Enchanted Hills neighborhood in northwest El Paso is experiencing traffic congestion and safety road concerns That's what's driving one viewer crazy this week Christian Lopez sent an email to KFOX14 about the area undergoing significant growth and construction president of the Enchanted Hills Neighborhood Association citing the neighborhood's single exit and the ongoing Texas Department of Transportation I-10 Widening West Project which stretches from Mesa Street on Interstate 10 to New Mexico aims to expand the highway from four to six lanes Lopez said the project's signage is confusing "Many folks are driving well over 35 to 40 miles an hour on these roads that so many families access and that walkability is pretty much taken away with the growing development," said Lopez Lopez also expressed concern about emergency access noting it can take 20 to 30 minutes to leave the neighborhood "We have a hospital right across the road from 375 but if an emergency happens during one of these bottlenecks that happens six out of the seven days a week you will not be able to access that neighborhood," The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) acknowledged the area's growth Almost nobody does it with the exception of those franchise we’re the only one that full-time does Detroit-style pizza at least in this part of the state,” he said rectangular pan pizza rather than the usual round pie It also has a crispy crust that is partly made by the overflow of cheese burning on the sides of the pan “Other thing that I think comes into play is it’s harder than other pizza You don’t just toss it and sauce it and cook it I think here we have a hundred blue steel pans and we need that to get through a busy night It takes a lot more than just making a pizza and throwing it in the oven,” Beckley explains Beckley explained they took a page from the original Detroit-style pizza The blue pans and the length of time it takes are part of the experience for Beckley The quality of the ingredients used is another reason Beckley gives for people to wait for a good pizza We’re higher end in our ingredients and it takes a lot of work to track down stuff that fits our requirements,” he says “Felicia does a ton of research finding the right products We’ve brought products into New Mexico that were previously unavailable Bianco Di Napoli Tomatoes are a fantastic offering ...and they were unavailable previously from any food distributor.” Making a Detroit style pizza at Thicc Pizza Co Or if you’re coming to The Block and you have other things that you want to see then go out and see what’s going on,” Beckley suggests Rio Rancho was the optimum location for Beckley and Meyer for that reason and a few others There’s a lot of challenges to doing business in downtown Albuquerque aside for the space being so small you have to worry about a plethora of things that we don’t have to worry about here Beckley adds that a major attraction was the unique concept and opportunities offered at The Block “We were here early enough that we got to pick our container We could have been in in the food hall area but we wanted a little bit more space We wanted to be able to sell our own beer and wine that is different from what they’re serving anyplace else here at The Block,” he says Beckley says he is content with opening slow “There was a lot of anticipation where we were trying to get things ready and we did not open officially when The Block opened up We’re training and getting our finishing touches.. but one question that Beckley gets is if people can get Thicc Pizza delivered if people go through third party delivery vendors (like DoorDash They are also working on the New-York-style side of the menu and gluten-free options For more information visit thiccpizzaco.com anticipation and headaches caused by construction delays THE BLOCK is finally set to open in September will hold its grand opening for the public on Sept 13 with a VIP soft opening celebration set for Sept The open-air shipping container complex which features a high-end bar a private event hosted by Albuquerque Business First acting chief operations officer for THE BLOCK welcomed a large crowd to the event and boasted about the new venue which includes 35,000 square feet of new business space and 22 tenants creating jobs and economic development in Rio Rancho THE BLOCK will feature 14 food and retail locations rotating food trucks and a signature bar called “The Top of THE BLOCK.” THE BLOCK will host a variety of events daily aiming to create a family-friendly space for community engagement beyond just eating and shopping “We really want this to be a community hub and a family-friendly space that you come to spend time in and not just eat and shop,” Gravelle said Despite encountering numerous setbacks such as construction delays material shortages and tenant relocation issues Gravelle is grateful for the support from the city of Rio Rancho and Mayor Gregg Hull for helping  the venue overcome the challenges and stay on track for the new opening date “We were really lucky that through those challenging times the vision was shared by Mayor Gregg Hull and the city of Rio Rancho,” Gravelle said “They quickly got behind us and lent us their