overlooking the green rolling hills of the Tamarack Country Club stretching across 180 acres of backcountry Greenwich
the 235 nature enthusiasts gathered for the 2025 Audubon Connecticut Environmental Leadership Awards Benefit
Being honored was Awardee Eunice Burnett of Greenwich for her impactful work in conservation and environmental community building
But before Burnett’s notable acceptance talk were remarks by Dr
and introduced as the first female to hold that office since Audubon’s founding in 1905
Gray had just arrived from Washington attending the U.S
“to be here tonight in a room full of people who have the same passion that I do for birds and for nature and for the future that we’re all building together.”
Gray thanked Greenwich Audubon board chair Kim Gregory “for bringing together this community in honor of Eunice Burnett and her remarkable contributions.” More thanks went to Gregory and to Mike Burger
vice president and executive director of Audubon Connecticut and New York “for growing the Audubon flock.” Gray cited the “action in Greenwich at the Audubon Center
We’re restoring 22 acres of early successional habitat and we’re doing that by planting pollinator gardens
by revitalizing trails and by expanding forest edges that are supporting really important bird and pollinator habitat.”
“is our guiding star: bending the bird curve – halting and ultimately reversing the decline of birds across the Americas
They are symbols of our connection to the natural world
and sentinels of its health.” Thus “When birds are doing well
the planet’s thriving and when birds are in decline
we’ve got some serious challenges to tackle and work to do
that’s why the work that we do not only protects birds
it strengthens communities such as this one that’s in the room tonight
It helps us all build resilience and it improves the quality of habitat
Awardee Eunice Burnett was introduced by Burger as “epitomizing community building and action.” “When Eunice sees something that needs to be done
she steps up and does it…Just recently she had an idea to prepare and deliver bird-centric welcome boxes to families who are new to the area to welcome them to Greenwich and introduce them to the Greenwich Audubon Center
who serves on the board of Audubon Connecticut/ Audubon New York
“I’m just an average person who has a deep appreciation for nature and maybe that’s why I’m a good person to talk to all of you tonight.” Her formative influences followed
She began her work in her twenties as an equity research analyst
“As I researched the chemical industry,” she told
“I became aware of what some companies like Monsanto were doing to our environment in food supply…When I had children
trans fats in everything…I stopped feeding my Kentucky group blue grass sod nitrogen fertilizer to prevent algae growth in our local freshwater ponds
Our landscapers were not happy…I was rewarded with the sighting of a beautiful Luna moth on my lawn
I swear its green wings flapped me a little thank you for its natural playground.”
Taking her three kids skiing where she had skied in her youth on “the highest mountain” of Germany
we did not see a giant snow-capped mountain
The tiniest dirtiest patch of snow was the only remnant of the once magnificent glacier
I had put these three people on the planet
I owed it to them to make sure that the planet was still functioning when they were my age.”
Burnett then “sought out like-minded people who supported environmental organizations with their time
and treasure.” She was inspired to do the same
“I chair Green Our Children to benefit research at Mount Sinai’s Children Environmental Health Center
I chair the environmental education committee at the Junior League where it’s monitored by Susie Baker…who has received Audubon’s Environmental Lifetime Achievement Award and is an overall total force in conservation
Burnett “became part of a great environmental committee at Stanwich School.” She joined GRAB – the Greenwich Recycling Advisory Board
She worked with the Environmental Task Force and Greening of Greenwich
“both town initiatives headed by Lin Lavery
Burnett then became a board member of Audubon Connecticut
I joined the board to help our state start its Audubon and Home Initiative
which many of you know today as Bird Friendly Communities
Its goal is to teach people the best practices to develop their properties into healthy habitats for humans
“how to be a better steward of the natural world through the interconnectedness of the ecosystem
Conservation with a bird focus has a positive
including humans.” To spotlight that interconnectedness
“All parts of nature belong to one head as curls of a maiden’s hair.”
she has served on the board of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) or TNC
“TNC and Audubon often collaborate to achieve important conservation objectives
environmental organizations are now taking a page from nature’s playbook
mirroring the ecological interconnectedness that exists in nature
They have realized that they belong to one head as the curls of a maiden’s hair.”
