lives from the content on our mobile devices to the websites we visit the films and shows we watch to the digital games we play New developments and advances are being made at a rapid pace in areas such as virtual reality and human-computer interaction The production of all of this digital content opens up numerous employment opportunities as well as outlets for artistic expression This degree helps prepare students for the digital media world The core transferable skills learned in the degree will also make the students more employable even in non-media focused jobs as employers are increasingly incorporating digital media related tasks into job roles that previously required no media knowledge This degree also creates opportunities for students who have an interest in pursuing the cinematic arts to do so in a way that fosters their original creative voice but also provides them with practical skill sets This combination opens up the range of employment opportunities to students after graduation This interdisciplinary degree in digital media provides students with a core set of digital media production skills and knowledge of various narrative and story structures Students then will be able to select courses based on their interests The list of courses they can select from include numerous courses in digital audio and video production All students will complete a digital media capstone project tailored to their unique interests in Digital Media is designed for students who wish to pursue a path that combines art and technology allowing for both artistic expressions as well as preparation for a variety of digital media careers What careers do digital media majors land in Explore Careers The minor in digital media is designed for students who wish to learn tools techniques and skills for the creation of digital media Students can then customize their studies through a comprehensive set of electives The coursework provides them with opportunities for artistic expression while broadening their career options by teaching them to be critical and effective content creators Recent studies have shown that possessing digital media skills increases employability in non-media fields How many minutes a day do people spend watching content on screens of various sizes The minor in film studies will help students become critical consumers of the media that saturate our daily lives including its evolution from earlier forms of media as well as the impact other art forms have had on its development They will consider multiple critical and theoretical approaches to film and media analysis and how film has both impacted and been impacted by advances in technology Other areas of exploration include various narrative structures used in Elmhurst’s First Endowed Chair in Science Elmhurst University has announced a significant philanthropic gift that will establish the University’s first endowed faculty chair in science a married couple with ties to the University have established a $1.5 million estate commitment to create the endowed chair which they hope will “help attract and retain brilliant scholars” in the sciences and mathematics The donors want their gift to highlight the importance of faculty research which at Elmhurst usually includes students as well as the role of excellent teaching in shaping students’ academic experience and long-term career goals “We are so pleased to recognize these exceptional donors and their transformative gift,” said Elmhurst University President Troy D “Their commitment will leave a lasting impact by empowering Elmhurst faculty to innovate and discover through scholarship and by inspiring our students to become the next generation of leaders in the critical STEM fields.” One of the donors is an alumnus who graduated from Elmhurst with a degree in economics and both donors have had long and distinguished STEM-related careers joining their fields—biotechnology and health care analytics—in their nascency both donors were influenced by great teachers and hope their gift will help ensure that future generations of students are similarly inspired “We’d like for whoever is appointed to the endowed chair to be someone with vision and curiosity who can think beyond what they’re already doing and bring new knowledge and thinking to their work and share that enthusiasm and passion with their students,” one of the donors said “Working with these incredible donors has been a genuine honor,” said Susan Clausen senior director of advancement at Elmhurst “Their passion for STEM and profound dedication to advancing the field have been truly inspiring.” the endowed chair would be awarded to a faculty member in the University’s School of Science “The gift reflects the success of our alumni as well as the donors’ confidence in this school its staying power and the work we’re doing,” said Brian Wilhite “We greatly appreciate their support and commitment to our faculty and students.” “Elmhurst University is deeply grateful to these donors for their generous investment in our academic mission,” said Lia Kampman vice president for Contact us at [email protected] or (630) 617-3600 As her time at Elmhurst University comes to a close, senior environmental studies and economics double major Lucia Zdenahlik ’25 can look back on her college experience with no regrets – she really did it all When Zdenahlik first began her college journey she was facing the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic as a senior in high school she chose to attend her local community college where she could further explore her interests and find her path She had always intended to eventually attend a four-year institution so it was during an Oakton transfer fair her freshman year that Zdenahlik made her first Elmhurst connections It was important to her to find a school that had a strong reputable environmental studies program like Elmhurst does “There’s a really nice interdisciplinary environmental studies program,” Zdenahlik said. “I met with the head of the program, Dr. Kelly Mikenas, and she explained a bunch of information about the program requirements and the courses so I could plan ahead when I was at Oakton and make sure I was on track before transferring There’s always cooperation and partnership between students and faculty working together to find solutions.” The faculty at Elmhurst are engaged scholars and practitioners in their fields going above and beyond to ensure each student feels welcome in their class while gaining the best practices knowledge and skills for a successful future Zdenahlik then found out about a generous scholarship awarded to one honors student at Oakton in partnership with Elmhurst Zdenahlik not only applied for the scholarship which made her decision to become a Bluejay a no-brainer If Zdenahlik could describe her transfer process in one word, it would be supportive. She worked with Elmhurst admission counselors to ensure her transition from Oakton to Elmhurst would be as smooth and seamless as possible Zdenahlik could focus on getting acclimated to a new place and jump right into her studies “They were really on the ball,” Zdenahlik said they would