Print Low-budget action movie producer Randall Emmett recently unveiled a high-profile collaboration with Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese to bring the story of a deadly 1982 avalanche near Lake Tahoe to the big screen
The project, “Wall of White,” is being produced and financed by Emmett’s production firm, Convergence Entertainment Group, according to Hollywood trade site Deadline.
But the Writers Guild of America West issued an advisory Wednesday forbidding its members from working on the film.
The guild cited Emmett’s failure to pay writers for work on past projects. Since 2020, Emmett has been on the guild’s “strike list.”
Hollywood Inc.
The ex-fiance of reality star Lala Kent faces the collapse of his company amid a trail of lawsuits
civil fraud charges and allegations of abusive behavior
“Emmett has a long history of refusing to honor obligations to writers and the Guild has filed numerous arbitration claims against companies owned by Emmett over the last decade,” the WGA said in the email
adding that guild rules “prohibit members from working for or selling literary material to companies or individuals who are on the Strike/Unfair List.”
Scorsese and his representatives were not immediately available for comment
and we have every intention to settle this dispute in the coming weeks,” Emmett told The Times
“Our representatives will be reaching out to the Writers Guild so we can put this matter from six years ago behind us.”
told The Times: “Emmett has stated multiple times in the past that he would pay and never has.”
Emmett was the subject of a 2022 Times investigation and subsequent Hulu documentary that surfaced allegations of abuse against women and assistants as well as mistreatment of assistants and business partners
The “Wall of White” project draws on a 2010 book as well as a 2021 documentary
“Buried: The 1982 Alpine Meadows Avalanche.” After a heavy spring storm in Northern California in 1982
tons of snow roared down a mountain and into a village
and rescuers pulled one woman from the wreckage
Book author Jennifer Woodlief also is listed as a screenwriter
Emmett has been working on the project for about a year and introduced the Netflix documentary to Scorsese, according to a March article in the Tahoe Guide, which touted how the local tragedy was being adapted into a feature film by Convergence and Scorsese.
The article cited a news release from Realization Films, a Northern California firm that includes the “Buried” documentary producers, Jared Drake and Steven Siig, as well as executive producer Mark Gogolewski. All have signed on to the Emmett project, according to their website.
The news reports said the movie was expected to go into production this year. No director has been attached.
Whether he’s going by Emmett or Ives, the controversial producer and former ‘Vanderpump Rules’ star continues to confront allegations of not paying his bills on time and presiding over chaotic film sets.
Emmett formed Convergence Entertainment Group in early 2022 with Miami financier Joel Cohen, according to Nevada business records. By that time, Emmett’s longtime shingle Emmett/Furla Oasis had collapsed under the weight of millions of dollars of debt to former financiers and co-producers.
The Writers Guild of America West won a $541,464 judgment against the now-defunct Emmett/Furla Oasis company in 2021 after it filed a claim on behalf of writers who alleged they were shortchanged for their work in 2019 on a television series that was supposed to feature former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. But the actor backed out and the show was never made.
With interest, the debt now tops $700,000, the guild says.
Last summer, the union added another firm that was created to buy source material for Emmett projects, 50 Feet Movies, to its strike list.
“We want to make sure that every WGA member knows about this project, and knows that they cannot work for Convergence Entertainment Group ... in connection with this project or any other project,” Azari said in an interview. “They cannot work for Randall Emmett.”
the controversial producer and former ‘Vanderpump Rules’ star continues to confront allegations of not paying his bills on time and presiding over chaotic film sets
Despite the demise of his former production company
Emmett continues to to line up producing partners and big-name stars to make his small-budget films
His association with Scorsese dates back more than a decade. In 2013, Emmett became an unlikely savior for Scorsese, who had tried for 15 years to secure financing for a project about Portuguese Jesuit priests in the 17th century investigating Catholic persecution
None of the major studios would touch “Silence,” but after a call from Scorsese’s agent
Emmett and his then-partner George Furla reportedly raised half of the $46.5-million budget for the film featuring Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield.
In exchange for backing “Silence,” Emmett earned a producing credit — and eventually an Oscar nomination — on Scorsese’s next film, the 2019 mob epic “The Irishman” for Netflix.

Saturday’s main card at the UFC APEX provided a little bit of everything
Torrez Finney opened things with a tepid decision win over TUF finalist Robert Valentin before Ode’ Osbourne snapped a three-fight skid with a second-round stoppage win over newcomer Luis Gurule
Brad Tavares followed by out-hustling Gerald Meerschaert
tying Michael Bisping for the most wins in UFC middleweight division history
with Road to UFC bantamweight winner ChangHo Lee turning in an emphatic second-round stoppage win over Cortavious Romious in the next fight
mauling Joanderson Brito on the canvas to register his second straight win before Lerone Murphy racked up his eighth straight UFC win
out-hustling Josh Emmett in the main event
It was an entertaining night of fights in Las Vegas
and we have the details on what transpired for your review below
Prelim Results | Official Scorecards | Watch Replay on ESPN+
Lerone Murphy ran his winning streak to eight
delivering a patient and varied offensive effort to out-work Top 10 mainstay Josh Emmett in the finale of this weekend’s fight card at the UFC APEX
The Manchester Top Team leader mixed things up well throughout, changing stances, targeting all levels, and attacking with a multitude of strikes to keep the Sacramento powerhouse from getting into a rhythm and having opportunities to unleash his right hand too often
including a high amplitude slam in the second
Murphy’s movement and output allowed him to dictate the terms of engagement more often than naught
Pat Sabatini turned in a dominant effort in the co-main event
needing a single takedown in each round to register more than 13 minutes of ground control time while collecting his second straight win
The Philadelphia native put Joanderson Brito on the canvas early and without much resistance in every round, quickly working to dominant positions before spending the remainder of the frame roughing up the Brazilian and trying to find openings for submissions
this was one-way traffic the whole way through and a stellar effort for Sabatini
That’s now consecutive victories for the soft-spoken Marquez MMA representative, who said he wants to “climb the mountain, because the top of the mountain has the greatest views,” leaving Michael Bisping speechless. | Prelim Results | Official Scorecards
ChangHo Lee has said he wants to be “The South Korean Khabib,” and while he’s still green
there were some moments reminiscent of the former lightweight champion in his dominant win over Cortavious Romious on Saturday
The Road to UFC Season 2 bantamweight tournament winner took advantage of Romious being overly aggressive in both the first and second rounds
using shifts in position to land on top and punish the Dana White’s Contender Series grad
Lee unleashed a barrage of elbows that brought about the stoppage
Despite having a combined 47 prior UFC appearances
Brad Tavares and Gerald Meerschaert had never crossed paths until midway through Saturday’s main card
In space, it was all Tavares, with the Xtreme Couture mainstay flashing the snappy boxing that has been his signature through his 15-year career inside the Octagon.
He largely kept Meerschaert off him
the Hawaiian did well to keep himself upright and stay out of dangerous positions on the ground with the most prolific submission finisher in middleweight history
Ode’ Osbourne won the battle of flyweight DWCS alums between him and UFC freshman Luis Gurule
kicking off the finishing sequence with a left-handed snipe
The Class of ’19 grad was the quicker and sharper of the two in the striking department from the outset
but was put on the canvas and held there for the back half of the opening round.
Back on the feet to open the second, Osbourne countered a naked low kick with a laser-sighted left hand that found Gurule’s chin and sent the recent grad crashing to the canvas in a heap
opening the door for the Las Vegas resident to pound out the finish
Torrez Finney used his superior wrestling to grind out a victory over Robert Valentin in his promotional debut to kick off Saturday’s main card
A three-time winner on Dana White’s Contender Series
Finney went back to the approach that drew the ire of the UFC CEO
using lifts and top control to control Valentin on the ground and along the fence
rarely offering much in the way of meaningful damage.
The compact and heavily muscled middleweight tired as the fight progressed, giving Valentin an opening to score with elbows and punches while being shoved into the fence in the third

