Endwell residents soon will be able to enjoy some of the food that's received rave reviews at a Binghamton barbecue joint
The owner of Big Zues Barbecue on the city's North Side has announced plans to launch a second restaurant in Endwell
Jesus Clarke has operated Big Zues at Chenango and Eldredge streets for the past three years
Clarke told WNBF News he is preparing to launch a new eatery with "the same vibe" on Watson Boulevard in Endwell
The second Big Zues location will be at 3017 Watson Boulevard
That restaurant previously operated as Kasey's Barbecue
The owner dropped the barbecue concept in October citing the "outta control" cost of brisket
Clarke said "months of hard work" have gone into the planning for the Endwell location
The menu at the Watson Boulevard site is expected to be the same as that offered at the original Big Zues restaurant in Binghamton
The small building in Endwell will have room for some tables but Clarke isn't sure what the dine-in capacity will be at the new place
Clarke is aiming to open the second restaurant in mid-March but he indicated it may take a bit longer to get things ready at that site

Few high school programs repeat success the way Maine-Endwell's football team does
Saturday's 50-30 win over Buffalo Health Sciences Charter in a New York State Public High School Athletic Association semifinal at Vestal's Dick Hoover Stadium was a prime example
M-E's first two touchdowns came on the same play call
The Spartans' first offensive play of the second half was a touchdown on an option pitch, exact same scenario as the previous week's state quarterfinal victory over Indian River
the unbeaten Spartans are headed to the NYSPHSAA Class B championship game for the fourth year in a row and ninth time overall
who caught two touchdown passes and ran for one
"It’s always a privilege to be able to get back there
Definitely want to get it done this year."
Total offense for Maine-Endwell was 529 yards despite pulling the starters after three quarters with the lead at 42-14
A 25-yard TD run from Zachary Battaglini helped boost the edge to 50-14 less than two minutes into the fourth quarter
"It was a team effort," veteran M-E head coach Matt Gallagher said
Special teams we had to make some changes there
Landon Rollo created that turnover with a third-quarter interception that led to a Spartans touchdown during a 28-point third quarter
What It MeansMaine-Endwell (13-0) is one win from the program's eighth state championship and seventh since 2011
The Spartans' most recent titles came back-to-back in 2021 and 2022
That setback is the lone loss for the Spartans in their last 48 games
M-E will take on Section 9 champion Port Jervis (11-1) in the title contest at 3 p.m
Port Jervis topped previously unbeaten Glens Falls
More: A closer look at Maine-Endwell's success over the years
Dominant line play and a plethora of skill players who can cause damage contribute to Maine-Endwell's explosive offense
which has put up 40 points or more in 11 of 13 games
highlighted by a 59-yard run on an option pitch to open the second half after he went 50 yards for a TD last week on the same play
scoring from 58 and 34 yards on seam patterns down the center of the field to account for both M-E first-half touchdowns as the Spartans led 14-6 at the break.Preston Ocker completed 6 of 7 passes for 142 yards and four touchdowns
he connected with Jaden Branch for an 8-yard touchdown following Rollo's interception and Tyler Mathews for a 10-yard score.Branch carried 13 times for 149 yards
including a 76-yard touchdown that put M-E up 28-6 less than five minutes into the second half."He's pretty good
but he would never say anything other than the fact he's good because the guys around him are," Gallagher said of Mancini
"Any given day it can be any of the four guys in the backfield
and even some of our split ends on certain occasions
Mancini credited "a great triple threat in the backfield" consisting of Branch
Mathews and Rollo in helping to open up M-E's passing game
"We have a great running back in Jaden Branch
He's able to bring the defense up," Mancini said
we were able to get it behind him with the option pass."
Mancini added M-E has shown it is a second-half team and praised the coaching staff for making adjustments that helped turn a tight contest into a lopsided one
The lightning-quick Kaivohn Pitts carried 27 times for 195 yards and two touchdowns for Section 6 champ Health Sciences (9-4)
Jordan Oliver added a 1-yard run with 6:40 remaining
then connected with Alante Green for 21-yard TD with 3:22 to play
Ocker's day also included 41 rushing yards on seven carries
including drawing a defender in before pitching to the speedy Mancini on the option play that initiated the third-quarter barrage
"Preston does a great job identifying that at the line," Gallagher said of that touchdown
"He was able to see those things and adjust from there
"Those big runs don’t happen unless you’re blocking downfield
But our guys on the edges also do a great job blocking."
"Today in my mind he was a state championship quarterback
And he was able to identify some things that allowed us to get down the field
When you can do that and have the guys in the backfield

