year’s event: “We’re thrilled to feature Hannah’s work and offer visitors a chance to experience art in action The Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival is more than an art show—it’s a celebration of creativity Baldwin County has been the fastest growing county in Alabama Many of the thousands of people who move there lay down roots in the city of Fairhope The city has experienced massive growth with multiple subdivisions and other multiple occupant properties built But now the city is putting a pause on the growth which is halting applications for certain residential developments for at least the next nine months Morgan Slay owns Riverbend -- a men’s apparel store in Downtown Fairhope He says his family has lived in the city for several generations He's seen how it has changed over the years “You do miss seeing the farmland and some of the things that you grew up seeing as a kid," said Slay But there’s always something that follows that will be good as well.” The growth boom in Baldwin County has added thousands of residents to the Fairhope area "I wouldn’t be able to have the business that I have in town and in the town that I grew up in," Slay said "So try the silver lining in the growth.” But the fast growth has caused growing pains for other aspects of the city we're trying to catch up with our water capacity," Fairhope City Council President Jack Burrell said "And so we've had to put in a moratorium of water usage and things such as that To ensure "smart growth," Burrell says there is now a pause on applications for certain developments "For multiple occupant projects of greater than three residential units or any other development that has three residential units less than 10,500 ft.,” he said Burrell says the pause allows the city to evaluate and let infrastructure like water "We want to take a look at our subdivision rules and regulations in our zoning rules and regulations during this pause," Burrell said "We just wanna make sure that we’re growing in the right way Which to business owner Slay is a good thing “Certainly happy to kind of pause these things and assess the infrastructure and some of the problems that we have it through because of growth," Slay said The pause is anticipated to be complete in November if we don’t think that we’re ready to accept new applications that could be extended," he said Burrell says the pause will not affect development applications that have already been approved by the city which tells the story of a girl trafficked into sexual slavery in India A new Alabama law and a 2024 facts claiming that gender is not a choice as the book suggests The patron expressed concerns that the book could cause confusion about biological concepts and foster anger toward the groups discussed Another patron requested the removal and destruction of "Door by Door: How Sarah McBride Became America's First Openly Transgender Senator" stating that the book is not educationally appropriate and accusing it of being "brainwashing" for children Another patron noted that "Looking for Alaska" uses God's name in vain and fails to promote moral Christian values Reviewing other requests for reconsideration a recurring theme in patrons' concerns was the belief that gender is limited to two choices and that the materials do not align with Christian moral principles Jennifer Lindahl is a seemed to be on the same page Assurances that the supporters who filled Fairhope's city council tonight remained 100 percent behind their library in spite of complaints that have been leveled at the library at the state level The library recently had its state funding "paused" after a complaint from a group called "Moms for Liberty." The group complained that some books in the teen section should not be available because of several sensitive topics and subject matter Of those who came to address the Fairhope City Council Monday night some shared intensely personal stories about the importance of making controversial subject matter available to age appropriate audiences and had less than kind words to say about the group who brought complaints against the library to state library officials this self-styled Moms of Liberty has done nothing but sown division and undermined individual liberty since they came here and they do not represent the values of our community,” said one library supporter at the speaker’s podium "We've seen what they've done in Prattville we've seen what they've done when they get a modicum of control,” said another “They a fundamentally opposed to the things that make Fairhope Still others defended some of the books called into question saying they have important age appropriate content that shouldn't be denied to young readers "Because it's a powerful tool to combat human trafficking,” said another supporter holding one of the challenged books up for all to see council members assured the crowd they were opposed to any reduction in funding "I have no regard to defund our library,” offered council member Corey Martin "This has gotten a little bigger than it was intended to,” remarked council member Jay Robinson “But please understand there is no desire by the council or the mayor to defund our library and I don't believe that's the motive of the state mayor Sherry Sullivan made that point as the meeting was getting started saying she has had some productive discussions with Alabama Public Library Service board chairman John Wahl and wanted to make one thing clear:the state funding to the library was not cut But it was that pause that still leaves a bad taste in the mouth of council president Jack Burrell drawing applause from the standing room only crowd I'm not trying to pick a fight with APLS but I want to send a message that that's not ok." Berrell made it clear he feels the state got the process backwards I don't believe we were given due process anyone can go to Montgomery and make some comments and cause a pause in the funding without process I am very pleased they are going to come and visit the library." That upcoming visit was an important bit of information gleaned from Monday’s city council meeting We also learned the library has modified its library cards allowing parents more control over books checked out by their children And five books have now been moved from the teen section to the adult section Mayor Sullivan also says the city has already received two rounds of funding for the library from the state Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival Announced Abbreviated Saturday Hours 10:00 am - 1:00 pm Fairhope Police Department and National Weather Service The Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival and Eastern Shore Art Center's Outdoor Art Show will close early on Saturday The Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival Foundation and Eastern Shore Art Center met Friday with city leaders and local officials to evaluate the weather situation We invite guests to enjoy the morning hours exploring the downtown Fairhope as our artists and local merchants are eager to greet the crowds Shuttles will run from 9:30 am and until 1:30 pm Shuttles will run Sunday from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm invading he streets