City of Fairfax officials are developing plans to construct a new primary fire station
Though the project’s timing and final price tag still need to be pinned down, progress is being made and details will soon emerge, a representative of the architect told the Fairfax City Council at an April 22 meeting
“We’ve got a pretty good pace,” Mark Manetti, a partner at BKV Group
The city has already spent $5.7 million to acquire property at 4085-4087 University Drive to house the potentially three-story-tall station
plus about $139,000 on the feasibility study and other initial plans
according to Fairfax City Fire Chief John O’Neal
The project was estimated several years ago to cost a total of $41 million
several council members questioned city leaders about whether that figure is still viable
“That was based probably on data from two years ago,” said O’Neal
who noted that the city looked at costs for similar projects in Fairfax
Loudoun and Henrico counties to come up with the figure
City staff plan to bring a number of concept proposals to the council at an upcoming meeting
work toward a final concept design will begin
Manetti estimates another eight to 10 weeks of further design development awaits
the city should have a better understanding of the expected cost and know “if we need to make any course corrections,” he said
Councilmember Thomas Peterson pressed for a feel for what the costs will be
both for completion of the project and borrowing funds necessary to make it happen
At this stage, City Manager Bryan Foster conceded that he “can’t answer” that question. He pointed to the uncertainty of construction costs — tariffs may play a major role — and the city also has to consider the interest-rate environment when it goes to borrow cash
Foster suggested the city “may issue part of the debt to get started and pay for construction
The new station would be constructed just south of the existing Fire Station #3 at 4081 University Blvd. That facility currently is staffed by 12 city personnel, plus volunteers
and includes offices and meeting facilities for the City of Fairfax Fire Department
The land where construction will take place was formerly owned by George Mason University
Foster estimated construction will take at least 18 months
Also at its April 22 meeting, the Fairfax City Council awarded a $4.12 million contract to Sagres Construction Corporation for long-awaited improvements at the intersection where Fairfax Blvd
Farr Avenue and McLean Avenue come together
“This is taking a very complicated intersection
simplifying it and adding pedestrian accommodations,” said Wendy Block Sanford
Creating a more conventional four-way intersection
the project will remove the approaches from McLean Ave to the north of Fairfax Blvd and from Warwick Ave to the south of Fairfax Blvd
“This improvement will reduce pedestrian crossing distances and reduce the number of intersection conflict points
thus making the intersection safer for both motorists and pedestrians,” the city’s project page says
The project will also provide a traffic light at the intersection of Farr and nearby Arlington Blvd
and support a planned extension of Farr Avenue north of Arlington Blvd
“This is a big and complex project,” Peterson said, asking for the contract award to be pulled from the council’s consent agenda so staff could provide a public update
Planning for improvements began in mid-2018
and the initial timeline called for construction to begin in August 2023 and be wrapped up by July 2024
but with the construction contract awarded
The city’s project page now lists a potential time frame of spring 2025 through summer 2026 for construction
The project’s total cost of $8.75 million is 100% federally funded