An offensive explosion by Maine-Endwell in the first half was accompanied by defensive dominance over the final three quarters
Those combined forces led to a 42-21 victory over Owego Free Academy in the Section 4 Class B football championship game Saturday at Johnson City High School
The Spartans put up 334 yards and 35 points in the opening half
but three long touchdowns had the River Hawks even on the scoreboard early in the second quarter
An interception from defensive tackle Max Hansbrough was the first of four picks for the M-E defense
and it set up a 15-yard touchdown run from Tyler Mathews that put the Spartans ahead for good
Preston Ocker hit Vinny Mancini for a 70-yard touchdown two minutes later
"It was awesome," M-E coach Matt Gallagher said of his team's championship effort
and we made sure that our guys understood before the game and after the game
Winning the section championship is a big deal
No other team beat the River Hawks during an 8-2 season that ranks among the best in program history
Maine-Endwell added to a program profile that is among New York's most successful
The Spartans secured their 13th sectional title and fourth in a row
Maine-Endwell was Class B state runner-up last year after winning championships in 2021 and 2022
The Spartans have seven state titles total
Gallagher said this year's team is a close unit that is constantly together on and off the field
and I think this group loves to play football," he said

Evan English caught nine of the throws for 100 yards
M-E defense found its footingAfter giving up 121 yards to Palladino on his first seven carries
the Spartans limited him to 19 on his final 10 rushes
They also tightened up the passing windows for Lewis
who converted multiple third-down throws just past the chains in the first half
get everything done and just go through the process we do every week," Rollo said
Gallagher said nothing changed from a strategy standpoint
crediting his players with stepping up to take control
"It's really about making sure they’re focused
and they understand little things we might have not been able to do," he said
It’s our guys going out there and playing."
This was the second season as Owego head coach for Patton Taylor
a Tioga Central graduate who earned a baseball scholarship to Penn State
"Coach Taylor and the rest of the crew over there as far as coaches
they had their guys prepared," Gallagher said
and we were able to get some more points on the board and finish it off."

M-E is ranked first in New York in Class B
same thing as every week," Rollo said of M-E's approach next week
we’re one of the best teams in the state."
Maine-Endwell kept its unbeaten record intact and moved within one victory of a fourth consecutive state final with a 48-22 win over Indian River on Saturday at Cicero-North Syracuse High School
After Section 3 champ Indian River scored a tying touchdown midway through the second quarter on Colton White's one-handed catch in the end zone
the Spartans reeled off 34 points in a row on the way to a 48-22 win in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class B quarterfinal
M-E's Landon Rollo produced 142 rushing yards and five touchdowns on only seven carries
Jaden Branch added a 57-yard interception return for a touchdown with 2:24 left in the first half to send the Spartans into the intermission with a 28-14 advantage
On the first play from scrimmage of the second half
M-E's Vinny Mancini took an option pitch and ran for a 50-yard touchdown
Rollo followed with a 44-yard score two minutes later for a 41-14 advantage

the Maine-Endwell football team left Syracuse feeling the sting of falling one victory short of a state championship
A back-and-forth New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class B final tilted Port Jervis' way in the end Saturday
with junior quarterback Dylan Fox scoring the tiebreaking touchdown on a 5-yard run with 23 seconds remaining to propel the Raiders to a 33-26 victory at the JMA Wireless Dome
Maine-Endwell ended up 13-1 in its bid for a third state championship in the last four seasons and state record-tying eighth overall for the program. Last year the Spartans lost to Rye, 28-7
after claiming back-to-back championships in 2021 and 2022
Maine-Endwell had been 7-0 in state finals before 2023
I’d rather lose with the bunch we had than win without them," M-E head coach Matt Gallagher said
they did everything they possibly could to get us over the top
(The seniors are) going to be better men for what they put themselves through over the last four years
Pretty special and we’re going to miss them."
Section 9 champion Port Jervis (12-1) secured the program's first state championship in its first appearance in a final
The Raiders never trailed after scoring on the opening possession and led 20-6 before M-E battled back twice to tie in the second half
then at 26-26 with just over 2 minutes remaining
"It means everything," Port Jervis head coach Damien Striharsky said of the title
Everyone knew what we could do and we just had to show up and do our thing."
Section 4 didn't win a state football championship this year for the first time since 2017 and second time since 2010
The winning touchdown was the final offensive touch on a brilliant day for Fox
He completed 15 of 23 passes for 315 yards and 2 touchdowns
Fox was shaken up late in the first half on a hard tackle
His coach said Fox "lost his breath a bit" and he bounced back to deliver for his team in the second half
Anthony Theodore added two touchdowns for Port Jervis and caught 5 passes for 143 yards
Theodore's 4-yard run opened the scoring and his extra-effort 58-yard TD catch on a screen put Port Jervis up 26-20 with 6:27 remaining
Theodore escaped a would-be tackle after he looked to be stopped short of the first down on fourth-and-4
Fox's other TD pass was a 30-yarder to Carroll Dolshun on a pump-and-go pattern down the sideline to break a 6-6 tie
Eighth-grade linebacker Ben Rivera led the Raiders with 9 tackles