Murphy has yet to suffer a loss in his professional career

He has won each of his past three fights by unanimous decision

Editor's note: Responses have been edited for brevity and clarity
How Emmett wins: Emmett has fight-altering power. That was evident in his fights against Mitchell, Ricardo Lamas and Michael Johnson
He's had some time off for recovery from injury
but his people told me that he is feeling better than ever
Emmett's team said he will be competing with more physicality than he has in a long time
How Murphy wins: Murphy sold me with his performance against Edson Barboza
He has great tools at his disposal and he knows when to use them
switches stances and understands how to get out of tough situations
His speed and versatility should allow him to run laps around Emmett
He will fight smart but can be aggressive when necessary
Murphy can put on a clinic against Emmett if he puts all of his tools to use
The smaller Octagon at the UFC Apex favors Emmett because it will limit Murphy's movement
He may be able to corner Murphy and force him to trade punches

This should be a fun fight for as long as it lasts
this fight ends only one of two ways: either Sabatini gets the submission or Brito gets the knockout
And it's more likely that Brito gets it done here
We have seen Brito's opponents shoot for a lazy takedown attempt after getting rocked
Barbosa to win inside the distance. Although she lost a decision to Miranda Maverick in her second fight in the UFC
Barbosa still performed well and showed she belongs in the promotion
She is currently the biggest favorite on the card but only slightly favored to win inside the distance
Two out of Belbita's five losses have come via submission
and considering Barbosa has earned three of her seven wins by submission
This should be a showcase fight for Barbosa
goes head-to-head with Andrey Koreshkov in the main event at PFL First Round: Welterweights & Featherweights on Thursday night. Photo by Cooper Neill/Getty ImagesWelterweight: Jason Jackson vs
Koreshkov has proved to be a devastating striker with fight-ending kicks
he needs to keep this fight standing and strike from distance
but the biggest disparity is the grappling and wrestling
Look for Jackson to use his striking to close the distance on Koreshkov and eventually take the fight to the ground
I expect Jackson to outwrestle Koreshkov for the better part of the fight and get the win
Khaybulaev to win by submission or decision
Khaybulaev returns to the PFL hoping to become a two-time champion
because Khaybulaev is undefeated and has shown no weaknesses in his game
Unless Kennedy catches him with a flash knockout
this will be a dominant performance from Khaybulaev
Look for Khaybulaev to close the distance and smother Kennedy for the better part of three rounds

Saturday brought the action inside the Octagon back home to Las Vegas
as the UFC APEX played host to a quality Fight Night event headlined by featherweight standouts Josh Emmett and Lerone Murphy
Before the 145-pound hopefuls hit the cage to close out the main card
a half-dozen preliminary card pairs made the walk
setting the table for the next six sets of competitors that followed
Following a string of competitive decisions to open the card
Ireland’s Rhys McKee collected the first finish — and his first UFC triumph — with a stoppage win over newcomer Daniel Frunza before Dione Barbosa wrapped up the early slate with a first-round submission win over Diana Belbita
If you missed any of the action or simply want a refresher on what transpired
check out the recaps below and be sure to join us for the main card as well
Main Card Results | Official Scorecards | Watch Replay on ESPN+
Dione Barbosa took a minute to get settled in on Saturday night
“The Witch” made quick work of Diana Belbita on the ground
sinking in a deep arm triangle choke to secure the first-round submission finish
scoring with a couple quality overhand rights that caught Barbosa flush as the Brazilian was initially happy to engage on the feet
Ontario native felt like the two were going to continue to throw down
as Barbosa worked to lock up the submission
Rhys McKee finally collected his first UFC victory
battering Dana White’s Contender Series grad Daniel Frunza to the point where the newcomer was unable to continue following the opening five minutes
“Skeletor” was sharp from the jump
dropping him multiple times in the first half of the round.
While the Romanian was able to steady himself and make it to the horn
including a slashed lip reminiscent of Robbie Lawler’s upper lip in his epic clash with Rory MacDonald at UFC 189
was deemed too much to allow him to continue fighting
Fighting for the first time in over a year
Loma Lookboonmee returned and extended her winning streak to four
grinding out a hard-fought win over the perpetually game Istela Nunes
This was a competitive fight where neither strawweight was truly able to dominate the action, with each having their moments, and the Thai fighter simply doing a little more.
Deadlocked heading into the third, Lookboonmee was the more effective, putting Nunes on the canvas a couple times with trips
working from top position while her Brazilian counterpart was unable to work back to her feet
Victor Henry and Pedro Falcao got into a fun, scrambly scrap in the middle of Saturday’s prelims, with the former coming away on the happy side of the results
The Josh Barnett protege was just a little sharper and a little ahead the whole way through, dropping Falcao in the opening round with a clean right hand
hurting him again in the waning moments of the fight when the Contender Series graduate’s gas tank was running on empty.
Each time Falcao had a positive moment like taking Henry to the ground
the veteran showed his class by reversing into top position and swiftly reclaiming control of the contest
Martin Buday picked up his sixth UFC victory in seven starts on Saturday
as short-notice newcomer Uran Satybaldiev gave him all he could handle
The burly Slovakian leaned on his experience to get the better of things for much of the contest
forcing the undersized Satybaldiev to carry his considerable weight and generally roughing him up in tight
To his credit, the newcomer from Kyrgyzstan had his moments
wobbling Buday in the third and showing spirit through to the final horn in what feels like a performance to remember for when he makes his sophomore appearance later in the year
Talita Alencar opened the action at the UFC APEX by showcasing her world-class top game
grinding out a unanimous decision win over Vanessa Demopoulos
In all three rounds, the world champion Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt put Demopoulos on the canvas
spending prolonged periods working from top position
landing sporadic blows and shutting down any attempts her opponent made to chase a submission from underneath.
While there was never a point where Demopoulos was in serious danger of getting finished
Alencar was clearly the superior grappler of the two and cooked her on the ground for 15 minutes

