Ala (WDHN) — A Eufaula man accused of helping a Georgia doctor smuggle in thousands of illegal taxidermy birds and eggs into the U.S
A statement from the Department of Justice revealed Toney Jones
was sentenced to six months’ probation after pleading guilty to an Endangered Species Act charge
was sentenced to serve three years of probation and pay a $900,000 fine
He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to smuggle wildlife and ESA violations
amassed a collection of 1,401 taxidermy bird mounts and 2,594 eggs
“This included incredibly rare specimens like three eggs of the Nordmann’s Greenshank
an Asian shorebird with only 900 to 1,600 remaining birds in the wild; no North American museum has any Nordmann Greenshank eggs in their collection,” the DOJ said in its statement
The birds and eggs were imported without the required declarations and permits between 2016 and 2020
Previously unsealed indictments for Jones and Dr
Waldrop claim that the two used online sites like eBay and Etsy to buy the hundreds of taxidermized bird mounts and thousands of live eggs from countries including Germany
DOJ attorneys say that federal inspectors intercepted several packages at John F
who worked on the doctor’s Georgia farm
Jones was also accused of depositing around $525,000 in a bank account used by Waldrop to pay for the imports and hide his involvement
“Waldrop’s gigantic and rare bird collection was bolstered in part by illegal imports
where he and his enlisted co-conspirators intentionally avoided permit and declaration requirements,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Adam Gustafson of the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD)
“We applaud the efforts of the various federal and state law enforcement entities in investigating and prosecuting this case.”
Attorneys previously said Waldrop collected protected avian species such as canary
USFWS National Fish and Wildlife Forensics Lab said tat after examining Waldrop’s forfeited collection
it was determined to be the “largest seizure of bird mounts in their 37-year history.”
“The scale of this investigation underscores the critical importance of protecting our natural resources,” said Assistant Director Douglas Ault of U.S
Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Office of Law Enforcement
“Waldrop’s collection included thousands of bird specimens and eggs
many of which are among the rarest in the world
This is one of the largest bird trafficking cases in history
and the commercialization of species protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act
and CITES highlights the conservation impact of Waldrop’s crimes
Fish and Wildlife Service Office of Law Enforcement are unwavering in our commitment to safeguarding wildlife for future generations
We will remain vigilant and will continue to hold accountable those who exploit our shared natural resources for personal gain.”

was created when a dam was constructed on the Canadian River
which enters Oklahoma on its western border and snakes through the state until connecting with the Arkansas River in eastern Oklahoma
Congress approved building a dam on the Canadian River at a location near the city of Eufaula and 27 miles upstream from where the river flows into the Arkansas River
The dam was built for the purposes of flood control

A crowd of about 50,000 attended the ceremony
overwhelmingly pleased with Johnson's speech
as reported in The Daily Oklahoman on Sept
President Johnson praised Oklahoma's $120 million Eufaula dam and reservoir Friday as a project which in years to come will mean "a stronger Oklahoma
a more prosperous Oklahoma and a greater Oklahoma." Then he drew a tumultuous ovation from an estimated 50,000 listeners as he pledged that the Arkansas River navigation program "will continue on schedule." ..
Turning in the direction of the 102,500-acre Eufaula Reservoir stretching almost as far as the eye could see from the speaker's platform
the president waved his arm and said: "That's what you dreamed
Now aren't you proud of the people of Oklahoma
it was the first lady who had received the first burst of cheers
"Lady Bird" Johnson had accompanied her husband to the dedication and took a few moments to speak to Oklahomans:
water and soil conservation — and here I am seeing one of the dreams."
"This is the happiest part of my husband's work
Thank you for letting share this wonderful day with you," she said

the Charles Henderson Trojans (18-6) throttled the Eufaula Tigers (7-13) by a score of 63-39 in the Class 5A Subregional to advance to the Regional Round of the State Tournament next week
The two sides slugged it out early and after a Mel Rodgers dunk
the Trojans led 10-6 with 1:50 left in the opening period
Eufaula then drilled a three with 1:20 left to cut the lead to 10-9
Charles Henderson proceeded to go on a 6-0 run to finish out the first quarter
Tyler Cross knocking down a jumper with just 10 seconds left to cap it off
That run continued in the second quarter as Jydarien Burney stole an inbounds pass
and then slammed it down to put the Trojans up 19-10 with 7:34 left in the half
Charles Henderson’s run extended to 23-1 over a seven minute stretch between the first and second quarters
Eufaula did not score its first points of the second quarter until the 2:37 mark
the Trojans ended the period on a 7-0 run to take a 43-16 lead into halftime
The Trojans outscored Eufaula 27-6 in the second period
A couple of CHHS players got banged up late in the second quarter and Eufaula managed to take advantage of that by chipping away at the lead and outscoring the Trojans 13-4 in the third to cut the lead to 47-29 going into the final period
was more CHHS dominance as the Trojans outscored the Tigers 16-10 to secure the victory
“We had a good first half,” CHHS Coach Tim Fayson said with a smile
“The second half got a little sticky but overall
we try to hold teams under 40 points and we achieved that goal.”
Burney earned a double-double in the win for the Trojans with 12 points
while Tyler Cross scored 13 points and dished four assists
Kameron Christian scored 11 points and earned two steals and two assists