Jaden Branch and Landon Rollo each ran for two touchdowns for Maine-Endwell
Branch carried 21 times for 119 yards and scored on runs of 2 yards and 1 yard
Striharsky said Port Jervis made a halftime adjustment to close the middle of the field and the Raiders stuffed Branch on multiple runs in the second half
Branch found room again for a 20-yard gain that set up Rollo's tying touchdown on a 14-yard option pitch with 2:05 remaining
Rollo was stopped well short of the end zone on the same play as the Spartans went for 2 points instead of kicking
"If we aren’t fortunate to get the first one
we usually go for two after that," Gallagher said when asked about going for 2
Vinny Mancini rushed for 90 yards on 9 carries for M-E
The Spartans' Luca Konrad had 7 tackles and a sack
Policare's pick came with the score tied 20-20 near the end of the third quarter
but M-E was unable to capitalize after Mancini's 37-yard TD run was called back because of a holding penalty
A bit of bad fortune for M-E and some impressive hands from Dolshun gave Port Jervis the ball at Maine-Endwell's 46-yard line on the final drive
Dolshun caught a line drive at midfield on a kickoff that went right to him
Fox hit Austin Mack for an 8-yard gain to get the ball to the 36-yard line
then connected over the middle with Cameron Barber for a 27-yard play
Fox went up the middle for the deciding 5-yard TD
Maine-Endwell's desperation series of pitches as time expired wound up 90 yards from the end zone
The message around Port Jervis during the week was "die empty," Striharsky said
"Just leave it out on the field and just do everything they can to make the plays they can," he said
Gallagher was tough on himself during the postgame interview
We just fell a little short today and that’s on me
Gallagher added of M-E's second consecutive state runner-up finish
"They won the first two and did it with class
Striharsky said Port Jervis' success Saturday largely came down to preparation and execution
"The biggest thing was just execution," he said

A town of Union man has nearly finished building the first of what he hopes will be many houses in an Endwell neighborhood
Michael Malarkey purchased land for the "spec house" project at O'Day Drive and Taft Avenue last summer
The builder decided to construct a single-family home before lining up a buyer
He said it's now about three-quarters complete
Officials in the town of Union said they believe it's the first "spec house" built in the area in many years
Malarkey hasn't listed the house for sale yet, although he did post it a few weeks ago on the Zillow website
Malarkey is seeking $349,900 for the three-bedroom house which has two bathrooms
The builder said he's received a few inquiries from people expressing an interest in the house
Malarkey said he decided to start construction before finding a buyer because there's a need for this type of home in Broome County
A Broome County economic development study conducted in 2017 noted very few spec houses were being built in the region