unwavering support and resources to bring THE BLOCK to reality.” THE BLOCK is located on 1.3 acres of vacant land at the northwest corner of the Plaza at Enchanted Hills shopping center in Rio Rancho After breaking ground on the complex in November 2022 the plan was for THE BLOCK to open in fall 2023 THE BLOCK is finally scheduled to open in Enchanted Hills after months of delays THE BLOCK will feature indoor and outdoor spaces for food vendors a bar overlooking the Sandia Mountains and an outdoor stage that sits on a turf and concrete courtyard visitors can expect to see the following food and drink options when THE BLOCK opens: Stackers Recently added tenants include local sweet shop Suga Suga; We couldn't figure it out whether we wanted to open up a restaurant Whether we wanted to open up a gym or whatever and we couldn't really figure out what we wanted," he explained The duo would meet to brainstorm ideas at a boba shop every day Not that that really matters but she does love boba And one day we were sitting there and I just had an epiphany and was like 'Why don't we open up boba shop?' And she's like I mean we spend enough money here anyways; we might as well stop going broke doing this," he added One of the notable aspects about how the shop is decorated is the numerous Asian wanted to have something to live for her for the remainder of eternity so it is nice that she knew that we opened this for her and that her legacy generosity and friendliness are going to live on," community was rich and successful and positive A lot of people had built up a lot of cool cars during the pandemic and now they had nowhere safe to show them off," he added While there is a rich car community in central New Mexico Trujillo says many of the so called "takeovers" involve illegal activity and give true car enthusiasts a bad name His "Cars and Boba" car meet has become popular at his Albuquerque location and he intends to bring something similar to the new location "I tie into putting on car shows for the community and the majority of them have been free and we have done raffles to raise money for events such as Make-A-Wish Foundation or the Leukemia Lymphomas Society Trujillo is also always sure to invite law enforcement to the car meets to not only keep the peace but show the community that law enforcement isn't all bad either and that way the people and the enthusiasts feel safe because nothing's going to happen But they also realize that police officers are just normal people like us They're just in a uniform to protect us," he added At times the officers at the car meets become part of it Trujillo says they always add them to their social media posts The hope for Trujillo is that the Rio Rancho shop be exactly like the Albuquerque location in the aspect of customers returning and becoming part of the boba family that is Ma's Tea House and that's the transparency that we want that we're not here just to make a quick buck but here to impact the community He also wants people to let them know how they like things and if they are needed for any community events he asks people bring their pets in with them instead of leaving them in the hot car outside A grand opening for the tea shop will be held Saturday For information about Ma's, visit marker Enchanted Hills subdivision in North Nashville has enough history to surprise those who call the neighborhood home and I would think it was like '89 and we moved in here in November of '91," said resident Bernice Campbell Campbell said there were many reasons why she and her husband chose the Enchanted Hills subdivision and everybody's so nice in the neighborhood and we've not really had any problems or any conflict here And I just really love it here because I like the peace and quiet," said Campbell Campbell said that even when she and her husband moved in it was still a Black and she remembers when neighbors fought to keep the subdivision from developers and the land between these houses was like a strip and then they wanted to probably put some property — bits of townhouses or some — between so everybody got together in a neighborhood and purchased a strip of land between our houses," Campbell said then we would have to give them a right of way on our property to get to this land." The Metro Nashville Historical Commission Facebook postfrom 2021 got the attention of residents like Ashley Woodland "I grew up here my whole life; I didn't know about the history at all of Woodland said she's raising money through a GoFundMe page to get a historical marker placed in Enchanted Hills — the place once deemed the "Belle Meade of North Nashville" in a 1988 real estate advertisement "The city of Nashville has been growing and it's been changing and I thought that it was important to commemorate the history of this neighborhood," Woodland said from the mid-century modern and contemporary architecture of the homes to neighbors protesting more than 40 years ago against environmental injustices threatening their health and property values make this subdivision also eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places "We’re happy to have these homes that are kind of on land We understand that the city is growing and it's changing