National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE-IAM) President Randy Erwin addressed over 400 attendees at the 2025 IAM Legislative Conference
one of the strongest turnouts in recent history
This year’s event focused on defending workers’ rights
especially employees in the federal sector
President Erwin began his remarks with recognizing IAM leadership for their ardent support of NFFE and federal workers, which was exemplified this week by a rally at Union Station in Washington
“Federal employees across the board are doing incredible work for the American people,” Erwin said
safe air travel – essential services for the American people
and we need to support them – you guys are
President Erwin also slammed the Trump Administration for attacking federal workers and cutting public services in order to help offset tax cuts for the wealthy
“The Trump Administration is destroying public services in this country,” continued Erwin
“They claim to be making government more efficient – that is a complete joke
As they are trying to make all these unnecessary cuts of essential services
they are also trying to push through a 4.5 trillion dollar tax cut that almost exclusively benefits only the filthy rich
The annual cost of that is bigger than the entire federal payroll put together
They are trying to pay for a billionaires’ tax cut on the backs of hard working
The most significant issue for NFFE-IAM members this year in meeting with lawmakers on Capitol Hill was legislation to negate President Trump’s executive order stripping over one million federal workers of their Constitutional right to a form and join union
Write to your representatives today to tell them to cosponsor the bipartisan Protect America’s Workforce Act (H.R
“It’s a direct assault on working people and it’s despicable
but they can pull all the crap they want – they can sign executive orders
they can mess with us – but we are not going anywhere
NFFE has been around 107 years and we’re resilient
Our people are more fired up about being in a union than they ever have
and the work that we have to do to protect the federal workforce has never been so important.”
A 2-year-old child is safe after good Samaritans discovered her walking alone alongside Denim Drive in Erwin Wednesday morning
Erwin Police Chief Jonathan Johnson said the toddler had wandered away from her home before 6 a.m
and there’s a lot of mean people in the world,” Johnson said
A couple spotted the child as they were driving and brought her to the police department
Erwin police and a group of citizens then went door to door for nearly four hours in hopes of locating her parents
The Harnett County Department of Social Services eventually tracked down the parents’ numbers and reunited the child with her father
“I’m just thankful she’s alright,” said the child’s father
“Whoever found her and took her to the police
I truly appreciate that from the bottom of my heart.”
McLean said the toddler had slipped out the back door unnoticed after he fell asleep following a night shift
Police are investigating how she managed to get out
Police charged McLean with misdemeanor child abuse
but hopefully this will be a learning experience for them and other parents.”
WRAL covered a similar situation in April when a toddler got around a daycare gate in Pikeville
They were later found by a Hardee’s worker on a road down the street
“[Toddlers are] smart and they can sneak out in a short amount of time and be gone,” Johnson said
after what seemed like a quick doze from a long night of work turned into a terrifying wake-up call
“I would just say be careful because the unexpected can happen,” he said
“Nobody should have to go through something like that.”