Omaha World Herald's Sam McKewon breaks down the Nebraska's spring game at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln on Saturday
Emmett Johnson enters a season as the indisputable go-to option in Nebraska’s backfield
He staked his claim to be the primary running back by averaging 86 yards per game over the last three contests of 2024
he changed his mind about entering the transfer portal
and suddenly a running back room that was once crowded and veteran-heavy had been whittled down to one player with significant college experience
It’s something of a reset for a group that went through a trying
NU didn’t always have a complementary ground game for quarterback Dylan Raiola
new options under a new offensive coordinator will try to become more of a collective asset
“We have a lot of running backs that can do a lot of different things,” Johnson said
A lot of younger guys that are coming out of high school but can do both … a lot of speed in the room
so that’s what you’re gonna see out there is a great group of guys that are versatile and is willing to do whatever for the team to win.”
The question for Johnson is now whether he can be the dynamic runner he was in November and December over an entire season
no longer in a timeshare with Dowdell and Rahmir Johnson
the past three years have been a gradual build
His redshirt junior season could the continuation of a once-overlooked high school recruit's rise
Kwinten Ives was buried on the depth chart last season but now finds himself as the potential secondary option
Conor Booth is an intriguing piece as an in-state freshman coming off of a historically great senior season at Bishop Neumann
Jamarion Parker is the other true freshman
Mekhi Nelson appeared in one game while redshirting in 2024
he could be a candidate to emerge after development behind the scenes
Matt Rhule has sung the praises of Ives for the past two years
The redshirt sophomore has spent most of that time on special teams
sporadically getting snaps with the offense
But with the logjam of veterans in front of him gone
Ives has a chance to be a contributor in his third season in scarlet and cream
especially without another obvious candidate to spell Johnson
Can Nebraska consistently generate explosive plays on the ground
The Huskers’ running game was more of a pickup truck than a Ferrari last year and contributed to some of the team’s midseason offensive stagnation
and a ground attack that can more frequently relieve the pressure would be a boon to his development
north-south runner who could lower his shoulder and power over tacklers on third down
His departure left the Huskers looking for a replacement
Barthel said after an early-April practice that Ives had impressed in that role
could also line up in the backfield when a yard or two is needed
» Johnson focused on improving as a receiver and route runner over the offseason
trying to get better at playing through contact
running through defenders and stiff-arming
“I’m still trying to be the best running back in the country.”

Stanford transfer wide receiver Emmett Mosley V signed with Texas on Monday
Mosley, the No. 8 player in ESPN's spring transfer rankings, chose to continue his career with the Longhorns after also visiting Virginia
He has three seasons of eligibility remaining
205-pound wideout led all ACC freshmen with 48 catches last season and produced 525 receiving yards and six touchdowns in his debut season with the Cardinal
Mosley entered the transfer portal earlier this month after Stanford fired coach Troy Taylor
have both been limited by injuries this spring
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian has told reporters he's also looking to add help at tight end and on the defensive line when the spring transfer portal window officially opens Wednesday
The Longhorns brought in five transfers this offseason as they look to build on their 13-3 season
which came to an end in the College Football Playoff semifinals

His assailants—the white woman’s husband and his brother—made Emmett carry a 75-pound cotton gin fan to the bank of the Tallahatchie River and ordered him to take off his clothes
shot him in the head and then threw his body
tied to the cotton gin fan with barbed wire
14-year-old Emmett Till reportedly flirted with a white cashier in Money
His murder galvanized the emerging Civil Rights Movement
Till grew up in a working-class neighborhood on the south side of Chicago
and though he had attended a segregated elementary school
he was not prepared for the level of segregation he encountered in Mississippi
His mother warned him to take care because of his race
while standing with his cousins and some friends outside a country store in Money
Emmett bragged that his girlfriend back home was white
dared Emmett to ask the white woman sitting behind the store counter for a date
but Carolyn Bryant—the woman behind the counter—later claimed that he grabbed her
made lewd advances and wolf-whistled at her as he sauntered out
They will never get their names in the history books
yet the foot soldiers of the Civil Rights movement changed history for the better through their unsung acts of courage
the proprietor of the store and the woman’s husband
returned from a business trip a few days later and heard how Emmett had allegedly spoken to his wife
Milam in the early morning hours of August 28
and perhaps beating Till in a toolhouse behind Milam’s residence
they drove him down to the Tallahatchie River
his corpse was recovered but was so disfigured that Mose Wright could only identify it by an initialed ring
Authorities wanted to bury the body quickly
she decided to have an open-casket funeral so that all the world could see what racist murderers had done to her only son
and soon the mainstream media picked up on the story
Less than two weeks after Emmett’s body was buried
Milam and Bryant went on trial in a segregated courthouse in Sumner
There were few witnesses besides Mose Wright
who positively identified the defendants as Emmett’s killers
the all-white jury deliberated for less than an hour before issuing a verdict of “not guilty,” explaining that they believed the state had failed to prove the identity of the body
Many people around the country were outraged by the decision and also by the state’s decision not to indict Milam and Bryant on the separate charge of kidnapping
In March of 2022, President Joe Biden signed the Emmett Till Antilynching Act into law, making lynching a federal hate crime.

