Teofimo Lopez was sharp and fast in a win over Arnold Barboza Jr
Teofimo Lopez had his best performance in recent memory tonight in Times Square
retaining his WBO super lightweight title with a clear and deserved decision win over Arnold Barboza Jr
probably quiets some critics of some of his other recent outings
was just too fast and too sharp for the 33-year-old Barboza
who seemed to shrink just a bit in his first crack at a world title
He just didn’t have any real answers for Lopez’s noticeable speed advantage
and Teofimo’s focus never slipped or dipped in this one
Even when Barboza did catch him and bend his knees a bit with a good right hand
this was the best-looking Teofimo we’ve seen since his 2023 win over Josh Taylor
and maybe the best since his 2020 win over Vasiliy Lomachenko
The craftiness and solid boxing of Barboza never gave Teofimo much trouble
which we’ve seen happen in past fights and just didn’t tonight
Lopez said he’ll look into moving up to welterweight going forward
and made a call to face unified titleholder Jaron “Boots” Ennis
Jaron "Boots" Ennis defeated Eimantas Stanionis by sixth-round TKO to unify the IBF and WBA welterweight titles Saturday night in Atlantic City
It was a showdown between ESPN's top two welterweights
used a body attack to break down Stanionis
He used his jab to open Stanionis up and made him pay with hooks to the body
Stanionis started the fight attacking and landed a good counter left in the first round
while Ennis used his lead jab for most of the round and mixed some good body punches
Stanionis landed a couple of good overhand rights in the third
landing more body punches and using a very accurate jab that had Stanionis bleeding from the nose
Ennis kept landing the jab and using angles to connect to the body
He hit Stanionis with a flurry of body punches that forced Stanionis to take a knee
but Stanionis' trainer Marvin Somodio stopped the fight before the start of the seventh
"I feel like I was just getting in my groove
started getting loose," Ennis said after the fight
you're going to stop him.' And what's crazy was I had a dream I was going to stop him just like this in the seventh round
Ennis added: "The biggest part was me having my fun
being myself and having a live body in front of me
I showed you a little bit of inside game."
He landed only 19% of his total punches to Stanionis 31%
but he outlanded Stanionis 23-9 in power punches to the body

30 KOs) was making the third defense of his belt
He defeated Karen Chukhadzhian by unanimous decision in November
when he dropped Chukhadzhian in Round 5 and won by scores of 119-107
Ennis had beaten Chukhadzhian previously in January 2023
winning every round in all three judges' scorecards
Ennis has won six of his past eight fights by stoppage
9 KOs) was the WBA "regular" welterweight champion and then elevated to full champion when Terence Crawford moved up to junior middleweight to face Israil Madrimov in August 2024
Stanionis didn't fight in 2023 after a fight against Vergil Ortiz Jr
This was Stanionis' first professional defeat
enjoy these belts," Ennis said about his future
"I'll talk to the team and we're going to see what's next."
This was Ford's second victory since he moved up in weight to junior lightweight
following his split-decision defeat to Nick Ball in June 2024
"It was a solid opponent in there," Ford said after the fight
Ford said he would like his next fight to be against Eduardo Nunez
who takes on Masanori Rikiishi for the vacant IBF junior lightweight title on May 28 in Japan
"I've been telling [promoter] Eddie [Hearn] this
[Nunez] knows I want this fight," Ford said
So hopefully he goes over there and do his thing
bring that belt back so we can get it on."