Three Questions About The Vietnam War with Veteran Sal Soto
As Midtown restaurant Sagche’s Coffee House nears its seven-year anniversary
Guatemala-native and 28-year Santa Fe resident Erwin Sagche remains committed to sharing the flavors of his country
And though Guatemalan culinary offerings are often overshadowed by Mexico’s
Sagche’s home carries distinct culinary traditions that date back thousands of years
it’s safe to say Sagche’s has built a cult following with locals who swear by its breakfast
We sat down with Sagche to hear more about Guatemalan cuisine
plans for the upcoming anniversary and how Sagche’s Coffee House is so much more than just a coffee shop
This interview has been edited for clarity and concision
How would you describe Guatemalan cuisine to someone who has never tried it before
which is the seed of the achiote tree ground into a powder using a big stone mortar and pestle
This spice gives dishes a deep red color and unique flavor
but we love to use different spices and heirloom herbs for flavor
It also has a lot to do with using fresh ingredients and the fertile land
The climate zones in Guatemala range from tropical to highlands
so we have a diverse variety of fruits and vegetables like avocados
The fertile land really makes a big difference in the quality of the food
Another important part of Guatemalan cuisine is our tamales
which is a traditional holiday food—usually on Christmas or Holy Week
Tamales represent a celebration of Guatemalan culture and our traditions
distinct flavors and fresh ingredients that make Guatemalan dishes what they are
What would you say is the one dish that best represents Guatemala
Depending on which region of Guatemala you’re in
It’s a dish that goes back to the pre-Columbian Maya times
Chiles are an important staple ingredient in Maya cuisine and pepián incorporates at least two dried chiles: guajillo and pasilla
spices and we roast everything to give it that deep flavor and blend it into a sauce
and traditionally it's served with tamalitos (mini tamales)
but here it’s served with rice mixed with vegetables and our handmade tortillas
I want to start working with farmers here in town with chickens and roosters
The idea is to eventually use local chicken to make the classic homemade-tasting pepián
she would always work with her mom where she learned all the tricks and the spices they put in pepián
I'm so glad she's with us today to share those traditions with Santa Fe
How does it feel to be celebrating seven years of business and do you have plans to celebrate
Being in business for seven years is something I am so grateful for
It’s our loyal customers and the hardworking staff who have made us successful
We're going to pass out 100 invitations to customers on a first-come-first served kind of deal
asking them to come and celebrate with us on May 23
I worked at Tomasita’s for 22 years as a server
I didn't realize everything that is involved in running a restaurant
but it’s been worth it when you see customers enjoying our food
but I want to keep reaching to all corners of New Mexico
The main goal is to share Guatemalan culture and to keep our traditions and heritage alive by sharing our food

The Italianate-style mansion—with its soaring ceilings
and stately proportions—was built in 1859 by the architect Henry Howard
best known for shaping the antebellum aesthetic of New Orleans through his opulent town houses and plantation homes
the AD PRO Directory designer was both thrilled and daunted
the pull of New Orleans’s deep-rooted charm was what drew her back to her home state after many years living in California
“Everything there just became very formulaic for me,” she explains of her earlier career in the Golden State
“When we moved to New Orleans after having children
it really opened up so much more.” Reimagining the Garden District gem was simply the icing on the cake
Among the few decorative elements left in situ from the previous owners was this hand-painted mural of a Louisiana swamp by the artist AM CREATIVE FINISHES
“Our main inspiration was those Parisian Haussmann-style apartments that maintain the original architecture while blending in modern furniture and kitchens,” Erwin says
There were a few elements kept in situ from the previous design
including a moody hand-painted mural of a Louisiana swamp
“We approached this project with deep respect for the home’s architectural legacy,” adds Amy Petersen
who served as Lee Ledbetter & Associates’ project manager for the renovation
“The goal was never to modernize for the sake of change
but to create a home that supports the rhythm of daily life while allowing the original craftsmanship and character to shine through
and making every intervention feel like it had always belonged.”
The architecture of the house was the guiding influence for everyone involved
“The owners are a fun couple with four young children
so we had to make it modern while blending it with the existing [shell],” explains the designer
that meant introducing sculptural furnishing with subtle curves and abstract shapes—a 1950s boomerang-style sofa upholstered in bouclé
an Atelier Fevrier rug that resembles shattered ceramics
a pair of wedge-like Achille armchairs by Pool Studio—and painting the walls and ceiling a warm
almond-toned shade of cream as a way of softening the room’s ornate details and gargantuan scale
separated from the living room by a series of arches held aloft by Corinthian columns
the space revolves around a 12-foot custom Egg Collective dining table
and a Lindsey Adelman Branching Disc chandelier
“Having to work with these big spaces meant finding the right proportions,” Erwin explains
“The volume of each room is so massive that we had to be specific about each piece we put in the room.”