we can have these homes stay here as long as possible," Woodland said A new subdivision is being constructed not too far from Enchanted Hills and close to where Woodland would love to see a historic marker Woodland said the cost for this marker is $2,754 and will go towards the funding needed for the Metro Historical Commission THE BLOCK will be the newest addition to the The Plaza @ Enchanted Hills THE BLOCK is a new retail and food/beverage development on 1.3 acres of vacant land at the NW corner of the Plaza @ Enchanted Hills shopping center The inspiration behind THE BLOCK is to provide a space for the local community to shop “With retail and food vendors surrounding a central courtyard area; spots for three local food trucks; a center stage for community performances and outdoor movies; and an upper level with prime views THE BLOCK offers something for everyone,” according to the announcement of a ground-breaking ceremony  The project will be comprised of a combination of re-purposed shipping containers and newly constructed buildings With over 14,000 square feet of leasable area in increments as small as 200 square feet THE BLOCK offers a low-risk opportunity for local food and retail businesses THE BLOCK is scheduled to open in late 2023 is operating the construction and leasing inquiries may be made to the Pegasus Group  THE BLOCK container park will break ground for construction on Tuesday Here is a link for more information: Click here The Block is almost ready to open in Rio Rancho’s Enchanted Hills The shipping container complex will feature a high-end bar “This has been kind of the most beautiful hybrid we could come up with we took so many popular things and favorite things post-COVID that allow people to be outside and enjoy,” said Tiffany Gravelle good things come to those who wait and we’re really excited to roll it out in its final version,” Gravelle said The Block is now accepting RFPs for food trucks, mural artists, and performers. female architect and deep-pocketed media mogul turned a dream into reality invitations to Hearst Castle were coveted treats Hollywood’s elite — a mainstay at newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst’s estate — took a train from Los Angeles at 6:30 p.m on Friday and arrived at San Luis Obispo around midnight limousines arrived to shuttle them 45 miles northwest to San Simeon a small town along California’s Central Coast the journey continued on a dirt road that climbed through the foothills near the Santa Lucia Mountains guests might glimpse the “castle” on a hill overlooking San Simeon Bay but they were just as likely to see American bison appeared in a roadside zoo as the drive continued classical art greeted visitors at every turn — and still does today — displayed at the two swimming pools Hearst Castle also had a library filled with more than 5,000 books the visitors log at Hearst Castle wasn’t just a who’s who of Hollywood Winston Churchill accepted Hearst’s invitation museum director at Hearst San Simeon Historical Monument says Hearst built his estate so he could entertain alongside his mistress but he also saw it as an opportunity to educate his guests about the buildings’ architecture on the most exquisite part of the California Coast,” O’Brien explains “It has such a great story and so much history and artwork.” The story of Hearst Castle begins with Hearst’s father A miner who made a fortune in metals from three of the nation’s largest strikes as well as a businessman and George purchased 40,000 acres of ranchland near San Simeon in 1865 when his only child was still a toddler and the two of them often camped where “W.R.” would eventually build “I love this ranch,” Hearst wrote as an adult to his mother I love the sea and I love the mountains and the hollows in the hills and the shady places in the creeks and the fine old oaks and even the hot brush hillsides — full of quail — and the canyons — full of deer I would rather spend a month at the ranch than any place in the world.” Although George hoped his son would join him in the mining business Hearst begged his father to give him control of a newspaper the elder Hearst had won gambling It was the start of the younger Hearst’s own empire Soon after taking control of the San Francisco Examiner Hearst accumulated more than two dozen newspapers including Cosmopolitan and Good Housekeeping He added radio stations to his media portfolio and started a movie studio as well as a book publishing division William Randolph Hearst inspired Orson Welles’s 1941 classic Citizen Kane He didn’t understand the concept of a budget and borrowed money to pay off or refinance his debt he couldn’t afford to build a massive estate on his own a former historian at Hearst Castle and author of Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect says Phoebe unknowingly played a role in the construction of Hearst Castle by paving the way for him to meet Julia Morgan the woman who became the architect behind Hearst Castle In a presentation to the Hearst Castle Preservation Foundation Kastner shared how Phoebe funded the first international architecture competition in history in 1896 The prize was a commission to design several buildings on the University of