718-391-1589, MichaelsI@ddc.nyc.gov DEP: 718-595-6600 NY – The New York City Departments of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Design and Construction (DDC) today announced that work is underway to upgrade the drainage and water delivery infrastructure in the Staten Island neighborhood of Eltingville.  The $25 million project includes the addition of 100 new catch basins nearly three miles of new sewers and improvements to the Wood Duck Pond Bluebelt to help reduce flooding and protect the environment.  In addition more than two miles of new water mains and 34 newly added fire hydrants will ensure that residents businesses and firefighters have ready access to the City’s water supply.  DEP is providing the funding for the project while DDC is managing the construction which is anticipated to be completed in 2020 “This $25 million investment in Eltingville includes improvements to the Wood Duck Pond Bluebelt that will allow it to better manage stormwater and reduce localized street flooding,” said DEP Commissioner Vincent Sapienza “I want to thank our partners at DDC for working to preserve the natural beauty of the area while also making much needed infrastructure upgrades that will improve the quality of life in the neighborhood.” “This project is part of our ongoing partnership with DEP to upgrade infrastructure throughout Staten Island,” said DDC Commissioner Lorraine Grillo “We have over 20 active sewer projects in the borough and continue to invest to improve quality of life and beautify and preserve natural Bluebelt areas.” “Protecting Staten Island families and their homes from flooding requires a united effort from all levels of government Coastal projects like the seawall are the first line of defense but they also must be combined with flood mitigation projects further inland I want to thank the New York City Departments of Environmental Protection and Design and Construction for this investment that will give Eltingville residents some more peace of mind,” said Congressman Max Rose “This project will not only help to combat the flooding issues that have long plagued the area but will also aid in the safety of homes with the addition of fire hydrants and the beautification of a more active Wood Duck Pond,” said Council Member Joe Borelli This is a win for south shore residents and I appreciate DEP’s efforts working with us and the community to make this improvement.” “This project has offered a much-needed solution to many of Eltingville’s flooding problems,” said Assembly Member Nicole Malliotakis “It is great to see investment in the Bluebelt which plays a critical role in our drainage system as well as the ecology of the borough I look forward to seeing the results when the project is completed.” more than 6,800 linear feet of stormwater sewers and over 7,400 linear feet of sanitary sewers will be installed along Oakdale Street While the roadway is open to install the sewers the water mains will also be replaced with 10,600 linear feet of new pipes made of concrete-lined ductile iron which is more resilient and less prone to breakage than the cast iron pipes typically used decades ago This will improve water distribution in the area while the 34 new hydrants slated to be installed will ensure firefighters have ready access to the City’s water supply during emergencies.  Construction will also include 100 catch basins to help drain stormwater from the roadways improve street drainage and enhance the pond’s storage capacity DEP has built Bluebelts throughout southern Staten Island.  In the south Richmond and mid-Island areas the City has purchased approximately 400 acres to build the Bluebelt systems that support better drainage and wetland preservation with naturalized infrastructure The Bluebelts also provide important open spaces and serve as a habitat for diverse wildlife There are over 70 Bluebelts on Staten Island with additional sites in construction and being planned NYC is a trademark and service mark of the City of New York Privacy Policy. Terms of Use.  Back in those happy days before you could turn on the TV and hear a canned laughtrack echoing around some angular goofball in a Flash t-shirt Evan Dorkin's The Eltingville Club was delivering the funniest and most brutally sharp portrayal of the dregs of fandom that you could find after 20 years of comics stories and an animated pilot in 2002 it looks like a new two-issue miniseries from Dark Horse finally is the end of the Eltingville Club At New York Comic-Con we talked about the origins of the series in hate mail from Justice League fans and Dorkin's feelings on the animated pilot ComicsAlliance: Let's talk about Welcome to Eltingville Evan Dorkin: Welcome to Eltingville is the name of the failed pilot We thought if we called it The Eltingville Club people would think that it was going to be a show about comics that it would literally be a fan club type of show like a G4 show about the medium rather than a show with stories and characters because there's never been an Eltingville comic There's just been a bunch of short stories over the last 20 years it's a tragic story of four older teenagers who are fans and they're possibly some of the worst fans who have ever lived CA: They're the people that everyone who has ever worked at a comic book store hates they're also the people at the comic book store that everyone hates I worked in a store and I've been doing this for a whlie The characters came around because my then-publisher Dan Vado was writing for DC Comics and he was getting death threats and hate mail CA: Was this when he was writing Extreme Justice ED: He was doing the Justice League or something like that fictional characters who can never die because they'll never allow the copyright to go out so there's no reason to get upset your fake ghost character will show up again I was so angry and pissed off about the stuff he was reading to me People don't get this passionate about the government but they're going to be upset about a comic