The third in a series profiling some of Broome County’s top high school athletic programs of the 21st century:
Among the all-timers across all sports in Section 4 is Maine-Endwell’s football program
Beginning with a 29-0 win against Chenango Valley in the 2011 season opener
** Strung a New York-record 62 consecutive victories
** Outscored opponents in that streak by a 41-11 norm
** Limited 35 opponents to single-digit point totals
a state record for consecutive titles earned
The streak ended with a 43-26 loss to Buffalo South Park in a 2015 semifinal
M-E squandering a 14-0 first-quarter lead in that one
and it marked the Spartans’ first loss since a 2010 quarterfinal against Whitesboro
What followed were four successive seasons failing to qualify for state playoffs
But then came 2021 and a 12-1 season capped by a state championship
The 2023 Spartans rolled unbeaten into the final before absorbing a 28-7 loss from a clearly superior Rye squad in the JMA Wireless Dome
One could argue that Maine-Endwell established itself as a power for keeps in the autumn of 2011 with a 19-16 state-semifinal win against Rochester Aquinas
long a football blueblood and presumed by most far too tall a task for M-E
on moved the Spartans the next weekend to the program’s second state championship
Maine-Endwell’s overall record in state tournament competition: An astounding 25-4

a builder is constructing a single-family "spec house" on a lot in the town of Union
A developer acquired the land for the project at the corner of Taft Avenue and O'Day Drive in Endwell in early July
The house is being built on speculation that a buyer will be found shortly after it's been completed
The site is about two miles north of Country Club Road
Long-time builder Michael Malarkey said he started work on the house a couple of months ago
While working at the site Wednesday morning
he told WNBF News he expects construction to be finished in about three months
noting it appears to be the first spec house project built locally in many years
He said he's "thrilled that someone is putting some faith in the area" with what eventually could lead to the construction of dozens of other single-family homes in the town
Mack said he's hoping Malarkey's initiative will encourage other builders to consider similar projects on land that's available in the town
A 2017 housing study commissioned by Broome County economic development officials noted very few spec houses were being built locally
The study said that forces buyers to look for suitable houses in the resale market

Both teams had superlative offensive efforts in state semifinals. Maine-Endwell was a 50-30 winner over Buffalo Health Sciences Charter after leading by 36 early in the final quarter
"It’s always a privilege to be able to get back there," M-E senior Vinny Mancini said after scoring three touchdowns in the semifinal
More: Record 62-game win streak part of Maine-Endwell’s football resume
Maine-Endwell brings in a 7-1 record in state championship games, with last year's 28-7 loss to Rye the lone blemish
That setback ended the Spartans' 34-game winning streak
M-E is again seeking to match Rochester Aquinas for the most football state titles in New York state history
M-E captured state championships each year from 2011 to 2014
has been at the helm for all but one of those titles
is led by dual-threat quarterback Dylan Fox and running back Carroll Dolshun
Fox ran for 147 yards and threw for four TDs against Glens Falls
Dolshun had five touchdown runs in a 49-14 triumph against Marlboro in the Section 9 final
"We’re excited about playing them," Gallagher said
so hopefully we’ll kind of limit that and then we can put some points on the board as well."
Port Jervis is playing in its first state football final
The Raiders have won six consecutive Section 9 championships
I know the coach down there and they’ve always been pretty good," Gallagher said
"This is the first time we’re ever going to play them though
so they’re my rival school down there a long time ago."
the lone loss for Port Jervis this season came to Gallagher's alma mater
Maine-Endwell has scored at least 40 points in 11 of its 13 games and averages 44 per contest
The Spartans have won all but two of their games by multiple touchdowns. Their closest battle was a 42-41 overtime win over 2023 Class C state champion Waverly
played the Spartans to a 21-14 result after falling behind 21-0
The Spartans have some of the most electrifying offensive players in Section 4
but they espouse a "we" instead of "me" approach that has been a standard at M-E
junior quarterback Preston Ocker threw for four touchdowns
His running ability is also a big part of M-E's success
217-pound senior bruiser with the ability to break off long touchdowns
He ran for 149 yards on 13 carries against Health Sciences
Tyler Mathews has consistently provided big plays as a runner
Mancini is among the section's fastest players and has scored from midfield on option pitches on the Spartans' first play of the second half the past two weeks
"Definitely one of the advantages we have is a lot of weapons," Rollo said after the Spartans dominated the second half in the Section 4 final against Owego

