this series in Cumberland County ADP Research funded this reporting, and according to its data, Cumberland County has one of the oldest workforces in the country. ADP is a global payroll and human resources tech company that processes payroll for more than 40 million workers globally Cumberland County has a high concentration of retirees — about one-third of the population is 65 and older. That compares to less than 18% in the U.S The county seat here is Crossville, population around 12,500 a retirement destination with 9,500 residents In this fourth episode of “The Age of Work” from Cumberland County and “Marketplace” host Kai Ryssdal and ADP chief economist Nela Richardson discuss what they learned about the economy in Cumberland County Click the audio player above to hear the full story Ryssdal and Richardson visited the Palace Theatre and where audiences from Crossville and Fairfield Glade watch old movies Malena Fisher has been the administrator for almost three years “We have school trips all the time,” Fisher said then you have to pay us $10 for all of that We try to keep things low — it’s more of a community service.”  It closed in 1978 and sat empty for decades The city bought the property with plans to tear it down but a group of locals raised money to save the theater so we’re starting to get some young people in.” Malena Fisher flips through newspaper clippings about the history of Palace in her office.Maria Hollenhorst/MarketplaceFrom Cumberland County to the rest of the worldThis week Kai Ryssdal and Nela Richardson spoke about their trip to Tennessee back in November and what it taught them about the future of this economy The following is an edited transcript of their conversation Kai Ryssdal: You’ve been listening the past couple days as we’ve aired those stories Big picture: What were your impressions from three days in Cumberland County where do young people fit in in this battle of the retirement lives Ryssdal: I don’t know if you remember one of those nights when we were out to dinner there were about four or five sets of grandparents taking care of grandchildren I’ve heard that the best part of being a grandparent is being able to take your [grand]child home after you’ve babysat them and some of them are doing that on a fixed income Ryssdal: Let’s talk about the ripple effects for a second that Malena was talking about there. What’s happening in Cumberland County with the changing demographics and the aging workforce, those ripple effects are coming through the rest of this economy Ryssdal: We have talked on this program in previous conversations tens of millions of records of how people are getting paid Do you suppose that markets like Sheboygan and Ottumwa and Austin are they ready for this change that that is coming in the American workforce people are not paying attention to their greatest strength in the community I also loved what he said about there being jobs there how do you serve an aging retirement community with young people and direct those young people to the places of opportunity I would love to hear more cities talking about that 012725 Age of Work_WorkforceInfogram talk about what’s happening next in this series as we talked about that day standing next to the pickleball court There are countries where a young workforce is a distinct advantage for them and will be over the next 50 years Richardson: Yes, that’s right. When you look at the demographic projections — and remember, there’s only one way this global economy is going to grow — when there are more workers, and those workers get more productive, those more workers in terms of prime age, younger workers they’re hitting places like Africa in terms of growth rate are the jobs there and the skill sets there to support the needs of not just African countries and South East Asian countries I think of people now as the new globalization in economics We talk about trade in terms of goods and services We never talk about how interconnected we are as people if the technology and the wealth is in one place and the growing worker base is another how do we connect those dots on a global scale Sign up for the Marketplace newsletter to get the day’s biggest business stories straight to your inbox every weekday evening According to the Fairfield Glade Fire Department a series of unfortunate events led to a structure fire in Fairfield Glade yesterday afternoon as a house on Stonecastle Place suffered a fire under the floor The current theory from a Volunteer Energy Cooperative electrician is that a lightning strike over the weekend hit a propane line going to the house Workers with VEC were on the scene attempting to work with the house’s wiring when an attempt to turn the power back on caused a short the fire didn’t rise above the floor and VEC electricians could put out most of the fire before Fairfield Glade firefighters arrived on the scene The firefighters were on the scene for roughly an hour and the fire was successfully put out with just a fire extinguisher although portions of the house’s under area were scorched This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks The action you just performed triggered the security solution There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase You can email the site owner to let them know you were blocked Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page Several wildfires developed in Western Cumberland County last night These wildfires resulted in limited evacuations in Browntown and Frasier communities with people being evacuated to Pleasant Hill Elementary School Fairfield Glade police would also post a fire evacuation near St is that one or more of the wildfires was sparked by power lines landing on the ground during the dry weather due to the harsh winds from the storms last night Tennessee State Forestry and Cumberland County Fire departments lifted the evacuation notice for the Browntown area with Fairfield Glade Fire Department following suit shortly Rain late into the night helped alleviate some of the blaze into a state that it could be controlled 75 acres were caught in the fire that impacted Browntown Rd Tennessee passed away peacefully on January 4 Calvin was born to Lea and Merceda Riehle Smart on January 24 Calvin won the Gold Medal in the Senior Olympics of Tennessee His favorite teams included the Green Bay Packers and the Wisconsin Badgers Calvin loved to travel the world with his wife Susan He was a member of the Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church Scott Hansen; daughter Heidi Good; brothers A memorial service will be held January 19th at Fairfield Glade United Methodist Church at 2pm left her earthly home to be in the presence… Cynthia “Cindy” Gayle Helton age 56 of Lafollette Please include what you were doing when this page came up and the Cloudflare Ray ID found at the bottom of this page.