book So I was doing an anthology called Instant Piano for Dark Horse and I decided to write a story about four horrible fans CA: It's interesting that you had that good response but it seems like it's a tough sell for comics fans on a book that's about hating comics fans I did have a retailer freak out on me once at San Diego about my remarks at the Eisners once that came out of this stuff People don't like the book because they think that I shouldn't be so negative or that I portray stereotypes or pile on fandom There's different levels of fans fighting each other now This could've been about guys who paint themselves blue who love a team but call for the death of the manager and hate all the players CA: I think that's obvious to anyone who reads your work World's Funnest is not written by a guy who doesn't love those comics ED: That's what people didn't get or about K-9 before Doctor Who blew up -- who the hell ever thought that would happen that's like thinking there are fake girl fans You're demented if you think that people are going to go to conventions dressed as characters for.. they're allowed to do whatever the f**k they want that's legal But it's about people who complain about that It's about the worst aspects of fandom hate each other and live through their hobby CA: I got into Eltingville when the pilot came out I read the stories after I saw the cartoon CA: I was excited to see it because I knew you from Milk & Cheese and Dork and World's Funnest and I was working at a comic book store at the time ED: I worked in a comic store for six years If I'd remembered Drew Friedman did The Lord oF Eltingville in his old comics There's a part where the director gets crazy because Alien had a scene where someone says "he's in the bowels of the ship" and we have a "bowels of the ship" so maybe we should change it to "the basement of the ship?" You can't get too crazy like that I'd been fired from the fantastic store and all this came out of my experiences as a retailer a kid going to conventions when I was 13 by myself but that doesn't mean you can't criticize the worst aspects of it and some guy doesn't understand that I'm on the panel because I did a comic book about Batman and Superman I don't do that thing where I say I hate superheroes and keep getting superhero work like some people seem to Eltingville is about people who make insane choices the mother hires two interventionists to break her son of the habit and he ends up destroying them and getting them back into fandom after 15 hours of being tied up and screamed at like I know Frank X in Boise and I'm making fun of him and I get letters from people who see themselves in here -- "I see my friends in here When we're at the D&D game beating each other over the head and I'm just trying to settle a fight about beholders!" But this is me and my friends don't want to say some of these things CA: So this is the last Eltingville Club story I used to always say "Is this the end of the Eltingville Club?" because it was supposed to be a one-shot A lot of my stuff is just a one-shot that gets out of control Milk & Cheese was a cocktail napkin drawing Murder Family was done for a book called Epic Life that nobody ever read probably the lowest selling Marvel book other than Street Poet Ray "Bring Me the Head of Boba Fett," which was about an epic trivia contest to win the right to spend too much money on a Boba Fett doll That's the one we adapted into a pilot I think it made people think that it was just going to be four guys yelling trivia questions I still to this day don't know why the pilot failed but I don't know what they didn't like about it CA: I feel like if it would've come out two years later ED: It's really funny to see people talk about Eltingville, they'll throw a page online or mention it on Twitter, and invariably someone will say "He's ripping off KC Green He's ripping off Big Bang Theory!" I don't think anybody's ripping off anybody I think KC Green has acknowledged that he's an Eltingville reader I'm going "his characters don't act like my characters." I don't have a problem with it I think it's great that more people are doing things about fandom People ask "why do you write about comics so much," but it's okay if you're writing about novels or music or movies I don't mind if they find the work childish a medium we love and that people spend their lives in and buy stuff from and now is being adapted to every movie in the cineplex There was a zombie story in Dark Horse Presents about a year ago so they end up sabotaging the fast-moving zombies The first book is about the dissolution of the group they all run into each other ten years later at San Diego and basically try to come to terms together and hash things out Evan Dorkin's The Eltingville Club was delivering the funniest and most brutally sharp portrayal of the dregs of fandom sewers to address chronic flooding is most welcome news for the residents of Great Kills and Eltingville,” said U.S these neighborhoods have experienced property damage and headaches caused by heavy rains and lack of proper infrastructure We are pleased to see these projects completed.” “It has been clear for many years that a sewer system upgrade was desperately needed in the vicinity of Robinson Avenue I've visited with the residents here far too many times as they dealt with flooding concerns and the resulting property damage Even moderate storms often led to horrendous flooding along these streets,” said State Senator Andrew J “I appreciate the partnership of DEP and DOT as we navigated through some unique issues in this project area along with Borough President James Oddo and Council Member Joseph Borelli we were able to address the many concerns that local residents highlighted prior to and during construction the new pontoon gates will finally address a long present issue of seawater backing up into the storm sewers and onto the local streets during high tide events The enhanced capacity of the outfalls will positively impact