life.”
As for the show casting contestants from Washington in all three seasons filmed so far
Keoghan isn’t sure what to chalk that up to
“Maybe it’s a coincidence or maybe it’s something in the water
but the ‘Tough As Nails’ contestants we have cast from Washington have this ‘can do’ approach to every challenge,” she says. “They never say ‘I can’t’ and view every job we give them as an exciting adventure
There is definitely an explorer-type mindset mixed with not being afraid to do the hard work however uncomfortable it is.”
his book proposing a re-wilding of our natural environment
George Monbiot refers to Shifting Baseline Syndrome as a major cause in our misperception of what is ‘natural’
Our environment is in its ‘natural’ state when we are young
The only environmental destruction we really notice is what occurs within our own lifetimes
Humanity’s baseline for what is natural keeps shifting with every new generation
clouding our view on longer processes of environmental damage and degradation
Shifting Baseline Syndrome can have perverse effects on our attempts at nature conservation – sometimes
rather than restoring the environment to its previous natural state
Monbiot has a particular bone to pick with the sheep that are used to maintain large tracts of Britain in a near-desert condition
and the medieval switch to a wool-based economy destroyed the richly biodiverse forests that covered most of the island
America too is subject to the paradox of ecological degradation: its scope is so massive that it’s hard for us as individuals to notice
These maps suggest some interesting markers to get a sense of the discrepancy between our ‘natural environment’
They compare the geographic spread of cities and towns (1) in America named after native animals and the current geographic distribution of those species
most indicate a huge reduction in the range of said animals
Let’s start with bears: as the map indicates
they roam far and wide: from the Appalachians all the way into Maine
throughout the west and the Pacific states
Most ‘bear’ towns align more or less with the animal’s current range:
But some indicate that the majestic predator once had an even wider distribution:
It’s worse for wolves: they’re limited to two relatively small areas near the Canadian border
far away from most ‘wolf’ towns:
Judging by the places named after the animal
elk used to be prevalent across most of the country
‘Elk’ towns are concentrated in the Midwest:
The current range is limited mainly to the Rockies and the Pacific Northwest
Badgers are holding firm in most of the country
absent only from the eastern third of the country (and a small part of the northwest)
There are still badgers in all badger towns on this map:
Poor wolverines: clinging on to a dwindling strip of land in the northwest
with small colonies remaining in California and on the Nevada-Utah border
Where are the times when they roamed Michigan in such numbers that two towns in that state – Wolverine Lake
near the top of the state’s Lower Peninsula – were named after them