A 16-year-old is in the hospital with serious injuries after a stabbing at West Potomac High School in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County
A school resource officer rushed to help the teen who was stabbed just before 10 a.m.
Officers with Fairfax County responded to the school within minutes
Police had earlier said the 16-year-old who was stabbed had suffered life-threatening injuries
But during a news conference Wednesday afternoon
police said the student was in stable condition at a nearby hospital
A 15-year-old boy is in custody and will be charged with malicious wounding
Officers have recovered the knife the suspect is accused of using in the stabbing
Three students got into a fight in a hallway near some classrooms before the stabbing
The third student involved in the fighting
is being interviewed by investigators but police do not expect that student will be criminally charged
Authorities have not released the names of any of the teens
No other suspects are believed to be involved outside of the student who is in custody
Police Chief Kevin Davis acknowledged video of the fight that’s been posted on social media
but the video doesn’t tell the entire story,” Davis said
A mother of one student said she’s concerned about her son’s safety
“This is something that could have been had stopped,” Aellene told WTOP
Fairfax County School Board members Mateo Dunne
Ilryong Moon and Ryan McElveen called for local leads to take action to improve safety in schools in response to the stabbing
The school board members said the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors should increase the number of school resource officers to ensure one or more officers are at every middle and high school
The group also called on the public school system to take measures to prioritize safety such as increasing the number of security assistants
and installing weapons detection tech and video cameras
Virginia Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell urged those who are struggling to take advantage of the counseling services and reiterated elected leaders’ commitment to safety in schools
“This hit even closer to home for me as a West Potomac parent whose son was at school today as the incident occurred and whose three other children and two other siblings graduated from West Potomac,” said Sen
“These students are so close to the end of the school year and for many
This time for celebration is now marred by this ugly incident
These kids deserved so much better today.”
Superintendent Michelle Reid said counselors will be available to students and staff at the school
of shock that this would happen at West Potomac High School
one of our high schools here in Fairfax County
I’m very proud of the response of our staff to this incident,” Reid said
“They responded quickly and admirably and may have saved a life today.”
The school was placed under a brief lockdown during the response
Parents were notified through the school’s alert system
and classes have resumed under heightened security
School officials said the building is under “Secure the Building” status, during which students can move about inside the school but exterior doors are locked, according to the school system’s website
Some parents at the school on Wednesday questioned the law enforcement and school officials about why they weren’t being allowed to pick up their students from school early
One father told WTOP the communication with parents was “unsatisfactory.” Bill Beal said he hasn’t been allowed to pick up his daughter who saw the stabbing happen
I think that’s all these parents want
hug their kids,” Beal told WTOP outside the school
“There’s more than one victim in this — people that witnessed it.”
The police chief tried to reassure parents by telling them the school system would “soon” communicate when students could be picked up
“As all of our emotions are running high
we don’t want to let the school spill out into this residential community and have skirmishes
altercations and maybe even additional crimes take place,” Davis told parents and reporters gathered outside the school
“All those considerations are something that we’re thinking about
and I’m sorry your children had to endure what they what they had to endure today.”
the school system has been rolling out a pilot program that will place metal detectors in schools
Reid said the technology was in place at another school in Fairfax County on Wednesday morning
WTOP’s Scott Gelman reported from the scene