the surrounding community.” “After years of Staten Islanders struggling from frequent flooding I'm confident that these long anticipated upgrades to our sewer systems and water mains will really turn a new leaf for Great Kills and Eltingvillle residents,” said Council Member Joseph C “I would like to thank our partners at NYC DEP NYC DOT and NYC DDC for their continued commitment to bring this project to fruition.” Over 2.3 miles (12,400 feet) of new storm sewers were installed to help alleviate flooding in the area and 440 feet of old storm sewers were replaced To better direct stormwater to the new sewers While the the end of Goodall Street measures 15-feet wide by 23.5-feet long by 7-feet high The outfall pipes that discharge the water from the new storm sewers into Great Kills Harbor/Crescent Beach which are connected to the chambers were upgraded and expanded as well The outfall by Armstrong Avenue and Tennyson Drive nearly doubled in capacity while the outfall by the end of Goodall Street and Tennyson Drive nearly quadrupled in capacity to handle the increased volume of water from the new storm sewers when it rains A headwall for one of the new storm sewer chambers being constructed behind a temporary cofferdam more than 2.7 miles (14,500 feet) of old water mains were replaced Fire protection was enhanced with the installation of 16 new fire hydrants and replacement of 33 old fire .st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Erik Bascome | tbascome@siadvance.comSTATEN ISLAND -- The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) will widen a crowded section of Amboy Road in Eltingville to increase vehicle capacity and provide designated turning lanes We need two lanes of traffic in that area and we need designated turning lanes," said Councilman Joseph Borelli (R-South Shore) Changes to the current street configuration were necessitated by the thriving businesses along the crowded strip of Amboy Road "It's become a heavily trafficked intersection with no signs of businesses slowing down More business means more cars trying to get into a tight area," Borelli said The project requires the acquisition of certain properties on Amboy Road through the New York State Eminent Domain Procedure Law Eminent domain refers to the government's right to seize private property for a public purpose The eminent domain procedure is an elaborate multi-step process that requires a public hearing be held to discuss the potential impacts of the project on the surrounding area the vast majority of properties along the path of construction have already agreed to dedicate the necessary land for public use allowing the government to acquire a portion of their property to serve the public good a small parcel of land (approximately 6-by-9 feet) attached to an establishment located on one of the corners on Amboy Road must go through the eminent domain acquisition process A DOT spokesperson said the agency believes there is more than adequate sidewalk space already in that area and "we believe that the space would be better used for the roadway." The widening project will double as a beautification project with the South Shore Business Improvement District approving a memorandum of understanding stating that they will maintain newly installed planters and medians "It's something that will really change the look of the town and give it a more quaint streetscape," said Borelli The widening of this roadway has been in the works since 2010 when then-Borough President James Molinaro and then-Councilman Vincent Ignizio called for the expansion of the busy thoroughfare The DOT would not provide an estimated start or completion date for the project Use of and/or registration on any portion of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement, (updated 8/1/2024) and acknowledgement of our Privacy Policy, and Your Privacy Choices and Rights (updated 1/1/2025) .st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}S.I A shocking incident captured on dash cam video shows the driver of a Honda Accord stopping in the middle of the Staten Island Expressway before pulling a bat out of his trunk and damaging a tractor trailer in an alleged road rage last week near the Clove Road exit of the expressway began after the driver of the Accord stopped in front of the truck in the center lane of the roadway Read the full story here. son among 4 indicted as probe into alleged bogus charity widens his mother and two other women set up a phony nonprofit group which purported to provide various city-funded services to the kids and the community But instead of doling out the cash for HIV/AIDS education the four members of Second Chance Resources Group Inc.’s board of directors pocketed more than $376,000 of taxpayer money in a years-long scheme Read the story here NYPD: Raid in Eltingville basement nets drugs; man Two neighbors were arrested after a raid of the basement of a home in Eltingville found a stash of drugs and drug paraphernalia who live next door to each other on the 300 block of Cortelyou Avenue were in the basement when officers armed with a search warrant raided Desiderio’s home at about 5:20 a.m according to the criminal complaint and police Read the full story here. The new Eltingville Lutheran School building was never completed but the developer was never able to complete all the intended homes The foundation for the new gym and building was poured the profit from the land sale remained unaccounted for according to several long-time congregation members who approached the Advance anonymously expressing concern about the mismanagement of funds and the future of the church and school The allegations and infighting have also taken their toll upon the school Enrollment is down to less than 75 students as families have left the school since September Some of the grades have only a handful of students The school had had an enrollment of 125 to 150 students whose families paid  about $5,000 per child in tuition The situation came to a head over