answer their phone or reply to my emails very quickly They also worked with me to make sure all my credits transferred over It was all easy—Elmhurst is very supportive as well as a member of and peer mentor in the Promotion of Underrepresented Minorities in Academic STEM (PUMA STEM) Alliance I feel like the programs really refined my skills and allowed me to get to that deeper understanding of the academic areas,” Zdenahlik said With University support for experiential learning Elmhurst students gain a professional edge that ensures they have the skills to succeed As someone who is passionate about the environment, Zdenahlik naturally appreciates Elmhurst’s arboretum campus and its commitment to sustainability But she has also seen that there is so much more to the University than simply being a nature-filled place—it’s also a caring community with a diverse student body that cultivates an inclusive space where all students feel supported to succeed “It’s a beautiful campus community,” Zdenahlik said where you have both people who live on campus and commuters transfer students and students who are here for all four years Zdenahlik also likes that she can relate to and see herself in her peers “I feel like I meet other transfer students pretty often and I appreciate that because I feel like we have mutually shared experiences of going through that process so there’s an understanding there that I really like,” Zdenahlik said “I love how Elmhurst encourages and embraces their transfer student body—it’s not looked down upon and I don’t feel like anyone would judge me With graduation quickly approaching in May, Zdenahlik is feeling grateful for her collegiate experience while looking forward to what’s next. After meeting with her PUMA STEM advisor about summer research opportunities, she secured an internship at Argonne National Laboratory where she will be working in the environmental science department “Now that I have my internship and things are falling into place, I’m ready to move on and graduate,” Zdenahlik said. Resources and services such as PUMA STEM or the Russell G. Weigand Career Center for Professional Excellence (WCCPE) equip students like Zdenahlik with opportunities to engage in the relevant hands-on practice needed to be prepared for whatever comes next Zdenahlik will be studying native grasses as an alternative to biofuels She wants to bring her environmental studies and economics degrees together to further explore the economy’s impact on and relationship with the environment No matter where her path may take her now and later on Go Far. lead a discussion about the Nobel Peace Prize and the current Nobel Peace Laureate as well as their own efforts to work toward peace on a local level “Path to Peace: Preserving Stories of Hope and Resilience,” will explore the Nobel Peace Prize selection process and the work being done by Nihon Hidankyo a group of Japanese survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that promotes nuclear disarmament and world peace through the power of story and personal testimonies Elmhurst Honors Program students will also share stories of hope and resilience from within the campus community and highlight the work of one of the University’s local peace partners a Chicago-area organization that welcomes and assists international refugees “Path to Peace: Preserving Stories of Hope and Resilience,” will begin at 5:00 p.m The event culminates a multi-part “Path to Peace” initiative led by professors Mary Kay Mulvaney and Erika McCombs that the Honors Program undertook during the spring semester as a participant in a new global collaboration called Partners in Peace launched last summer through a partnership between the National Collegiate Honors Council and the Nobel Peace Commission challenges college and university honors programs to propose a course or campus-wide activity that would foster a better understanding of the Nobel Peace Prize process and the practices of Nobel Peace Laureates as they “attempt to achieve harmony and collaboration between individuals.” Honors Program was one of 16 institutions nationwide to be selected to join the inaugural Partners in Peace effort Opportunities to participate in academic initiatives like Partners in Peace encourage Elmhurst students to develop a thirst for learning and an eagerness to embrace challenges with an open mind Home » Blog » How AI Is Revolutionizing Graduate Education: Meet Professor Network approached me a little while ago to tell me about an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant for education he developed for two of his graduate courses He used ChatGPT’s tool for creating custom GPTs following its template and feeding it with course materials such as the syllabus The results were impressive and support personalized learning expanding the scope of the role artificial intelligence can play in the future of higher education Kip called his first AI assistant Professor Network It supported personalized learning in a technical graduate-level class on computer networking Kip prepared the higher education AI assistant to handle technical questions like What is the best way to verify VLAN and routing setup using the tool to prepare students for experiences beyond the classroom Here’s the beginning of what Professor Network told me: You can test yourself with CCNA-style labs—and not only is this encouraged in MIT 565 it’s also built into the structure of the course The MIT 565 syllabus directly aligns with the CCNA 200-301 certification and provides hands-on labs through Cisco Packet Tracer These labs are modeled after real-world networking scenarios and help simulate exactly the kind of tasks you’d see on the CCNA 🔹 Examples of CCNA-Style Labs Included in the Course: This is rich and further contributes to the opportunities that AI can bring to higher education Kip’s other AI assistant supported personalized learning in his class on project management This assistant took students on a deeper dive into good practice for creating and managing projects I told the AI assistant that I need help getting started with my project plan I’d love to help you kick off your project plan You’ve already taken a big step by reaching out—so let’s lay the groundwork together Whether you’re building this plan for a class assignment Think of your project plan as the GPS for your project—it maps out how you’ll deliver what was approved in your Project Charter The level of detail depends on the size and complexity of your project 🧩 Key Elements of a Project Plan (with Starter Questions) Here’s a high-level checklist with guiding questions to get you started: What’s the high-level goal of your project Include a brief summary and objectives—this echoes your charter Define deliverables clearly to avoid scope creep Kip’s initial feedback on the impacts these AI assistants are having is promising One issue Kip raised was with students who were not actively participating in the class and engaging with the AI tools They found themselves farther behind than ever—especially in a higher education landscape that’s advancing just as quickly My favorite question for the assistant was and