California’s Berkeley campus who had studied civil engineering at Berkeley before becoming the first woman to graduate from the architecture school of the acclaimed École des Beaux-Arts in Paris declined to be appointed the supervising architect so John Galen Howard (who had originally placed fourth) was awarded the position and he appointed Morgan the construction superintendent of the Greek theater That role could have put her in contact with not only Phoebe but William Randolph Hearst himself since he donated money for the theater and attended its grand opening Morgan became the “architect royal of the Hearst family” after starting her own firm in 1904 One of her first residential commissions was to complete Hacienda del Pozo de Verona after the architect of record died a project that in some ways foreshadowed Hearst Castle Hearst had asked his mother if he could build a house on another family ranch in Pleasanton cautioned him to keep the project under control By the time Phoebe visited Hacienda del Pozo de Verona Hearst continued to turn his attention elsewhere He had continued to camp out at the San Simeon ranch bringing his five sons to the same place he had stayed with his father but Hearst wanted more permanent accommodations at “Camp Hill.” After what had happened with Hacienda del Pozo de Verona Phoebe understandably opposed this project we are tired of camping out in the open at the ranch in San Simeon and I would like to build a little something.” a draftsman in Morgan’s office when she met with Hearst to discuss his hilltop estate revealed in later interviews that the media mogul initially asked for a simple three-bedroom Drawing inspiration from the European tour he had taken with Phoebe as a ten-year-old Hearst asked Morgan to design a Spanish Renaissance village overlooking the ranch which by then had expanded to 250,000 acres a main house that looked like the cathedrals he had seen in Spain through elaborate Italian and Spanish gardens and to the three surrounding cottages he had plans to showcase his fine art collection Hearst broke ground on what he called La Cuesta Encantada — The Enchanted Hill — in the fall of 1919 says Morgan immediately put her civil engineering degree to use followed by a hydroelectric plant to get water to the site she designed not only the buildings but also the project’s gardens and interiors “Julia was involved in absolutely every aspect adding that they were constantly discussing the estate Steilberg recalled that when the two of them bent over a drawing board everyone else could have been a hundred miles away and he swore he could see creative sparks fly from one forehead to the other On weekends when Morgan stayed at the estate Hearst always had her sit next to him at dinner so they could continue their conversation Their like-mindedness didn’t mean Morgan always agreed with Hearst but she talked him out of things,” Brynildson explains During the 28 years they worked together on Hearst Castle the two had plenty of opportunities to argue Hearst owned only 5 percent of the current art collection before 1919 and he was constantly buying pieces he wanted to display at the estate and they have to be incorporated into the structure,” Kastner says the ceiling in the refectory arrived as a row of 16th-century Italian wall panels that had to be assembled into a rectangular shape and then extended with additional pieces to fit the 72-foot ceiling The choir stalls along the refectory walls had to be similarly extended and the fireplace in the room was originally only 11 feet tall Morgan used concrete to give it more height Hearst suffered from what Morgan wrote was a “severe case of changeableness of mind.” He had the outdoor Neptune Pool redesigned twice after it was initially installed and he ordered the roof of Casa Grande raised twice Walkways were widened; gardens were redesigned one of Hearst’s sons claimed that if Hearst had lived twice as long his estate would have been twice as large and still unfinished Hearst’s poor money management skills caught up with him He was forced to relinquish control over his Hearst Corporation stocks and sell personal assets including his castle in Wales and a portion of his art collection He also had to suspend work at Hearst Castle when the 84-year-old left to be closer to the medical care he needed Recognizing La Cuesta Encantada’s architectural Hearst offered the estate to the University of California but the university felt it couldn’t afford to maintain the property California agreed to manage La Cuesta Encantada as a state park and granted a land easement to protect the 82,000 acres that remain of the original range The newly renamed Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument began offering public tours four years later visitors can see the highlights on the Grand Rooms Tour go behind the scenes on the Cottages and Kitchen Tour California’s first female licensed architect O’Brien recommends taking the Upstairs Suites Tour to see the Gothic Suite her favorite room because it’s where Hearst wrote his daily column under an ornate ceiling Morgan designed just for him we’re seeing his whole life story,” O’Brien says his appreciation for the architecture and art he