A vintage Italian mirror and brass-toned hardware enhance the jewel-box effect
balancing the home’s natural grandeur with more intimate spaces was equally as important
so they wanted a home that could host everything from a black-tie event to Sunday fundays
when they have a bunch of families over,” Erwin says
where a vintage Willy Rizzo chrome and wood bar and matching games table evoke the feeling of 1970s glamour
it remains very much a family house at heart
Lee Ledbetter & Associates designed the kitchen and Erwin selected a functional
Bulthaup-designed system with fuss-free Cosentino countertops and a sun-drenched breakfast nook where they can all sit
occupying a piece of history doesn’t necessarily mean living in a museum
they didn’t want a ‘don’t touch’ house,” she adds
“The furniture had to be usable and family-friendly—somewhere the kids could run around and make a mess.”
The Garden District mansion was built in 1859 by the architect Henry Howard
inject bold contrast into the light-filled room
Erwin specified Farrow & Ball’s earthy Green Smoke wall paint for the boy’s room
“We made sure the garden furniture was easily moveable, so you can set up a dining table and have an outdoor dinner party,” says Erwin, who sourced a set of Kettal Cala Club Armchairs for the tree-filled backyard.

Print Insights The arrest of a Wisconsin judge in her chambers on Friday is just the latest and most dramatic effort by the Trump administration to intimidate the judiciary
It follows the playbook of other countries where those seeking authoritarian power have sought to remove judges and lessen their authority
President Trump and those around him know that at this point the only real check on his actions will come from the courts. Neither Congress nor members of his administration have shown any proclivity for ensuring compliance with the law. Trump posted his disdain on X and his platform Truth Social: “He who saves his Country does not violate any Law.”
Dozens of federal judges have issued temporary restraining orders and preliminary injunctions halting unconstitutional and illegal Trump actions since his inauguration on Jan
The president’s response has been to attack judges in as brazen a manner as he’s broken the law
District Court Judge James Boasberg issued a temporary restraining order banning flights taking supposed gang members to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador
Trump called him a “radical left lunatic of a judge
a troublemaker and agitator” who should be impeached
Republicans know, of course, that their attempts will fail. Even if the House passes the impeachment resolutions, there is no way that two-thirds of the Senate would vote to remove the judges from office. But that misses the point of the attacks: They send a message that the Trump administration will go after those on the bench who block his policies and a message to the country that the courts cannot stop him.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has joined in the bullying. Speaking of Congress, he said, “We do have the authority over the federal courts, as you know. We can eliminate an entire district court. We have power of funding over the courts and all these other things.” No one believes Congress is about to eliminate federal courts, but Johnson wants to intimidate and discredit them.
The FBI’s arrest of Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan in her courtroom, for allegedly trying to help an undocumented immigrant avoid arrest after he appeared in court, is the most blatant scare tactic yet. The sight of federal officials putting a judge in handcuffs is undeniably chilling.
Not surprisingly, this creates a conflict between the federal government and other levels of government, including, allegedly, the Wisconsin judge. The administration could have verbally condemned the judge or had a grand jury indict her, which itself would have been outrageous. Public safety was in no way served by handcuffing Dugan at the courthouse. That was done entirely for the media attention.
The administration’s attack on the judiciary, taken together with its extortionate executive-order demands of law firms, represents a challenge to the rule of law unlike anything before in U.S. history. But what he and his allies are doing is not unfamiliar.
I used to begin my constitutional law classes by having students read the U.S. Constitution and the not-dissimilar Stalin-era Soviet Constitution. They were always surprised by the far more elaborate statement of rights in the Russian document compared with America’s. I also had them read a description of Stalin’s killings and the gulags.
Why, I asked, did one country become a police state when the other did not? The answer, I suggested, was that in the Soviet Union no court could or would invalidate the government’s actions. Words on paper are meaningless if they are not enforceable.
