– A Fairport grandmother is in dire straits in Puerto Rico after falling ill during a family vacation for Easter
She has been in hospitals and an ICU for more than two weeks and her family says she has no safe way out
The family is desperate to get their grandmother
back to her doctors at Strong Memorial Hospital but being in Puerto Rico is complicating their insurance and Medicare
“I think it’s pretty dire,” said Alexa Bergstrom-LaDuke
who is with her sick mother in Puerto Rico
Bergstrom-LaDuke flew with her mother and children to Puerto Rico for Easter
she started a cell transplant regimen and showed signs of remission in March
Bergstrom fell ill and is now in critical condition
Unfortunately the only way that is the safe way for her to get home is by air ambulance,” said Bergstrom-LaDuke
News10NBC: “So how much would an air ambulance cost out of pocket?”
Alexa Bergstrom-LaDuke: “An air ambulance costs
The situation is further complicated because Bergstrom-LaDuke says Medicare won’t pay for an air ambulance from Puerto Rico to Rochester and her mother’s international coverage on her United Health insurance policy won’t either
Bergstrom-LaDuke: “They consider Puerto Rico part of the United States and not international
So Medicare considers it not to be part of the U.S
And United Healthcare considers it to be part of the U.S
Berkeley Brean: “What worries you the most right now?”
Alexa Bergstrom-LaDuke: “Everything worries me
I am terrified that my mom is going to die in Puerto Rico.”
“I tell her every day ‘I just want you to picture us at University of Rochester Medical Center and the flurry of doctors and nurses that will occur as soon as you get wheeled in there,'” said Bergstrom-LaDuke
News10NBC contacted Medicare and they are looking into the situation
Congressman Joe Morelle’s office was also called and his constituent team is looking into it
There is a GoFundMe account to help pay for the air ambulance which has raised more than $21,000 since April 18

A $3.4 million bridge replacement project is underway this month along Route 250 in the village of Fairport
The work is taking place on North Main Street
just north of the recently rehabilitated Fairport Lift Bridge — a key corridor through the historic canal village
runs under Main Street and carries Route 250 over Thomas Creek
The project includes full replacement of the structure
along with new sidewalks and ADA-compliant curb ramps
Roads leading to the bridge will close starting April 14 for approximately four months
Drivers should follow posted detours via Whitney Road
“The village of Fairport is a jewel of the Finger Lakes region
with hundreds of thriving small businesses and residents who love the charm of the village vibe,” state Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said in a statement
“This bridge replacement project on Route 250 will enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors alike
paving the way for a safer and more vibrant community — just as we did with the historic Fairport Lift Bridge rehabilitation a few years ago.”
Although the project overlaps with the Fairport Music Festival and Canal Days
a pedestrian walkway will remain open throughout construction

which may present challenges for residents
“I think when they are done it’s going to be beautiful,” VanGelder said
“I’m a little bummed out but at the same time I think it’s something in the long run that will improve and make Fairport better,” Hough said
The state DOT assured that a pedestrian walkway will be available during construction and access to businesses will be maintained
The public is advised that the road will be closed to through traffic at the bridge beginning April 14
a signed detour will be in place utilizing Whitney Road

— Small businesses play a vital role in our economy
but it can be challenging for any start-up to compete
some small businesses are collaborating to promote mutual growth. That’s what’s happening inside a Fairport mini mart
One of the costliest parts of doing business is retail or office space
opened a new pop-up kitchen to allow up-and-coming eateries to cook and sell there
The first business in the space is The Barking Bun Catering Co
“The most popular is probably the Philly cheesesteak, you know, a classic,” said Cota, who owns The Barking Bun Catering Co.
His mobile food cart business that’s normally set up outside around Fairport during the warmer months is booming
He doesn’t want winter to slow business down and when business is good
He is not sure if he is ready for his own restaurant
so when the owner of Fairport Convenient opened a pop-up kitchen for up and coming chefs
"I have access to better equipment and more ability through agriculture and the health department to be able to expand the menu,” said Cota
Barking Bun subs and burgers to-go are getting people in the door who might not otherwise have stopped in
Increased foot traffic means increased sales for the store
It’s also a test-run for Cota to see what’s possible for the future of his tasty bite business without all the risks
"We try to support local and it is good food
I am here for the second day in a row and I live right around the corner," said Jon Norton from Fairport
"It is going great and it has a lot of room for growth
At some point this can become something huge