saw when he went to Europe with his mom Teresa Bitler is an award-winning travel writer whose work has appeared in National Geographic Traveler Not long after the State of California opened Hearst Castle to the general public the Post gave readers an inside look into the life and obsession of an American millionaire For more than three decades a hallucination pestered motorists driving California’s U.S which clings to cliffs and skirts the sea from Monterey south to San Luis Obispo Looking up at the Santa Lucia Range from the vicinity of the tiny port of San Simeon many a sober and otherwise sound traveler has sworn that his eyes saw an alabaster castle gleaming in the sky These sightseers can now put their apprehensions to rest the only genuine castle in the United States But what they saw as in a mirage was nothing compared to the castle they can now inspect firsthand the incredible abode that the late William Randolph Hearst built for himself Not since the days of absolute potentates has any man combined the wealth and the urge to build as did William Randolph Hearst Probably never again will a man be able to repeat the feat Hearst never referred to his grandiose shelter as a castle It was “the ranch house,” on which he spent in the 28 years from 1919 to 1947 approximately $30,000,000 he gathered the editors and executives of his publishing empire to make major policy decisions he gathered the young of Hollywood about him It was a rare weekend when he entertained fewer than 40 guests At times there were up to 100 in the great dining hall San Simeon’s parties were anything but the wild affairs that outsiders used to suspect and getting caught nipping in a bedroom could mean “down The Hill,” with no more invitations to San Simeon The lavish but regimented hospitality of the remote fairy-tale castle lured visitors from many walks of life — by invitation Guests included politicians and business tycoons one president — Calvin Coolidge and his wife — and George Bernard Shaw who delightedly departed bearing an autographed photograph of the chatelaine of the castle The frequent round-ups of Hollywood personalities were talent shows as well as clambakes; they were Miss Davies’ helping a camp for the blind heal from the Nuns Fire These AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps team members are becoming disaster recovery pros They previously spent time stripping flood-drenched homes in Texas down to the studs in the wake of Hurricane Harvey Now they’re washing and painting smoke-damaged buildings and constructing a small barn at Enchanted Hills Camp in the mountains northwest of the city of Napa The goal is to have a section of the 311-acre property ready for campers this summer The young men and women come from different states and different life situations They joined a federal community service program with about 80,000 participants annually the team members at Enchanted Hills want to help “Our hearts are in the same place,” she said The Nuns fire charged down Mount Veeder on Oct 10 through parts of the Enchanted Hills property Part of the lower camp still has a smoky smell Camp buildings there are heaps of wreckage near blackened trees AmeriCorps participants do little fire recovery work in the lower camp Experienced contractors overseen by the U.S Army Corps of Engineers will haul away the burned-out structures The fire wreaked far less havoc in the upper camp That’s where the AmeriCorps group is hard at work team members began putting up the framing for a two-donkey barn Wood for the barn comes from fire-damaged redwoods A local resident has a portable mill and turned the wood into lumber The barn’s tin siding will come from a building destroyed in the fire All of this makes the barn a kind of Nuns fire the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point to do something positive and productive before I decide what to do after college,” she said Both Goldensoph and Miller remember seeing news reports last October about the Napa fires The team was assigned to the Hurricane Harvey recovery in Texas but Goldensoph said members had a hunch they could be headed to California next Enchanted Hills Camp has hosted AmeriCorps teams during the winter for several years The teams usually concentrate on making camp improvements such as finishing deck railings and working on horse trail fencing AmeriCorps wasn’t going to come to Enchanted Hills this year The need was too great in Florida and Texas in the wake of hurricanes “Once the Northern California fires took place all of a sudden we became an emergency area,” said Anthony Fletcher “So they were able to send a team to help with our cleanup project That relationship built in past years with AmeriCorps paid off Fletcher said AmeriCorps contacted Enchanted Hills Camp to see if help was needed AmeriCorps participants receive something in return for their 10 months of service Miller said they earn a $6,000 education award “It’s really nice to be doing something important every day with your two hands,” Miller said Enchanted Hills Camp is run by LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired A history provided by the group says Enchanted Hills was founded in 1950 as the first camp for the