The Trump administration is pushing past the limits of executive power to weaken and discredit the only guardrail left against his authoritarianism — lawyers, judges and courts. Those of all political parties and ideologies must speak up loudly and clearly: These attacks are wrong and must stop. Our constitutional democracy depends on an independent judiciary that enforces the law against all who violate it.

writer-director Jon Erwin has aspired to put what he considers the “ultimate” Hero’s Journey story on screen
Erwin’s decades-long filmmaking career has paved the way for his latest project: “The House of David,” a biblical TV series about King David of The Old Testament
which premiered on Amazon Prime Video on Friday
When Erwin was 16 years old he traveled to Israel with his father
A visit to King David’s tomb in Jerusalem sparked his lifelong passion for filmmaking and he set a goal to adapt David’s story for the screen
“Every other project led to this one,” Erwin said
“All these other films that I’ve had the privilege to be involved in
were about trying to get good enough at this filmmaking thing to tell this epic story.”
“It’s kind of the story I’ve always wanted to tell ..
so I was just trying to wait patiently and develop enough skill to tell the story and really do it justice.”
directed and produced “Jesus Revolution” and “American Underdog.” Most recently
he produced “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” and “The Unbreakable Boy.”
Erwin is also a co-founder of The Wonder Project
a production company specializing in faith-based and inspirational entertainment
Many of Erwin’s previous projects, such as “The Unbreakable Boy," are based on true events
But this is his first attempt at putting a biblical story on screen
He said it has been a “fun process” bringing “justice” to these biblical stories
“The good news is the Bible itself is really entertaining
“So you want to be faithful to the to the story
and to the themes of the story and to the deeper meaning of the story ..
The words of David in the Psalms — there’s a reason why they’re still with us 3,000 years later."
Cast members of “The House of David” — including Stephan Lang
Aylet Zurer and Ali Sulima — said they prepared for their roles by reading the bible
very challenging character to play,” Stephan Lang (“Avatar,” “Don’t Breathe”)
“That requires really going to the source material
and kind of really getting as much as one possibly can through that.”
Lang said in addition to reading the bible
he studied a slew of commentary on Samuel and consulted with individuals who are experts on the ancient figure
you take the leap of faith and just play it,” Lang said
took a similar approach to Lang in developing his character
“The way I approached David was like any other character study that that I do ..
but also the added aspect was scripture and finding anything that I could to learn about the life of David and what kind of man he was,” Iskander said
He said reading the book of Psalms was “gold” and “really helped me infer the different things that he would do that what character he had.”
The first three episodes of “The House of David” premiered on Prime on Friday
and will be followed by the release of single new episodes weekly
stepping beyond your fear to something you deeply believe in,” Erwin said
“There’s a lot of themes that are deeply resonant and and deeply meaningful to me
and I hope they are the people that watch as well.”

Gianchandani has had an illustrious career at NSF and accomplished enough in his mere decade and change in government to earn the Distinguished Presidential Rank Award in 2021
Ever since his time at the University of Virginia in the 2000s—which culminated in a PhD in mechanical engineering—Gianchandani has been on the fast track to success
He burst onto the professional scene and was the first director of the Computing Community Consortium
where he was already extremely innovation-minded
The organization advises the computing research field on where to focus its efforts
He joined NSF in 2012 as deputy director of its division of computer and network systems
before becoming deputy assistant director for computer and information science and engineering a few years later
Gianchandani really cut his teeth at NSF helping to assemble and activate programs like Smart and Connected Communities
the National Artificial Intelligence Research Institutes and
He also served a pair of terms as acting assistant director of the Computer and Information Science and Engineering directorate—dubbed NSF CISE—wherein he was tasked with negotiating and administering a $1 billion yearly budget
Perhaps Gianchandani’s greatest claim to flame thus far has been his involvement in standing up the Technology, Innovation and Partnerships Directorate
“The end goal of this effort,” Gianchandani said at a conference
“is to really be able to advance key technologies to be able to address some of our pressing societal and geostrategic challenges
Different than other research and development-focused agencies like the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency or the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Agency
TIP is meant to create opportunities for citizens across the country to conduct meaningful technological work in fields ranging from artificial intelligence
TIP is a function of the Regional Engines program and is prompting that endeavor to “invest per engine $160 million over 10 years,” per Gianchandani
“That is an order magnitude greater than the largest research grant than what the NSF has historically funded in research.”