the summer when the church board declined to re-appoint school principal Colleen McGuigan who taught third grade there before she was named principal in 2010 advising that McGuigan would not be returning in September The council subsequently met with parents to introduce new principal Joanne Riggio One parent said she made the decision in September to withdraw her two children from the school but we just didn't feel comfortable with the direction in which things seem to have been heading," she said Several long-time teachers left the school as well "Our hearts were in that school; we knew every child and family by name but it had become such a sad situation," said former teacher Sandra Glessner who was with the school for more than a decade The congregation has been without a pastor for months Sunday worship service that draws a dwindling number of participants Church Council President Ann Kornbrekke Thompson said concerns from parents and dissident members of the congregation were without merit "Our church and our school are still operating; we are operating as normal," Thompson said "The council did not renew the contract for our principal Some parents were upset with that," she added She referred further Advance questions to Bloomfield attorney Allyn J Repeated attempts to reach Crawford were unsuccessful Eltingville Lutheran Church was founded by Norwegians who heavily populated the South Shore at the turn of the 20th-century who was a charter member of the congregation and the contractor who built the church \n m_gallery = \"eltingville_lutheran_church_ha\";\n m_gallery_id = \"21439301\";\n m_gallery_title = \"Eltingville Lutheran Church has a long history on the South Shore\";\n m_gallery_blog_id = \"4499\";\n m_gallery_creation_date = \"Wednesday 10:02 AM\";\n m_gallery_permalink = \"http://photos.silive.com/4499/gallery/eltingville_lutheran_church_ha/index.html\";\n m_gallery_json = \"https://blog.silive.com/photogallery/4499/21439301.json\";\n m_gallery_pagetype = \"embed\";\n m_gallery_type = \"photo\";\n <\/script>\n Gallery: Eltingville Lutheran Church has a long history on the South Shore By: 3:00 pm on August 6 Staten Island-based Andrew Esposito has filed applications for twin three-story two-unit residential buildings spanning the lots at 322-326 Robinson Avenue in Eltingville (on Staten Island’s South Shore) The four total residential units will average 960 square feet apiece and each unit will have one off-street parking spot Stanley Krebushevski’s SMK Architect is the applicant of record and permits were filed in July to demolish the existing single-family home Subscribe to YIMBY’s daily e-mail Follow YIMBYgram for real-time photo updates Like YIMBY on Facebook Follow YIMBY’s Twitter for the latest in YIMBYnews This will destroy the suburban character of the neighborhood ga('send', 'event', 'beautyofblock', 'Impression', 'https://newyorkyimby.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Standard_336x280-100-2.jpg', { nonInteraction: true }); ADVERTISEMENT ga('send', 'event', 'PCRichards Builders Division', 'Impression', 'https://newyorkyimby.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/PCR_Beko_Compact_YIMB_336x280.jpg', { nonInteraction: true }); ga('send', 'event', 'yimby+', 'Impression', 'https://newyorkyimby.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/image.png', { nonInteraction: true }); Follow on Instagram var sb_instagram_js_options = {"font_method":"svg","placeholder":"https:\/\/newyorkyimby.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/instagram-feed\/img\/placeholder.png","resized_url":"https:\/\/newyorkyimby.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sb-instagram-feed-images\/","ajax_url":"https:\/\/newyorkyimby.com\/wp-admin\/admin-ajax.php"}; © COPYRIGHT New York YIMBY® LLC YIMBY IS A REGISTERED TRADEMARK OF NIKOLAI FEDAK / NEW YORK YIMBY LLC Maresca created this Life Tributes page to make it easy to share your memories TV is usually a good home for comic book characters But it wasn't for these unfortunate heroes.. Television has long been a good home for comic book heroes from early shows like The Incredible Hulk and Adam West's Batman on to more recent successes like Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D and Arrow While the past couple of years have continued the great success of comic book movies and more has arugably been felt to an even greater extent on the small screen Nowadays there are simply an overwhelming amount of projects on TV or in development there'€™s a comic book TV series waiting for you to indulge in there have been a fair amount of comic book shows that have gotten the axe way before their time some of these shows never even made it past one episode While most of these shows probably deserved to get cancelled quite a few of them feel like missed opportunities From a show that tried to turn the Man Of Steel into a crime-fighting canine to multiple attempts to bring an iconic superheroine to the masses; this list will be shining a retrospective light on these Able to fly around the world faster than you can say Superpup The Adventures Of Superpup is exactly what you're thinking: Television producer Whitney Ellsworth created a pilot that placed the Superman mythos into a fictional universe populated by dogs instead of human beings Instead of Lois Lane we have Pamela Poodle And instead of Perry White we have Terry Bite The live-action actors were placed in dog-suits to portray the characters The pilot episode focuses on Professor Sheepdip After attempting to blow up the Daily Bugle (not to be confused with Peter Parker's workplace) he kidnaps Pamela and ties her to a rocket shows up at the last minute to save the day This show would have been as ridiculous as you could ever imagine there are enough (unintentional) funny moments throughout this pilot that it would have been quite interesting to see it go for several more episodes WhatCulture is part of Future plc, an international media group and leading digital publisher.
