Here’s a few other morsels we learned about Everman during her first show:
You will never see me cook with a green bell pepper
I feel like the devil himself invented them,” she said
The other product viewers won’t ever see her reaching for in the “Fox 11 Living” kitchen: truffle oil
She said the women in her Gather on Broadway kitchen like to tease her that they’re going to feed her green bell peppers dipped in truffle oil
She has a 20-year arsenal of recipes to choose from to bring to the show
She went with Asian chicken lettuce wraps for her first official dish as host
It was a chance to show off her mad skills with a knife
because the gadget is too labor intensive to clean afterward
she prefers to finely cut up her own cloves by hand
She demonstrated her preferred method of rocking the knife forward on the center of the cutting board to chop
It’s a “little dance move” she uses for chopping most everything in her kitchen

Three small dogs were abandoned inside a duct-taped box at a public park in Everman
and the city's animal shelter is trying to track down the owners
According to a post from Municipal Animal Services for Everman & Forest Hills
shelter staff was called to Heritage Park on April 9 after a city worker came upon a box sitting on a picnic table
The box was a Walmart box that had been duct-taped closed. Inside the box were three small dogs, including a black-and-white dog that looked like a Havenese, an older chihuahua, and a younger tan dog that looked like a chihuahua mix. Photos of all three dogs can be seen on this post
The surprising element is that the dogs seemed to have been cared for
"We do not know the circumstances around why this happened but it does appear that these dogs were once loved," the post said
"Two are freshly groomed & wearing clothes
Speculation on why the dogs had been dumped ranged from "death of the owner" to a domestic issue
Shelters have also been overcrowded in recent months and turning away animal surrenders
More than one commenter suggested that a groomer might recognize the dogs
"We need to locate the owner of these dogs if in fact they are missing from a beloved home," the shelter said
"We know things are getting rough in the world
Many shelters no longer accept owner surrenders which leaves owners with uncertainty of what to do
However this is not the answer in any way."

The Board of Trustees has been mired in conflict for over a year
Now they’ve chosen an interim president without higher ed experience

the chair of the Mott Community College Board of Trustees
and a group of fellow trustees are facing criticism for a new interim president hire
The Board of Trustees at Mott Community College recently caused an uproar among faculty
staff and community members when they voted to hire an interim president without higher ed experience
Critics see the move as the last straw in a series of questionable decisions since the board of the college in Flint
They say trustees have been mired in drama and infighting for over a year
Some employees worry the dysfunction could put the college’s accreditation at risk
Last week the board voted 5 to 2 to offer a six-month interim presidency to Shaunda Richardson-Snell
She’s held executive positions at major companies
and holds a master’s degree in business administration but has never worked for a college or university
Two of the three other candidates for the position have Ph.D.s
and all have experience working in academic settings—including the college’s vice president of student academic success
who is currently earning his education doctorate and was serving as interim president until Richardson-Snell took the job
made a motion to enter into closed session to discuss offering Richardson-Snell a contract before hearing public comments
who ultimately voted against Richardson-Snell’s contract
argued that members of the public should be allowed to speak before the decision; they were outvoted
(Everman did not respond to requests for comment.)
After the board announced Richardson-Snell’s selection
their attorney further inflamed tensions by reading some of the benefits Richardson-Snell would receive
up to $15,000 for moving expenses and an $800 monthly “car allowance.”
this is not an interim—no way,” said Larry Juchartz
a professor of English who previously headed the faculty union for 12 years
“We anticipate that the next step will be for them to simply announce
‘We’re making this interim a permanent position.’”
including many residents of Flint and surrounding Genesee County
expressed outrage during a largely scathing public comment period
“This lady has never been a teacher before
and y’all are paying her all this?” Arthur Woodson
“Y’all are crooked … Y’all keep doing things like you don’t even care.”
Distressed employees say the hiring process for the interim president has been unorthodox
board members typically hire an internal administrator as interim president while they search for a permanent leader
announced in May she would be leaving the college after 10 years
the board announced a search for an interim
(Walker-Griffea is now the inaugural director of the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education
The board also listed a bachelor’s degree as the minimum degree requirement for the position, a decision some professors and administrators criticized. Everman argued at a May meeting that the lower educational standard is allowed by state law
though Walker-Griffea pushed back that requiring less than a master’s degree is highly unusual for a campus president job search
the Mott Community College Education Association
is skeptical about the process that led to her hire
“Something is not adding up with their choice,” Owens said
“Her résumé looks great from a business perspective
Now faculty members and administrators are fighting the decision—and general frustrations with the board—on multiple fronts
dean of counseling and student development and president of the college’s supervisors and management union
warned trustees at the meeting that the union would notify the college’s accreditor
Owens said the faculty union is ready to file a complaint with the HLC as well
noting it’s better for the college to be on the accreditor’s watch list now than lose accreditation down the line as a result of mismanagement
The union also filed a Freedom of Information Act request seeking materials related to the hiring process
including board members’ notes from the interviews
She noted that trustees didn’t use any kind of scoring rubric
another aspect of the process that raised eyebrows
an adjunct communications professor at the college
went so far as to file recall petitions against three board members in the aftermath of the meeting: board vice chair Janet Couch
(Everman and board treasurer Jeffrey Swanson also voted for Richardson-Snell but are up for re-election in November and can’t be recalled under Michigan state law.)
“It really all just struck me as lacking transparency and lacking accountability,” Hayes said of the hiring process
“I don’t expect that any elected official has to do what I want all the time as a voter
but I do expect that they are willing to listen to constituents and also explain why” they make the decisions they do
told Inside Higher Ed she was eager “to return to home” and “contribute to the education and success of the next generation.”
She pushed back on the idea that her background isn’t right for the role
There’s a “growing trend in higher education to pull leadership from a pool of industry experts and business executives [to] bring a fresh eye
She plans to focus on continuing to increase enrollment
retention and graduation rates and find “opportunities to diversify and increase revenue streams,” “develop new corporate partnerships” and focus on skilled trades and vocational programs
“I have a tremendous amount to contribute to an already thriving institution,” she said
they don’t know me … My unwavering focus is on the students
and I know that that’s a shared vision across the board here at Mott.”
While she’s not sure yet if she’ll apply for the permanent presidency
she believes she has “the qualifications to undertake the permanent position
staff and community members see Richardson-Snell’s contract as the latest in a series of controversies involving the board
it was boring.” But for the last year and a half
He and others have harbored concerns about the tone of board debates
Early signs of tumult started at a meeting in January 2023
when Freeman and former board chair Anne Figueroa accused Everman
Swanson and Wolcott of allegedly violating the open meetings act
based on a conversation with a former board attorney
that the group had discussed board business privately in advance of the meeting
including what board positions each would occupy
A tense discussion about board policy followed
one of his first moves was to try to replace then board attorney Amberly Brennan
His initial efforts didn’t garner enough votes
but in a letter read at a meeting in April
offered to step aside and allow the board to choose another firm
despite pushback from Reyes that there was no investigation into any complaints against Brennan
The board then operated without an attorney for months as members argued about who should replace her
That decision also sparked controversy among faculty
a local activist who previously ran for the Michigan Senate
has spoken out at board meetings for months
repeatedly filing FOIA requests for information about board decision-making
She even sent a complaint to the state attorney general in January raising concerns about Brennan’s ouster and a lack of transparency
The octogenarian is the founder of a political action committee
and plans to mobilize against the board members up for re-election
“I feel like the skunk at a garden party,” Walton said of her attendance at board meetings
but she believes the community needs to hold the board accountable
the skirmishes in the recent past feel like warning signs
She worries there’s some form of “cultural warfare” going on
though the board majority’s vision for the college remains unclear
Owens hopes none of the board strife trickles down to affect students
who are disproportionately people of color and from low-income backgrounds
“You need someone steering the ship who knows where they’re going and what they’re doing
and we don’t have that right now,” she said
The Trump administration has canceled close to $3 billion in NIH and NSF research grants