of downtown Fairhope that had been cleared of parked cars and most pedestrians It was time for the annual Eastern Shore ritual that is known across the country as the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Show There are more than 200 artists setting up in the streets And that doesn't count another hundred at the Eastern Shore Arts Center and all the food vendors chomping at the bit to set up shop the three day event will open under the shadow of a possible severe weather threat on Saturday with Fairhope sitting on the edge of a level four threat of a severe weather outbreak Local artist Loran Chavez and her husband shared their tent with a confident cat a few years ago when the weather got rough at the festival But most of the tie it's a quick down burst and a lot of wind probably about 350 pounds of weight on our tent So Im not worries about ti and I also have a tent that is especially made for this kind of weather My tent is made to withstand 70 mile per hour wind." Another artist is setting up a wooden structure nearby to show her wares She's been selling her Earth Fire and Spirit Pottery here for the past 30 festivals maybe four or five years ago when the tornado sirens went off,” she says Festival chairman Marissa Thetford isn't worried but she and her volunteers are monitoring the weather for Saturday And they're leaning on some professional help "We've got some officials here at the city of Fairhope and Fairhope police department and at the county level and we are having very specific National Weather Service updates pinpointed specifically for Fairhope But with all that's been invested in such a large and popular event these artists have managed to master the artistry of optimism." "Even if the tornado sirens go off there will be people here in their raincoats "If you give up on coming out here Saturday Because it's going to be a good day." cracks down on ‘sexually explicit’ content The public library in Fairhope, Alabama – a picturesque city on the shores of Mobile Bay – has found itself in the crosshairs of battles over library content The Alabama public library service board of trustees recently voted to withhold state funding from the Fairhope public library after complaints from conservative parents about books in the teen section the board voted to immediately dismiss the executive director of the state library agency who is also the chair of the Alabama Republican party said board members believe the Fairhope library is in violation of state policies to protect children from inappropriate materials The books that have been cited by the upset parents include Sold a National Book Award finalist about a girl who is sold into sexual slavery in India Read moreThe American Library Association’s list of the most-challenged books of 2023 included many with LGBTQ+ or sexual content “I think that the GOP chair on the state library board is forcing the removal of books just because of anti-library extremists I think that’s ignoring the voices of Fairhope taxpayers and library users,” said Amber Frey of Read Freely Alabama an organization that has opposed the restrictions Wahl said his board was not trying to ban the books But he maintained the state code requires “the actual relocation of these books out of youth sections” “We are unapologetic about standing up for Alabama families and putting them in control even if that means temporarily defunding local libraries until they can be compliant,” Wahl said He said parents objecting to the books read excerpts during the meeting to demonstrate why they believe the books do not belong in the teen section Clean Up Alabama, a group that along with Moms for Liberty had sought restrictions “We saw the board step up in the fight to protect our children,” the group said in a statement The secretary of the board of the Fairhope public library said they were shocked by the action “We’re devastated and really stunned by this We had no warning that this was going to happen,” Randal Wright said the library received complaints against 35 books and went through a review process The director declined to move them after determining they were appropriate for teens Wright said they recently received a request to revisit that decision because of the new state policies Free newsletterGet the most important US headlines and highlights emailed direct to you every morning and we stuck by that decision,” Wright said Wright said she believed the challenges were filed by a small number of people The overall community was supportive of its library Read Freely Alabama has started a fundraiser for the Fairhope library to try to replace the $42,000 in state funding The group had raised $8,000 by Friday afternoon The state board on Thursday also dismissed Nancy Pack who has led the library service since 2014 Pack had planned on resigning at the end of September Wahl said there had been friction between Pack and some board members who believed she was hostile to the policies they were trying to implement Pack has spent more than 30 years as a librarian and has been honored as a distinguished alumna of the University of Tennessee’s school of information sciences “Libraries have never been political,” Pack said adding that the attacks on librarians and libraries have been distressing “We have seen more librarians retire rather than go through what we’re having to go through at this time.” Investigators with the Baldwin County in Fairhope known for being featured in the 1977 sci-fi film 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' could soon be relocated the house sits along highway 181 near the intersection of highway 104 the city's planning commission voted to recommend approval of the relocation to the city council "It's been used as multiple things throughout the years It has been quite a few things,” said Hunter Simmons Simmons says the property owner is looking to bring the house up to code while working to preserve it “It sat on approximately forty acres of undeveloped property This development is at the corner of 104 and 181 so two state highways are being developed and creating commercial lots with previous approval Now they are coming back and wanting to move the house within the property and in an effort to preserve the house,” he said The plan is to eventually relocate it to the back of the property away from highway 181 and further east on highway 104 you have to understand their existing rules There is no preservation of the building required there were some questions: why even move it But that's the developer's choice and we are applauding the efforts to preserve at least the building and move that within the site,” he said Simmons says the intent is to use the house as office space “We really appreciate the developer making the efforts to preserve the house and kind of keep it local it is just moving a few hundred yards on this item,” he said Now it is up to the city council to decide whether the owner will be allowed to relocate the house to a different part of the property a Fairhope man was arrested on a rape charge after the victim stated that he lured her to his home posted on a social media app that he was looking for a housekeeper After contacting a local