(WHAM) — It’s a bridge you might not even know is there in the village of Fairport
Built in 1934 over Thomas Creek on Main Street
the bridge is about two football fields north of the more prominent lift bridge over the Erie Canal
Mayor Julie Domaratz said there’s been piecemeal work done on the creek bridge for decades
or the 'riff raff' is what it's called
and the sidewalk was starting to sink in," she said
"It's important that this bridge get fixed
Domaratz said it was identified as one of the worst bridges in Monroe County
Starting April 14, the section of road will be shut down so the New York State Department of Transportation can work on the replacement project for four months
if you're headed from the north to the south
it will go up High Street and then to the east
and then cross the canal at Turk Hill Road," Domaratz explained
Drivers will be able to use some side streets to get around
"The street itself will always remain open to pedestrian traffic on the east side of the street
which runs in front of 80 North Main Street
and some of the other buildings right along there," Domaratz said
but what is iron-clad is this will be a disruption to local businesses
The area was shut down to traffic for 22 months while the lift bridge up the road was repaired
BACKGROUND: NYSDOT: Reopening lift bridge in Fairport delayed until late spring
Nancy Ragus of the Fairport-Perinton Partnership wanted to drive home that while this might be a four-month traffic disruption
"Our businesses will not be closed for one minute
Everything stays open and the accessibility will always be there," Ragus said
adding there is ample parking in the village
“We'll come out the other end, and because we did before, and hopefully Fairport will look even better than it does now," said Deborah Tellier of Main Street Mercantile
“Fairport is super resilient. We're a walkable community. People can still get here," said Doug Sharp of RV&E Bike and Skate
This begs the question: why not just fix this Thomas Creek bridge back in 2019 along with the lift bridge
Domaratz said both were talked about back then
“It takes time to put engineering plans together
"(Thomas Creek) was originally slated to occur in 2024."
The DOT currently estimates the cost of the replacement to be around $3.5 million
Domaratz said the village will also be working on Main Street
Streetscape Project will feature all new sidewalks
Most of the funding for it will be through a federal grant