Jaron "Boots" Ennis is fresh off a much-needed
decisive victory over Eimantas Stanionis in his last fight
and it appears we know who his next opponent will be
When Ennis scored a sixth-round TKO win over Stanionis on April 12
he added the WBA welterweight title to his IBF title to own half of the official world titles at 147 pounds
With new gold comes new responsibility–and sanctioning fees
The WBA has ordered Ennis to defend his title against mandatory contender
He scored a fourth-round KO win over Franco Ocampo on the undercard of Ennis-Stanionis
While no date or official agreement has been made
you can almost bet Ennis will fight Giyasov next
His pursuit to become an undisputed champion at welterweight is his best path to the superstardom and bigger paydays he seeks
Many will remember a tearful Giyasov talking about his daughter who recently passed away during his post-fight interview after his win over Ocampo
Giyasov presents a unique challenge—not only because of his record and Olympic pedigree—but because of the emotional weight he’s been carrying
His post-fight interview after the Ocampo knockout revealed a layer of humanity that’s easy to root for
and Ennis is a different kind of problem than anyone Giyasov has faced so far
The welterweight title picture could be getting more interesting
WBC champion Barrios is said to be pushing for a fight against retired all-time great
Brian Norman is already set to defend his title against Jin Sasaki in Tokyo on June 19
Ennis’ win over Stanionis served as more than just another belt
Many in the boxing world have been critical of Ennis’ most recent performances
Taking out a gritty and respected fighter like Stanionis with such ease slowed down some of the critiques
The win gave Boots another title and leverage in the welterweight hierarchy
Boots' unification bouts will be even bigger if he's facing the winner of Norman-Sasaki
The question for Ennis will be can he consistently make 147 pounds
the rest of the division seems to be moving into place for a second-half-of-the-year shakeup
Should Pacquiao truly return to face Barrios
Barrios is what could eventually define this current era at welterweight
and you’d think Barrios should beat Pacquiao–if that fight happens
there isn’t an opponent currently on the horizon who Ennis would be favored over if the fight was made
An announcement for Ennis-Giyasov could be coming soon
and depending on what happens with Norman-Sasaki and Barrios-Pacquiao
Boots’ next unification fight could come in the early part of 2026

Through volunteerism in both his community and the industry
he has helped expand housing opportunity and homeownership to countless others
For his groundbreaking association leadership and advocacy, Antoine has been named a 2025 Fair Housing Champion by the National Association of REALTORS®
He was recognized at an April 10 Fair Housing Month event hosted by NAR
he and his parents obtained real estate licenses
He joined a large real estate company in New Orleans and set a goal of achieving independence
he moved into his own apartment and started a family

and Antoine and his wife wanted something better for their three sons
but that all changed when they found Jackson Memorial Baptist Church
The church’s members quickly became Antoine’s extended family and within its walls
The friends he made at Jackson Memorial helped Antoine build his real estate business

He expanded to working as the preferred agent in many new residential developments
he remained committed to serving others through activities such as teaching Sunday school to the at-risk young men in his church and serving as a mentor in organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters and 100 Black Men
He says he feels a responsibility to show young men a better way of living and to expose them to new possibilities
That includes the possibility to build wealth through real estate ownership
a goal that feels out of reach for too many

in a fight where he dropped Chukhadzhian in Round 5 and won by scorecards of 119-107
has a rare combination of power and speed and has won five of his last seven fights by stoppage
He has great footwork and can throw punches from any angle
His goal is to collect all four major welterweight titles before moving to 154 pounds
"I'm here to collect all the belts and I'm locked in on Stanionis," said Ennis during a training session Monday in Philadelphia
who trains at Wild Card Boxing Club in Los Angeles
said he had a strong camp and he's been "grinding nonstop."
I treat it like a fight," Stanionis said while training in Los Angeles on Tuesday
This is the best version of me the world has ever seen