Batch Coffee is bringing their business into Endwell
the third coffee shop for the brand based in Binghamton
the brand expanded from beer to coffee with the opening of their first shop on Chenango Bridge Road in October 2022
Another Batch location is housed next to Factory by Beer Tree at Oakdale Commons in Johnson City
The new business will be situated at 3010 E Main Street in Endwell
Harder is anticipating the store to be open in six to eight weeks
The idea to expand into the Endwell area came about as the company found there was a need for a drive-thru coffee shop in the area
Customers were "driving across town," he said
More: Big Lots stores across the U.S. are closing. Are Binghamton, Vestal stores on the list?
Harder and the rest of the team have been working on opening the Endwell location
and all aspects of the expansion "worked out pretty well."
All of Batch's in-house roasted coffee beans
and coffee will be sourced from their Chenango location
and the entire operation will be similar to that spot
with a sit-in cafe and drive-thru open seven days a week from 6 a.m
Batch Coffee has moved quickly to transform a closed Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Endwell into its next shop
already operate Batch Coffee shops in Chenango Bridge and at the Oakdale Commons in Johnson City
The company acquired the vacant KFC site at 3010 East Main Street in Endwell in mid-September for $370,000
Partners Brendan Harder and Chris Rhoades said the job of renovating the old restaurant building started about six weeks ago
Crews have been busy with a makeover of the interior and exterior of the place
Harder and Rhoades were on hand Wednesday as workers were being trained for the new Batch Coffee shop
About 20 people have been hired to staff the site
Rhoades said the location is scheduled to open on November 13
He said it's expected to operate from 6 a.m
The Endwell shop will have the same offerings as the Chenango Bridge and Johnson City locations
Batch Coffee's expansion will continue
A grab-and-go location in Endicott is to open early next year
That drive-up site will operate out of a former M&T Bank facility at 28 Garfield Avenue
That location has been unused for nearly 17 years
since the bank closed its drive-up unit there in January 2008

Some recent signs of activity outside a closed McDonald's restaurant in Endwell have residents wondering whether a new business will be opening at the site
The fast food operation at 3333 East Main Street closed suddenly 18 months ago
McDonald's representatives did not say why the place was shut down 23 years after it opened at the site of the old Hooper School
The property has been owned by Golden Arch Limited Partership
The town of Union's governmental offices were in the former school building before the structure was sold to McDonald's for $82,000 in 1997
The old school was demolished and a restaurant building was constructed on the site
The property's full market value now is $1.2 million
After the restaurant closed early last year
the McDonald's signage at the site was removed and most of the equipment in the building was removed
people in the Endwell neighborhood have been keeping an eye on the place with a hope that someone would buy the property and redevelop it
big concrete blocks suddenly were placed at all entrances to the property prompting speculation that it had been sold
Town supervisor Robert Mack said he hasn't heard anything to indicate the site has changed hands
He said he's not aware of any plans for a new business for the location
there is an indication that something's may be in the works
Online property records now list the owner of the 1.7-acre site as "UNKNOWN."

Landon Rollo went in motion and took the pitch from quarterback Preston Ocker before outracing Waverly's defense to the corner of the end zone for the winning points

That play followed a 5-yard touchdown run from Jaden Branch that brought the Spartans within one
It was Branch's fourth TD of the afternoon
Fletcher Good's 20-yard run and a PAT from Hogan Shaw gave Waverly a seven-point lead after the first overtime possession
Seven-time New York state champion Maine-Endwell (4-0) entered the contest ranked first in Class B by the New York State Sports Writers Association
Defending state champ Waverly (3-1) is New York's top-ranked Class C team
Their first meeting in five years more than lived up to the hype
with the Spartans overcoming a 34-26 deficit to force overtime
Branch set up the tying points with a 17-yard touchdown run in which he ran through multiple Waverly defenders
He added the 2-point run on a pitch play to knot the score 34-34 with 1:28 to go in regulation
Waverly led 20-12 at halftime behind big plays out of its passing game
hit Dalton Davis for a 73-yard touchdown with 7:13 left in the first half to give the Wolverines a 7-6 lead
Shaw's 8-yard touchdown pass to Good was followed by a 17-yard scoring strike to Xavier Watson to help the Wolverines lead 20-12 at halftime
Watson's touchdown was set up when Waverly recovered a fumble on the kickoff after Good's score
Watson's 8-yard TD catch and Shaw's PAT gave Waverly a 27-26 lead
He followed with a 26-yard TD reception with 6:36 remaining to help put the Wolverines up eight
Branch had touchdown runs of 3 and 15 yards to account for Maine-Endwell's first-half points
Maine-Endwell took a 26-20 lead on a 1-yard sneak from Ocker and a 30-yard TD pass from Ocker to Vinny Mancini
This was the teams' first meeting since Maine-Endwell won 47-27 in the third week of 2019
Maine-Endwell goes from one showdown to another
The Spartans take on unbeaten Chenango Forks (4-0) at 7 p.m
Waverly is home against Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour at the same time
A look at Maine-Endwell as season opener approaches:
“Expectations never change here,” said coach Matt Gallagher
presumably referring to yet another dose of December football – ideally concluding with a contest played in that comfortably climate-controlled venue in Syracuse
M-E teams have absorbed three losses since 2019 and competed in three successive Class B state championship games
The Spartans will feature an offensive backfield potentially second-to-none in Section 4
the offensive and defensive fronts that were the meat of last year’s runner-up finish were wiped out the day seniors accepted diplomas last June
M-E has a way of tending effectively to such matters
The backfield group consists of returners Vinny Mancini (180 pounds)
Landon Rollo (195) and fullback Jaden Branch (220)
to be joined by first-season quarterback starter Preston Ocker
The three running backs double as linebackers
so we’ll go ahead and assume that part of the defense is in good hands
Guard Lucas Lattner (210) is the lone returning starter on either line
Tyler Mathews (175) is back at free safety and Max Policare at cornerback
newcomers to the starting lineup (starting spots listed first):
C/DT Lou Cafario (225); OT Cole Medina (240); CB/SE Cooper Klinger (182); TE/DE Luca Konrad (205); DT/OT Cam Hosier (295); SE/DE Logan McGuire (200); LB/FB Kazio Jellick (195); OG Teague Blanchard (185); OT James VanAuken (200)