Nadia Fairfax's birthday parties have long been the talk of Sydney
Known as the 'It Girl' of Australian fashion
her celebrations each year were once an eastern suburbs high society fixture with miles-long Who's Who guest lists
Nadia has kept her 36th birthday bash low-key and nixed her annual hashtag 'PartywithNardy' as her tight girl group continues to shrink following her falling out with eyebrow queen Kristin Fisher
Sharing several stunning photographs of the event to her Instagram on Tuesday
Nadia was all smiles as she celebrated with her nearest and dearest
The event appeared to be garden party themed
with some guests seen dishing up delicious plates of food
Everyone donned their best clothes as they enjoyed drinks inside Nadia's lavish home
before they moved the gathering out into the yard
has long made a fuss of her birthday bashes
her celebrations were once the fixture of high society with a long Who's Who guest list
Other guests could be seen dancing up a storm
but there were some very notable faces missing from her garden soirée
PR guru Montarna McDonald was absent from the birthday celebrations, despite the 35-year-old once dubbing Nadia her 'partner in crime' in a 2021 social media post
The pair were so close that Nadia even met her financier husband Michael Wayne at Montarna's December 2018 wedding to ex-partner Nick Pitt
despite inviting Nadia to her Sydney society husband Ned O'Neil's 40th celebration in May last year
was frequently seen running in the same girl group as Nadia which
Nadia was also a fixture at Deborah's 'mates-moon' following her wedding to Ned.
In June 2018, Deborah invited Nadia and other female friends onto her father John Symond's superyacht Hasna to celebrate her new married life.
Montarna McDonald (left) was absent from the birthday celebrations, despite the 35-year-old once dubbing Nadia her 'partner in crime' in a 2021 social media post
But it seems their relationship may have cooled as Deborah was notably absent from Nadia's birthday celebrations this week
Another high-society name who didn't attend the soirée was stylist Elliot Garnaut
were once attached at the hip and attended several events together
with Elliot styling the blonde beauty for her outings
Elliot was nowhere to be seen in the images Nadia shared to her socials
Nor were Pilates queen Bernadette Fahey or heiress Lou O'Neil
Hamilton Island owner Nicky Oatley also ran in the same circles as Nadia
Daily Mail Australia understands Nadia even asked Nicky to be the godmother to her one-year-old daughter Cordelia just months ahead of her birthday party
but the honour was politely declined as Nicky doesn't consider her a close friend
But the most notably absent face from Nadia's 36th was Double Bay eyebrow artist Kristin Fisher
with the pair suffering a very public falling out in 2021
Sydney's elite social set was rocked by rumours the former best friends went their separate ways in the wake of Kristin's cocaine scandal that year
(left) also chose to stay away from her friend's birthday bash
Deborah had invited Nadia and husband Michael Wayne (left) to her husband Ned O'Neil's 40th celebration in May last year
Kristin, 39, was allegedly caught buying cocaine on July 17, 2021 after a drug dealer was pulled over by police for driving erratically in Bondi
The cocaine drama went unnoticed by the media for months
before suddenly making headlines in September 2021
Kristin and Nadia unfollowed each other on Instagram at about the same time
When Daily Mail Australia contacted the women for comment
they quietly refollowed each other on the social media app
Nadia also insisted she hadn't fallen out with Kristin - despite rumours of their rift being the talk of the eastern suburbs
'What you're speculating is factually incorrect,' she said
'Kristin and I have had a wonderful friendship over the years and I continue to wish her well throughout her current situation
and no doubt you'll hear the same from Kristin
'I had no prior knowledge of the [cocaine] incident
and found out just like everyone else through the media.'
Another high-society name who didn't attend the soiree was her stylist Elliot Garnaut
The most notably absent face from Nadia's 36th was Double Bay eyebrow artist Kristin Fisher
Nadia's high society friendship circle used to include fashion PR maven Montarna Pitt (left) celebrity stylist Elliot Garnaut (centre)
Fairfax was pictured with Garnaut and Pitt
Kristin and Nadia once again unfollowed each other
Kristin served as a bridesmaid at Nadia's multimillion-dollar wedding to financier Michael
Kristin's daughter Lila was a flower girl at the ritzy nuptials
which were held at a heritage-listed mansion in Sydney's Darling Point
Kristin uploaded images of herself celebrating with Nadia
adding the caption: 'Our best friends' wedding.'
But in the weeks following the cocaine saga
Nadia and Kristin were untagged in each other's Instagram photos from the wedding
Kristin was allegedly caught buying cocaine after her drug dealer was pulled over by police for driving erratically
Kristin was convicted and fined $550 after she failed to appear in Waverley Court in September 2021, charged with possessing a prohibited drug and failing to comply with public health orders
she managed to convince the court to annul her conviction for cocaine possession
earning a six-month conditional release order and a stern warning from Magistrate Ross Hudson

A Fairfax County School Board member accused of defrauding his employer out of more than $1.5 million has stepped away as chairman of the board’s budget committee
Kyle McDaniel, an at-large representative, no longer oversees the committee, having willingly ceded the position to vice chair Rachna Sizemore Heizer in recent weeks
The decision came as the budget process nears its end
and with the need for him to place a greater focus on his current legal case
“A couple of weeks ago I decided to pass the Budget Committee baton over to my very capable colleague so I can focus on this business dispute
and am a liaison to three other committees,” McDaniel said
Anything else is gossip and conspiracy theory
I am looking forward to continuing to support our schools and community.”
without a public announcement from McDaniel or the school board as a whole
given how frequently board committees reshuffle
Sizemore Heizer will hold the title of budget committee chair for only a few months until the school board makes new committee appointments during the summer
McDaniel is facing a lawsuit initiated by his employer, Blue Label Aviation, which filed a civil complaint in Loudoun County in March alleging that he had embezzeled $175,000. The lawsuit was first reported by The Daily Wire
Blue Label Aviation claimed that McDaniel — who was employed as the company’s treasurer and secretary — had been charging personal expenses to the company’s credit card and bank account
McDaniel was accused of racking up $120,000 in unauthorized expenses
misappropriating funds to cover family vacations
The complaint says he later confessed to the company’s chief financial officer about the expenditures and made a roughly $50,000 payment in July 2024 to partially cover the costs
that didn’t stop McDaniel’s spending
as an audit conducted later that year found his unauthorized tab had grown to $160,000
An amended complaint filed in court earlier this month also accused McDaniel of fraudulently registering two of the company’s training aircraft in his own name in an attempt to sell them “for his own
Blue Label Aviation has accused McDaniel of both embezzlement and fraud
The company is seeking a court judgment in the total amount of $1.675 million
as well as total punitive relief of $1.05 million
Blue Label Aviation is also asking the court to let it take possession of the two aircraft registered by McDaniel
A Herndon resident who worked as a policy director for Springfield District Supervisor Pat Herrity before shifting to the private sector, McDaniel was elected to the school board in 2023 and began serving as the budget committee chair in July 2024
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will adopt a final budget for fiscal year 2026 on May 13, and the school board will then approve a budget for FCPS on May 22.

