Former Englewood Cliffs Mayor Mario Kranjac is expected to enter the race for the Republican nomination for governor within the next few days
A former two-term mayor of Englewood Cliffs and a close friend of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich
Kranjac became the first Republican mayor of tiny Englewood Cliffs (pop
5,342) in 40 years after the retirement of Joseph Parisi
Parisi had become mayor a decade earlier after the death of his father
He was re-elected to a second term by a ten-point margin in 2019
Kranjac will have the backing of Mike Crispi, the chairman of America First Republicans of New Jersey. Crispi, who launched an exploratory committee last year
said tonight that he will not run for governor
While Crispi didn’t mention Kranjac by name
he said the candidate “has stood unwaveringly for President Trump and the MAGA base over the last nine years” and will be able to unite Republicans and appeal to independents to forge a winning general election campaign
He will join a race that includes State Sen
including former Burlington City Mayor Jim Fazzone
Kranjac has not been invited to participate in the New Jersey Globe Republican Gubernatorial Primary Debate on February 4
The New Jersey Globe first reported Kranjac’s exploration of a run for governor in June

Samsung Electronics is planning to move its North American headquarters from Ridgefield Park to Englewood Cliffs in 2025
just months after consumer goods company Unilever plans to move out
NorthJersey.com was the first to report last week that Unilever — which makes consumer brands from Axe body spray to Vaseline and formerly Ben & Jerry's ice cream — would move out of its longtime headquarters at 700 Sylvan Ave
Later on, several news outlets reported that Unilever would occupy three stories at 111,000 square feet at SJP’s Waterfront Corporate Center 1 in Hoboken
A spokesperson for Samsung did not specify the exact address of its new Englewood Cliffs location
adding only that the move would occur in the summer of 2025
which is just months after Unilever’s planned departure from Englewood Cliffs in March 2025

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS — The borough has agreed to pay $7 million to the developer of 800 Sylvan Ave
to settle a lawsuit over affordable housing at the site
It will pay $1.3 million more to 800 Sylvan Avenue LLC to settle a tax appeal on the property
The developer claimed in the suit that the borough had violated the terms of an affordable housing agreement
and it was seeking $66.5 million in damages
The borough has been engaged in a contentious and lengthy legal battle with the various developers of the property since 2015
That lawsuit went to trial in 2019 after hundreds of residents crowded a public meeting to demand that the borough fight in court rather than settle
Superior Court Judge Christine Farrington stripped its Planning Board of the ability to review land use applications and development plans
including the project at the center of the litigation
She said then that the borough had refused to abide by the court's mandates
The borough reached a settlement agreement with Fair Share Housing Center in 2020
allowing 450 units at the former Unilever campus on Sylvan Avenue
including 90 set aside as low- and moderate-income units
The agreement also called for about 60 units at the borough's Hudson Terrace property
after a change in the council's political majority
the borough filed a lawsuit seeking to void all council votes taken at a January 2019 meeting and at another lengthy meeting in 2020 that stretched more than 12 hours
alleging that two former council members had conflicts of interest
The borough's complaint also sought to invalidate any settlement agreements with Fair Share Housing Center or the developer looking to build at the former Unilever site
an appellate court ruled that the borough had to comply with the settlement agreement it had reached with the nonprofit housing advocacy group
The lawsuit brought by 800 Sylvan against the borough in August 2021 alleged that the borough breached the settlement agreement and “caused significant delays to the ultimate approval” of the project
The developer sought tens of millions in damages including legal fees
costs incurred to prepare alternative plans and construction delays stemming from alleged violations and breaches of the agreement
The complaint was scheduled to be heard this month in court before Farrington
The developer plans to build 450 multifamily units
four-story apartment building over ground-level parking and 112 townhomes behind the building
The Borough Council voted in September to approve the settlement and seek approval for an emergency budget appropriation to fund it
The borough is seeking approval from the state Department of Community Affairs to issue bonds to pay the $8.3 million to 800 Sylvan
with Republicans Philip Zhi Liang and Rivka Biegacz voting against it
said the settlement was an “unfortunate decision” made by the council and represented a “disheartening outcome” that will benefit the developer over the residents

“It is regrettable that the attorneys selected by the Democrat majority
The $66 million damages claim was “leveraged” by the council “as a tactic to incite fear and pressure a settlement
would impose penalties on the borough and reward 800 Sylvan with a significant financial gain.”
Democratic Councilman David Di Gregorio said he prioritized the interests of the residents in his vote to settle the suit
“I deeply regret that we must pay this settlement,” he said
appealing would have presented a significant risk
with little chance of success and the potential for us to owe double or even triple the current amount
I made a difficult but prudent decision to protect our residents from an unfavorable outcome.”
Former Englewood Cliffs Mayor Mario Kranjac has officially entered the race for governor
He announced Sunday night that he would be seeking the Republican nomination during the primary this spring
Kranjac said President Donald Trump “proved we can put America first.”
“Now we need to win in New Jersey to lower taxes
educate not indoctrinate our kids and enact term limits,” he said
“The Republicans who have been running for two years have failed to attract the kind of support they need to win
That’s why I filed for New Jersey governor.”
Kranjac seemingly watched the first debate among the Democratic candidates
because he noted in the post that they “showed us they're committed to continuing the failed policies of Gov
There are already four potential Republican nominees: state Sen
who narrowly lost to an incumbent Murphy in 2021

Who is Mario Kranjac?Kranjac led the Bergen County borough for eight years
the town was embroiled in years of litigation with developers over affordable housing
He opposed settling the suit and amassed more than $1 million in legal fees for borough taxpayers
Kranjac was censured by the Borough Council three times during his years leading the town
One was for trying to "politicize the council
lie to and deceive the residents," another was for allegedly threatening to punch then-Borough Attorney Albert Wunsch during a closed-session meeting
and the third was for submitting letters to the state pension board about multiple police officers and their pension benefits
He is alleging that Bergen County Judge Anthony Gallina is biased against him and requesting that a lawsuit by former borough employees be moved to another county

Earlier this week, MSNBC announced a programming shakeup of its weekday and weekend schedules set to take effect in April
These on-air changes, which were accompanied by layoffs, come as the network is on the hunt for new office, production, and studio space. Both MSNBC and CNBC are set to separate from the NBCUniversal News Group within the next few months and join SpinCo
the spin-off company that will house many of NBCUniversal’s cable assets
SpinCo CEO Mark Lazarus recently updated employees on the media entity’s separation plans from NBCUniversal
confirming that MSNBC will continue to be based in Manhattan
CNBC will continue to call its longtime Englewood Cliffs location home
and will also serve as SpinCo’s technical operations hub
Some of MSNBC’s technical staff will also be based in New Jersey
Both networks now have to rebuild their newsgathering operations
Lazarus noted CNBC and MSNBC will secure dedicated space at 400 North Capitol—the same building as NBC News operations.
The two news networks will additionally continue to keep office space in the various cities where they operate
where MSNBC’s programming changes means that the network will lose access to NBC News’ production facility
New York-based staffers were also alerted that they have to work out of temporary facilities in Manhattan if the NBC News spin-off is completed before their office space is built
It’s been reported that a new name for the spun-off company could be soon announced
but no firm date has been provided as to when that will be revealed
CEO Mark Lazarus says new co will have corp HQ in Manhattan.
Space will be procured at NBC News location in Washington DC