(WHAM) — A late-night food cart in the village of Fairport has transformed into a sandwich shop inside a convenience store on North Main Street
If you frequent the bar scene in Fairport, chances are you've seen Gage Cota and his food cart known as the Barking Bun Catering Co. down by the train tracks.
"I was the first one in Fairport to do it, so that was pretty cool," said Cota. "Pretty much every Friday and Saturday, rain, snow, everything in between. You know, it was 9 p.m. to sold out, burgers, dogs, sausages and boom-boom sauce on everything."
Now, Cota has taken his culinary venture indoors, marking the sixth week of business inside the Fairport Market and Deli at 154 North Main St.
Cota said the focus is hot sandwiches, and the expanded menu features sweet, salty and savory creations made with local products like Vinny's rolls.
"So I got, Philly cheesesteak, West Coast chicken cheesesteak and Buffalo chopped chicken getting ready for the day," Cota said while preparing sandwiches.
Sandwiches are made to order within six minutes, or customers can opt for a quick grab-and-go option from the "lunch box." All come with a bag of chips.
Cota hopes the Barking Bun will become a Fairport staple.
"I grew up in town with my cousins and stuff, you know, fishing in the canal, swimming in the canal, doing all of that wonderful stuff," he said. "This is my future, you know, it's my family's future. This is my friend's future. I can't wait for everybody to come here and just have a good time."
"'Ask about the sauce' is the hashtag," said Cota, referring to his signature "boom-boom sauce."
The Barking Bun Catering Co. is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for in-person service. Cota said after that, customers can still stop in until the convenience store closes to purchase a grab-and-go.
He also offers catering and has ambitious plans for the future of his business.
RadarFairport schools embrace AIby Matthew Kwiatkowski & WHAM Staff
(WHAM) — Artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming a part of everyday life
educators are embracing AI's potential to enhance learning while maintaining the essential human connection in education
an English teacher at Johanna Perrin Middle School
said AI has transformed her teaching approach by allowing her to personalize lesson plans and provide immediate feedback to students
"You can have 100 students receive feedback that’s personalized and tailored to them in moments when something like that would take me hours to do outside of the classroom and wouldn’t be in real-time," Roach said
The district uses a tool called Magic School
which offers vast capabilities for individualized writing feedback
Students paste their writing into the tool and receive immediate
"When my students struggle with descriptive language and personal narratives
the AI under my guidance asks them questions to consider
prompting them to enhance their imagery without providing direct answers or rewriting for them," Roach said
works to alleviate teachers' concerns about being replaced by AI
"We don’t replace education with AI," he said
but there is ultimately always a person there who is helping to guide these students."
"The heart of teaching is and always will be the human connection," Roach said
The district has formed a committee to create a framework for using AI responsibly in classrooms
The framework allows teachers to select a level from one to five for each assignment or exam
"It shows teachers that there are many different ways AI can be used in a very meaningful way to support the learning outcomes of their lesson without taking away from their lesson," Ruder said
educators emphasize the importance of maintaining the human aspect of learning
"As long as we are asking questions about AI and how we can preserve our humanity or
how we can preserve the human-to-human interactions
Roach expressed excitement about the opportunities AI provides to connect more with her students
it makes me feel empowered," she said
"And also I can take a breath because now I can focus my energies on other tasks and connecting with kids
rather than doing something that AI can do for me."
When Jodi and Greg Johnson first looked at the Renaissance revival-style bank building in the Village of Fairport
narrow windows were cloaked with blinds and dated paisley valances
The towering ceiling was encircled with moldings painted peach and gray
The space was divided into several offices
While some might have felt like they were stepping back into the 1980s
Jodi Johnson was transported to somewhere else
"Basically this place when we walked in reminded me of Eleven Madison Park," she said
The 3-Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant in New York City
has towering ceilings with large windows that look out onto the greenery of Madison Square Park
And Greg Johnson knew one thing for sure: "Restaurants that go into banks are always cool."
the couple has transformed the 1924-built Fairport National Bank and Trust Company building into a modern new restaurant called Bonnie and Clyde
faced in diamond-shaped green tiles and topped with marble
Long rows of banquettes neatly divide the room
which was enlarged by taking down the walls between offices
flood the space with natural light and peeks of mature trees
The colors are mostly light and neutral with accents of emerald green
Jodi Johnson ordered its metal light fixtures from Craft Metal Products
where Eleven Madison Park purchased its own distinctive lights
The ceiling's woodwork has been painted to highlight original detailing they call "the rope."
In the former bank vault is the chef's table
which will exclusively serve a 5-course chef's tasting menu that's curated weekly and can be served with or without wine pairings
walls of weathered green and a table for a party of six to eight
A mezzanine that had been walled in for offices has been opened up and now overlooks the main dining room
It is used for restaurant seating but can also be booked for cocktail parties or private groups of 20; it has its own wet bar and bathroom
a patio will be set up alongside the building
The bar will open to the outside via large windows
with barstools at the bar and table seating for 30 or so
"We're bringing a cosmopolitan flair to a lovely village," Jodi Johnson said
The menu can be described as American seasonal
with various influences from Greg Johnson's career as a chef
has experience with Italian and Spanish fare and attended a cooking school while traveling in Thailand
homemade pastas and Amish chicken all on the opening menu
A customer favorite thus far has been a small plate of pan-seared sea scallops
served in a pool of creamy Panang curry alongside a wedge of bok choy
The restaurant also has been serving an "obnoxious amount of steak," Greg Johnson said
Its version of steak frites is a 12-ounce New York strip accompanied by fries and bone marrow butter
The menu doesn't overlap the Cub Room ― the couple's Rochester restaurant that's closing March 2 ― not even the popular burger
"There are six to seven places in Fairport you can get a burger," Greg Johnson said
Seasonal desserts are made in house by Philip Duquette
who previously owned Premier Pastry on South Avenue
The cocktail menu offers original creations and takes on classic cocktails
Several feature its house-branded Bonnie's Giggle Water gin
And Clyde's Champion Lager is made by Meier's Creek Brewing Co
The restaurant also offers 15 wines by the glass and bottle
encompassing many of the world's well-known wine regions including a riesling from the Finger Lakes
Due to regulations surrounding the historic building