keep Stanionis at a distance and land his combinations

is the favorite to defeat Eimantas Stanionis in a welterweight unification fight Saturday in Atlantic City. Matchroom BoxingI remember when I covered Ennis the first time at Showbox and was impressed
The hardest thing for an Ennis opponent to figure out is the way he attacks you from different angles
how he switches from right to left and throws three- and four-punch combinations -- and he's being creative with those combinations
Ennis has great footwork and upper-body movement
you don't even realize he's doing it -- it comes naturally to him -- and that's why he catches you with those shots because you don't know where they are coming from
since he comes from a good amateur background and he's been in the ring with some other good
he's going to have to walk Ennis down but be smart and don't give up
but you've got to invest in a body attack early on
because it's going to be hard to hit the head
and hopefully in the second half of the fight
Stanionis needs to do that behind a really good jab
Even though he might feel that he's going to get hit
he's going to have to jab his way in with a lot of faints
He's got to make the ring smaller for Ennis
fast jab to the body and head and arms -- hoping that he wears Ennis down after the sixth round
but in the second half of the fight he could take over
It takes a really good fighter in great shape to beat another really skillful fighter that's in great shape
Breaking him down is the only way to do it
You're not going to outbox a guy like that
But if he lets Stanionis come forward and cut the distance and do his job
but he's a fighter who will always come forward and throw punches
During my training for the fight with Ennis
we focused on his right hand and left hook
In the short time the fight lasted [Ennis KO'd Dulorme at 1:49 of the first round]
But Ennis has very good defense and movement in the ring
he must keep his distance and not let Stanionis get him at close range
Ennis will pick up his pace and it's going to be a tough night for Stanionis
needs to get inside and pressure Jaron Ennis to be able to score an upset on Saturday. Melina Pizano/Matchroom BoxingIf Stanionis manages to exchange or throw punches at the same time as Ennis
but Ennis is more athletic and has more movement
if Stanionis waits to build a defense before counterpunching
Stanionis must throw his punches at the same time as Ennis and not let him reset his defense
If Stanionis is successful doing that -- and Stanionis has a good punch -- he can win
pushing and punching from any angle when he's at close range
Maidana had a style like Stanionis -- staying in one place
attacking without great technique -- but he was a great fighter and he did what he had to do
He closed the distance and got in front of Broner
The important thing in every fight is the result
I'm leaning toward the boxer and I think Ennis wins by knockout
but whoever manages to take control of the distance will win
Jaron Ennis remained undefeated with a 10th-round KO of Roiman Villa in July 2023. Amanda Westcott/SHOWTIMEI fought Ennis
[Ennis beat him by 10th-round TKO in 2023.] I haven't fought Stanionis
I'm a fighter who is willing to take a few punches to land my own
but the problem with doing that against Ennis is that he's very hard to hit
it feels like someone's thrown a brick at your head
Ennis has good footwork and waist movement
with Cruz being a two-time Olympic champion
I wanted to hit him once compared to the three he hit me with
He'd get on the ropes and start moving and moving
and you don't see them because he's a fast fighter
He moves at an angle and throws uppercuts inside
He can't let him think because Ennis is a clever
and I took all the punches from Ellis and from Ennis
eventually I got tired from the punches I took
he'll knock you out and your hair won't grow back
Stanionis is strong and throws good punches
has the edge in all aspects of the fight and I expect him to put on a stellar performance in what should be an action-packed fight
If you strongly feel that Ennis is going to win
you can place equal wagers on him to win by KO/TKO and to win by decision
and you bet the same amount on both outcomes
make Ennis the anchor of a parlay and enjoy the cashout at the end of the night
it wouldn't be of any value to put Ford in a parlay
there is a play that sticks out and that's to take Ford to win by decision at -170
I think this will be a more competitive fight than the odds scream
and based off of Ford's last two fights going to decision
Jaron "Boots" Ennis left no question over his status atop the welterweight division on Saturday night
Facing the toughest opponent of his career
scoring a stoppage victory after Stanionis' corner threw in the towel following the sixth round
With the win Ennis claimed the WBA and Ring Magazine welterweight belts while defending his IBF title for a third time and solidifying himself as the division's top fighter
you're going to stop him," Ennis said in the ring afterwards
"What's crazy though is I had a dream I was going to stop him just like this
The stoppage came after Ennis scored a knockdown late in Round 6 of the fight
pushing Stanionis into the corner where he unloaded a handful of body punches that forced Stanionis to drop a knee to the canvas
but in the corner afterwards his trainer decided he'd seen enough and called an end to the fight
Ennis had drawn plenty of criticism in the buildup to this fight for his recent performances
having gone the distance against Karen Chukhadzhian last November and looking less than his best in a stoppage win over David Avanesyan earlier that year
He silenced any doubters on Saturday night
crediting Stanionis' willingness to fight as having brought the best out of him
something his team claimed would be the case during fight week
"Like I said when I got a live body in front of me it's a whole different story
you're going to see a whole different 'Boots' and I'm going to keep taking it to the next level."
After the fight Ennis was non-committal regarding his next move
but he'll have no shortage of enticing options after becoming unified champion at welterweight
Ennis has flirted with the idea of moving up to 154 pounds in the past
while further unifications against WBO champion Brian Norman Jr
and WBC champion Mario Barrios await at welterweight
'Boots' wanted to unify," promoter Eddie Hearn said
People criticized him about not moving up and not fighting for a belt
He said all I want to do is fight the champions
We stayed patient and it paid off tonight."