blind west of the Mississippi River It offers such confidence-building opportunities as exploring trails and creating team skits Enchanted Hills could be back in action on a limited basis within a few months Fletcher said the first session could be a summer camp for blind babies and their families starting June 15 the AmeriCorps team left the Enchanted Hills property and hiked to the top of nearby Mount Veeder where the fire was at its destructive worst Miller said the landscape looked like a black-and-white movie Enchanted Hills Camp still has areas of green grass and trees mixed amid the black The AmeriCorps volunteers living in the fire zone are not faced with unrelenting bleakness “This part of the camp is pretty intact,” Miller said as she stood near the donkey barn site And it will look even better when the AmeriCorps team finishes its work on April 6 and heads off to another work site wherever in the United States that might be Mount Veeder is a forested area a few miles west of the city of Napa turned partly into a charred landscape by the Nuns Fire A shopper enters the Kirkland's home-goods store at the Plaza More private villas, hotels and glamping sites. “In considering rebranding, we had played around with the idea of sustainable development and finding an architect who could realize that vision,” Lally said. “Alex was the perfect choice for this project considering his passion for sustainable architecture.” I recently sat down with Nerovnya to discuss the Enchanted Hill concept, the current state of sustainable building and other emerging trends in the architecture space. NL: Tell us about your compound concept for Angelo Park at the Enchanted Hill. The sustainable compound concept for Angelo Place at the Enchanted Hill was designed to organically ... More interact with both the landscape and the buildings along the road. NL: What was your approach to the concept for Angelo Park at the Enchanted Hill, which is essentially a mountaintop? NL: Angelo Park at the Enchanted Hill is a rare trophy for its size and scale. What are some of the challenges that come with designing a home for such a large property? NL: Does the design’s shape have any special meaning? AN: We love using architecture to interact with the natural environment. By utilizing glass walls, we are able to visually erase the separation between the indoors and the outdoors. One of the beautiful effects of this approach is that throughout the day, the mood and feeling of the interior change drastically due to a massive role of natural light, penetrating through the glass. NL: This project and many of your past works display a strong connection to nature. What is your approach when it comes to designing a home to its surroundings? Because of the amount of "green space" surrounding the property More compound as a series of hilltops within the Enchanted Hill property NL: Sustainability is a big topic right now How is a focus on sustainability changing how we design homes AN: When you go through the necessary steps of conceptual design it is important to take into account the factors of the area where the building will be located the location of the house relative to east and west The main factor that affects the energy efficiency of a building is the usage of electricity (light we pay a lot of attention to the research of new building materials and technologies which allow us to maximize the usage of natural light manage the energy expenditures of central heating and air conditioning by implementing hi-tech insulation solutions rather than hiking the system’s power output NL: What trends do you see emerging this year in the architecture/design space AN: We love to see the attention of the architectural and interior design community to start paying more attention to sustainability issues to ways to reduce the energy expenditure and the carbon footprint of a particular dwelling or public area we expect to see a great number of iconic architectural projects promoting green where the emphasis is given not only to the functional side of the structure but also to its eco-neutrality and the well-being of its inhabitants and users Hilton & Hyland is an exclusive member of Forbes Global Properties, a consumer marketplace and membership network of elite brokerages selling the world’s most luxurious homes. blind or have low vision you can have big fun,” says Bryan Bashin, CEO of LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired the San Francisco nonprofit that runs Enchanted Hills Camp (EHC) Summer offerings run the gamut from chemistry camp to a music academy which provides blind musicians and composers with the tools and training to take their practices to the next — possibly professional — level participants in this year’s music academy performed in the camp’s Redwood Grove a natural amphitheater surrounded by stately trees and intricately hand-carved benches The Steinway Company paid to have a full grand piano brought all the way up winding Mt But then the Nuns and Partrick fires converged on EHC’s 311-acre property ripping through the lower camp as Cal Fire crews fought to contain the blaze site manager Donny Lay stands next to the pile of white ash that was once the amphitheater’s