It plans to add lunch and brunch in the near future

A Fairport high school student is facing a felony charge after allegedly posting a threatening message on social media in October
A 17-year-old is accused of making a post threatening violence at Fairport High School and warning people not to come to the building that day
The youth has been charged with making a terroristic threat and has been remanded to the the county Children’s Detention Center on $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 bond
the sheriff's department determined that the threat followed a trend of similar posts that schools around the country were receiving at the time
Officers were able to trace the digital footprint of the post to the student
according to the Monroe County Sherriff’s Office
This significantly disrupted people's lives,” said Deputy Brendan Hurley
“This plays on the mental health of students and the parents and the teachers and everyone involved.”
Hurley said while the arrest provides some closure
there’s still more that could potentially be addressed with resources within the detention center if the act was “a cry for help.”
“If they're not getting what they need in life
there's programs there that can assist them and get to the root of the problem,” Hurley said
Did we fix why these kids are out doing it?”
The youth was arraigned in Youth Part of Monroe County Court
which handles cases for 16- and 17-year old offenders
The case may remain in Youth Part or a judge could transfer it to probation or to Family Court
where it would be treated as a juvenile delinquency case
people are not automatically tried as adults until they reach 18 years of age
In some cases, a teen aged 14-19 can be given youthful offender status if they have never been treated as such before and have no prior felony convictions
it is up to the judge in felony cases whether that status may be granted
Youthful offender records are not criminal records and are automatically sealed
“The goal isn't to ruin someone's life,” Hurley said
“The goal is to fix the root cause so that this doesn't happen again."
In an open letter, Fairport superintendent Brett Provenzano said the district will also employ its code of conduct “to the greatest extent possible” regarding the student’s actions
That could mean a long-term or permanent out of school suspension
please take time to speak with your students today about this incident,” Provenzano said in a letter to the district community
“This should serve as a reminder that what we post online matters - even if it seems like a joke or a contribution to a trend.”
“The district and our community cannot take threats lightly and each one of us has a responsibility to keep people safe,” Provenzano said
“Please continue to encourage students to pause and think about the ramification of their online activities.”

tournament MVP Jalen Taggart and his Rush-Henrietta Royal Comets defeated Fairport again
Saturday's final at Blue Cross Arena was far from easy
Coach Calvin Betts' top-seeded Rush-Henrietta squad didn't have to overcome another 20-point deficit
but the Royal Comets did trail LaShard Lowry Jr.'s second-seeded Raiders for much of the final until midway through the fourth quarter
Fairport scrambled for a last-second 3-pointer by Hadi Dergham

Rush-Henrietta paraded around the court to celebrate their nail-biting 53-50 victory
Rush-Henrietta (20-2) won its first title since 2011
Betts is now a Section V champion as a player and a coach
who scored six of his 18 points in the fourth
Fairport coach Scott Fitch's Raiders (18-4) trailed 52-48 when Sam Roselli stole the ball from Rush star Avery Council
Alex Grejda caught hold of the loose ball and sparked a fast break
leading to Dergham's layup that cut Fairport's deficit to two with 32 seconds left
Rush's Talhah Ali split a pair of free throws with 5.1 seconds remaining
missing the second before Fairport's last-second shot went off target
Jahquin Brown scored 18 points while Council added 10 for Rush-Henrietta
who will play Section VI champion Jamestown in next weekend's region final for a spot in the New York state final four
Lowry led Fairport with 12 points while Dergham recorded 11 and Landon Brunken added 10 for a Raiders program that lost its second finals appearance in three seasons

Fairport found a way to win Section V's Class AAA title
The Red Raiders led by 15 entering the fourth quarter of their championship matchup against Greece Arcadia/Olympia
until that advantage evaporated to two with about four minutes remaining
Two key shots down the stretch from sophomore Avery Lucey helped Fairport weather the Lightning's storm
"This is really special," Fairport coach Tom Vasey said
and a lot of these girls I've known for four or five years
or some others since they were 9 years old playing basketball
They all love each other and are best friends on and off the court
Lucey shared the team lead in scoring with freshman Eva Monoski
Aimee Turner had a game-high 20 for Arcadia/Olympia
another freshman who finished with seven points
joined Lucey and Monoski on the all-tournament team
and the younger girls pulled through," Lucey said

where the Red Raiders will face Section VI's representative (either Jamestown or Lancaster)
it'll ensure a rematch of last year's far west regional
Sophomore sinks key baskets for FairportAfter the fact
the 10th-grader Lucey said jump shots aren't the most reliable part of her game
She looked every bit the part with Fairport's lead on the line in the fourth
The Red Raiders had seized the lead during the second quarter when Greece's Turner picked up her second foul and was pulled for the remainder of the half
Her absence inspired Fairport's switch to a full-court press
abnormal for a team that prefers to back into a zone
who at times struggled to push the ball past halfcourt
but we charted a lot of possessions against Arcadia/Olympia from our first two games
and we found that when we applied some kind of pressure
we went to more man-on-man knowing they're limited without her
Fairport went up by double digits by the end of the third
Four minutes of basket-less offense followed to start the fourth
drained a jumper from the right elbow for the Red Raiders' first points of the fourth with three minutes left in regulation
another shot from the free throw line fell
"I had three fouls in the first half so I was a little hesitant with some things
But I realized I had to put everything I had onto the court because it could be our last game," Lucey said
"I just had to pull through for the team and hit my shots
managed one more point (on a free throw) the remainder of the game
This result marks four straight losses for the Lightning against Fairport dating back to last year's section final
Three of those losses were by single digits
Greece Arcadia/Olympia's Aimee Turner (MVP)
Greece Arcadia/Olympia's Madeline Kielkowicz
should Fairport claim the Class AAA bracket
1 team in their tournament and the 22nd-ranked team in New York state
A matchup with Lancaster means another showdown with Madison Francis, a 6 foot, 2 inch junior and returning first-team all-state selection. The acrobatic forward was a major thorn in the Red Raiders' side a year ago
"Last year we had a pretty good post presence
The difference will be whether our three forwards
Hopefully we can keep it close until the end like we did last time
Fairport vs. Greece Arcadia/Olympia: Game startThe Class AAA final is underway
Lola Pucci's 3-pointer with 1:01 left in the quarter is the difference