To prove the latter, Ennis will need to consider tests against the other titleholders at 147 (Brian Norman Jnr and Mario Barrios), some high-profile recent entries in the division (Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney) and challenges further up the scale (Vergil Ortiz Jnr and others). Choices, choices. … So we put the question to our BoxingScene staff: Who should Ennis fight next?
Ryan Songalia: There’s only one answer that comes to mind for me: Ortiz. I know there is still some unfinished business at 147lbs in terms of unifying the belts, but after the statement Ennis made Saturday against Stanionis, I don’t personally need to see him fight the other belt holders.
Right now, Ennis needs a statement opponent, a fighter whom the public knows and whose name would move the needle. Ortiz has that respect, and there’s an angle that can be explored, as Ortiz was supposed to fight Stanionis but couldn’t get to fight night. After seeing Ennis’ body on fight week, I’m sure he would love the opportunity to drink water in the days leading up to a fight for a change.
Lucas Ketelle: Norman, who holds the WBO title, and Ennis could look to capture three of the four major titles in the division. A backstory also exists between the teams. It makes sense if Ennis wants to stay at welterweight. Norman might be the only welterweight who can match Ennis’ athletic traits, though Ennis seems to be in a league of his own after Saturday night.
Declan Warrington: Ortiz. I recognize the appeal of Norman and Barrios, and of becoming the undisputed champion, but Stanionis represented a tougher fight than either of those two are on course to, and Ennis moved up a level in the process of victory, so there’s no doubting he’s the leading welterweight in the world.
Jason Langendorf: The Ennis fight I would most like to see is probably no different than yours: Ortiz. That seems unlikely to happen (at least for now) after botched negotiations left bad blood that still stirs. Meanwhile, there’s too much money to be made for Garcia and Haney to take any path other than following their Times Square fights with a rematch against one another.
Ennis’ most prudent path looks like further unifying – and perhaps becoming undisputed – at welterweight, the sort of stuff that Hall of Fame resumes are made of. With any luck, Terence Crawford will still be an option in the not-too-distant future. If not, Sebastian Fundora and perhaps even Xander Zayas could make for legacy-building, lucrative matchups.
Elliot Worsell: Although Norman and Barrios are more likely options in the short term, I’m impatient, so I’ll say Ortiz. A fight between Ennis and Ortiz is the most appealing option, stylistically, to me at least, and I would rather they get it made sooner than later. We all know what tends to happen when you wait.
Owen Lewis: Ortiz. So often we talk about Ennis like he’s already a junior middleweight, and the jump from 147lbs is significant. If he makes the leap, it’ll be a gift to boxing fans, not merely a fulfillment of expectations. But I think he would destroy Barrios, who is among the more vulnerable titleholders, and though Norman is a more interesting fight, Ortiz is the dream fight.
Ortiz is certainly the best junior middleweight without a title, and maybe the best overall, while Ennis is the unquestionable – if not undisputed – king at welterweight. This is already a legacy fight for each of them and as sure a bet for an action fight as any matchup in the sport. Both are offensive machines with tendencies to let their aggression get them into trouble. I think we would see knockdowns, astonishing durability and the winner becoming the new darling of boxing.