It’s been up and running for over a year and it’s staffed 24/7
opened up their Real Time Crime Center to outsiders for the first time
It looks like a mix between a conference room and a computer lab
Sitting on the top floor of police headquarters
it’s right down the hall from where Police Chief Kevin Davis sits when he’s in his office
And it gives the department near instantaneous access to ongoing incidents that might turn into breaking news — while also helping the department close more cases faster
“Our mission boils down to three things,” said Capt
we want to provide insight into critical incidents so our leadership can make more informed and better decisions
we want to provide a virtual layer of officer safety for our patrol officers that are working out on the street.”
The goal is to provide quick information to patrol officers who are the first layer of response when someone needs help
more than 6,500 cases have been impacted by those who work inside the facility — everything from missing persons cases to felony arrests
The county’s license plate reading system is also connected to the crime center
showing where different cameras operate and where different patrol officers are
An icon will show up on that map whenever an incident is reported
or when an officer on the streets activates their body camera
which can livestream back into the crime center
an officer doesn’t even have to press the button; technology will do it for them
when you draw your weapon it sends that alert to us and it also starts automatically recording on your body-worn camera,” Bull said
“We can click on it and go right to the action and see what’s going on.”
That gives additional eyes on certain situations, such as the incident last week, when two officers were shot
Police also highlighted a felony hit-and-run case involving a driver who was charged with DUI
A witness was able to snap a blurry photo of the pickup truck driving away from the scene
and police were able to zoom in enough to identify a few characteristics
When an officer who was trailing the driver saw him turn
the lights came on and the driver was pulled over — but not before trying to elude police off-road
“If you look at the time frame there of when the call came out to when the suspect is in custody — 24 minutes,” Bull said
“That’s leveraging technology to speed up investigations and to give our patrol officers more exact information.”
staffers at the Real Time Crime Center watched an assault and robbery occur live outside a convenience store
Officers arrived there in 70 seconds and Bull said the suspect was caught before he could escape
Pointing to an image showing him in an adjacent parking lot
Bull said “that suspect is getting to run and he’s not going to make it very far.”
He said without the crime center watching it live as it happened
by the time it took for someone to call 911 and get the crime reported
the man who was arrested would have been long gone
“That case could have taken days or weeks to solve,” Bull said

eighth grader Kasra Karimi played a board game as a child
he always considered ways to make it more fun
when his classes were online and he was bored at home
he considered other unique forms of entertainment
He was still in elementary school at the time
and there were boxes from Costco and Amazon orders lying around
They provided the inspiration for what Karimi described as a series of minigames he crafted for himself
he grabbed a pingpong ball and Ferrero Rocher chocolate box
hoping it helps make math enjoyable for students who may dread the subject
“The whole point of this game is to educate and incorporate math and a game into one,” Karimi said
It does that using a series of inserts Karimi created
Players throw the ball into one of the chocolate box’s slots
They range from simple addition and subtraction to figures as complex as square roots
Each one either increases or decreases a participant’s point total
“This can be played from a spectrum from preschoolers to college to precalculus,” Karimi said
who played for about two hours the first time he learned about the idea
“It was so much fun,” Pegeman Karimi said
all those math equations that you have to do.”
and he and his son sat down to write what he thought the game is
They conducted searches about similar products that may already exist
hired a lawyer to review it and learned there was an expedited process for first-time filers
it was assigned to an examiner and within about two-and-a-half months
Kasra received a patent,” Pegeman Karimi said
and now includes both the physical variation and an app version
Kasra is hoping his work encourages other students to patent their own ideas
but someone needs to pay attention to them and make sure these ideas become patents,” Pegeman Karimi said
they become toys or something manufactured.”