“We can all agree that these bird songs are beautiful and moving and their absence would be tragic
but diversity of ideas and solutions AND biodiversity are critical to our survival – humans as well as birds.” But “Let us agree that birds are worth saving for our future generations.”
Burnett would leave us with another Thoreau quote: “As I love nature

Eunice Kennedy Shriver improved the lives of millions of people around the world
In 1961, Eunice started a summer camp for children with intellectual disabilities on the lawn of her Maryland estate. One year later, she decided that the Kennedy family should publicly acknowledge Rosemary’s condition for the first time, leading Eunice to write an essay in the Saturday Evening Post
Though the wording of this article is now outdated
the article was an important contribution to disability literature
She addressed the prejudices of the general public surrounding people with intellectual disabilities and urged funding for medical research
[intellectual disabilities] can happen in any family
It has happened in the families of the poor and rich

PORTO ALEGRE — On the set of I’m Still Here (2024), the acclaimed Brazilian film by Walter Salles Jr., supporting actress Angela Ribeiro was approached by a woman with red hair and thin-rimmed glasses
“I came to meet my namesake,” the visitor joked in a light Portuguese accent
The presence of Manuela Carneiro da Cunha
a distinguished Luso-Brazilian scholar specializing in Brazil’s Indigenous peoples
moved the actress portraying her on the big screen
and I was able to express my profound admiration.”
Carneiro da Cunha is a secondary character in the critically acclaimed film I’m Still Here, which is nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Picture
Best International Picture and Best Actress
The movie focuses on the personal and political story of its protagonist
lawyer Eunice Paiva (1929–2018) whose husband
was kidnapped and killed by agents of Brazil’s military dictatorship in 1971
The relationship between Eunice Paiva (played by Fernanda Torres) and Carneiro da Cunha is briefly touched upon in the film
but it encapsulates a crucial aspect of Paiva’s career: her influence in the Indigenous rights and environmental movement
Although I’m Still Here does not delve deeply into Indigenous issues
Indigenous leaders have seen the film’s international success as a tribute to a champion of their cause
“It’s impossible to talk about the Indigenous movement during the dictatorship without mentioning Eunice Paiva,” summarizes Ailton Krenak
“You can’t discuss today’s Indigenous movement without her,” adds Eliesio Marubo
a Marubo Indigenous lawyer and legal adviser for the Union of Indigenous Peoples of the Javari Valley
Brazil’s Minister of Indigenous Peoples Sonia Guajajara acknowledged Paiva’s legacy
after the film’s lead actress won her most significant award to date
Guajajara wrote on social media: “Fernanda Torres won the Golden Globe for brilliantly portraying Eunice Paiva
a woman who deserves to be remembered for her fight for rights — not just for her family but for those most in need
Eunice stood with Indigenous peoples in their fight for land demarcation.”
Paiva’s path to legal advocacy was unexpected
She led a quiet life as a middle-class homemaker until her husband was killed and the military regime denied her rights as a widow and mother of five
she enrolled in law school in 1972 at the age of 41 and graduated five years later
few Indigenous people had the opportunity to attend or complete a university education
The defense of Indigenous rights fell to human rights lawyers,” says Marubo
Paiva’s motivation to defend Indigenous rights as a non-Indigenous person is difficult to pinpoint
She says Indigenous activism is deeply tied to resistance against the violence of Brazil’s development model — a model that often ignores both Indigenous peoples and the environment
“Even the most progressive economists took a long time to realize how large-scale energy projects
impact Indigenous lands and the environment,” Mindlin tells Mongabay
It became one of the defining causes of her life.”
