OR: AquaSox hitters provided 10 runs on 11 hits to support fantastic pitching at PK Park

holding the Emeralds scoreless across his first three innings pitched

allowing Luis Suisbel to drive him home on an RBI single
Montes singled to add a second runner to the basepaths and Josh Caron delivered on the scoring opportunity
hitting his first triple of the year to plate two more runs for the AquaSox
Eugene powered their way back into the game thanks to a big swing by Bo Davidson

splitting Everett’s lead in half during the bottom of the fifth inning
Cijntje’s evening of work concluded at the end of the fifth
finishing with a final line of five innings pitched
He also struck out two batters and walked one while collecting his first professional win on the same day he joined MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 Prospects list

Could a “Revolution Row” emerge from Everett’s industrial waterfront — a dining and entertainment destination akin to Assembly Row just across the Mystic River in Somerville
In an unusual appearance at a community meeting in Everett last week
Kraft Group executives Robert Kraft and Jonathan Kraft made the case for why the city should embrace their plans for a professional soccer stadium on the banks of the Mystic where the pro soccer team they own
The father and son pledged additional development and uses well beyond the 20 or so Revs games the stadium would host each year
Robert Kraft referred to the smokestacks at the site
and contrasted it with their vision for a 24,000-seat stadium and waterfront park
“We’ve had people from outside of Massachusetts trying to get us to move the team,” Robert Kraft said
and do something really cool and creative.”
the Krafts have additionally invested well over twice that amount in the stadium and surrounding properties
pointing to the adjacent Patriot Place retail development and upgrades to the stadium
“If we’re fortunate enough to be able to build this stadium
I’m confident that working together with the community of Everett and the political leaders
that this will only be the beginning,” Jonathan Kraft said
“There will be more investment that follows.”
They left the building without taking comments
leaving Revs president Brian Bilello and vice president Cathal Conlon to talk about the project’s details
Bilello said the stadium could host concerts for up to 30,000 people
high-profile soccer games outside of Major League Soccer
“There’s really no end [to] how we could use the facility,” he said
the Revs are busy negotiating community impact agreements with Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria’s administration
and with Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s administration
State and city permitting reviews will follow
such as the Orange Line or to a future commuter rail stop
currently under discussion for a spot near the casino
DeMaria brushed away calls from a few critics in the audience to hold a citywide referendum over whether the stadium should be built
saying the Krafts’ proposal is the best use the city could hope for to clean up and reuse the site
City Councilor Michael Marchese said that what Everett really needs is more tax revenue
much like the millions that used to flow each year into the city’s coffers from the power plant during its heyday
(The annual amount the Krafts would contribute to the city hasn’t been determined yet.)
they supported the city pretty damn well over the last 100 years,” Marchese said
“I just want to see what the trickle-down part is for us
It looks fantastic [but] we need to make money also

Percival Everett's novel "James,” his radical re-imagining of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” from the perspective of the enslaved title character, has won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. “Purpose,” Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ drawing-room drama about an accomplished Black family destroying itself from within, won for drama. It also earned six Tony Award nominations last week
Everett’s Pulitzer confirmed “James” as the most celebrated U.S
and accelerated the 68-year-old author’s remarkable rise after decades of being little known to the general public
he has won the PEN/Jean Stein Award for “Dr
No,” was a Pulitzer finalist for “Telephone” and on the Booker shortlist for “The Trees.” Before Monday
“James” already had won the National Book Award
the Kirkus Prize and the Carnegie Medal for fiction
His racial and publishing satire “Erasure,” released in 2001
was adapted into the Oscar-nominated 2023 film “American Fiction.”
The Pulitzer citation called “James” an “accomplished reconsideration” that illustrates “the absurdity of racial supremacy and provide a new take on the search for family and freedom.”
“Purpose” was praised in its citation as “a skillful blend of drama and comedy that probes how different generations define heritage.” Jacobs-Jenkins had been twice nominated for a drama Pulitzer
for “Everybody” in 2018 and “Gloria” in 2016
He won the Tony Award for best play revival last year for “Appropriate,” a work centered on a family reunion in Arkansas where everyone has competing motivations and grievances
He is on the host committee of this year’s Met Gala
Pulitzer officials announced that Jason Roberts won the biography award for “Every Living Thing: The Great and Deadly Race to Know All Life” and Benjamin Nathans' "To the Success of Our Hopeless Cause: The Many Lives of the Soviet Dissident Movement" had been cited for general nonfiction
Two books were announced as history winners
like “James” and “Purpose,” explorations of race in U.S
and Black Freedom During the Civil War” and Kathleen DuVal's "Native Nations: A Millennium in North America."
Marie Howe's “New and Selected Poems” won for poetry
and composer-percussionist Susie Ibarra's “Sky Islands,” an eight-piece ensemble inspired by the rainforest habitats of Luzon