Senate Bill 260 sponsored by Republican Senator Greg Hertz
allows tax dollars to move more fluidly between hospital and school districts that are within the same county but face geographic obstacles
but the bill gets to the heart of a current conflict already playing out in southwestern Montana
Ennis and part of Big Sky are both in Madison County
The communities are separated by the Madison mountain range
as workers and tourists frequently travel between the two
And over the last few years the towns have been entangled in a dispute over special tax district boundaries–set for schools and hospitals.
Big Sky residents want to redirect tax dollars to local schools and hospitals
school and hospital districts have come to rely on the high-taxable value of Big Sky properties and resisted the loss of the tax dollars
At its first public hearing in February
community members from Big and Ennis traveled to Helena to speak for and against SB 260.“To spend 2 hours and 180 miles when you are sick is ridiculous."
"Redistricting would significantly raise the taxes of residents of Ennis creating a financial burden that could be devastating to many working class families."
But amendments to the bill brought both sides together
Now the bill outlines a payment plan spread out over eight years
to slowly shift away tax revenue from the old district to the new district
while allowing a path forward to redraw the school and hospital boundaries
says the hospital initially did not support the bill
But the longer transition time allows for strategic planning
“We expect there to be really no reduction in our services
in fact we will continue to expand our services and we'll continue to grow with the community.” Rohrbach said
Executive Director of Big Sky Resort Area District
says there is still a lot of work to be done
“If we can find a way for us to reach a compromise and we did
at the end of the day that is going to be healthier for us as neighbors.” Bierschwale said
Bierschwale says he doesn’t know of any other hospital districts facing the same situation
but hopes this legislation might be helpful to other school districts struggling with the same issue

NEW JERSEY - APRIL 11: Jaron Ennis and Eimantas Stanionis pose after the weigh-in for ..
WBA and Ring Magazine welterweight championship fight at the Circus Maximus at Caesars Atlantic City on April 11
Jaron “Boots” Ennis is a unified welterweight champion
Ennis scored a sixth-round TKO win over a game but overmatched Eimantas Stanionis on Saturday night in Atlantic City
Ennis’ body work did the majority of the damage
It was that investment that led to the stoppage
Ennis dropped Stanionis in the sixth round
His corner noticed and took some pressure off their fighter
making the right decision to stop the fight
Stanionis did have some moments as he landed the left hooks that Karen Chukhadzhian showed Ennis is open to eat
he doesn’t possess the power to make Ennis pay
It sounds like he’ll chase unification at 147 pounds
but there is a chance he’ll move up to 154 pounds at some point
Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn even mentioned 160 pounds as a possibility down the road
Ennis says he will take some time to enjoy his win and new titles before making a decision
Here is a look at all of the results from the entire card
Main Event – Welterweight Unification Bout
Ford’s new nickname should be the “Punisher.” As he has gained more experience and settled into a new weight class at 130 pounds
He set the tone by hurting Mattice early in the first round and kept that same energy over 10 rounds
He scored a complete shutout—10 rounds to none
That’s impressive against a decent pro like Mattice
Giyasov scored an impressive fourth-round KO win over Ocampo on an emotional night
He dedicated the fight and all of his fights moving forward to her memory
stopping him in the first round with a body shot
though Sergio Mora tried hard to sell its effectiveness
Jones looked smooth while he was in the ring
and he got the job done in his second pro fight
Moses easily pounded his way through Pallette
Smalls looked huge for welterweight and vastly superior to Bascome—who doesn’t fight often and came into the fight with just two wins by KO
Smalls looks like a plus athlete with long arms and legit punching power
It’ll be interesting to see who Smalls is matched against next
Cardenas came in as the hot and undefeated prospect
offered a bit more opposition than most expected
He took this fight on 4-days’ notice and made a good account for himself
Cardenas turned up the heat through the fight and scored the stoppage win
Rodriguez improved to 7-0 with a lopsided fight
He was easily the faster and more technical fighter
There are times when one prospect is clearly miles ahead of another
Parker’s corner might have been as big of an opponent as Rodriguez
He screamed at the top of his lungs the entire fight
It’s tough to imagine how a young fighter could perform well in that environment—especially when he or she is already faced with a tough opponent
Parker’s corner did make one smart decision
They threw in the towel between the third and fourth rounds to save Parker from taking more punishment
The early portion of the stream had IBF super lightweight champion Richardson Hitchins handling color analysis
It’ll be interesting to see if DAZN continues to have him wear this hat during future fight cards