Erwin Jackson, a Tallahassee landlord known for helping the feds during corruption investigations
has landed in federal court himself over his refusal to allow a former tenant to have an “emotional support” dog in her apartment
Department of Justice filed the lawsuit last month against Jackson and two of his companies alleging they violated the civil rights of a Florida State University graduate student who has a history of depression
anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder
He’s also hopeful that the case will be dropped altogether now that President Donald Trump is back in the White House and the DOJ is under the management of new Attorney General Pam Bondi
The lawsuit was filed Jan. 10, in the final days of the Biden administration, by Washington-based attorneys in DOJ's Civil Rights Division. After Trump took office, DOJ put a freeze on civil rights litigation and ordered the Civil Rights Division not to file any more complaints or court papers “until further notice.”
the woman moved into the Jackson-owned Greenbriar Garden Homes in August 2022
She signed a lease that included a “no pets” policy that the DOJ said didn’t have an exemption for service or assistance animals
her mental health deteriorated significantly,” the complaint says
“(She) had difficulties adjusting to the pressures of graduate school and a new city where she had no established support network
which she thought would be more effective than medicine and without side effects
She got in touch with a mental health counselor based in Arkansas and licensed in Florida
“(She) believed that a dog would assist her in dealing with her emotions in her home because she previously lived with animals at her childhood home,” the complaint says
Jackson wrote back saying that her request for an emotional service animal had been denied
he could deny a tenant’s request for a service animal if it put an undue burden on his business
posed a threat to the health and safety of people or damaged his property
“Allowing your dog would constitute an undue financial burden and completely alter our business practices
operating procedures and distinction in the market
causing a significant loss of revenue,” Jackson wrote
it would force our company to lay off employees who have been diligently and loyally working for over 10 years and lose contractors who have been with us for over 20 years.”
Jackson said she had seven days to remove the dog ― though she hadn't actually adopted one ― or face eviction
DOJ added that Jackson’s rental properties had denied similar requests before from other tenants
The woman ended up leaving her apartment several months before her lease expired
She moved in with roommates who had a dog and lived in an apartment that allowed pets
her roommates procured a cat and a rabbit,” the DOJ complaint says
“(She) has also spent time with these animals; and
The woman filed a discrimination complaint against Jackson in January 2023 with the Department of Housing and Urban Development
which completed an investigation and “attempted reconciliation without success,” the lawsuit says
Jackson elected to have the claims resolved in court
prompting DOJ’s Civil Rights Division to commence civil action against him
The DOJ alleged he violated the Fair Housing Act by discriminating against someone based on their disability and failing to make reasonable accommodations
The government is seeking a court declaration that he and his rental businesses violated the FHA
an order ensuring future compliance and monetary damages for the former tenant
Jackson told the Democrat in an interview that he had been attacked at least a dozen times over the years by “untrained animals” and that an employee in Pensacola had been attacked twice
He said he allows certain pets he deems harmless
But he said his apartments stand out in the marketplace because they don't otherwise allow animals
“I’m successful because we have a vicious animal-free (property)
they won’t have to worry about where they walk
they won’t have to worry about the dogs (defecating) in the front yard
Jackson also said that students have learned to exploit the system by going online and paying $150 or $200 to certify their pets as emotional support animals
with one letter for landlords and another for airlines
one of his office employees got one such certificate for a fictitious cat named “Fluff Nuts.”
“It’s just a horrendous scam,” said Jackson, who for years spoke out about alleged City Hall chicanery at City Commission meetings
The case was filed in the Northern District of Florida