Downtown Everett, Everett Government
Perhaps best described as “The Curious Case of the Missing Mailbox,” this week USPS customers noticed the blue mail collection box at the Downtown Everett location has gone missing
Having used that drop-off option hundreds of times myself
Upon arriving at the United States Postal Service at 3102 Hoyt in Everett
It was now a lane to nowhere with no purpose
Here’s what it looked like in March vs
Why would USPS remove the super-convenient drop off option
The parking lot is usually full and inconvenient
And how are you supposed to drop off mail when they aren’t open
Will they keep the blue box next to the door
I tried calling a few times while they were open
Some patrons were able to ask the workers at the desk and received mixed answers
Other discussions mentioned a Lynnwood location and a Mill Creek location were also missing their blue collection boxes
This week the USPS drop box at the Claremont QFC on Evergreen was removed and loaded onto a flatbed truck
Hopefully the handy drive-through option comes back
It’s been a convenient option for decades

Seattle Refined: How long have you been involved in the music scene?Crowther: I started managing artists and doing artist development in 2012 as we started the Everett Music Initiative
Managing artists gave me a really important perspective as we were producing events in Everett and building a music festival
We started by throwing shows at a bar in Everett monthly
What artists have influenced you?Our inspiration comes from the community
Everett is a city with a great history of live music coming through
What excited us was building a community amongst local artists
and pairing them up with bigger names from Seattle and other touring acts we could route through
strong marketing and a brand people could trust for new music discovery
it felt like a recipe that filled a gap for where Everett was in 2012
Getting the insight of working with local artists and seeing the work and dreams behind their projects really helped inspire the team to build a festival that shines a spotlight on local artists
as well as regional and national touring artists
What genres of music does the festival cover? Each year
our lineup includes an array of genres that makes sure there's something for everyone
Fisherman's Village does tend to have a strong presence of Americana artists
soul and R&B as well as rock and roll projects
but always round it out to make sure there's a diverse mix of flavors in the performances
How has your festival evolved over time? Our festival learns a lot from attendees and the community each year
and there are often changes made every year
With our move to the three stages inside APEX Everett this year
there have been performances on as many as 20 stages and locations since 2014
Sasquatch and plenty others helped pave the way for a demand for the multi-day music festival experience in the Pacific Northwest
We felt like Everett deserved to have its own weekend that brought names the community
and gave a chance for local artists to play
that desire to see a lot of artists in one day seems to have evolved
and we've found that consolidating things a bit while trying to get bigger headliners has helped
It seems like the "less is more" approach is where a lot of longstanding events in the industry are heading
and that's in line with a lot of the feedback we've got the last few years
Do you have a favorite festival moment that sticks out to you? There have been lots of special moments over the years
Part of the challenge of running a festival is to find those moments to take it all in
where you leave the stress and commotion of it all to appreciate what's happening that moment
People were pouring in the doors to catch his set
and I was able to sneak in the alley door and watch from the side stage at the Historic Everett Theatre
I looked out at all the smiling faces and caught his entire set
and it was that moment of appreciating what I do and why I do it
What experiences in your life have shaped your career path?I think the biggest experience that shaped my career path was finding Everett
Finding Everett helped me understand what community is and what it means
It helped me understand that community work is my calling and there's no real ladder to climb or blueprint to learn
but it also takes the appreciation for learning as you go
If we want to learn more about EMI and Fisherman's Village, where should we find it?everettmusicinitiative.org
Anything you're working on right now that you're really excited about?Everett Music Initiative continues to grow its partnerships with the City of Everett
We're continuing to grow the Music at the Marina series on the waterfront
partnering with Everett Pride on their 2025 event and bringing national talent to our Rock the Boat event at the Port of Everett
Growing our partnerships and producing meaningful events keep us busy and enjoying what we do
We ask everyone! My daily drink is a black Americano

Emerson (No. 18 MLB Pipeline top 100) is the near-consensus top prospect in Seattle's farm system
He was selected in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft with the 22nd overall pick
Emerson was limited to 70 games in 2024 due to injuries and played 29 games for Everett after he was promoted
12 RBIs and stole nine bases with the AquaSox and slashed .225/.331/.317 with a .648 OPS
Emerson's numbers have improved this season
He's slashed .258/.365/.371 and has a .736 OPS
Emerson started spring training in the Mariners' big league camp as a non-roster invitee
an RBI and two steals in 10 Cactus League games
Emerson already has one of the best gloves in Seattle's farm system with plus speed and bat-to-ball skills
Emerson could develop the power tool this season with another year of experience
The power hasn't developed yet and the speed hasn't been on display like it has in the past
but Friday could be a sign of good things on the horizon for the Mariners' No

"Or is this something that can bring great pride and honor," Robert Kraft said
gesturing to a visual concept of what the stadium would look like
would be built in the same place where the shuttered power plant is now
"If we're fortunate to be able to build this facility here in Everett
will really become a heart of the community," Jonathan Kraft said
Robert Kraft and Jonathan Kraft left the meeting without taking any questions or comments from residents
since neither Kraft gave one solid purpose to the project
it seems like the stadium is "going to be everything under the sun."
Here's what else you need to know about Robert Kraft and Jonathan Kraft's plans for a stadium in Everett
and have multiple uses as a space other than just a soccer stadium
The Kraft group is bargaining with The City of Everett over community benefit agreements before moving on to filing for permits
Robert Kraft also said during the meeting that the stadium would be privately funded
"Main concerns that I have heard from members of the community: Traffic
and what will it generate in terms of community benefits," Everett City Councilor Robert Vanpen said to WCVB
The push by the Kraft group for this stadium for the New England Revolution has been going on since at least 2023