wooden stage “There’s my rake,” he says “I’m still looking for my leaf blower.” the camp was the first of its kind on the West Coast providing blind children (and now teens and adults) with opportunities to explore a natural environment meet friends and have quintessential camp experiences hike miles of trails and play on a sensory jungle gym Resnick herself was a professional piano virtuoso — she raised the money to buy the property by teaching piano to the daughters and sons of San Francisco’s elite with Rose playing the piano,” Bashin says “It really was very musically oriented.” in the music academy and with woodworking and art classes taught by master woodworker and camp construction manager George Wurtzel the camp hosted a tactile arts symposium organized by the National Federation of the Blind curators and EHC neighbors abandoned standard protocol to run their hands over sculpture and installation work by Wurtzel “It’s drilled into people from childhood,” says Georgina Kleege a lecturer in English at UC Berkeley who writes on visual art and blindness and attended the symposium But touch sensation is very complex and multidimensional Just as looking at a painting isn’t about saying what it depicts touching art is not just about figuring out what the object is.” It was the type of gathering that happens regularly at EHC where blind and visually impaired people with common skills and interests convene to challenge societal conceptions of what they can and can’t do Cal Fire crews managed to save a number of the camp’s structures — the director’s residence the Tactile Art Gallery inside the art barn Also spared: the home of site managers Donny and Janet Lay When I visit EHC nearly a month after the fires first broke out during a community gathering organized by Napa County Supervisors Ryan Gregory and Diane Dillon Donny drives me down to what remains of Redwood Grove: the stately trees (Upon the staff’s return to camp after the fire they found a post-it note attached to the slightly singed sign: “LAFD Engine 98 The day before the camp’s residents evacuated Lay cleaned up the redwood needles around the amphitheater and a gathering space called the “Half Moon Circle.” He attributes the survival of those areas to his unknowingly prescient fire abatement EHC has been diligent over the years about clearing brush and reducing the site’s susceptibility to fire Their spacious and still-standing dining hall where members of the community (many covered in ash after days of sifting through their ruined homes) gathered on Nov was recently re-roofed with Class A fire retardant shingles capable of housing 120 kids — some returning year after year — are completely gone the porcelain toilets exploded from the heat The six double bunk beds in each cabin are now twisted piles of metal and springs Outside one demolished cabin in the “Girls Town,” a fire extinguisher once affixed to the building’s exterior partially drained by fire crews who exhausted the camp’s water tanks in their efforts to douse the flames a shade structure and a bathhouse are all destroyed Lay was particularly proud of the work he’d done around the pool saying it was in the best shape it had been in years Neighbors at the community meeting all had memories of or ties to EHC One couple apologized to Wurtzel that a piece of wood they’d been saving for him was gone A son’s boy scout troop did years of service projects at the camp though much of the evidence of that work was lost to the flames one man had his wedding reception in the camp’s dining hall “It is a well-loved space,” Bashin says “I can’t go to a gathering and not find somebody whose kid went to camp or whose friend did work at the camp.” all of which helped fund the summer programming While they mourn the loss of nearly half the camp’s buildings including a cabin that housed five staff members EHC and LightHouse staff approach their next steps optimistically “The most encouraging thing is that we get to reimagine what will be a wonderful space,” Bashin says “We can take advantage of 70 years of learning about blind people and how we like to be in nature.” Rebuilding will give EHC a chance to incorporate greater accessibility into the camp so those with multiple disabilities can have more freedom on-site Bashin envisions using natural materials to line trails; a cane can detect boundaries that might look ordinary to a seeing person Fresh off the three-year process of acquiring designing and building LightHouse’s new headquarters on Market Street Bashin welcomes these less right-angled design challenges “How can we design a space where people can dare to walk in the woods in a place they don’t know — and survive?” he says But Bashin is undaunted — the legacy of Enchanted Hills only makes its speedy recovery that much more important “I’ve seen the miracles that happen when kids who think they’re the only blind kid on the earth or parents who think they’re the only parents with a blind kid come together,” Bashin says I ask Lay if he will miss the campers as they rebuild “We’ll get this place ready as fast as we can.” For more information about LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired and their Enchanted Hills Camp, click here An El