Convinced they will have a better chance surviving the desert than the raging rapids that lay ahead, three men leave John Wesley Powell’s expedition through the Grand Canyon and scale the cliffs to the plateau above. King Cetshwayo, the last great ruler of Zululand, is captured by the British following his defeat in the British-Zulu War. He was subsequently sent into exile. As the presidential election of 1952 begins to heat up, so do accusations and counteraccusations concerning communism in America. The “Red Scare”—the widespread belief that international communism was operating in the United States—came to dominate much of the debate between Democrats and Republicans in 1952. On August 28, 1952, the New York Times front page […]

Halfway through our first meal at Emmett—in this case, by the third dish–we had to stop and take a beat. Not because Middle Eastern food is novel in this town. And definitely not because Mediterranean is new to us
But because we’ve never had the combination done as deliciously as this
At Emmett, having an array of confident, complex dishes isn’t the issue. Getting to try most of them is. You can order a la carte, but the four-course, $105 tasting menu is a steal—portions are huge and cover nearly all of the bases.
UnmuteAs sophisticated as its food is, Emmett doesn’t take itself so seriously. It’s as buzzy and exciting for a big deal date night as it is for a seven-year-old celebrating her birthday over Shirley Temples and sujuk cappelletti (true story). And it’s as common for the servers to go into detail on Middle Eastern spices as it is for them to joke with boozy guests over a playlist of early-aughts hip hop.
During the week, do as the neighbors do and pop in to the bar for cocktails and snacks. But know that come Saturday night, the lights are low, the PA wine is flowing, and canoodling over lamb merguez is the name of the game. The seats fill up, quickly. So plan ahead. Make the reservation. Not because Middle Eastern-meets-Mediterranean food is so original. But in the world of Philly restaurants, Emmett is.

And welcome back to the weekly Foobooz food news round-up
We’ve just got a few quick things to get to this week
including (but not limited to) details on the opening of Emmett
a little beer news that’ll really make some of you feel your age
and some VERY good news coming out of Chinatown
one of my favorite restaurants in Philly lived at 161 West Girard Avenue
and because Snyder had spent so long just trying to find a space that would fit his vision
he and van der Tak were planning on opening it fast
Inside Emmett’s dining room / Photograph by Mike Prince
I just got the heads-up that they now have an opening date: Tuesday
That’s about a two-month turnaround for any of you keeping track
And while it helps that the space has already been two different well-designed restaurants (and that most of the build-out has been purely cosmetic
with the exception of putting in an eight-seat bar)
that’s still remarkably quick in this day and age of projects that take months (or sometimes years) to actually open the doors
Snyder comes to Kensington after a career spent in the industry
he did time in Michelin-starred kitchens in Washington D.C
and spent a year doing pop-ups at more Philly restaurants than I have room to name here
and Jean-Georges Vongerichten before trying his hand on the retail side of things with Samuels & Son Seafood
with a tasting menu coming once the staff is settled
Considering the broad sphere of influence they’re working from in the kitchen
He’s got everything from crudos to fresh pasta
and coal-roasted beets from the wood-fired oven
I can also remember being on the menu at Cadence
and smoked mustard; tuna with Calabrian chili and za’atar; rockfish in Moroccan curry; and agnolotti with black walnut mugummara all have space on the eclectic board
having been worked out during all those months of pop-ups
was inspirational for Snyder because there’s not a single dish on the opening menu that isn’t operating from a couple of different places at once
The winter squash toast comes on focaccia with a butternut ‘nduja and Spanish goat cheese
And I can’t even remember the last time I saw anyone doing confit mussels
From left: Melanzana made with barrel rested gin
turmeric; Night Moose made with bitter aperitivo
saline at Emmett / Photographs by Mike Prince
Snyder and van der Tak picked up Marissa Chirico from River Twice to run front-of-house and the wine program
Petra Manchina has the bar — which is a good
local fit since she’s spent the last seven years on the floor with Manatawny and Philadelphia Distilling
The cocktail menu will be an ever-changing thing
hoping to match the kitchen in its variety and influence
and that alone gives the place a leg up over Cadence (which was solidly BYO
start to finish) and will change the flow and vibe of the space even if we’re looking at a 38-seat
will be essentially unchanged — at least until the spring
Opening night is two weeks from today, but reservations are available right now
So keep Emmett in mind when you’re making your plans
Chinatown lion dance parade / Photograph by Laura Swartz
The news broke on Sunday: The Sixers and Comcast Spectacor (who own the Wells Fargo Center
the Sixers’ current home) had cut a deal that would keep the team in South Philly rather than moving forward with the ill-considered
and generally super shitty plan to build a brand new stadium right in the middle of Center City
But now that it has all been settled, here’s what we know: Comcast Spectacor and Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (which owns the Sixers) are going halfsies on a brand-new arena in South Philly that should open sometime around 2031
Said arena (which Comcast will have the naming rights to) will be the new home for both the 76ers and the Flyers
Comcast and the Phillies have an additional deal to continue building out the South Philly sports complex with additional entertainment options
And there’s still some room to maneuver now when it comes to actually discussing a reasonable plan to revitalize Market East and help out Chinatown — without the tectonic reshaping of the area that would be caused by the construction and operation of an 18,000-seat sports arena dropped into the middle of the city
So was it a doomed plan from the start? Was it all nothing but a bunch of high-stakes posturing and fiduciary infighting that sucked in the mayor
and all of us as unwitting pawns in a game played out between billionaires
Chinatown dodged what may or may not have been a purely hypothetical bullet AND will (maybe) come out of this with a redeveloped Market East (at some nebulous and ill-defined point in the future) and a commitment from the mayor’s office to offer additional support to Chinatown residents and businesses
If you’re looking for some more detail (and a little historical perspective from someone who has been watching this process unfold for a long time), Laura Swartz had an excellent explainer yesterday — which you can read right here
South Philly will get a new arena and “the country’s top sports and entertainment district” (according to a statement from Dan Hilferty
You guys have plans for Chinese New Year yet
At Kampar
Ange Branca and her crew have put together a four-course Chinese-Malaysian New Year menu that’ll be available from January 29th to February 1st
YEE SANG: PROSPERITY SALADBranca learned this one from her mom
built for excess and made from 18 ingredients
“each one carefully selected to symbolize good fortune
and all the wonderful things one could hope for in the new year!” according to Branca
POON CHOY: A BASIN FEASTPoon choy is a Hakka dish that’s essentially an entire party feast
It’s nine layers of prime meats and seafoods meant to “signify abundance and affluence.” You eat it one layer at a time
from top to bottom — and then suddenly remember that you still have two courses to go before dinner is done
SALTED FISH FRIED RICECantonese-style fried rice made with house-cured fish and served with a traditional hot Chinese tea
TONG SUIAnd then one more Cantonese specialty to round out the night
in this case made with longan fruit and snow fungus
Tong sui restaurants are popping up all over the place these days (particularly on the West Coast)
Tickets for the Chinese New Year dinner will run you $138 (not including drinks, tax, or tip), and reservations are very much required. Get yours here
A couple of days before Kampar kicks off their Chinese New Year menu, Com.Unity is doing its second annual Tet dinner to celebrate Vietnamese New Year
This one will be on Monday, January 27th, at Le Viet and will be a six-course collaboration dinner featuring Andrew Dinh Vo from Cafe Nhan
I have no doubt it’s going to be a helluva dinner
Add to that a lion dance from Chinatown’s own Philadelphia Suns
Tickets for this one are $108. First seating is at 5 p.m., and they’ll likely be adding a second, 7:30 p.m. seating as well, but I would definitely keep an eye on the reservations because this one is going to sell out fast. Get your reservations here
Cantina La Martina will be celebrating its third annual La Tamalada event February 2nd
/ Photograph courtesy of Cantina La Martina
Dionicio Jimenez’s Cantina La Martina will be spending February 2nd hosting its third annual Tamalada — a day-long celebration of the tamale
of all the food items that truly deserve a day spent celebrating them
Cantina will be hosting the event from 11 a.m
featuring local restaurants and street vendors
there’ll be a tamale contest to pick the best of the best
The whole thing will be held outside (obviously)
and Cantina La Martina has a heated tent for outdoor dining
but last year’s Tamalada drew such a big crowd that the party spilled over into pretty much every inch of usable outdoor space
Inside Curtain Call / Photograph courtesy of Ensemble Arts
No, for real. This one kinda snuck up on me, too. But I just got word that Curtain Call (which is the actual name) is opening to the public tonight and
will operate as an all-day cafe with service Tuesday through Saturday
it will run as a “welcoming cafe where patrons can enjoy their favorite hot beverages
and elevated sandwiches in a relaxed atmosphere,” and at night
they’ll turn down the lights and become a cocktail bar serving drinks and small plates
The menu is short and sweet (mortadella toast
crudités) and feels more like a catered reception than an actual restaurant
Maybe that’s exactly what this space needs — something simple and straightforward may be the best way to start over
they’ll have happy hour on weekdays from 4 p.m
and will stay open late on performance nights
Sweetgreen will donate a meal to the local community organization
do you remember when you had your first Nugget Nectar
And then remember to sign up for your AARP membership because the flagship dry-hopped and legitimately famous seasonal beer from Tröegs is turning 21 years old this year
the Tröegs team is throwing a four-day-long birthday celebration at their Hershey
“Nugget Weekend” will run from Thursday, January 16th, to Sunday the 19th and feature, among other things, a draft-only release of a 9.5% ABV “Double Nugget Nectar,” early samples of “Nitro Nugget” (a smooth and creamy version, carbonated with nitrogen), a chef’s dinner with an open bar and multi-course Nugget-inspired tasting menu (tickets available here)
and food specials at the Brewery’s Snack Bar
If you’re down, you can find more details on Nugget Nectar’s birthday weekend here and here.