The welterweight division has seen some greats compete over the years
It's hard to rank all those great fighters in order as all of them have achieved tremendous things
but Jaron Ennis was recently put on the spot to do just that
'Boots' Ennis ranked Floyd Mayweather as the greatest with Sugar Ray Robinson and Sugar Rey Leonard completing his top three
The great Tommy Hearns concluded Ennnis' top five
'Hands of Stone' Roberto Duran was in the sixth spot in his list
Manny Pacquiao came in seventh and Terence Crawford followed in the eighth spot
Felix Trinidad (9th) and Oscar De La Hoya (10th) completed Ennis' all time great welterweight ranking list
Jaron Ennis is now 34-0-0 (30 KOs) and could soon make room for himself in that list

Jaron Ennis, the undefeated IBF champion, defended his title in a high-stakes match against Eimantas Stanionis
the WBA regular welterweight champion whose belt was also on the line
The highly anticipated matchup took place Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City
Stanionis' corner stopped the fight after the sixth round
which saw Ennis unload a furious flurry of punches
Ennis improved to 34-0 with the TKO victory (RTD)
Ennis managed to get Stanionis to go to the canvas with a flurry of punches in the sixth round
Ennis walked out alongside Philadelphia 76ers superstar Tyrese Maxey
ESPN: Ennis by decisionStaff writes: Ennis has great footwork and upper-body movement
you don't even realize he's doing it -- it comes naturally to him -- and that's why he catches you with those shots because you don't know where they are coming from."
CBS Sports: Jaron Ennis via TKOBrent Brookhouse writes: "The bigger question is whether Ennis can get a stoppage win and add emphasis to a statement victory
Neither man has suffered a professional loss
nor has either suffered a knockdown as a professional
Ennis wasn't particularly impressive in the Chukhadzhian rematch
ignoring his jab and lacking defensive responsibility
but he still won a clear decision and the performance feels more like an outlier than the start of a new trend."
Anatoly Pimentel writes: "I predict that Ennis’ more dynamic style could outpoint Stanionis’ fundamentally based style
which could earn him a unanimous decision nod from the judges
Ennis’ has more variety in combinations and could switch stances
presenting problems for Stanionis as the fight progresses
would be enough for him to outpunch Stanionis and neutralize his pressure-forward approach by attacking from the outside instead of letting Stanionis push him against the ropes."

Terence Crawford vs Jaron Ennis has once again emerged as a fight that boxing fans would love to see
Crawford became undisputed welterweight champion in 2023 before moving up a division
allowing Ennis to claim world honours at 147lbs and give him the chance to display what he is capable of
After a lacklustre performance against Karen Chukhadzhian in November, ‘Boots’ showed why he is rated highly by so mainly with a sixth round retirement win over Eimantas Stanionis in April
adding the WBA title to his IBF belt and reigniting talk of a fight with ‘Bud.’
One man who was seemingly impressed by that performance was former welterweight champion Shawn Porter
who has sparred Ennis in the past and also fought Crawford in November 2021
Having experienced what it is like to share the ring with both men, Porter has given his prediction on his The Porter Way Podcast for how the fight may go
if it happens this year it will go down in history as one of the classic fights that go with Martin Hagler vs Thomas Hearns
“It’s such a special fight because you’ve got two alpha males in the ring that are true alpha males
I was an alpha male until I got in the ring with that dude [Crawford].”
Porter was then asked which of the two hits harder
That dude [Ennis] hit me with a right hand in sparring
Any hopes of seeing Crawford vs. Ennis in the near future remain slim for now, due to ‘Bud’ preparing to step up to 168lbs to take on super-middleweight king Canelo Alvarez later this year.
Teofimo Lopez coasted to a unanimous decision win over Arnold Barboza Jr
to retain his WBO Junior Welterweight Belt
The Takeover followed up with a left to Barboza’s midsection to push him backwards
Teo continued the momentum in the second with a right over the top towards the head
Barboza reacted well with a left and a right hand in a better response
Teo switched things up again with a left hook on the counter
followed by a right uppercut in a strong third round
Barboza connected with a right hand that cut Teo near his left eye
Barboza had to find something out of the ordinary to turn the course of this fight
and Ring Magazine Welterweight Champion Jaron Ennis next
“I feel great. I feel reborn. And at 140,, I been at this weight for some time now. But we’ll talk about, me and my time, about going up, maybe. You know me, guys. I go after the tough challenges. … I’m Dora The Explorer, and I’m looking for Boots,” Lopez said
“It’s a shutout, I have never seen him look like this before, he has improved as a fighter. Fast hands. Listen, all these guys are going to have to show off tonight, and this is how to do it,” Mike Tyson stated