The final destination for the family’s flight was India
Noel was not with the family when they boarded the flight. Investigators also learned Singh had stolen $10,000 from his employer just before fleeing the country
According to a timeline given by Everman police
Noel was last seen in October 2022 after his mother gave birth to twins
Rodriguez-Singh applied for passports for her children

esotropia — when eyes turn inward toward the nose — in both eyes and chronic lung disease
cadaver dogs alerted police to the topsoil underneath the concrete
no evidence pointing to Noel’s whereabouts was found that night
and an Everman police spokesperson said Thursday that Noel’s body still remains to be found
Rodriguez-Singh was indicted on one count of capital murder
two counts of injury to a child and one count of abandoning a child without the intent to return last year
She also has an active federal warrant for her arrest on charges of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution
Police also said they obtained an arrest warrant for Singh on charges of abandoning or endangering a child
Police have been working with federal authorities to extradite Rodriguez-Singh and Singh back to the U.S
America has an extradition treaty with India
but the process is long and can take months to complete
An FBI news release said Rodriguez-Singh is between 5 feet

Sheila Kriegel sat on the witness stand Tuesday morning in a Polk County courtroom
looking away from the man whose reckless driving led to her sister's death
Last year, Charles Everman, 19
killed Kriegel's little sister Samantha Jo Kriegel while driving about 70 mph in a 35-mph zone in Ankeny
As she talked on the witness stand, Sheila Kriegel told Everman how she and her sister will never be able to go shopping on Black Friday again
how her sister never saw her niece graduate from high school
and how it's not fair that a stranger ended her life.
"It's not fair that he's able to go about his life while she's been forever removed from hers," Sheila Kriegel said.
Polk County District Judge William Kelly sentenced Everman to three years of probation. Everman pleaded guilty Aug
1 to one count of vehicular homicide by reckless driving and one count of serious injury by vehicle
Under the law he could have been sentenced to prison for over a decade
Everman will also have to pay $158,000 in restitution
Kelly did not sentence Everman to community service in order to allow Everman to work more and pay the Kriegel family restitution.
Everman was driving his 2012 Toyota Highlander between 68 and 72 mph seconds before he collided with Samantha Kriegel's 2006 Volkswagen Jetta
Samantha Kriegel suffered several injuries in the accident at the intersection of North Ankeny Boulevard and Northwest Ninth Street.
A few feet to Everman's right at Tuesday's hearing sat more than a half-dozen supporters, including his parents and his girlfriend.
Ellie Martens, was in the car that night and in the courtroom Tuesday
Martens sustained a broken ankle and other injuries in the crash
but did not want to press forward with the criminal case against her boyfriend
said Assistant Polk County Attorney Jaki Lyn Livingston.
Neither the state or the defense asked for Kelly to sentence Everman to prison time
Everman told Kelly he lost sleep on many nights during the first month after the crash
Someday he wants to start his own landscaping business
told Kelly that Everman cannot undo what he did that day but has expressed remorse.
"He's a young man who has had a remarkably unremarkable life," Spellman said
"He's a young man that would be able to demonstrate he's a law-abiding citizen."
in which his case would be expunged from his record after he finished his sentence.
Livingston said she agreed Everman can be rehabilitated
Everman acted more than carelessly; he acted recklessly
"Samantha Kriegel can never be any of those things
because he took her life," Livingston said
"I do not believe the effect of taking somebody's life should be erased from his record."
Samantha Kriegel's parents wondered whether Everman learned anything and felt remorse.
but it's also an age where as a driver he knows what's right and what's appropriate," Kelly said