Health News | Volunteer
The 2024 North Carolina Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards winners include two ECU Health Medical Center volunteers, one ECU Health team member and the ECU Health Beaufort Hospital volunteer team
the award honors the true spirit of volunteerism by recognizing individuals and groups who make a significant contribution to their community through volunteer service
nonprofit and private sectors may be nominated for this award
Emmanuel Bryant has volunteering in his blood
“My mom founded a nonprofit in Durham to prevent teenage drug and alcohol abuse
and she was a founding board member of the IDYL Charter School,” he said
“I grew up volunteering and I believe it’s important to give back to the community.” The Durham native also grew up knowing he wanted to work in health care
but his plans shifted from wanting to be a doctor to pursuing a career as a physician assistant (PA) after attending a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill medical school program for high school students
“It was a nine-week program with different people sharing information about the various specialties and aspects of medicine,” he said
Bryant attended ECU to get his bachelor’s degree in public health with a pre-health concentration. He graduated in 2023, and he needed a certain number of volunteer hours to apply to PA school. “I did research with the Brody School of Medicine and worked in home health with children with autism,” he said
Then a friend of his suggested he look into volunteering at the ECU Health Medical Center
“I worked in patient transport and some in outpatient rehabilitation,” he said
including Emmett (Floyd) – he’s an awesome guy and he showed me a lot of things
During his time helping with rehabilitation
Bryant said he got to work alongside Shane Whitley
“I learned about breaking up scar tissue and stress tests
It was one of my favorite areas to work.” He also worked in the Cancer Center
where he saw many patients ring the bell to signify their last cancer treatment
and the nurses there are elite in their skills.”
His experience as a volunteer has set the stage for success in his pursuit of being a PA
“It has helped me get comfortable with patients
Everyone is different and all come from different backgrounds,” he said
“Exposure to these differences is the best way to combat discrimination
and it helps us know we’re all human.” The work also helped Bryant better understand how hospitals work and how to collaborate with different professionals and personalities
Bryant said he felt blessed give back to a community that has given him
“I felt like it was my duty to give back,” he said
Emmett Floyd moved to North Carolina to attend Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) in Wilson
he was a teacher and a coach until he was drafted into the army in 1967
he returned to work as an educator and coach until he decided to pursue his master’s degree in educational leadership at East Carolina University (ECU)
after which I joined the faculty at ECU in the College of Education,” he said
he still worked for the College until 2010
when he became the executive director of the ECU Pirate Club
I finally retired for good at age 69,” he said
That volunteer work included serving as vice chairman of the local Chamber of Commerce
A chat with a fellow ECU colleague – and a previous NC Governor’s Volunteer Service Award winner – Frank Crawley
inspired him to look into volunteer work at the ECU Health Medical Center
“There’s a few of us who all know each other from ECU
and they were all working the Tuesday morning shift
helping patients get to where they need to go
“I pick them up and take them to endoscopy or GI or up to their hospital rooms
And there’s not a day I don’t get a thank you from them
Floyd also likes the camaraderie of working with his fellow volunteers
“We have a lot of students who come in during the summers
and they sit and listen to old men talk about things
and then we get them to share about themselves
While he was surprised to learn he won the volunteer award
“I’m just one who represents the 300 or more members of our team.” He also said he is happy to be able to give back to the community
and we’ve benefitted from our time here,” he said
and volunteer work is one way to do that.” Those who volunteer for ECU Health
find their own way to use their skill sets to help others
“I met a woman who rocks babies in the NICU,” he said
ECU Health Volunteer Services
to the late Jim Holt and Rossie Daniels Holt
he proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force
where he served as a fire protection specialist
His dedication and expertise led him to a distinguished career in civil service as the Assistant Fire Chief at Robins Air Force Base
he channeled his love for the outdoors into owning and operating his own landscaping business
Emmett will be missed by those who had the pleasure of knowing him
His memory will forever be treasured by his seven children
a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren
and many other loving family members and friends