Injuries were a huge storyline for the Detroit Lions' defense in 2024
Unfortunately that was also the case for rookie cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr
Early injury troubles forced him to miss out on a big opportunity to play early in the season that just might have changed the course of his rookie season
During locker room clean out earlier this week
Rakestraw said he was set to start at the nickel cornerback spot Week 2 vs
Tampa Bay but suffered a hamstring injury in warm-ups
"A lot of people didn't know that," Rakestraw said of the plan for him to be a starter early in the season
speaks to the media about making the best of his future opportunities
Rakestraw missed a couple weeks with the injury and veteran Amik Robertson established himself in the slot and never relinquished the nickel cornerback role
Rakestraw ended up playing just 46 defensive snaps this season as he missed nine games total due to injury
"So now what I just got to do is be available," Rakestraw said
But you don't get to pick those situations
It was certainly a frustrating first season for Detroit's second-round pick
but Rakestraw is using it as fuel to come back stronger next season and be a big part of this secondary in 2025
"This just brings me back to my roots of everybody doubting me and not believing that a kid from West Dallas can do this," he said
"So I'm just appreciative that they gave me my fire back
The Lions used their first two picks on cornerback Terrion Arnold and Rakestraw as general manager Brad Holmes said his first and second-round picks were the top two cornerbacks on Detroit's draft board
Rakestraw missed most of the spring as he recovered from a sports hernia that required surgery and cut short his senior season at Missouri
He also dealt with an ankle injury in training camp
He started the season with a role on special teams but was going to get his chance to make an impact defensively Week 2 had he not pulled a hamstring in warm-ups
He ended up playing spot duty defensively totaling just eight percent of Detroit's defensive snaps on the season
allowing four receptions for 53 yards in the six times he was targeted in 23 coverage reps
The hamstring injury really nagged at him all season long and eventually landed him on injured reserve
HC Dan Campbell speaks on the season and what they have to do moving forward
Rakestraw could be in line for a bigger role next season in a Detroit secondary that could look different with cornerback Carlton Davis III set to be an unrestricted free agent
Robertson could move outside and that could leave Rakestraw competing for the nickel job
smiled every day and it just didn't go my way," Rakestraw said