Mindlin’s ties to Paiva go back to her teens. Her uncle, prominent architect Henrique Mindlin, was the brother-in-law of Baby Bocayuva, a close friend of the couple and himself a former representative proscribed by the military dictatorship. Bocayuva is portrayed in I’m Still Here by actor Dan Stulbach
The two women became closer after Mindlin left a successful career as an economist and university professor to become an anthropologist
Her mentor in this transition was the renowned sociologist and ethnologist Carmen Junqueira
who worked alongside Paiva at the Pro-Indian Commission of São Paulo
“I met Ailton Krenak at Eunice’s house,” Mindlin recalls
notes that his mother’s dedication to Indigenous law emerged after an initially promising career in family and civil law
thanks to support from friends and relatives
she allowed herself to focus on a field that wasn’t financially lucrative but that she inexplicably fell in love with: Indigenous law
She began representing Indigenous nations whose demarcated lands were being violated,” he writes
In 1985, Paiva co-authored The State Against the Indians
published by the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo’s Graduate Program in Social Sciences
The book highlights the connections between economic growth
political regimes and Indigenous rights violations in Brazil
One example is the Tucuruí Dam project on the Tocantins River in the Amazon Basin, which flooded lands inhabited by the Parakanã people
the Parakanã found themselves deprived of fishing
as nearby streams were not rich in fish,” the authors warn
Paiva also played a key role in advocating for the Yanomami Indigenous Park along the Brazil-Venezuela border
She led a major campaign for the demarcation of Yanomami territory (achieved in 1982) and later fought against mining exploitation in the area
which the military regime approved the following year
she also opposed policies aiming to divide Indigenous peoples into the two categories “traditional” (isolated with no contact with white people) and “emancipated” (inclined to acculturation)
This would have led to the latter group’s dispossession of land
Her activism culminated in contributions to Brazil’s 1988 Constituent Congress
House Speaker Ulysses Guimarães declared the new constitutional text the “Rubens Paiva Constitution.”
included a chapter dedicated to Indigenous peoples
affirming their rights to traditionally occupied lands and their exclusive use of natural resources
is one of Eunice’s great legacies to Indigenous peoples and to the country as a whole,” says Kleber Karipuna
executive coordinator of Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil by Brazilian Amazon
Paiva was once again in Brasília as part of a delegation pushing President José Sarney to demarcate Kayapó Mekranotí land
Security guards initially barred them from the presidential palace
stunned by the sight of famous artists respectfully but insistently pressing against the glass doors
eventually relented and let us in.” The land was officially demarcated in 1993
Paiva’s work only diminished in 2008 when Alzheimer’s forced her into retirement
When I’m Still Here premiered at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival, it received a nearly 10-minute standing ovation. Ironically, just days before, Indigenous groups had announced they would withdraw from negotiations over the controversial marco temporal
a legal theory that threatens constitutional protections for Indigenous lands

Her easy path to Xenia isn’t unusual if we consider the early careers of other combat-sports performers like Dave Bautista
(The latter appeared in The Mummy Returns two years after his first TV appearance on That ’70s Show.) She
which made her quick ascent rather spectacular at the time
In the mid-1990s, Huthart appeared on the competition show Gladiators
wherein athletes of all stripes play against an in-house Gladiator in physical games
“The British stuntwomen at the time — there wasn’t much to choose from,” the now 58-year-old explains
but there just weren’t many girls with combat experience
They couldn’t find a stunt double for Famke Janssen in GoldenEye with the martial-arts ability needed
and I got asked to come for an audition down at Warner Bros
I was three days into rehearsing and I was like
She quickly earned credits in some of the biggest films of the ’90s and early 2000s — The Fifth Element (1997)
The Beach (2000) — along with loads of television appearances
for continuing to bring her aboard projects
“I felt like I was in stunt royalty all the time when I was around those guys,” she recalls
It was Crane, though, who steered Huthart into her most fruitful collaboration of the era. First in 2001’s Tomb Raider, then in 2005’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith and 2010’s Salt
Huthart became Angelina Jolie’s regular stunt double
Huthart began to understand how to build character in her stuntwork
“What I learned about working with actresses — particularly Angelina
Uma Thurman was the same — they never wanted to leave the character behind when they were doing stunts
They always wanted the character to be carried through the action.” Even when she made the traditional career jump from stunt double and performer to stunt coordinator and second unit director
“I should be honoring exactly what that actress wants to deliver
not how I think it should be portrayed but exactly how she wants it portrayed,” she says
“I always want to feel like it’s the character doing it all the time.”