Fairport boys soccer head coach Bill Teasdale was understandably guarded about the possibility of a state title run
Not because he thought his Red Raiders didn't have the ability
Teasdale referenced Fairport's several previous state tournament appearances dating back to the early 1990s
He recalled his group from 2022 that oozed of talent
but didn't escape the Section V tournament
There was also last season's team that advanced to the Class AAA state quarterfinals but lost to Lancaster on a late goal

The Fairport Central School District announced plans to change the beginning and end times of school days
which is expected to start in the 2026-2027 school year
According to the district's website
the Fairport Board of Education made this decision
which will impact students from kindergarten to 12th grade
"to better align with research about both the importance of sleep for adolescents and improved outcomes at school that correlate with later arrival times for older students."
This new schedule would shift the start times for the elementary schools to earlier and push the start times for the middle and high schools back
According to Fairport's timeline for shifting school start times
research and development for these plans began in 2015
FCSD's website cites different research findings that led to this decision about changing start times
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
adolescents between 13 and 18 need eight to 10 hours of sleep daily
FCSD's website states that the Monroe County Youth Risk Behavior Survey
administered to middle and high school students every three years
shows that 75 percent of Fairport's ninth—to twelfth-grade students report getting less than eight hours of sleep at night
The survey also showed that 42 percent of these students at Fairport report getting less than or around six hours of sleep each night
"The FCSD Board of Education and District administration is dedicated to aligning policy with best practices for the health and safety of Fairport students," the district wrote on its website
research shows that starting school after 8:30 a.m

Teens soon will get more time to sleep in on school days in Fairport as a districtwide shift in start times is on the horizon
The Fairport Board of Education voted unanimously on Tuesday to flip the schedule for all schools starting two years from now
That means high schoolers will start classes later
A finalized schedule has not yet been announced
“There is a lot of compelling research that links sleep disturbance to increased challenges with mental health,” said University of Rochester Medical Center psychologist Emily Cromwell
“What we see is that schools that start earlier
we see those students actually have increased risk for worse mental health.”
Cromwell spoke with the Fairport school board earlier this year during a Q&A discussion panel about the proposal
“There is a line of research that's been examining how sleep relates to suicidal ideation,” she said
we see increases in suicidal ideation and behavior.”
Changing the school day schedule to reflect teenagers’ natural sleep rhythm is a matter of students’ mental health
Cromwell and URMC pediatric sleep specialist Laura Tomaselli said during the discussion
"The circadian rhythm timing changes during puberty,” Tomaselli said
“The delayed sleep phase in adolescence is felt to be starting about two hours of what it typically is during childhood
because the teenage brain is not as sensitive to some of the other cues — in particular light.”
is essentially that teenage brains behave differently from younger brains
and sufficient sleep plays a significant role in overall health
Superintendent Brett Provenzano said the changeup in start times has been years in the making and was a topic of conversation when he took over in 2015
“It was definitively clear that the research ..
supports the need for the shift to occur,” Provenzano said
“We've been doing a number of transportation studies to see if we could do it in a way that's fiscally responsible and doesn't add additional tax impacts to our community
And we are now in a place where we feel like we can make that move.”
Part of the reasoning for the change to happen in the 2026-27 school year is that there is an expected consolidation that would take place then in which ninth grade classes -- which are currently held at Minerva DeLand School — will be re-absorbed into the high school building
Fairport High School PTSA President Penny Dunn said in a statement that the organization supports the school board’s choice
“By prioritizing the well-being and academic success of our students
this change reflects our collective commitment to fostering a positive and productive learning environment,” Dunn said