Evan Snyder's Emmett has brought a special-occasion aura back to this South Kensington corner
Evan Snyder grew up in Newtown loving his Israeli grandmother’s stuffed cabbage
an Ashkenazi-style comfort classic rolled around beef and rice in sweet and sour tomato sauce
The cabbage rolls he’s cooking at Emmett have come a long way from that childhood memory in style
Filled with ground duck and foie gras and glazed with red cabbage juice
biting into the richness of one of these cigar-shaped “malfouf” bundles is like the bonus prize on a sharing platter of dry-aged duck that’s already a spectacle of delights
is served over a rich duck jus tanged with the fruity sweetness of roasted pear and topped with caramelized fennel bulbs
and silky golden scoops of saffron-fennel purée
“I have an affection for traditional things
but I’ve always liked to take them and flip them in nontraditional ways,” says Snyder
As one of the large-format dishes that anchor the menu at Emmett
it’s a highlight that exemplifies the kind of skill Snyder has for artfully layering multiple components into a dish that eats like a journey — one that may take sparks of inspiration from here or there
but ultimately follows the landscape of the chef’s own imagination
the cluster of Middle Eastern countries that stretch from the sea’s eastern edge into Eurasia
There is soft butter infused with the fragrant smoked cinnamon of a house ras el hanout to accompany warm madeleines encrusted with toasted sesame seeds and a rhubarb jam dip
The Yemenite spice blend of hawaij infuses a creamy sauce for cold-smoked cobia layered with surf clams beneath a cover of torn herbs
all over zesty muhammara made with puréed chiles
and roasted peanuts instead of the usual walnuts
Za’atar-dusted crackers topped with smoked Jonah crab salad are reminiscent of a smoked whitefish
among Snyder’s many references to his love for Jewish deli classics
Another example not to be missed are the crispy rye tartlets filled with American Wagyu tartare and smoked grain mustard dusted with a nose-tingling garnish of grated horseradish
or a satisfying first bite in the four-course tasting option for $105
were often overly ambitious for a Queen Village corner better suited to being a more accessible
which initially started elsewhere as a fried chicken restaurant
indeed began to lower prices before Snyder left in 2023
and has continued to evolve in that direction.)
and the two quickly bonded “theologically” over food and realized they wanted to collaborate
The reinstallation of a live-edged bar to this space — recreating Cadence’s chef counter
but this time with alcohol — could prove crucial to the financial sustainability of this project
(Although 16 more are expected outside in warm weather.)
There’s a smart drink program built exclusively around Pennsylvania products by bar manager Petra Manchina
who has deftly synced her cocktails to savory ingredients from the kitchen
from her take on a dirty martini made with feta brine-washed vodka and leek-infused vermouth to the smoke of clarified eggplant essence for a sparkling lime mocktail and the unusual Mary’s Lamb
which uses a lamb fat-washed rye with absinthe and nocino
(It’s a cocktail that’s so much better than it sounds — barnyard boozy in a good way.) The Mary’s Lamb is even better when you sip it before diving into the platter of meltingly tender lamb belly and smoked harissa loin over rice and lentil mujadara
Snyder is making the most of the great seasonal produce available to him
The earthy sweetness of salt-roasted badger flame beets sits between the aromatic crackle of a toasted pistachio dukkah spice and a tangy matbucha puree that’s flavored with coriander-scented tomatoes on the bottom of the plate
An appetizer of grilled halloumi cheese is contrasted by the bittersweet crunch of Castelfranco leaves dressed in a yogurt-based green goddess spiked with green chile heat
Turkey has been a point of departure for some of Snyder’s most compelling plates
such as the carrots cooked mangal-style directly over the coals glazed with vinegar-tanged carrot juice over burnt eggplant puree and harissa yogurt
I’m also obsessed with his cappelletti dumplings filled with sujuk sausage
a cuminy ground Wagyu beef filling whipped with tangy sumac and fermented ramp miso
then arrayed over a romesco sauce made with crushed red chiles and smoked walnuts — one of the most exciting pastas in the city this year
But I’d lean on the lighter side (Yes to Galen Glen’s grüner from the Lehigh Valley!) for some of the seafood dishes where Snyder shows his lighter touch
as with the buttermilk-dredged chicken-fried oysters with “ranch tzatziki” to start
or an arctic char entree with a ras el hanout broth that’s lightly creamed with coconut milk — an admittedly non-Mediterranean ingredient
but a versatile way to add nondairy richness
(That char has since been replaced by a halibut with harissa butter
yet another sign of this chef’s restless curiosity to keep evolving his dishes.)
One experiment I’m glad he’s already moved on from is the Wagyu strip loin
Although I hope he finds a way to repurpose the bonus prizes on that rambling sharing platter — a broccoli rabe chermoula tribute to South Philly and a wonderful terrine of smoked oxtail
and sweetbreads that could be a small plate on its own
it doesn’t have to be complicated to be memorable
Snyder’s all-time favorite dessert is a classic sticky toffee pudding
then drenches it in a wading pool of dark caramel buzzing with Turkish coffee
Topped with a fistful of crushed pistachios to finish
For this talented young chef bursting with ideas — admittedly sometimes still too many for a single dish — it’s a fortunate situation that he now has a place of his own to continue crystalizing his vision and that we all get to savor the results

The Writers Guild Of America has advised members not to work on an upcoming drama about a deadly 1982 California avalanche that Martin Scorsese will produce because of the involvement of fellow producer Randall Emmett
Emmet is the founder and managing member of Convergence Entertainment Group
which has been on the WGA Strike/Unfair List since 2020 and is not a signatory to the Guild’s collective bargaining agreement or MBA
As such the Guild has reminded members not to write on the feature
The project is based on the 2021 documentary Buried: The 1982 Alpine Meadows Avalanche that recounted thow seven out of eight people died when they were engulfed by an avalanche at the Lake Tahoe ski resort
“Emmett has a long history of refusing to honor obligations to writers and the Guild has filed numerous arbitration claims against companies owned by Emmett over the last decade.”
Emmett was put on the Guild’s Strike/Unfair List “because two companies that he founded and co-owned
failed to pay over $700,000 in compensation
pension & health contributions and interest due to four writers on the television series Pump pursuant to a court judgment”
The Guild added that Convergence guaranteed the MBA obligations of another company that is signatory to the 2023 MBA
it advised members that Fifty Feet was placed on the Strike/Unfair List for failing to post a surety bond under provisions of the MBA
“The Guild demanded a surety bond from Fifty Feet after determining that it was not financially responsible and was unlikely to meet its MBA obligations in connection with several theatrical motion picture projects
“Emmett produced all three pictures and directed Cash Out under the pseudonym “Ives”.”
Emmett was a producer on Scorsese’s 2016 Japan-set epic Silence and 2019 mob drama The Irishman
Screen has reached out to Emmett directly and had not heard back at time of writing

Josh Emmett’s power and the devastating impact of that power has more or less defined the 40-year-old’s mixed martial arts career
opponents and fans alike anticipate Emmett uncorking his wicked fast and powerful overhands and what landing one of them might do to his foe
Emmett needed less than two minutes to answer that question
delivering one of the most terrifying knockouts of the decade so far.
That finish not only halted his two-fight skid and earned him a performance bonus
but it solidified Emmett’s place on the precipice of the featherweight title picture
Instead of parlaying that result into another run toward a title shot
he elected to take some time off and heal his body
and he returns to action more than 15 months later against the unbeaten and surging Lerone Murphy on April 5.