Former Maine-Endwell High School cheerleading coaches Natalie Nirchi
Daniella Weston and Cara Connelly have issued a statement following their resignation from the school
the coaches said their choice to resign "did not come easily," and does not reflect "a lack of love" for the athletes or "passion for the sport of cheerleading."
"Our commitment to our athletes has always been our top priority," the coaches said in an email statement
"We are incredibly proud of the progress they have made
circumstances beyond our control have made it increasingly difficult to uphold the standards and values we believe are necessary for a healthy and successful program
We have always strived to create an environment where athletes can grow
not only as cheerleaders but as individuals
and this decision was made in the best interest of maintaining those ideals
We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to have worked with such talented and dedicated athletes over the last 12 years— memories we made will last a lifetime."
More on this story: Maine-Endwell cheerleading coaches resign; hundreds sign petition for reinstatement
A Change.org petition circulating on social media this week had called for the school district to reinstate the coaches
Maine-Endwell School District Superintendent Jason Van Fossen said Thursday while the district does not comment on personnel matters

the safety of our students is always our priority," Van Fossen said
"These coaches resigned voluntarily and were not terminated by the district
We are currently in the process of hiring new coaches so that our team can continue their season."
A man was arrested after a police pursuit that started in Endicott and wound up in a residential neighborhood in Endwell
An Endicott police officer reportedly tried to stop a 2017 Honda Civic that had been reported stolen in Johnson City two days earlier
The car didn't pull over in the area of Broad Street and Garfield Avenue around 1:20 p.m
The vehicle instead continued on as it was pursued to Endicott's North Side

where it traveled east on Country Club Road and north into a residential area
the vehicle apparently traveled through the Church of the Holy Family parking lot before heading south
Broome County sheriff's deputies and state troopers assisted in the pursuit
The car eventually turned into a parking lot of the Squire Colony apartment complex off Smith Drive
The man then ditched the vehicle and ran through the neighborhood
Police searched the area and spotted the suspected driver walking on Columbia Drive a few minutes later
He claimed he lived in a home on that street
Officers took him into custody without incident
was charged with criminal possession of stolen property and unlawfully fleeing a police officer

Maine-Endwell’s historic football win streak is a thing of the past

It was the program’s first loss since a 2010 state-quarterfinal setback at the hands of Whitesboro

South Park becomes the first Buffalo city school to make the state final
The lead was South Park’s for keeps once Brown rushed 9 yards for a TD 5:11 into the third quarter
That score made it 22-14 and came two plays after an 8-yard Spartans punt
M-E (11-1) drew within 22-20 on a 65-yard rush by quarterback Kyle Balmer with 2:40 to play in the third quarter
but South Park responded with scoring plays of 70 and 43 yards in a span of under three minutes bridging the third and fourth quarters— the second one on a fumble return after an errant pitch by Balmer