Eleven county agencies and local nonprofit organizations gathered at the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Academy on Saturday for the annual Unified Response Day
Representing the Health Department at the event were Jody Gamber from the Emergency Preparedness and Response division
Together they spoke with attendees on the importance of considering medical needs when creating a supplies kit or preparing for a disaster
“No one like to think about floods or tornadoes
but the reality is that the ability to survive and recover from such events depends on preparation,” said Gamber
“We’re encouraging people to think about their health needs in the context of an emergency

What actions would you take if the things you rely on day-to-day to maintain your health are not available
It’s so important to make a plan and build your disaster kit.”

(7News) — A motorcyclist died early Sunday morning following a high-speed crash on Interstate 66 in Fairfax County
State Police officers noticed a motorcycle going 100 miles per hour on I-66 eastbound near Nutley Street
A VSP trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop
the officer eventually slowed down for safety reasons
The trooper then came across a crash after the same motorcyclist struck an SUV on the car's rear passenger side

The driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment
The identity of the motorcyclist is yet to be determined
Police in Fairfax County, Virginia, said Thursday that a 36-year-old man from Fairfax shot two county police officers before another officer shot him four times and killed him
The incident started Wednesday afternoon when an officer operating a radar gun in the area clocked a driver speeding and initiated a traffic stop
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said during a news conference hours after the shooting occurred
Jamal Wali was argumentative and refused to obey commands
after an officer pulled him over at 2:36 p.m
Wednesday in the 4000 block of Majestic Lane near Greenbriar
police said Wali reached for a gun holstered in his gun belt and shot the two officers from the driver side of his 1999 Toyota Camry
The two officers who were shot were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening
Chief Davis said he viewed body camera footage from all three officers and footage from the dashcam of police cruisers on scene
“So if I appear to be speaking with a degree of certainty
I’m certain that these officers are lucky to be alive
I’m certain that they were fired upon by a gunman whose intention was to kill them
And I’m certain that the bravery exhibited by the third officer on the scene ultimately saved their lives,” Davis said at the news conference
That body camera footage will be released to the public within 30 days
The officer who shot and killed Wali is a two-year veteran of Fairfax County police and has been placed on restricted duty status
pending the outcome of criminal and administrative investigations

The driver was identified as 21-year-old Danielle Foreman

Poseidon Corp’s exposure to trade war is limited by long-term contracts, Fairfax president says
Fairfax Financial Holdings’ president expressed confidence in Poseidon Corp as the shipping unit contributed to profit growth in the first quarter.
Canada’s Fairfax said it earned $80.5m in profit from Poseidon, the ultimate parent of container ship owner Seaspan Corp, in the first three months of the year.
That is more than double the $34.8m earned in the same period of last year.
In an earnings call on Friday, CIBC Capital Markets analyst Nik Priebe asked about how Poseidon might be impacted by disruptions in global trade as a result of the US-China trade war.
Fairfax president Peter Clarke, who is also chief operating officer, said the company is “excited” about the prospects for Poseidon, which has long-term contracts for its container ship fleet.
“Talking to the management team, they are quite confident that the tariffs and economic uncertainty around the world will not have any significant effect on their business,” he said.
“The management team is outstanding and, by locking in these contracts, it was a huge plus for them, so we’re very excited about the prospects of Poseidon.”
Clarke did not mention the potential impact of fees imposed by the government of US President Donald Trump on Chinese-built and Chinese-owned ships. Seaspan Corp has headquarters in Hong Kong, which the US treats as indistinguishable from China, although it is a Marshall Islands-registered entity.
Total net earnings for Prem Watsa-backed Fairfax, which is also involved in property, insurance and banking, rose to $953m in the period, up from nearly $770m in the first three months of 2024.
Fairfax owns 43.3% of Poseidon, which acquired Atlas Corp and its Seaspan subsidiary in a take-private deal that closed in 2023.
The company’s quarterly financial filing with Canadian securities regulators shows the stake has a $2.05bn fair market value, unchanged from the annual report.
Its $1.91bn carrying value is an increase from $1.86bn at the end of 2024.