“Eunice is the reason I was able to have a career in action,” Jolie says
but she was the person who helped me understand the art form of stunts and storytelling with action
but those who know her well know she is equally full of empathy and warmth
She’s a brilliant stunt coordinator because she understands character and story
Huthart wasn’t the first woman to make the jump to stunt coordinator
but it was still something of a rarity within the stunt world when she did it
taking command of massive films like Maleficent
and then I was into martial arts and I was the only girl in the gym,” she says
“Sometimes I think if you look for the barrier
you’d already become a victim because of that circumstance
I would be the loudest voice in the room all the time
I would be the one that would stand up and argue.”
Which isn’t to say she doesn’t have regrets
I’ve done films where we sold our soul,” she adds
And I just felt like that film should have been good for how much blood
I was ever so disappointed that the film wasn’t the great film we always wanted it to be
The biggest reward to me is actually to create something that people really like and love to talk about.”
Perhaps Huthart, eternally humble, wouldn’t see it this way, but her body of work overall is something that people really like and love to talk about. One such person is director Nida Manzoor, whose 2023 action-comedy Polite Society positioned Huthart as the zenith of stuntwork
Young Ria (Priya Kansara) is a burgeoning martial artist who looks to none other than Eunice Huthart as inspiration
As Ria makes action films to her parents’ chagrin
Huthart hangs over her life just out of reach
Manzoor didn’t pick Huthart out of a hat for this; she grew up viewing her through the same lens her character Ria did
“Seeing her go from contestant to Gladiator and then sort of later on in my career
knowing her as a stuntwoman and then seeing her work as a stunt coordinator — she is essentially a force of nature,” Manzoor says
Huthart couldn’t quite process that an entire film was being made essentially in her honor
“We reached out to her to try and get her to agree to be involved with the film
I don’t think it quite landed that she was at the heart of the film and essentially the main character’s hero,” Manzoor explains
“It wasn’t until she came in to do her bit of voice-over that she was like
‘What is going on?’ She doesn’t believe that anyone would admire her
but just being in her presence for a couple minutes
“It still trips me out!” says Huthart of the experience
I’m still flabbergasted at the whole thing
Huthart is more likely to turn our conversation to the collaborators who mentored her
Abrams comes up many times as a “genius” with whom she can work effortlessly
it was really funny because Guy would just go
“The fascinating thing about Joe Wright is his camera is a character
so we’ve always got to find the camera concept as well,” she explains
“His camera has to deliver some form of emotion
the job of stunt professionals is not just to throw bodies and beat down — they must understand how to expertly block
This is why many stunt professionals make the leap from performing to coordinating and directing
“The first version of a fight could be reincarnated possibly a hundred times
We’d come up with something and then we would tear it apart
and then we’d end up with a version that we love
which could take three weeks sometimes to get
and then we’ll teach the actors in the environment
she’s still going a mile a minute; she most recently worked on True Detective: Night Country and the 2025 animated Sonic spinoff Knuckles
and she’s got a top-secret collaboration with Abrams on her plate
she realizes she hasn’t done a western yet and adds that genre to her bucket list
“I love anything that is confrontational and a challenge
and it’s not going to be me’ type of scenario.”) But she falls instantly back into memories
particularly of shooting Danny Boyle’s The Beach
and the thrill she gets from simply being on a set
You had to make sure you pitched out far enough that when you landed
And that’s one of the few things I’ve done where if I got it wrong
The adrenaline and the pump I got off that was magic
And when I watched the way Danny Boyle shot it and went into slo-mo …” she trails off