Emmett said he believed he owed it to himself
his coaches and his family to be 100 percent
which he believes he is heading into his next headliner and a reflection of how much better he understands the importance of taking care of his body
it's like you would almost do too much,” Emmett told UFC.com
now I'm telling these younger fighters to relax
the longevity of my career has been due to recovery.”
Emmett’s former opponent Ilia Topuria knocked out Alexander Volkanovski to take the belt
knocked out Max Holloway to defend it and then decided to vacate the title.
FREE FIGHTS: Emmett vs Mitchell | Murphy vs Barboza
Volkanovski and Diego Lopes lock horns for the vacant belt at UFC 314 in Miami next week
which Emmett sees as decent enough timing for his own run toward gold.
who is unbeaten through eight trips to the Octagon and dispatched Edson Barboza and Dan Ige in 2024
The bout represents Murphy’s second five-round assignment
and an opportunity against a former title challenger is exactly the kind of fight he needs to push him into the elite conversation
Emmett is completely aware of the situation
and although there is less in the fight for him other than stacking a couple of wins together
he knows it’s his job to take the risk against the up-and-coming guy
‘Be careful what you ask for,’ and he's never fought anybody like me.
“He's going to be in for a rude awakening on Saturday night.”

the expectations for fireworks are immense
He has landed the most knockdowns in featherweight history (12)
and his 1.32 knockdowns per 15 minutes is tied for second all-time in the division.
Emmett harnesses it with patience and thoughtfulness
combined with his sturdy wrestling background
makes for an evergreen danger no matter his age
He feels like he has everything fine-tuned along with his coaches at Team Alpha Male
April 5 provides another window to display those improvements and talents
and the ultimate goal remains the same: UFC gold
“I've been doing everything to get back into title contention
and that the vacant featherweight title is next weekend
I just have to go out there and perform the way that I know I'm capable
and I'll be in the conversations and back in title contention.”

creativity isn’t just a passion – it’s a way of life
Jacob has found his calling in the hands-on world of design and craftsmanship
From his roots in Detroit to the fast-paced energy of New York City
Emmett’s journey is one of self-discovery and a deep love for the art of making
he shares the rewards of creating with his hands and gives us insight into his day-to-day in one of the fashion world’s most exciting spaces
“If you don’t like what you’re doing
I was always interested in doing something creative
Once I got into the Fashion Accessories Design program
I discovered I care more about making things
but if I wasn’t going to be hands-on for a job
When you’re working on something and then you see the final product all put together
Even if you’re making something for yourself
it’s just the most rewarding feeling
but the driving force that keeps me motivated is my surroundings
Whether it’s buildings or the attitude of the city I’m in
It’s very different moving here from Detroit
but I think that there’s a certain momentum with New York
It keeps you moving and keeps you wanting to do things
It can be a bit exhausting at the same time
a member of the design team will come down with some crazy idea and multiple design cards
and then we’ll start making a physical prototype so they can see the bag in front of them
and decide what they like and what they don’t like about it
That’s the beginning steps of what leads to a bag being produced
Just keep doing things that interest you and that you enjoy
and just try to stay authentic to yourself
When you start dabbling or messing around with stuff that you aren’t necessarily passionate about
That’s when I feel like people start to resent what they do
If you don’t like what you’re doing
It’s very rewarding to come in and spend time and learn from the people around me in the shop
from cutting up paper to making prototypes
Just being in the environment in general is what I love the most about it
I think CCS gave me the opportunity to kind of grow and expand myself as a creative
It definitely was like a big growth period for me and prepared me in that sense
they really help you kind of mold who you are as a designer

Everyone loves a good trip, a nice getaway, but there is also something comforting, satisfying about returning home to familiar surroundings and settling back in, which is precisely what the UFC does this weekend.
Following international adventures in London and Mexico City, the action inside the Octagon this weekend once again takes place at the UFC APEX, with a slate featuring a number of intriguing matchups and capped by a crucial featherweight main event between Josh Emmett and Lerone Murphy.
It’s a home cooking weekend, and here’s a look at what’s on the menu.