Johnny Jones will be remembered for coaching both the Lansing Everett boys AND girls basketball teams to state championships in the early 2000s
He is the only high school basketball coach in Michigan ever to win state titles with the boys and girls teams at the same school while coaching both teams
For those who really knew Johnny Lee Jones
the three state championships don’t begin to do him justice
It’s worth keeping that in present tense because his impact and the feelings people have for him are very much alive
As those who love him described him: He was a father figure
the friend and coach who would give it to you straight
caring and supportive person that I've ever met,” said Kamaria Douglas
who played on Jones’ two girls state championship teams in 2000 and 2001 and still talked with him regularly
with pride and always put my best foot forward
telling me to dig deeper and to work harder.”
“Growing up in a single-parent household, he was like a father. Definitely a father figure,” Desmond Ferguson
his former player and successor as Everett’s boys basketball coach
“He taught us the game of basketball and everything
but it was just how he carried himself and handled himself
“I got a chance to coach with him that one year before I took over
But that speaks to his character and what he stood for
When you grew up not seeing a lot of successful marriages
His players knew that long ago when she’d be on the bench with them
and more recently when Jones was her caretaker
the parent of a player or a long-time close friend
Kenny Turner first met Jones in 1968 when Turner was playing baseball for Sexton and Jones was pitching for Battle Creek Central
raised a stink before the game because he didn’t think there was any way Jones was still in high school
“He had a bushy Afro and goatee,” Turner said
A great basketball player and running back
part of Battle Creek Central’s 1966 state championship team
whose nickname was “Tuna” coming out of Battle Creek
he was the best player and pitcher on Earvin “Magic” Johnson’s slow-pitch softball team in Lansing
“Johnny was the driving force,” Turner said
“He was one of the most real friends that you can have
if you ask him his opinion about something
He's going to tell you exactly what he feels
And that's what everybody respected about him
That’s what separated him from a lot of people
but then he’d have you rolling on the floor laughing five minutes later
because he’s going to say something that you haven't heard
Jones was famous for how he demonstrated a jump stop to his players
for his press defense — which Ferguson had him come teach to his teams after he took over — for spending 30 minutes on how to take a charge
And for recognizing when there was a greater
more practical life lesson that needed to be taught
Derick Nelson
the star of Jones’ 2004 boys state title team
remembers discovering his car had a flat tire in the parking lot after practice
“I didn’t know how to change it,” Nelson said
He asked everybody on the team if they knew how to change a tire
Every man should know how to change a tire.’ Something small like that
That’s why I said he was more like a father figure for a lot of us
because it just felt like a family playing for him
He also got the best out of a lot of teams on the court during 32 years as the boys coach (until 2012) and 13 with the girls (through 2008) — including an era at Everett in the early 2000s that’s unlikely to ever be matched
The Everett girls made the Class A state championship game three straight years
Jones led the Everett boys to the Class A title
The girls basketball season moved to the winter in 2007-08 and Jones coached one final season of both
In terms of his feat — winning titles with both teams — he has few peers
Hudsonville Unity Christian’s Scott Soodsma won a girls state title in 2006 and a boys title there in 2019
Lansing’s Paul Cook won at Eastern High School with the boys and later with Lansing Catholic’s girls team
Those are the only other two coaches to win both titles
No one else has done it while running both programs at the same school
“He saw something in us that none of us thought that we had,” said Candice Jackson
who starred on that 1999 team that made the state championship game
“That's what led us to get all the way to the state championship and for them to go on and win it a couple years after back to back
“I don't know if anybody in the Lansing area would have foreseen that when he first took the (girls) job
I think we won like six games one year (as freshmen) and then seven games
and then we didn't lose a game until regionals our junior year
and then senior year in the state championship game
they warmed up before games to the James Brown song
Everett’s level of dominance in those championship seasons is something this area might never see again in girls basketball
Good teams struggled to get the ball past half court
he wouldn’t even go out there to receive the trophy,” Turner said
“He told his assistants to go out there with the team.”
He didn’t even show up when his girls championship teams went into the Greater Lansing Sports Hall of Fame
He just swung by at the end of a reception for them later at the school
“You couldn’t pay him to get in a picture,” Douglas said
one of his girls teams saw it when he cried after a postseason win
“He was a genuine and caring soul and he was a teacher by nature,” Jackson said of Jones
who also taught physical education and coached JV baseball at Everett
“He made sure that you didn't just pass the class
“All the positive impact he had on so many kids’ lives
I know I can probably speak for a lot of other players
students and people — I’m eternally grateful and blessed to have had a chance to play for him and come up under him.”
A Johnny Jones memorial ceremony will be held from 12-3 p.m
Anyone who'd like to celebrate Jones' life is welcome