headlining a night of boxing at Times Square
The World Boxing Association (WBA) has confirmed that the winner of the clash will claim its regular welterweight title
paving a clear path to a potential clash with Jaron Ennis
the clash comes after King Ry was suspended for a year after testing positive for ostarine
Garcia remains one of the sport's most well-known faces due to his social media presence
Aside from a year of inactivity, further fallout from the positive test saw Garcia's impressive win over Devin Haney stricken from his record
With Haney also stepping up to welterweight
it seems possible that a rematch between the pair will take place later this year – perhaps sooner
forcing Garcia to pick between potential glory or bragging rights
On top of the chance to earn a strap on Friday night
both fighters know that victory will set them up to face the WBA’s super champion – currently Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis
That is because the WBA have ordered Ennis to defend his belt against Shakhram Giyasovin a match has to take place within 120 days of Ennis's victory just over two weeks ago against Eimantas Stanionis
The victor of that bout has to face the winner of Garcia-Romero
Despite an impressive record and healthy reputation in the sport
Garcia is yet to claim a world title in any of the three divisions he has competed in
the 26-year-old is yet to contend for a world title inside the ring
Garcia was also handed a world-title shot when he arranged a fight with then-reigning WBC super-lightweight champion Devin Haney
King Ry missed the super-lightweight limit of 140 pounds
preventing Garcia from taking the belt off his former amateur rival
Garcia faces another boxer to have claimed a world title – albeit formerly
Beaten to the WBA lightweight title by Davis
Romero was given an opportunity to take the WBA super-lightweight belt from the waist of Alberto Puello
A suspension for Puello due to a positive test for performance-enhancing drugs saw the title stripped
with the WBA pitting Romero against Ismael Barroso for the vacant title in May 2023
Romero stopped his Venezuelan opponent in the ninth round
Aside from defeats for either Ryan Garcia or Jaron Ennis
a few variables may prevent the pair from meeting in the ring
Ennis has long been rumoured to leave the welterweight division behind and step up to 154 pounds
That would see Boots vacate his IBF and WBA belts at 147 pounds
However, after his unifying-victory over Eimantas Stanionis, Ennis remained coy about his future
having previously been outspoken about his desire to become undisputed in the lightweight division
Garcia may steer away from Ennis in order to face Devin Haney once more
During the build-up to their respective bouts on Friday’s card
the duo have taken verbal swipes at each other
highlighting that there is still unfinished business between the Dream and the King
With Turki Alalshikh claiming to have set up a rematch between Garcia and Haney for later this year
King Ry may put his world title bid on hold to put his old adversary in his place

A young NFL player usually takes their biggest leap in development and production from the first to second year in the league and the Detroit Lions are certainly hoping that will be the case for cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
Detroit's second-round pick in last year's NFL Draft
Rakestraw had an injury-riddled rookie season that saw him play in only eight games and 46 total snaps on defense
He played 95 special teams snaps across all four special teams units and showed promise there
HC Dan Campbell speaks to the media on how he is excited where they are at
but there is still work that needs to be done
the biggest jump you make of growth is between Year 1 and Year 2," Lions head coach Dan Campbell said at the NFL Annual Meetings this week
He had a couple of injuries that took him off the field (as a rookie)
which is unfortunate because he was going (in games) and helping us a bit on teams
Rakestraw was set to play a role on Detroit's defense in the nickel Week 2 vs
Tampa Bay but suffered a hamstring injury in warmups
He missed a couple weeks with the injury and that allowed Robertson to establish himself as a reliable slot player for the Lions
The hamstring injury nagged Rakestraw all season long and eventually landed him on injured reserve
"So now what I just got to do is be available," Rakestraw said in January after the season concluded
Campbell was clear this week when talking about the cornerback room for this upcoming season that Rakestraw can certainly earn a role if he proves himself and develops like the Lions think he can
"I would anticipate this guy takes another step up
You draft guys where you do and you sign guys according to what you think they're going to be for you
not because they don't think Rakestraw can be part of the equation in the secondary for Detroit next season
but because depth — something the Lions know all too well — is extremely important at every position
Lions Executive Vice President and General Manager Brad Holmes speaks to the media at the Annual League Meetings
and he wasn't healthy enough to provide us a little bit more clarity in terms of where he was gonna be
I didn't think it was going to be rational for us to depend on him," Holmes said this week when explaining some of the team's signings in free agency this offseason
and this is going to fuel him to be ready and compete
we're still excited about him but we're just adding depth."
Lions fans certainly know how important depth can be after all the injuries the defense suffered last season
The additions Holmes made in free agency means the Lions are expected to have some good competition at cornerback
It will be interesting to see how Rakestraw can fit into the mix on defense and special teams during the offseason training program and into training camp
He had a good camp last year and Holmes drafted him 61st overall for a reason