Top 10 featherweights look to make their case for a spot in the title conversation as Josh Emmett and Lerone Murphy face off in Saturday night’s main event
FREE FIGHTS: Emmett vs Mitchell | Murphy vs Barboza
A fixture in the rankings for the last several years
this marks Emmett’s first appearance since his thunderous knockout win over Bryce Mitchell at UFC 296 at the end of 2023
He opened that year challenging for the interim title and then pushing now former champ Ilia Topuria to the scorecards
and remains one of the most dangerous power hitters in the division
More than five years after making his first walk to the Octagon
Murphy makes the trek on Saturday still brandishing an unbeaten record
having gone 7-0-1 in his first eight UFC appearances to advance his record to 15-0-1
“The Miracle” posted back-to-back decision wins over Edson Barboza and Dan Ige
further establishing himself as an ascending name to watch in the 145-pound weight class
The landscape of the featherweight division is shifting
with a new champion set to be crowned next weekend
While the winner of this one may not move straight into a championship opportunity
a strong performance from either man should definitely put them in the conversation
and set up a key fight in the second half of the year
Featherweights occupy the co-main event slot this weekend
with Pat Sabatini taking on Joanderson Brito
After opening his UFC career with four straight wins
Sabatini has alternated results over his last four outings
entering Saturday’s contest off a first-round submission win over Jonathan Pearce last October
The Philadelphia native is a standout grappler and dogged wrestler
who will need to keep his chin tucked and his head down in order to collect a second consecutive victory
Brito lost his promotional debut before rattling off five straight finishes following his contract-winning effort on Season 5 of Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS)
the aggressive Brazilian landed on the wrong side of the scorecards in a competitive bout with France’s William Gomis
UFC MEXICO RECAP: Bonus Coverage | Results | Scorecards
Can Sabatini build off his dominant showing last time out or will Brito get things moving in the right direction again to begin his 2025 campaign
Action shifts to the bantamweight division in this one
as DWCS grad Cortavious Romious faces off with Road to UFC tournament winner ChangHo Lee
Fighting out of Pura Vida BJJ/MMA in Milwaukee
Romious competed on back-to-back seasons of the annual talent-search series
losing his first appearance to Ramon Taveras before out-hustling Canadian Michael Imperato last year to claim a contract
the 31-year-old dropped a unanimous decision to Gaston Bolanos
starting well before fading in the back half of the contest
Lee earned dominant stoppage wins over Rana Singh and Daermisi Zhawupasi to advance to the bantamweight tournament finals on the second season of Road to UFC
then had to wait 10 months before finally facing off with Xiao Long
The South Korean won the bout by unanimous decision
These are the type of early-career fights that are critical to determining whether an athlete is capable of maintaining a place on the UFC roster long term
While not a massive fight in terms of divisional significance
how it plays out will tell us a great deal about both Romious and Lee once the smoke clears
It’s a clash of Contender Series graduates in the heavyweight division here
as Season 2 alum Kennedy Nzechukwu makes his third start in the big boy ranks opposite Season 5 grad Martin Buday
READ: March's Monthly Report
Nzechukwu has been a fascinating addition to the heavyweight division through his first two appearances
having registered first-round stoppage wins over Chris Barnett and Lukasz Brzeski
The towering Nigerian always flashed upside during his light heavyweight days
and seems to have finally found how to make his considerable weapons work best for him consistently inside the Octagon
Buday also started his UFC heavyweight tenure with wins over Barnett and Brzeski
adding victories over Jake Collier and Josh Parisian before being handed his first loss by Shamil Gaziev at the end of 2023
He rebounded last year with a split decision win over Andrei Arlovski and will now look to stem the advances of his fellow DWCS alum this weekend
Heavyweight is one of those weight classes where three or four wins can put you in the thick of the chase
so this main card clash carries plenty of significance
Middleweights with a combined 85 professional bouts under their belts share the Octagon here
as Brad Tavares faces off with Gerald Meerschaert
UFC 314 SIT-DOWN INTERVIEWS: Volkanovski | Lopes | Rodriguez | Pimblett
The longest tenured fighter in the division
Tavares begins his 16th year on the UFC roster looking to snap a two-fight skid
the longtime litmus test in the 185-pound ranks is just 3-6 over his last nine fights
and has gone just 1-4 since registering consecutive wins over Antonio Carlos Junior and Omari Akhmedov in 2021
Meerschaert is an action-oriented fighter that uses durability
and a great submission game to serve as a tricky assignment for everyone he’s matched up against
despite being 55 fights deep into his career
He had a two-fight winning streak snapped by Reinier de Ridder last time out
and will surely be looking to add to his record for the most finishes in middleweight division history this weekend
The main card opener also comes in the middleweight division
as three-time DWCS competitor Torrez Finney makes his promotional debut opposite recent TUF finalist Robert Valentin
but no contract in Season 7 before registering a unanimous decision victory over Cam Rowston in his first appearance of Season 8
and finally secured his spot on the UFC roster
advancing his record to 10-0 in the process
Valentin was the breakout performer on Season 32 of The Ultimate Fighter
advancing to the finals on the strength of stoppage wins over Giannis Bachar and Paddy McCorry while also taking on a coaching role with Team Grasso
He was submitted by Ryan Loder in the finals last August
and looks to rebound and collect his first UFC victory here
Order UFC 314: Volkanovski vs Lopes
This is an excellent initial matchup for Finney
who is undersized for the division at five-foot-eight
but has yet to encounter any real roadblocks to success in the 185-pound ranks
Valentin is a dangerous live wire with a considerable size advantage
so it’s going to be interesting to see how this one plays out
Saturday’s prelims close in the flyweight division
as DWCS Season 3 graduate Ode’ Osbourne welcomes Class of ’24 alum Luis Gurule to the Octagon for the first time
Osbourne enters on a three-fight losing streak
having most recently lost to Ronaldo Rodríguez at UFC 306 last September
which dropped him to 4-6 overall under the UFC banner

Santos has collected back-to-back victories but competes here for the first time since June 2023
Flyweights Diana Belbita and Dione Barbosa clash here in a matchup where each looks to kick off their 2025 schedules by getting back into the win column
having suffered consecutive losses to Karolina Kowalkiewicz and Molly McCann
and posting a 2-5 record through her first seven UFC appearances
Barbosa won her promotional debut last May
but came out on the wrong side of the results in a short-notice pairing with Miranda Maverick back in July
It’s an all-European battle in the welterweight division in this one as Rhys McKee faces off with promotional newcomer Daniel Frunza of Romania on Saturday’s prelims
UPCOMING EVENTS: Purchase Tickets For UFC 315 In Montreal
McKee hasn’t been able to translate that success to the highest level as of yet
entering this weekend’s contest having gone 0-4 over two stints in the UFC
Romania’s Frunza claimed his place on the roster with a second-round stoppage win last season on Dana White’s Contender Series
pushing his winning streak to five and his record to 9-2 with the victory
Loma Lookboonmee looks to continue her winning ways as she returns to action opposite Brazilian Istela Nunes this weekend
The first Thai fighter to compete in the UFC
Lookboonmee enters having won three straight and five of her last six
establishing herself as an ascending name to track in the 115-pound weight class
Nunes has dropped each of her first three UFC assignments
and competes here for the first time since suffering a gruesome elbow injury against Viktoriia Dudakova in July 2023
Experienced bantamweights Victor Henry and Pedro Falcao lock horns early on Saturday’s fight card at the UFC APEX
Register Your Interest For UFC 320 Noche UFC
The 37-year-old Henry is 3-2 with one no contest through his first six appearances inside the Octagon
having most recently been submitted by Charles Jourdain in Edmonton last November
Falcao was called into action on short notice last April
landing on the wrong side of the scorecards in a bout with Victor Hugo
which snapped his five-fight winning streak
Talented grapplers Vanessa Demopoulos and Talita Alencar open this weekend’s fight card in what should be a competitive and spirited battle in the 115-pound weight class
Demopoulos looks to get things moving in a positive direction again after having her two-fight winning streak halted by Jaqueline Amorim last time out
Alencar has split her first two appearances inside the Octagon since graduating from Season 7 of Dana White’s Contender Series
edging out Rayanne Dos Santos by split decision before dropping her rematch with Stephanie Luciano last August