CLAY COUNTY, Ga. (WDHN) — A Georgia man lost his life after a boating incident on Lake Eufaula ended in tragedy
law enforcement was notified of a group of distressed duck hunters near the island off of Thomas Mill Creek in Abbeville on Lake Eufaula
Deputies say the initial call came in that their boat had drifted away from the island and one of the hunters attempted to swim to get the boat
The callers believed the hunter had made it in the boat
A rescue boat was sent out and was able to locate the missing boat but crews say the hunter wasn’t in it
The boat was returned to the stranded hunters on the island and officials say they then began to search the area where the hunter was last seen
deputies located what they believed to be the missing hunter in nearly 20 feet of water approximately 100 yards from the bank of the island
A dive unit was called in and they recovered the body
I would like to express my thanks to the timely response by so many agencies to help us this morning,” Henry County Sheriff Eric Blankenship said in a statement
The missing hunter is a 22-year-old from Griffin
His identity has not been released at this time
Please keep this family and his friends in your thoughts and prayers as they cope with this difficult situation,” Blankenship said
The incident occurred over the Alabama-Georgia line on Lake Eufaula
so the case has been handed over to the Georga Department of Natural Resources which is now investigating

Texas’ Paul Browning wins the Mercury B.A.S.S
Nation Qualifier at Lake Eufaula presented by Lowrance in Eufaula
After a slow Day 1 yielded only two keepers for 7-13
The second round saw him make considerable headway
and although he fell one fish short of his five-bass limit
Browning’s 15-10 propelled him into seventh place
“It started off slow today and I lost two fish pretty quick,” Browning said
but then I caught a 7-4 that clued me in on a new stretch.”
Fishing the mid-lake region near the Belle Star Marina
Browning targeted spawning fish in buckbrush in 6 inches to 4 feet of water
He was flipping a 4-inch Big Bite Baits Fighting Frog in the tilapia color
rigged on a 4/0 Owner Jungle flipping hook with a 1/2-ounce Kovert Tungsten weight
“The water was really clean; it had a brownish tint
so the light breeze helped,” Browning said
“My mapping showed a deeper area in the middle
so I knew that would give the fish a place to go during the cooler nights.”
Browning realized he started his morning by fishing too fast
The manner in which he caught his big fish caused him to alter his pace
and that helped him complete his winning limit
and I think that’s what did it for me,” Browning said
“I was flipping into the brush and slowly dragging the bait out
Maybe this will help me get the wheels back on the wagon.”
placed 13th on Day 1 with two bass that weighed 10-10
he added the event’s biggest limit — 19-13 — and moved into the lead
His Day 3 catch of four fish for 9-5 gave him a second-place tournament total of 39-12
who attributed his big Day 2 comeback to more favorable wind conditions
returned to his main area in the mid- to south-lake region
He caught his fish on a 3/8-ounce white/chartreuse spinnerbait with double Colorado blades
“You gotta keep perspective when you’re fishing,” Leybass said
“It was a tough practice; the fish were not set up right
They were in and out; the water level (was fluctuating)
“I was blessed for the day I had yesterday
but it’s been a good event and it exceeded my expectations.”
Day 1 leader Kelley Hudson finished third with 39-2
Hudson did most of his work in the backs of small creeks where he targeted shallow staging areas
He caught most of his fish on a Texas-rigged green pumpkin Zoom Brush Hog with the tail dipped in chartreuse
He caught his biggest final-round fish on a spinnerbait
“I had a great week and I’m proud of the way I fished,” Hudson said
so to come to a 200,000-acre lake and have a chance to win is absolutely fantastic.”
Both anglers caught bass weighing 7-4 and split the $500 prize
won the non-boater division with a three-day total of 29-13
Oliver turned in daily three-fish limits of 5-10
